EPD’s - What do the Numbers Mean:

In 2012 the Gelbvieh, Balancer, Red Angus, Simmental put their EPD’s into the same system and calculated the new EPD’s. Now you will be able to compare these 3 breeds on the same EPD base. In other words you can compare the same EPD’s for Gelbvieh, Red Angus, Balancer and Simmental cattle. The Angus breed continues to do their own EPD’s – so the Angus bulls cannot be compared across breeds. Below is a brief explanation of the EPD’s: CE or CED: CE is shown in Balancer and Gelbvieh cattle. CED is shown in Red Angus and Angus. CE stands for Calving ease-CED stands for Calving Ease Direct. This EPD represents a ratio that determines how easy calves are born. The higher the number – should represent easier calving. BW: This EPD is used by all breeds. It predicts the difference in pounds for birth weight. Look at the breed average and compare. WW: This EPD is used by all breeds. It predicts the difference in pounds for weaning weight. Look at the breed average and compare. The WW EPD is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. YW: This EPD is used by all breeds. It predicts the difference in pounds for yearling weight around 365 days of age. Look at the breed average and compare. The YW EPD is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk-MK: This EPD predicts the genetic ability of a sire’s daughter to produce milk. The higher number means more milk. Marb-MB: This EPD predicts the genetic ability of a sire’s offspring to grade. This EPD along with ultrasound data predicts which genetics have a higher chance of grading Choice, Prime and etc.. REA-RE: This EPD predicts the genetic ability of a sire’s offspring Loin Eye Area. This EPD along with ultrasound data predicts Loin Eye Area which determines Yield Grade – Red Meat. CV-$B: This EPD predicts the carcass value of sire. The EPD’s are expressed in a $ value. The CV dollar value is based on Carcass Weight, Marbling, Ribeye. The $B value is based on performance, carcass weight, Marbling, and production costs. Ultrasound Information All the bulls will be weighed and measured for frame size, Ribeye area, marbling, fat thickness, and scrotal size. The bulls will also be fertility tested and will also be test free of BVD. We will post the information on our website – as soon as we receive the information. We are excited to see you on February 26th, 2014 as we will be hosting our 19th annual bull sale. We were sorry to say good bye to our good friends at Camp1A – Red Angus as they dispersed their herd of cattle this fall and will not be offering bulls in the 2014 Cattlemen’s Choice Bull Sale 2013 certainly presented some challenges in many operations – we received only 3-4 inches of precipitation from January to July – but then we had around 10 inches of rain in August and September. We were very grateful to receive the late season moisture – but it was very unusual hauling cows to pasture in August instead of April and May. Around 2/3rd’s of the herd were fed corn stalk/straw bales with DDG while the other 1/3rd grazed very short grass. In other words it was the survival of the fittest in 2013. The calves were weaned in mid-August. You will notice a bigger range in the weaning weights – a lot of this was determined by pasture conditions, hay quality and etc.. We do recommend using the EPD’S for weaning weight instead of Adjusted Weaning Weight – the EPD’s more accurately reflect the genetics of the bull. (In fact the EPD’s are 10 times more accurate than actual weights). We will be offering 8 bulls in our sale from our friends and cooperators Cooper Gelbvieh-Burdett, Ks. Many of these bulls stem from Grund Beef Genetics females. These cattle will have higher adjusted weaning weights due to better growing conditions. We are experiencing very good cattle prices and the next few years look to be very profitable for cow/calf operations. We have built a Great Base of genetics over the last 15 years by using A.I. on the majority of our cowherd. I’m always amazed that we can now have 7080# calves and wean 600-700# calves and have a finished steer of 1300#’s by the age of 14 months! We have concentrated on producing Practical, Predictable, Proven genetics that will make you Profitable. We know that Fertility, Calving Ease, Performance, Maternal, and Carcass Traits are needed and we have concentrated on ALL of these traits without chasing the latest FAD. You will notice that we are offering more 75% Balancer Bulls and this is because we believe FERTILITY is the one trait that makes you Profitable. Gelbvieh cattle excel the Beef Industry in this trait! As you study the catalog you will also find bulls that rank in the top 25% of the breed for other important traits that lead to profits. Back by popular demand is DV Auction. You again will be able to view the bulls on video and bid from your computer – if you are unable to attend the sale. CUSTOMER SERVICE & SATISFACTION SIGHT-UNSEEN GUARANTEE If you are unable to make the sale, we are offering a sight – unseen purchase program. We also will be broadcasting the sale on DV Auction to allow you to see a video of the bulls/heifers selling. We also have arranged a “different” set of eyes and person to talk to- if you would like another opinion on the cattle. Andy Jones will view the bulls/heifers and give you his honest opinion. Andy’s number is 785-769-4319. BULL CARE This year we are again offering to keep your bulls until April 1st of 2014. We will take your bull home and feed them for $3/per head/per day. As of April 1st we will work with you on delivery or you can come to the ranch and pick-up your bull. Buyer does assume risk of the bull after sale day for injury and/or death. We can provide buyers insurance sale day that will cover the bull for injury or death until breeding season is complete. If you have a problem with an injured bull – please contact us- typically we carry-over a few bulls and can provide you with a replacement bull for the breeding season. GUARANTEES All bulls selling for $2500 or more are guaranteed against breeding season injury for the first breeding season. A breeding season is defined as a 90 day period following the first turn out date of the bull. This is not an insurance policy. If a bull develops a problem, proper treatment or vet care is advisable. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided. If the buyer prefers no replacement bull, we will provide credit towards another bull in the following year, less the salvage value of the injured bull. GRU 320A is outcross genetics to a lot of high percentage Gelbvieh cattle. Gunslinger has sired some good cattle for Swanson Cattle in Nebraska. She ranks in the top 35% of the breed in performance EPD’s.

GRU 324A is one of those heifers you wonder if you should be keeping – but we can’t keep all of them. We have sold some very AFFORDABLE heifers that have flat out produced for other breeders. For example the 2013 Reserve National Champion Balancer heifer stemmed from a $1200 heifer! Note the Carcass Value of this girl.
