C-Bar Red Angus 2011

Page 1

Welcome to C-Bar Red Angus Welcome to all our friends and fellow cattlemen. The first thing I would like to emphasize is that this is not a going out of business sale but instead is a staying in business sale. As many of you know our program is built on Embryo Transfer. This last spring we decided to commit a larger portion of our resources to expanding our commercial cow herd in able to increase the number of ET calves we could produce. We normally pasture graze year-round and the drought has left us without winter pasture. Combine that with the extremely high cost of hay because of the wide spread drought and we have a double whammy that is more than our reserves can handle. We live from the proceeds of our cowherd, the survival of our program is dependent on its ability to be profitable and provide for itself and our family’s needs. We must reduce to only the essentials to cut costs and provide funds for survival. As of present we have enough feed to make it through the winter keeping our receipt cows and develop our bulls. The decision to sell so much of our foundation has been very difficult. I am confident that our foundation is solid and has provided what is needed for a bright future for C-Bar Ranch. A healthy 2012 calf crop is on its way and embryos in our tank will be sufficient for 2013’s calf crop. Again, this is not a going out of business sale but a staying in business sale. We aren’t selling worn-out discards; these cows will only gain in value over the next couple of years as we promote them through their offspring here at C-Bar. The bulk of these young cows’ production should still be ahead of them – the oldest female in the offering won’t be six until next Spring. If you look at the average age of the cows, it is four years old. Think about the result of the very last egg from Abigrace L7730, we used this to make Anticipation. Certainly our best achievement to date! We have placed three bulls in two separate studs in the last year alone: Anticipation with Genex, Contour and Powerball with Accelerated. Many donors will be gaining value soon as many of their sons will surely garner attention in our Spring 2012 Bull Sale. Many of the donor cows we own in partnership with Spring Water Red Angus (Mark and Sheryl Hettervig) from Oregon. For those who don’t know him, Mark is a close friend and hunting buddy of mine. He has been very gracious and understanding of our current needs and is allowing us to sell our partnership females in their entirety. I’m sure we will have the opportunity to chase some new dreams in the future. I could go into great detail about all the individual animals in the sale as I have spent a lifetime making them. Instead, I will offer to go over them in detail with anyone wanting to know more – just give me a call. The current state of our economy, our weather and the future of the cattle industry has me constantly telling myself three words, “Survive then Thrive”. If you have resources of capital and feed, what a great time to be investing! Keep priorities in line, God and Family First Thanks for your consideration, Steve and Cynthia As we are writing this letter our friends from Texas to Nebraska have reported rain from ½” to 5 ½”…………

COW

The Story: C Bar raised 602 and was the first calf born out of the C-Bar and Brown donor female and was the first calf born out of 7905. She was born early (2 weeks early) and she was small. 601 was nursing and running around before we knew what was going on. At weaning she was soft made and very attractive and was adequate but not extreme in her performance and was stronger on the ribeye during the scan. Renowned cattle expert, Lorna Marshall saw her out of the heifer crop just past a year of age and state, “show me a bull like that, that is what I want”.

P7905 was the top selling female in the RAB sale in 2007. When 602 was a bred heifer RAB and C Bar made the “trade”, 7905 and 7947. C Bar traded 1/3 interest in 7905 and 7945 to Ken Marquis and RAB for 100% interest in 602. It was a really risky move, because at the time she was the best Abigrace daughter. By making the trade this made 602 a franchise female for the C Bar program. Why? She was the best combination of genetics. 602 was the best choice to move C Bar’s program forward. To this date, she has excelled in all of those characteristics. She has been flushed to Conquest, Mulberry, Norseman King, Jackhammer and Nebula -- across the board she has done exactly what we wanted her to do with these sires. She has been flushed 11 times and has averaged 8.5 embryos per flush.

She had the heifer that was the high seller in our very first sale 2009, a May Nebula daughter, C-Bar Abigrace W9128 sold to Chelsea King of Oklahoma for $4,800. King won Oklahoma Junior Livestock Show with this great female. In 2010 three Norseman King daughters averaged over $4,000 to Mann Ranch, Solution Genetics and Ray Dowd. In 2010 a daughter, C-Bar Abigrace C39, sold to Kole Berke of Nebraska. This Mulberry female has dominated the tanbark. Her ticket was $4,000 and what an impact she has made. 2011’s sale started off with a bang when her three Conquest sons were the leadoff bulls. Overmiller Red Angus of Smith Center, KS teamed up with Accelerated Genetics to buy a 2/3 interest in C-Bar Contour 107X for $13,000. The other two sons brought $5,400 and $5,200. Dale Hiker of Kansas stepped up on the 103X and 101X went to Resting Heart Cattle Company of Stapleton, Nebraska. Her two Mulberry sons went to commercial online buyers that loved them when we delivered them! We will only be keeping six heifer calves from this year’s calf crop for the continuation of our program. A Jackhammer heifer and her full sisters, Y35 and Y38 sell as Lots 3 and 4. Three Jackhammer bull calves will undoubtedly be the featured lots in our Spring 2012 Bull Sale. Why are we selling her? This is a partnership female and the drought deals us some very hard cards. This is a franchise female with proven performance both on the flush and natural sides. Build better cattle with a female like this, as she has been a cornerstone of our program. In my opinion she is one of the best cows, regardless of breed, that I have ever seen. This is an extraordinary opportunity and truly once in a lifetime chance. She is PERFECT!

Talk about hard to decide. Y35 and Y38 are full sisters by Hueftle’s Jackhammer. ABS teamed up with Schroeder Ranch (South Dakota) and Le Doux Ranch (Kansas) for a stellar investment. This very popular ABS sire has set the world on fire as a triple star calving ease and carcass merit bull and is a high-liner in the growth numbers as well. Take Jackhammer and combine that with S602 and POW!!! If you like them, you will surely like their powerful flush mate bulls that will make a BIG BANG in our Spring Bull Sale. These are two heifers from a legendary cow and a proven bull. Make no mistake and take them both. They sell Open!

R544 is one of the most important building blocks of the C-Bar program. She is beyond broody. She combines all of the power of Major League and the sure perfection of Abigrace. R544 has been a major influence in our program. She is six years old and had been one of the multipliers in our embryo battery. She ranks in the top 1% Weaning Weight, 2% Yearling Weight, 3% Total Maternal, and 2% Marbling. She is in the top quarter for 6 different traits. Take all of the paper away and she is still extraordinary for phenotype. She represents what the Abigrace L7730 has done - feminine fronts, super rib and capacity, that square hip and great udder. The drought is the only reason that we are selling this tremendous females. She has been flushed 9 times and has an average of 6.5 embryos per flush.

This is a testament to the great things that are happening through the power of the Abigrace Cow Family.

With her outcross pedigree and then a calf by Powerball!!! How can you go wrong? An important note is that Powerball’s dam, 5088R has the LSF prefix. Ludvigson Stock Farm is a major source for fantastic females and they have placed bulls in several studs. This female is now owned by Solution Genetics. A flush sister was one of our featured and top selling lots in last year’s sale going to Mann Ranch of Piedmont, Kansas for $5,500. Y23 is a Cover Girl. Seth first saw her and I thought he wasn’t going to quit taking photos or talking about how much he liked her. There is no doubt that when he put the quote on the ad in the Red Angus Magazine, “...you would rather own than compete against”. I personally don’t think their is a stronger and more accurate statement to be made in describing this heifer. If you can describe her in a few words they would be “soggy, huge top and huge capacity”. Take her pedigree that is ALL-STAR. Her dam is U83, a Mulberry daughter and out of the legendary Tilly R542 cow. The Tilly cow family is one of the most prolific female lines in the C-Bar program. Her dam’s full sister, U82 was selected by Solution Genetics (Johnson) as their pick in our first sale, they know the good one as she went on to be Sr. Heifer Calf Champion at Denver in 2010. Mulberry has dominated the Red Angus breed with countless show ring winners and proven producers in the pasture. Take all of this and place her sire, Jackhammer in the mix. It doesn’t get any better than this!!!

The Story - Pure Power... She represents all the power, carcass and growth that the Abigrace cow family is known for. One of the most massive, moderate framed Red Angus cows in the breed. T715 was our choice as the best female from the flush that produced more well-known females: T711 with A-1 Land and Cattle the dam of A-1 Haymaker the bull that is owned by Bieber Red Angus and Jefferies Red Angus. RAB have two of these females that are impact females in their programs. In our first sale we sold the top selling choice flush out of her to Solution Genetics. Her daughter, X104 by Sakic, sells as a yearling heifer Lot 14. Her second flush resulted in three Cowboy Cut heifers, one of which is being kept to continue our program (remember that we are only keeping six heifers). The full sibs to her are EXTREMELY nice and are Lots 15 and 16. When we were picking the heifers for the sale, Seth Leachman, C Jason Spence and I all had differing opinions of which one to keep and which two to sell. The two that are in teh sale are top-shelf. Embrace the power of the Abigrace and Cowboy Cut in this offering. T715 would not have been for sale if it had not have been for the drought or her heifers. She has been flushed 7 times and has an average of 6.5 embryos per flush.

This is one of the few Fall Yearlings being offered. Again, a Sakic daughter and a Mission Statement x Abigrace Cow family. Nice set of EPDs with this package and legendary proven performance. This is what I would call a NAFTA type pedigree - All the great things from Canada to Texas! A really strong and balanced set of EPDs for this heifer. Power and profile! This female is truly correct and super square. First look at her dam, T715 and there is no doubt the power of the cowline in this heifer. The more you look at the Cowboy Cut progeny you will automatically recognize “The Stamp” that he puts on his calves. Y30 is as correct and as high quality of heifer as any in this offering. It is hard to decide which Cowboy Cut heifer is the favorite, this one is in the top. Her full sister Y31, Lot 15, is just as good!

The maternal granddaughter of L7730 combines all of the strengths of Abigrace with the proven power of Cheyenne. She has been a major influence in the C-Bar program and is no doubt one of the most sought after females in the offering today. Let their be no mistake in the greatness of U875. The Story: She came to us as one of the top selling lots in the 2007 Bet on Red Sale in Reno. She was the $10,000 featured female from Looking Glass Red Angus in Oregon. Our connection to 689 started much sooner than that. She was a 30 day pregnancy when we sold her dam as a bred heifer, Brown C-Bar Ms Abigrace CC P7. This was one of the top lots at the Mile High Sale at the National Western in January 2006 with a $20,000 ticket. Once again, she carries on the type that we are pursuing - shorter gestation, lower birth weight, more moderate size and performance oriented. She is one of the most correct and perfect uddered females on the place. Her first natural cal, sold as Lot 5 in our 2011 Bull sale, and was the lightest birth weight calf of the 2009 season with an actual weight of 63 lbs. Ron Speer of Beaver, Oklahoma was the winner on this impressive bull calf. Her first flush was to Sakic. This resulted in C-Bar Abby X47, an April heifer that Owen Tolar and his father Tony teamed up to purchase as the top selling lot in the 2010 sale. We sold a fall full sib to her in the Reds On Ice sale this January to Ray Dowd of Scott City, Kansas. There are heifers in the sale, not to mention an exceptional ET heifer calf by Cowboy Cut as well. 689S is a young female that is a consistent producer in the embryo and natural calf. A Cowboy Cut daughter is one of the six heifer calves that we are keeping for continuing our program. She has been flushed 7 times and has an average of 6.5 embryos per flush.

Combine the power, style and athletic traits of Sakic and then place them on with a Vacation daugther and you have the front pasture kind. Research the top and bottom sides to find true females like Beckton B571 and then compliment it with Glacier Logan 210. If you like a cow that is spacious then their dam, 689 is your ticket. When Steve, Neil Hueftle and I went to Canada three years ago, we stopped and studied the bulls in stud in Alberta. Sakic is the only bull that was athletic and didn’t look like a Sumo wrestler! We all agreed on that. There is no wonder he is one of the most popular flush bulls in the Red Angus breed throughout North America. Full sisters to our top selling heifer in last years sale to A-1 Land & Cattle, Tony Tolar of Muenster, Texas and our $5,000 heifer in the Reds on Ice at Denver in 2011. T701 holds a special place for us, as she was our top pick at the NILE a couple of years ago. One thing that we like about her is that we finally got the opportunity to have some of Schnick’s genetics in our program. 701 is a super, powerful female that is awesome from top to bottom, front to back. She has a tremendous amount of natural width and could be one of the widest based females on the place. She is more than a tank, she is the mothership! Not only is she awesome in her design, but she has a perfect udder. Study her a longtime and you will not be able to find any flaws (if any). We are keeping one heifer out of her as a featured female in our Red Angus magazine ads. We wish we could take all the credit for her but her outcross pedigree and phenotype have been major components in our flush program. You will surely like her, as well as her progeny. She was to be the replacement female, heir to the throne from T701. She exemplifies what a donor should be - moderate, super patterned, long hipped, tons of capacity, super correct in her movement and feminine in her design. Watch her video and you will appreciate her even more. She is most likely one of the top bred heifers in the sale and could be the springboard to bring your program past your competition. “This heifer will do nothing but get better, be sure to look at her in the pens” Don’t let a little frost on the ears and tail detour you from this Cowboy Cut heifer. She is super thick and very square, as well as a dark red. A great cattleman, Mitch Thomas of Raymondville, Texas once stated during the judging of the Ft. Pasture exposed to Powerball from 4/23 to 7/28/12. This Mulberry heifer has potential to put the new owner on the map! You saw her as one of the feature heifers in the Red Angus Magazine ad. She is possibly one of the strongest EPD lots of the sale. She is a combination of all of the right things. On the great “Canada Artic Adventure” that Steve, Neil Hueftle and I took three years agon we make it a point to stop by Brylor Ranch. Bryan and Sherry Mackenzie were awesome hosts in the middle of winter with more snow than this Texican had ever seen in his life! What we wanted was to truly see Mulberry 26P in the flesh, in a pen and not on a halter or in a photo. When we saw him, we all agreed that he was one of the most correct bulls that we had ever seen - it was not all hype, it was the truth! There is no wonder why breeders all across the world have focused on him. This is one of the rarest opportunities that you will have to own a SUPERIOR outcross heifer with powerful EPDs. She is sure to be a highlight and will do nothing but get better.

Pasture exposed to Powerball from 5/15 to 7/28/11. This choice offering of FULL SIBS to Sakic make it an easy choice to decided to take both. They are so similar in their design that it is hard to tell them apart. You have to appreciate the broody, super deep rib and soggy look of these females. They can only be seperated by the slightly longer fronted X44. Certainly one of the only opportunities to buy FULL SIBS to Sakic. This was made possible by Steve owning an interest in 257P with Six Mile. When we too the “Canada Artic Adventure” we studied 257P long and hard. I sent a photo of her in the snow to Donnell Brown (R.A. Brown Ranch) and told him how good she was “one of the best cows that he had seen on his trip to Canada”. Look at her from head to tail and I challenge you to find a more perfect top line. Her tailhead ties in perfectly and then look at her cowy design and lots of bone. This is no weak kneed, frail-made, wallflower - this is one that is front and center and demands attention. Another great Jackhammer daughter from the 7907 cow family. As equally impressive is Y35, with her style that stands out. Do not be fooled by youth, as she is almost amonth and a half younger than her full sib. If you like your cattle with lots of guts, soggy made and the working cow-type, this is surely one that will top your list. She is broody, broody, broody and a deep red color that make her a nice package.

This Mission Statement and direct daughter of Abigrace may have short frosted ears but she is BIG on numbers. She is a growth and carcass queen. Huge numbers 50 WW and 99 YW... that makes her at the top of the class and then rollover to the carcass numbers. Top 1% on MARB, 3% for REA, and 13% FAT. There is no wonder with this performance that she has been in the donor program. The combination of functional phenotype adds so much to this female. She is all the things a cow should be in a working package. This is one of the strongest pedigrees performance wise in todays offering. The drought is the ONLY reason T712 is being offered. Take advantage of this functional combination female.

Cowboy Cut might be the next female maker of the breed. His “stamp” is AWESOME. This heifer catches your eye from the moment that you enter the pen. She is one of the most complete females in the offering. I am sure that her video will attract tremendous attention but to see her in person is the icing on the cake. She is compelte, as I have mentioned before. Deep does not start to describe her, I expect this to be one of the top offerings. Come early, stay late and remember her.

U816 sells with a 10/2/11 bull calf at side by Colt 45, birth weight 87 lbs. We have two full brothers born in the spring that will be at the top of our bull crop. A lot of proven performance from U816. Combine the size, power and performance of Norseman King and stack that back on top of the maternal granddaughter power of the Gold Robber line and this is as good as it gets. She has that perfect front pasture look - her long front and big, broody design tells you that she is truly donor material. She has been used extensively in the C-Bar program and is truly one of the foundation building blocks of the program. If you ever wanted to capitalize on an outcross pedigree, then look at her and then study her progeny in this offering. She works when the bull doesn’t ... think about that statment and then examine this one as a once in a lifetime opportunity. She has been flushed 5 times and has an average of 7.5 embryos per flush.

There is a reason that this is the last lot in the sale. Study this heifer and you will like her sire, Jackhammer, the popular ABS bull. Her dam, W982 is a Makin Hay daughter. She could be considered one of the most functional females of the sale due to her pedigree. When Steve describes this cow family he makes two statements: 1) She blows a fuse with whatever you put her with - in a great way and 2) Why did you talk me out of J059? Y25s maternal granddam is J059. On my first trip to C-Bar four years ago, I found her in the pasture and asked if he would ever sell her. Steve grinned and replied, “most likely not”. Later that fall I sold a load of cows to Kelly and Salle Box of Justin Drop, Texas. When Kelly came to see them in Kansas he fell in LOVE with this cow and somehow she managed to be in the deal. I try to credit myself with being that good of salesman, whatever the case J059 is a great one! The Box family have used her as a major building block in their program. We are especially blessed to have Kelly as a customer and great example of a true man of God. Kelly has fought a nasty brain tumor with a phenomenal attitude and spirit. Through the great doctors and most importantly his faith, the tumor is not a factor and the Box family is enjoying life in Drop, Texas. We wish their son, Randall Box, a wonderful marriage on November 12th to Tara Butler. Red Angus make great wedding gifts!

Mi Amigos, Join us November 11, 2011 in Brownell, Kansas for one of the most influential Red Angus genetic offerings in history. This is the truest and deepest set of cattle that you will find; take advantage of this opportunity. Great people accomplish great things. Steve Maier is one of those talents who sees through cattle and makes great ones. Steve, Neil Hueftle and I made a “Canadian Arctic Winter Adventure Trip” a couple of years ago where we studied cattle from Saskatchewan to Alberta. With snow over my boot tops, this Texican was certain he was going to freeze to death. None the less, we saw some awesome cattle, met with great cattlemen across the entire country and we all came back with new fire for the Reds! The fruits of our trip are seen in this sale. The data in this catalog demonstrates how phenomenal the cattle are which Steve has developed. My oldest son, Gage, has visited Steve and Cynthia’s numerous times with me. Gage looks forward to every trip so we can go look at the “greatest ones”. There are several people who have made the sale preparation run smoothly. Seth Leachman has been an outstanding resource for us by providing an unabridged knowledge of the Red Angus breed and superior photo skills to make the cattle represent themselves in their most natural state. Brett Spader of DVAuction is simply the best man in the industry to work with – if you don’t have him and his crew - you’re not playing with aces. Landi Campbell with EncoreVisions is the Super Woman of advertising and is the make-it-happen player to have on your team. She understands livestock, people, deadlines, advertising and auctioneers – and she is a Red Raider! Kyle Gilchrist is a longtime friend and when I called him about being the auctioneer for this sale he said, “Let’s do it Colonel. It will be a great day in Brownell, Kansas”. With it raining from Texas to Canada while we were proofing this catalog, I believe this drought is on the mend - for which I give thanks and praise to the Lord for everything he provides and place my faith in him. So, with excitement and passion about the great cattle being offered in this sale, I say, come join us and get yourself some great ones! We look forward to seeing you November 11th. C. Jason Spence Sale Manager

Dear Red Angus Enthusiasts, When I was approached by C Jason Spence this summer and asked if I would help out with the C-Bar Red Angus female sale, I very quickly accepted. I have known Steve and his family for many years, going back to the days when he managed one the most successful cooperator herds for my family business, Leachman Cattle Company. Steve attended many of our annual events, and I believe this is where he developed his passion for Red Angus cattle. In a very short period of time, Steve has developed one of the more prominent programs in the country. His Red Angus herd has been built around a very select group of females from some of the most prolific, productive and profitable cow families in the industry. Not only is this herd superior for growth, maternal and carcass traits, they also have been selected with phenotype and structure as a must. The country has seen one of, if not the worst droughts in history throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, and unfortunately the C-Bar Ranch is one of its victims. Now is a great opportunity to capitalize on their misfortune and acquire breed leading genetics that otherwise would never leave this ranch. This is a phenomenal offering of mature proven donors, and their subsequent progeny, including young bred cows, and a set of ET heifer calves that would be hard to match anywhere in the country. I have studied the offering extensively and would be glad to help with any questions on any or all animals selling. Please feel free to contact me via my cell phone, 406-591-5651, or email at: sal1968@msn.com. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to seeing you at the sale… I guarantee you will not be disappointed! Sincerely, Seth Leachman
