Mini’s major move to five doors by Jack McKeown THE MINI has got a bit less mini with the introduction of the first ever five-door model of the hatch. It has been stretched by around five inches to make room for the two extra doors and improve both rear legroom and boot space. According to Mini there is room in the back for two adults. There is a seatbelt for a fifth person in the middle — but do not expect them to be comfortable. It will be the first model available with Mini’s new flagship diesel engine, a 168bhp 2.0 litre Cooper SD that is more efficient than the old Cooper SD diesel, averaging 68.9mpg. The five-door Mini will carry a £600 premium over equivalent versions of the three-door, which means a starting price of £14,350 for the entry-level Mini One.

NEW 3

The Courier & Advertiser Wednesday, August 13, 2014

Handsome new Alfas By Jack McKeown, Motoring Editor ALFA ROMEO is ready to launch new versions of the Giulietta and MiTo in flagship Quadrifoglio Verde trim, with both models set for official UK debuts at this month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Sales will begin shortly after in July, starting at £28,120 for the Giulietta and £20,210 for the MiTo. In Quadrifoglio Verde spec – often known as Cloverleaf in the UK – the updated Giulietta will feature the 237bhp aluminium 1.75-litre turbocharged petrol engine that first appeared in the 4C coupe, which generates 340Nm of torque. Paired to Alfa’s TCT 6-speed dualclutch gearbox with Launch Control system, which also makes its way over from the Italian manufacturer’s new sports car, the Giulietta QV will manage 0-62mph in six seconds flat. Although 0.8 seconds faster than its predecessor and capable of a 149mph top speed, the Giulietta is also compliant with Euro 6 standards, emitting 162g/km of CO2 – a reduction of 15g/km. As well as new intake and exhaust systems to help the Alfa audibly stand out, there are visual cues in the form of lowered sports suspension, dark-tinted rear windows, and an Anthracite finish for the front grille, wing mirrors, door handles and foglight frames.

Mini has got a bit less mini MINI has introduced the first ever five-door model of the superpopular classic hatch. It’s been stretched by around 16cm to make room for the two extra doors and improve both rear legroom and boot space. According to Mini there’s room in the back for two adults. There’s a seatbelt for a fifth person in the middle but don’t expect them to be comfortable. Boot space increases to 278 litres – the same as a Fiesta – and there’s an adjustable floor to increase practicality.

It will be the first model available with Mini’s new flagship diesel engine - a 168bhp 2.0 litre Cooper SD that is more efficient than the old Cooper SD diesel, averaging 68.9mpg. The five-door Mini will carry a £600 premium over equivalent versions of the three-door, which means a starting price of £14,350 for the entry-level Mini One. It will be available to order in a few weeks’ time and first deliveries will happen in October.

Toyota tweaks its Yaris TOYOTA has updated its Yaris, making it smarter inside and out, more economical and better to drive. It’s still powered by 1.33 petrol and 1.4 litre diesel engines but they’ve been tweaked to make them quieter. The three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine has been re-engineered to bring its CO2 emissions

down to below 100g/km - equating to zero road tax. It goes on sale in the summer. Price and specification details haven’t been announced yet but all models will have air-conditioning and a touch-screen multimedia system.

Golf GTD is fast, frugal and refined by Jack McKeown VOLKSWAGEN’S GOLF GTD tries to be all things to all men. Fast yet frugal, agile but comfortable. Sexy yet understated. And, remarkably, it succeeds. It’s not as visually aggressive as its GTI cousin, but the GTD’s performance potential is quite obvious. A deeper front bumper, honeycomb grille with discreet GTD badge, tailgate spoiler and 18-inch Nogaro wheels help this car stand out, as do twin-exit exhausts and the bi-xenon headlamps that come as standard. It doesn’t get the GTI’s head-turning red trim, but the GTD has bags more kerb appeal than the slightly dowdy Vauxhall Astra BiTurbo, for example. It is, of course, a diesel hot hatch. That sounds like a contradiction-in-terms, but such has diesel technology improved that I’m surprised there aren’t more of them these days. The 2.0 litre diesel unit has been upgraded to produce 181bhp. That’s not as powerful as the petrol GTI, which gets 217bhp, but it still gets from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds – just one second behind the GTI. And it returns 67.3mpg compared to the GTI’s 47.1. Emissions stand at 109g/km, which means it only costs £20 a year in VED. So it’s quick and it’s frugal, but what’s it like to drive? The new Golf has won a slew of awards and motoring journalists all over the

world have praised it for its handling and refinement. So it’s no surprise that the GTD has terrific road manners. It feels wonderfully light and agile and its sharp steering means it’s easy to place into a corner. Those who really like to press on may complain that the supple suspension means the car isn’t as hardcore as some hot hatches. But the flipside is when you’re not pressing on the GTD is a very good cruiser. Wind, road and tyre noise are all very well suppressed and it takes a pretty serious bump or pothole to unsettle the car. There’s a sport button that makes the exhaust sound a touch more sporty, but can be turned off when you just want to pootle along without any fuss. The six speed manual (an excellent-butpricey seven-speed twin-clutch DSG system is also available) has an easy, short throw to it, and sixth gear makes for quiet cruising. While official consumption is 67.3mpg if you use the car in anything like the way it’s intended you won’t get near that. Still, no matter how much I revved it, the trip computer stubbornly stayed above 55mpg. The interior is decked out with natty partleather, part-tartan seats. There’s some GTD related sports touches and the rest of the cabin is as-per the rest of the Golf range. Which means it’s thoughtfully laid out with soft-touch plastics and quality oozing from

every switch and fixture. VW has a earned a reputation for making reliable and durable cars, and the GTD should be no exception. Build quality is excellent, with tight panel gaps and a robust interior that feels up to the ravages of family life. The Golf GTD is an outstanding car in virtually every respect. Nit-pickers might complain that it’s not a “proper” hot hatch but it is. It’s hard to find another car that has such a fine blend of power, pace, economy

and comfort. The only thing it can really be criticised for is the price: at more than £26,000 it isn’t cheap. You can get the 40bhp more powerful GTI for a similar amount. Its biggest threat probably comes from a sister car – the Seat Leon FR diesel. It sits on the same platform and is a very similar car in most respects. The Golf is a little more frugal and a little more refined – but the Seat is nearly £4,000 cheaper. jmckeown@thecourier.co.uk

Mercedes-Benz Citan Compact by Jack McKeown THE ARRIVAL of the Mercedes-Benz Citan last year marked the German manufacturer’s first foray into the small van sector. In a tie-up with Renault (the Citan is based on the Renault Kangoo), the van’s launch meant that, for the first time, fleet buyers could order commercial vehicles from 1,700kg to 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight in a single deal. Some pundits may query why anyone would buy a Citan rather than the cheaper Kangoo. And they may have a point, unless we are talking about the van on test here, the Citan Compact. That’s because Renault stopped offering its version of this particular model in the UK a couple of years ago. The Compact is rather a curious vehicle as it is basically a standard length Citan with the rear end cut off. That means that the cab is far bigger than that in rivals Citroën Nemo, Peugeot Bipper and Fiat Fiorino, which is good thing, but it does give this van a rather strange look – a bit

like a bulldog, which is all front end and not a lot at the back. Power is courtesy of a 1.4-litre Renault turbodiesel powerplant offering 90bhp and 147lb-ft of torque. This gives 61.4 mpg fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 123g/km. In the back, there’s 2.4 cubic metres of loadspace on offer, which is on a par with the rivals in the sector, while payload is 330kg, which is half the 660kg offered by the Nemo/Bipper/ Fiorino. However, standard spec is much higher than these rivals. Adaptive electronic stability control (ESC), comes as part of the £13,375 ex-VAT package, along with ABS brakes, Acceleration Skid Control, Brake Assist, folding front passenger seat, a plastic loadfloor in the rear, cruise control, stop-start technology, remote central locking and Bluetooth connectivity. We are beginning to see more Citans on the roads as fleets see the appeal of driving around with a three-pointed star on their vans. This may be a Renault Kangoo underneath but there are certain things

you get with a Mercedes-Benz that you don’t get with other brands. There are higher residual values for starters, as well as the German company’s unrivalled back-up if you break down. Mercedes-Benz has its own system of dealing with breakdowns thanks to the truck levels of aftercare and says it gets 84% of people moving again rather than having them towed into the nearest garage as most manufacturers do. As for the van itself, the cab is huge for the size of the vehicle and features big supportive seats, a large chunky dash and a handy overhead shelf. The

passenger seat folds right down into the floor and there’s a swivelling bulkhead that protects the driver from moving cargo. This means that loads of up to two metres long can be carried. The rear end doesn’t have a side loading door. The wipe clean floor is a boon and is something that’s an extra in many vans of this size. On the road, the Citan Compact is a lively performer, with ESC fitted as standard. This van has an amazingly tight turning circle too, just what you need for urban deliveries and manoeuvring in tight car parks.
