W ILKINSON G ELBVIEH R ANCH
Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch
Model, CO
is located in the arid prairie of SE Colorado., between Trinidad and LaJunta. Bill and Nancy own around 250 Gelbvieh and Balancer cows, about half of which are registered. Their daughter, Sydney, has recently returned to the ranch, working for CSU Extension as a Regional Specialist for Rural Engagement. Together, the three of them make up Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch.
The land has been in Bill’s family since the early 1950s, when his parents, Charles and Jo Wilkinson, moved their sheep and Hereford cows from the family’s ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. Charles laid the foundation for the Colorado ranch, with his forwardthinking conservation and infrastructure practices - all of which have greatly benefited the Wilkinsons in their operation.
Growing up with Herefords, Bill made some big changes in the ranch’s genetics. After obtaining an Animal Science degree from CSU, then managing a registered Limousin herd in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, Bill moved to West Texas in the early-1980s to manage a ranch there, bringing his Herdbuilder Gold Strike son, a PB Gelbvieh cow and a yearling heifer. He had based his decision to move to the Gelbvieh breed on the landmark 1980’s MARC study, which showed the breed’s superiority in both performance and maternal characteristics. During his time in Crane, Bill met and married Nancy, added Sydney to their family and returned to Colorado in 1990, with 2 PB bulls, 10 PB cows, 15 half-blood females and 65 head of crossbred cows.
Back in Colorado, they went to work to develop their Gelbvieh herd, through select purchases and use of AI and ET. They used Angus sires as the logical choice for breeding heifers and, after seeing the acceptance and marketability of the Gelbvieh-Angus cattle, they began to incorporate Angus genetics into their mature Gelbvieh cowherd. So, when the Balancer program was implemented, the Wilkinsons easily took advantage of the new opportunity.
The environment of SE Colorado can be difficult, but the Gelbvieh cow excels. Forage is almost always in short supply and can be pretty spread out, so the Wilkinsons emphasize the traits that produce cattle which can travel and maintain body condition. Over the years, they have found a following of customers who trust their Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls to do just that. After trying several marketing options, they have now settled into what seems to work best - a Spring Private Treaty Bull Sale, offering replacement heifers in the Spring and bred females in the Fall. Bill and Nancy also maintain a Gelbviehbased commercial herd. With SE Colorado’s environment, cow numbers need to be flex-
ible. So, after the 2nd or 3rd drought cycle, they began to re-emphasize having a quality commercial herd, which can more quickly realize their value when there is a need to reduce numbers.
From the beginning, the Wilkinsons have been actively involved in the promotion and development of the Breed, through Association membership and cattle exhibition at local, state, and national levels. Bill and Nancy have each served as CGA President and both have served two terms on the AGA Board of Directors, with Bill serving 2 years as AGA President (2002-2003). Meanwhile, Sydney was an active participant in the AGJA, annually attending the Junior Classic and serving on the AGJA Board. Nancy was also honored in 1997 as the AGA’s Member of the Year.
“The history of the Gelbvieh breed is a tribute to so many people and we are proud to have been a part of that history since 1986. The road has been a little hard to navigate at times and has had its ups and downs, but we are proud to have been on this path. We are excited to stay the course and see what the next 50 years will bring for the Wilkinson family and the Gelbvieh breed.”

719 680-0462 (Bill)
719 680-0451 (Nancy) | 719 680-7910 (Sydney)
*** This “bid-off” is not an auction – simply a very low-key way for individuals to compete against other to get the bull(s) they want. Each bull will have a floor price posted and we will go through each bull, one by one. Anyone interested in the bull at that price will indicate that interest with a raised hand. If more than one person is interested, we will increase the price incrementally, until only one hand is left in the air, and, at that time, the bull will be declared sold. We will be including bids over the phone, as well as bids left prior to the Sale.
Reminder: This is the Opening Day of our Spring Bull Sale season! Being here simply gives you “first choice” at our offerings. Any bulls remaining will be available after this Saturday until all are sold.
Guarantees:
• Sight Unseen Purchases are Guaranteed - “If you don’t like ‘em, you don’t take ‘em!”
• Bulls are guaranteed for one Breeding Season or one year, whichever comes first. (Disclaimer - Negligence voids guarantee)
♦ Leave Trinidad on 350/160
♦ Continue on 350 (as if you were going to La Junta)
♦ Right before Mile Marker 11 (the mile markers start at the 160/350 “Y”), turn RIGHT onto County Road 48
♦ Go straight EAST for about 8 miles
♦ At the metal cut-out “Wilkinson Ranch” sign, take a right over the cattle guard
♦ Follow that road, until you come to a “Y”, and take the left fork. It will circle down to the barn and corrals.
If coming from La Junta, reverse it and turn LEFT just past Mile Marker 11.
• Delivery Policy – We encourage you to bring your trailers, but we understand that isn’t always feasible. So, we will be happy to deliver your bulls, free of charge, up to 100 miles. After that, we will charge $2/mile.
Note: Wilkinson will retain 1/3 semen interest on all sale bulls. If any bull shows potential for AI use, we would like to collect and market his semen, at the buyer’s convenience.
Note: In cases where a Trich test is needed, we can keep the bulls and have them tested here, then work with the buyer for delivery OR the buyer can take the bulls and have them tested at their home vet, and bill us.
Hint: The map is NOT drawn to scale, but it will give a little better visual to help with the written directions. We feel that this year’s offering is a true representation of what we are working for in our Program. We continue to stay true to our core values of Functionality, Versatility and Profitability, while being responsive to the needs of the industry, our breed and YOU - our customer.
The Bulls
As you look through the catalog, our hope is that you appreciate what you see and get an idea of what we are doing to try to meet each of your individual needs. We still have the performance, but we have injected more calving ease and lower birthweights for those of you who want bulls for first calf heifers. We also think many of the calves will serve as dual-purpose bulls – enough calving ease and performance to use on both heifers and mature cows. To make these improvements, we continue to add new herd sires from some of the nation’s top herds, as well as from our own herd. We also use anywhere from 15-20 AI sires through our breeding program each Spring, with the goal of meeting our core values and improving the versatility of our bull offering. We want everyone who comes to our Sale to be able to find bulls that meet their individual needs, and we think that is possible with this year’s offering.
These bulls have been developed on a high roughage ration, at home in a 3-acre trap. As such, they have had lots of room to travel and have been walked through and handled on a regular basis. All bulls are PI-BVD free and have been ultra-sounded, PAP tested and passed a breeding soundness exam. If Trich tests are required, we can keep the bull(s) and get them tested here, then get them to the buyer. Or, the buyer can take the bulls, have them tested at home and send us the bill. Supplement sheets with Ultrasound data, PAP scores, scrotal measurements and any other updates will be available the week prior to the Kick-Off Saturday, on our website, on Facebook and by request.
Bulls will be eligible to go anywhere in the United States on the day you buy them, with health and brand papers ready to go. If you cannot take them right away, we can keep the bulls here, at a minimal charge. If you need them delivered, we will work with each of you to get them to your place, charging for delivery after the first 100 miles.
Since the bulls are here at home, feel free to give us a call anytime and we will be happy to have you walk through the bulls at your convenience. Then, return for the Opening Day! If you can’t make it that day, we can hold a bid(s) for you OR you can come later and see what bulls remain. Reminder - this is just the “Kick-Off” to our Spring Private Treaty Sales. Traditionally, we sell at least half of the bulls that day, but sometimes sell them all. So, no matter what your schedule, we can try to work around it.
The Heart of the Herd – The Females
If you have gone through and read the footnotes, you will notice that nearly every bull’s dam gets some mention. That’s because we truly love and value our females! Over the years, we have spent a lot of time, energy, and money, selecting the females that will continue to improve our herd. Always keeping our environment and end goals in mind, we have focused on breeding for moderate sized cows, structural soundness, cow efficiency, calf performance, EPD improvement, and, of course, eye appeal. We have been ultra-sounding our yearling females for almost 20 years and that data also helps us evaluate and improve the females. And, just like our Registered herd, our commercial females undergo the same scrutiny! Our cows are expected to cover the country and breed back each year in a timely manner. They have to be good, moderate-sized mamas with udders and teats that hold up over time and they have to raise calves that will generate money for us, whether we sell them as bulls, market steers/heifers or retain them as replacement females.
As a result of our efforts, the quality of heifer calves continues improving. Each Fall after weaning, our normal routine is to evaluate and sort our heifer calves into 3 basic groups – Keepers, Sale replacement heifers and market calves. Twenty years ago, this was a “bottom heavy” split, with us usually only keeping the top 20-25 head and selling the rest at the Sale barn, for replacements or feeders. However, times have changed and so has our herd. We are getting “topheavy” with more and more quality heifers. So, this year we are offering the following several pens of those replacement-quality heifers.

A definite slam dunk heifer bull, that can work on cows, too. He’s an older, fall 2021 born bull, so he’s got a little more size to him now. He is definitely ready to cover a lot of country, while providing an extra shot of milk and longevity to his daughters.

The only reason his dam isn’t a Dam of Distinction is because she was a fallborn heifer, and we held her over for our Spring calving season.

A tad higher Gelbvieh percentage, with an IMF scan data that was off-the charts (128 IMF ratio). He’s an attractive, deep-sided bull, with a lot of flex to his movement, so he can definitely cover the country. Plus, his numbers indicate he could probably be used on heifers as well.
Just a solid bull, with a good EPD profile. These Dirt Road sons tend to exhibit a tad more muscle shape, are good on their feet and legs, and should pass both qualities on to their offspring. His scan data indicates that he will pass on more marbling than what his EPDs show.

One of my favorites. His performance was strong, and he’s got a spread EPD profile to match what we saw – lower BW and big growth. He scanned a high REA, with above average marbling, as well. As a bonus, his half-sisters (Eduardo) are awesome cows, so he should pass those qualities on to his daughters, as well.

A younger calf out of a good young PB mama, so he’s got a tad higher Gelbvieh percentage. His EPD profile and pedigree indicate he will make calves that come easy and still have some growth. Plus, his maternal traits are in the top 10%.
This one has been a favorite of ours since his first few days! One of those calves whose actual numbers are much better than his EPD profile – with a 96 ratio for BW, 104 for WW and 109 for YW, with a ratio of 134 for IMF! What makes KickAss is unique is his phenotype – his thickness, combined with his exceptional rib, just sets him apart! His mother is a Dam of Merit and has been nicknamed “Cleopatra” – as in The Queen. Her impact on our herd has been profound and she just keeps churning out superior cattle, as is evidenced in her two sons - BNW Granger 9126G and BNW Jimbo 1138J. (Note: This cow lost a quarter of her bag last year from a rattlesnake bite and she STILL weaned a 740 lb calf on
of a bag!)

Out of a Dam of Merit, this Eduardo son is a “spread bull” – lower BW and strong performance. He scanned with a big eye and high IMF. His gain on feed has been excellent. This soggy calf will also make some super females – just like his sire has.

Open Replacement Heifers
With weather and machinery issues, we just got these heifers sorted off and home from the feedlot a few days before we clipped them and took their photos and videos. Because of that we haven’t decided exactly how to break the pens, since we have seven Balancers and three Purebreds. Right now, we just have them listed by tattoo, but we will decide on their breakdown before Sale Day.
We will auction off each pen, with the winning bid taking as many as he/she wants in the pen, at the final bid price for each (i.e. “times the money”). If any heifers are not taken, the remaining one(s) will be auctioned off in the same manner. We will do this for each pen.

2023 Reference Sires
Gelbvieh and Balancer EPD Averages – Winter 2023
AGA’s EPD’s are based on a National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) collaboration with the American Simmental Association (ASA) and the American Red Angus (ARA). With this collaboration, our EPD’s are on the same base as these breeds, allowing Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to be compared directly with Simmental and Red Angus cattle. Additionally, DNA testing is currently being incorporated into EPD’s as well. This is
still a “work in progress,” as the AGA is learning how to best incorporate individual animals’ genomic testing into the years of hard data, to better calculate their EPDs. As a result, the EPD’s reported in this catalog may change again - before and/or after they are sold.
MATERNAL TRAITS
Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births, when used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. Milk (Milk): Genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk, in pounds of weaning weight..
Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The Stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
GROWTH TRAITS
Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for weaning weight.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight.
CARCASS TRAITS
Yield grade (YG): Predicts differences in yield grade score. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass weight (CW): Predicts differences in pounds of hot carcass weight.
Ribeye area (REA): Predicts differences in rib-eye area in inches. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Marbling (MB): Predicts differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye. Greater marbling numbers are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
INDEXES - Tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Some equate those traits into a dollar amount.
Total maternal (TM): Combines growth and milk information to predict weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters.
Feeder profit index (FPI): Represents how a bull’s progeny will perform in the feedlot, when sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. Maternal traits are not really a part of this index.
PAP (Pulmonary Artery Pressure) Testing
Quite a few of our customers run cattle at higher elevations, so we started PAP testing our bulls quite a few years ago. Dr. Jeremy Ley of Four Mile Clinic in Canon City has been doing the testing since we began. The following chart is a great tool to help evaluate the level of risk for specific PAP scores at a range of altitudes. (NOTE: These bulls have been raised and fed at home, which is at about 5500’ elevation).PAP RISK FACTOR – based on a development and test elevation between 5500-6000 ft.
For more information on PAP testing, follow the following link (also source for above table): http://guidelines.beefimprovement.org/index.php/Pulmonary_arterial_pressure_(PAP)
