Judd Ranch Gives You More
When you see a Judd Ranch female or bull, it’s their eye appeal that draws the first comment. Then, as you study each animal, you notice their functional and convenience traits. And when you read their pedigrees and performance figures, it becomes obvious that Judd Ranch animals give you more—and why Judd Ranch was honored as the No. 1 owner and breeder of AGA Dams of Merit, Dams of Distinction for 21 of the past 26 years, 1998-2023. If you’re needing a strong herdsire, breed-defining females or embryos featuring the top genetics in the breed, give us a call and let’s discuss your needs. Please save these dates: October 12, second Saturday in October, Judd Ranch 34th Annual Cow Power Female Sale, and March 1, first Saturday in March, Judd Ranch 47th Gelbvieh, Balancer® and Red Angus Bull Sale.

TFROM THE CORNER OFFICE
A WEEK OUT WEST IN WOODWARD
by Harold Bertz, Executive Director
he dust is settling on an outstanding 2024 American Gelbvieh Junior Association, “Way Out West Classic” held in Woodward, Oklahoma, June 30-July 5. Hopefully everyone has caught up on chores missed and sleep lost while attending the classic. Guaranteed is that the positive energy and enthusiasm has not waned. I left Woodward, Oklahoma, excited, recharged and eager for the future of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle and the American Gelbvieh Association!
Congratulations to everyone involved in putting on this stellar event. No event of this magnitude occurs without an army of dedicated volunteers willing to share their time, talents and resources. Tawnie DeJong and the AGJA Junior Board did an amazing job of creating an environment for our junior members to compete, collaborate and develop friendships and skills for a lifetime surrounded by a support network of parents and Gelbvieh breeders. Hats off to our hosts the Gelbvieh Association of Oklahoma and the crew at the Woodward County Event Center and Fairgrounds. Junior advisors Tom Vehige, Tana Cooper and Lori Maude were behind the scenes heroes that kept the show going. I would
also like to recognize a talented group of interns that worked hard. Ryan McDuffie, Baylee Brown, Lauren Crutsinger and Grant Stafford did an amazing job of making the classic a memorable event.
It is hard to put a value on the lessons learned by the 174 junior members from 19 states and their 300 Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle exhibited. With over 14 contests and events, junior members had the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills. I was amazed by the quality of their work and the number of juniors that participated in every event. The most rewarding thing for me was witnessing the friendships and camaraderie shared. From four-year-old Georgia from Alabama riding her scooter with her new friend Rhett from Kansas to the group of senior members who “aged out” and will continue their journey armed with the skills and experiences gained from time well spent as members of the AJGA.
The cattle were excellent but still so very functional and industry right. One quote during a championship drive by judge Mark Hoge really resonated with me. He remarked, “These cattle may be halter broke, clipped and fit different from the cattle back home, but their utility to the industry is the same, tremendous.”
What an outstanding compliment and endorsement to our breed and breeders! Our junior program continues to be a spotlight for AGA, congratulations to everyone involved!
Our next opportunity to shape the direction of the breed is at our 54th Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention December 4-6, 2024, at the Crowne Plaza Kansas City Downtown. Whether you are a longtime attendee, or this will be your first convention, I encourage you to attend and be a part of the decision-making process that charts our course as we begin a new chapter for AGA. Your voice is important in committee meetings, interactions and elections. The National Convention offers us an opportunity to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of our members, conduct business of the association and much like our junior classic, develop friendships that prosper far beyond convention and the AGA. Like so many things in life, you must be present to win! I look forward to seeing you down the road.F

AVIEW FROM THE BOARD THE HIGH ENERGY FUTURE OF GELBVIEH
by Lori Maude, AGA President
s I write this column, I am finding the top of my desk after being gone to the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Way Out West Classic in Woodward, Oklahoma. I love junior national week. It’s long hours and a lot of work, but it’s like a family reunion once a year complete with the crazy aunts and uncles.
My favorite part of the week is seeing how much the kids change from year to year. It’s not just the growth spurts that some of them have, but it is that growth in skills and personality. Watching young people set goals, work hard and sometimes meet their goal. It’s watching them understand why they fell short, what they can change and set a new goal. Life skills, that’s what our junior members are learning.
I have been around the junior programs long enough from when I was on staff to now as an AGA member and national junior advisor to be working with the second generation. Some of today’s parents were active juniors when I was on the Gelbvieh staff. Nope, I don’t feel old—I feel energized when I’m around
AGJA members. They are smart, they ask great questions, and they love their Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle.
We started our stint in Woodward with nice weather and ended it on Gelbvieh show day with nice weather. The inbetween was hot but frequent cattle rinsing kept the critters comfortable and maybe the people. The kids may have engaged in a rather large water fight one afternoon. The Northern Lights Junior Association brought several hundred water balloons with them to start the water war that then evolved into buckets and hoses. An impromptu fun way to end a day of showing.
It’s those unplanned fun moments that make junior national a week to remember. It’s the wild Uno games in the stalls, studying for quiz bowl with your friends from another state, meals shared together—those are the moments that build friendships that last a lifetime.
Events like the Way Out West Classic don’t happen without a lot of man power, fundraising, sweat and tears. Thank you to the Gelbvieh Association of Oklahoma
and the Oklahoma juniors for being such great hosts for the week. Thank you to every Gelbvieh member or company that sponsored a meal, an award or an event during the week. Thank you to Tawnie DeJong, the AGA junior coordinator for jumping in with both feet and learning the ropes fast. And to the AGJA board of directors for their time planning before junior national, the work during junior national and their continued leadership throughout the year.
Those junior Gelbvieh leaders in the teal jackets are the energy powering the future of the Gelbvieh breed. They aren’t afraid to try something new or throw an idea out to see if it sticks. Status quo isn’t good enough. I admire their style and hope that our adult members take a few notes. We should never be satisfied and always reach for more. That’s what moves all of us forward.
Make sure to mark your calendar for June 23-27, 2025 when we go to Lebanon, Tennessee, for the Grand Ole Classic. Trust me the energy is contagious.F

WWOW - OUR JUNIORS JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER
by Jaycie Forbes, AGJA President
OW! What a week at the 2024 Way Out West Classic in Woodward, Oklahoma. Junior members and their families traveled from all over the country to Woodward for a week full of activities. Each year it continues to amaze me to watch our talented juniors compete in all the contests and in the show ring.
The week started off early Sunday morning with contest and cattle checkin. This year we checked in 311 head of cattle along with 174 juniors from 19 states, making this the largest junior classic to date. We rolled right into opening ceremonies, where we were able to recognize our states in attendance, hear from the junior board, junior board candidates, Oklahoma host committee as well as our member and youth activities coordinator, Tawnie DeJong. We wrapped opening ceremonies with a fun activity called western scramble.
Vice President of Leadership and Development, Lily Judd, put on an excellent mentor/protégé program. This program pairs older members with younger or first-time members to provide them with guidance and advice throughout the week. Their weekly activity was to participate in a photo scavenger hunt where they would have daily tasks to find a person or an object and take a selfie.
Sunday wrapped up with the finalists of the Prepared Speaking contest delivering their speeches to judges and the Stock Show University “Ready, Set, Grow” daily hair clinic. Through this clinic, our junior members were able to hear from Stock Show University professors (that just so happened to be past junior members themselves). Zack Butler, Justin Teeter, and Kyle Vehige took the opportunity to
share their knowledge on daily hair care to current AGJA members.
Monday and Tuesday were filled with educational contests. Team Fitting, Quiz Bowl, Judging, Skill-a-thon, and Sales Talk all took place within those two days. By participating in these contests, members gain skills related to teamwork, communication, industry knowledge, and public speaking. It always amazes me how prepared our members are for these contests - all the way from the junior division to the senior division. The Gelbvieh breed has produced many beef industry leaders, and these contests were some of the first building blocks in their education.
We kicked off the Sullivan Supply, Inc. Showmanship contest right away Wednesday morning. Seniors, intermediates, juniors, peewees, and even our adults, all had the opportunity to showcase their ability to exhibit their animals. Congratulations to all of those who competed in this event. After the completion of showmanship, members attended our annual meeting to talk about association business. During the annual meeting the newly elected board candidates were announced. Congratulations to Teagan Butterfield, Braxton Murray, Isabel Lowe and Gentry Warner on being elected to the AGJA Board of Directors.
Thursday morning started off bright and early with the Balancer show day, judged by Jeff Jackson of Walnut Spring, Texas, and Friday began with the Gelbviehinfluenced Market Show and Gelbvieh shows judged by Dr. Mark Hoge of Good Hope, Illinois. The quality of cattle throughout both days was phenomenal. As breeders and exhibitors, we should take great pride in how far we have come as a breed.
ThankThank
Friday night was our annual awards banquet. Winners were announced in all contests, our auctions took place (which raised just over $18,000 for future junior programs), and junior board retirement speeches were delivered. We said goodbye to Preston Dunn and Drew Stock and thanked them for their years of service on the junior board. We also awarded the Honorary Friend of the AGJA to the Vehige family of T Bar S Cattle Company. The Vehiges have been a fixture of the Gelbvieh breed for a long time and are no stranger to this industry. We thank them for all the knowledge, help and guidance they have shed on the juniors in this association. The night ended with our dance and a last chance to connect with friends both old and new.
A huge thank you to the Oklahoma Gelbvieh Association for putting on a great week. It is no easy task to put on an event of this caliber and they did a great job. The countdown is on for the 2025 AGJA Grand Ole Gelbvieh Classic in Lebanon, Tennessee. I hope to see you all June 23-27, 2025. F

JUDD WINS TONY HAYEK
MEMORIAL AWARD
by TINA CIBULA ,
The Tony Hayek Memorial was established 20 years ago. Tony loved cattle, kids and having a good time. Junior Classic was his family vacation nearly every year. Tony’s children Tina, Stan, Shellina, and Janelle were all active in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. Three of the four have chosen to continue with their own herds (Cib’s Gelbvieh, Herink Gelbvieh, and Taubenheim Gelbvieh).
Tony’s influence in the breed lives on through his kids and grandkids as they participate in many shows and other Gelbvieh activities.
Tony was passionate about Gelbvieh cattle and knew the breed’s future was in the hands of the younger generations. He found great joy in teaching the youth about the Gelbvieh breed and helping them with their livestock projects. He
loved watching kids exhibit cattle, but he always wanted them to understand the skills that are needed outside of the show ring to breed quality cattle. Showing cattle takes a great deal of skill but competing in the bred and owned division takes that skill to a much higher level. It is for that reason that the bred and owned show was always one of his favorites.
Congratulations to Lacy Judd of Pomona, Kansas on achieving Champion Bred and Owned Gelbvieh Heifer honors. Tony would be very proud of your dedication to breeding outstanding Gelbvieh genetics.

CARROLL CHOSEN AS 2024-2025 AGJA AMBASSADOR
Congratulations to Sarah Carroll of Raymore, Missouri, daughter of Dr. Dan Carroll and Laura Sharp, for being selected as the 2024-2025 American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Ambassador.
Sarah is a 10-year member of the AGJA, a soon-to-be freshman at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kansas this fall majoring in Health Sciences and Agriculture Business and has been active in 4-H, student council, the Heart of American Gelbvieh Junior Association (HAGJA), and her family’s Gelbvieh cattle operation. Currently, she serves as Vice President of Youth Leadership and on the Bylaws Committee for the HAGJA.
When asked why she decided to apply for the AGJA Ambassador position, Carroll had this to say, “For years, the AGJA Ambassadors have honored tradition while pushing for promotion and progression for the Gelbvieh breed, as well as the junior organization. As the AGJA Ambassador, I would like to uphold the tradition of facilitating those opportunities for the next generation of juniors coming up.”
Candidates for the AGJA Ambassador go through a rigorous application process, including an application packet with an activities resume, Gelbvieh involvement and an interest essay, as well as an in-person interview process during Junior Classic
and presenting a speech during the Annual AGJA Meeting on the Wednesday of Junior Classic. A panel of judges evaluates all of these application pieces using a rubric, and Carroll was selected as the winner. We asked Sarah what she was most looking forward to for the upcoming year serving as AGJA Ambassador. “Over the next year as Ambassador, I promise to both promote the Gelbvieh breed and encourage juniors to maintain a progressive mindset as members and breeders. I look forward to working with juniors, promoting our genetics, and organizing a service project to begin a program to provide polos, banquet tickets, Sullivan’s gift cards, and more to AGJA members and families that my need a little extra help to make the trip to the 2025 AGJA Classic in Tennessee a little easier.”
The AGJA created the Ambassador program to encourage and support youth development in the breed’s activities. The Ambassador will represent the AGJA at Gelbvieh functions throughout the year, including shows at the local, regional, state and national levels. We wish Sarah the best of luck in her new role as the 2024-2025 AGJA Ambassador.
HONORARY FRIEND OF THE AGJA
Each year the American Gelbvieh Junior Association awards an Honorary Friend of the AGJA. The recipients of this award are families and individuals who go above and beyond to help the youth of our organization. This year’s recipient is a family that is no stranger to the Gelbvieh breed. The Vehige family of Billings, Missouri was recognized as the Honorary Friend of the AGJA at the 2024 AGJA Way Out West Classic awards banquet, which was held on Friday, July 5, 2024, in Woodward, Oklahoma.
Tom or Coach as most of us know him, has always been an advocate for juniors. Tom has worn many hats within the association. He is currently serving as one of our junior advisors, as well as serving as an AGA board member. Stacy is constantly making sure everyone is taken care of and treats all of us like her own. All three of Tom and Stacy’s kids grew up in this association, all serving on the AGJA junior board
of directors. Justin has always offered a helping hand, words of advice, or encouragement and has helped countless juniors learn how to fit, clip, and feed their projects. Kyle is always there with a friendly joke, is always the first to step up to help a junior member and knows just what to say in every situation – his wife Jera has been the perfect addition to their family. Last but certainly not least, Grace has been an example for all of this to follow. Grace served for three years as President for this organization. She led during a time of growth and change. The effects of her leadership are still being felt today. It is my great honor to award this year’s Friend of the AGJA to T Bar S Cattle Company - The Vehige Family.

CREATIVE WRITING WINNERS
Each year, AGJA members are offered the opportunity to compete in a creative writing contest to showcase both their writing skills and passion for the beef industry. The winners of this contest are published in this issue to highlight both their writing skills and subject knowledge.
Seniors were given the following prompt; The beef industry has a unique opportunity to rebuild the nation’s cowherd. As you think about this opportunity, how do you see the Gelbvieh breed increasing market share? Explain the benefits of utilizing Gelbvieh females to move the beef industry forward in every segment (commercial cow/ calf, seedstock, feedlots, packing plants, etc.).
SENIOR DIVISION CHAMPION
The Future of Beef: Unlocking the Benefits of Gelbvieh Across All Industry Segments
Jessie Lowe, Adrian, Mo
There is an opportunity in the beef industry to piece together your herd. Research shows that cattle numbers are at an all-time low. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, there are 28.2 million beef cows in the United States as of January 1, 2024, down two percent from last year. Producers want to choose a breed that ensures they will make a superior profit. Gelbvieh is guaranteed to add quality to any cattle herd throughout every segment of the beef industry. Gelbvieh cattle are the gateway to quality and efficiency.
Intermediates understand every producer has profound reasoning for choosing their breed of choice. Their essays answered: why did you choose Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle? How can you use your “why” to aid in marketing the breed to other producers?
Juniors were challenged to think back to the first time they showed a Gelbvieh or Balancer calf. Who was their calf? Why did they choose to show this one? They were to describe the show in detail (paint the picture) and tell what was learned from the experience.
Right now the beef industry stands at the edge of a unique opportunity to renovate the nation’s cowherd. The Gelbvieh breed is an essential piece to drive significant gains across all segments of the industry. From commercial cow/calf operations to seedstock, feedlots, and packing plants, the Gelbvieh breed offers a great number of benefits that can enhance productivity, profitability, and sustainability. By leveraging the built-in strengths of Gelbvieh females, the beef industry can not only increase its market share, but also secure a booming future for all stakeholders involved.
In the commercial cow/calf segment, Gelbvieh females offer maternal advantages through longevity, added fertility, and more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. These advantages provide support for herd performance and economic returns. These cows are knowingly
recognized for their maternal strengths that can help improve the cattle industry and the nation’s cowherd. Gelbvieh genetics lay out the basis for profitability which is what producers desire. Keep in mind these attributes are critical for commercial cow/calf operations aiming to maximize calf crop and minimize labor and costs.
Moving into the seedstock segment, when it comes to wanting to raise high-quality, performance-orientated cattle, Gelbvieh should be a breed to include within your herd. This breed offers genetic diversity and higher-ranking performance traits that can boost the quality of breeding programs. Gelbvieh females are strong in fertility and longevity which will translate to increased reproductive efficiency in seedstock operations. This helps reduce replacement rates, leading to lower input costs and higher overall productivity.
All seedstock producers want to be able to compete in the beef industry, they want to be known around the nation for having the most efficient herd which will bring in more customers. Gelbvieh has proven to be the key to accomplishing this goal for many herd owners. Gelbvieh bulls are known for their growth performance, carcass quality, and feed efficiency, these traits are highly desired in today’s competitive market. Gelbvieh bulls can enhance the genetics of producer’s cows, which would offer superior breeding stock to commercial producers. This will not only nourish the reputation of the seedstock operation but also help the overall improvement of the nation’s cowherd.
When it comes to the feedlot segment of the cattle industry, producers will be happy to see that Gelbvieh-influenced cattle stand out from the rest because of their feedlot efficiency, rapid growth, excellent

muscling, and marketability. They display wonderful feed efficiency and higher average daily gain which are desired factors to ensure profitability.
Gelbvieh cattle maintain a special ability to convert feed into muscle mass efficiently, which happens to bring higher average daily gains and reduced feed costs. This all translates into more pounds of beef produced per unit of feed, enhancing the economic viability of feedlot operations.
Additionally, Gelbvieh cattle exhibit desirable carcass traits, such as highquality marbling and favorable yield grades. According to an Progressive Cattle website article, “Gelbvieh-influenced cattle provide added carcass weight. At the end of the day, they were still paid in pounds. They also add rib-eye, more gaining ability, and feed efficiency. All highly valuable things.” These features are key for meeting consumer demand for premium beef products and for achieving higher carcass values. The breed’s ability to produce lean, well-muscled carcasses without sacrificing marbling ensures that feedlot operators can deliver a steady, high-quality product to the market.
At the packing plant level, we know Gelbvieh performs well at the feedyard but they also carry grade and value onto the rail. The benefits of using Gelbvieh cattle become more clear. The breed’s superior carcass traits develop an increase in yield and improved meat quality, which are desired factors for profitability in the packing industry. According to the
INTERMEDIATE DIVISION CHAMPION
Clara Bishop, Coxs Creek, Ky.
Growing up, I’ve always loved summer. From hours upon hours spent in the swimming pool to the endless amounts of popsicles consumed to the long and fun county fair beef shows, it’s definitely an exciting time of year. In 2023, right before show season started, we received a call from some people we knew at the time who were interested in our show string for the year. We told them we didn’t have a solid plan together yet, but that we’d get back to them. Two months later, I was in a vehicle en route to Kendallville, Indiana, and my life was about to be changed forever.
We got to our final destination after six tiring hours in the truck- and it was twenty degrees. We introduced ourselves and walked through some pens of cattle until our eyes landed on a November Balancer heifer. After receiving some information about her, we made a deal and made our way back home to get the trailer. And the next thing I know, I was at
U.S. Meat Animal Research Center progress report #22, Gelbvieh ranks number one for percent retail products.
Furthermore, the consistent quality of Gelbvieh carcasses strengthens the reputation of packing plants that source from Gelbvieh-influenced herds. This stability helps meet the firm requirements of both domestic and international markets, placing packing plants as reliable suppliers of premium beef products. As consumer needs continue to evolve toward high-quality, sustainability-produced beef, the Gelbvieh breed’s qualities line up perfectly with market demands.
With gathering all the information on why Gelbvieh is certain to help rebuild the nation’s cowherd along with its strengths, it becomes obvious that the Gelbvieh breed brings a unique and valuable opportunity to rebuild and advance the beef industry across all segments. Gelbvieh cattle offer a large number of benefits that boost productivity, profitability, and sustainability.
As the beef industry moves forward, supporting the Gelbvieh breed can lead to remarkable improvements in herd performance, economic returns, and market share. The Gelbvieh breed stands ready to play a vital role in shaping the future of the beef industry, driving progress, and ensuring long-term success for all the producers involved.
the Kentucky Gelbvieh Junior Association State Show with a purebred Gelbvieh and a Balancer heifer, walking through the show ring and having the time of my life.
Now, this story may seem like a basic tale to some of you, but it certainly wasn’t for me. The only breed I’d ever shown was Angus, and boy, were they different. I quickly realized that the Gelbvieh breed’s family is so much more closely knit than any other I’d been a part of. The shows aren’t full of drama and hatred for each other- instead, they’re always like a safe place where juniors and showmen can let their guard down (but never in the ring, of course…) and be a vital part of the organization.
As far as the breed itself runs, I couldn’t brag more on the quality and features of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. The calves are fast-growing, heavy muscled, big hipped, and fierce, and they’re very even-tempered. When looking from the show side, we can see how the smaller shows aren’t near as competitive as the large-scale shows, which still aren’t cutthroat like the Angus shows tend to be. The environment is always fun and welcoming, and everyone feels as if they truly have a purpose there.
West Classic
The breed from any angle is a heartfelt, beneficial, and impactful part of my life, and I love being able to share that story with others.
There are several ways to use my story as a marketing tool for the breed. Just about every producer wants to know what the breed associations are like- myself included. Nobody wants to be on the phone for hours trying to get one question answered. And as far as drama goes, no producer wants to be wrapped up in arguments and fights between breeders about some of the smallest issues. With Gelbviehs and Balancers, we don’t see those problems very often.
From a production standpoint, the breed is even more attractive. When crossed with Angus or Red Angus cattle, Gelbviehs can be an even more powerful breeding tool on anyone’s operation. I know they are on mine. We can credit hybrid vigor for that one.
I’ve never felt like I was truly at home at any cattle event before I went to Cattlemens Congress in January. Each person there made it their
JUNIOR DIVISION CHAMPION
Missy
Jett Baker, Stuart, Okla.
In 2021, my parents and I attended Cattleman’s Congress in Oklahoma City. I was only eight years old then but I was on the hunt for my first show heifer. We talked to quite a few breeders of several different breeds and didn’t know which breed we wanted until we found our way into barn 9. In this barn we found not only the quality of cattle we were looking for but we also found the best people in the industry! Many of those folks have become like family.
They directed us to the National Gelbvieh Sale and introduced us to some of the consignors. Dad and I walked through the cattle and I quickly spotted the one I wanted…a big, fleshly yearling heifer. When she came through the ring, I begged Dad. I told him “she’s the one!”. Thankfully, he was easy to convince and he got her bought. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to lead her around and bring her home.
When I got her home, I named her Missy and worked with her every day until I finally got to show her at my county fair in September. I was nervous since it was my first show but Dad and my ag teacher, who are both always there to help me, made sure I was prepared and calm before
personal mission to talk to me and learn my name. Several of the AGJA members I met there talk to me every day. I stress the idea of family a lot, but I mean it. If you don’t feel at home in an association, you shouldn’t stick around. The breed has allowed me to be the true version of myself wherever I am, because I know I’ll still be welcomed. Each event is fun and well thought out, and it makes time spent with “my people” even better. I can’t believe I’ve already been in the breed for a year. Ever heard the quote “time flies when you’re having fun”? Well, it’s true. The association brought me in with strong arms and a warm welcome, and I’ll forever be grateful.
I truly cannot wait to continue to embark on my journey in the Gelbvieh breed, because I know my time here just started. After all, I’m only fifteen. No matter where I am, who I’m with, or what I’ve done with my life, I know I’ll be a forever advocate for the breed- because my #1 goal is to make any new junior feel the same way I do- at home.
walking into the ring. I was ready! I had been waiting on this day for months. Missy looked good and I was confident. We stepped through the gate and I knew I’d found my new favorite thing to do. We walked in, made our lap around the ring and she nailed the set-up. The months of work paid off. We were selected as Breed Champion and brought home a banner at our very first show! I was so happy, I don’t think Missy really cared though. I gave her an extra scoop of the good feed that night.
In 2022, Missy raised a bull calf that I broke by myself. I took him to the Tulsa State Fair and won Grand Champion Gelbvieh Bull as well as Premier Exhibitor. I am exhibiting another bull calf out of Missy this year at Junior Nationals and look forward to hauling and promoting him for the rest of 2024. Missy is due to calve soon and I can’t wait to see what she has. Missy will always be my favorite show calf and now my favorite cow. That day in Oklahoma City, we found a very special animal as well as a very special group of people. I look forward to what Missy and I accomplish in years to come.

My First Junior National
by RYAN MCDUFFIE , AGA Intern
Picture this, a guy who has never been to a junior national before gets an internship where junior nationals is the end all be all. I would say it was a transformative experience. It really opened my eyes to the intricacies of cattle management, camaraderie, event planning and the thrill of competition.
From the moment I arrived at the event center, I was immersed in a whirlwind of activity and enthusiasm. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as participants from nineteen different states prepared for the long but fun week at the 2024 AGJA Way Out West Classic. As the summer intern, my role ranged from check in to coordinating logistics and providing my support wherever it was needed.
Throughout the event, I had the privilege to work alongside industry professionals and mentors who generously shared their knowledge and expertise. I truly deepened my understanding and the significance of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeds.
Beyond the practical skills, this internship provided me with a unique
vantage point to observe the dynamics of the show ring. Watching the interactions between the exhibitors and their cattle revealed a profound bond built on trust and mutual respect. I am glad that I was able to witness the dedication and passion that drives these young people to excel in life and in the show ring.
Of course, navigating through Junior Nationals presented its own set of challenges. From adhering to schedules to adapting to unforeseen circumstances, each obstacle became an opportunity to learn and grow. I developed resilience and resourcefulness, traits that proved invaluable in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
As we moved on to the award ceremony, I felt a swell of pride for the exhibitors whose hard work and dedication had brought them to this moment. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as prizes were given and champions were recognized, each accolade a testament to their preparation and determination.
Reflecting on my experience at the junior classic, I am grateful for the opportunities it provided and the lessons it imparted.
It reinforced my passion for the show industry, the success of the exhibitors, and deepened my appreciation for the dedication of those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the success of such events.
Looking ahead, I will carry with me the skills and insights that I have gained from this experience – the importance of teamwork, the value of mentorship, and the joy of working with the youth. These lessons will undoubtedly shape my future endeavors as I continue to pursue my passions in life.
In conclusion, this internship and the junior classic were more than just a learning experience; it was a journey of discovery, growth, and camaraderie. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of hard work and dedication, and it instilled in me a deep respect for the traditions and values that define this way of life.
As I reflect on my time at the junior classic, I am reminded that I will never get to live it down that I spelled Nebraska wrong on the banquet PowerPoint.F
