NOT YOUR GRANDPA’S GELBVIEH VIEW FROM THE BOARD BY LORI MAUDE

I

have been in and around the Gelbvieh breed for more than 20 years. A lot of things have changed about these cattle without losing what the breed truly does well. In conversations with Gelbvieh members that have been around the breed longer than me, they share the same sentiment and so many say, “these aren’t the Gelbvieh cattle their grandpa remembers.”

the cattle have been in the United States, we have cleaned up the front ends, reduced the extra leather in the head and neck area, refined the overall look of the cattle and removed the horns. They have deep soggy centers, level toplines and plenty of muscle and style. •

Feet and legs: European breeds had some leg structure issues when they were imported. Gelbvieh breeders have focused hard on improving the feet and legs. Today’s Gelbvieh cattle have feet and legs that are correct and functional in the real world.

Quality grades: There are some that say that Gelbvieh-influenced cattle don’t grade. But there are reams of close-outs in recent years that debunk that myth. The 2023 American Gelbvieh Association Commercial Producer of the Year, Dallas Burton of South Dakota,

WHAT HAS CHANGED •

Birth weight and calving ease: Like many European breeds when they were introduced to the United States, the birth weights were too big. Our breeders have consistently selected to lower birth weights and improve calving ease. In my mind, the most reliable EPD we have is Calving Ease Direct. Overall phenotype: These aren’t the big, raw-boned, ugly-headed Gelbvieh cattle that came over from Germany. Over the 50 plus years

4 | FEBRUARY 2024

feeds out his steers and cull heifers every year. In 2022, his cattle went 97% USDA Prime or Choice, and virtually all yield grades 1-3. And his most recent load of calves graded 100% USDA Prime and Choice with 50% grading USDA Prime. That is what Gelbvieh-sired cattle can do in the feedyard. For too long feedyards have needed to put two implants in those straight Angus cattle they are feeding to get the growth and performance that can happen with Gelbvieh genetics. With Gelbvieh, you don’t need two implants to get growth, performance and feed efficiency, and the cattle will grade like you need them to. •

Udder quality: Gelbvieh cattle milk exceptionally well, and breeders know how important udder and teat structure is for the longevity of a cow that milks above average. With a focus and strict culling on

FEATURE | EDITORIAL | NEWS udder and teat quality, Gelbvieh has made great progress in this. •

Mature cow size: According to the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), Gelbvieh has the smallest mature cow weight of the major beef breeds. Big cows can cost a lot to maintain—ask anyone who has gone through a drought recently or has ever hauled water to their cowherd.

WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED •

Fertility: USMARC data has demonstrated that Gelbvieh-sired females continue to wean more pounds per cow exposed than any other breed. Anyone who has kept a set of Gelbvieh-influenced heifers around as replacements can tell you they begin cycling earlier than many breeds. Even in challenging

6 | FEBRUARY 2024

environmental conditions, I am always in awe of the breed-back on Gelbvieh-sired heifers and cows. •

Weaning Weights: We still sell calves by the pound and our commercial customers certainly sell calves by the pound at weaning. While we reduced mature cow size, we have still been able to maintain and slightly increase the weaning weight performance of Gelbvieh cattle. Not every breed can say that! Docility: Overall, Gelbvieh cattle are known for their docility. When we first transitioned to Gelbvieh bulls more than 20 years ago, that was the first thing my dad noticed. The weaned heifers came to the bunk so quickly and they were so quiet to be around. There is a genetic influence for docility, but there is also influence for how cattle

are handled. We fell in love with Gelbvieh disposition because at the time I had a young niece and nephew helping around the cattle and it made it safer for everyone. I joke that now we need the docility because the ones handling the cattle are old—that would be my 80-yearold dad, my 74-year-old mom and me. I have the philosophy that every Angus, Red Angus and Hereford cow needs a little Gelbvieh in her life. The benefits of crossbreeding are long documented and using Gelbvieh and Balancer® bulls on a straight British cow is going to pay you some big dividends. Today’s Gelbvieh are not your Grandpa’s Gelbvieh. Give them a try again—I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

OVER THE FENCE WITH ALAN GLOR BY SYDNEY WELLSANDT

A

lan and Janet Glor, along with assistance from their farm hand, Curtis, and their adult children and grandchildren, operate Glor Farms in Bolivar, Missouri. The cattle business wasn’t always where Alan saw himself ending up. He went to school in Bolivar, Missouri, and spent the weekends with his dad on a small ranch in Urbana, Missouri, just a few miles from where he is located now. Alan pursued a degree in agriculture business at Missouri State University. While at Missouri State he also met the love of his life, Janet. They were married in 1983. After graduation, Alan served six years as an Army officer. During that time, he was in Desert Shield and Desert Storm with the 101 Airborne Division and spent time in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Upon returning home, he became a financial advisor. His whole family had been in the farming business, and initially, he thought he didn’t want anything to do with it. He knew the risks and expenses were high and the margins were low. When asked what was one lesson he brought home from serving in the Army, Alan responded that his

8 | FEBRUARY 2024

experience taught him to dig deep. In life, there are a lot of prospectors but not as many minors. He talked about how it’s crucial to dig deep in ourselves, pursue our dreams, and look to God for answers and guidance along the way. Alan believes it was a calling from God to help feed the world that led him back to where he started and to where he is today. Land had become available in the area, and he felt that the opportunity pursued him and his family, and soon after, everything fell into place.

WHAT DOES YOUR OPERATION LOOK LIKE TODAY? I am still a financial advisor during the day. My wife, Janet, helps on the farm daily, and our children help us with large projects. We have five different farms, where we run about 200 head of Balancer® cows. We take the calves to weaning, wean them for 60 days, and then sell them through Superior

Livestock Auction and the American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) Feeder Finder program. Both programs have worked very well for us.

WHAT MADE YOU START USING GELBVIEH AND BALANCER GENETICS, AND WHAT BENEFITS HAVE YOU SEEN? Growing up, we had various breeds through the years. When I started looking for cows, a buddy of mine said they were selling third-period Gelbvieh heifers at the Humansville sale barn and at the time, I didn’t even know what they were. I went up to the sale, looked at them, read about them, and fell in love with them right then and that’s been almost 25 years ago. We started with some good Gelbvieh heifers out of Judd Ranch Inc. bulls, and we never looked back. Since then, we have made those Gelbvieh into Balancers. We like Balancers a lot since they seem to stay in the herd longer, feed out very well, and have good growth. When it comes to Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics, the bottom line is growth. We weaned a set of steers this year and in the first 30 days had several gain 75-100 pounds, which to me is phenomenal. However, it is not only the growth, as they are great mothers, and most have great docility which makes them easy to work around. Between the maternal benefits and the growth, it’s what keeps us here.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS MOVING FORWARD FOR YOUR FAMILY AND OPERATION? 10 | FEBRUARY 2024

As I tell my wife every day, I would like to keep doing this for the next 20 years. Retirement means a lot of things to a lot of different people, but for me, it means being active and having a purpose. I feel like feeding the world is a pretty good purpose. My kids help around the farm, but I don’t know if they will follow in our footsteps. However, for our lifetime, we will continue to do what we are doing. Looking forward, I have considered taking my steers all the way through the feedlot process. I would like to try that sometime because we have the genetics, and we continue to buy the absolute best bulls we can find. I would like to take them through the feedlot to further measure where we are and see what additional improvements we can make.

Originally, I went to local sale barns but felt that I wasn’t being paid for our genetics. I wanted to get away from that and landed on Superior Livestock Auction since I had a pot load of calves available at a time. Last year, Tom Strahm, AGA commercial marketing director, approached me and suggested I use the AGA Feeder Finder program. Tom has been great to work with, and we are very happy with the results it has given us while being in the second year of its use. Next year, we are going to move to the Balancer® Edge program. We also sell several heifers off the farm from time to time.

WHAT ARE THE TRAITS YOU WHAT LEGACY ARE YOU LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING HOPING TO CREATE IN YOUR LIFETIME AND THROUGH BULLS? When selecting bulls, the main traits I YOUR OPERATION? look at are yearling weights and weaning weights, marbling, and average daily gain. When I’m calving heifers I also look at calving ease and birth weight EPDs for the calving ease bulls. Looking at what we are doing right now as well as looking forward to the future, these traits are going to be very important to keep us viable in the beef industry.

WHAT STRATEGIES DO YOU USE TO MARKET YOUR CATTLE?

I would like to let as many people as possible know how great Gelbvieh and Balancers are and the amount of influence they can have on the average cowherd. I tell everybody from Montana to Florida how great these Gelbviehs and Balancers are and how they can improve their herd by using some of that influence.

WHO WE ARE

WHAT IS A BALANCER ®?

The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is dedicated to recording and promoting Gelbvieh, Balancer and Gelbvieh-influenced cattle, while providing members and their customers programs and services to advance the breed. The AGA consists of approximately 1,100 members with a registry database that contains over one million animals including approximately 40,000 currently active Gelbvieh, Balancer® and Gelbvieh-influenced cows.

Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences. The American Gelbvieh Association was the first beef cattle breed to recognize and include a hybrid animal as registered stock.

THE STRENGTHS OF GELBVIEH The Gelbvieh breed is well known throughout the industry for its maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business.

AGA STAFF

FAST FACTS

With the high costs associated with the development or purchase of replacement females, sustained production in a herd is essential. Gelbvieh females are proven to stay in the herd longer. U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) data shows Gelbvieh females have the most moderate mature cow size of the seven major beef breeds. This reduced mature cow size allows for puberty to be reached at an earlier age, which leads to calving earlier in the season and producing a heavier calf at a younger age. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle excel in traits such as growth, stayability and productivity. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in a crossbreeding program can help increase the profitability of an operation. See additional pounds and added profit through more efficiency and greater longevity of cows as well as heavier, faster-gaining feeder cattle.

Balancer animals are 25% to 75% Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry, including commercial cow/calf operations and on the rail.

HOW DO GELBVIEH AND BALANCER® CROSSBRED FEMALES PERFORM BETTER? It’s all in the heterosis, or hybrid vigor, described as the increase in performance of the crossbred animal compared to the average of the straight-bred parents. Heterosis impacts traits with low heritability, e.g., reproduction. Producers with crossbred cows can see a higher percentage of their cowherd breed back on the first cycle due to maternal heterosis.

INDIVIDUAL HETEROSIS Individual heterosis is the improvement in performance by the individual crossbred animal above the average of its parents. Increased calf livability, weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass traits are examples of individual heterosis in crossbred calves.

Maternal heterosis leads to the combined improvement in traits from the dam that cause increases in the performance of her and her progeny. Examples of maternal heterosis in a beef cow include younger age at puberty, increased calving rate, increased survival of her calf to weaning, longevity and pounds of calf produced in her lifetime.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS FOR COMMERCIAL PRODUCERS FEEDER FINDER Feeder Finder is a free email service offered by the AGA to promote and assist in marketing load lots of Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced feeder cattle. Producers who have cattle to sell are encouraged to fill out the online form or contact the AGA staff to submit information about their cattle.

QUALITY DRIVES CARCASS VALUE BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

C

attlemen’s Profit Roundup attendees were joined by Dr. Scott Howard, Meyer Natural Foods director of operations, for his presentation titled “Quality Drivers and Value Determination in the Beef Packing Sector.” Howard began his presentation by reviewing the current state of factors influential to quality and carcass value which will include quality grade, yield grade and weight. Quality grade is influenced by marbling, maturity and chill time. “At Meyer Natural Foods, we have increased quality grade by five percent through implementing a weekend chill,” said Howard. Yield grade is influenced by the fat thickness opposite the ribeye, ribeye area and kidney, pelvic and heart fat. The fat thickness opposite the ribeye measurement calculates the preliminary yield grade of the carcass and is adjusted for fat elsewhere on the carcass. Ribeye area only accounts for five percent variation in the yield grade equation. The ribeye area is adjusted relative to the hot carcass weight. Additionally, kidney, pelvic and heart fat is included in the adjusted yield grade and is expressed as a percentage of the hot carcass weight. Hot carcass weight greatly influences packer profitability through their fixed

costs of labor, packaging, storage and water. Moving forward, carcass value determination will include marbling, product differentiation, yield and carcass weight. “Product differentiation is very important because the packer has to be able to sell the entire carcass, not just the ribeyes and strips,” explained Howard.

produce an extremely tender product. Mexican-origin cattle are high-yielding but are low-marbling. Whereas, native beef breeds have the best chance at qualifying for premium programs, they do have an increased potential for excess fat. Carcass value determination is highly driven by quality so it is important for producers to not only raise cattle that yield, but the cattle must also grade to capitalize on carcass premiums as quality is the largest driver of beef profitability.

Howard also discussed potential changes to the yield grade equation that will move away from the current four variable equation and focus more on yield optimization through carcass composition. The two most dynamic variables of carcass composition are bone and fat which need a larger importance in the yield grade equation. For all your AI needs: Additionally, traceability will play a larger role in yield calculations as new technology allows the packer to track each cut back to the original carcass to increase the accuracy of the yield equation.

Breed type will continue to be a large indicator of carcass value determination as they each have their strengths and shortcomings. The beef on dairy space is gaining market share as the carcasses are very lean and

LEARNING FROM THE DATA BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S. the results to reflect the state of the industry at the time.

The U.S. cattle industry cannot expect improvements in prices for its products or by-products when ‘quality’ doesn’t warrant such increases,” as stated in the 1991 National Beef Quality Audit. The 2022 National Beef Quality Audit survey results were presented during Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup at the 53rd Annual American Gelbvieh Association National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska, by Michaela Clowser, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association director of producer education. The National Beef Quality Audit focuses on the physical attributes of beef and beef by-products such as marbling, external fat, carcass weight and carcass blemishes. These concerns have evolved to also include food safety, sustainability, animal well-being and the disconnect between beef producers and consumers. The audit is designed to address the lost opportunities of beef production resulting in an inefficiency cost of $458 per head. The data from the 2022 National Beef Quality Audit was collected under extraordinary circumstances due to supply chain disruptions and cattle backlog from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, weather impacts such as ongoing drought across the country influenced

18 | FEBRUARY 2024

The audit is divided into two phases: interviewing buyers of beef and conducting inplant data collection. The objective of the first phases of interviews is to interview employees making cattle or beef purchasing decisions across four market sectors and secondarily related Government and Trade Organizations (GTO). The four participating sectors were packers, retailers, food service and further processors. “We always like to start out by asking what type of cattle these companies purchase. Predominately beef cattle are purchased then dairy,” explained Clowser. “This year, companies reported that they were purchasing beef x dairy cross cattle. This is the first audit that this has been reported.” The audit revealed that black-hided cattle increased to 62% from 58% in 2016 and 45% in 2000. The Holstein hide color decreased to 12.3%; confirming the industry trend of beef sires being used on dairy cattle. Study participants were asked what the term “cattle genetics” means to their company with answers concluding that genetics directly dictate the quality of the end-product. Most participants in each sector of the industry recognized that quality genetics improve the beef herd thus producing a higher-quality product for the consumer.

“When looking back at the 2016 audit, these companies associated genetics with breed and breed characteristics, so we’ve come a long way in a short amount of time about these companies seeing the importance of cattle genetics,” said Clowser. In-plant research is designed to capture data on quality and yield grade attributes and carcass defects to compare with previous audits to assess industry progress in improving quality. This research also provides a benchmark for future industry educational and research efforts. Heat stress and other environmental factors resulted in an increase of bruising, dark cutters and heart issues as well as decreased mobility. Almost 92% of cattle received a desired mobility score of one, with the animal walking easily and normally with no apparent lameness. This was a decrease from 96% in 2016 and can be attributed to larger cattle and longer time spent during transport. The 2022 NBQA displayed the highest frequency of 52.3% carcass bruising since the audits began. This increased bruising frequency should be addressed through facility and trailer design as well as cattle handler training. Nearly 93% of transportation service providers interviewed were familiar with the Beef Quality Assurance Transportation (BQAT) program and 91% are BQAT certified.

The audit revealed significant changes in the number of carcasses grading USDA Prime and Choice. In 2022, 76% graded Prime and Choice, with 7.5% Prime and 68.3% Choice. There was a 3.7% increase in carcasses grading USDA Prime between the 2016 and 2022 audits. This impressive improvement requires good genetics and management, but it starts with genetics. While the industry continues to improve the quality of the beef being produced, the quality has come with increased hot carcass weights and fat thickness, resulting

20 | FEBRUARY 2024

in an increase of Yield Grade 4 and 5 carcasses. Improved genetics can aid in maintaining the Yield Grade 3 or better of carcasses, while maintaining the marbling necessary to achieve desired quality grades. Producers are encouraged to utilize advancements in genetic selection technologies to breed for carcasses with increased eating satisfaction, uniformity and the desired end-product specifications.

The 2022 NBQA results can be utilized by those in all segments of beef production to improve current management practices and implement new innovative techniques to enhance consistency and quality of cattle and beef products through each sector of the beef supply chain.

GENETICS: THE FOUNDATION OF END PRODUCT QUALITY BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

T

he 2023 Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup concluded with Dr. Matt Spangler, University of Nebraska-Lincoln beef genetics specialist, giving his presentation titled, “Making Genetic Progress and Why End Product Quality Matters to Seedstock Producers.” Spangler began his presentation with a discussion on the simplified breeding pyramid in the beef industry. The base of the pyramid includes the packer, retailer, and consumer, which moves to commercial producers, multiplier herds, and to the top with nucleus seedstock herds. Genetics flow down the pyramid from nucleus breeders and economics flow up the pyramid. However, there is a substantial lag in both directions. Nucleus herds provide the genetics that move the breed forward and should use economic signals to influence their breeding objectives. There are many genetic components of feedlot performance and carcass traits that can be determined through EPDs. The sources of this data are records from relatives, the individual and their descendants, along with their genomic data. A genomic test on an individual can create progeny equivalents of eight

22 | FEBRUARY 2024

to 25, greatly increasing the accuracy of the specific animal’s performance. “Genetic testing can be a large expense for a seedstock operation however, genotyping is part of the cost of doing business,” explained Spangler. “A commercial producer’s business is selling phenotypes. A seedstock producer’s business is selling genotypes.” Spangler reviewed the genetic trend data from the United States Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) with attendees. While Gelbvieh does well in cutability with ribeye area and carcass weight, the breed ranks lower in marbling score compared to other major beef breeds. Understanding the strengths and weakness of the breed shows the importance of introgression which leverages the breed effects of other breeds. The Gelbvieh breed has capitalized on introgression by crossbreeding with Angus or Red Angus to produce Balancer® cattle. However, introgression does not mean within population selection can be ignored and the needs of the commercial cow base must be considered. For example, the influence of Angus marbling genetics

should not encourage seedstock producers to ignore the marbling genetics of their purebred Gelbvieh animals. Producers must select animals that meet their breeding objectives in both breeds to capitalize on breed strengths and combat their weaknesses. “Phenotypes will always be king. Genotypes alone tell us nothing, they must be coupled with phenotypes,” said Spangler. Genetic evaluations will be best if there is a continuous flow of phenotypes such as feet and leg scores, mature cow weights and carcass traits. The best way seedstock producers can tackle novel traits is to make them less novel. Quality phenotypes are important to improving the accuracy of genetic predictions of all traits, but especially carcass traits. Spangler left attendees with the take-home messages that seedstock producers must understand the profit drivers of their customers and their customers’ customers, and seedstock producers must use genetic selection tools to move the breed forward.

AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION

EPDS AND INDEXES

T

he American Gelbvieh Association publishes EPDs and Indexes for its stakeholders to use in making their breeding and purchasing decisions. Take an inside look to each EPD and Index below:

MATERNAL TRAITS Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents a more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers. Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value on this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

28 | FEBRUARY 2024

30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.

weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

CARCASS TRAITS

Docility (DOC): Is reported as a percentage, with higher numbers indicating a higher percentage of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile). Scrotal Circumference (SC): Predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animal’s male offspring.

GROWTH TRAITS Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning

Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio. Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (CREA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indictor of higher carcass quality grades. Fat (CFAT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

FEATURE | EDITORIAL | NEWS

EFFICIENCY TRAITS Dry Matter Intake (DMI): Represents the average dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pounds less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. *Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed Intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

INDEXES Indexes are tools that allow producers to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weight traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant. Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.

$Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that leads to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. Efficiency Profit Index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. Feeder Profit Index (FPI™): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.

HALL OF FAME MARK AND PATTY GOES NAMED AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION 2024 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES The American Gelbvieh Association’s 2024 Hall of Fame Inductees are Mark and Patty Goes, Odell, Neb. Pictured (left to right): Patty Goes, Mark Goes, and award presenter; Connie Tabor.

E

ach year the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) recognizes a dedicated member who has been an influential figure in the Gelbvieh breed. The 2024 AGA Hall of Fame inductees are Mark and Patty Goes of Odell, Nebraska. The Goes were presented with their award at the 53rd Annual AGA National Convention on November 30, 2023, at the Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capitol District in Omaha, Nebraska.

Goes continued youth education outside of the classroom by implementing the live carcass evaluation contest at the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic. He procured the cattle, scheduled harvest slots and explained the carcass results to the contestants. Through the creation of this contest, Goes helped connect live cattle production to the value of end-product merit and consumer demand.

In his professional career, Goes served as an instructor at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska. During his tenure, he started a Gelbvieh and Balancer® herd at the college and advocated for the breed among students by taking them to shows and sales. Many of his students have started their own Gelbvieh and Balancer herds and become members of the AGA.

Goes has served in many leadership positions throughout the beef industry. Goes is a past president of the American Gelbvieh Association, serves as an active committee member, and was the first president of the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) where he currently serves as the vice president. Additionally, Goes has served in multiple positions to

develop the strategic directions of many industry-leading organizations. “While I’ve always known Mark is a selfless individual, it has become even more obvious while serving on the AGF board with him,” said Tanner Aherin. “When an important decision is to be made, Mark is someone who wants to vet all the outcomes and how they might impact each breeder across the country – never making himself the priority. Mark is willing to challenge the group to ensure the right decision is made that is most beneficial for all people involved in the Gelbvieh breed.” Congratulations to the 2024 AGA Hall of Fame inductees, Mark and Patty Goes.

COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR

DALLAS BURTON NAMED 2023 AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR The American Gelbvieh Association named Dallas Burton, Hitchcock, S.D., the 2023 Commercial Producer of the Year. Pictured (left to right): award presenter; Blake Hojer, Dallas Burton, and Lacey Burton.

allas Burton of Hitchcock, South Dakota, was announced as the 2023 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Commercial Producer of the Year at the 53rd Annual AGA National Convention on November 30, 2023, at the Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capitol District in Omaha, Nebraska. Burton operates DWB Farms which is a cow/calf and feedlot operation consisting of approximately 400 cows. The farm was originally a dairy operation, but when Burton took charge, he chose beef cattle as the optimal path to maximize the use of the resources they had available. Burton targeted maternal and carcass traits to move the operation forward. He started keeping his own replacement

36 | FEBRUARY 2024

females when he realized the females, he was producing were far superior to what he could purchase. “We could never justify keeping our own replacements before, but after seeing the quality of our Gelbvieh-influenced females we couldn’t afford to not keep them,” said Burton. Burton has used the strengths of the Gelbvieh breed to move DWB Farms forward. He understands that single trait selection is not beneficial, but certain traits are very important. Selecting Gelbvieh genetics with carcass merit and strong maternal traits has allowed Burton to sustain profitability in both the feedlot and his cowherd.

“Dallas has put an extra emphasis on carcass traits and has seen a direct improvement in the way his cattle perform on the rail. In 2022, his cattle went 97% USDA Prime or Choice and virtually all yield grades 1-3. He monitors results and makes adjustments where needed,” said Blake Hojer, Hojer Ranch LLC. “Most notably, his most recent load of calves graded 100% USDA Prime and Choice with 50% grading USDA Prime.” Congratulations to Dallas Burton on being named the 2023 AGA Commercial Producer of the Year!

CHAMPIONS AWARDED IN EIGHTH ANNUAL AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION

SCALE AND RAIL CONTEST AND STEER CHALLENGE

T

he results are in, and champions have been awarded in the 2023 American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge. The contest harvested 62 head from nine participants, awarding $3,625 total in cash prizes and 21 banners sponsored by the AGF. The steers had an excellent overall performance with an average daily gain of 4.02 pounds per head per day and a dry matter feed conversion of 6.06:1. The AGF extends a special thank you to Kinsley Feeders of Kinsley, Kansas, and Derek Martin, for hosting and supporting the contest. The steers were harvested at National Beef in Dodge City, Kansas, and sold on the USPB grid. Thank you to Stuart Jarvis for donating the USPB delivery rights. The steers had an overall hot carcass weight of 953 pounds with 97% having a yield grade 1, 2, or 3. The AGF continues to help advance the Gelbvieh breed through its support of research and development. For this reason, the AGF continues its Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge. These two projects provide the information and funds necessary to generate data sets to advance carcass merit within the Gelbvieh breed. In addition to the data collected and the knowledge gained from these projects, money raised will help to further develop more accurate tools for ranchers when selecting Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics.

SCALE & RAIL CONTEST RESULTS The Scale and Rail Contest awarded $1,625 in cash prizes and 15 banners to outstanding participants in both the Gelbvieh and Balancer divisions.

GELBVIEH: THE MATERNAL BREED OF CHOICE BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

They milk good, they’re docile, gentle and they dang sure wean bigger calves than some of the other breeds out there,” said Lee Marriott, Rocking M Ranch, Stover, Missouri. Docility is one of the most appreciated Gelbvieh traits among commercial cattle producers who value cattle that will breed back and produce a calf year after year. Gelbvieh cattle exhibit the strong maternal strengths of added fertility and quiet temperament. The added fertility of the Gelbvieh cow and her productivity made Gale Rippey, Gale Rippey Farms in Galax, Virginia, a believer in the breed. He sees a 95-98% conception rate on his virgin heifers but credits the most phenomenal aspect as their breed back rate that next year. They see a 98-99% pregnancy rate on their first calf heifers.

44 | FEBRUARY 2024

“Through time, first-calf heifers are the hardest thing there is to get bred back and these cattle will perform. If you get them bred back the first time, they’re going to breed back and stay in the herd,” Rippey said. The Marriotts looked at other breeds over the years, but they always came back to Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. They love the way the cattle act and grow and the well-rounded set of traits the breed has to offer. The Gelbvieh and Balancer cows give them the complete animal they’re looking for in their operation. “We’re really interested in our cows being good mothers, staying in the herd for a long time, and breeding back,” explained Stacey Marriott. “What we have really focused on is the maternal side of our cow herd.”

Rippey puts a tremendous emphasis on the disposition of his herd. The cattle need to be able to be handled and moved without having people get hurt or any fencing issues. Gelbvieh cattle are easy to handle and keep themselves and everyone involved safe. Their quiet temperament and docility make safe cattle handling and care an easy task to achieve. “What makes this breed shine is not when times are good, it’s when times are hard. Across the five breeds, we work with, there is no question in my mind that a Gelbvieh cow can be a full body condition score less than her other breed contemporaries and still breed at the top of the pack,” explained Bill Tucker, Tucker Family Farms, Amherst Virginia. “Their innate ability to turn what resources they have into fertility, it’s just the way their bodies work that sets them apart from the other breeds we’ve worked with.”

When choosing quality females, producers value cattle that stay in the herd for a long time and raise a calf each year regardless of climate. These producers recognize that Gelbvieh and Balancer females excel in both longevity and the ability to adapt to different environments. “The most overlooked trait, in my opinion, in the commercial beef industry is that the Gelbvieh cattle in our database blow away other breeds in longevity. It doesn’t matter if you’re buying a car or putting together the factory, we call the cow, if you can monetarize that out over 14 to 15 years instead of eight years, look at her return on investment,” explained Tucker. “Gelbvieh cattle are solid, they’re the oldest cows in our herds no matter how we use them in any composite. They’re there because they hang in there and do their job right.” The Powles continue to choose Gelbvieh because they are a strong maternal

breed, and they want to make their own cows. They don’t want to go out and buy their cow herd, they want to produce their own along with producing a steer calf that is comparable in the marketplace. Gelbvieh has done this repeatedly and is a great fit for their environment. Located in the Sandhills region of Nebraska, it’s basically a desert with about 14-16 inches of annual rainfall. They must be careful in management decisions, so they don’t overgraze their environment. “Maternal ability is important to us because, in a Sandhills operation, the cows have to fend for themselves a lot of times and take care of that calf in some pretty unique conditions. We supplement them and feed them in the wintertime, but on the maternal side, they’ve got to be a good mother who’s going to look out for their calf in all kinds of conditions in the Sandhills region,” explained Bryon Powles, Powles Ranch, Bingham, Nebraska.

Rippey credits the feed conversion of the Balancer female to her efficiency as she can take forage and turn it into pounds. However, when the environment isn’t prosperous in forage production, the Balancer female is still going to breed back and wean that heavy calf. These females are going to stay in the herd longer and continue to influence the genetics of the

operation. Additionally, her calf excels in feed efficiency to have a heavy carcass weight, grade well on the rail, and do so at a young age. “Our customer base understands moderation in the cow herd and functional traits. They understand you can have a 1200-pound cow with a 600-pound calf. You don’t have to have a 1600-pound cow to make the big calf. We’re not making huge cows, we’re making functional cows,” Tucker explained. Maternal efficiency is an important trait in any cow-calf operation and is one the Gelbvieh female excels in. With a more moderate mature cow size, Gelbvieh females consume less while weaning heavier calves. Gelbvieh and Balancer maternal influence in a crossbreeding system offers more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. Heavier weaning weights combined with feed bunk efficiency and heavier, faster-gaining feeder cattle can increase profitability. “The Gelbvieh cattle have been a true asset to our operation through the ability to utilize their genetics to set up a niche market with opportunities to meet new people and to help the beef industry,” said Rippey. Gelbvieh and Balancer females offer maternal superiority and moderate mature weights, quiet dispositions, added fertility, and greater longevity; truly, making them the maternal breed of choice.

PREPARATION IS THE KEY TO PROFITABILITY BY MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

The calving season doesn’t start when the first calf hits the ground, it’s a year-round process,” said Dr. A.J. Tarpoff, Kansas State University associate professor and beef extension veterinarian. “Nutrition, environmental conditions, genetic selection, stress management, and vaccination protocols are all keys to delivering a healthy calf.” A cow’s nutrition influences the viability of a calf which begins with fetal programming. The cow’s energy consumption influences muscle and fat cell development, her protein consumption influences the calf ’s feedlot and reproduction performance, and her mineral intake influences the calf ’s immune system. A producer’s nutrition program for their females influences the chance of dystocia and colostrum production. Females with a body condition score of four or less produce a lower volume and quality of colostrum and increase

50 | FEBRUARY 2024

their time to breed back. Additionally, a producer doesn’t want his females overconditioned or underconditioned as it significantly increases the likelihood of dystocia. Utilizing vaccination protocols to maintain herd health can reduce dystocia and increase colostrum production. Producers should prepare for the environmental conditions for the timing of calving season and have shelter in place if needed to assist in stress management for the cows, calves and themselves. Utilizing genetic tools such as EPDs can allow producers to reduce dystocia risk however, producers should still be prepared in the instance of an unexpected dystocia. “Have a checklist and ask yourself, am I ready for the first calf,” said Tarpoff. Producers should gather their calving equipment and restock their usable items that haven’t been used since the

previous calving season. Calving stress can be reduced by being prepared for any possible interventions.

STAGES OF PARTURITION Understanding the three stages of parturition is essential in successful calving management. Stage one is the relaxation and dilation of the cervix, and the calf enters the birth canal. During this stage, hormonal initiation and uterine contractions begin. During contractions, the fetus rotates with mechanical pressure from the legs and head and hydraulic pressure from the water bag. The stage is complete when the water bag breaks. Stage two is the delivery of the calf. The stage starts with the breaking of the water bag and usually lasts 30 minutes to two hours. On the outside, the dam lays down, there is obvious straining and contractions with the expulsion of the

water bag. The stage is complete with the delivery of the calf. Stage three is the passing of the placenta and starts following the delivery of the calf. The cow will continue to experience uterine contractions with the placenta passing within a half to eight hours. The stage is complete with the expulsion of the placenta. Producers should pay close attention to any retained placentas as they can cause infections and increase the time it takes for the cow to breed back.

NEONATAL CALF MANAGEMENT Immediately following delivery, a producer should check that the calf is breathing involuntarily and without any issues. Additionally, colostrum consumption is crucial to setting the calf up for success for the rest of its life. Within the first 24 hours of life a calf should consume 10 percent of its body weight in colostrum which is approximately three to four liters. Colostrum consumption needs to begin as quickly after birth as possible as the absorption time is limited and reduces by 50 percent within nine hours after birth. Calving in a cold environment increases the need for producer intervention. Calves should be warmed either with a floorboard heater in a pickup, heat lamps and blankets, warming boxes or warm water IV fluids. Warming a calf up to ideal body temperature can take around one to one and a half hours and is a process that should not be rushed. Being prepared for every new calving season reduces the stress experienced by both you and your females. Think back to what worked in previous years and plan for new efficiencies in the upcoming season. A successful calving season is the foundation to a profitable calf-crop.

WHY I CHOSE GELBVIEH JUNIOR CONNECTION BY ISABEL LOWE, AGJA SECRETARY

B

efore I was even born, my parents ran around 125 head of commercial females. As I got older and the expenses of three kids came along, my parents made the tough decision to have a dispersal of the commercial herd. When I was around six years old, they gave me and my two siblings the option to show cattle. With all three of us taking a liking to the few cows that were still around we opted with yes. So in 2011, 3L Gelbvieh was established. Growing up in the breed, I grew a passion for becoming more educated about the benefits and general facts of the Gelbvieh breed. I wanted to have an educated decision on the breed that I am going to raise and show. I even made the decision to go IGS: The Summit in 2021 in Galveston, Texas, and again in 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona. I was exposed to the different challenges and needs that come in each step of the cattle industry and the solutions for each. These trips gave me more confidence in my decision to choose Gelbvieh because I found that they offered many of these solutions. As does every cattle breed across the globe, Gelbvieh cattle have many advantages. For me, theirs outweighed the other breeds. As a smaller producer, I prioritize things like growth, docility, stayability and maternal traits. I find that the German breed, Gelbvieh checks the most boxes. Whether you are

growing steers, bulls or heifers, we all appreciate fast growth rates. Gelbvieh cattle have a fast growth rate that stems from their low birth weights that helps them reach maturity quickly. The faster our calves grow, the higher the chances of profit grow. As a smaller scale producer, docility is extremely important to me. I not only prioritize it because I show cattle but also for the cattle on pastures. Docility has a lot of benefits for cattle. It not only makes for easier calving and handling, but also better growth. When cattle are more stressed or nervous, they tend not to eat or drink as much, which is more prominent in less docile cattle. Studies have shown that cattle with a higher docility score have a higher average daily gain than those with a lower score. So, in turn, docility saves money and time. Which leads me to stayability. It is vital to have females that can stay in the herd for long periods of time. Sadly, money does not grow on trees, so we need to be able to keep cattle in the herd for as long as possible to not have to purchase replacement females. Gelbvieh cattle excel in stayability which leads them to have a higher profitability.

are a breed characteristic that matters. Gelbvieh cattle are extremely good mothers that calve easily with the ability to produce a heavy calf. Which leads to their exceptional milking ability. Their high-quality udders and feed efficiency allows them to turn feed nutrients into milk components quickly. This allows for more quick growing calves that get to market weight quickly. I was not only drawn to the breed by their traits, but also the opportunities and people within the breed. When I started showing Gelbvieh cattle in 2011, I was met with open arms and people that were just as passionate as me. I like to think of the people in the breed as one big family with the same goal for promoting the breed that we all know and appreciate. This breed has also given me opportunities to expand my skills and knowledge with shows, events and contests. As the current American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) secretary, I am proud to say I choose to own and raise Gelbvieh cattle.

.

One of the main advantages the Gelbvieh breed has to offer is their maternal traits. Strong maternal traits

The AGJA Board of Directors provides leadership to the junior association. The Board is made up of nine Directors who serve two-year terms, and one Ex-Officio Director. There are five officers within the AGJA Board of Directors, President, Vice President, Vice President of Leadership Development, Secretary and Treasurer. To be eligible for election to the Board of Directors a member must be 16 years of age as of January 1 and may not have reached his/her 20th birthday on January 1 of the calendar year in which the election is held in order to be able to serve a full two year term during his/her eligibility.

AGA PROJECTS ARE THE

SMART, RELIABLE AND PROFITABLE WAY TO IMPROVE GENETIC MERIT

DISCOVER THE COW POWER IN YOUR HERD! The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project is a collaborative effort with the American Gelbvieh Association, American Gelbvieh Foundation and Neogen to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information of females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps increase the accuracy and predicting powers of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. With generous support from the American Gelbvieh Foundation, the Cow Power Project is now offering a lower price for the genomic test. Through participation in the project, members have the opportunity to receive a research price of $20 for a GGP-100k genomic test on females to DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory. Additionally, participants who submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of their current active cow inventory will receive an additional one-time $4 per head rebate. Thus, all females can receive a GGP-100k genomic test for only $16. For just $1 more than a parentage test, members are encouraged to take advantage of this incredible opportunity and learn about the cow power in their herd.

sired by Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls. The Balancer® Edge program requires a minimum of 75% of the sires used to be registered Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls, and these bulls must be a minimum of 25% Gelbvieh genetics. The verification process for this program requires producers to submit the first and last calf born date, head count and registration papers of the sires to verify Gelbvieh genetics. The AGA has partnered with IMI Global, an accredited, independent verification company who evaluates specific attributes or practices associated with livestock production and provides an unbiased assessment of the ability of any animal or group of animals to meet those specific standards or claims. Balancer® Edge users pay $3.00/head which includes the tags and application processing. Producers can choose between 982 and 840 EID tags. 840 EID tags require a premise ID. Producers also have the option of choosing a combo set (visual tag and EID) at an additional $1.25 per head. Please allow approximately two weeks to receive your tags from the time of ordering. Rush orders are available at an additional cost.

PROFITABLE GENETICS FROM THE RANCH TO THE RAIL The Carcass Data Collection Project is designed to deliver AGA members and their customers the opportunity to submit carcass data on Gelbvieh and Balancer®-influenced genetics, providing an avenue for harvest data on terminal

cattle to be paired with genotypes and incorporated into the genetic evaluation. Such phenotypic and genotypic data will provide Gelbvieh breeders with tools to make their management decisions more efficient and accurate. Ultimately, the Carcass Data Collection Project aims to increase the carcass record database and enhance the predicting power of genomic panels. Program eligibility is structured to ensure high-quality data is collected throughout the project. Eligible cattle must be sired by a bull registered with the AGA and have a minimum breed composition of 25% Gelbvieh and dams must be identifiable for age and breed composition. All calves must be tagged with an EID, have a DNA tissue sample collected, and must conform to contemporary grouping guidelines. Participants will also need to have access to harvest data records. Under the Carcass Data Collection Project, the AGA, with the support of Neogen, will cover the cost of genotyping all eligible cattle in the project. Genotypes are used to improve the genomic panels’ ability to predict carcass traits as well as sire-verify the participating cattle in the project. Sire-verification is a very valuable yet underutilized tool for commercial cattle producers to rank bulls used in multisire pastures. Participants in this project will be able to capitalize on these and more benefits of genomic technologies without incurring the cost. To enroll in any AGA project, call the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email info@gelbvieh.org.

MAKE YOUR

CROSSBREEDING

COUNT “The maternal strengths of Gelbvieh are a great advantage in my cowherd. These females are good mothers, have quiet dispositions, claim their calves at birth and milk well.” - MATT JARVIS, PHILLIPSBURG, KS

GELBVIEH & BALANCER

®

Make Crossbreeding Easy

PERFORMANCE

PRODUCTIVITY

PROFITABILITY

Gelbvieh maternal influence in a crossbreeding system offers added fertility, increased longevity, and more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed.

The crossbred female is 30 percent more productive over her lifetime. Greater productivity equates to more money in the bank.

Using Gelbvieh and Balancer ® genetics can increase profitability through heavier weaning weights, improved feed efficiency as well as heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle.
