SERVING OUR BULL CUSTOMERS SINCE 1944
When you buy a Knoll Crest bull, you do more than purchase an animal – you tie to a program.
Knoll Crest Farm is firmly committed to delivering service with each bull. We conduct our business in a manner that demands providing only the very best genetics for our valued customers. Along with “value-added” genetics, we provide “value-added” service. BULL GUARANTEE: Knoll Crest will insure each bull it sells in an unconditional manner against death or injury for one year. The insurance value shall be for 100% of the first $5,000 cost for a total not to exceed $5,000. Knoll Crest shall receive salvage value, if there is any. Purchaser agrees to have bulls examined (or autopsied) by a licensed veterinarian and notify Knoll Crest immediately. The insurance is to be redeemed in the form of a replacement bull, if available, or a credit on future Knoll Crest Bull purchases. BULL PICK UP AND DELIVERY: Pick up your bull on sale day or within 7 days and receive a $50 discount on each bull purchased. You will receive this discount at checkout time. For bulls that require delivery, we guarantee that freight will not exceed $250 per head to anywhere in the continental US. WINTERING OF BULLS: Knoll Crest will winter your bulls until March 1 at no cost. This will allow producers to buy bulls for future use and not have to take possession until Spring. VOLUME DISCOUNTS: Buyers purchasing 2 or more bulls will receive a volume discount as follows: 2 bulls - 2%, 3 bulls - 3%, 4 bulls - 4%, 5 or more bulls -5 %. PAYMENT SCHEDULE 2012-2013: For taxation purposes, it may be beneficial for some customers to pay for cattle after January 1, 2013. Therefore, we will gladly accept payment at sale (2012) or by January 10, 2013. SEMEN INTEREST: Knoll crest Farm will retain a 1/3 semen interest in every bull selling. In reality, this will affect only a very few bulls that sell. KCF reserves the right to collect semen at KCF’s cost and the buyers’ convenience. KCF retains 1/3 of the semen revenue rights for each bull. The buyer owns 100% possession and 100% salvage value. FLOOR PRICE: Each bull selling will be floored at $1,600 during the auction.
DIFFERENT BREEDS FOR DIFFERENT NEEDS
Many aspects of our seedstock operation here at Knoll Crest Farm would be simplified if we worked with only one breed of cattle. Having three breeds makes us very aware that each breed has traits of excellence that are not exhibited in other breeds. This certainly supports the opportunity and need for crossbreeding in a commercial program. GELBVIEH- Known as the “mother” breed based on superior milk and reproduction. The half-Gelbvieh cow in a commercial program allows one to benefit from hybrid vigor with added muscle and performance in the feeder calf. We find Gelbvieh cattle to have increased stayability (longevity) in our herd. At weaning, we get an advantage in weaning weight over our two British breeds. ANGUS- Essentially every commercial herd in Virginia needs some Angus influence due to the many advantages Angus cattle have to offer. Angus excels in carcass quality, maternal values, acceptance in the market place, etc. The Angus Association has developed programs such as Certified Angus Beef, Carcass EPD’s and many others that continue to put this breed at the forefront of the beef industry. POLLED HEREFORD- In the recent years the Hereford industry has seen a positive turnaround in the interest due to the greater focus on consumer and customer needs. Knoll Crest Farm’s program, designed around the needs of the beef industry through commercial bull customers, has worked well for us with the Polled Hereford breed for over 50 years. We believe there is a great need for Hereford cattle in crossbreeding programs. The black-baldie cow and black baldie feeder calf have and continue to be the choice of many feeder calf producers and feedlot operators. The excellent disposition of the Hereford breed can be strong asset for a family farm or part time operation. This breed has aggressively embraced new genetic improvement technology that will allow Hereford cattle to be competitive as a component of progressive crossbreeding programs.
4
Bull Development and Contemporary Grouping Weaning weights (for 205 day adjusted weights) were taken in May, approximately 30 days prior to weaning. Bulls were weaned on pasture and hay. The “test period” for Average Daily Gain(ADG) was from early June to early October. For that period, bulls continued to graze in 15-30 acre pastures, had access to grass hay and free-choice bull developer composed primarily of commodity ingredients, barley and an intake-limiting ingredient from Purina. The yearling weights are lighter than in years past, but we are confident the bulls are healthier, sounder, and better prepared for the breeding season without need for extra supplementation. The bulls were divided into several contemporary groups for “ratioing” purposes at weaning and yearling, as well as, test gain. They were grouped by breed, and pre-weaning location and management. ET bulls were put into separate contemporary groups. Our goal is to minimize confusion, while practicing sound genetic evaluation principals. Please give Paul a call if you have questions.
American Angus Association $Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has meaning only when used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. For example, just as with EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates average expected differences in the relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment.
How do I use them? $Values should be used to complement the criteria that producers already use when selecting bulls. The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait, as an index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools are the result of the application of industry-relevant market values to Angus genetics for preweaning, feedlot, and carcass merit. The $W, $F, $G and $B values on individual animals and the Sire Evaluation Report may be viewed at www.angus.org. Her 5 natural sons have each been the top yearling weight individual in their calf crop. This cow line has worked extremely well for us, tracing to the dam of KCF Bennett Index, whose daughters have worked very well. We still AI to the Quality M22 bull, whose unique combination of calving ease and ribeye is difficult to match. His 4th generation Pathfinder dam was one of our all-time best females. Note concerning Angus ET Bulls: The ET Angus bulls in the offering generally have lower individual performance than the natural bulls. They were raised at a different location and ,consequently, their actual performance was impaired. With these bulls in particular, it is important to rely more heavily on their EPDs for accurate evaluation of their breeding potential, especially since this entire group has their EPDs enhanced by the Pfizer HD50K genomic profile. Full brothers to lots 35 & 36 have sold to Thomas Angus Ranch (OR), Sitz Angus (MT), Bartels Angus (NE) and Waggoner Farms (MS). McKellar Angus (TX) owns a full sister. Their Protégé dam was the standout ET heifer in her contemporary group, ratioing 139 IMF & 106 RE in a tough contemporary group. She is a maternal sister to Connealy Hemisphere at Select Sires and is a daughter of our donor Breela of Conanga 3991. 3991 records 2@99 BWR, 2@105 WWR, 1@121 YWR, 16@112 IMF, 16@104 RE and is arguably the most special cow to ever leave Connealys’. W148 is off to a great start. These two flush brothers offer truly unique genetics in terms of birth-to-growth, $W and $B, as well as, their pedigree which makes them an outcross for much of the breed.

The dam of lots 37-39 was a private treaty acquisition from Rob & Lori Thomas after purchasing her dam, as well. In her contemporary group as Thomas’, 9705 posted ratios of 95 BWR, 122WWR, 121 YWR, 110 IMF, 148 RE. She’s really stout, moderate, feminine and nearly perfect uddered, like her dam, who records: 2@93 BWR, 2@112 WWR, 2@109 YWR, 2@116 IMF, 2@116 RE. 9705 is particularly unique in that she is +10 CED (top 3% on HD50K for CED), +116 YW and well over the 40/80 threshold for $W/$B.

These flush brother present an opportunity to make improvement in so many traits, thus their index values are all over 40 for $W, and 80 for $B. Plus, they’ve all been genomically tested by HD50k for greater EPD accuracy. Very few sons of the original Conneally Consensus are available, and these are out of our time-tested Pathfinder 1842, who records: 7@108 WWR, 6@106 YWR, 57@104 IMF, 57@104 RE. Her greatest value may be her ability to improve convenience traits like feet, udder quality, fertility, structural soundness and fleshing ability.

This unique bull is red-eyed and red-necked with a great profile, big testicles, and thickness. His birth-to-growth spread and MARB/REA combination is tough to match. His young dam recorded individual ratios of 98 BW, 107 WW, 113YW, 101 IMF, 118 RE and was produced by a matron who records 6@106 WWR, 6@108 YWR, 6@111 IMF, 6@106 RE and now serves as a donor for the Birdsalls’ in New York. These indexes are formulated on general representations of beef production systems used in the U.S. and consider a group of economically relevant traits that characterize those systems. Relative economic values for this group of traits are paired up with the EPD to produce a $ index value. The difference in the $ value of the high index predicts the difference in the profit. Each of the indexes utilizes crossbreeding to capture the value of heterosis. The indexes also include cost of production for all phases of production (cow-calf, feedlot and harvest). The income is derived at the carcass endpoint based on the quality, weight, grade and yield. The economic values are based on past values with some forecast for what economists believe the future holds. The economic values assigned to each trait can be changed at anytime that it looks to be necessary. Baldy Maternal Indexes This is a maternally focused index that has a production system based off of 1000 Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed towards CHB. This index is more critical of CE that the Braham Influence Index and also has significant weight on fertility. There is positive weight on WW and a slightly negative weight on YW which promotes early growth and then a slow down on growth to keep mature size manageable. The weight for IMF is greater that the weight for REA. This is true because of the price difference between the choice-select spread and the fact that there is very little incentive to produce cattle better than a yield grade 3. The question comes up concerning the fact that our branded beef program (CHB) has been successful because of the acceptance of Select cattle. IN answer to this, we are using a crossbreeding production system that could sell cattle on several grids and that our CHB program is installing a choice product. This index is geared to service any commercial program that runs British cross cows. CHB (Certified Hereford Beef) This is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested, so we want then to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have a much heavier weight value on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program. This index could be used heavily in the Midwest where bulls are used in rotational breeding programs to produce cattle in a retained ownership program or simply sold to backgrounders. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that nothing is retained in the herd.

Why Balancers®?
FACT SHEET
Crossbreeding made easy. Wayne Vanderwert, Ph.D., AGA Executive Director
H
Hybrids. It started with singlecross corn; it has dominated broiler and swine production, the state conservation department releases hybrid game fish, and now the car companies are promoting hybrids. All for the same reason; there are advantages to hybrids. The movement to hybrid seedstock in beef production is in its infancy and increased usage in commercial beef production is inevitable. Why…because hybrids simplify many of the challenges a commercial beef producer faces and increase profitability. Hybrids also stabilize breed composition; in turn that provides more, not less, consistency in a calf crop. I remember sitting in Beef Production class and a number of Animal Breeding classes while the professor diagramed crossbreeding systems for beef production. I caught myself wondering how anyone could sleep though such a stimulating lecture. It’s all about heterosis, breed complementarity, maternal heterosis and potentially utilizing terminal breeds, what could be better? I’ve since figured out it was all about maximizing complexity, ignoring simplicity and real-world application…the smartest students may have been the ones napping. Let’s take a look at a basic two-breed rotation. The textbook model assumes that you’ll have bulls of each breed and separate your cows into two breeding groups based on their sire breed. In big herds, where it is feasible, it requires extra labor to sort cows and calves, making sure you don’t split a pair, and it doesn’t fit with improved management practices like rotational grazing. The three-breed textbook model, to take full advantage of maternal heterosis, is just one step more complicated.
The Crossbreeding Reality The reality approach in most herds is to buy a bull of one breed use him two years and then replace him with one from the second breed. This is especially true
in small, single herd sire cowherds, but for simplicity even many big herds rotate breeds every other year. Keeping replacement females every cycle in this system means the resulting calf crop has a variety of percentages, from 50% and up, of the sire breed used in that cycle. How does that provide consistency? The temptation might be to consider straight breeding commercial cows. But the merits of crossbreeding are too great for a commercial cattleman to ignore. Crossbreeding provides heterosis in many traits but in particular the traits that are the most difficult to apply selection pressure for improvement. Cow longevity, lifetime productivity and calf survivability, are examples where heterosis can give a 25 percent or higher advantage.
some Gelbvieh influence in a majority of my cowherd. At that point, I’d switch to Balancers® to stabilize the level of Gelbvieh and British in my herd at a desirable level. Under this scenario, the skeptics argue that somehow the parent breeds will genetically segregate in the offspring, yielding more variability, but this just isn’t the case. Consistency in the calf crop comes from the progeny being very similar in breed composition. The data from the Gelbvieh Alliance and Meat Animal Research Center agree that combining continental and British influence at the right levels pay big dividends in feed efficiency and targeting a desirable, and profitable, level of Yield and Quality grades.
The heterosis advantages in growth and milk are smaller, and in carcass traits we see little hybrid vigor. In these traits breed complementarity, combining breeds with offsetting strengths and weaknesses comes to play.
In the pasture, Gelbvieh influence in your cowherd that will provide great fertility, milk and growth, while keeping mature cow size in check. There is a reason commercial beef producers appreciate the advantages of Balancer bulls. They take the headaches out of crossbreeding, provide heterosis, and let producers focus on the windows of acceptability for feedlot performance and end product merit. Balancers are the easy shortcut to profitability.
The Balancer® Advantage As a commercial producer, if I had straight-bred or high-percentage British cattle, I’d use Gelbvieh bulls until I had

• Energizer topped our Spring 2008 sale to Accelerated Genetics and Wagonhammer Ranches. We continue to use him AI after his untimely death in 2009. He is a true calving ease sire whose progeny exhibit unusual muscle shape, thickness and fleshing ability. His daughters in production are some of our very best.

Bias or Tradition? By: James Bennett
A breed association or seedstock breeder with only one breed has every reason to be bias in support of their breed. I have been there, and done that. Until 1972, I was a second generation biased Polled Hereford breeder. After developing the Red House Bull Evaluation Center, which involved feeding out and performance testing bulls of seven different breeds and working with their respective breeders, I developed the slogan ”Different breeds for different needs.” Our objective at Knoll Crest Farm, to better serve our customers, has caused us to add additional breeds and cross-breeds to our seedstock program. Cross Breeding Advantages Reproduction, Today’s Greatest Advantage – It has been said, reproduction is ten times more important than the second most important trait in cattle production. Research data, but more important to me, Knoll Crest Farm data, would support the advantage you get in conception by crossbreeding. We found our 2012 spring breeding beginning May 10th, to be challenging due to the adverse weather. I contend with dry, 100+ degree weather, is challenging to breed cows or corn. It was evident in our corn with missing grains or ears that did not fill out. Two exceptions to this was some later planted corn that got rain, making high quality and high quantity silage, and our 19 Balancer (Gelbvieh/Angus) heifers that ultrasounded 100% pregnant. All but one bred in the first 21 days. 1 heifer was determined to be carrying a dead fetus. Structural Soundness – Structural soundness, or the lack thereof, can have a great influence in the longevity on an animal. If we increase mature size by 25-40% over time to a breed without a similar increase in the running gear, we might expect to create a problem. Research at the USDA Meat Animal Research Center at Clay Center, NE suggests our primary British breeds now equal or exceed the mature weight of our primary continental breeds. Over the 30+ years of research, the Gelbvieh breed is the only breed that has not increased mature weight. I observe a difference in the structure of our breeds. You can improve structural soundness by cross-breeding. Disposition – Culling is probably the best cure for an attitude problem. As I age, I appreciate Jim’s commitment to eliminate that problem and the risk that goes along with it. That’s not to say that we won’t have bulls get excited there first time in a sale ring or a momma cow that would prefer you not tag her newborn calf. There is a genetic difference in disposition in breeds of cattle. Our Hereford and Hereford cross cattle would be the winners in this category. Of course, if you can fix it by culling, we have been culling the Herefords since 1944. Calves Weaned – Hybrid vigor has a positive effect on a new born calf’s will to live. Under normal conditions the least time it takes to get up and nurse is an advantage, under adverse weather it can be the difference between life and death. My experience with sheep gives me a better appreciation for the will to live, be it at birth or during an illness. I have seen too many tears from our grandchildren unsuccessfully trying to love life back into that crippled, weak, or chilled orphan lamb. They couldn’t understand why the lamb wouldn’t help. I have often said, “Tradition is the greatest handicap to production agriculture.”
