FROM THE CORNER OFFICE
ONWARD AND UPWARD - AGJA LOOKS TO THE FUTURE by Megan Slater
E
very year we dedicate the August issue of Gelbvieh World to junior programs and highlight the youth that make up the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. Last year, we celebrated the 40th junior nationals within the breed and this year we celebrate one of the largest junior national shows in recent history, with nearly 200 participants from 20 states in attendance. For reference, for the last five junior national shows, the average number of exhibitors was 143. An increase of nearly 50 participants is an exciting sign of growth within the organization and we look forward to seeing that continue. We are fortunate to have such a strong junior association because of the people it’s made up of (juniors, parents and supporters). All of the exhibitors and their families who attend junior nationals are so welcoming to first time participants and attendees and are always there to lend a helping hand. The mentor protégé program helps establish relationships from the first day of the classic and by the end there may be a tear or two shed while saying goodbye to new friends. The connections the juniors make while at the show can last a lifetime and the network of those tied to the AGJA continues to grow. There have been countless individuals who have come through the AGJA and become leaders in not only the breed but also within the industry. Several past AGJA board members have served on the AGA board of directors, and many have held a leadership role. Even if they are no longer involved in the cattle industry,

or agriculture for that matter, they still remember their days in the AGJA and the valuable lessons their time in the organization and at the junior classic taught them. The AGJA Junior Classic isn’t just “another cattle show”. Sure, cattle are exhibited, and it is always exciting to take home a few ribbons and maybe a banner, but the real rewards of junior nationals are the connections and friendships made, experience gained, and life skills learned. Contests like prepared speaking and sales talk teach important verbal communication skills in a world that has gone so digital. Quiz bowl and skill-athon contests help sharpen the minds of
“IF THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS HAVE SHOWN US ANYTHING, IT IS THAT WE CAN ’T PREDICT WHAT IS COMING AT US IN THE FUTURE OR WHAT CHALLENGES LIE AHEAD, BUT WE CAN PREPARE OUR YOUTH TO BE BETTER EQUIPPED TO HANDLE THOSE CHALLENGES.” — Megan Slater
young cattlemen and women by testing their knowledge of the beef industry. Livestock judging instills communication, problem solving and decision-making. The list goes on and on with all of the valuable lessons that can be learned from the multiple contests that are set on a national stage.
The support that so many people have for the organization is incredible; from those who have been a member themselves to those whose children have gone through the program, or those who see the value in a junior organization. It’s extraordinary to see people spend a great deal of time and money on an organization their children are no longer directly involved in because of the impact it has had on their families. If the last couple of years have shown us anything, it is that we can’t predict what is coming at us in the future or what challenges lie ahead, but we can prepare our youth to be better equipped to handle those challenges. One of my favorite quotes as it relates to the AGJA comes from Franklin D. Roosevelt who once said, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future”. I am a firm believer that it is organizations like the AGJA and events like the junior classic that help prepare youth for a bright future. Things like strong work ethic, good morals values, and the skills I’ve mentioned above are the tools that will always prove to be valuable in any series of events. Thank you to those parents who are choosing to raise your children in programs like the AGJA, thank you to those supporters who see the value in the organization, and thank you to the members of the AGJA for being active within the beef industry and our future leaders. JUNIOR CLASSIC REFLECTIONS by Klint Sickler
I
n the summer of 1993, my parents loaded my sister and I into an extended cab Ford pickup and set off for our first junior classic in Kearney, Nebraska. We had shown cattle regionally, and at our local county fair, but this was our first time heading to the ‘big stage’. While most of the details have been lost to time, the memories of huddling under the bleachers while a tornado ripped through the fairground, winning my first banner, and winning the Junior Quiz Bowl will always be with me. I remember going into that Classic not knowing anyone, but through the interactions throughout the week, I was quickly introduced to the Grund, Dunn, Taubenheim, Warner, Starr, and Beastrom families, as well as countless other friends and families. Those memories, and the relationships that were formed, are something that can’t be taken away. Last week, I loaded our family and 4 animals on the trailer and began the 900 mile journey to Salina, Kansas, so they could attend their first Junior Classic. Nearly 30 years after my first, there we were, I watched as my kids were brought into the Junior family – ironically by children of the mentors who helped me through my first time. I watched as they participated in many of the same contests
that I competed in. I watched them grow as individuals, in their self confidence, and in their knowledge and love of the Gelbvieh breed. While we didn’t take home any banners or hardware, the conversation in the pickup on the way home centered on all of the upcoming locations and if we are going. To put it plainly – they’re hooked.
impressed with the youth of our breed. The AGJA is hands down one of the premiere junior organizations in the country. Even more reassuring is that we continue to shatter records from prior years. This year saw 199 participants and nearly 350 head of cattle – the biggest on record! My hat is off to Jake Renner, the junior advisors – Lori Maude, Andrea Murray, and Tom Vehige, and the entire While there’s definitely a sense of junior board for putting on a truly first nostalgia that comes along with watching class event. The amount of planning, your own children participate in coordination, and effort that goes into something that means so much to you, it’s an event of this magnitude does not go even more fulfilling to see them grow and unnoticed. Thank you for all that you do take the same joy in those activities. I’ve for our breed and our youth! A special visited with quite a few folks and asked if “Thank You” goes to all of the donors they would be attending, and the standard who give of their time, their talents, and answer is “We really don’t show cattle”. I’m their financial support to make sure here to tell you that the cattle show is just these events can happen. It takes a small a small part of the event. From knowledge army to put on an event like this, and we building events like the Quiz Bowl, to literally couldn’t do it without you! educational activities like watching a live OPU harvest on a donor female, or I’d encourage every member to take the time to attend a junior classic chances to socialize and meet kids from across the U.S. that share a common bond in the future. These youth are truly of Gelbvieh cattle – there is something for impressive and will blow you away with everyone. If showing is more your thing, their attitudes, their enthusiasm, and there is team fitting, showmanship, and leadership. I’ve seen the future of the the Balancer® and Gelbvieh shows. Gelbvieh breed, and I’m confident that we are in good hands! F After spending a week in Salina, I can honestly say that I am extremely

STAYING HumbleHEAT IN THE
by Jake W. Renner, M.S.
T
he American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) and its members headed to Kansas for the 2022 AGJA Crossroads Classic. Countless hours in conversation with the 10-member board of directors, sponsors, families, our generous host state, and other supporters lead to another successful event for the association. Once again, I am reminded of the blessings that surround our junior members and their families. We came with hopeful hearts and goals set long before our arrival in Salina and left with memories to last a lifetime. We continue to stand strong as a membership and a breed because of our innate ability to see the best in others and provide an atmosphere of inclusion. The 2022 Classic marks the most rookie exhibitors (first year classic attendance) I have seen in my four years with the American Gelbvieh Association. Through activities like the mentor/protégé program, opening ceremonies, meals, and the dance we hope that all new members in attendance felt welcome and appreciated. They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. I disagree. If you love what you do, you should be working every day, harder than the next, in an effort to leave a legacy.
The 2022 AGJA Crossroads Classic marks four junior national events under my belt. We were fortunate enough to head to my home state of Kansas and I cannot say enough great things about the volunteers from the Kansas Gelbvieh Junior Association. It takes a village and the Kansas crew truly showed up. Thank goodness because 2022 marked the largest AGJA Junior National event on record with 199 exhibitors and 330+ head in the barn with nearly one third of those being bred & owned! I hope those who joined us this year for your first year, your final year, or somewhere in between take a moment to reflect on the impact you have on me as your junior coordinator. Whether it was a quick “Morning” before the sun came up, a high five in the makeup area or a quick smile in the barns, I hope each of you know how much energy I draw from YOU in those little moments! To those joining our family in the teal jackets I hope you believe in yourselves as much as the membership that looks upon you now does. I hope you see in yourself the potential to make a positive impact on not only the breed or the association, but the memories created within the association. The bar has been set high but, trust me, it is not unreachable. We have made great strides over the
past four years that I’ve been lucky enough to serve as your AGA Junior Coordinator. I truly believe the best is yet to come. So buckle up, prepare to have the time of your life, sprinkled with a few moments of doubt and hardship but always ending with the satisfaction that you have left your legacy on the members of this association and the breed. I look forward to the next two years with you. I have seen your peers that came before you make remarkable discoveries, life changing memories and rise to the occasion time and time again. There is nothing “small” or “minute” about your time with the AGJA. It is my job to ensure that you are provided with the most profitable, inclusive, and educational atmosphere possible. To guide you and your membership on your journey toward the next chapter of your life; whatever that may look like. As the AGJA embarks on the newly approved five-year strategic plan (20232027) my hope is that the membership recognizes the talent, forethought, precision and professionalism that went into the hours of conversation had among the 10-member board of the AGJA. The vision of the AGJA is to cultivate an environment that develops unified and educated leaders to become the best versions of themselves in the pursuit of their AUGUST

passions. In doing so, the AGJA will continue to collaborate with industry and association stakeholders. With a focus on the future, the importance of building upon already established relationships while opening the doors for new ventures and affiliations shone light on the five key areas that the AGJA will target over the next five years under the direction of the AGJA board of directors. Outreach: proactively encouraging interaction between past, present and potential members along with industry stakeholders. We hope to accomplish this through member-to-member interaction and continuing to provide a collaborative and inclusive environment for all members and enthusiasts of the beef industry. Outlook: to remain relevant within the beef industry as a junior association. The AGJA continues to grow each year. We plan to encourage youth to seek new and existing opportunities within the beef industry both related to and outside of the Gelbvieh breed. Education: provide the necessary resources for members to expand their knowledge of available opportunities
for success in their future endeavors. By instilling grace in their abilities and the skills learned through raising Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle, we hope to build confidence in the application of their skills towards seeking scholarships, internships, professional development opportunities and resource collection toward the career path of their choice. Leadership: to cultivate a generation of junior members that are excited about stepping into leadership positions. By facilitating interaction between AGJA directors, and the membership, along with those of the AGA and American Gelbvieh Foundation, we hope to create a platform that fosters and recognizes the talent within our membership, the future of the breed. Involvement: to inform and encourage participation of membership through favorable industry events. We hope to inspire members to experience new challenges and seek their own definition of success along with introducing them to opportunities for collaboration with youth outside of the association.
Thank you each person, family, organization, sponsor, and team that continues to support these kids year after year. I will continue to not only work for you, but with you, to navigate the future of the AGJA through the countless opportunities that lie ahead. You will not find somebody more passionate about the future of this association, the youth that lie within it, and those to come than me. The future looks bright for this association and its membership, and it is truly an honor to be a small part of that journey. To the membership, I stand not before you or behind you, but beside you. With conviction, I vow to continue making this event and your experience with us one you talk about for years to come. We will continue to build strong leaders and advocates of the beef industry with each passing year. You have a faithful and humble team working diligently for you. F

ocial media. It’s a part of more than 90% of the U.S. population’s daily communication and connectedness, and with new platforms emerging, that number is expected to rise. The communication and outreach tools social platforms provide are invaluable, helping build global connections and allowing brands to casually reach targeted demographics through scrolling popup advertisement and subtle side-bar insertions. When was the last time you had a casual conversation with a friend and then opened Facebook to see an advertisement for the product or brand you were just visiting about? Your social feeds know what you like many times before you do. Social platforms also allow for another means of communication. Whether you’re using Messenger or WhatsApp, staying connected has never been easier. However, used irresponsibly, social media can haunt job opportunities, scaring off future employers and limiting your chances of finding a rewarding position. We’ve outlined a few do’s and don’ts below to help you get the most out of your social media experience.
In addition to emphasizing your leadership roles, the platform is also a great opportunity to practice your cover letter skills in the “about” section. Unlike other social platforms, this isn’t the place for emojis. Think about what you would like a future employer to know about you: your work ethic; your perseverance; your willingness to lend a helping hand; and your drive to succeed. This is the place to share your professional story – and if you’re receiving the Gelbvieh World magazine, you have a professional story. Your agriculture, on-farm background, helps put your resume closer to the top of the stack on a recruiter’s desk, whether you realize it or not. Leverage the experience you have gained on the farm and don’t be afraid to share it!
Have you googled your name? What pops up?
You’ll also want to find a good headshot for your photo. This doesn’t have to be a professional headshot, but shouldn’t be a “selfie”, either. This will be your first impression within the LinkedIn network you’ll build. You want it to be a good one!
1. Risque or racy content on your social media pages.
RESEARCH AND BEGIN BUILDING YOUR NETWORK.
Mentors are an invaluable part of every stage of life and depending on what field of study you intend to pursue; LinkedIn LINKEDIN, THE is a great place to begin honing-in on PROFESSIONAL the leaders within that industry. Don’t be PLATFORM In the United States, YouTube has become afraid to reach out, introduce yourself, and make the connection. the most popular social media platform with 85 percent of 13 to 17 year-olds Whether you’re applying for a job directly using it, 72% use Instagram, 69% use out of high school or applying for college, Snapchat, 51% use Facebook, and it’s you can bet that Google will be a first estimated that 69% of U.S. teens are stop for recruiters and having a wellmonthly TikTok users.* established LinkedIn profile is a great first LinkedIn doesn’t even rank. But are you missing out by not using this professional networking tool? The minimum age for a LinkedIn membership is 14 and many high school business classes are beginning to institute the use of LinkedIn within the curriculum to help students learn about career pathways, network and review job descriptions and opportunities.
step in the landing an interview.
HOW ARE YOU USING SOCIAL MEDIA? The most polished LinkedIn account ever created doesn’t off-set a poor presence on other social platforms. If social media is the first stop for a recruiter, will you be proud or ashamed of what they see on your social feeds?
In a recent CareerBuilder survey, recruiters named the top four areas they look at when vetting a candidate on social media: 1. Information that supports a candidate’s qualifications. 2. The professionalism of a candidate’s online persona. 3. What other people are posting about candidates. 4. A reason not to hire a candidate. Followed by the top five social media finds that exclude candidates from further consideration:
2. Offensive sentiments or images on your profile and/or extreme political or religious views. 3. Photos or discussion about illegal activities (even if in a joking manner). 4. Images and updates that reference a focus on partying and getting crazy. 5. Angry or argumentative comments and threads.
THE SOCIAL REVIEW The first thing to remember and think about before you hit publish on any post is that once it’s live, those photos and words exist forever. Opportunities have been lost and careers ruined by illthought-out social media posts. Take the time to review your social accounts, ask an adult or teacher to review your social media accounts with you and ensure that you’re putting your best foot forward when you hit send on those college, scholarship, internship and, ultimately, job applications. JUNIOR CONNECTION
AN EDUCATIONAL AND COMPETETIVE WEEK IN KASNAS by Jaycie Forbes, AGJA President
H
ot, humid and a humbling experience are a few words to describe the 2022 Crossroads Classic. Although, the weather was pretty tropical, the junior members heated up the competition in both the show ring and in the contests. This year we set a record with having 199 contestants and 330+ cattle in the barn. I want to extend a huge THANK YOU to the Kansas association for putting on a great show. I know that it is no easy task to put on a show of this caliber and they did an amazing job. I would also like to thank all our sponsors. Your continued support is appreciated, and it does not go unnoticed.
Members from across the United States and Canada competed in various contests that tested their knowledge on not only our breed but the beef industry as a whole. They also competed in sales talk, judging, team fitting and many other contests.
members. They always had the good of this association as their main focus. With big shoes to fill, we welcome newly elected board members: Isabel Lowe, Drew Stock and Gentry Warner. I look forward to their enthusiasm and perspective moving forward.
This year we said goodbye to our retiring board members: Alexx Starr, Karley Rumfelt and Cody Forbes. Not only were these three board members, but they are also fierce competitors, wonderful role models and best of all, friends. These three were a huge asset to our association and were a great example for us younger board
I hope to see you all July 2-7, 2023, for the Great Dakota Classic in Huron, South Dakota. I anticipate the competition to be just as competitive, but I am cautiously optimistic the weather will be much cooler. I sincerely expect the Great Dakota Classic to live up to its name and is a great experience for everyone. F

MISS AG W
hen Maci Wehri learned about Miss Agriculture USA on Instagram, the Mott, North Dakota, native knew that the opportunity would allow her to advocate and reconnect with the industry she loves.
My brother passed away when he was 19 from a farm-related sprayer accident; I was 10-years-old at the time, today I am 19. For me, if I can save someone else’s brother, son, grandchild, I think that’s a great way to honor my brother,” she says.
“Once I got to college, I kind of lost touch with agriculture because I wasn’t studying anything in agriculture,” the Englishliterature and communication major who aspires to a career in broadcasting shares, “So when I saw the post for Miss Agriculture USA, I immediately jumped on it.”
In addition to sharing the important message of farm safety, Maci will also have the opportunity to advocate for agriculture, hone her public speaking skills and meet many different people from around the country.
The 19-year-old daughter of Dean and Kristi Wehri of Mott, North Dakota and the granddaughter of Harvey and Carol Wehri of Hebron, North Dakota. and Doug and Judy Martin of Dickinson, North Dakota, Maci is no stranger to agriculture and the cattle industry. Maci’s grandpa, Harvey started Wehri Gelbvieh in 1984 and continues today under the operation of Maci’s dad and uncle with the help of Maci and her cousins. “The ranch has been passed down through the generations and I’m the third generation – seven years ago started the fourth generation with grandpa’s great grandchildren. We aren’t a large operation, but we’re all so proud of the cattle we run,” she says, adding that the family sells around 50 registered Gelbvieh bulls every year. After winning the North Dakota title, Maci, with the help of a generous sponsorship from the North Dakota Stockman’s Association, went on to complete in Ohio, June 16-19, to bring the national title home to North Dakota. Throughout the remainder of 2022, Maci will travel the countryside to speak about a topic that is very near to her heart. “I’m going to talk to as many people as I can about farm safety and really work to get the message out there because I truly believe that if we talk about it more, then we can cut down on the farm safety-related accidents. We need to be talking about prevention.

Tony Hayek Memorial Award Presented in Salina by Tina Cibula, daughter of Tony Hayek
T
he Tony Hayek Memorial was established 20 years ago. Tony loved cattle, kids, and having a good time. Junior Nationals was his family vacation nearly every year. Tony’s children Tina, Stan, Shellina, and Janelle were all active in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. Three of the four have chosen to continue with their own herds (Cib’s Gelbvieh, Herink Gelbvieh, and Taubenhiem Gelbvieh). Tony’s influence in the breed lives on through his kids and grandkids as they participate in many shows and other Gelbvieh activities.
and owned division takes that skill to a much higher level. It is for that reason the bred and owned show was always one of his favorites. Congratulations Madalyn Johnson of Judsonia, Arkansas, on achieving the Champion Bred and Owned Gelbvieh Female honor. Tony would be very proud of your dedication to breeding outstanding Gelbvieh genetics.
Tony was passionate about Gelbvieh cattle and knew the breed’s future was in the hands of the younger generations. He found great joy in teaching the youth about the Gelbvieh breed and helping them with their livestock projects. He loved watching his kids exhibit cattle, but he always wanted them to understand the skills that are needed outside of the show ring to breed quality cattle. Showing cattle takes a great deal of skill, but competing in the bred

ongratulations to Madalyn Johnson of Judsonia, Arkansas, daughter of Jason of Rebecca Johnson, for being chosen to represent the American Gelbvieh Junior Association and Ambassador for the 2022-2023 year. A seven-year member of the AGJA, Johnson is a freshman at White County Central in Judsonia, Arkansas. In addition to her new role as AGJA Ambassador, she is actively involved in 4-H, FFA, Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association, Natural State Show Goat Association and Mt. Pleasant MBC Youth Group. When not working with her calves, Madalyn enjoys encouraging others through leadership roles in her 4-H Club, participating in the White County Skill-a-thon and Livestock Judging Team and helping with community service projects through her involvement with the Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Team. A well-spoken young cattlewomen, Johnson has soared to the top earning multiple public speaking, sales talk and essay contest over the years.

“Since joining the AGJA I have learned how hard work and dedication can help you in and out of the show ring. In doing the leadership contests, I have learned skills that will help me throughout life. From public speaking, to knowing about EPDs, I know that I will use these skills in the future. Going to all the Junior Classic shows has affected me in the best way possible. I have learned about hard work and leadership. By looking up to others in the breed, I have learned how to be competitive while still being friendly. I feel it is my job to go and spread the word about the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed and I plan to continue my life promoting such an incredible breed who has given me so much.” Johnson said. The AGJA created the Ambassador program to encourage and support youth development in the breed’s activities. The ambassador will represent the AGJA at Gelbvieh functions throughout the year, including shows at the local, regional, state and national level. We wish Madalyn the best of luck in her new role as the 2022-2023 AGJA Ambassador.

or the seventh year, special awards were presented to supporters of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) for their impact on the association and its members. DeGeer Gelbvieh of Erie, Kansas, was recognized as an Honorary Friend of the AGJA at the 2022 AGJA Crossroads Classic awards banquet, which was held on Friday, July 8, 2022 in Salina, Kansas. This year we would like to honor Jim and Terri DeGeer, along with their family, from DeGeer Gelbvieh as the 2022 Honorary
Friends of the AGJA. Thank you to the DeGeer family for your support of the AGJA over the years. It is greatly appreciated and has not gone unnoticed. DeGeer’s were instrumental in the establishment and organization of the Kansas Gelbvieh Junior Association in its inception along with instilling a passion and understanding for the Gelbvieh breed in juniors across the state. The DeGeer family has served as a mentor to many and role model of what it means to educate others about the Gelbvieh breed over the years.

Creative Writing Winners Each year, AGJA members are offered the opportunity to compete in a creative writing contest to showcase both their writing skills and passion for the beef industry. The winners of this contest are published in this issue to highlight both their writing skills and subject knowledge. Senior division writers were asked to dive into the topic of “Sustainability” – a word that is being talked about in every industry, including the beef sector. We asked our AGJA seniors to tell us how they define sustainability and how the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed exhibits sustainability. Intermediate division shared and highlighted the opportunities that they have had during their time in AGJA that have helped them to develop as leaders themselves. We asked our intermediate members to be specific and share
exapmles of how they have used those leadership skills both in AGJA and in their personal/school life. Junior division writers told us about their first Gelbvieh show experience, including the animal that they showed, where the show was located and what they learned from the show that inspired them to join AGJA and continue showing cattle.
by Lilly Weber, Lamar, Missouri Senior Division Champion Sustainability is a buzzword that seems to be affecting all areas of our lives. Environmental, economic, and social aspects all play a part in sustainability. To me it is something that we all want in our lives whether that would be with our job, family, or our cow herd. We all want to maintain a level of satisfaction, and we want to maintain it for a long time. We also want to be great and we all have something that we bring to the table. Sustainability is also finding that perfect balance in whatever you are doing in all areas. Sustainability is a word we hear often now in conversations regarding agricultural items.. It’s in every industry, including the agriculture industry from equipment to the livestock it touches all. Many use it when talking about their cow herds. When we are talking about our herd we are not just talking about the herd in the pasture, we are talking about the future of the herd as well. Where is the herd going and what is the end goal? We often are trying to improve and find more efficient ways to help our herd. People can do this with new technology, feed rations, and genetics. Ranchers are not always just looking at their herd today, but are often looking at the bigger picture. What will their herd look like in five years or even ten years? They are looking at how we can get more, whether this is to have higher quality meat or more productivity in the cows, the rancher is wanting to get the most with a high level of sustainability.
The Gelbvieh breed has sustainability. There are many things within the breed that show the Gelbvieh breed will maintain a level of satisfaction and continue to make improvements over the years. The Gelbvieh cow is known for her maternal traits, which allows them to produce bigger offspring that in the end, will provide more growth and product in each calf at weaning. Docile is a word that many of us like to see associated with cattle and it is associated with the Gelbvieh cow. It makes working and handling the cattle go a lot smoother and calmer. Another trait that the Gelbvieh breed offers is muscling. This is one of the many reasons that we have seen ranchers with different breeds of cattle start to cross with the Gelbvieh. This leads to them seeing more pounds on their calves and in return getting them more money at the local sale barn. These cattle also have great feed efficiency, which is helpful when feeding cattle. Less input expense results in more return in the end. One more trait that is often overlooked with the Gelbvieh breed is their coat. The fine hair and skin with strong pigmentation helps them to quickly adapt to warm or cold weather. While these traits are helpful to many producers, more importantly they are all great reasons to choose the Gelbvieh breed. When I think long term, I think of what I want my life to be like in the future and yes the Gelbvieh breed is in it. The reason why I think I will see Gelbvieh cattle is because people AUGUST

do business with people from within as well as outside of this breed when working to take their herd to higher levels. The Gelbvieh breed is full of wonderful people. The social side of sustainability comes into play here. In my short 17 years of life, I have met so many friends along the way. This is a part of attending purebred sales, Jr. Nationals, and even National shows such as the NWSS or Cattleman’s Congress.. The Gelbvieh breed can be economically sustainable with it being a business breed. Within this breed of cattle are people that work hard and produce the highest quality they are able to. Those are the kind of people that I want to do business with and I know that other farmers and ranchers will feel the same way because every breed has something to offer. Our breed not only has good traits within the cattle, but this breed is full of great friends and family. These ranchers are also concerned about the environment that they are raising their cattle in. This part of sustainability
does not get overlooked. Ranchers and farmers work daily to help with erosion and care of the land. They also use such methods as rotational grazing to help the land and grass. That passion that I see and hard work that people put into our environment is also carried over into the care they have for the Gelbvieh breed and the many herds that make up this. This sustainability is what will help set our breed apart from other breeds. These traits are the reason that our breed is sustainable and is going strong. Our Gelbvieh breed has traits that many breeders need and are using to cross with other breeds. The people in the Gelbvieh breed are always working hard and trying to make it better, while still caring about the safety of the herd and others around them. As I continue to grow my herd along with my family, I will continue to reach for sustainability in my life and in my cattle. F
by Kate Strackeljahn, St. James, Missouri Intermediate Division Champion The leaders in my life don’t always have the title that would make them a leader. They are a leader because they care, they guide, and they show me how to put one foot in front of the other. A leader guides by example, exhibiting the traits for a good leader, being kind, strong, brave, loyal, smart, bold, honest, patient, and resilient. Through example, a leader teaches the steps to rebuild after the storm big or small, win or lose. The AGJA works hard to build strong leaders to carry on the legacy of our organization. I’ve watched and learned from directors and mentors that have shown me what it means to embrace the traits that embody a good leader. I’ve been fortunate to experience these leaders behind the scenes as the AGJA ambassador. I’ve got to grow my leadership skills with some of the best. At the 2021 Junior Nationals, I was paired with Sadie to be my mentor, she encouraged me and checked up on me during junior nationals. Then I got to watch her and other directors lead by example, showing me through their actions and their help at Cattlemen’s Congress what it means to be a leader. They showed me that a true leader doesn’t just tell you what to do, they jump in and do it with you. Cattlemen’s Congress was one of my favorite experiences. I watched exhibitors show strong leadership by

winning with humility and losing with dignity. I watched exhibitors congratulate others when they wanted that win more than anything. One of the most humbling experiences at Cattlemen’s Congress was the pen show. I watched groups of cattle come and go, I watched the families that had worked hard to grow these calves. I listened and learned from the judge - growing my leadership skills. This experience reminded me of a quote I once heard that said “never allow success to cloud your judgment; never allow defeat to cloud your emotions”. When I leave these events, I bring home with me knowledge. I have been given the opportunity to share this knowledge. I have embraced the opportunity to grow my leadership skills by helping younger youth with their 4-H projects. I get to spend time with young exhibitors and their bucket calves. I get to guide them, be their mentor, and be someone they can turn to and ask questions. I spend time with them, teaching them about their calf. One little boy has become one of my favorites. He is 6 years old, he used to be very shy. When he would come to 4-H he would barely talk to anyone. In the last year, he has opened up and talks to me at every meeting. I ask him about his bottle calf, Katherine, and he tells me
how she likes to chase him around the yard. At one 4-H meeting, he pulled me aside and asked me to come visit his bottle calf. I had a lot going on at school, but I wanted to grant this little man this request. So I worked with my mom and we scheduled a day to go see him and his bottle calf. I had so much fun that afternoon, she had gotten out of her pen, so we had to go get her from the yard. She chased us back to the house. Then I showed him how to work with the halter and comb her hair. I shared some tips about what not to do. Then, we played baseball. I don’t necessarily like baseball, but he asked me to play. To me this is being a leader. You take the time to get to know those you lead. You spend time learning and playing together. If I had just spent time with him and Katherine (the calf), it would have still been a great day, but we made it an amazing day by doing so much more together. I’ve learned that an inspirational leader is calm under pressure, is disciplined, shows their good and bad sides but is strong
enough to say I’m sorry, listens, is resilient, shows integrity and develops others. I’ve gotten the amazing opportunity to grow my leadership skills in the past year by being the AGJA ambassador. I’ve gotten to take what I learned and develop these traits even more in myself by leading a group of clover kids with their bucket calves. F
by Kylie Sickler, Gladstone, North Dakota Junior Division Champion I first learned about showing Gelbvieh cattle from my dad. It’s been a family tradition for four generations. My first Gelbvieh show was at the 4-H achievement days. I showed a Gelbvieh heifer named Betty. Before the day of the show there was a lot of work to do to prepare for it. When Betty was just a calf, we already had our eyes on her Throughout the summer, we kept looking at how she was developing and maturing. She continued to get better as she got older, and when it was time to wean calves, we decided that she was going to be my show heifer for that year. After we brought Betty in, we started working right away. We spent multiple days a week on halter breaking so that I would be able to lead her with ease. Training Betty’s hair was another task we worked on often. We would wash and dry her because we needed to train her hair to go in a certain direction. I learned to brush her hair forward with a scotch comb. I would also spray Revive in her hair to help moisturize it.
unload Betty. Lastly, we parked the trailer and started getting ready for the show. When it was my turn to show I was extremely nervous, but I was also excited. I knew that if I stayed calm Betty would too. As I walked into the ring, I was calm and confident. I focused on setting her up and watching the judge. We were close to the end of the show and the judge lined us up for our placings. I was nervous, but I ended up being reserve champion! After showing Betty, I realized that I loved it so much that I did not want to stop. Through the preparation and hard work, I learned how to be dedicated by consistently feeding Betty and taking the time to work with her. I also learned how to be persistent especially when learning to show was a challenge. I enjoy carrying on the family tradition of showing Gelbvieh cattle. It has helped me see that at the end of the day it doesn’t matter if you win or lose as long as you work hard and have fun. F
To help Betty mature and develop, we fed her a certain kind of show feed called Woody’s. It helped her grow by providing her with food that has good nutrients. I went outside every morning when I woke up to feed her, and I fed her again later in the day towards the evening. Finally, the day of the show came. That morning we had to get up early to get ready. First, we had to make sure we had what we needed for the show in our trailer. Then we loaded Betty into the trailer and drove to town. Next, we found an empty pen to AUGUST

Currently in our herd, there are 88 female descendants of 337M. This TJB ANISSA 337M heavy influence is no accident. They continue to do all the right things! The next opportunity to add the influence of this influential family comes on November 5th at our Annual Bull Sale. 16 of our 60 bulls selling will be from this dominant lineage.
