FROM THE CORNER OFFICE

2022 STATE OF THE ASSOCIATION

In 2022, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has seen a strong demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics and an increase in the number of herd assessments within the AGA herdbook. However, this year also brought challenges, such as severe drought, to many Gelbvieh and Balancer stakeholders all throughout the country. With the many ups and downs of today’s cattle industry, the AGA remains focused on accomplishing the goals within the 2022-2027 long-range strategic plan to provide tools and services to help AGA members and their customers be successful in a modern beef industry.

The AGA continues to work to provide the most accurate performance predictions possible to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Through the relationship with the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation, AGA is a part of a collaborative effort that forms one of the most powerful genetic evaluations in the world. Not only does the tremendous amount of data flow going into this evaluation help to make the selection tools more accurate, the EPDs for growth and carcass traits are also across-breed comparable. Additionally, IGS continues to utilize and improve upon the cuttingedge technology, with input from industry leaders in animal breeding and genetics, and places emphasis on research into novel economically relevant traits. We look forward to the collaborative efforts in 2023 and new traits, such as mature weight and multi-breed dry matter intake.

This year the AGA continued to place emphasis on quality data collection and member education surrounding AGA programs and services. In April 2022, the AGA launched the Cow Power Female Genotyping Project. This initiative offers

members the opportunity to receive a research price of $25 for a genomic test on females in order to DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory.

The AGA’s Carcass Data Collection Project aims to collect carcass records along with genotypes on Gelbvieh and Balancer-sired feeder cattle. Data that measures economically relevant traits such as marbling and carcass weight, is extremely valuable to the evaluation. Collecting this in combination with the genotypes helps to increase the accuracy of the genetic tools producers can use when selecting registered Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle.

Marketing efforts for promoting Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics throughout the beef industry continue to increase as staff looks for ways to expand the breed’s market share. Throughout this past year, marketing efforts consisted of print advertising in both national and regional publications, digital advertising, increased social media marketing, an episode of the “The American Rancher” on RFDTV, a Gelbvieh and Balancer segment on NCBA’s Cattlemen to Cattlemen, radio and podcast advertisements on programs such as “Working Ranch Radio Show” and “Ranch It Up”, and much more. This year AGA staff made multiple producer visits, and traveled to field days, bull sales, and industry events including the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, summer feeder calf sales, Beef Improvement Federation Symposium and more. AGA staff travel, whether to industry events or producer visits, is a vital part of spreading the Gelbvieh and Balancer message.

The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) held one of their largest junior classic shows in recent history at the AGJA Crossroads Classic in

Salina, Kansas, July 3-8, 2022. The AGJA board of directors and staff works hard each year to put on a great event for the youth within the breed, and this year was no exception. The AGJA continues to be a vital part of the AGA in helping to develop leaders not only within the breed, but within the industry, and it is exciting to see the junior association continuing to grow!

The American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) continues their work in serving the AGA membership and works hard to ensure a strong financial position for Gelbvieh for years to come. This year, the AGF completed their seventh annual Scale and Rail Carcass Contest and Steer Challenge and saw great participation with ten participants and over 90 head. A special thank you to Kinsley Feeders, participants, and the steer challenge committee.

As we move forward into 2023 with the strategic plan as our guide, we will work together to accomplish the goals and strategies to take the breed and association to the next level. F

THE BOARD A FOND FAREWELL

Greetings from cold and snowy North Dakota! I feel like that’s exactly how I began my first column a year ago. It just goes to show how much things can change in a year, and yet some things stay the same. December will be the conclusion of six years of service on the AGA board for me, and as I look back on countless meetings, phone conferences, and conventions, that saying certainly rings true.

In 2016, when I began my time on the board, the AGA was in a very interesting position. We were in a trend of financials that were not favorable to the longevity of the Association, were beginning to experience the difficulty of hiring staff in our location and we were still struggling with the pain of semi-annual EPD runs that could swing a herd overnight. That’s quite the setting to walk into as a freshman board member! I’d like to take a moment to thank all the board members at that time who were patient with us fresh-faced kids that kept asking “Why” and “How can we fix this”.

Looking back over the last six years, the amount of change that has taken place is monumental when you look at it from 30,000 feet. In six short years we were able to transition the Association to single-step EPDs. A transition that was frightening at first glance but one that I have quickly grown to appreciate as the wild swings have been taken out of the database. We were able to transition our staff out of the Denver metro area and relocate them to Lincoln, Nebraska. Another change that raised eyebrows, but the cost savings, employment recruitment, and proximity to ‘cow country’ have certainly justified the move. As a staff and an association, we weathered a global shutdown that included the postponement of our 50th anniversary celebration.

Over the last six years, we have changed the trend of declining assessment numbers and financial uncertainty; I’m happy to report that today we are financially stable,

and we have begun work on making those funds work for the association.

Through the last six years, we have seen staff members join us, and sadly we have seen staff members depart the Association. As a membership, we have always formed close bonds and relationships with these staff members, and it always hurts to see them leave. As much as I’d like to expect our staff to stay with us until retirement, this isn’t a reality in today’s environment. When you look through the staff that has walked through the doors of the AGA, we have had some incredibly talented individuals over the years. While they may have taken a new job, many have never “left” Gelbvieh. I heard a podcast interview the other day with a former staff member who stated, “My time at Gelbvieh prepared me for where I am now”. I’d challenge all of us to wish staff well when they depart, keep in touch with them, and remember that personal growth and improvement is not a bad thing, especially when we can hang our hat on creating some of the leaders in the beef industry – all who credit Gelbvieh for that growth.

Speaking of staff, I would like to take a moment to give a special thank you to all our current staff. It’s no secret that the last year has been especially challenging as the country feels the effects of a changing job market. Our staff has had to step up and fill in roles that have pushed them outside of their comfort zones and they have rocked it! I’d especially like to thank Megan Slater for her leadership over the past three years. In her tenure with the association, Megan has done nearly every job in the office and brings a unique perspective to the operations of the Association. It has been a pleasure to work with her over the years, watching her grow and thrive in her position.

In closing, if I could offer any advice to the breed, the staff, and the membership, it is simply to “Be Kind”. In the grand scheme of the beef industry, we are a player that is perfectly positioned to start

making waves. The competition is stiff, and things are changing quicker than they ever have in the past. Our biggest obstacle to overcome is not an external force, it’s ourselves. Be kind to your other breeders and work together. Let’s not spend so much time worrying about “what the other guy” is doing or fighting within our own breed. Let’s harness this energy and use it for good, and to push us forward. On the same token, be kind to our staff. Remember that they are on our team and are here working with us to advance the breed. I know that everyone is frustrated with the delays and employee shortages that we are all experiencing in every facet of our lives, but remember to be nice to the ones who showed up to work. We have an amazing staff that pours themselves into their jobs. Show them some grace and take a breath before firing off that email or phone call. And finally, be kind to your board of directors. This is truly a thankless job that is under appreciated. This group of 15 individuals donates countless hours of their time and dollars to keep this association moving forward. I admire the way that they have “checked their brands at the door” and made decisions that they truly believe are in the best interest of the breed. While we do act as a sounding board for the membership, take a moment to express your appreciation for what this group does and the contribution they make to benefit Gelbvieh.

It’s been a wild six years, but I truly believe we have left the association in a better place than we found it. I look forward to sitting on the other side of the table for a while and enjoying more time with my family going forward. They’ve supported me through this endeavor, Maralee and Galen have kept things under control at home while I’ve been gone for meetings, and I’m deeply indebted to them. Now it’s time for me to repay those favors. With that – Go Gelbvieh!F

the industry standard for profitable genetics DECEMBER 11th 2022

Eleven years ago, my grandpa approached me and said, “I wanna buy your bred heifer.” I smiled and said, “How much money do you have?” My grandpa asked me, “What makes your heifer so special?” I replied, “She is tame and pretty, and she likes to be washed,” not having any idea about the important traits she posed as a Gelbvieh heifer. However, that breeding heifer was my first step into seedstock marketing. But in all reality, I now know that my grandpa understood the baseline responsibilities of quality cattle.

BASELINE RESPONSIBILITIES

This is the area that all registered cattle producers need to focus on the most. Responsibilities like producing a sound

structured, quiet disposition, good footed, and easy fleshing cow. All traits that the Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle strive to achieve. Our cattle also have to be versatile, because your customer may live in the frigid winters of South Dakota or the steamy summers of Texas.

As Gelbvieh and Balancer producers we have to meet the threshold, by meeting the baseline criteria. Once we produce sound, good-footed, easy-fleshing cattle we can step out of the box on EPDs and phenotypes.

CUSTOMER RELATIONS

Customer relations make or break a business. A successful business can truly be determined by customer relations. With all this in mind making customer relations can be difficult in certain ways.

As Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders, we must build customer relations with every breeder whether he lives five miles down the road or five states away. You have to create an atmosphere that people want to be a part of for years to come. I have been fortunate enough to have grown up on a ranch where we take our customer relations very seriously. I was once told “This is a people business, the cattle are a by-product.”

MARKETING

Social media is used by millions of people throughout the day. It is one of the most used practices to reach an audience. The important aspect of marketing is knowing your audience and appealing to them. As Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders, we have to understand the needs of our customers when it comes to advertising, while keeping in mind it has to be easy to identify and eye-catching.

People are subconscious, impulse buyers. Whether it be my six-year-old brother at a candy store or bull customers on sale day; presentation is everything. As Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders we have to do our part by presenting cattle that are attractive, unique, and intriguing, all while meeting the baseline responsibilities. At the end of the day, the boldest pictures, and brightest colors will draw attention. For better or worse, that is marketing.F

Marketing Non-Seedstock Quality Calves

Any seedstock producer will tell you, if you’re marketing every calf as a “keeper” you won’t be in the seedstock business for very long. The law of averages, and, hopefully, your keen eye will keep your seedstock selection contained to the very top-end of your calf crop. But what to do with those calves that don’t make the cut?

Every animal has value, some just more than others. It’s important to remember that the calves in your cull

pen possess the genetics to excel, and while, phenotypically, they may not fit your seedstock offering, performance shouldn’t be unattainable…if it is, perhaps your culls will provide an opportunity to review where you are in your breeding program. Afterall, the commercial customer is the goal for us all! Cull is a word for smooth-mouthed cows that won’t settle, cull and calf are two words that a seedstock producer shouldn’t ever utter back-to-back.

The strategy many seedstock producers employ in marketing non-seedstock quality calves sees those animals finished and marketed on yield and grade, with many also utilizing value-add programs to secure a greater premium.

Justin Taubenheim, Taubenheim Gelbvieh, says that their operation’s strategy to marketing animals that aren’t seedstock quality has worked well for their operation and helped to show order buyers and processors that the Gelbvieh

breed is one they should be looking at for their premium beef programs.

“We sell bred heifers on our annual bull sale and everything that doesn’t make the cut (bulls and heifers) goes into our feedlot where we are able to take advantage of the NHTC (non-hormone treated cattle) and Balancer® Edge valueadd programs,” he says.

Taubenheim says that because seedstock selection is made at weaning, no calves are banded or implanted.

“We don’t do anything (as far as making seedstock decisions) until after weaning, September or October, and we’ve never gotten into the practice of implanting,” he says of the recipe that allowed their calves to be a fit for the NHTC valueadded programs. “We sell to Creekstone Farms and it’s working out really well for us. We’ve been 96% Choice or better and

around 94% ones, twos and threes, our cattle – Gelbvieh cattle – can grade.”

He adds that the Gelbvieh breed, as a whole has come along way and the type of cattle the breed is producing today is doing a lot toward breaking the stigma.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling at weaning or retaining ownership, carcass data should be important to you,” he says, adding that, like every producer in the industry, they are just trying to raise the highest quality, most wellrounded cattle they can.

In addition, the Balancer® Edge program has allowed Taubenheims to keep a closer eye on their seedstock program in terms of what is working and what isn’t from a performance perspective.

The program requires a minimum of 75% of the sires used to be registered Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls, with a

minimum of 25% Gelbvieh genetics. The verification process requires producers to submit first, and last calf born dates, head count support and registration papers of the sires to verify Gelbvieh genetics. The Source and Age Verification (SAV) program has been in practice in the beef industry since 2004, a program that Balancer® Edge meets the requirements of to allow Gelbvieh and Balancer producers to gain premium opportunity through the marketing of cattle into the China Export Verification program, the NHTC program for the EU, Verified Natural Beef, GAP 5-Step Animal Welfare and others.

DATA BULLETIN THE VALUE OF GENOMIC TESTING

Spring sale season is right around the corner, and that means that breeders are dusting off their livestock judging hats, pulling out the stenos, and heading to the pastures to start making some tough decisions. Are you looking to add new females to the herd? Buy a new herd bull? If the answer to those questions is yes, then you will probably find yourself flipping through sale catalogs and analyzing EPDs on animal after animal in order to make the best decision for your herd. This is where genomic testing can make all the difference. What is the value of an EPD if it has a very low accuracy? Having genomically-enhanced EPDs on an animal can help take away some of the uncertainty and allows you to make more informed selection decisions.

Let’s start at the beginning. When an animal is registered with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) a set of EPDs is given to the animal based on its parents’ EPDs (also known as parental averages). This set of EPDs with no supporting information isn’t the most accurate, but we know that submitting phenotypic information and recording progeny from that animal will slowly start to increase the accuracy. The problem is that this process takes years, especially for females, and that could lead to you unknowingly making breeding decisions that don’t best suit your herd. What if we could speed this process up? What if we could increase the accuracy of an animal’s EPDs in a matter of weeks instead of years? Genomic testing allows us to do just that. Genomic testing an animal gives us the information that we need to factor in the genetic component when calculating that animal’s EPDs. Dr. Jamie Courter, Beef Product Manager, Genomics at Neogen Inc. explains “The addition of a genomic

profile to an existing EPD helps to increase the accuracy of the predictions. These increased accuracies are of value especially in young ‘unproven’ sires. It enables producers to use superior genetics with confidence.”

Now let’s dive even deeper. We know that genomic testing allows us to increase the accuracy of an animal’s EPDs in a much shorter time frame than data collection alone. What would the effect be if the animal in question was parent qualified to parents who were also both genomically tested? Courter states “Having both the sire and dam of an animal genomically tested immediately provides value to the EPD of the offspring and related animals. Of most value is that parentage markers come with every genomic profile. Therefore, once the offspring is tested, reported parentage can be confirmed. It is estimated that 18% of all reported pedigrees are incorrect, making confirmation of lineage of utmost importance.” Having genomic testing done on both parents allows you to see the whole picture and make highly informed decisions not only on purchases, but also in your own operation. You will be able to confidently select new genetics to bring into your herd and because of those more accurate EPDs and confirmed parentage, you will be able to make more informed breeding decisions. They say that knowledge is power, and that is definitely the case when it comes to the impact of genomic testing. Knowing without a doubt that an animal will perform and produce a certain way makes your decision-making process that much easier.

Genomic testing also has benefits for the seller. The increased accuracy on the EPDs of the animals that you are selling allows you to confidently market your animals to your customers and

having sale animals that are qualified to genomically tested parents allows you to tell both sides of the story on those animals. “Furthermore, increased accuracy provides breeders confidence in their yearly bull offering. Genomics serves as a type of insurance, so bulls marketed as ‘heifer bulls’ truly are ‘heifer bulls’”, says Courter. As a seedstock supplier, don’t you want to be offering your customers the most information you can? Having testing done on your sale animals helps set your customer up for success starting with their sale day purchase.

The bottom line is that genomic testing is a positive thing for all involved parties and makes an excellent selection tool. As you start preparing for this upcoming sale season, make sure that you are doing everything that you can to set yourself up for success with these animals for years to come. If you have any questions about genomic testing with the American Gelbvieh Association, please feel free to contact Meg Vanderbur in the office at meganv@gelbvieh.org or 303-465-2333.F

For the last several years, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has gathered sale results of registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle sold at public auction. Sale prices of individual lots are obtained from breeders and collected from online auction websites. The information in this database is being used to help identify price trends, and help provide insight into what traits are collectively important to buyers.

There are 39 sales in our data set for the spring 2022 sale season (January-April 2022). This includes a total of 3,248 animals with individual prices reported from that time frame compared to 2,785 animals from the previous year. The total number is comprised of 2,715 bulls with an average price of $4,978 and 533 females with an average price of $2,524.

There was a total of 2,785 animals with individual prices reported from 38 sales in the 2021 spring sale season. Of that total number of animals, there were 2,331 bulls, and 454 females included in the

Analysis

database. The average sale prices were $4,865 and $2,619 respectively.

The total number of bull sales reported were up 14%, and the average sale price of bulls was up $113 per head. The total number of females in the report were also up 14%, while the average price was down $95 per head for the females.

• 77% of the 2022 sale prices reported were from the central and north central region of the United States.

• 51% of sales were held at ranches and 49% were held in livestock auction markets.

• 59% of sales were Balancers, 28% purebred Gelbvieh, with the remaining 13% comprised of hybrids and other breeds.

• 78.5% of the cattle were black with an average sale price of $4,574.

• 21.5% were red-hided with an average of $4,580 including bulls and females.

One area of analysis is looking at the service type of the sale animals and what affect that has on sale prices. In 2022, 51% of the animals were sired by natural service (NS) which is up 1% from the previous year and about 4% higher than 2020. Artificial insemination (AI) comprised 38% of the animals, which is similar to 2021, with both years trending lower than 2020. Also trending lower since 2020, are sale animals that are a product of embryo transfer (ET), with 2022 seeing only 11% of sale animals resulting from ET.

While the percentage of animals resulting from AI and ET were down in both 2021, and 2022, the average price difference is greater than ever before.

The 2021 sale animals that were the result of artificial insemination sold for $805 more, on average, than the animals that were the result of natural service, and in 2022 that spread increased to $1,154. The average sale price for animals resulting from embryo transfer was $1,294 more

than than those animals conceived via natural service.

Another very important tool that breeders should be utilizing is DNA testing. A couple of the benefits include parent verification and the increased accuracy offered by genomic-enhanced EPDs. This is a value-added proposition for sellers and buyers alike. Our 2021

sales data shows that animals with GEEPDs sold for $553 more, on average, than those animals without. In 2022, that premium grew to $610.

GGP-100k costs $48.00 through AGA. This panel offers add-on trait test pricing, and includes markers and parent verification if parents have markers on file with the AGA. This panel is generally used for registered sale animals, AI sires, and donor dams.

If you’re doing the math—it works. GGP-100k provides a huge return on investment that provides peace of mind to both you and your customers.

After reviewing the data and updating this article from previous years, I still came to the same conclusion: Artificial insemination is one of the most effective tools available to cattle producers to make genetic progress. The tool improves

the productivity and profitability of the cattle operation.

I would encourage seedstock producers to individually review their own operations and management practices to evaluate the success and effectiveness of their current AI program.

Looking at these collective numbers from sale data analysis, there is certainly a clear case for the opportunity technology-driven management can provide an operation.F

2022 AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION Annual Report

2022 has been somewhat of a “catch your breath” year for the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) following the excitement of the 2021 AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration.

In 2020, the AGF released the “Gelbvieh in the U.S. The Breed. The Association. The People.” history book in celebration of the AGA’s 50 years. The AGF is still promoting the book and it makes a great holiday gift or great thank you gift for bull customers. This project falls under, member education, one of the foundation’s three pillars. They are available from the AGA office, please visit the AGA website under the Foundation tab for ordering instructions.

Also under the heading of member education is the AGF Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge. The 2022 contest was outstanding from the standpoint of breeder participation with 10 breeders participating and over 90 head of cattle fed out. Cattle were fed at Kinsley Feeders near Kinsley, Kansas, thanks to Derek Martin, general manager and AGA member. Cattle graded 78% choice and 1% prime.

For the 2023 Steer Challenge, Kinsley Feeders has once again agreed to feed the steers. Steers are due to arrive December 12-16, 2022. Thank you to those breeders donating six steers to the Foundation this year.

Under youth development, the Foundation once again sponsored the awards banquet at the American

Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Crossroads Classic held in Salina, Kansas, and provided $4,000 in scholarships to AGJA members. The AGF Finance Committee has been hard at work establishing an endowed scholarship fund and investment criteria which will fund future scholarships. Adjustments in banking arrangements, revising gifting agreements and other such activities have kept this committee hard at work.

The AGF is also planning to start an endowed fund that will further support the junior association. This is a lofty goal and will take big bucks. In addition, in 2022, the AGJA board brought back the AGJA Breeder of the Year award. The AGF was consulted regarding the process. Candidates were nominated by third parties and nominations were evaluated by the AGF officers and finalist were interviewed individually via Zoom meetings. The 2022 AGJA Breeder of the year was Alexx Starr.

Research is the final tenant of the Foundation. The AGF partnered with the AGA on a Carcass Data Collection Project in 2019 by pledging $20,000. This project seeks to add carcass data to our registry increasing the accuracies of our carcass EPDs. We continue to support this important research project.

The Foundation ended the 2022 fiscal year with more than $1 million in assets in spite of the downturns in financial markets.

The AGF continues to support the American Gelbvieh Association, the

breed and our members. We are a volunteer organization and welcome members who have an interest in preserving the breed and the association.

In years past at the AGA convention, our investment broker, Doug Wills has made a presentation and discussed estate planning with convention participants. We have added a “resource” tab under the Foundation section on the AGA website. There are some good resources that will help our members start thinking about estate planning. It is essential that each of us take estate planning seriously to ensure a smooth transition of ownership of what past and present generations have worked so hard to accomplish. As a non-profit 501 (c)(3) foundation it is self-serving for us to also recommend considering a gift to the Foundation to help preserve the Gelbvieh breed. Naming rights are available for scholarship grants, research funds or whatever area of interest you may have. We value your gifts and donations and would be happy to discuss details with you.

Hope to see you in Louisville, Kentucky, for the AGA National Convention December 7-9, 2022.F

STATE ASSOCIATION NEWS

OKLAHOMA GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION HOSTS FIELD DAY

On September 10, Oklahoma Gelbvieh Association hosted more than 50 people at their annual Field Day at the Farm breed tour. The event was hosted by Miller Rockin’ M Gelbvieh, Porum, Oklahoma.

Five exhibitors displayed cattle representative of the breed qualities and attributes for attendees who traveled from within the state, Arkansas, and Texas.

“We started having breeders bring cattle to our ranch,” says organizer and Field Day at the Farm host, Chad Miller. “It has been a great opportunity to both show and talk about what the breed brings to a cow herd with people who are interested in trying Gelbvieh genetics,” he says.

Tom Strahm, AGA commercial marketing director, was also in attendance to answer questions and share breed programs with attendees.

TABOR’S 4T RANCH WINS OKLAHOMA’S BEST BEEF COMPETITION

Tabor’s 4T Ranch, Agra, Oklahoma, won the 3rd annual Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Foundation Stockyards ‘SteakOut, hosted by the Oklahoma National Stockyards.

The event, held on October 15, hosted nine other teams from around the state. Winners were voted on by a committee.

“It was a great chance to showcase our Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics and show our consumers how great Gelbvieh beef really is. We even beat out Waygu in People’s Choice,” 4T Ranch co-owner and AGA member, Connie Tabor shares, “I wanted to share and hope that our fellow Gelbvieh producers will continue to go out and showcase what Gelbvieh has to offer.”

If your state association has news and you would like to see it shared in an issue of Gelbvieh World, send details to malerie@gelbvieh.org.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

A LETTER FROM THE AGJA PRESIDENT

Members of the American Gelbvieh Association, WOW, what an outstanding and blessed year it has been for our junior program! From a record setting fundraiser to start the year to record numbers of cattle and exhibitors at the junior classic. It is evident that Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle continue to gain the interest of cattlemen and women nationwide. This year truly has been a year of growth and our strategic plan reflects that strategy. The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) board of directors is focusing on outreach, outlook, education, leadership, and involvement. These core areas are all intended to focus on each and every junior member as well as draw new members to the breed.

As board members, we continue to educate ourselves by attending various industry events. In late April, the entire board had the opportunity to travel to College Station, Texas, for the Youth Beef Industry Congress (YBIC) conference. While there, we toured various facilities and learned from industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and Texas A&M University professors about subjects related to real world issues and current agricultural topics. We also had the opportunity to interact with youth from other breed associations. As we wrapped up this event, excitement began to build as junior nationals was just a few short months away.

Early July found us in Salina, Kansas, at the Crossroads Classic for junior nationals. Members from across the country and Canada spent the week participating in various contests designed to build industry knowledge and leadership skills. This week builds relationships, renews friendships, and stokes the competitive fires amongst our Gelbvieh juniors. As a board

member, this week feels like a month, it is early mornings, late nights, and long hours in between; but it is so worth it to know that we are preparing the next generation of beef and agricultural producers and advocates. We spend many hours at our spring and fall board meetings focusing on creating an event that is more than just a cattle show.

In October, we wrapped up our fall board meeting. The weekend was spent working on our budget, discussing ways to continue to grow our association and make it better. Our board impressed me with their knowledge, respect, and involvement in the Gelbvieh breed. As president, it is an honor to work with such a great group of leaders.

I know it gets said a lot, but I truly want to thank each and every person who has supported the AGJA not only this year but in years past. To the AGA members, thank you for your continued support. Your dedication to our junior program is vital to our success. To the AGA staff, thank you for everything you do, especially the things you do behind the scenes, your work does not go unnoticed. Jake Renner, thank you for caring about us and this breed more than we could ever ask for. To our three junior advisors, your guidance and words of wisdom are so appreciated. To the junior members, you are all special, and it is an honor to serve you. Lastly to all the junior parents, thank you for all the sacrifices you make that allow us to do the things we love.

I am proud to represent this breed and association that invests so much in our youth. I cannot wait to see what the future holds.

Sincerely, Jaycie Forbes, AGJA President

SUMMER CLASSIC REFLECTION

The AGJA and its members that attended had the extreme pleasure to not only witness firsthand but experience the generosity and humble hearts welcoming our Gelbvieh family to Kansas for the 2022 AGJA Crossroads Classic in Salina, Kansas, July 3-8. Members came from all over, traveling through the night and across countless states to network with lifetime friends, bond with new members, share stories and participate in more than 15 contests! For a more descriptive overview of our stay in Kansas, we’d encourage you to read the Junior Connection article in the August issue of Gelbvieh World written by Jaycie Forbes, current AGA President. This was the largest AGJA Junior Classic on record with more than

Thank you to the host state of Kansas, volunteers, parents, industry partners, sponsors, AGA staff, and all Junior Classic participants. Thank you for your dedication to the junior program. Your hard work and generosity do not go unnoticed.

We hope to see all of you in Huron, South Dakota, July 2-7, 2023 for the 2023 AGJA Great Dakota Classic. Be on the look out for new and exciting updates to what this event has to offer the AGJA membership and our loyal partners.

The winner will be drawn during the 2023 AGA National Sale at Cattlemen’s Congress on January 2, 2023. We will be selling our “last chance” ticket bundles at the very beginning of the National Sale, both those in attendance and those watching from home will have a chance to purchase. We appreciate all of those who continue to support the membership and its commitment to the future leaders of the Gelbvieh breed.

Juniors can be found attending, participating and supporting our fellow Gelbvieh members throughout the year at the following events: Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Tradeshow in New Orleans, Louisiana; AGA spring board meeting; AGJA spring board meeting; The IGS Youth Leadership Conference, The Summit; and various industry events as they present themselves. We will also be serving the junior membership at our summer regional (TBD) as well as the 2023 AGJA Great Dakota Classic in Huron, South Dakota, July 2-7, 2023. We hope to see our fellow members throughout the year taking advantage of opportunities to grow as cattlemen and women.

As a not for profit organization, it is the support and encouragement of our members that makes events, activities and opportunities of all kinds possible. We look forward to your participation as a member of the AGJA in the sale of raffle tickets for the AGJA Donation Heifer Raffle. We anxiously await the Fourth Annual AGJA Online Auction March 25-26, 2023, offering some of the best Gelbvieh and Balancer genetic opportunities available from members all over the country. This auction benefits the AGJA, its members and efforts. The 2022-2023 AGJA board of directors will continue making sponsorship calls for Junior Classic awards sponsorships. With more than 200 individual awards provided to our exhibitors, please know we are very grateful and appreciative of any support you are able to provide.

A WORD FROM YOUR JUNIOR COORDINATOR, JAKE RENNER

As I approach the completion of my fourth year as the AGA member and youth activities coordinator, I am consistently impressed with the caliber of youth I have the fortune to work with. I cannot express enough the pride that I have for this organization and the talent that lies within. The AGJA is comprised of the brightest, most hardworking and humble young men and women. I am so grateful to have been chosen to serve this association in the capacity that I do. It is an honor to build the relationships that I have with the members of the AGJA and their families. The tenacity and determination of our membership to continue promoting, sharing and learning more about the Gelbvieh breed and its importance to the industry only solidifies that we are doing exactly what we should be within our association. As participation continues to grow at events like junior nationals, the IGS Youth Leadership Summit along with the incredible accomplishments outside of our association by members at their local, regional, state and national level, I am confident that we are headed in the right direction with no signs of slowing down.

Congratulations on a successful year to each and every one of you. Whether you attended the regional show in Nebraska, junior nationals in Kansas, your county fair or helped reach new heights in AGJA fundraising, I want to express my gratitude for your commitment and dedication to not only your future, but the future of this association.

Thank you to the parents, volunteers, sponsors, and industry partners for the continued support of our junior programs and continuing to believe in the youth that make our association what it is. Your time, dedication, and investments do not go unnoticed.

I look forward to what lies ahead for the membership and the leaders that make it what it is. In closing, I’ll leave you with a message I gave to those attending the 2022 AGJA Annual Banquet closing out the 2022 Junior Classic. To those joining our family in the teal jackets, I hope you believe in yourselves as much as the membership that looks upon you now does. I hope you see in yourself the potential to make a positive impact on not only the breed and the association, but the memories created within the association. The bar has been set high but trust me it is not unreachable. We have made great strides over the past four years that I’ve been lucky enough to serve as your AGA junior coordinator and I truly believe the best is yet to come.

Thank you for allowing me to work beside you.

MEET THE JUNIOR BOARD

JAYCIE FORBES | PRESIDENT

Jaycie Forbes, president, from Willow Lake, South Dakota, is thriving in her second year on the AGJA board of directors. Jaycie is a sophomore at South Dakota State University. She, along with her parents, Troy and Pam Forbes and brothers Wyatt and Cody operate Forbes Ranch. They run a registered herd of Gelbvieh and Balancer cows along with a large commercial sheep operation. Jaycie was heavily involved in sports in high school as a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball, and track. She was also very active in her schools FFA program as well as the local 4-H organization. She also enjoys working on show cattle, looking at cattle, traveling to cattle shows and talking cattle…pretty much anything cattle. She has been greatly influenced by previous board members and hopes to be a positive role model like they were to her. She also hopes to continue and build on the educational focus of our organization.

MADALYNN WELSH

| VICE PRESIDENT

Madalynn plays a significant (and currently long-distance) role in the management of Welsh Land & Livestock, her family’s Gelbvieh and Balancer operation. When she’s not assisting in the management of her family’s operation or completing tasks related to her board of director duties, you can find Madalynn watching college football, cheering on the Braves, hitting the gym, making an iced coffee, or listening to a podcast! As Madalynn looks forward to her fourth year on the junior board, she plans to maintain relationships and communication with the AGA board of directors and the American Gelbvieh Foundation and expand junior member education opportunities. Madalynn is honored to have been re-elected to the junior board of directors and looks forward to continuing to serve as the association’s vice president!

PRESTON DUNN | TREASURER

His first junior show was in 2015 and he’s been heavily involved in the junior association since. Preston’s goal as a board member is to be that “first connection” for junior members. “I also want to reach out to juniors that might not be able to attend junior nationals, but still get them involved (with AGJA) in any way we can.”

LILY JUDD | SECRETARY

Lily Judd, secretary, is the third generation at Judd Ranch in Pomona, Kansas. Her job description there is not restricted to cattle though, as throughout the year they are also working to maintain crops to feed the cattle year-round. Lily is currently a freshman at Butler Community College and active on their livestock judging team. In high school she played strong roles within the cross country, golf, powerlifting, basketball, and track teams. While serving as a director on the board this year, Lily is looking forward to continuing the same uplifting leadership role that past board members have created.
