We hope that you are all well and also that Spring brings a Great calf crop your way!. 2012 was challenging to say the least with extreme dry condiCons we were able to make it through the summer and the calf crop actually weaned heavier than a year ago! We aEribute this to our hard working Gelbvieh and Balancer cows that are bred to thrive and survive in tough Colorado range condiCons. Our average rainfall is around 11 inches here and we didn’t come close to that last year. The offering this year is packed with maternal, performance, and carcass quality. Whether Purebred Gelbvieh or Balancer these bulls are ready to go out and get the job done and hopefully add value to your operaCon.. The caEle are developed on a high roughage raCon consisCng of corn silage, ground straw, ground alfalfa, and just a small amount of ground ear corn, along with a good protein and mineral supplement. The bulls are targeted for a 2 ¾ to 3 pound average daily gain that lets them express their geneCc value without burning them up or geQng fat and lazy! We once again PAP tested the bulls this year, and we encourage you to use this informaCon in your selecCon process. Ultrasound and Semen Test data will be on the supplement sheet sale day. All the bulls have been tested negaCve for BVD PI. New Generation AGA EPDs The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.

Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.

Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal more unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.

Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDs The true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.

Growth Traits are More Reliable The new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.

Carcass Traits are Standardized In recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-to-finish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable. Care of your yearling bulls: We would encourage you to take a liEle extra special care of your investment(s). Yearling bulls are sCll growing and we all expect a lot out of them. Limit the breeding season and number of cows that they will have to service. Do not turn young bulls out in the same pasture with mature bulls. A yearling in good condiCon can be expected to service 15-‐25 cows in his ﬁrst season, but he will need to be brought in early and given a liEle extra care aper all that work. Yearlings will start losing their teeth at 15 to 18 months of age and need a liEle TLC if you expect them to grow and develop to their full potenCal. A liEle extra care up front will make your purchases last a lot longer and also make for healthier, beEer bulls down the trail! When you ﬁrst turn your bulls out, watch them and make sure that they are geQng the job at hand done. Also, if they start geQng a liEle run down rest them or give them a liEle extra energy, it will pay dividends in the long run!
