PRESIDENT’S VIEW
The Cost of Success is $25 The $25 per cow members pay in annual herd assessments are the lifeblood of the American Gelbvieh Association. These fees fund more than 40 programs and services for members and their commercial customers. Thank you to all who have completed your 2013 herd assessment. By Rob Arnold AS SEEDSTOCK BREEDERS we measure success in many ways. It is a success if we have a good bull sale, are able to sell all the bulls, average the same or better than last year, gain new customers and keep the old ones. We also measure success by the calving season; number of live calves on the ground, seeing the first results of breeding decisions made nine months ago, and projecting those calves out to the next year and next several years to determine the success of breeding program goals. The success of the American Gelbvieh Association is dependent on an active and involved membership. One of the ways the AGA measures that success is from the number of cows enrolled in the AGA herd book each year. At the close of the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the AGA had 40,830 cows enrolled in the total herd reporting system through the annual herd assessment fee. This was an increase of almost 1,000 cows from a year ago. Now think about what beef producers have been facing the last two years. Severe drought has affected many parts of the country. Input costs are continually increasing. Available land for agriculture use is decreasing. And the beef industry is at the lowest cow numbers since 1952. Yet the AGA was able to increase the number of herd assessments. This is quite an accomplishment and an indicator of the success of individual breeders and the Association as a whole. The $25 per cow fee members pay in herd 6 | APRIL 2013
assessments are the financial lifeblood of the Association. Every cow counts. These fees fund more than 40 programs and services for AGA members and commercial customers. During the budget process last August, the Board of Directors set a goal of maintaining the same number of herd assessments paid by members from the last fiscal year for the current year. We set this goal with confidence in the continued success of individual breeders and the AGA. In the last couple of years the AGA has expanded or added programs and services to help drive member success. Increased national promotion efforts have helped increase demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer seedstock. New member education videos have been created and other tools are being developed to assist members. The New Generation AGA EPDs released in January provide more predicable EPDs and allow Gelbvieh and Balancer animals to be directly compared with Red Angus, Simmental and SimAngus animals, making things easier for commercial customers. All of these things have been made possible through annual herd assessment fees. Think of your herd assessments this way. The sale barn charges $25 to sell a bull and all they do is run it through the ring. The $25 per cow you pay in herd assessments gets you a calf registration, free transfers, pedigree information, EPDs, breed promotion, support staff, junior programs, commercial marketing programs, and the list goes on and on. To those who have paid your 2013 herd assessments, on behalf of the AGA, I thank you. Your commitment to the continued success of your breeding program and the AGA is to be commended. If you haven’t yet completed your herd assessments for the year, I hope that you do so. Herd assessments are the lifeblood of our association, they are the fuel for this machine, but most importantly they fund the cost of success. Let’s continue to grow this Association together! FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW
Does Impacting the Beef Business Require Phenotypes? Genomic-enhanced EPDs for Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals will be a reality by this summer. Collecting and submitting weights, measures and scores are still essential for reliable EPD calculations and making genetic change. By Jim Gibb BARRING ANY MAJOR glitches, American Gelbvieh Association members will have their first genomicenhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) for Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals by this summer. Thanks to the Genomic Pioneers project and the AGA members that have submitted hundreds of samples for 50K testing and donated tens of thousands of dollars to the effort, GE EPDs are about to become reality.
More Genetic Progress The multiple benefits of GE EPDs are very real. GE EPDs provide opportunities to select younger animals with less risk, and according to research, can boost the rate of genetic improvement by up to 40 percent, depending on the trait. This increase can potentially remove years from the time it takes to achieve your goals. For example, if your herd average for marbling EPD is currently 0.02 and your five-year goal is 0.15, the time required to achieve your goal could be reduced from seven years to five by using GE EPDs.
Why Measure? Does this mean phenotypes (weights, measures, scores) will become obsolete? No way. In fact, reliability of the Balancer and Gelbvieh breed specific genomic profile is dependent on the millions of phenotypes in the AGA database. Without this extensive database, built over 40 years by thousands of dedicated AGA members, GE EPDs would be a pipe dream. Moreover, updating genomic profiles requires that the AGA database be constantly updated. It’s an ongoing process.

Information is Power
In keeping with the goals of the AGA Impacting the Beef Business strategic plan, phenotypes for maternal efficiency traits such as mature weight, udder score, body condition score and temperament are critical for the development of a maternal efficiency index. Moreover, ultrasound scanning of yearling bulls and heifers provides essential data for assessing carcass traits. Without these measurements, it is virtually impossible to make the genetic change required to impact the beef business.
Without this extensive database, built over 40 years by thousands of dedicated AGA members, GE EPDs would be a pipe dream.
Make it Routine By integrating data collection with routine management, it has become commonplace for most seedstock producers. A few years ago, Dr. John Pollak, director of the Meat Animal Research Center coined the phrase, “minimal management intrusion” or MMI. This basically just means collecting data when it is most convenient. For example, it’s typically a lot easier to weigh, measure and body condition score cows at pregnancy check than at weaning. The cows are already in the chute and you can catch a weight at the same time, often much easier than at weaning. The bottom line is that GE EPDs are imminent and will be a tremendous asset to enhance the rate of genetic change. This is good for you as seedstock producers and good for your commercial bull buyers as well. However, the need for phenotypes may be more important today than in any time in the history of the beef business. FFF

NEWS ‘N NOTES New AI Sire and Donor Dam Rule
AGJA Members Hammer and Grund Win at NCBA
During the January meeting of the AGA Board of Directors, a new rule regarding AI sires and donor dams was established. As of April 1, 2013, any new AI sire or donor dam must have a 50K DNA test on file with the AGA. To learn more about the AGA's DNA testing services and options, visit the DNA Testing Information page at www.gelbvieh.org.
Four Kansas 4-H members made a splash on the national scene in February. Representing Kansas in the youth events held in conjunction with the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, Grace Hammer of Wallace, Callahan Grund of Sharon Springs, Lauren Geis of Durham and Taylor Ohlde of Easton brought home a first-place team finish and several thousand dollars in prize money.
Summer Sire Summary Data Due Breeders wanting to make sure the data on their animals is included in the 2013 Summer Sire Summary should submit all data to the American Gelbvieh Association office by April 30. This includes registration data, weights, measurements, etc. For questions or more information contact the AGA office.
The team took part in livestock judging, team marketing, public speaking and quiz bowl contests. The team was first place overall in the livestock judging contest and received a $1,000 prize and plaque. Individually, Ohlde was the second high individual, receiving $300, Hammer placed third, earning $200, and Geis was sixth overall.
GPA Applications due April 15 for the 2012 Management Year
In public speaking, Grund was the overall champion, receiving $500. Hammer received fifth place honors and a plaque.
GPA applications for the 2012 management year are due on or before April 15. The application is pretty painless – simply requiring members to list the data they have collected during the last year. Members receive points for having growth and performance records, using AI, doing DNA testing, and using sires that excel in tenderness, carcass value, milk and scrotal circumference.
The team also took part in the beef industry quiz bowl competition which tested their knowledge of animal science and industry information.
Team marketing found the group making sales presentations to groups of seasoned marketing professionals. They competed in two-person teams. Grund and Hammer won second and $300 while Ohlde and Geis were third and earned $200.
Instructions and qualification forms can be found on the AGA website in the Membership/Member Programs section or can be obtained by requesting them from the AGA office. An April 15 deadline allows for review of the forms in time to recognize qualifying members in the July 2013 Herd Reference Edition of the Gelbvieh World. To receive recognition, qualification forms and worksheets should be filled out completely and any supporting documentation included. Multiple memberships that include animals that are managed together can be submitted on one application and will be recognized at the achieved level of those grouped memberships.

BITS ‘N PIECES Collecting Carcass Harvest Data Actual carcass harvest data, in addition to carcass ultrasound data, adds accuracy to the American Gelbvieh Association's EPDs for carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (REA), and marbling (MB). The AGA will work with breeders to increase the amount of carcass data submitted to the AGA for the national cattle evaluation. For more information about harvest data, contact Susan Willmon, AGA director of breed improvement, by calling the AGA office at 303-465-2333.
Did You Know? Herd assessments for the 2011-2012 fiscal year were 923 cows greater than the previous fiscal year. The $25 per cow fee members pay in herd assessments funds more than 40 programs
The list of required data includes: sire identification, dam identification (either an AMGV number or for commercial cows a birth year and approximate breed composition), carcass ID, harvest date, feeding end date, sex, hot carcass weight, fat thickness, ribeye area, marbling score (an actual number such as Sm30, not a Quality Grade such as Ch-). Additional desired data includes: calf birth data or approximate birth range for commercial calves, weaning date and weaning weight, or feeding in weight, in lieu of weaning information, carcass maturity, Yield Grade, and %KPH.

BREED IMPROVEMENT Spring Cleaning: Getting Your Herd Data Out of Your Pocketbook and into the Registry Breeders should submit yearling data on 2012 calves and calving data on the spring 2013 calf crop by April 30 to be included in the summer national cattle evaluation and EPD calculation. Submitting this data via the online animal registry will benefit breeders by increasing the predictability of EPDs. By Kari Otteman WITH SPRING UPON us and the next national cattle evaluation (NCE) around the corner, it is time to be sure all herd data has been submitted to the American Gelbvieh Association. Actual phenotypes - weights, measures and scores - are an important piece in the development of EPDs. Submitting these phenotypes by April 30 will ensure that valuable information is included in the next national cattle evaluation and EPD development which will be released this summer. When that data is out of your pocketbook and entered into the AGA animal registry, it adds value to your breeding program by increasing the predictive power of Gelbvieh and Balancer® EPDs across the entire herd book.
Yearling Data Weights, measures and scores taken this spring provided bull buyers with valuable information to help in making purchasing decisions. Now, get the second benefit of that data by submitting it to the AGA for inclusion in the summer EPD evaluation and sire summary. Weaning and Yearling Weights - Probably one of the easiest measures to get out of your pocketbook and into the animal registry are weaning and yearling weights, as breeders commonly already have this information. With the New Generation AGA EPDs released in January 2013, the AGA now has the ability to include weights on early weaned calves in the national cattle evaluation. Weaning weight and yearling weight EPDs are used in the calculation of EPDs for other traits, making this information all the more valuable for Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders to submit. Ultrasound Data - This spring, consider ultrasound 12 | APRIL 2013
scanning your heifers as well as the bulls. The ideal time to ultrasound scan heifers is when the average contemporary group age is 13-14 months, up to 480 days of age. Heifers tend to show more variation if they are slightly older. Bulls should be scanned at approximately 12 months of age.
Calving Data Data collection doesn’t have to be difficult – it can be practical. All of the information listed below can be collected when tagging a calf. If 2013 herd assessments have already been paid, add information on any calves born this spring, along with the reproductive status of cows in the herd. Getting in the habit of reporting reproductive status codes when you report calf information will make it all the more simple.
When that data is out of your pocketbook and entered into the AGA animal registry, it adds value to your breeding program by increasing the predictive power of Gelbvieh and Balancer® EPDs across the entire herd book. Calving Ease – More than just looking at the birth weight EPD or actual birth weight of a sire, looking at the calving ease EPD of a sire can help reduce the chances of dystocia or calving difficulties in the herd. That is why it is so important to report calving ease on all your calves; it helps the EPD predictions on herd bulls or AI sires to be more accurate and less risky. Udder Score – Gelbvieh cows are notoriously good milking dams, but along with that breeders want to make sure that udder quality in the herd remains acceptable. Cows with good udders will last longer in the herd and have healthier calves. Udder score is composed of teat size and udder suspension, and is recommended by the Beef Improvement Federation to be recorded on

cows within 24 hours after calving. Teat size scores range from 9 (very small) to 1 (very large, balloon shaped). Udder suspension scores range from 9 (very tight) to 1 (very pendulous). For more information on udder score, see the FAQ sheet “Understanding the Gelbvieh Udder Scoring System” on www.gelbvieh.org. Docility – Studies show that docile animals tend to be higher producing not only in the feedlot but also reproductively, not to mention being easier to work with on the ranch. Disposition scoring on a cow can also be taken soon after calving. The scoring system for docility ranges from 1 (calm) to 6 (aggressive). For more information on the disposition scoring system, see the FAQ sheet “Disposition Scoring: a Breeder’s How-To Guide” on www.gelbvieh.org. Disposal Code – This is a big one. If cows fall out of the herd after calving, it is very important to report the reason she was culled in the form of a disposal code. Not correctly reporting a disposal code can unfairly affect the EPDs of the sires of those cows. For example, if a heifer had a dead calf at birth and is given a disposal
code of 9 (culled because she is open), she gets no credit for calving and it affects her sire’s heifer pregnancy data. Correctly reporting disposal codes helps the AGA develop tools that help breeders select for animals that will have the best longevity in the cow herd.
Having accurate exposure data helps the AGA produce EPDs and indexes that proves we own the maternal traits. Exposure Data - Start thinking about data that can be reported during breeding season. Simmental, Red Angus and Gelbvieh Break New Ground with Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation THE IDEA OF breeds running a single-acrossbreed evaluation, with all the breeds being on the same base so the expected progeny differences (EPDs) are directly comparable, has long been a dream for many of us in the industry. Now the Simmental, Red Angus, Canadian Angus (reds), and Gelbvieh associations are running a multi-breed genetic evaluation together (MBGE), and releasing their EPDs on the same base and scale. This means the EPDs are directly comparable between the participating breeds without any conversion factors, making selection decisions by commercial producers using these breeds and their hybrids easy in a crossbreeding system. The average of the different breeds can be found in table 1. In addition to the above breeds, Maine-Anjou and Chianina also
Maine, Chi and American are participating in the MBGE, Simmental database, we are now but they are releasing their EPDs adding new animal information on their traditional base. Data at record speed. Who would guess from Canadian Angus’ black cattle that by 2013, we could increase are also in the MBGE, but their our database by nearly one-half EPDs are not released because the million new animals per year?” Canadian Angus Association gets their black Angus EPDs from Angus Genetics, “Data is knowledge and knowledge is Inc. This makes power and opportunity...Who would guess for a huge data that by 2013, we could increase our base that is database by nearly one-half million new comparable to American Angus’ animals per year?” - Dr. Jerry Lipsey data base. According to Dr. Jerry Lipsey, CEO of the American Simmental Association where the MBGE is done, “Data is knowledge and knowledge is power and opportunity. With the addition of American and Canadian Gelbvieh to our Red Angus of America, Canadian Angus (both red and black),
Not only does the MBGE have quantity, but it is also as technically advanced as any in the industry, including the incorporation of genomics for both purebreds and hybrids into the analysis. In fact, Simmental was the first to produce a genomic marker assisted EPD when they released their tenderness EPD.

What is next to improve the MBGE? According to Larry Keenan, breed improvement specialist for Red Angus Association of America (RAAA), “The RAAA Technical Committee continues to study calving ease direct and calving ease maternal EPDs calculated on the multi-breed model (currently Red Angus’ are breed specific), and we anticipate a decision on the acceptance of those EPDs to be made by the summer of 2013 MBGE. Moving forward, we will endeavor to transition all EPDs to the multibreed model, with stayability and heifer pregnancy first in line.” Also, Dr. Wade Shafer, chief operating officer of American Simmental Association, is currently working on more frequent EPD analysis than the traditional twice a year national cattle evaluation practiced by most breed associations. Over 20 years ago, Dr. Jim Gibb, executive director of the American Gelbvieh Association, organized a meeting to explore ways for breeds to work together, and attempts have been made many times since by various groups of breeds. Finally with this MBGE displaying EPDs on the same base and scale, the fruition of these many efforts is finally starting to come to pass. It is an exciting time in our industry! — Dr. Bob Hough [Dr. Bob Hough has served as the executive vice president of the Red Angus Association of American and more recently as executive vice president of the North American Limousin Foundation from 2009 to early 2011. He is now a consultant, freelance writer and semiretired.]

MANAGEMENT Body Condition Scoring App: NUBeef-BCS The body condition score of your cow herd is a much better indicator of the effectiveness of the nutrition program than body weight of the cows or average weight of the cow herd. By Rick Rasby BODY CONDITION OF spring calving cows can be related to quality of colostrum produced at calving and the amount of immunoglobulin in the blood stream of the calf by 24 hours after calving. Calves from dams that calve in a body condition score of five have more immunoglobulin in their blood stream by 24 hours after birth as compared to calves from cows that calve in a lower body condition score. In addition, mature cows that calve in a body condition score of five have

a shorter interval from calving to their first estrus after calving compared to cows that calve in a lower body condition score. The NUBeef-BCS app allows producers to visually assess their cow herd and their nutrition program using a number system that describes the amount of condition or fat reserve of the cow. When using the NUBeef-BCS app, producers can simply take photos of their beef cows and then score cows at important times throughout the year, such as at weaning, 80 days before the start of calving, at calving, and before the start of the breeding season. Photos and body condition assessments can be recorded throughout the year because the app allows for pictures at multiple times throughout the year. There is also a guide in the app to help the user condition score their herd. This app is a must for ranch managers to teach useful management skills to their employees. Ranch employees can take pictures of representative cows in the herd, score the cows, save the record and discuss body condition of the cows and management strategies to implement. The Market Journal, February 1, segment on “Cattle Calving and Grazing” includes a brief discussion and demonstration of the app. The app also has an educational component where users can learn the body condition scoring system by practicing scoring cows that are scored and stored as a component of the app. The educational component can be used by instructors teaching beef cow management concepts to students at all levels: high school, junior college and four-year colleges. NUBeef-BCS may be purchased and downloaded from Google Play and Apple App iStore. Editor’s note: Rick Rasby is a beef specialist at the University of Nebraska.
Guidelines for Body Condition Scores A BODY CONDITION score (BCS) describes the degree of fatness of a cow. Seedstock producers can use body condition scoring at any point during the year, but it is best to select the same time each year to evaluate your herd for comparisons. Some breeders note a BCS during AI breeding season as the cows come through the chute. Others will make notes at weaning time while gathering mature cow weights. Below are the guidelines for each body condition score. BCS 1: Emaciated with muscle atrophy and no detectable fat. Tail head and ribs project predominately. The animal is physically weak. BCS 2: Poor condition with muscle atrophy and no detectable fat. Tail head and ribs prominent. BCS 3: Thin condition with slight muscle atrophy. All ribs are visible. Very little detectable fat. BCS 4: Borderline condition with the outline of the
spine slightly visible. Outline of 3 to 5 ribs visible with some fat over ribs and hips. BCS 5: Moderate to good overall appearance. Outline of spine is no longer visible. The outline of 1 to 2 ribs is visible. Fat over hips but hips are still visible. BCS 6: High moderate condition with no ribs or spine visible. Pressure applied to feel bone structure. There is some fat in brisket and flanks. BCS 7: Good, fleshy appearance. Hips slightly visible, but ribs and spine are not visible. Fat in brisket and flanks with slight udder and tail head fat BCS 8: Fat, fleshy and overconditioned. Bone structure is not visible. Large patchy fat deposits over ribs, around tail head and brisket. BCS 9: Extremely fat, wasty and patchy. Mobility possibly impaired. Bone structure not visible. Extreme fat deposits over ribs, around tail head and brisket. FFF

CUSTOMER SERVICE Following the Sale With the annual production sale now over, the customer service is just beginning. A few simple post-sale tasks such as transferring ownership and updating customer information will help keep your customers coming back year after year. By AGA Staff WE’VE ALL HEARD that a happy customer tells two people about an experience and an unhappy customer tells ten. The time after a sale is crucial for the seller to make sure all customers are happy and satisfied with the purchase. Getting feedback, staying in contact and a few other small gestures will go a long way in retaining that customer and ensuring repeat business. Important after-sale tasks to remember include follow-up or thank you letters, transferring ownership, guaranteeing satisfaction and creating customer files. It is good practice to send a follow-up letter to buyers thanking them for their purchases. Following up after the sale is crucial for keeping the buyer-seller relationship open and operating. Much like sending a thank you letter after a job interview or receiving a gift, showing your gratitude and appreciation to your bull or heifer buyer is a gesture that is valued and respected. Enclose a few business cards in the letter to buyers and ask them to recommend your services to other breeders. Send letters to those potential buyers who did not purchase anything and ask them how you might assist them and their future needs. When following up with the buyer, assure them that the ownership of the animal will be transferred to their name. A great source of aggravation for many people is not receiving registration papers in a timely manner. The practice of transferring ownership authenticates pedigree, performance and genetic information and is a value added marketing service the seller can provide that customers will appreciate. Guaranteeing satisfaction is something all consumers are familiar with. Whether selling furniture, shampoo, or a new car, products that offer this promise have to deliver and a cattle breeder’s program should be no different. To ensure customer satisfaction, produce and market a product that meets and exceeds customer 20 | APRIL 2013
demands. If a customer purchases a bull that doesn’t work out, replace the bull or offer a refund. An unhappy customer can undo a lot of valuable advertising and promotion, whereas a satisfied customer means repeat business.
Creating a customer file is another resource for keeping up-todate on purchaser information. Start information files on each customer and include the following things: •
Name, address, telephone number, email address
•
AGA member or non-member number to facilitate transfers
•
First names of spouse and children
•
Name of farm manager or herdsman
•
All purchases made, date of purchase, name or identification number, sex and sire and dam of animals purchased, amounts paid per head
•
Breeding on the bulls purchased so you can help buyers avoid inbreeding
•
Directions to the farm or ranch
•
Information on potential customers and existing customers.
Keeping customers happy and encouraging their recommendation of your services is free advertising and promotion for your operation. Using these concepts will ensure that the seller is more knowledgeable about the buyer and provides an open line of communication to encourage future sales. Not only future profit is at stake but the reputation of the seller as well. Keeping customers happy and encouraging their recommendation of your services is free advertising and promotion for your operation. FFF

MANAGEMENT Cow Temperament Affects Reproduction Pregnancy rates were improved in groups of cows with less aggressive temperaments as found in recent research. Heifers acclimated to handling at about six months of age reached puberty at an earlier age and had lower chute exit scores than heifers handled less frequently. Acclimating young animals to handling and culling on temperament may have beneficial effects on reproduction in beef cattle. SOMETIMES WE WONDER if that cow rattling the chute is worth keeping. Recent research suggests maybe not, said Elaine Grings, SDSU Extension cow-calf management and production specialist. Grings points to studies conducted several years ago with Brahman-crosses which found that cows with
excitable temperaments had lower pregnancy rates than their calmer herdmates. Researchers at Oregon State University expanded the study to look at the effect of cattle temperament and acclimation to handling on reproductive performance in Angus × Hereford cross cows. Their results were reported in the October issue of the Journal of Animal Science.
More than 400 spring-calving range cows at two locations in eastern Oregon were tested for temperament using both a chute score and measurement of exit velocity from a squeeze chute. The chute score is a five-point scale; one being assigned calm cattle which exhibited no movement and a five assigned to violent animals which exhibited continuous struggling.

Exit velocity was also measured with an infrared sensor and converted to a one to five point scale; one given to the slowest and five to the fastest. The chute and exit scores were averaged to give a temperament score, animals with a score of less than three received an adequate score whereas, animals receiving a three or greater received a temperament score of aggressive. About 25 percent of the cows were scored as aggressive and these cows had lower pregnancy rates of 89 percent compared to the adequate temperament cows, which had a pregnancy rate of 95 percent. "At one location, cows were bred by AI and then exposed to natural service clean up bulls. The second location used natural service mating only," Grings said. "The fact that bulls were used indicates that the lowered pregnancy rates in the aggressive cows were not due only to stress during handling at AI."

Selling 100 female lots Gelbvieh, Shorthorn, Simmental, Red Angus
Cow body condition and calf birth and weaning weights were not different between the groups and there were also no difference between groups in pregnancy loss or loss of calves from birth to weaning. Decreased weight of calves weaned per cow exposed in the aggressive groups was related to the effect on pregnancy rate alone. "Based on this and other studies, the researchers suggest culling on temperament or adapting cattle to handling could help in maximizing reproductive performance in beef cows," she said. These researchers reported on a second study on the effect of acclimating heifers to handling on reproductive performance. After weaning, they divided six-month-old heifers into two groups of about 44 heifers each. One group was processed through a handling facility three times a week for four weeks. Heifers receiving more frequent handling reached puberty at an earlier age than their herdmates, but pregnancy rates after AI were not different. The more frequently-handled heifers had lower exit scores, but not chute scores compared to those handled less frequently. "The researchers therefore suggest that exposing heifers to handling and human interaction may improve reproduction," Grings said. "They do caution that this training needs to occur when animals are fairly young." In a previous study, when they attempted to acclimate mature cows to handling, they were not successful at improving pregnancy rates. Grings says there are still some questions left to be answered. "We still need to determine, what the minimum amount of handling needed to train an animal and what is the best age for training," she said. FFF

MANAGEMENT Disposition Scoring Guidelines The following is the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) guideline for disposition scoring. The American Gelbvieh Association has adopted this BIF disposition scoring system and recommends Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders use the following one through six scores when taking and submitting disposition scores. Score 1 – Docile. Mild disposition. Gentle and easily handled. Stands and moves slowly during processing. Undisturbed, settled, somewhat dull. Does not pull on headgate when in chute. Exits chute calmly.
jumping and bellowing while in chute. Exits chute frantically and may exhibit attack behavior when handled alone. Score 6 – Very Aggressive.
Extremely aggressive temperament. Thrashes about or attacks wildly when confined in small, tight places. Pronounced attack behavior. FFF

BREED PROMOTION MINUTE
What I’ve Learned Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle are wellpositioned to impact the beef business. Seedstock breeders need to provide the genetics that meet the demands of the feedyard managers, heifer developers, and commercial bull buyers to keep customers. By Frank Padilla
• Feedyard managers believe that genetics play a major role in overall feedyard performance and carcass value; seedstock producers should be selecting for these traits.
THE ODOMETER ON the car registers it has traveled 5,982 miles in less than 30 days. It has stopped at nine feedyards with a capacity of 30,000 head or larger. It pulled into a heifer development facility that develops and artificially inseminates 4,000 head of heifers each year for clients. It has been parked at 11 production sales with commercial bull buyers present. It has traveled onto five commercial ranching operations. It stopped at four sale barns having feeder cattle sales that particular day.
Heifer Developers
All of these stops are customers of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. Each is an influencer and demands a product that is profitable. Each customer buys for their reasons. They are relevant to impacting the beef business.
• Selecting for carcass value in heifers shows improvement in progeny carcass value.
Here are a few highlights of what these individuals shared during the visit.
Feedyard Managers • They want cattle that will grow and gain fast. Seek cattle with high average daily gains while reaching desired pay weight. The carcass weight target is 9001,000 pounds. • Want cattle that are feed efficient. Feed conversion is very important to profitability. • Cattle with Choice grade carcasses when finished make them more money. • Believe crossbred animals gain better, give them more pay weight and better feed conversion, with fewer health problems. 28 | APRIL 2013
• Seek out cattle that have a history of above yard average performance and carcass value. Attempt to buy these cattle each year. Not breed specific but market oriented. One manager said, “We blackball the wrecks. Buy and pay premiums for the rock stars. It makes us more money in the long run.”
• Reproductive performance is better on heifers that come from producers who have shorter calving seasons. • Proper heifer development adds to stayability and productivity. • Crossbred females show a higher first time service conception rate, as well as higher thirty month pregnancy rate over straightbreds.
• Crossbred females gain flesh with less feed on a development ration than do straightbreds.
Commercial Bull Buyers • They buy Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls to get heterosis and to add pounds at weaning, plus maternal benefits. • Use visual appraisal when selecting bulls. Look at body composition and balance. • Sound structure in regards to feet and legs is very important. One buyer said, “I’m not going to invest in a bull that may last only two years because of structure problems. That’s why I’m looking at Gelbvieh, because the bulls I bought before of other breeds did have structure problems.” • Note and make selections based on if an animal has been DNA tested as homozygous polled and homozygous black, and want the information
printed in the catalog.
• Transfer and pedigree information is important.
• They don’t want problems. Calving ease and docility are a big part of selection criteria.
• Commercial bull buyers look to their seedstock providers for advice and industry knowledge.
• Growth and pounds are important. They want as much as what their environment will stand without excessive feed inputs. “We still sell them by the pound,” commented another buyer.
Impacting the beef business takes work. It takes commitment. It takes time, money, and vision. It’s not only about product and numbers – it is about building relationships with others in our industry outside of the breed. Knowledge and accurate information is power but it must be shared with those who are decision makers in the industry. It can change perception and bring reality to the forefront.
• They buy from the supplier they do because of customer service, trust, and quality of the product. A buyer said, “I like the fact that he understands the industry. That he knows the profit drivers and follows up with me to hear both the good and the bad so he can work to improve the cattle he’s selling and most importantly what I’m buying.” • One buyer asked why they had never seen The Profit Picture before seeing it as a handout at the sale location. I informed him that it and the Gelbvieh World subscription were free and would be mailed to them if their animals had been transferred into their names. He’d purchased Gelbvieh bulls two years ago after reading the “Add Pounds. Add Profit.” insert.
After all these miles, I learned what I already knew. The best way to find out what you have is to ask a person what they like and what they don’t like about your product or service. Unless that is done, one is assuming they know the answer. It’s never good to assume anything. The Gelbvieh breed is positioned for continued success and growth. Gelbvieh and Balancer fit for the reasons that people buy. Learning what you don’t know is important. Some believe it to be more important than what you do know……or think you know. FFF

MANAGEMENT Bull Management in Multi-Sire Pastures Prior to turning out bulls in multi-sire pastures, allow bulls to establish their peeking order, avoid mixing ages, and be sure the bulls are still sound. Following these simple steps will help increase cow pregnancy rate. By Dr. Glenn Selk BEFORE THE BREEDING season begins, a few simple management procedures involving the bulls can increase the likelihood of a high pregnancy percentage among the cows. In multi-sire pastures, make certain that the bulls that will be pastured together have been in a common trap or pasture prior to the breeding season. Bulls WILL establish a social hierarchy. It is better to get this done
before the breeding season begins rather than wait until they are first placed with the cows. Put young bulls with young bulls and mature bulls with mature bulls. Mixing the ages will result in the mature bull dominating the younger bull completely, and in some instances causing a serious injury. If the plan is to rotate bulls during the breeding season, then use the mature bulls first, and follow with the yearling bulls in the last third of the breeding season. In this way, the young bulls will have fewer cows to settle, and will be one to two months older when they start breeding. Check the feet and have hoof trimming completed at least 30 days prior to the start of the breeding season to avoid lame or sore-footed bulls at the important beginning of the breeding season. Editor’s note: Dr. Glenn Selk is a professor and animal reproduction specialist in animal science at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.

COMMUNICATION NOTE Production Schedule Gelbvieh World The Profit Picture
How Ranchers Can Use Facebook Spring is one of the busiest seasons on the farm or ranch. Calving, breeding and turning cows out to pasture all provide excellent fodder for Facebook updates. Facebook is a great tool to promote your breeding program. By Rachel Cutrer ACCORDING TO THEIR corporate page, Facebook’s mission is “to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” Founded in 2004, Facebook users can communicate with one another through chat, messaging, wall posts, and status updates. The online site currently boasts over 500 million active users around the world. Here is a look at how ranchers can use Facebook for personal and business networking.
Getting Started To join Facebook, visit facebook. com and register for an account, which is completely free. Within a matter of minutes you can join and start participating on this site. Before signing up, decide if you wish to register as an individual, a business, or both. It seems that there is a slight trend in the livestock community to create Facebook accounts under business names. An example of how to accomplish this would be to list the first name as “Jones” and the last name as “Angus”, thus creating a personal account for a business. 32 | APRIL 2013
However, the more appropriate use of the online community is to first create a personal account for yourself, and then create a Fan Page for your business. Initially, new users should complete as much information as possible on their profile page. Upload a profile picture, fill out the bio section, list some hobbies and interests, and create photo albums. Next, find close friends and leave a comment on their walls, as well as updating your own status. These activities will help you get a feel for the online community and build your Facebook skills. After creating a personal account, you will then want to find online friends. Users can search for people by typing that person’s name in the search field, then clicking “Add as a Friend” beside the people they wish to connect with. Facebook can also help you find friends by searching through your email contacts and matching addresses with member accounts. Once you get started with a few friends, Facebook will continue to offer friend

It is important to update these subpages in the same manner you update a personal page. Include your ranch logo or a unique photo on your ranch’s Fan Page. Create online photo galleries featuring interesting pictures of show champions, sires, or family photos. Update your Fan Page status with pertinent news on a regular basis. Recruit friends to join this page by “suggesting they like” the site, another feature of the software. However, avoid spamming others and follow the general etiquette of only inviting people to join your page once, as opposed to inviting the same people to join your page over and over again.
suggestions through its linking. According to the founder of this social network, the average user has 130 friends online.
Creating a Page for Your Business While individuals maintain personal accounts, they can set up Fan Pages for businesses or organizations; or even community pages for unique hobbies or interests. As the creator of such pages, you will have administrative rights to update the content and photos. After creating a Fan Page, fellow users can choose to “like” your page. Once someone “likes” a page, the page’s status updates will appear on all followers’ news feeds. In 2010, there were over 900 million pages, groups, or community pages that people interacted with on Facebook, and the average user “liked” 80 Fan Pages.
Tagging is a common practice among Facebook users that allows users to identify Facebook friends in photos and status updates. To tag a friend in a photo, you simply click on the person in the photo and choose

the option that says “tag this photo.” You then type the name of the person to let others know who is in the photo. To tag someone in your status update type the “@” symbol in the status box, a drop down menu will appear showing the names of your friends, highlight and click the preferred names. Of course, users can “un-tag” themselves if they desire more privacy.
Privacy Concerns Facebook users are able to control the amount of information they wish to share, or keep private. After creating your account, it is a good idea to check the default privacy settings and make adjustments depending on your level of comfort. To access these settings, click on the “Profile” tab in the upper right corner of the screen, then choose “Privacy Settings.” A very low level of privacy would be allowing everyone to see everything you post on Facebook, where a high level of privacy allows only your confirmed friends to see your information. As with any promotional tool, remember to maintain a high level of professionalism in
all of your online activities, especially Facebook. Go Mobile! In 2010, there were more than 200 million users who accessed Facebook through their mobile devices. Those who use an iPhone or Blackberry often find that there is a Facebook application preloaded on these phones. Establishing a mobile account is as easy as following a simple application wizard and answering a few questions. A benefit of being a mobile user is the ability to upload photos from your camera phone to your Facebook wall. Facebook offers a variety of options for both individuals and businesses to get connected – and stay connected to the worldwide community. The immense popularity of this online phenomenon, combined with the fact that it is free, makes it a tool that modern livestock merchandisers should consider utilizing. ©2011 Editor’s note: This article was written by Rachel Cutrer of Modern Livestock Merchandising.

By using social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blog sites, you can advertise and even educate people about your operation. By being more proactive on social media sites, we can help consumers learn about our industry and how we operate.
IN TODAY’S EVER changing world, we have become more reliant on technology. From our vehicles to farm implements, and even in our livestock and crops, technology has revolutionized the way we farm. Communication technologies are also revolutionizing the way we market our product to our customers, as well as communicate to consumers.
One of the great ways to get your operation using social media is through some of the contests that the AGJA provides. These contests help people embrace new innovative technologies. AGJA offers the video contest which allows you to create educational content to share with other people. Another contest is the Facebook Page contest for the state organizations.
