A Quick Guide to Herd Assessments By Dianne Coffman, AGA Director of Administration

Membership in the American Gelbvieh Association consists of two parts – annual membership dues and herd assessments. Membership dues of $75 are paid annually on your anniversary date. Herd assessments are paid on every active registered female over one year of age as of January 1 and billed after the first of the year. As an active AGA member–meaning paid memberships and herd assessments–your name and contact information is listed in the annual AGA member directory. The member directory is sent out with the August Gelbvieh World. Additionally, the member directory is included in all new AGA member packets, sent to all state association presidents, and distributed at state events and fairs throughout the year. Herd assessments serve a two-fold purpose. It verifies the active animals in your herd so the Total Herd Reporting (THR) can capture the status of all calves. The purpose of the THR is to establish a more complete database to enable AGA to make more accurate genetic predictions for Gelbvieh breeders. The second purpose is to support the operation of the AGA. The newly expanded staff of two Area Coordinators, with a third soon to be hired, is a direct result of the additional $2 of herd assessment from the 5year Plan. With the addition of Frank Padilla, the Director of Breed Promotion, and the newly designed AGA matrix organization, the AGA will be reviewing the best use of the Area Coordinators in their regions. Furthermore, a portion of your herd assessment dollars goes towards maintaining contact with commercial customers. The AGA does this by providing a free one-year subscription to Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture to any non-member or inactive member who purchases and subsequently receives a transferred registration certificate on a Gelbvieh or Balancer animal. This is a great opportunity for your customers to be informed of the programs and news in the Gelbvieh business. Every year, a member can choose between two payments plans for their herd. The choice between Traditional and One-rate will depend on your herd. The rule of thumb used at the AGA is if you register ½ of your calves then one-rate will make financial sense otherwise use the pay as you go method of Traditional. | March 2010

One-Rate Credits do expire. Calves born from January 1 to July 31 must be registered by April 15 of the following year. Calves born August 1 to December 31 must be registered by July 31 of the following year. Members can run out of credits if they register calves out of non-AMGV dams that were not on the herd assessment, purchase bred dams, register multiple ET calves, or have sets of twins. If the member runs out of credits, they will be billed $18.00 for each calf as long as it is done by the either April 15 or July 31 depending on the calf’s birth date. Every calf receives a registration certificate. Members cannot mark an animal to be computed. The One-Rate plan includes equal number of registration and transfer credits, which can be used for any animal in your herd. On the Traditional plan, a member pays $12.50 per cow and a sliding fee schedule based on the calf’s age when registration application is received in the AGA office. A transfer fee of $7.50 is based on the number of days between the sale date and the date transfer received in the AGA office, with a late fee if greater than 45 days. To avoid late fees on transfers for both the One-Rate and Traditional plans, THE TRANSFER MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE OFFICE 45 DAYS FROM THE SALE DATE LISTED ON THE TRANSFER. Regardless of the payment plan, once a member’s herd assessment has been received, pre-printed registration applications, lifetime cow summaries, and EPDs on all progeny of cows on inventory are sent. If you need this information for an up coming sale, the early return of your herd assessments gets this information to you sooner.

Making Management Decisions to Improve the AGA Most of you are into calving full swing or soon will be. We are finished calving a group of spring heifers. Our cows are now all fall calving and will start in late August. When we had commercial cows we calved in the fall. As we moved over to a purebred operation we switched to spring for some reason. In 2008 we made the decision to go back to fall. We delayed breeding that year so we had April & May calves in 2009. We again delayed breeding and in 2010 we will calve in August & September. We simply believe it worked better for us. Dryer, milder temperatures, less health issues, calves are old enough to go to stalks with momma, old enough to start creep feeding when weather turns tough. Why am I telling you all of this? It was a management decision. We all make management decisions. You make management decisions every day. I don’t care if you sweep floors for a living you still make management decisions based on your knowledge, what works, what doesn’t work, what works best for you, what is the easiest, what you can afford, or how far in debt you want to go. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Board of Directors operates in the same way. We make decision on what’s best for the AGA, our members and our commercial customers. Sometimes management decisions are not easy. Sometimes they take a lot of soul searching. As board members we have to consider not only ourselves but what is best for you, our members and vote accordingly. I know there is some controversy regarding our new AGA organizational structure. The decision to go this route was not taken lightly. There were many things to consider, such as duplication of effort, increasing efficiency, affordability and even member perception. Please see the article on page 22 in this issue that addresses the inter-workings of the new AGA staff organization, the result of a management decision. Give it a chance; we think it will work remarkably well. 12 | March 2010

We have an excellent staff that works their tails off for us, the AGA members. We have a new Director of Breed Promotion that is well received in the commercial beef business. We have great momma cows and we have a great bunch of people. Great cows and great people, what more could one ask for.

“I want to encourage you to report all your cows, keep them on the assessment and renew your AGA membership. Why you might ask? The AGA needs your support and you need the AGA.” What management decisions do you have coming? A.I. sires to select, marketing plans for the year, crop rotations, seed varieties to select, cows to cull, keep that herd sire one more year, herd assessments, cows to inventory, memberships to renew, to name a few. Gelbvieh remains the leader in innovation, milk, muscle and maternal strength. The AGA has new marketing programs in the works. We have a new computer system coming that will provide you more data power than you could have dreamed of.  The 2010 herd assessments were mailed

to all adult and junior members in midJanuary. Herd assessments must be paid to keep your memberships active – this goes for adults and juniors. Assessments are due back in the AGA office by April 15. Late fees apply if not back in the office by April 15. If you haven’t received your herd assessment, contact the AGA office. Also, be sure to fill out the member survey included in the herd assessments packet and send it back to the AGA office.

 If you’ve recently upgraded your PC, chances

are you’ve updgraded your operating system from Windows XP or earlier to Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Both Vista and 7 are compatible with HerdTrack. However, there is a work-around required sometimes during installation. Another workaround is required when saving export and back up files. Please see “Saving Files with Microsoft Vista” online under the support section of the HerdTrack page at www.gelbvieh.org for additional information.

Breed Improvement Below are a few breed improvement and management practice recommendations to consider implementing this spring. For questions, contact Susan Knights Willmon at the AGA office. Pasture Sire DNA While you are having a breeding soundness exam done on your pasture bull battery, we suggest that you also collect a DNA sample for archiving purposes. These samples can be placed in an envelope and identified with either a registration number or prefix/tattoo and stored in a file drawer for future reference. After each calf crop we run into situations where there are calves we need to sire verify. Having samples on pasture bulls is one way to make the parent verification process easier. A.I. Permits According to AGA rules, A.I. permits are required on ANY bull for which there is semen collected, even if that semen is for in-herd use. The A.I. permit process is two-fold: DNA parent verification and an A.I. permit. To parent verify a bull, first request a parent verification DNA kit from the AGA office. If either or both of the bull’s parents have not been DNA typed, kits will be included to have DNA parentage profiles completed on these parents as well. Once the appropriate DNA samples have been submitted and processed, the bull’s parentage profile is checked against the combination of both parents. After the animal has completed the parent verification process, the owner should submit a completed A.I. permit form. These forms can be found on the AGA website at http://www.gelbvieh.org/pdf/AI_Permit.pdf or can be requested from the office. The costs are $35 for each animal that must have a DNA parentage profile completed and $50 for the A.I. permit.

as part of the yearling processing. As we continue to look at mature size evaluations of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics both hip height and body condition scores can factor into these evaluations. Increasing value is being placed on docility in both cowcalf and feedlot operations. As Gelbvieh breeders, we have long prided ourselves in how our cattle perform in this area. Unfortunately we do not have any hard proof, in terms of temperament records, to quantify this to the rest of the industry. A couple of seasons of collecting temperament scores will give us the data to backup the superiority of Gelbvieh genetics in this area. Ultrasound data, also taken at this time of year, is submitted electronically to the AGA via the ultrasound processing lab. To insure that the ultrasound data is incorporated into the correct animal’s record, request a barnsheet at least one week prior to ultrasound testing. If you add any animals, please add both the prefix/tattoo and AMGV registration number to the barnsheet for the technician to process. A list of Ultrasound Guidelines Certified (UGC) technicians can be found on the AGA web site at http://www.gelbvieh.org/library_resources.htm under the ultrasound section or at www.ultrasoundbeef.com. Yearling Processing for Bulls When processing yearling bulls this spring, we recommend that any data you collect for a sale catalog or other use should also be submitted to the AGA. Submitting yearling weights and date taken is needed in order to receive updated registration papers. However, if you collect scrotal circumference measurements, hip heights and temperament scores, this data can be submitted to the AGA via yearling worksheets or HerdTrack along with the weight data. This extra information greatly enhances the AGA’s ability to produce EPDs with more accuracy over time. One means of identifying sires with different genetics for post weaning gain is to have both weaning weights and yearling weights on bulls in valid contemporary groups. This data is one of the best tools we have to help identify curve bender bulls within our Gelbvieh gene pool. Scrotal circumference data, while not required for registration, is critical to increasing accuracy of the SC (scrotal circumference) EPD. We have seen a drop in the number of SC measurements submitted in the past several years and would encourage all members to submit SC measurements to insure the integrity of our SC EPDs. Yearling Processing for Heifers For heifers, taking time to collect some performance information and archive DNA samples may provide valuable data for both long and short term selection and breeding decisions. Taking a yearling weight, hip height and body condition score on a heifer within the yearling measurement window gives us a benchmark value to further evaluate her performance later in her reproductive life. Over time, this data also provides the ability to see genetic trends and selection emphasis for replacement females. Second in importance to yearling weight is the collection of ultrasound data on replacement females. The scan weight that is taken as part of the ultrasound process can be used as the animal’s yearling weight. This weight, though, needs to be submitted on a yearling worksheet. In 2008 the AGA changed the carcass EPDs to include ultrasound records. Based on the research done prior to this, it was determined that female ultrasound data gives us an unbiased evaluation of sire differences in carcass traits. The fastest way to increase the number of animals in your herd inventory that include carcass EPDs is to ultrasound replacement females. An ultrasound record on a heifer offspring will create a carcass EPD in the next EPD run for that animal as well as its parents. That animal’s ultrasound record will also aid in the creation of carcass EPDs in future progeny. Gelbvieh Performance Advantage

The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) elected new directors and leadership during its annual convention and membership meeting January 7-9 in Denver, Colo. in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show. The membership elected five breeders to serve three year terms to the association’s Board of Directors. Newly elected board members are Brian Dunn, Sandy Knoll Farm Gelbvieh, St. John, Kan.; Gary Tilghman, Pleasant Meadows Farm, Glasgow, Ky.; and Dan Warner, Warner Beef Genetics, Beaver City, Neb. Two directors were re-elected to a second term. These directors are Mark Goes, M&P Gelbvieh and Southeast Community College, Odell, Neb.; and Nancy Wilkinson, Wilkinson Gelbvieh, Model, Colo. Four members of the Board of Directors were elected to leadership positions to serve on the AGA Executive Committee. Al Knapp of Bonner Springs, Kan. was selected as the American Gelbvieh Association President. He succeeds Vaughn Thorstenson from Shelby, S.D. Jim Beastrom, Pierre, S.D., was chosen as the association Vice President. Randy Gallaway, Mulhall, Okla., will serve as secretary and Mark Goes was elected to the treasurer’s position. ALL AGA members (including Juniors) can complete the application process for one of the levels of the GPA program. Details can also be found in the April 2009 edition of Gelbvieh World. Members achieving GPA status based on the 2009 management year will be announced in the July 2010 Herd Reference Issue of the Gelbvieh World and will be eligible to use the GPS logo in their operation’s advertising and promotional pieces. If you have further questions or need copies of these forms please call the AGA office. Residual Feed Intake (RFI) The AGA is looking to put together groups of bulls and heifers to test in several RFI facilities this year. We have a group of producers, from the AGA Convention in January, that have expressed interest and want to make sure that other members that were not in attendance in January have the opportunity to enroll their animals in this test. Please contact the office if you would like to include either bulls or heifers in a spring RFI test that would typically begin late April to early May or the fall test that would start late October to mid-November. Animals to be included in the spring test must be enrolled by March 15, 2010.

Al and Mary Knapp of Bonner Springs, Kan. were honored as the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) 2010 Member of the Year at the association’s annual convention on January 9. The AGA honors members who through their work have brought credit to the Gelbvieh breed and their association. Al and Mary Knapp, owners and operators of Triple K Gelbvieh, are distinguished recipients of this award. Triple K Gelbvieh is a family owned purebred Gelbvieh and Balancer® seedstock operation. They have been raising Gelbvieh cattle since 1996 after purchasing a purebred Gelbvieh bull for breeding some Angus based commercial heifers. When they saw what Gelbvieh added to the commercial cows and the hybrid vigor of the calves they were convinced. At the same time, their son Nick was in 4-H and wanted a Gelbvieh heifer. After a couple of years they saw the maternal differences in the Gelbvieh cows and were convinced. By 1999 they converted to solely a purebred Gelbvieh seedstock operation.

The Knapps attend 8-10 shows each year including the American Gelbvieh Junior Association National Classic, the American Royal where they serve as Gelbvieh Superintendents, the Kansas State Fair, and the Kansas Livestock Association Kansas Beef Expo and have shown several champions. Al and Mary are active members of the American Gelbvieh Association. Al and Mary both serve on the AGA Foundation committee, which Al co-chairs. Also, Al has been a member of the AGA Board of Directors and was recently elected as association president. In addition, the Knapps have a strong commitment to support young people in the beef industry. On a local level, Mary was the Glenwood 4-H Leader for 8 years and Al was a beef leader for 9 years. Since 2001, Al and Mary have served as American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) advisors and work closely with, and support the AGJA Board of Directors. “I always enjoy seeing Al and Mary at youth shows because of the fun they bring with them. It’s nothing to see them hanging out at the pool with the kids at night or just cutting up and laughing with the kids,” said Dana Stewart, AGA Director of Member Services. The Knapps have helped mentor many families in the Gelbvieh breed including the Buffo family of Lansing, Kan. In a letter of support for the Knapps, Steve Buffo recalls the mentoring relationship that they have developed with his son Cole. Steve writes, “The Knapps have taken Cole to several shows and have instilled in Cole the passion, service, and faith of the Gelbvieh breed.” Their service stretches beyond Gelbvieh. They are members of the Kansas Livestock Association, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, and the Leavenworth County Beef Improvement Association where Al served two years as president. They have also completed the MBA Certified Masters in Beef Advocacy program. In 2008, Triple K took another opportunity to serve while promoting Gelbvieh by hosting the North East KLA/Leavenworth County Beef Improvement Association tour.

American Gelbvieh Foundation Hat After several months of anticipation, the American Gelbvieh Foundation auctioned the first sculptures of the limited series “The Legacy of Giving.” The sculpture series portrays Bud Beastrom’s cowboy hat that was passed during an AGA board meeting to solicit funds to keep the association going in its early days. A large crowd was on hand as Bud Beastrom told the story of the hat at the Breeder’s Choice and AGA Social during the AGA convention. Dr. Glen Wehner, Foundation Committee Co-Chair, was the master of ceremonies for the event while Roger Emigh, World Champion Auctioneer and fellow Gelbvieh breeder, auctioned the hats. The first sculpture, the artist’s proof and prototype for the series, went to Beastrom for the winning bid of $13,000 to purchase the replica of his hat. This bid set a strong pace for the remaining sculptures. Five more sculptures were auctioned along with two additional artist’s proofs. At the close of the auction, the Foundation had raised $32,250 to assist with research, education, and scholarships.

Bartee Inducted into Gelbvieh Association Hall of Fame John Bartee, Sr., of Clarksville, Tenn., was recently inducted into the American Gelbvieh Association Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame presentation was held on Saturday, January 9 at the 2010 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) annual convention. Each year the American Gelbvieh Association honors deserving individuals who have left their mark on the Gelbvieh breed and Bartee is no exception. “John Bartee has undisputedly contributed more to the advancement of the cattle industry in general and to the Gelbvieh breed in particular than anyone else in the state of Tennessee,” commented Dale Walker, Secretary/Treasurer of the Tennessee Gelbvieh Association. Bartee helped organize the first meeting of the Tennessee Gelbvieh Association, in which he is still actively involved. Additionally, he has been active with the AGA serving on several committees and as the association president in 2000. Not just a supporter of Gelbvieh, John is a supporter of agriculture. He has spent his career working for the Tennessee Department of Extension. He currently serves as the University of Tennessee Extension Director for Montgomery County. “I can’t say enough about Mr. Bartee and his commitment to the breed. He works tirelessly to help commercial beef producers incorporate Gelbvieh into their herds,” said Dana Stewart, AGA Director of Member Services. “He has diligently worked with the AGA Maternal Edge Sale for the last three years, helping to make it one of the most successful commercial female sales in the state.” Furthermore, John is an avid supporter of youth programs. John Sr. and his son helped to organize and host the first American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) national junior show east of the Mississippi River in 1995. Their efforts resulted in the largest, most successful junior show at the time. In 1988, John began collecting carcass data from Tennessee’s largest steer show, taking carcass ribeye and backfat

measurements. In the 2009 show, 22 of the 157 steers were Gelbvieh influenced. These 22 steers grossed $93 more per head than the average of all other steers in the show. A red Balancer® steer had the champion carcass. John, his wife Lois, their children and grandchildren are all involved in the Gelbvieh breed in one way or another. Lois often accompanies John to meetings and shows. Last summer she even volunteered her talents to make homemade cupcakes for the AGJA Eastern Regional show hosted by the Tennessee Junior Gelbvieh Association. To promote Gelbvieh, John and his family show cattle at several shows. John and his son, John Jr., exhibited cattle at the first Gelbvieh show at the Tennessee Beef Agribition in the 1990s. John’s grandchildren are the fifth generation of Bartees to show cattle. “John readily lends guidance and advice from years of experience. It has truly been an honor and pleasure to work with him as an AGA staff member,” added Stewart.

The AGA’s New Matrix Organization By Al Knapp, AGA President

The American Gelbvieh Association has been a leader in innovation within the beef industry with Balancers, SmartCross, Gelbvieh Profit Partners and several more innovations that improve the breed and as breeders our programs. It’s not surprising that the executive committee and the board of directors have rolled out a new matrix organization for the AGA’s staff personnel. Following the August Board meeting and the resignation of the executive director, the executive committee returned to the AGA office in early September to meet with each staff member and review their individual position and responsibilities. As we were interviewing each staff member we came to more fully appreciate how blessed the AGA was to have such a talented, dedicated staff. We also came to realize that two-thirds of the former executive director’s responsibilities were to supervise at least two staff positions that didn’t need supervising: Dianne Coffman, Director of Administration, and Susan Willmon, Director of Breed Improvement. Both of these ladies are extremely qualified and quite capable of performing their responsibilities without oversight. The remaining one-third of the executive director’s position was for breed marketing and promotion. This is an area of responsibility that really needs focus. Another consideration was the reduced AGA revenue brought on by reduced cow assessments

and the overall reduction in the national cow herd. This led to the decision to hire a director of breed promotion rather than another executive director. Several years ago the board of directors at the advice of the executive director decided to not fill the vacant position of our field representatives. In hind sight this was a big marketing breed promotion mistake. Last year the board decided to cutback on some of the advertising that had been initiated a few years prior on RFD TV and Superior Livestock and shift 5-year plan money to hire three regional area coordinators. At this point two are in place and the third is in the works. With our new director of breed promotion, Frank Padilla, on board, the AGA now has three, and soon to be four, sets of boots on the ground with the soul focus of increasing demand for Gelbvieh genetics and improving the value for each breeder and their commercial customer. Now there are those that would question who’s in charge? As you can see from Figure 1 we have three directors each responsible for different aspects of AGA business. Each is accountable for their own areas of responsibility and each is accountable to one another. There will be numerous times that the three will have to work together to accomplish the greater good for the AGA. With

Thank You Sponsors! this in mind the executive committee has held a team building session with the three directors and a resolution matrix has been developed. The three directors will have to work through any item that becomes an issue and reach a consensus. If a consensus is not forthcoming in a set amount of time they will contact the executive committee to make the final determination, thus preventing a stalemate that would stymie progress. Another change being implemented is a new 360 degree review process. This process is widely accepted in business today. Rather than an employee being reviewed solely by his/her supervisor, the employee is reviewed by their subordinates, peers and supervisor. This review process is done via a web based service and is totally anonymous. This will allow each staff person to understand how they are perceived by their fellow staff members and can be used as a tool for self improvement. This will also allow the board and executive committee to better understand staff dynamics and morale. The position descriptions for the three directors are available on the AGA website. In brief their responsibilities are as follows: Director of Breed Promotion The director of breed promotion is the official spokesperson for the American Gelbvieh Association and will also lead the development and coordinate implementation of AGA’s vision statement, breed goals and various programs designed to grow the Gelbvieh breed into the Continental Breed of Choice. The Director of Breed Promotion is responsible for the development and implementation of AGA marketing strategies, goals, objectives and programs creating maximum value for Gelbvieh genetics for AGA members and their commercial customers.

Director of Administration The director of administration is responsible for the day to day management of the AGA office and staff including all financial matters in a fiscally responsible manner. Support the development and implementation of AGA goals, objectives and programs creating maximum value for Gelbvieh genetics and AGA members. Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the AGA herd book, registered and hybrid data base and be responsible for operation, security and maintenance of the AGA data processing system. Director of Breed Improvement The director of breed improvement is responsible for the identification, development and implementation of AGA research programs and genetic trend analysis necessary to focus membership on value added traits and genetics. The director of breed improvement will be responsible for and lead the computer software conversion currently underway. We have had several positive comments about this new innovative AGA matrix organizational approach from other breed officials. We believe this organization will serve the AGA membership quite well. It will be more efficient and less costly than our previous organization. Our three directors are each well qualified in their respective fields. With the changes we have implemented and the accountability in place there is no reason to be concerned about the AGA staff.

The Top 12 Benefits of Animal Transfers During the 2008-2009 fiscal year, the American Gelbvieh Association registered 37,448 animals and transferred 11,694 animals. Roughly, for every 3 animals registered, only 1 animal was transferred. Below is a map indicating the AGA registration and transfer numbers by state for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. As AGA members, you may not be aware of the many benefits of transferring animals. Below are the top reasons why every member should transfer every animal sold to another breeder. Whether the animal you sell goes into a registered herd or a commercial herd, there are many reasons to take the simple extra step and transfer those registration certificates.

• Non-member buyers also receive a Gelbvieh information packet with an introductory letter from the AGA, fact sheets, the crossbreeding brochure, and an AGA member application. Starting in 2010, the information packet will also include a survey to find out more information about the people who purchase Gelbvieh cattle and their involvement in the cattle industry. • With a registration certificate, the buyer has a way to keep track of the pedigrees in their herd. Having a transferred registration paper has saved a lot of producers the cost of genetic defect testing as they were able to determine if they had potential carriers in their herds.

Benefits for the Seller: • For one-rate members in good standing, the cost of an animal transfer within 45 days of sale is one herd assessment credit. So essentially, it’s FREE and a good way to use your credits. The cost of a transfer for members in good standing on the traditional payment plan is only $7.50, if transferred within 45 days of sale. • Transferring a registration paper is a good service you can provide your customers. Even if they say they don’t want the paper, transfer it anyway and tell them it’s a free service you provide your buyers. • Sending a transferred registration paper to the buyer gives you one more contact with your customers to help build relationships; include a thank you and your business card when you send the paper. • The next time your customers look for a bull or a replacement female, you can look at the registration papers and help them make their next purchase based on the pedigrees and EPDs of their last purchase. Transfers – Just Do It!

• The size and yearly success of a breed association is measured by the number of animals registered per year and the number of animals transferred per year. • Transfers are one way to measure how many animals are sold. The current numbers of transfers reflects that only a small percentage of Gelbvieh cattle are sold each year. We know this is not the case, but without transfer numbers we have no proof otherwise. • Transfers help generate a little extra income for the AGA to help fund programs and services. • The AGA uses the registration and transfer numbers per state to help decide where to spend advertising and promotion dollars. States with more registrations and transfers could potentially have a greater presence of AGA advertising. Topping the sale was lot 16, BAG Wicked 60W. Bar Arrow Cattle Co., Phillipsburg, Kan., consigned this February 2009 Balancer heifer sired by Bennett Performer. Michael Ring, Oregon, Ill., purchased this heifer for $5,500. The second high seller was lot 15, XXB Ms Blk Eyed Pea 902U ET. Boehler Gelbvieh, Orleans, Neb., consigned the December 2008 Balancer heifer sired by Rito 1I2. Eagle Pass of Highmore, S.D. and Leachman Cattle Co. of Colorado were the winning bidders at $5,200. Another top lot was consigned by Poker City Ranch, Agenda, Kan. Lot 85A was the third high seller at $4,900. On Test on test Balancer® Bull Tops Clemson Bull Test In the 2010 Clemson Bull Test near Pendleton, S.C., the highest indexing bull with a value of 8.72 is a Balancer® bull consigned by Black Crest Farms of Sumter, S.C. This Gelbvieh-Angus cross bull consistently posted some of the highest average daily gains throughout the 112 days of the test and finished with a performance leading ADG of 5.09 pounds per day. The bull, with the tag number 37, also finished with the fourth highest weight per day of age of 3.63 pounds per day. “The 37 senior Balancer® bull’s performance was spectacular. His average daily gain of 5.09 pounds per day was 38 percent above the test average of 3.70 pounds per day in very wet and muddy conditions for half the test,” commented Dr. Larry W. Olson, Clemson Extension animal scientist and bull testing program coordinator. A total of 41 bulls representing seven breeds were fed during this year’s test. The program is sponsored by Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service and the South Carolina Cattlemen’s Association. The 2010 Clemson Bull Test Sale was held February 6. Kansas The Kansas Bull Test at Tipton, Kan. completed its 56-day weight, test midpoint report on January 4, 2010. There are 9 Gelbvieh bulls and 15 Balancer® bulls consigned by five breeders from Missouri and Kansas. For the 56-day report, the Gelbvieh bulls had an average ADG of 4.40 lbs/day and average WDA of 3.53 lbs/day. The Balancer® bulls average ADG was 4.78 lbs/day and average WDA was 3.58 lbs/day. The bulls complete their 112-day test program on March 1. The Kansas Bull Test sale is on April 7 at the Mitchell County 28 | March 2010

Leading the Gelbvieh bulls on test is a bull consigned by Elmer McWilliams, Hilltop Farms of Asbury, Mo. This March 2009 son of RUP Purple Yokon 301P had an index of 111 with an ADG of 5.3 lbs/day, which was the highest of the group, and WDA of 5.56 lbs/day. A second Hilltop Farms bull sired by MHOG Scottie had the highest WDA of the group at 3.83 lbs/day. Red Maple Gelbvieh, Jamestown, Kan., own the Balancer® bull, sired by MLH Goldrush Gold Miner, with the highest ADG at 6.18 lbs/day and the third highest WDA bull at 3.84 lbs/day. A second Balancer® bull owned by Red Maple Gelbvieh and sired by MLH Goldrush Retail Gold had the highest WDA at 3.97 lbs/day and posted an ADG of 6.05 lbs/day. The other breeders in the Kansas Bull Test are Benny McWilliams and Brad McWilliams, both of Hilltop Farms, Asbury, Mo., and Dry Creek Farm, Osborne, Kan. Montana A total of 51 Gelbvieh and Balancer® bulls by seven breeders entered the Midland Bull Test in Columbus, Mont. The first intermediate report puts the average performance of the bulls at 2.90 lbs/day for ADG and 3.19 lbs/day for WDA. The bulls at Midland will be both performance and RFI (Residual Feed Intake) tested during the 120-day test. The sale will be held on April 7. The February 2009 son of MCFG Bruce Almighty posted an ADG of 4.09 lbs/day and a WDA of 3.69 lbs/day. The second highest ADG bull at 3.80 lbs/ day is a Balancer®, sired by EDR Early 218R and entered by NN Bar Ranch, Creston, Wash. Middle Creek Farms, Inc., Bozeman, Mont, owns the second highest WDA bull with 3.62 lbs/day. This Balancer® bull is sired by Woodhill Foresight. Virginia The 84-day report for the 2009-2010 Virginia BCIA Bull Tests was taken on January 12. In the Southwest Virginia Senior Bull Test, six Gelbvieh bulls averaged 3.52 lbs/day ADG and 2.81 lbs/day WDA. For the SW VA Junior Bull Test, four Gelbvieh bulls averaged 4.27 lbs/day ADG and 3.40 lbs/day WDA. The SW VA Bull Tests are held at the Hillwinds Farm in Dublin, Va. Senior bulls are on test for 112-days from October 19 through February 9. Junior bulls are tested for 133 days from October 19 to March 2. The bull test sale will be held March 27. In the senior test, the Gelbvieh bull with highest ADG at 3.87 lbs/day is a son of RLS Kaiser Fortune 344S entered by Flowing Spring Gelbvieh, Atkins, Va. Little Windy Hill Farms owns the Gelbvieh bull with the highest WDA at 3.48 lbs/day. The WDA performance of this LWHF Energizer 128R ET son is in the top 8 percent of all the bulls on the senior test. Leading the junior test, is a bull sired by FSG Cocoa 77S with an ADG of 3.87 lbs/day. The highest WDA at 3.29 lbs/day is a son of FSG Mr Tank 61P. The four bulls in the junior test are entered by Flowing Spring Gelbvieh. Washington The 2009-2010 Washington Cattlemen’s Association and Washington State University All-Breed Bull Test has five Balancer® bulls on test entered by NN Bar Ranch, Creston, Wash. At the 40-day report the bulls had an average weight of 826.8 pounds and average performance of 3.53 lbs/day ADG and 2.86 lbs/day WDA. The Washington bull test is a 120-day test, which began on November 4 and will finish on March 5. The sale will be held on March 24 at 12:30 p.m. at the WSU Research Station in Prosser, Wash. On October 17, the Kentucky and Tennessee Associations sponsored the Fall Gelbvieh Classic held at Knoxville, Tenn. This annual event will be held in Kentucky in the fall of 2010. This year’s event brought together an outstanding group of Gelbvieh genetics from the Southeast. A large gathering certainly appreciated the quality presented. Topping the sale was the Lot 4 bull. Hickory Hills Farm bought this double black, double polled Granite 200P2 sale feature. Several bidders in the crowd and on the phone looked to add this herd sire prospect to their program. CKJ Gelbvieh of Collins, Iowa was the successful bidder at $3,900. Clay John Farms bought a stout, black Bennett Ideal cow/calf pair bred back to BKK O’Charlie 2T (Rolex/Sugar). This female was the front pasture kind. This pair found their way to Pleasant Meadows Farm of Glasgow, Ky. for $3,200. Lazy S Gelbvieh consigned a three-quarter sister to their herd sire, Manchoman. This black Mach One female had donor written all over her. She was safe in calf to Carolina Fortune for a heifer calf. This female found her new home with Coles Bend Cattle Company of Smiths Grove, Ky. for $3,100. Hickory Hills Farm bought several outstanding females including Lot 26/26A that sold for $3,200. This Governor female sported a fancy Solution heifer calf that will be highly competitive this next show season. MGA Commda 380N is an October 2003 red purebred Gelbvieh cow sired by MGA Idol 170L and bred for a March calf by Extra Hot. Lewis Smith, Willard, Mo., purchased this female for $2,300. The top selling cow-calf pair was lot 11/11A, a March 2005 red purebred Gelbvieh cow with a fall born calf sired by Extra Hot. Integrity of the Game Baseball has been coined the American pastime. Like many of us, I have grown up a baseball fan. When I was young, I was amazed by the big sluggers who could crack a ball over the fence like it was nothing. To me, these superstars of the major sports were my heroes. Like many kids my age, I dreamed about some day being a professional athlete. However, in the past few years, it has become more apparent that the superheroes I looked up to as a child were actually cheating and robbing baseball from the true spirit of the sport. As my friend and I watched our latest hero admit to using performance enhancing drugs, we were both in a state of shock. The only words my friend could say was, “Is there no integrity left in the game?” At first, I did not entirely grip the deep meaning of what my friend had just told me. After a few days, I started to understand what he meant. Even though he was referring to the sport of baseball, his question can apply to all forms of competition. When we are young and learning how to play games, the thrill of actually playing is more important than the outcome. The only time we break the rules is when we don’t know the rules. However, as we grow

older, we lose the sensation of playing the game and place all of the importance on winning. We take on the assumption that if we lose, then the experience from playing the game was a waste of time. The pressure of competition leads us to develop a different interpretation of right and wrong even to the point where the idea that it’s not cheating if everyone is doing it. We find ways to bend the rules to our favor even if it hurts the other competitors because we are so thirsty for the taste of victory. I know that whenever there is competition there will be forms of cheating. I am writing this article to challenge you to keep your own integrity when not only showing but also raising cattle. There are a lot easier paths to the top than the road paved in integrity and honesty, but I promise you that only this road will lead you to true victory. Trophies and ribbons will fade with age, and the money won will be spent. However, the memory of winning the honest way will never be forgotten. Remember that you may be a child’s superhero, and your actions may be a large influence on them. Regain your integrity and believe in the true spirit of the sport.

Junior News junior news Haglund Donation Heifer Sets Pace for a Strong Year for AGJA

Lexi Drager from Peetz, Colo., was the winner of the Haglund donation heifer. Here Lexi is meeting her new heifer for the first time.

The 16th donation heifer from the Haglund Ranch in Brockway, Mont., raised nearly $12,000 to help fund important AGJA programs for 2010. When the lucky ticket was drawn, Lexi Drager from Peetz, Colo., won the March 2009 red, Balancer heifer, Ms Lone Star Classic 10W. Tiana Garcia, AGJA member from Las Animas, Colo., sold the winning ticket.

Phil and Dolores Haglund started the annual tradition of giving a heifer to AGJA and Jim and Genny Priest, the newest owners of the Haglund Ranch, have continued the tradition. Their generous gift provides the means to fund several AGJA activities including shows, leadership opportunities, and outreach with 4-H and FFA programs. Special thanks to the Tom Rea family of Berthoud, Colo., for caring for and fitting the heifer for National Western Stock Show where she was shown and the drawing took place. American Live Stock Insurance also provided 30 days of insurance following the raffle. While itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nearly impossible to list everyone who purchased a ticket, AGJA members thank each of you for every ticket purchased. Several tickets were sold prior to the National Western Stock Show by AGJA members and through Gelbvieh World. During the stock show, AGJA members used their sales skills to market tickets to Gelbvieh breeders throughout the week and several AGA members got caught up in the moment during the ticket auction held in conjunction with the AGA and Breederâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choice Bull Futurity social. AGA Registry System Conversion Update Below is the information presented during the Annual Meeting at the AGA Convention about the computer conversion, which includes an update on the schedule and some of the functionality of the new system. be in the AGA office mid-march to install the initial test system. AGA staff will test the initial system for a period of 30-45 days. Upon completion of the initial test the Creo staff will take another month or so to make additional changes. Phase II will involve a data conversion of existing data from the AGA registry database and then the new system will be installed and both systems will run in parallel for a period of 30 days. After the system is determined to be functioning properly the office portion of the new system will go “live”. The anticipated timing for this phase is May – June. When will the members be able to enter data on-line? Phase III will involve the addition of the on-line modules. Testing on those modules should take place after Junior Classic in July. Testing will involve a small group of beta-testers from the membership. After the on-line modules are working they will be rolled out to the membership in the August to September timeframe. How will AGA members be able to use the new on-line capability of the new system? For members that have HerdTrack the system will work basically as it does today. Instead of emailing us a file however, you will simply upload the file to the online system. Work will process and if the work is free of errors an updated file will be available for download back to the member. For those members that do not have HerdTrack there will be several options for submitting data to the AGA. Members that do not have a high-speed internet connection will be able to download some spreadsheet tools. Data can be entered on the spreadsheet and then uploaded to the system. This should provide some basic connectivity to members dealing with slower connection speeds. For members with high-speed internet connections they can also download the spreadsheet tools to upload data to the new system. Other options will be a web based input screen where data, similar to

what is on the registration application, can be added to animals in a member’s inventory. What new capabilities will we have with the new system? One of the greatest benefits with this new system is that it is real-time. So if new calves are entered into the database on one day and processed with no errors, they will be able to be displayed on the web search engines following that processing. Forms like ultrasound barnsheets and weight worksheets can be printed on demand by the member rather than being requested from the office. Registration certificates can be stored on-line rather than being printed which should insure that when they are printed by a member the information is up to date with the latest performance and pedigree information. How will AGA members get training on this new system? Currently the plan is to offer members training through a variety of methods. We hope to work with many of the state associations to offer training as part of a fall meeting or field day. Other tools will be available such as training videos available on the web and as DVDs. We anticipate offering training at some of the major fall events such as the N.I.L.E., N.A.I.L.E., and American Royal as well as at the AGA convention in January. While change can present some challenges, we as a staff are excited about the opportunities for increasing the types of services we offer our members. Quicker data turnaround, less paper mailed to you and more reporting capabilities on the data that is currently being submitted are just a couple of the items that will be a byproduct of this transition. As part of this process we will be converting the Canadian and New Zealand Associations databases as well. The above schedule may need to be adjusted as we move through the various stages of the conversion process. Watch for continued updates from the AGA office as we move through this conversion process.

View from the Field view from the field A Cold Trip to See Hot Bulls in the Dakotas By Don Danell, AGA Area Coordinator

In early December, I took a fourday trip through North and South Dakota. While the temperature never got above -10 degrees and the wind never seemed to quit, I received warm welcomes from six breeders and saw a hot offering of Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh Balancer sale bulls. Another real plus of these visits was the opportunity to see some of the dams that produced those fine bulls. The trip began in Selby, S.D., with a visit to Ken and Vaughn Thorstenson at Thorstenson Gelbvieh and Angus. Due to the heavy rains in October, they were still in the fields harvesting corn – I had no idea it ever had to be done in such extreme cold. The Thorstenson’s have put in a GrowSafe system to measure Residual Feed Intake (RFI) of their bulls. They have been able to test all of their sale bulls and have the RFI data to report to interested buyers and the AGA. When checking out Thorstenson’s herd sire battery I saw the 2009 NWSS Champion Futurity Bull, DVE Davidson Powerhouse 13U. I also saw some of the top RFI bulls purchased from the 2009 Midland Bull Test Sale. The next stop on the trip was to Eagle Pass Ranch in Highmore, S.D. Steve Munger was getting ready for his commercial female sale in Hub City, near Aberdeen, S.D. They were sorting through some heifers to put a lot together for a

phone bid customer. In his sale bull pen, I got another look at the GrowSafe RFI system. This new ability for measuring RFI should prove to be a valuable tool to producers and their buyers. In addition, I checked out his Denverbound show string. It is fun to see such high caliber cattle being prepared to go to the show. I also got a chance to check out this year’s National Grand Champion Balancer Bull, EGL Northern Dancer U659, before he went to Denver and gained that title. The next morning took us to Hub City to watch his fine purebred and commercial females sell. From there, I headed to Pearson Cattle Company in Lake City, S.D. to see what Neal Pearson was up to. I was humbled to see another hard working group battling the -10 degree weather to harvest their corn. Neal took some time to show me his upcoming sale bulls and even gave me a look at the established cow herd that produced that impressive set of Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh Balancer bulls. Then it was on to North Dakota to visit Ed Kalianoff at KalKota Ranch in Steele. I toured another pen of quality Gelbvieh and Gelbvieh Balancer bulls before taking a drive through the ‘Mamas’ that produced them. Ed then showed me his elite set of cattle that were consigned to North Dakota’s Golden Rule Sale. The next leg of my tour took me to Chimney Butte Ranch and Doug Hillie,

in Mandan, N.D. I was first treated to a viewing of his yearling sale bulls before heading up to the winter pasture to check out the females responsible for that fine set of bulls. After a quick peek at some promising bred heifers, we went to look at the herdsire pen. This is the home of DAR Pure Power, the ABS Global A.I. sire out of FHG Flying H Exclusive x RTC Atlas. The last stop was to Miller Gelbvieh Farm in Glen Ullin, N.D. Lee Miller and I did not have much daylight left by the time I got there, but it was a very enjoyable visit. I got a quick look at some of his excellent sale bulls and his herdsire pen. We spent the next couple of hours talking Gelbvieh and the direction of our breed. Upon leaving there (well after dark) with some 400 miles left to reach home, I had plenty of time to ponder the remarkable groups of animals I had seen on the trip. Seeing the operations of various breeders is a privilege and a great learning experience. To Ken, Vaughn, Steve, Neal, Ed, Doug, and Lee, I want to say Thank You for the hospitality and Congratulations for a job well done in keeping our breed moving into the future. Unfortunately, I had to drive right by many of our breeders’ ranches, as there just wasn’t enough time to stop and see them all. My apologies to those breeders and I hope you will allow me to visit your places the next time I travel to the Dakotas.

The 3rd Annual You-Pick-Em Bull and Select Heifer Sale started out as a cold but beautiful sunny day in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Lots of repeat buyers and some news ones to were at the sale. They all enjoyed a great PIG PICK’N lunch and good fellowship before the sale. Top Selling Gelbvieh Bulls

Lot 2 – A September 2008 homozygous black and polled son of Montana Proud and a CTR Echo daughter topped the sale. Kenneth Alger of Stanly, Va. won the bid at $3,350. Lot 6 – An October 2008 homozygous black and polled son of DCSF Granite 200P2 and a CTR Highlite daughter had lots of friends and the bidding was strong. This bull had a 75 pound birth weight, 834 pound adjusted 205 weaning weight and a 1,348 pound yearling weight. Mr. Alger also purchased this lot for $3,300. Top Selling Balancer Bulls Lot 14 – A January 2009 son of S102 and a Titanium daughter that has lots of calving ease and big growth numbers sold to a many times past buyer and a good friend, Gale Rippey from Galax, Va., for $2,400. Lot 4 – A September bull that was about as good as you can make one out of Discovery and a Jack Pot daughter sold to a new buyer, Shelby Lineberry also from Galax for $2,400. Select Heifers Lot 31 – A two year old heifer with a bull calf at side sired by N Bar Primetime was a consignment from Dr. Tom Levelle and sold to David Danner of Max Meadows, Va., for $1,950. Lot 27 – A spring bred heifer out of a DCSF Granite 200P2 and a KCF Bennett Kingpin daughter, due to calve to S102 in late March, sold to Steve Fanning from Bland, Va., for $1,800. The 2010 Champion bull in the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity was CIRS 278U2 entered by Circle S Ranch.

Circle S Ranch from Canton, Kan. entered the top bull in the 2010 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity held at the National Western Stock Show on January 9. CIRS 278U2 is a November 2008 son of EGL Fosters LO17E. Members of the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity entered 14 Gelbvieh bulls in the 2010 event. The preliminary judging took place in the morning at the Stockyard Arena at the National Western Stock Show. The top three finalists were selected and final judging was held later that evening at “Bulls in the Ballroom” at the Red Lion Hotel, Denver, Colo. For entering the champion futurity bull,

Runners up in the bull futurity were BDCG DC 10U1 shown by Kansas Connection, Sharon Springs, Kan., and EGL Northern Pacific W026 ET shown by Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, S.D. The champion futurity bull was sold at the 2010 Higher Standard National Gelbvieh Sale. CIRS 278U2 sold for $13,000 to The Two Step Ranch, Farley, Iowa; Circle S Ranch; and Sunset Ridge Farm, Griffin, Ga. Davidson Gelbvieh, Ponteix, SK., was the lucky winner of the sale proceeds.

Davidson Awarded Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Scholarship Matthew Davidson, Duncan, S.C., was the recipient of the 2010 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity $1,000 Scholarship. The scholarship winner was announced at the American Gelbvieh Association and Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity social on Saturday, January 9 as part of the AGA annual convention. Davidson is attending Clemson University where he majors in Agriculture Mechanization and Business. He is the son of Donna and Bruce Davidson. Davidson is a member of the South Carolina Gelbvieh Junior Association and the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. He owns a herd of registered Gelbvieh cattle and has exhibited at many local, state, and national shows including the American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic. After graduation, Matthew plans to continue to raise Gelbvieh cattle and to promote the breed. In one letter of recommendation it states, “[Matthew] exhibits those qualities of fairness, leadership, and maturity whether winning or losing. These outstanding character qualities will be an asset to any organization.”

he National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Pen Bull Show at the 2010 National Western Stock Show impressed judge Dan Hoge, Kewanee, Ill., with the quality and functionality of the bulls exhibited. The Pen Bull Show was held on January 10 in Denver, Colo. “The progress of a breed is not determined by the best cattle of the breed, but by the average of the animals of any particular breed. The average of the bulls exhibited in the pen bull show was outstanding and prove the progress of the Gelbvieh breed,” said judge Hoge. “The Gelbvieh breed has not lost sight of the need to produce functional, sound, commercially-focused cattle.” Judge Hoge started off the show by commenting on the quantity of performance testing that has been conducted within the breed. “There is no other Continental breed of cattle that has been more thoroughly performance tested in their country of origin than the Gelbvieh breed and that’s a fact,” noted Hoge. The grand champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls was exhibited by Judd Ranch, Inc. of Pomana, Kan. The average weight of this pen was 1,182 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 3.51 pounds. The average frame score was 6.5 and the pen had an average actual scrotal

circumference of 41.5 centimeters at 336 days of age. The average EPD profile of this pen is as follows: CE 105, BW 0.8, WW 36, YW 71, Milk 13, TM 31, Gest -3.0, CED 104, SC 0.8, and FM $8.70. Eagle Pass Ranch of Highmore, S.D. exhibited the reserve grand champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls. This pen had an average age of 341 days, weight of 1,185, weight per day of age of 3.48, frame score of 6.3, and scrotal circumference of 38.8 centimeters. The average EPD profile of this pen is as follows: CE 105, BW 2.3, WW 48, YW 86, Milk 19, TM 44, Gest -0.9, CED 104, SC 0.4, and FM $16.07. Judd Ranch, Inc. also exhibited the champion pen of five Gelbvieh bulls. At an average of 344 days of age, this pen posted the following averaged measurements: weight 1,150 pounds, WDA 3.34, frame score 5.8, and scrotal circumference 41.0 centimeters. The average EPD profile for this pen of five bulls is as follows: CE 106, BW 0.0, WW 38, YW 72, Milk 13, TM 32, Gest -3.6, CED 103, SC 1.0, and FM $8.43. At the conclusion of the show, Hoge was excited to go back to Blackhawk Community College where he has been teaching students for over 40 years and express to them the impact of the Gelbvieh breed on the beef industry. “The younger generation of students in agriculture classrooms that come from show steer and show heifer backgrounds are not aware of the contribution the Gelbvieh breed can make. I hope we can change that,” added Hoge.
