GELBVIEH SHOW MODERATE MATURE COW SIZE FROM THE CORNER OFFICE BY MEGAN SLATER
R
ecently, new research from scientists at University of Nebraska-Lincoln and U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) was published on breed and heterotic effects for mature weight in beef cattle. This research was conducted using over 5,000 crossbred cows from the USMARC’s Germplasm Evaluation Program and 108,957 weight records collected from weaning up to six years of age. The Germplasm Evaluation Program provides a comprehensive comparison for various traits of the most economically important breeds within the United States. In the study, “Breed and heterotic effects for mature weight in beef cattle” released in the August 2021 Journal of Animal Science, Volume 99, Issue 8, the estimate of heritability for mature weight from the data was 0.56, meaning a response will be seen when selection pressure is applied to the trait. Looking at the breed differences, there were 16 different beef breeds evaluated in the study and the results were expressed as deviations from Angus. When comparing the seven major beef breeds in the United States, Gelbvieh showed the most moderate
mature cow weight at -145.4 lbs when compared to Angus. Looking at the breed differences of other highly used breeds, Angus were the heaviest cows in the population. Following Angus, Charolais weighed in at -19.6 lbs; followed by Hereford at -38.5 lbs; Simmental at -73.5; Limousin at -95.3 lbs; Red Angus at -98.6 lbs; and Shorthorn at -132.4 lbs, respectively. When compared to all 16 breeds in the study, Gelbvieh showed the third most moderate size, only behind Braunvieh (-300.7 lbs) and Beefmaster (-151.4). Mature weight has an impact on the costs and efficiencies of an operation. Of course, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to mature cow weight; the ideal size of cow can be variable depending on the type of environment and production system. That being said, according to this study, the average weight of cows at slaughter increased from 1,047 pounds in 1975 to 1,369 pounds in 2005, meaning average cow weights increased by roughly 322 pounds in those 30 years. Increasing cow weights can be attributed to increased selection pressure on growth
traits. Producing heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle can come with trade-offs when we look at mature cow weights. Heavier cows require more feed resources to maintain, and with feed costs typically being the largest line item on any operation’s budget, extra pounds of calf often doesn’t offset the extra feeding costs of a heavier cow. This study is not the first time Gelbvieh has been noted for a moderate mature cow size. According to the USMARC Progress Report #22, released in 2004, Gelbvieh were shown to have the most moderate mature cow size of the seven major beef breeds listed earlier in this article. Although these studies only focused on cow size, Gelbvieh cattle are also known for growth and heavy weaning calves. Having more moderate cows that consume less while still weaning heavier calves creates efficiency on an operation and optimizes resources. As we are at a time where input costs continue to rise and resources are decreasing, moderate females will be in even greater demand. Gelbvieh and Balancer® females meet that mark.

GELBVIEH’S
COMPETITIVE POSITION VIEW FROM THE BOARD BY KLINT SICKLER
G
reetings to everyone from balmy southwest North Dakota! As I write this it’s a cool -20 degrees Fahrenheit outside, with windchill at -46. It’s been a busy couple of months for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) and the Gelbvieh breed, with our annual convention held in late 2021. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of Gelbvieh in the United States, a milestone that is truly amazing when you look back. This breed has weathered numerous trends and fads in the cattle industry over the past 50 years. We have been through the pendulum swings in frame size and the preferences of gold, red or black cattle. The breed has even taken a historically horned animal and made them homozygous polled. As a breed, we have taken monumental strides to become, and remain, a relevant part of the beef industry—but our work is far from over. We had an excellent group of speakers join us in Oklahoma City for our national convention. Additionally, the AGA board of directors and staff unveiled our strategic plan for the next
five years. The central theme of these sessions and roundtables was to establish Gelbvieh-influenced females as the efficiency standard in the beef industry. It doesn’t matter which direction you turn today, there is talk about sustainability and efficiency. The word “sustainability” tends to trigger many different thoughts and opinions. When we say “sustainability,” we’re not talking about lemongrass or trading in your SuperDuty for a Prius. For me, it all boils down to a simple concept – how do we position our commercial and seedstock customers to remain profitable into the future, while feeding an increasing global population on acres that are reduced every year? How do we ensure that future generations will have a ranch to return to? Most importantly, how do we integrate Gelbvieh-influenced cattle into the equation as the solution to reach those goals? As a breed, we are in an enviable position. Gelbvieh-influenced cattle excel at a majority of the traits that contribute to beef sustainability. A
recent study has once again shown that as a breed, Gelbvieh show the most moderate mature weight of the seven major beef breeds in the United States. Additionally, Gelbvieh females are known for weaning calves at a higher body weight percentage. This is the definition of doing ‘more with less.’ These are all things that we have done well for decades, and things that have gotten us to where we are today. We’ve come to a point where the demands of the market are aligning with the core strengths of our breed. The task before the AGA is to construct a plan to spread this message and cultivate the right partnerships to capitalize on these strengths. As president of the board, and a seedstock producer, I’m excited for what we have in front of us. When our kids are sitting in Oklahoma City in 50 years, I hope they look at this period in time as one of the defining moments for the breed, and one that solidified the success of Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics for years to come.
Klint Sickler is the newly-elected AGA president. Klint resides in Gladstone, North Dakota, where he and his wife, Maralee, carry on the 74 year legacy of Prairie Hills Gelbvieh. As president, Klint works with the executive director and additional directors to lead the association. Klint is currently in his sixth consecutive year on the board of directors, having previously served as secretary and vice president before his current term as president. To learn more about Klint and Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, read his feature on page 45.

THE COMPETITION BETWEEN
SCIENCE & EMOTION FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE
K
im Stackhouse-Lawson, Ph.D., director of AgNext and professor in the department of animal science at Colorado State University, kicked off the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup symposium at the American Gelbvieh Association national convention with a presentation around the emotional and scientific struggle that has become the platform for sustainability. “First and foremost, we have to acknowledge that the space of sustainability is highly political; it’s polarizing,” Stackhouse-Lawson says. “It’s also difficult to get your arms around, and some of that is because emotion and science are parallel in sustainability, and if you ever have a question of whether it’s science or emotion that wins, unfortunately, it’s always emotion,” she says. Another challenging element of sustainability: everyone defines it differently. The most common way to define the group of principles is through a balanced approach of the measures of social, economic and environmental aspects, however, most impose their own parameters when arriving at a definition. “In the last four or five years, we’ve really seen sustainability evolve into a science that works on eliminating risk from a business or supply chain – a corporate
10 | FEBRUARY 2022
risk mitigation strategy,” she says, adding that to understand sustainability from this perspective, the conversation has to shift to climate change. “I want to demonstrate what risk looks like through the lens of climate,” Stackhouse-Lawson says. “Risk exists in two forms in this conversation: reputation and access to capital.” Showing a slide of protestors demonstrating outside of a European OSI Group beef patty plant, StackhouseLawson admonished the room, “It’s getting closer. The caption of this slide reads: ‘Protestors blocked four McDonald’s sites across England on Saturday, demanding the fast food chain to switch to plant-based products by 2025.’ OSI is one-step removed from McDonalds. These attacks are coming closer and closer to the supply chain,” she said. If public reputation smears aren’t enough, the next slide presented an article clipping from prominent finance magazine, “The Guardian,” warning that European-based banks were confronting regulation to not invest in high greenhouse emitting industries, especially targeting animal agriculture. “These regulations aren’t going to go away. Many of you may have read about COP26 and the Biden administration’s
commitment to reduce net emissions by 30 percent by 2030,” she says. “Approximately 30 percent of methane emissions that we produce in the U.S. come from enteric emissions. We own a relatively large piece of this methane pie.” The Sixth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that we can expect to see near one and a half to two degrees Celsius warming, with many scientists and climate experts reporting that our climate impacts are irreversible. Additionally, the International Panel on Climate Change stated that if we are going to curb temperature, we have to stop emitting carbon into the atmosphere…zero emissions. “This is one of those head shaking moments,” Stackhouse-Lawson says. “It doesn’t seem very feasible or practical, but that is where the climate scientists are at.” There are three greenhouse gas emissions that are important in animal agriculture: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, and each one of those molecules has a different ability to trap heat. CO2 has the least ability. Methane is 28 times more potent than CO2, and nitrous oxide is 298 times more potent than CO2 in trapping atmospheric heat.
FEATURE | EDITORIAL | NEWS
“EMOTION AND SCIENCE ARE PARALLEL IN SUSTAINABILITY. AND IF YOU EVER HAVE A QUESTION OF WHETHER IT’S SCIENCE OR EMOTION THAT WINS, UNFORTUNATELY, IT’S ALWAYS EMOTION.” — KIM STACKHOUSE-LAWSON, PH.D. COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY
Of the man-made greenhouse gases in the United States, carbon dioxide is responsible for approximately 80 percent of our emissions, methane is responsible for approximately 10 and nitrous oxide is responsible for approximately seven. Of those percentages, agriculture contributes 10 percent, and as a sector, animal agriculture contributes 3.8 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. Both livestock and crop cultivation have increased in greenhouse gas emissions since 1990, 8.5 and 21 percent, respectively—numbers that make sense given the increased number of livestock animals and increased crop production.
FOOTPRINT IS DIFFERENT THAN ABSOLUTE EMISSIONS “Six months ago, I could have come up here and only talked about footprint, but because we’ve seen an increased focus on greenhouse gas emissions, we need to talk about total emissions and footprints,” Stackhouse-Lawson says. Footprint is the entire system pulled together, divided by the output.
“The most efficient beef producing countries have the lowest carbon footprint, even though the total amount of greenhouse gases those systems produce are the highest,” she says, “We are producing more food with less of an impact. We have an important story to tell.” Stackhouse-Lawson says that even though the beef industry has done an exceptional job of reducing the overall footprint, the industry needs to stay vigilant with total emissions. “The cow-calf sector is responsible for 70 percent of the greenhouse gas footprint of the entire beef sector,” she says. “Why? Because of the enteric methane that cows produce. The longer the carbohydrate chains are that a cow eats, the more enteric methane she will produce. She’s also producing a calf every year. That complicates things pretty quickly. How do we reach all 750,000 cow-calf producers in the U.S. and figure out what we can do on each of those very, very different ranches to reduce those emissions?”
GWP* (star), a result of 2017 research from Oxford University, is a new way to measure the impact of a molecule of methane based on the fact that methane is a short-lived climate gluten; it breaks down the CO2 and water, leaving the CO2 to be consumed by plants. This new measurement method will reward an efficient beef system. “This is good for the U.S. beef herd as long as our emissions stay the same. As an industry, we’re expecting our impact on temperature to decrease once the EPA accepts this new scoring model,” she says. Adding that one thing that is never included in the emission models, however, is the fact that not only do our livestock graze marginal land, those rangelands also store 20 percent of soil organic carbon. “The best thing that we can do right now is keep our grass right-side up,” Stackhouse-Lawson says. “Cattle can become an even greater part of the (climate change) solution by increasing soil carbon sequestration.”

DEFINING
SUSTAINABILITY ON THE RANCH FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE
B
eatty Canyon Ranch coowner Steve Wooten’s rancher perspective of sustainability resonated with attendees of the 2021 American Gelbvieh Association National Convention. “We have a consumer today that is more informed, more inquisitive and really wants to know where their food comes from,” he told attendees. “And they’re extremely loyal.” Wooten presented a session at the Cattleman’s Profit Roundup that looked at the rancher’s definition of sustainability, sharing that his family made the decision to move toward becoming “low cost and high efficiency” through better management practices in 2001. Since that time, Wooten has shared what he continues to learn about efficiently producing beef with the rest of the industry. Today, Wooten is a member of the US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (USRSB). “Six years ago, 150 of us (cattle industry members) met in a meeting room at NCBA headquarters. We set out to
12 | FEBRUARY 2022
identify the most important elements within our beef supply chain that need to be addressed when considering sustainability and climate issues for the future of the industry,” Wooten says.
Wooten says. “And if you stay engaged with USRSB, you’ll see how we are going to collect data and use it to help establish grazing management for carbon sequestration.”
When those members left that meeting room, animal health and wellbeing; greenhouse gas emissions; efficiency; yield; employee safety and wellbeing and land and water resources were the focuses of USRSB.
Wooten says that Beatty Canyon Ranch has had a grazing plan since the early nineties. The practice, he says, was added to the ranch’s management after attending a Ranching for Profit school. The resulting grazing plan allowed for different pastures to be managed at different times.
THE DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABILITY “Our land is our lives. Everything starts from the soil and comes up, and being a sustainable industry that can do some good against climate, it really becomes true,” Wooten says. Everything starts below the soil’s surface: the microbiology, carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling… everything. The soil is the production warehouse for the ranch and is an important driver of a ranch’s profitability. “The soil is the tool we provide to the system to fight greenhouse gases,”
“We make sure that plants are getting almost a full season of rest before we bring a cow back,” he says, also noting the way the ranch monitors stocking density. “We don’t want to put the same density (of cows) in a pasture two or three years in a row. We’ll move our density up and down based on the amount of moisture we receive across the ranch in a given year. The breakdown of the old grass material left to cover the soil will become organic matter. Everything we do with our grass is a contribution to carbon sequestration and soil health.”

“I CANNOT EMPHASIZE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR EVERY COW TO HAVE A CALF THAT GETS UP WITHIN 10 MINUTES AND GETS THAT FIRST COLOSTRUM TO JUMP START ITS IMMUNE SYSTEM. EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS RIGHT HERE AFFECTS THAT CALF’S PERFORMANCE FOR THE REST OF ITS LIFE.” — STEVE WOOTEN BEATTY CANYON RANCH
The ranch also focuses on plant diversity. The plants that develop and thrive as a result of these management practices are deeper rooted and work to break up clay and sandy soils. Wooten says that stockmanship and stewardship also have an important place in the sustainability conversation. “We’ve made a personal commitment to gentle cattle and true stockmanship and stewardship because we know how important it is to the guys that buy our calves and put them out on wheat. They can drive out to a wheat pasture and if a calf or two is on the wrong side of the electric fence, they can step toward them and the steers go back across the electric fence. They don’t throw their head in the air and take off running down the highway,” he says of the value gentle cattle provide. Another tool that Wooten says is invaluable to Beatty Canyon Ranch operations is Beef Quality Assurance. Once all animal caretakers and handlers are trained on the protocols, the consistency of practices adds efficiency
not only to the ranch, but to the entire value chain. “There is no other tool that is more important to us. Everyone is trained and we take it seriously,” he says, asking the audience, “Do you know what happens when a broken needle is found on the line? It shuts the entire chain down and it adds expense to the industry.” For Wooten, sustainability also means the ability to pass the ranch to the next generation, and having a succession plan in place is the key to making that happen. “I was blessed with a mentor in my uncle, and by the time Joy, my wife, and I, came home from college, there was no need for us to think about land available for lease or trying to buy 5,000 acres in the next county,” Wooten says. “The succession plan was already there and working, and we’ve done the same thing with our children. They are already in full management control.”
THE CRITICAL ROLE OF THE BREED ASSOCIATION Wooten says that breed associations play a critical role in animal health and wellbeing. The genetics that move forward to influence future generations significantly impact efficiency. “The determination of a breed association’s genetics moving forward makes a difference in what I can do. This is an example of a first calf heifer of ours,” Wooten says, pointing to a slide of a newborn calf, “I was there when she pushed the calf out. This is three minutes after; that calf is already getting up on his feet. I cannot emphasize how important it is for every cow to have a calf that gets up within 10 minutes and gets that first colostrum to jump start its immune system. Everything that happens right here affects that calf ’s performance for the rest of its life. You can’t make up with all of the supplements in the world what that little guy is going to get in the next five minutes.”

ounding out the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup at the American Gelbvieh Association national convention, Dustin Aherin, AGA board member, and director of strategy for Tyson’s beef and pork business, shared his insights on market direction and the Gelbvieh and Balancer® position within that direction. “I want to plant a seed for where incentives are coming from,” Aherin told attendees. “When we think about where the pressures have traditionally come from, we often point to consumers first. That isn’t anything new. When we think back to the push for quality, those dollars ultimately came from consumers and were passed down through the supply chain: through the packers, through marketing grids, to cattle producers who increased quality.” Aherin says that a focus on sustainability is bringing new pressures. Today, the pressure is coming from the government and exists all along the supply chain, with funding allocated by the current administration to

ensure that those pressures catalyze beef industry production. Within this structure are other vested groups, many breed associations and nongovernmental organizations. There are also shareholders looking at the sustainability space as an investment opportunity; and those investors, Aherin says, are interested in directing their dollars toward environment, social and governance (ESG) opportunities. “There’s a lot of institutional funds— think pensions, for instance—that have set guidelines that stipulate that they will only invest in companies that check the boxes around ESG,” he says. Aherin also talked about the role lenders are playing in financing sustainability efforts, which he notes is an interest rate opportunity rather than a cutoff of funding, at this time. “One way that the finance industry has started to offer some incentives on the food company side is called ‘sustainability linked financing.’ That’s where certain key performance
indicators are linked to better interest rates,” Aherin shares. “At the producer level, we are just starting to see this begin to develop with a push for operations to set a baseline and begin documenting changes and improvements.”
WILL IT PAY? “If we think about the consumer first, are they going to pay a premium for a product that’s stamped “sustainable?” More importantly, is that premium going to be enough to pay for some of the costs and supply chain needed to get it to them? I don’t think we have a clear answer to those questions yet,” he told attendees. A first of its kind USDA Process Verified Program (PVP), Low Carbon Beef, says that the answer is “yes.” Recent research by the group indicates that 71 percent of consumers expressed they are willing to pay a premium for beef certified as being produced with sustainable methods. The newly approved PVP will allow producers to differentiate and

“RIGHT NOW, WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY, AND TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, WE NEED TO STEP UP OUR GAME AND REALLY FOCUS ON SOME OF THE TRAITS THAT HAVE SUSTAINABILITY IMPACTS SO WE CAN PROVE THROUGH NUMBERS WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW.” — DUSTIN AHERIN TYSON FRESH MEATS
market beef that is raised with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
That’s an opportunity for beef producers.
The sheer fact that the USDA has approved a program of this type confirms that interest exists from all market stakeholders.
“We’re already good at a lot of these things,” he says. “Have you measured pounds weaned versus pounds exposed? Do you have a breeding plan that is based on marketing goals? Are you BQA certified? So much of this is about just documenting things you are already doing, putting it in writing so there’s a record.”
“From January to August 2021, we saw sustainable linked financing reach more than $300 billion, globally,” Aherin says. “These dollars are growing fast; around 18 percent of cash inflows into investment funds were targeted towards funds that had some kind of sustainability metric built into them.” Aherin predicts that many of the incentives for progress within the supply chain are going to come from the targets and goals set by major food companies—a trade-off of sorts, where the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and improved sustainability doesn’t necessarily come from the food company itself, but rather from the practices of supply chain partners those companies source ingredients from.
The majority of the resources used in the beef industry are consumed at the cow-calf level, with around 75% of the entire beef industry feed inputs consumed within that sector. Aherin says that AGA and other breed associations are playing an important role in facilitating the documentation and quantification of many of these important metrics at the cow-calf level. To really know and understand the total resource use per pound of calf weaned or per pound of beef produced, producers use many metrics, essentially
building a funnel of information for each cow in the herd. Those metrics are, more often than not, a story of sustainability. “We are so good (as a sector) at collecting data—measuring and quantifying—and then using that data to improve cattle through EPDs. Right now, we have an incredible opportunity, and to take advantage of it, we need to step up our game and really focus on some of the traits that have sustainability impacts so we can prove through numbers what we already know,” he says. Today, the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed boasts the smallest mature cow size of all major breeds, unsurpassed fertility and a level of docility that makes the breed family friendly. The breed holds the pieces needed for both commercial and seedstock producers to put the sustainability puzzle together. If and how operations put that puzzle together is up to them…for now.

LOCATING ANIMALS IN THE REGISTRY
W
hether you purchased an animal during the recent sale season or you are scouring the upcoming sales listed on Gelbvieh. org, it is important to know where to find those animals on the AGA Online Registry Service. Before you start your search, you will want to make sure you have the animal(s) registration number, tattoo or name.
REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS BY JAKE RENNER, M.S.
SEARCHING THE REGISTRY 1.
Visit Gelbvieh.org and click Animal Search at the top of the page. This will take you to the AGA Online Registry Service.
2.
On the home screen, you’ll find three columns: Ranch Search, EPD Search and Animal Search. The Animal Search column offers the opportunity to search the AGA inventory for animals by sex and/or identification including registration number, tattoo, name or electronic identification (EID) number.
3.
Select the specific parameters of your search by clicking the button underneath each as shown in the screenshot on the left.
4.
Type the animal detail in the Search Value text box.
5.
Locate and click the “Search for Reg No” button at the bottom of the Animal Search column.
6.
This button will search the registry even if you prefer to search by tattoo, name or EID.
7.
Your search results will appear below the columns. Select the animals registration number to view their detail screen.
If you are an active member of the AGA, animals can be searched using the steps provided above or by logging into your account and selecting any of the tabs, explained below: • “All” lists all active animals (bulls and females) currently listed under your ownership. • The tabs listed under “Bulls” and “Females” provide lists of your animals sorted by sex and age and status (breeding, yearling, weaned, pre-wean). • “Legacy” lists all animals that have been disposed or transferred that were once in your active inventory. Once you’ve selected the tab, the quickest way to search your inventory is to hold down the “Ctrl” and “F” buttons on your keyboard. This will generate a search bar on your screen where you can type in the animal’s details. If the data you entered is on the screen, it will appear highlighted. Keep in mind, if you type in “123” all animals with that sequence of numbers will be highlighted so be sure to enter the full registration number or tattoo to specify your search. If you have any questions about locating a recent purchase of Gelbvieh or Balancer® genetics on the registry, please call the office at 303-465-2333 or email info@gelbvieh.org and we would be more than happy to assist you.

OVER THE FENCE
with
RIPPEY FARMS F
or this month’s Over the Fence, AGA Commercial Marketing Director, Tom Strahm, caught up with Rippey Farms’ Gale Rippey of Galax, Virginia. Below, Tom and Gale discuss Rippey Farms and the choice to use Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics.
TOM: Gale, tell us a little bit about Rippey Farms. GALE: I operate Rippey Farms out of
Galax, Virginia, which is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We’re about 2,5003,000 feet in elevation. We grow a tremendous amount of cool season grasses here. Our whole commercial cow-calf and commercial replacement heifer program is based on grass, forage and hay. We don’t grow any corn and try to avoid feeding as much supplement grain as possible. The unique part about this area is the temperatures; we don’t have extreme heat, we don’t have extreme cold and most years we have plenty of moisture to grow a really good grass crop. We consider grass, in our country, a crop, like people consider corn a crop somewhere else. We’re really blessed to grow good grass.
TOM: Gale, talk about your commercial heifer program.
GALE: We’ve been able to establish
a good commercial cowherd and a demand for commercial replacement females. We’ve been able to advance our
20 | FEBRUARY 2022
herd and our business plan through the commercial female business. At the end of the season, our heifers that are going into the breeding program are valued about $200 higher than our steer calves.
TOM: What kind of bulls are you using
in your commercial replacement heifer program?
GALE: We’ve put a lot of focus on
making sure the bulls we buy have adequate milk. We’ve also focused on bulls that don’t have massive birth weights, but still put enough growth on the calves that our steer performance doesn’t suffer. When we get ready to sell steer calves, we’re selling calves that are in the top of the market in size for day of age. We’re still looking at our steer calves to help pay the bills, so we aren’t sacrificing any performance in our steers trying to make a better female.
Gelbvieh genetics grew from that point. As my dad reached retirement age, we were expanding our cowherd. We replaced every other breed of bull with Gelbvieh before then, expanded our cow numbers and kept buying Gelbvieh bulls. One of the advantages that we saw was when everything had to be black and we were buying black Gelbvieh bulls, it didn’t matter what cow we put them on, we had black calves to sell. That was a great marketing strategy for us. We were really satisfied with the growth we were getting out of our calves over other black breeds we had tried.
TOM: Was that when you began keeping more Balancer replacement females for your own herd?
GALE: Yes, we had been trying to replace

our cowherd with Balancer females. We received a letter from the AGA to attend a Maternal Edge sale that the association put together in Cross Plains, Tennessee. We took some fall-calving heifers with calves by their side to that sale. In doing so, we realized that we could market those extra females that were good enough for breeding stock for a price advantage. We topped the sale every year but one with our heifers. It was an experience that made us realize the value and potential we had with these Balancer females and the value that they provided the beef cattle community.
GALE: We purchased our first Gelbvieh
TOM: How are you marketing those bred
We don’t need a terminal cross bull to make a big feeder calf. We’re able to use those same bulls that we’re keeping heifers out of to make steers that will be weighing 850 pounds at 12 months of age.

REGISTERED GELBVIEH & BALANCER® Move your herd forward by taking advantage of over 38 years of intentional A.I. breeding! GALE: A couple years before the
Maternal Edge sale stopped, our local cattlemen’s association had a spring calving sale, and they were looking to add numbers and versatility to that sale. They decided to offer cow-calf pairs, and I consigned. As the Cross Plains sale went away, we were able to come back and market our cattle locally. As we have built our reputation and people have bought these Balancer females, put them to work in their herd, come back to sales and bought them again, the word of mouth has spread. We’ve been able to sell some females private treaty. We’re able to market every heifer we can produce that we feel is going to make a good momma cow.

TOM: How are you marketing your steer calves and the heifer calves that don’t make the cut as replacement females?
GALE: We background those heifers
and steers at least 60 days. We start marketing trailer load lots of those calves as they reach 850 pounds. Looking at birth dates and the way that they perform, by the time that they are 12-13 months of age, they are at that 850-pound mark. The thing that helps us is backgrounding those calves and putting enough calves together that are the same breed, phenotype and weight to be able to fill a pot.

CAPITALIZING ON
CARBON MARKET OPPORTUNITIES O
FEATURE SPONSORED BY AGORO CARBON ALLIANCE
ne of the most overlooked opportunities to move the climate change needle in the right direction is the establishment and maintenance of soil health. As an industry, we hear about no-till practices, cover cropping and fertilizer management in row crop production. But what about the carbon sequestration ability our grazing lands hold? According to the National Resources Conservation Service, range and pasture lands are located in all 50 U.S. states, and make up over 27%—a whopping 528 million acres—of the total acreage of the contiguous 48 states, outnumbering both forest and crop lands. The grasses, legumes and shrubs on grazing lands remove carbon dioxide from the air through photosynthesis and store it in the soil. Additional carbon
24 | FEBRUARY 2022
sequestration occurs when an adequate carbon and nitrogen ratio is maintained via ground cover and residue. Both carbon sequestration processes rely on the microbes that inhabit healthy soils. These microbes, the healthy soils they build and the carbon those healthy soils sequester hold opportunity for the ranchers that manage them.
CAPITALIZING ON THE CARBON RESERVOIR West Texas farmer and cattle rancher Greg Knezek is no stranger to agronomy and the benefits healthy soils deliver to an operation. As the fourth generation to farm his family’s land, Knezek fully took over operations in 2010 with his brother joining the venture in 2015.
“We run cattle on some of the wheat acres that we plant and take the rest of those acres to harvest,” Knezek says of his family’s farming model. “We also grow a few spring crops—mostly cotton and milo.” Baylor county is located in northwest Texas, about 60 miles east of the Panhandle, in Red River country. It can get dry, very dry, and spring crops, aside from cotton and milo, can be a challenge to grow. “We are running stockers now, but we’ve always had a herd of momma cows. We had to sell them because of the bad drought that we were in,” he says, adding that when he and his brother took over the operation, they had a different idea of how they wanted things to look and no disillusions that the changes could happen overnight.
FEATURE | EDITORIAL | NEWS “When me and my brother took over the farm, we wanted to look at a different way of doing things,” Knezek says. “My dad always believed that if it could be plowed five times, it should be plowed six times. It’s just the way things were. My brother and I started having serious conversations about regenerative agriculture two years ago, and this year, we’ll be completely no-till except for some acres we’ll be running an inline ripper over.” Changing the way they farmed wasn’t the only improvement the brothers were looking to make in their operation. With the cows off of their pasture ground, they set to work putting an improvement plan in place. Tallying up the improvements they hoped to make, they quickly realized that much of what they wanted to do would not pencil into their budget. Enter a grazing carbon market opportunity. Knezek took a position with Agoro Carbon as an agronomist, and within a month of working for the company, was ready to enroll his own pasture acres. “The range and pasture program from Agoro is great from a rancher
standpoint. Things that I want to do that are normally too cost prohibitive, like having a plane spray my acres, for instance, we don’t usually get a lot of return on that,” he says and notes that the program will also help to finance the introduction of new forages to shorten the number of days they feed hay. “We’re looking at overseeding with an annual rye that will give us some green grass in the fall and winter, and we’re going to put some green fertilizer down. We’ve got native grass that’s never seen fertilizer; we’re in an area where we run one pair to 15 acres. We are looking at being able to cut that down to 8 to 8.5 acres, because we’re getting paid to improve our pastures with overseeding, weed control and fertilizer.”
OWNERSHIP NOT REQUIRED The opportunity isn’t exclusive to the operation’s deeded acres, either. Knezek says that he enrolled all of his leased pasture, as well, a practice regional sales manager Todd Carlton says makes sense. “The number of times that ranch land would be picked up and turned into farmland is really pretty small, and, on ranch land, you only have to do the practices one time to qualify—unlike
row crop where you have to do it every year. If a rancher loses a place, we’ll visit with whomever takes it over to let them know what’s going on, but the improvement for the four-year contract period has already been made in year one,” he says. Payment for enrollment and to initiate improvement practices is made within 60 days of a signed contract. Soil samples are taken in year one, before any improvements are made, to establish a baseline of carbon present in the soil. Soil samples are also pulled in year five and the rancher is paid for the accumulated carbon. “Getting started has been an easy process. The worst part was manually mapping fields, but most insurance companies have shape files that make it easy. In range and pasture, there’s not a lot of data required; it’s really just getting boundaries,” Knezek says. “If grass grows, they can contract it.” For more information and to learn more about Agoro Carbon’s grazing and pasture land opportunities, contact Todd Carlton at 402-540-6366 or todd.carlton@agorocarbon.com.

PUTTING THE BEST FEET FORWARD
T
DATA BULLETIN BY LINDSAY UPPERMAN, PH.D.
he decision to cull an animal from the herd can be impacted by various factors, such as performance, reproduction and conformation. For years, quality foot and hoof structure have been recognized as important traits to consider by both seedstock and commercial beef cattle producers. Recently, recommendations for the assessment and genetic evaluation of feet and leg structure have been studied.
HOCK SET Hock set is the degree of angularity in the hind leg of an animal. A low score indicates an extremely straight angle or post-legged animal, while a higher score represents too much angle or set to the hock or a sickle-hocked animal.
FEET & LEG SCORES Hoof claw, hoof angle and hock set should be gathered using a subjective measurement from 1-9 scale, with the middle of the scale being the optimum values. The recommendation is to score the worst hoof or leg on the animal.
HOOF CLAW SHAPE Hoof claw shape is described as the relative size and curvature of the lateral and medial claw on the individual hoof, where the distance between the claws serves to indicate the level of divergence. A lower score indicates an open and divergent claw set, while a higher score indicates an extreme scissor or corkscrew claw with curling of one or both claws.
HOOF ANGLE Hoof angle is measured as the degree of angularity from the toe and the base of the hoof to the base of the coronary band. Additionally, heel depth plays an important role in the scoring of hoof angle. A score on the low end represents a rigid pastern and hoof or extremely straight hoof, while a higher score represents an extremely shallow heel and long claw with weak pasterns.
EVALUATION At yearling age, bulls and heifers should have their scores collected with all animals in the contemporary group being evaluated. The contemporary group for foot and leg score is a group of yearling animals of the same sex, similar age and have been raised in the same management group. Mature cows and bulls can be evaluated annually when mature weights, mature heights, or body condition scores are collected. If you are collecting mature cow records, those can be recorded in the weaning queue on the online registry. If you have collected data that is ready for submission, please call the AGA office or send the data to lindsay@gelbvieh.org. When evaluating your animals’ feet and leg scores, it is best to make sure the cattle are on hard, dry and level groundwork with good lighting. If hoof trimming practices are in place, the animals should be evaluated prior to any trimming. Also, the person making the scoring decisions should have a clear, unobstructed view of the animal. As the observer, try to make the scores based on the animal at a stand, while avoiding using a chute or other restraint during the evaluation process. However, if a producer were to feel undertrained to provide a reliable evaluation of feet and leg scores, scoring guidelines (shown with the scoring descriptions) and online training modules are in development to share with producers. The figures and information suggested above provide a framework to utilize scores as herd management tools for culling procedures. Ultimately, feet and leg scores can be used as indicator traits to improve structural soundness and increase longevity within the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed.

WINTER SUPPLEMENTATION OF BEEF CALVES WHEN SUPPLEMENTATION DOESN’T PAY
FEATURE BY KARLA H. WILKE, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN COW-CALF SYSTEMS AND STOCKER MANAGEMENT
S
pring born calves are often weaned in the fall, supplemented through the winter at a low rate of gain, and then graze summer grass, taking advantage of compensatory gain until feedlot entry. Many producers assume providing minimal protein supplementation to target approximately 1.0 pound/day gain during the winter is the most economical system. However, research data would suggest this assumption is not the most economical management system. A study evaluating feeding 450 pound steers 0, 1.1, 2.3 or 3.4 pounds of dried distillers grains (DDGS)/day (dry matter basis) while the calves grazed dormant native range reported a linear gain response of 0.60, 1.06, 1.41 and 1.72 pounds/day, respectively. However, when the calves were subsequently allowed to graze high quality growing forage, the calves that were not supplemented on dormant range experienced compensatory gain and had a similar ending body weight to the calves supplemented with 1.1 pound of DDGS (625 pounds for both
treatments). Those non-supplemented calves compensated 100% compared to the low supplementation level. However, they only compensated 38% and 46% compared with the two higher levels of supplementation, and those calves maintained a weight advantage of 653 and 656 pounds, respectively. Therefore, the producer who spent money to achieve only one pound/day gain on dormant range lost money after grazing better quality forage because those calves weighed the same as the group that did not incur supplement expense. Supplement expense was optimal when calves were supplemented 2.3 pounds of DDGS targeting 1.5 pounds/day gain, regardless if DDGS was priced high or low if calves were kept through a high quality forage grazing phase. If calves were sold after winter grazing, supplementing with 3.4 pounds of DDGS resulted in the best economic analysis. In a meta-analysis of six studies, 500-pound calves were supplemented to target a winter rate of gain of 0.5 or 1.5 pounds/day. After summer grazing, the
calves supplemented to target the low rate of winter gain only compensated 37% (weighing 768 pounds) resulting in the calves targeted for a higher winter rate of gain being heavier at feedlot entry (weighing 840 pounds). Subsequently, the calves targeted for high gain in the winter were heavier at harvest (1307 pounds vs. 1230 pounds), successfully maintaining that weight advantage through all three phases of production. The economic analysis determined that the most profitable steers were the ones gaining 1.5 pounds/day on dormant winter range regardless of whether DDGS was priced low or high. These study results suggest that targeting winter gain of 1.5 pounds/day is most likely to result in added body weight that is maintained throughout subsequent phases including summer grazing and feedlot finishing and can be an economical practice. More importantly, these data suggest that spending money to supplement cattle at a low rate of gain and having that weight advantage lost in subsequent phases is costly to producers.

CONNECTING TO
COMMERCIAL CATTLEMEN JUNIOR CONNECTION BY JAYLEA POPE
G
rowing up in the cattle industry and as a junior member of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA), I quickly realized the true importance and impact commercial producers have on the cattle industry. I was a little five-year-old girl who had started showing my first-ever bucket calf at my county fair, and for the first few years of my showing career, I only really thought of the cattle industry as show cattle and seedstock cattle, because that was all that I had been exposed to. However, through opportunities available to young people in the beef industry, I gained awareness and learned more about the entirety of the cattle industry. I was better able to understand exactly how our industry operates. This was a vital turning point for me, because I was beginning to own several Gelbvieh and Balancer® cows of my own and I needed a way to market their offspring to other producers. Being involved in a breed association like the American Gelbvieh Association, there’s no shortage of information on how important it is to reach the
commercial industry and get our genetics into their herds, because Gelbvieh cattle can provide many beneficial traits that can make their cattle more profitable. As I started marketing the first bulls from my cows, I learned that there were way more marketing opportunities when you begin to focus on marketing genetics to commercial cattlemen. Luckily, my dad has been selling private treaty bulls in our area for some time, so he helped me begin to make connections with commercial producers that were already interested in Gelbvieh cattle, as well as producers with herds influenced by other breeds that complemented what we had to offer. It became more clear how some of the larger herds in the Gelbvieh breed were able to have such large sales and reach so many people. Reaching a vast audience isn’t possible without being able to effectively communicate and build connections with those you desire to market your cattle to. Learning these skills from a young age can be very helpful in building
a great business foundation for juniors that plan to continue raising cattle. Juniors in the AGJA have opportunities to participate in activities and contests at the junior national show in the summer. Juniors can gain skills through activities such as our sales talk contest, which places them face to face with potential buyers and gives them a chance to learn how to begin building a connection with someone in a sales scenario. The event also gives junior members feedback to help them improve their skills. In addition to this, there are also opportunities to explore other forms of advertisement, promotion and life skills that can help AGJA members in reaching commercial cattlemen. By helping our juniors learn what it takes to build necessary connections, the AGJA is helping to prepare its members for a future in the cattle industry. As junior members, we need to realize the importance of connecting with commercial producers so we can continue to assist our association in expanding into the commercial industry.
Jaylea Pope is serving her first year on the AGJA board of directors. Jaylea is the daughter of Jeff and Jeanne Pope. Her family owns and operates Pope Farms Genetics, located near Ravenna, Nebraska. Jaylea is currently a senior at Shelton High School and plans to continue her education at a four-year college pursuing a degree in agricultural education.

WHO WE ARE
WHAT IS A BALANCER ®?
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is dedicated to recording and promotiong Gelbvieh, Balancer and Gelbvieh-influenced cattle, while providing members and their customers programs and services to advance the breed. The AGA consists of approximately 1,100 members with a registry database that contains over 1 million animals including approximately 40,000 currently active Gelbvieh, Balancer® and Gelbvieh-influenced cows.
Balancer cattle are registered hybrid seedstock that have documented pedigrees and expected progeny differences. The American Gelbvieh Association was the first beef cattle breed to recognize and include a hybrid animal as registered stock.
THE STRENGTHS OF GELBVIEH
FAST FACTS
The Gelbvieh breed is well known throughout the industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth. With attributes such as more pounds of calf weaned, added fertility, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh and Balancer offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business. With the high costs associated with the development or purchase of replacement females, sustained production in a herd is essential. Gelbvieh females are proven to stay in the herd longer. U.S. Meat Animal Research Center data shows Gelbvieh females have the most moderate mature cow size of the seven major beef breeds. This reduced mature cow size allows for puberty to be reached at an earlier age, which leads to calving earlier in the season and producing a heavier calf at a younger age. Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle excel in traits such as growth, stayability, and productivity. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in a crossbreeding program can help increase profitability of an operation. See additional pounds and added profit through more efficiency and greater longevity of cows as well as heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle.
AGA STAFF 38 | FEBRUARY 2022
MEGAN SLATER Executive Director megans@gelbvieh.org
TOM STRAHM
Balancer animals are 25% to 75% Gelbvieh with the balance of Angus or Red Angus. Balancer cattle combine the Gelbvieh growth, muscle, leanness, fertility, longevity and low yield grading ability with the carcass qualities of Angus. Balancer cattle offer a simple and powerful way to maintain hybrid vigor and a profitable blend of British and Continental genetics without a complicated crossbreeding system. These cattle fit well into all aspects of the beef industry, including commercial cow-calf operations and on the rail.
HOW DO GELBVIEH AND BALANCER ® CROSSBRED FEMALES PERFORM BETTER? It’s all in the heterosis, or hybrid vigor, described as the increase in performance of the crossbred animal compared to the average of the straight-bred parents. Heterosis impacts traits with low heritability, e.g., reproduction. Producers with crossbred cows can see a higher percentage of their cowherd breed back on the first cycle due to maternal heterosis.
INDIVIDUAL HETEROSIS Individual heterosis is the improvement in performance by the individual crossbred animal above the average of its parents. Increased calf livability, weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass traits are examples of individual heterosis in crossbred calves.

MEG VANDERBUR Data Services Coordinator meganv@gelbvieh.org
Maternal heterosis leads to the combined improvement in traits from the dam that cause increases in the performance of her and her progeny. Examples of maternal heterosis in a beef cow include younger age at puberty, increased calving rate, increased survival of her calf to weaning, longevity and pounds of calf produced in her lifetime.

WELCOMING A NEW
P R E SI D EN T FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE
A
t the 2021 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration, longtime AGA member Klint Sickler, of Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, was elected to serve as the association’s president. Gladstone, North Dakota, has been home to Prairie Hills Gelbvieh since 1948, when Sickler’s grandfather homesteaded the ranch he and his family now call home. “In the early eighties, Dad attended the Black Hills Stock Show, and that was when breeders like Phil VanDervoort and some of those guys in northern South Dakota were just starting to bring Gelbvieh into the area,” Sickler says of his family’s beginnings with the breed. “Like most people in our breed, we started AI-ing what we had to Gelbvieh bulls. In 1985, Dad purchased our first two Gelbvieh females, and, as they say, the rest is history. We are getting ready to come into our 37th year in the breed. Gelbvieh cattle are pretty much all I have ever known.”
Today, Prairie Hills Gelbvieh runs a herd of high percentage, 99.9%, purebred cows and a small herd of Red Angus cows. Sickler and his wife, Maralee, are the third generation to operate Prairie Hills Gelbvieh. Sickler’s parents are also active in the management and operation of the ranch. Sickler had the opportunity to attend his first junior nationals in 1991. Although he didn’t take cattle, the exposure to the experience sealed his interest in participating again. “The first time I took cattle to junior nationals was 1993 in Kearney, Nebraska; and for any Gelbvieh history buffs out there, that was the year the tornado went through the parking lot and ripped a barn apart. Everyone came together, helped one another out and two days later we went on with business as usual,” he says. “When I look back, 30 years later, that sense of family that I and so many others feel with the Gelbvieh association has always been there. That sense of camaraderie is still here.”
The cattle are also special to Sickler. He shares that the docility and the performance of the breed makes them hard not to appreciate and promote, and Sickler is no stranger to promotion and betterment of the breed. To-date, Sickler is serving his sixth year on the board of directors, having previously served as secretary and vice president before beginning his term as president – an appointment and responsibilities he is excited to see get underway. “We’ve got the framework for our next strategic plan, and we are excited to get that really hammered down into an operational, working plan for the association,” he says. “The time is perfect right now for the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed. We have a push both from industry and the consumer for efficiency and sustainability. Those are two things that we do really well, we just need to be able to communicate that. We have to figure out how to get that message in front of people. My biggest goal is to work with our board to figure out how we do that.”

BIG PICTURE GENOMICS FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE
“W
hat does the big picture look like when it comes to genomics?”
That’s the question Neogen strategic account manager, Leoma Wells, asked attendees of the American Gelbvieh Association annual convention. Wells kicked off her presentation by choosing members of the audience to participate in her fictitious golf team. “I’m looking for athletes,” she joked as she scanned the room, pointing to her choices until her team was full. “This is how we used to choose our herd sires,” Wells told attendees. “We would look through sale and semen catalogs and we would set goals for our herd based off phenotype. And we had this fantastic goal in mind, but when we mated those animals, what happened?” she asked. “Sometimes we hit the jackpot, but if you’ve ever been to Vegas, you know that hitting the jackpot doesn’t happen very often.” Wells then asked the entire audience to raise their hands, deselecting members through a set of questions.
48 | FEBRUARY 2022
“Put your hand down if you’ve never played golf…if your handicap is above 20…wave your hand if you can drive further than 200 yards,” she questioned until the team had been reestablished. Only one of the original four remained on the team—a 25% accuracy. “What we just did was take measurable, tangible metrics and put together a team based on whether those metrics were met or not. We used more information to do a better job of building our golf team,” she said. Genomics is about using the tools at your disposal to make decisions that will influence your herd for the next decade. Genomics is also a resource that is vastly underutilized in both the seedstock and commercial industries.
GENETICS VS. GENOMICS Wells says that there is a disconnect between genetics and genomics—a general misunderstanding that often muddies the waters for producers interested in learning more about the animals in their herd. “Sometimes we’ll have an animal who performs really, really well and when
we look at their EPD, their performance doesn’t make sense. Those animals are outliers. They may perform incredibly well, but they don’t have the genes to connect together and pass on to their progeny,” she says. Genomics is the study of the connection of an animal’s genes, how those genes interact and behave with one another and how they are expressed. Genetics is the study of inherited traits and genes. Cattle have 30 pairs of chromosomes, which means there are a quintillion possibilities that arise when the sperm from that dynamite AI sire you chose meet the egg of your donor cow. We need every tool we have access to in the beef industry. Ask yourself: What is the value of getting closer to putting the right calf on the ground every time?
INVESTING IN GENOMICS In the beef business, there’s no such thing as a short-term plan, and the goals that steer an operation’s management plan should reflect that.
FEATURE | EDITORIAL | NEWS
“GENOMICS IS THE STUDY OF THE CONNECTION OF AN ANIMAL’S GENES, HOW THOSE GENES INTERACT AND BEHAVE WITH ONE ANOTHER AND HOW THEY ARE EXPRESSED. GENETICS IS THE STUDY OF INHERITED TRAITS AND GENES.” — LEOMA WELLS
Docility & Proven Performance
NEOGEN
“You have to be thinking about the fact that in 2037, bulls that are turned out this year will still have genetic influence in the herd,” Wells said. “When you collect data and DNA test your herd, you add the confidence to deliver animals that benefit the industry. Seedstock producers add to their ability to make their commercial customers profit. Commercial producers add confidence in the efficiency of the animals they are finishing or sending on to the feedlot. And, as an industry, that data allows us to improve cattle and confidently deliver the message of how sustainable the beef industry is, because we have the hard numbers to do so.” Genomics help take some of the assumptions or inferences out of animal breeding. In tune with the advancement artificial insemination and embryo transfer delivered to the industry more than half a century ago, genomics will drive progress forward for those who choose to use the technology. “Using genomics, we can expect to see decreased generation interval and improved replacement animal selection accuracy,” Wells says. “It adds confidence that you are going to get to that point you want to get to faster.”

THE
MATERNAL BREED OF CHOICE
I
t’s no secret that Gelbvieh-influenced cattle are the Continental breed of choice. The maternal traits, gentle temperament and fertility Gelbvieh cattle deliver also make them the maternal breed of choice. In this recap of our October American Rancher episode, we hear from producers across the U.S., utilizing Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics about how the breed is setting their operations up for long-term success. For southwestern Colorado ranchers Kevin and Bunny McComb, the Gelbvieh breed offers the docility their operation is looking for in both their replacement heifers and mother cows. The operation runs cattle through the summer on U.S. Forest Service land. The terrain is rough, and cattle must be structurally well equipped to travel and breed back for the next season.
HERD-BUILDING GENETICS “For replacement heifers, it always goes back to that age old, ‘Do you buy ‘em or do you raise ‘em?’ We like the genetics, so we raise our own,” Kevin says. “We like the Gelbvieh cattle because of their docility and maternal traits. We try to keep a moderate cow size, running on public lands in big country.” A little under 250 miles northeast, Sean Martin’s Martin Ranch is running cattle between 7,000 and 9,000 feet above sea
level in Carbondale, Colorado. Like the McCombs, one of the reasons Martin continues to invest in Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh-influenced genetics is because of the high quality replacement heifers that develop into long-term, profitable cows in the herd.
STAYABILITY THAT ADDS THE POUNDS
“When we select females in the fall, the first thing we are looking at is phenotype. They have to look the part of becoming a great mother cow,” he says. “In February, we PAP (pulmonary arterial pressure) test, set a limit and there’s a small fallout,” he says, noting that PAP testing and brisket are not a problem with the Gelbvieh-influenced cattle due to the Continental, mountain origin of the breed—a fact Martin finds reassuring.
In east-central Missouri, Loren Fischer agrees. Fischer has also built a herd centered on Gelbvieh-influenced and Balancer® genetics in his search for a breed that would produce replacement females that would remain in the herd for several years; cows that would breed back, shed off and handle the fescue most Missouri producers contend with.
“We have to know that we’re selling something our customers can take and run at any altitude with no fear of any issues,” he says, adding that no other tests matter if a cow doesn’t put a live calf on the ground every year. “The most important thing we do, and Gelbvieh heifers do a great job of, is a 30-day breed, and they have to make the cut. There’s no getting around it.” Both the McCombs and Martin agree that the maternal traits the Gelbvieh breed delivers put live, good-doing calves on the ground. And Gelbvieh mother cows with the milk, feet and disposition do an excellent job of taking care of them.
Martin says that another reason his operation has stayed with Gelbvieh is the added weight, especially on crossbred cattle.
Fischer found the advantages of Balancer genetics in both the females he is saving back and the calves he is sending to the feedlot. The Gelbvieh and Balancer breed delivers heavier weaning weights, gained from both genetics and excellent maternal milk production, and the performance genetics calves need to excel at the feedbunk. “We had a pen of heifers harvested, and out of 121 head with an average weight of 1,248, we had 114 choice and seven prime,” Fischer says. “We had 100 percent choice or better and 94 percent grade three or below. With our females that we’ve been producing and our calf data that we’re getting back from the feedlot, we are hitting our goals.”

AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION CARCASS CONTEST RESULTS
T
he American Gelbvieh Foundation Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge results were presented during the awards banquet at the American Gelbvieh Association National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration in Oklahoma City on December 10, 2021. The 2021 Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge was hosted by Darr Feedlot near Cozad, Nebraska. This project was initiated by the American Gelbvieh Foundation to implement research for the improvement of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeds by increasing the volume of carcass data submitted to the registry. The Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Steer Contest was introduced to increase the submission of sire qualified carcass data to the AGA. Sire qualified carcass data records allow for the improvement in accuracy of the sire’s carcass trait EPDs. Furthermore, as carcass records are one of the most difficult to collect, an increase in these records will significantly help to improve the selection of carcass traits for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. The requirements for the Scale and Rail Contest entry are as follows: 1.
Animals must have one registered Gelbvieh or Balancer parent.
2.
Animals should weigh a minimum of 750 lbs. with a maximum weight of 900 lbs. by feedlot entry.
RESULTS BY LINDSAY UPPERMAN, PH.D. 3.
Animals are required to have a Genomic Option 3 (GGPuLD) DNA test and must be sire qualified.
4.
Tissue samples are taken at the feedlot and the cost of the test is the responsibility of the AGF.
5.
All animals will get an EID tag at the feedlot.
6.
All animals MUST be weaned at least 30 days prior to arrival at feedlot.
The owner may select any animals in the Scale and Rail Contest to be entered into the Steer Challenge, where the donated animals are eligible to win both contests. The 2021 Scale and Rail Contest winners were Rippe Gelbvieh of Hubbell, Nebraska, Post Rock Cattle Company of Barnard, Kansas, and Stucky Beef Genetics of Salina, Kansas. The champion purebred steer for both average daily gain and carcass value went to Rippe Gelbvieh with a steer sired by Dunn’s Destination 029E. This steer averaged 3.8 lbs/day with his carcass valuing $1,949.84. Rippe Gelbvieh also raised the Champion Balancer steer for average daily gain sired by BTBR NEVADA 1170Y. The steer averaged 4.36 lbs/day. The Champion Balancer steer for carcass value went to Post Rock Cattle Co. sired by C503 Young Gun, and received $2,092.71 in total carcass value.
The Scale and Rail Contest also includes a pen division, where animals sired by the same bull (three head) can compete for total carcass value. This year, Post Rock Cattle Co. raised the Champion Pen of Balancer steers sired by VLK C503 Young Gun. The combined carcass value total for the group was $5,736.61. The reserve champion pen of Balancer steers was raised by Stucky Beef Genetics. This group of steers were sired by TTTT Mighty Hot ET and equated $5,099.83 in total carcass value. There were no purebred pens of Gelbvieh steers entered in this year’s contest. Congratulations to all winners of the AGF Scale and Rail Contest. The Steer Challenge allows for a producer to donate a steer in their name to the American Gelbvieh Foundation. The requirements for Steer Challenge entry are the same as the Scale and Rail Contest. Proceeds from the contest go to AGF. Thank you to Stucky Beef Genetics for donating a steer to the AGF and participating in the AGF Steer Challenge Contest. The 2022 Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge has already begun and is being hosted by Kinsley Feeders located near Kinsley, Kansas. The animals arrived at Kinsley Feeders in midDecember.

JJ BOEHLER
202 2 HALL O F FAME INDU CTEE
T
he American Gelbvieh Association recognized a dedicated member that has been an influential figure in the Gelbvieh breed during the 2021 AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration. JJ Boehler of Orleans, Nebraska, was officially inducted into the AGA Hall of Fame at the convention awards banquet on December 10, 2021. An AGA member since 1986, Boehler is a member of the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska (GAIN), having served on the board of directors and several committees. He has helped organize several state tours and was instrumental in developing the first Balancer Bull Futurity. He also helped establish the first paid state breeder representative position and has been a sale committee member for the GAIN Fall Female Festival. In addition to his contributions to the AGA, Boehler can boast several
accomplishments as a breeder. These include the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Champion in 2001, 2004 and 2006; People’s Choice Bull Futurity Champion in 2021; Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Supreme bull recipient two years in a row and many state and national champion awards.
“JJ has one of the most unique cow herds in the breed, winning national titles across the country and raising influential livestock,” Lori Brown of Dwight, Kansas, says. “Titles mean little to the humble breeder though. One drive through the pastures with him, you can see the spark and pride in his eye.”
“We have found that JJ has been a leader in utilizing new genetics of the Gelbvieh breed,” Robert Anderson of Jamestown, Kansas, says. “We have purchased several herd bulls from him over the past years. Those genetics have produced top quality replacement females, breeding bulls and high-quality steers for both the registered and commercial herds.”
These accomplishments are significant, but what sets Boehler apart is his integrity and passion. A man of not many words, his drive to grow the Gelbvieh breed with friends, family and future breeders, as well as his work behind the scenes, speaks volumes.
Beyond the recognition Boehler has received for the quality of cattle he raises, he is widely recognized for his passion for the industry and the breed.
“He is honest, hardworking and unselfish,” Jeff Swanson of Oxford, Nebraska, says. “But most of all, he is a good friend and an excellent choice for the American Gelbvieh Association’s Hall of Fame.”

Bar S Cattle Company is the recipient of this year’s Breeder of the Year award. The honor was presented to the Vehige family at the AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, in Oklahoma City. T Bar S is located in Billings, Missouri, and is owned and operated by Tom and his wife, Stacy, along with their children, Justin, Kyle and Grace. As long-time members, the Vehige family has been very active in the AGA and heavily involved in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA), with all three children having served on the AGJA board of directors. The Vehiges are also members of the Heart of America Gelbvieh Association. The honor came as a surprise to Tom who shared that the family’s passion for
Gelbvieh cattle has a foundation in the operation’s first breeding stock. “I knew that I wouldn’t ever be able to have the number of cattle I wanted, so I set out to find the best,” Vehige says. “I wanted to be a part of something bigger than me. I wanted to raise what I thought were the best cattle in the cow-calf industry and that led me to the maternal qualities of the Gelbvieh breed.” Vehige says that he had always been attracted to the continental side of the cattle business because of their outstanding performance and was impressed by the disposition and fertility of Gelbvieh. What he really fell in love with, however, was the calf crop. “At the time, I wasn’t sure if it was the base of my cowherd or the Gelbvieh bull I had purchased, so I went back and bought some purebred females,” he
says. “I quickly found out that it was the Gelbvieh I was attracted to. That was the foundation that I built the herd from.” Today, the operation that got its start in 1993 is operated as a family endeavor in every sense of the word. “We were going to downsize, my wife and I. We didn’t ever want to force this on our children, but they have all wanted to be a part of what we are doing, and, really, that is the greatest blessing,” Vehige says. “We all have our strengths and we play into them. Every decision is decided on collectively. It’s just how we operate.” Congratulations to T Bar S Cattle Company on being honored as the 2021 Breeder of the Year.
The American Gelbvieh Association named T Bar S Cattle Company, Billings, Missouri, the AGA Breeder of the Year for 2021. Pictured above (left to right): Justin, Grace, Stacy, Tom and Kyle Vehige. THE PROFIT PICTURE | 63

owles Ranch Partnership is the recipient of the 2021 AGA Commercial Producer of the Year award. Powles Ranch Partnership was presented with this honor during the awards banquet of the 2021 AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration on December 10, 2021, in Oklahoma City. Powles Ranch Partnership is a commercial cow-calf operation located in the Nebraska Sandhills near Bingham, Nebraska. Today, the ranch primarily utilizes Balancer® genetics to produce their own home-raised replacement females and markettopping steer calves. The Powles family has a long and rich history in the Gelbvieh breed. Don Powles first used Gelbvieh genetics in the fall of 1972 in partnership with Phil VanDervoort. The Powles ranch was running purebred Hereford cows
and a crossbred commercial herd, but Phil convinced Don to use some Gelbvieh semen to breed his fall calving Hereford cows. This led to Powles Gelbvieh Ranch becoming AGA member #224. Don envisioned black Gelbviehs and worked to make his vision a reality, breeding the first homozygous black, homozygous polled Gelbvieh bull, POW Black Imprint 386Z, in 1992. The family sold Gelbvieh bulls for 24 years. Don loved selling bulls and talking to customers, especially when delivering bulls. Don was a true Gelbvieh advocate and always made time to talk cattle. He is credited with giving several kids Gelbvieh heifers to start their cowherds. In addition to the performance genetics the operation has become known for, a legacy of service is also credited to the Powles family name. Don’s wife, Gretchen, served as the American
Gelbvieh Gals president. Their daughter, Jana, and son, Bryon, both served on the American Gelbvieh Junior Association board of directors, and Jana served as the American Gelbvieh Ambassador. All were involved in GAIN, the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska. Today, the Powles Ranch Partnership includes Jana (Powles) Jensen, her husband, JC, their children Jada and Cameron, and Bryon and Audrey Powles. The ranching operation is a family affair. Bryon takes care of the north half of the ranch and JC the south half. Jana does all the financials and bookkeeping, while Audrey keeps cow records. The AGA Commercial Producer of the Year Award honors individuals who use Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in progressive commercial cattle operations and are proactive in their promotion of the breed.
