Selling February 18, 2014 • Burwell, Neb. Incredible Quality ... selected from a continual AI program since 1965. You won’t find a better set Guaranteed! Guaranteed Genetics to convert grass to pounds, because after all what we are really selling is grass. Add genetics that will more efficiently convert grass to pounds, ultimately adding more dollars to your bottom line than any other trait. Good ranchers ride good horses and have great hard working cows eating their grass. At Cedar Top Ranch we demand both. Pampered cattle simply don’t have the bred-in ability to do their most important function of converting grass to protein. Cedar Top cows do this better than any other program in the country. Hard working cows make hard working bulls.

PRESIDENT’S VIEW

Measuring Our Progress We operate in a very dynamic business and it’s up to us to keep pace if we are going to remain relevant in the beef business. We could probably sit and debate all day long whether change is good or bad, but the real question is “Are we making progress?” By Rob Arnold THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association has had a couple of successful years in 2012 and 2013. Now is not the time to let our guard down. In fact, with all the issues taking place in the cattle industry, it’s more critical than ever to stay on the top of our game. We need everyone’s support whether it is your voice in our Association, your dedication of time through state and national association activities, and most importantly we need to maintain and grow our Gelbvieh membership. The AGA has initiated and completed many projects in the past year and made great progress for the benefit of AGA members and their commercial customers. Over the last year, we have been investigating the use of selection indexes to aid in breeding decisions. EPDs have been the staple for many years. Indexes incorporate several EPDs to help drive potential outcomes that have economic relevance. They are simple to use, highly marketable, and very effective. An AGA maternal index will be released in the near future. This will allow us to put an 6 | DECEMBER 2013

exclamation point on the maternal attributes of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle, and be the true maternal leader in the marketplace. Genetic conditions have also changed the way we do business. Rest assured through the adopted policies, the Board of Directors and staff are doing everything we can to minimize the economic impact to any breeder while making every effort to protect the integrity of our Gelbvieh herdbook. Genomic-enhanced EPDs are projected to be released in early 2014. This is a big mile stone for the AGA. GE EPDs offer breeders the ability to select younger sires with higher accuracies, and increase the rate of genetic progress in producing seedstock for the industry. One of the breed promotion goals identified in the long-range strategic plan is to promote Gelbvieh and Balancer to commercial producers. Staff has been diligently working on a commercial marketing program. This program is aimed to drive commercial demand for registered

Gelbvieh and Balancer seedstock, while assisting cow-calf producers predict the feeding profitability of their Gelbvieh-influenced feeder cattle. In August, the AGA Board approved hiring Virgil Scott, a fundraising consultant, to aid in the generation of funds for the American Gelbvieh Foundation. It is vitally important, for many reasons, that the Foundation be successful. One of the key values of the Foundation is research, including the research to complete many of the initiatives listed above. It is very important that funds for future research projects are available to keep Gelbvieh on the forefront of the beef business. As 2013 draws to a close and we embrace the New Year, we also look forward to the upcoming AGA activities. Committee meetings will be held this month, exhibitors are making final preparations for the National Western Stock Show, and we look forward to the 2014 AGA Annual Convention. Your membership and participation impacts the beef business. We look forward to your input on the committee meetings, and most of all we appreciate your membership. Please take the time to participate at some level in the 2014 AGA Convention Impacting the Beef Business – It Starts with Membership! FFF

JKGF FUTURE INVESTMENT X037

Future Investment will have the largest sire group in our March 15, 2014 Cowman’s Kind sale. He was the most sought after and highest selling Gelbvieh bull of the entire 2012 sale season. Semen is off the market except to the owners. Our Cowman’s Kind sale includes some outstanding Purebred and Balancer sons. A number of the 6 year old sale cows carry his valuable service. They represent a fresh genetic input to much of the Gelbvieh population. We look forward to your appraisal.

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW

Tenacity “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity,” Louis Pasteur, inventor of pasteurization and many vaccines, including rabies. By Jim Gibb BACK IN SEPTEMBER, Boulder county Colorado (just northwest of the American Gelbvieh Association headquarters) was hit with a 500-year flood that dropped 17 inches of rain in four days resulting in loss of life, and destroying homes, roads and other infrastructure. In many cases, the raging water created new riverbeds causing engineers and officials to question whether to build new roads next to the new riverbeds or put the rivers and roads back where they were. The tenacious will to rebuild with many reconstruction projects being completed ahead of schedule, has been impressive. Certainly 2013 has been a very good year for your Association, even though at times, the road had a few “washouts.” Our efforts have been directed at continuous progress towards achieving the goals set forth in AGA Impacting the Beef BusinessTM (IBB) strategic plan. Despite interruptions due to fawn calf (CA) and other issues, the IBB plan has provided the focus required to assure that we stay the course, the one crafted collectively by AGA members, Board and staff. The optimism of our membership was exemplified during an AGA Finance committee teleconference last summer. A committee member enthusiastically stated, “As the drought recedes, feed costs decline and commercial herds start to expand, Gelbvieh and Balancer® will see increased demand. We will come out of this in great shape.”

Breed Improvement The national cow herd will expand or at least stabilize in the near future and is why developing new EPDs for 8 | DECEMBER 2013

some key maternal traits is so critical. That effort was completed ahead of schedule, keeping us on target to officially unveil our new Gelbvieh and Balancer maternal index at the 2014 AGA Annual Convention. We also released AGA’s first feed efficiency EPDs last spring putting AGA at the forefront in the quest to help our customers reduce feed costs. Unfortunately, genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) were slowed by an issue out of our control, but with perseverance, this project is also scheduled to officially launch in January 2014. Our first multi-breed EPDs, enabled through a joint effort with the American Simmental and Red Angus Associations, were completed last January with broad industry acceptance. Providing Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders (and their bull buyers) with more accurate selection tools is a big part of AGA’s mission.

“As the drought recedes, feed costs decline and commercial herds start to expand, Gelbvieh and Balancer® will see increased demand. We will come out of this in great shape.”

Breed Promotion Promoting Gelbvieh and Balancer across the beef industry is another critical function of the AGA and we were highly successful in achieving (and exceeding) the goal of expanding market reach by 5 percent per year. •

Member Education Initiatives to convey the messages of the IBB plan have largely been accomplished with producer meetings and face-to face discussions. However, one of the key goals of making it easier to input data and retrieve more useful information also hit a roadblock. We are optimistic that this initiative is now progressing, albeit about one year behind schedule. In the meantime, staff have done a great job with some new instructional videos, aiding the use of the current system. Working with our American Gelbvieh Foundation consultant, some key programs are being developed that will be presented during the AGA Convention.

Not a wish list The IBB strategic plan is not a wish list. It is a deliberate, thoughtful set of goals that provide direction for the Association. The bottom line is that we’ve had many successes in 2013 and I’d like to thank the hard work and perseverance of the AGA staff and the support of the AGA Board and membership. I personally look forward to 2014 with great anticipation about what we can collectively accomplish and promise you that we will continue pursuing the IBB plan goals with the tenacity of Louis Pasteur. In closing, Merry Christmas and may 2014 bring many blessings to you and your families. FFF

Seven Candidates Vie for AGA Board of Directors THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association nominating committee recommends the following seven candidates to fill the five open positions on the AGA Board of Directors. Other nominations may be accepted from the floor during the annual meeting. • Jim Dobson, Oklahoma • Emily Griffiths, Indiana • Bob Hart, Kansas (seeking re-election) • David Martin, Arkansas (seeking re-election) • Ron Russell, Wisconsin • Walter Teeter, North Carolina • Grant Thayer, Colorado (seeking re-election The election for the Board of Directors will take place during the AGA annual meeting on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 3:00 p.m., during the 2014 AGA Impacting

Jim Dobson, Oklahoma As a breeder with quite literally life-long roots in the Gelbvieh breed, it is an honor to be nominated to serve on the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors. My brother Jim Dobson John and I own and operate Dobson Ranch located in Kaw City, Okla. Dobson Ranch is AGA member #1. We raise purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle, with the commercial cattleman in mind. We believe in the power of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics and what they offer the cow-calf producer: added pounds and maternal productivity. The cow herd currently consists of 400 head. We sell bulls and females privately year round, as well as through a few consignment sales including the Black Hills Stock Show and the Oklahoma Sooner Select Sale. I am a member of the Oklahoma Gelbvieh Association and currently serve on the OGA Board of Directors. Like all of my siblings, I attended Oklahoma State University. Dobson Ranch has a long-standing history in the Gelbvieh breed, and I am proud to continue to build that legacy with my wife Annie and daughter Mary Kate. My member number in the American Gelbvieh Junior

the Beef Business: It Starts with Membership Annual Convention. Members in attendance are encouraged to pick up their ballots at the Annual Convention 30 minutes prior to the annual meeting. Any member who is unable to attend the AGA annual meeting may request an absentee ballot by phone, email, mail or fax for election of directors. In order to obtain an absentee ballot, a member must submit his or her application to the American Gelbvieh Association office not more than 60 days (November 11, 2013) nor less than 10 days (December 31, 2013) prior to the annual meeting, and must be in good standing with the Association at least sixty (60) days prior to the annual meeting. Ballots must be returned to the AGA office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2014 to be counted at the annual meeting on Saturday, January 11, 2014.

Association is also #1, and I look forward to seeing my daughter show at a future AGJA Junior Classic. Growing up in the Gelbvieh Association, I have a true passion for Gelbvieh cattle and a strong desire to see the breed grow and prosper. As a founding ranch, it is fun to look back at the history of the Gelbvieh breed and see how far it has come since its initial beginnings in Oklahoma. However, it is not about the past, it’s about the future. I truly believe Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle have a unique opportunity to gain market share in the beef business as the U.S. cow herd begins to rebuild. Commercial cattlemen and women have begun to recognize what we have long since known, the maternal traits of Gelbvieh and Balancer females are second to none. It is up to us to take advantage of this growing demand for quality Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics.

Emily Griffiths, Indiana I am a third generation cattlemen and along with my parents, Carl and Rebecca, operate 3G Ranch in Kendallville, Ind. Our primary income has always been through the sale of purebred Continental bulls to commercial cattlemen

both private treaty and through consignment sales. We extensively use the show ring as a marketing tool to promote our operation, but our purebred cattle are still expected to perform under commercial conditions. Currently, I am employed as the director of public relations at the Ohio Beef Council and Ohio Cattlemen’s Association where I have the unique opportunity to work with every segment of the beef community. From communicating with producers about Beef Quality Assurance to keeping beef on the menu with foodservice purveyors and having the beef conversation with consumers, I get the chance to wake up every day with the goal of keeping beef the protein of choice in the meat case. I have had a lifelong interest in developing my knowledge of beef that predates my current career path. I have spent time from conception to consumption in industry activities not only continuing to develop my own breeding program but seeking out real work experiences. This includes working at a bull stud collecting and freezing semen, and time spent fabricating retail cuts at our local butcher shop. I was also active at the junior level serving on the American Gelbvieh Junior Association Board of Directors and participating in numerous AGJA Classics. I also had the privilege of being an All-American collegiate judging team member at Black Hawk East College and Western Illinois University, both of which I am a graduate. Regardless of how much I wish to continue to learn and contribute to the beef industry, there is one thing I will never forget; my continued passion to remain a lifelong Gelbvieh seedstock producer and advocate. I owe that to the breed that has given me so much and has become woven into the fabric of the person that I am today. As seedstock and cow-calf producers, we always focus on the next year’s calf crop because our bottom-line depends on it, however we must not lose sight of the opportunity to continue cultivating the next generation of Gelbvieh producers, as the future of our breed depends on it. I firmly believe that in order for a breed to remain viable they must continue to embrace the youth of their breed. I appreciate the nominating committee valuing the next generation’s participation and opinion, and I hope your vote reflects the same vision.

Bob Hart, Kansas It is an honor to be nominated for a second term on the AGA Board. Serving on the Board for the past three years has been a learning experience on how a breed association works on a daily Bob Hart basis. In addition to addressing current member needs, the Board and staff have developed a visionary and forward-thinking five-year strategic plan to aid in positioning the breed for the future. Many of the decisions we made were tough but offer bold moves that I feel will benefit membership for today and years to come. A little about myself and my cattle operation: I think you would classify me as a small breeder. Our home farm consists of 38 acres and is located within the city limits of Kansas City, Kan. The farm has been in my family for over 80 years. In 1996, my wife and I decided to convert the farm back to a small cattle operation. We researched the different breeds and chose Gelbvieh because of the breed’s excellent disposition. That fall we bought our first four Gelbvieh animals. Today, we run 38 purebred females, three Balancer® females, and one Red Angus on 105 acres. All are red except for one black donor. Our acreage is within the city limits, which adds many challenges unique to an urban setting. We have built our herd by flushing proven cows. Currently, we have seven donors and implant from 10 to 20 embryos a year. Our bulls are marketed through Seedstock Plus and females through state association sales and private treaty. Last year we sold our cattle to stock operations in eight different states across the country. In addition to the AGA Board, I also serve as treasurer of the Heart of America Gelbvieh Association. I urge you take the time to vote for your national Board. If you can’t attend the Annual Convention, please request an absentee ballot so you can be a part in determining the future of our association. You have several highly qualified nominees to choose from. Please review them all. Then, if you feel I could continue to make a positive contribution to our national Board, I would appreciate your support and vote. It would be an honor to serve you for another three years.

David Martin, Arkansas My name is David Martin and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to serve as a Director for the past three years. My term on the Board has given me valuable insight David Martin into our association and the future beef industry. It is truly an honor to be re-nominated and I would greatly appreciate your consideration to continue working for the good of the Association. To tell you a little about myself, I live near Judsonia, Ark., with my wife, Rita, and our family. We maintain 75-100 Gelbvieh and Balancer® pairs and sell bulls private treaty into six states. Family is important to our farm. Each of our daughters and their husbands play a specific role. We were very honored to be named as our county farm family of the year in 2012. I currently work for Land O’ Lakes Purina Feed as an account manager. I grew up on a Hereford operation before attending Arkansas State University (ASU). I earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and was a member of the livestock and dairy judging teams. Upon graduation, I became the farm manager for ASU between 1977-80. Then in 1980, I became the ranch manager for Porter Rodgers Farms. There, I was responsible for 1,200 to 2,000 head of cattle including purebred Santa Gertrudis, commercial cow-calf, stocker and feedlot programs. It was during this time that I became involved with the Gelbvieh breed. Gelbvieh impressed me with their milk, fertility, and performance compared to the other breeds in our commercial herd. In 1990, the ranch dispersed and I purchased 12 half-blood Gelbvieh females for my foundation. Today, my family has about 100 head of purebred Gelbvieh. I am proud to say that my family has been in the seedstock business for more than 70 years. My philosophy has always been to raise cattle that are functional, efficient, and that fit the commercial industry. Additionally, my three daughters, Rebecca, Dana, and Rasha were active in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. Our family has been going to the Junior Classic each summer since 2000. I believe that the AGJA is one of the best youth programs offered. The AGJA

is the foundation of tomorrow’s AGA and I believe in supporting the AGJA to the fullest. I look forward to seeing my grandchildren as active AGJA members. I recognize and honor the responsibility of the AGA Board. I offer experience in managing budgets, developing business plans, marketing, and working with people in our industry. I believe that a director should always put the good of the association before his personal wants or desires. As the AGA prepares its longrange plan, I believe this philosophy is more important than ever. My goal is to see the Gelbvieh breed reach its fullest potential and would very much appreciate the opportunity to continue serving you on the AGA Board of Directors.

Ron Russell, Wisconsin I appreciate the opportunity to run for the AGA Board. We began our involvement with Gelbvieh cattle in the 1990s. My wife, Alicia and I own Russell Family Livestock near Brooklyn, Wisc. Along with our children; Ron Russell Jason, Chad, Anila, Lydia, Kajal and Girish, the focus has been on cattle which combine form and function. Over the years we have attended many junior national programs, in addition to being very active in local, county and state livestock programs, primarily showing cattle and promoting Gelbvieh. We market bulls and females through private sales, Iowa Beef Expo, and Minnesota Beef Showcase. Additionally, we send a select set of bulls to Midland Bull Test each year to increase our market and evaluate our genetics in a competitive bull development environment. Our herd is entirely AI bred and our ET program is continuing to expand. My exposure and affinity for Gelbvieh cattle began when I was a student at the University of Missouri on the livestock judging team in 1979. Gelbvieh cattle struck me as moderate, functional and “data-driven” amongst other breeds who were striving for size at all costs. After my education at Mizzou, I worked at one of MU’s beef research facilities before taking my current position with the University of Wisconsin – Madison in the Animal Sciences department, specifically in Meat Science and Muscle Biology. My current position of

Senior Lecturer affords me the opportunity to teach in the areas of animal growth and development, meat science and livestock evaluation. I’ve been coaching the UW livestock and meat evaluation team since my arrival. My hope is to help keep the Gelbvieh breed viable and relevant in today’s industry. As breeders we need to ask ourselves: “Are we being visible and vigilant?” I truly want the question, “What is a Gelbvieh?” to become history. This breed has had tremendous leadership in the past and I would appreciate the opportunity to help it continue moving forward into the future.

Walter Teeter, North Carolina I appreciate the opportunity to run for the AGA Board of Directors. I am a third generation cattle producer. I grew up on a 400 mama cow Hereford operation that produced two national champion Walter Teeter bulls. Together with my wife Lee and my sons Garrett, Justin, and Austin we operate Green Hills Gelbvieh. We run about 300 head of Gelbvieh, Balancer®, and commercial cattle. We bought our first Gelbvieh cow in 1986, the same year Lee and I married. We have been members of the AGA since 1989. We were members of the Southeast Gelbvieh Association and charter members of the North Carolina Gelbvieh Association. I have served as a board member and president of that organization. My kids have shown Gelbvieh cattle since Garrett and Justin were 5 and 4. We have helped organize and hold AGJA regional and national shows, so I understand that it takes lots of work to accomplish goals. I graduated from North Carolina State University with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics. I am C.E.O. of Republic Refrigeration, Inc., which is one of the largest industrial refrigeration contracting companies in North America. It has completed projects in 44 states, Canada, and Mexico, and employs more than 240 people. I am currently on the Board of Directors of IIAR , which is a trade group that represents ammonia refrigeration users. I have been a Deacon and Elder in my church. I understand that to be successful you need to work together, determine what you do well, and do it better than the competition. To move our breed forward I feel

we need to concentrate on our strengths and promote them. It would be an honor to serve on the board and I would appreciate your vote.

Grant Thayer, Colorado Grant Thayer has been dedicated to the breeding and improvement of Gelbvieh cattle for over 30 years. Beginning with one purebred bull used on crossbred cows, he now has over 400 cows with Gelbvieh or Balancer® calves, most of which will be registered.

Grant Thayer

He and his wife of over 40 years, Patti, are very proud of their two children. Their son Grant has degrees in geology, business and finance from the University of Colorado and the University of Denver. He is currently a management consultant for a large firm. Their daughter Heidi is a graduate of the University of Colorado. Heidi and her husband Kevin are the parents of two boys, Ben and Max. Grant and Patti love these grandchildren! Grant, an engineer, also has a Master’s degree in business. Although raising Gelbvieh cattle is his passion Grant has spent over 35 years in various technical and management positions in the petroleum industry. His last position was as CEO of a company owning a portfolio of industry assets. In recent years the majority of his time has been focused on the ownership and management of the Jumping Cow Gelbvieh Ranch. It is Grant’s strong belief that Gelbvieh breeders, as a group, raise the most useful livestock in the cattle industry. Current economic outlook and an ongoing drought have some buyers of purebred and commercial cattle reluctant to pay adequately for the genetics we provide. Gelbvieh breeders must remain enthusiastic promoters of our breed and programs to successfully market the cattle that each of us has bred and improved over the years. Grant has served on various committees and strongly believes in the committee system which includes all members in the decision making process. He seeks your consideration to return as a member of the AGA Board of Directors and will be honored if given the opportunity to continue to serve fellow Gelbvieh enthusiasts.

BREED PROMOTION MINUTE

Take Notice Opportunities are available to those in the cattle business who take notice. As the cow herd begins to expand, so will the demand for quality bulls. Gain market share by making your program stand out with your genetics, management, and marketing. By Frank Padilla TIMES ARE PRETTY good in the cattle business. All one has to do is to read market reports covering the various sectors of the cattle industry to see record high prices. Feeder cattle continue to see prices never obtained by producers, while fed cattle set all-time highs leaving the feed yards in the month of October. With the drop in grain and forage prices, feed input costs are lower. No doubt the impact that weather has had for producers in many areas of the country has been devastating. Drought and floods in regions as well as the October blizzard that swept the high plains have caused tremendous hardship for those producers. Yet those parts of the country with adequate forage are seeing producers aggressively stepping to the plate to buy cattle. Now is the time to begin thinking about the future of your operation. Culling and then replacing under-performing females while the market price is good is never a bad idea. The bred female market continues to be the best buy in the cattle sector at this time. Participation in local, regional and national meetings provide opportunity for learning and interacting with educators and producers. The Beef Improvement Federation, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Range Beef Cow Symposium as well as the American Gelbvieh Association all host meetings that seedstock producers should consider attending. Learning and being informed allows a producer to be an informational resource for buyers. It is to your benefit to show up. The cattle business is good. ANIMAL NUTRITION Vitamins: Small Requirements with Big Benefits prior to the 20th century, scurvy was a terrible disease that affected sailors who were on ships at sea for a longer period than perishable fruits and vegetables would last. Leading to the dubbing of sailors as “limeys,” it was discovered that citrus fruits had the ability to prevent scurvy, as they provided the vitamin C that had been previously deficient in the diet.

While a small portion of a cow’s diet, Vitamins A, D, and E are essential to the productivity and overall health of a beef animal. A good mineral program, which included these vitamins, improves the long-term performance of the cow herd. By Kyle Weldon FROM COLORFUL VITAMIN drinks in convenience stores to commercials on TV explaining the importance of taking a daily vitamin in order to “support bone strength” and “improve cell health with antioxidants,” vitamins are all around us on a daily basis. Why did mom tell us to make sure to eat our vegetables and fruits when we were growing up? She didn’t have to be a nutritionist to know that they are the best sources of vitamins and minerals to support healthy growth! A brief tale about vitamins: For much of the time

24 | DECEMBER 2013

Now while the above history pertains to humans, vitamin’s role in health and wellness are very real for all mammals. That being said, how do we approach vitamin nutrition in our cattle? We know how important they are in helping us be active and illness free, but are they really all that big of deal for our cows and their calves? Hopefully this review of vitamins will answer that question for you, and help you as you make your supplementation decisions in the future.

Vitamin Overview Vitamins are required in small amounts compared to the complete nutritional requirements of an animal. However, they are critical to the health and top performance of the animal. They are essential for the development and growth of young animals, and are necessary for maintaining tissues, numerous metabolic activities, immunity, and fertility in mature animals. Vitamins can be divided into two classes: fat-soluble (A, D, E, and K) and water-soluble (B, thiamin, niacin, and choline), depending upon their make-up and function. Bacteria in the rumen have the ability to make water-soluble vitamins as well as vitamin K in sufficient quantities to meet the animal’s requirements, thus supplementation of these vitamins is generally not necessary for cattle. Although, immature or stressed calves may require supplementation of B vitamins in certain situations as there is the potential that they lack sufficient microbial synthesis of these vitamins. B vitamins are important for immune response in a stressed animal. Therefore, in situations where calves have reduced intakes due to stress or illness, supplementation of these vitamins may be necessary. In most cases however, vitamin needs of cattle can be narrowed to A, D, and E and are the ones that we will focus on for this review. These three vitamins are often supplemented by their inclusion into commercially available mineral mixes.

supplementation is very important to meet the animal’s requirements. Functions: Vitamin A is fundamental for normal vision, growth and proper bone development, reproduction, skin and hoof maintenance, and in enhancing immune response. Deficiencies: In most cases, the first noticeable sign of vitamin A deficiency is night blindness. Other implications of deficiency are reduced appetite, rough hair coat, fluid accumulation in the brisket and joints, lowered conception rates and abortions.

Vitamin D Cattle synthesize vitamin D when they are exposed to sunlight or fed sun-cured forages; therefore, they rarely require vitamin D supplementation. However, vitamin D is so important for bone maintenance and development, adequate levels of it are essential in the animal’s diet. Two situations that might lead to vitamin D deficiencies would be if cattle were housed indoors for long periods of time and fed a ration high in grains, or if cattle consumed very poor quality forage during long periods

Vitamin A Vitamin A does not occur in plant materials, but its precursor, carotene, a pigment in the plant giving it its green color, can be converted into vitamin A in the animal’s small intestine. Vitamin A is stored in the liver at high levels, and can help to prevent deficiency in times when consumption of carotene is low. Lush immature plants have high concentrations of carotene, but these levels reduce in the plant as it matures, thus vitamin A

with little to no sunlight. Functions: Vitamin D is critical for bone growth and maintenance as it is directly involved in calcium and phosphorus absorption. Normal mineralization of bone and mobilization of calcium from the bone both require vitamin D. It has also been shown to play a key role in immune cell function. Deficiencies: Rickets in calves is the most defined sign of vitamin D deficiency. This is caused by a failure of the bones to use calcium and phosphorous normally. Older

animals may develop weak bones that can be easily fractured if vitamin D is deficient. Some other clinical signs of vitamin D deficiency include decreased appetite, labored breathing, and weakness.

Vitamin E Vitamin E occurs naturally in feedstuffs as α-tocopherol. Its requirements depend on concentrations of antioxidants and selenium, which vitamin E works closely with, in the diet. Vitamin E is not stored in large quantities in the body. Functions: Vitamin E has an important function as an antioxidant in the body, and a free radical scavenger in the immune system. In this role, it serves to reduce the damages to other vitamins and essential fatty acids, both in the digestive tract and after they are absorbed. It also functions in the maintenance of structural and functional integrity of skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and peripheral vascular system. Deficiencies: Vitamin E works in concert with selenium. Signs of deficiencies in young calves are characteristic of white-muscle disease including general muscular dystrophy, weak leg muscles, crossover walking, and impaired suckling ability.

Summary Vitamins make up a small part of a cow’s diet, but they play a crucial role in the productivity and health of the beef animal. Hopefully having a better understanding of why vitamins A, D, and E are added to mineral mixes and how they impact production provides yet another tool to consider when managing and setting production goals. Investing in a good mineral program containing proper vitamin levels will pay dividends in the long-term performance of the cow herd as well as the economic returns to the operation. FFF

JUNIOR VOICE

It Starts with YOUR Junior Membership animals to provide a safe, wholesome food supply that is rich in protein and many other essential nutrients.

No matter what age you are, there is always a way to get involved in the Gelbvieh breed! Grace Hammer

Raise Funds

SITTING DOWN AND opening up the Gelbvieh World, I flipped to the pages focusing on the 2014 National Convention. I pondered the theme of this year’s convention, “Impacting the Beef Business: It Starts with Membership.” Here is a list of ideas to help junior members to become a more integral part in our breed.

Promotion Tell others about Gelbvieh cattle and the great traits that our breed has to offer. Social media is a great way to promote our breed to others by using sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. As a showman, you can advertise Gelbvieh cattle through county, regional, state and even national shows. The AGA office also has free handouts that are very useful in presentations and promotion to 4-H, FFA, and other clubs.

Much of the Junior Classic and regional shows for the AGJA are funded largely by the Donation Heifer program. Make it a goal to sell raffle tickets to both Gelbvieh and non-Gelbvieh breeders. Every few add up! Another way to help raise funds is through the collection of can tabs. The AGJA has been collecting can tabs for several years as a service project, and recently the proceeds from these tabs have been donated to the AllAmerican Beef Battalion.

Participate Get involved in all that you can. Participating in the various contests at the Junior Classic is a great way to learn not only just about the Gelbvieh breed, but about the agriculture industry as a whole. I challenge each junior to try a new contest every year- and who knows, maybe it will end up being your favorite.

Take time to talk to the “city folk” as they pass through the barns at large shows and promote what we as cattlemen do. “Agvocacy” helps us to be a positive voice for agriculture while educating people on the practices of caring for the

Take an active part and be a positive voice for the Gelbvieh breed and beef industry, help support the activities that make our organization unique, and increase your knowledge so that you will be asset to our industry— It starts with YOUR membership. FFF

COMMUNICATION NOTE Production Schedule Gelbvieh World The Profit Picture

Reaching Commercial Producers By using a combination of print, digital, video, and personal marketing efforts, the American Gelbvieh Association has expanded its reach of promoting Gelbvieh and Balancer® to commercial customers. By Jennifer Scharpe ONE OF THE key principles of the American Gelbvieh Association’s Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan is to promote Gelbvieh, Balancer® and crossbreeding merits to the commercial cow-calf and feedlot sectors by increasing the promotion reach by five percent per year for the next three years. At the close of the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the expectations for this goal were not just met, they were exceeded.

12 publications in late October and early November. The second insert will hit in January. We have increased the circulation of the insert by more than five percent. If you would like to send copies of the inserts to your customers, there is a small amount of extras available to members free of charge for this purpose. Mailing the insert along with a short personal note can go a long ways towards retaining your customers.

In advertising and marketing terms, reach refers to the total number of people who were exposed to, at least once, a message through any form of media during a given period of time. The AGA uses many forms of media to communicate our message including print, digital, video, and personal communication. Combining all the AGA promotion efforts for the 2012-2013 year, the AGA expanded its promotion reach by more than 20 percent on average; some outlets such as YouTube views were 71 percent greater. By maximizing promotion dollars for the 2013-2014 year, we look to continue to exceed this goal.

The 2013-2014 promotion efforts also include expanded print advertising in national publications. Look for the Gelbvieh and Balancer ads in BEEF Magazine and Working Ranch Magazine this winter and spring. These print ads will expand our reach by 67 percent when compared to the previous year and will help keep a Gelbvieh presence to a national audience.

The first of the two “Add Pounds. Add Profit.” inserts hit 34 | DECEMBER 2013

Other promotion efforts include expanding our banner ads to national beef publication websites, continuing to develop promotional and educational videos, and utilizing the new AGA booth at national and regional trade shows. As well, we have increased the circulation of Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture. FFF

AGA Committee Web-Meeting Agendas All Committee Meetings Held in December Via Free Web-Meeting THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association committees play a vital role in the development and implementation of AGA programs, services and policies. An active committee process is one of the core grass roots values of the AGA. All AGA committee meetings will be held in December via web-meeting prior to the annual convention. There will be no committee meetings at convention. Instead, all members are invited and encouraged to participate in the committee webmeetings from the comfort of their own home. All meetings will be held the week of December 9-19, 2013. To participate, members only need an Internet connection. Web-meetings can be accessed via a URL

link from a home computer, tablet or mobile device. This is a free service to members and no special software is required. A tele-conference option is also available. Through the web-meetings, members will be able to listen and watch presentations, participate in discussions, make motions and vote. The core functions and value of the committees – making recommendations to the Board of Directors – will not change. The only change is the venue. More details and instructions on how to access the web-meetings will be provided to members via the Enewsletter as well as on the AGA website. Please take note of the committee meeting dates, times and agendas.

Ring of Gold The American Gelbvieh Association established the Ring of Gold program to encourage breeders to participate in livestock shows and to honor the top animals shown at the conclusion of a show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve champions, as well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown in each qualified show. It is the responsibility of state Gelbvieh associations to send the official show results to the American Gelbvieh Association for inclusion in Ring of Gold points. Send results to Dana Stewart, AGA director of member services at danas@gelbvieh.org.
