www.tripleplayranches.com Lunch Served at 11:30AM Greetings from the Triple Play Ranches, We would once again like to invite you to the Triple Play Ranches Production Sale. It is a pleasure doing business with each of you and we are grateful for your interest in our breeding programs. As we embark on a new year, it is an exciting time to be in the cattle industry. Cattle prices are as strong as we’ve seen in many years and the future looks bright for beef producers. We try to offer bulls that will help you capitalize on these historic high prices. This year’s offering is a testament to the goals we continue to strive to achieve. While the cattle come from three different ranches and three different breeding/feeding programs we all have one common goal in mind; to develop cattle with a balanced set of traits which will be profitable in today’s beef industry. As you browse through the catalog, we remind you of the new EPD base. In January 2013, the AGA adopted the same EPD base as the Simmental and Red Angus breeds. What this means is that you can now compare numbers for specific traits across all three breeds. Over the past year, the new EPDs have proven to be a great tool for cattleman in making sire selections. Once again, we are honored to have you evaluate our genetics and invite you to visit any of our ranches to view the cattle prior to the sale. We look forward to seeing you on March 12th at Bales Continental Commission.

Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation Simplifies Selection The American Gelbvieh Association joined forces with the Simmental and Red Angus Associations in a multi-breed genetic evaluation. Growth and carcass EPDs for Gelbvieh, Balancer, Simmental, SimAngusTM and Red Angus are directly comparable, simplifying breeding decisions for cow-calf producers. The multi-breed genetic evaluation dataset includes over 11.5 million animal records, and includes four of the seven largest beef breeds in North America - Canadian Angus Association having been included since the onset of this multi-breed collaboration. It is believed to be the largest multi-breed beef cattle genetic evaluation database in the world. This multi-breed evaluation provides for more robust EPDs because of the combined data of millions of animals. “The fact that three of the six largest beef breed associations in the U.S. are sharing the same national cattle evaluation is a great asset for the beef business, especially for commercial producers,” said Frank Padilla, AGA director of breed promotion. “It simplifies genetic selection across breeds and sends a clear message that Gelbvieh breeders are committed to doing what is best for commercial producers. It makes the process of evaluating genetic merit between breeds easier.” EPDs for growth and carcass traits for Gelbvieh, Balancer®, Simmental, SimAngusTM and Red Angus can be directly compared to one another, without any across-breed adjustments.

Sire Selection: A large portion of a livestock producers revenue comes from pounds sold on sale day. If you are looking to put your cow herd on the fast-track to herd improvement, sire selection is key to meeting your goals. Understanding EPD data is a useful tool in making the best sire selection for your herd. Taking into account EPDs, carcass data, structure, and phenotype can help to improve your herd. A brief description of the first seven EPDs is located on page 5 of the catalog.

NOTE:

Bulls will be ultrasounded for carcass data – This information will be available on sale day. A selection of the bulls are currently being tested for homo black and homo polled – this information will also be available on sale day.

Thank you for attending the Triple Play Sale

Calving Ease Direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

EPDs – What they mean?

Birth Weight (BW): – predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight. (actual birth weights can be deceptive as the environment, nutrition, and over due calves are key factors.

Yearling Weight YW): – predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This an indicator growth from birth to yearling.

Weaning Weight (WW): – predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (Adjusted to age of dam and 205 days of age). This an indicator growth from birth to weaning.

Milk (MK):– The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

71

102 20

56

0

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. Calving Ease Daughters (CED): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which heifers have a genetic pre-disposition to calve on their own.

One lucky bull buyer number will be drawn to win $200.00 off any bull in the sale. Here’s how it works: At the end of the sale a buyer number will be drawn. 2014 Barnyard Classic The South Dakota Gelbvieh Association and the South Dakota Junior Gelbvieh Association are preparing to host the 2014 American Gelbvieh Junior Association National Show in Sioux Falls, SD. Junior members and their families travel from all across the United States each year to attend the event. Youth have the opportunity to show and promote their cattle along with participating in contests such as advertising, impromptu speaking, sales talk, judging, fitting, etc. It is an awesome experience for young breeders to gain knowledge of the beef industry and to sharpen leadership skills.
