GETTING MUMS’STARTED OUTFITS
SHINING EXAMPLE
“I knew what I was looking for before I went shopping for my outfit. I wanted a dress and jacket that would complement the bronze bridesmaids’ dresses,” says Isobel, who believes it’s hugely beneficial to know what styles suit your shape before you hit the shops. “My outfit was from Catherine’s of Partick in Glasgow, which was the first shop I went to. I loved the style, the cut and the material. It fitted like a glove too!” Isobel didn’t buy it straight away; she asked Tanya to come back to the boutique with her for a second opinion. “I didn’t tell her which one my favourite was, I just let her tell me hers – fortunately, she chose the same one!” Rather than go for the traditional MOB hat, Isobel sported a chic hatinator. “Sometimes you see the hat before you see the outfit, and I didn’t want that,” she explains. “I wanted the outfit to take control.” The stylish MOB has worn her outfit again since (“it felt just as good as the first time”) and will be shopping again soon ahead of other daughter Stephanie’s wedding this July. “I’ll be going for something in a similar style and cut but probably a different colour. Although who knows, that might change!”

BONUS TIME
A glimpse of some of the added extras your wedding photographer can offer you
W
hen it comes to planning your wedding, finding a great photographer is bound to come pretty high on your to-do list. Every bride wants her photographer to capture beautiful moments from the big day for posterity, but it’s not just about getting a set of wedding prints to show friends and family there’s so much more on offer! Photographers offer a range of additional services, from engagement shoots to slideshows. We’ve put together a list of extras so that you know in advance just what your photographer may be able to do for you.
SIGNING FRAMES
Your photographer can take one of your favourite images from the engagement shoot and print it off on a large signing frame or canvas for your friends and family to write their best wishes around. “We offer this as part of our e-shoot (engagement shoot) package - it makes a nice alternative to a guest book,” explains Pamela Jarvie of Amilight Images. If you would prefer to stick with something more traditional, some photographers can even create a guest book featuring images from your pre-wedding shoot interspersed with blank pages for your guests to sign, giving you the best of both worlds!
BOUDOIR SHOOT
Why not surprise your other half on the morning of your wedding with an album of boudoir shots? “Lots of brides-to-be opt for a boudoir photoshoot prior to their wedding,” says Tracy Gow of Tracy Gow Photography. “I also had a girl in a few weeks ago who was having one to celebrate her first wedding anniversary!” Boudoir shoots involve you getting your hair and make-up done before having a series of tasteful photographs taken in your most beautiful lingerie. Your photographer (most often a woman) will ensure that you are posed in a flattering way to get the best shots possible. And if your H2B wants to do the same, he could have a dudeoir shoot!

ENGAGEMENT SHOOT
Most photographers offer engagement shoots (also known as pre-wedding shoots) as part of their packages or as an optional add-on. You can choose where the shoot takes place - somewhere that’s meaningful to you as a couple, perhaps - and it serves several purposes, from helping you get used to being in front of the camera to getting to know your photographer a bit better. And that works both ways, as John Urquhart of Corona Photographic points out: “I enjoy doing the pre-wedding shoot. I learn about the couple, what they want and if they have any inhibitions.” Stuart Wood of 1500 Photography thinks that pre-wedding shoots are especially useful for nervous grooms. “The guys are the ones that are often a bit more reticent to get in front of the camera but following an engagement shoot, they see it’s not a big chore.” Plus, at the end of it you’ll have some gorgeous shots!
INVITATIONS AND SAVE THE DATES Ok, so your wedding photographer won’t be able to make your stationery - but you can personalise your save the dates and invitations with images from your engagement shoot, so ask your stationer if they could incorporate your photos into their designs. If you know ahead of your engagement shoot that this is something you’d like to do, you could even base the shoot around your theme or colour scheme by using fun props and choosing an appropriate location.
CLAIRE TENNANT PHOTOGRAPHY
1500 PHOTOGRAPHY
In addition to helping you decide on what shots to include in your album. Your photographer can help you decide on how your album should look, from selecting the right style and colour to deciding on what size you’d like it to be. Parents’ albums are another popular choice. Never underestimate how much your mum and dad are going to want to show off your shots!
SLIDESHOWS
This American trend involves you wearing your dress in an unexpected environment (such as by an abandoned building or on a beach) and potentially getting it a bit mucky in the process. It’s not for the faint-hearted, however, and most brides prefer to have what’s known as a Rock the Frock shoot instead. “A lot of girls have spent quite a lot of money on the dress and are reluctant to see it come to harm, so our trash the dress shoots are usually more along the lines of a post-wedding shoot,” agrees Stuart, who positioned one bride by a waterfall with stunning results. “She had it specially done for her first wedding anniversary, which is paper. We made a beautiful print for it and we had the dressmaker on hand so that when the bride came out of the water, the dressmaker was able to clean it immediately. It was really just wet, not dirty.”
JOHN HENDRY PHOTOGRAPHY
TRASH THE DRESS SHOOT
Most photographers also offer the wedding images in the form of a DVD slideshow, which is a convenient way to show your photographs to a large group of friends and family - especially if you weren’t able to hire a wedding filmographer. In fact, some photographers can even put a slideshow of images together for you to display at your evening reception! Those who offer this service will usually pick out the best photographs of the day while you’re having your wedding meal, so that the slideshow is ready for your evening reception. Your evening-only guests will love being able to get a glimpse of your ceremony, and it’s a great way to keep everyone entertained.
SHAREABLE CONTENT
The world’s online so why shouldn’t your wedding be? Gone are the days of simply dusting off your album every so often; couples now want to have shots of their big day at their fingertips so that it’s easy to email photos to overseas relatives and share them via social networks. “We have a password protected online gallery and I give the couples high and low resolution images,” says John. “I can give them a version they can then use on social media, for a wedding website or on Facebook.” Some photographers also provide discs of images or, increasingly, USB sticks (which can hold more and are easier to carry around). A good photographer will only give you the edited images as opposed to every single picture, and you should always ask if there are any limitations on how you reproduce these images.
CANVAS PRINTS
If there’s a particular photograph from your wedding day that you completely love, ask your photographer if they could blow it up and print it on canvas. A stunning photo is a work of art that deserves to be shown off, after all!
SWD
PHOTOBOOTHS
A photobooth is a fun way to entertain your guests, and it’ll give you plenty of memorable shots of your nearest and dearest. Although you can hire a standalone booth, some photographers can set up a makeshift one complete with a backdrop and fun props, and they may even be able to print out photographs of your guests on the spot (usually at a cost).Your guests can take their photos home with them in lieu of favours, or you could even set up a photo guest book where they can paste their pictures in alongside written messages. If your photographer doesn’t list this as a service they provide, there’s no harm in asking to see if they’d oblige!
Our READERS talk
PHOTOGRAPHERS We’ve chosen a package that includes an engagement shoot and an album. I would like a photo booth – I’d like to provide props and ask the photographer to stay on. Jemma We are getting a shoot beside windmills; it’s something a bit different! I thought of a photo booth but decided against it. Nicola Our photographer doesn’t offer packages, but we are getting four mini albums to give to our family or even to carry one around in my handbag to show people! Sam
