Gelbvieh $Green$ … Economic relief for the beef industry There is lots of talk about economic relief packages in these troubled times. It is no small task to try to blend government action that usually lacks finesse with the delicate workings of a tired economy. The jury is still out. In the news mix, every once in awhile, is a self-help story about someone or some small company that has found a solution and making the best of these times. It’s kind of refreshing. That got me to thinking, what beef breed is better positioned to provide some economic relief to cow-calf producers, feeders and the meat industry? We’ve said it before; Gelbvieh genetics are best positioned to cut input costs and create more end value than any major beef breed. Have you told that to your neighbors? My column last month was on “talking points” to help you sell Gelbvieh, I’ve had some favorable feedback, and evidence that our message is getting out to the commercial industry. Here’s more information you can use. We’ve completed the second year of our SmartCross research utilizing the cowherd at Colorado State University’s Maxwell Ranch. Angus and Angus x Hereford cows were A.I. bred to Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus bulls. The first goal was to demonstrate the advantages of crossbreeding with Gelbvieh vs. making high percentage Angus cattle. The second goal was to demonstrate the power of Gelbvieh influence in creating more dollar value. The third was to refute the MARC across breed EPD adjustment for yearling weight, since the Angus, Balancer and Gelbvieh sires used were popular bulls with high accuracy growth EPDs within their respective Herdbooks. We individually priced the cattle based on quality grid and yield grade grid premiums/ discounts and carcass weight under a low Choice/Select spread and a high spread market scenario. Under BOTH market scenarios guess which breed had the lowest end value…Angus! In a low spread market the Gelbvieh sired cattle had the highest value beating the Angus by $53.17 per head. In a high spread market the Balancer cattle garnered the most dollars beating the Angus by $36.67 per head. If you want more of the details stay tuned to the October Profit Picture tabloid publication. We’ll roll out the complete results there as that | September 2009

publication goes to 30,000 cattlemen. The results of this research go hand-in-hand with what we’ve been saying about carcass value and our Carcass Value EPD in the July Herd Reference, the talking points last month, and the results of the TCSCF steer test with 900 sires of all breeds represented. We just completed a survey through Drovers that included bovine veterinarians as well as cow-calf producers. One hundred percent of the responding vets recommend that their cow-calf clientele CROSSBREED. Comparing Gelbvieh to the other continental breeds, veterinarians give us high marks in the reproductive traits, mature cow size and temperament, traits that stick in their minds from several days of preg checking. Is your vet informed on all of the Gelbvieh advantages? The results of the survey also indicate that there is a misconception over the economic impact of straight breeding and the lack of heterosis on longevity and fertility and the resulting increase in replacement rate. Data discussed at this spring’s BIF meeting indicates that a cow has to be 5 to 6 years old before she breaks even, in other words covers her development costs and lower weaning production as a young cow. If you’ve got a bunch of straight Angus commercial cows and they start leaving the herd at 10 years of age, well you get the picture. Gelbvieh’s longevity and a little hybrid vigor can contribute a lot to economic recovery. Don’t forget the MARC data on Gelbvieh’s mature cow size and our ability to bolster weaning weight. There is not a better breed to cut costs and maximize output value. Good news travels fast. I had a call last week from the publisher of a state cattlemen’s association magazine wanting the details of the TCSCF test and the high-ranking Gelbvieh sire for a feature in his magazine. It turned out that a conversation with one Gelbvieh breeder in his state, armed with a talking point, got a lot of free and positive press for the Gelbvieh breed. Arm yourself with the facts; this is the time to carry the positive message to your neighborhood cattle producers, your vet, the local sale barn, your county and state cattlemen’s association and your state’s extension staff.

Learning Lessons from Our Scrapes As many of you probably heard we had a great Jr. Show in Des Moines. My family and I attended and had a wonderful time. Iowa even managed to provide weather that didn’t require me to shed all my clothes; the weather and the hospitality were great. Some of you probably heard that my oldest daughter had a “brush” with her heifer. In the showmanship contest Gina dropped her comb (not a good idea) and as she bent down to pick it up her heifer kicked her in the face. I’ve got to give her credit – she finished the class with dirt and a hoof print on her face. Now, three weeks later it is almost healed over (yes, she literally had the skin scrapped off her check). Hopefully that’s not her only memory of the 2009 Jr. Classic, but I’ll bet she won’t easily forget it, as she was pretty shook up as she left the class that day.

Each one of us needs to take this next selling season (whether a good one or a tough one) and make a concerted effort to promote our breed to the commercial cattlemen in each one of our areas.

Some of us have learned lessons the hard way just as Gina did. As it happened, I reflected back on some of my own scrapes from clipping and showing my calves when I was a junior. I think we as adults get some of the same scrapes in the cattle business. Now I’m not talking about the ones you may get at calving time when that cow that has never given you any trouble before all of a sudden doesn’t want you to tag her calf. | September 2009

I’m talking about the scrapes that are more mental in nature. I was recently at a Pfizer meeting, which included an economist addressing the current marketing year and what is to come; now he was really bullish 2-3 years down the road, but he was rather bearish for this fall. Unfortunately that will probably impact all of us in the seedstock industry. I hope he is wrong and the cheap corn prices currently on the board carry over into more feedlots wanting to place calves, but only time will tell. We as an association are facing a “scrape” with shrinking registrations. We are not alone as most all of the other major beef breeds are having similar results with Angus losing the largest total number of registrations down 17% this past year. If we can maintain our market share this next year, I’m also bullish on the future in the cattle business and Gelbvieh in particular. We are seeing renewed interest in crossbreeding, with some the genetic defect issues and smaller weaning weights, and I see a huge marketing opportunity opening up for the rotational continental mating systems like we offer. Each one of us needs to take this next selling season (whether a good one or a tough one) and make a concerted effort to promote our breed to the commercial cattlemen in each one of our areas. It really is up to each one of us individually to make Gelbvieh the Continental breed of choice in 2010 and beyond. Our girls learned a lot at the Jr. National and hopefully we can attend again and continue to not only learn but also make some valuable friendships. I would strongly encourage any of you in the area surrounding College Station Texas to put next year’s Jr. National, on you calendar, the Lone Star Classic will be July 4 – 9, 2010, and it will be well worth your time to attend. Editor’s Desk editor’s desk

This is my third issue as editor of the Gelbvieh World and I am very happy to report that I am enjoying working for the American Gelbvieh Association. I believe that I am beginning to settle into my new position as well as life in Denver. In the three short months I have been with the AGA I have tried to hit the ground running to bring my skills, talents, and experiences to this job and the breed. I hope that I can help this breed continue to move in the right direction, to promote the positives of the breed, and to increase the Gelbvieh breed’s impact on the beef industry.

Sale Reports In an effort to make things easier when it comes to sale reports in the Gelbvieh World, we have created a sale report form. This is an easy to use form that will hopefully make submitting sale information to the Gelbvieh World faster and more convenient for our breeders and sale managers. The purpose of the sale report form is two-fold. First, having consistency in sale reports will help us keep accurate records of the sales of Gelbvieh and Balancer animals to facilitate the top sellers list and yearly sale averages published in the Herd Reference Issue. Secondly, this sale report form will make it easier for breeders and sale managers to submit sale information to the Gelbvieh World. Simply fill in the information about the lots sold, averages, top sellers, and additional information about the sale and we’ll write up your report for the Gelbvieh World. The form is available as a Microsoft Word document and is accessible electronically on the website or by email. We can also fax or mail a copy of the form. After your sale, simply fill in the information and send the completed form back to the AGA office. We ask that you use this form when submitting your sale report to the Gelbvieh World. Also, please add the AGA to your mailing list when sending out sale catalogs. We appreciate having a copy of the sale catalog in the office to verify information for the sale report or to help with copy for your next ad.

Editorial Calendar We are excited to announce an editorial calendar for the Gelbvieh World and the Profit Picture. Each of the nine issues of the

Jennifer Scharpe

The topics for each issue are outlined below. It is the intention that these topics will help provide direction for the magazine in both editorial content and advertising. For example with editorial content, we plan to

Gelbvieh…There’s an app for that

$ The cell phone companies are constantly coming up with new applications to use with their phones – have you ever considered what apps the AGA offers? Attend the 2010 National Gelbvieh Convention and learn about the Gelbvieh

apps. You may not be able to download the Gelbvieh apps on your cell phone, however our apps are guaranteed to of value to anyone in the Gelbvieh breed. Start making plans now to attend the National Western Stock Show and the AGA Convention in Denver, Colo., January 5-12. Watch your mailboxes and future issues of the Gelbvieh World for more information about the convention and the Gelbvieh apps. You won’t want to miss this year’s Stock Show and National Gelbvieh Convention! Special thanks to Seth Arp, Arlington, Wis., for his creativity in coming up with the slogan, Gelbvieh…There’s an app for that. The idea for this year’s National Convention theme came from Seth’s poster, which placed seventh in the AGJA Junior Classic Poster Contest and used this slogan and a cell phone with Gelbvieh apps.

Paying it forward in the AGJA

here’s a spirit sparkling in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association that goes beyond the sheen of show cattle and the glitter of gold trophies. Headlines would plainly tell you that 12-year old Grant Powell of Palmyra, Mo., did exceptionally well at the AGJA Pride of the Heartland Classic—Rookie of the Year, Champion Jr. Showman, Reserve Champion Spring Balancer Heifer and more. But it’s not the whole story. Talented as he obviously is, Grant would be the very first to say that he stood on the shoulders of some very unselfish friends. “Kyle and Keaton Kendrick—they taught me just about everything I know about cattle,” Grant asserts. “They encouraged me, they pushed me to do better and they made me believe.” With a “pay it forward” attitude, twin brothers Kyle and Keaton Kendrick are closing out their junior careers by helping

those who are just getting started. Seniors at the University of Missouri, the sons of Joe and Patti Kendrick are both AGJA directors with Kyle serving as board president and Keaton as secretary. When Grant, the son of Michael and Karen Powell, decided he wanted to show cattle, the Powells went to the Kendricks for help and advice from people who had been there. “When Kyle and I got involved with junior Gelbvieh, we found a fantastic resource of people who would answer our questions and help us out,” Keaton says. “We were in (Grant’s) position once and we wanted to give something back. I guess that’s one of the biggest things we’ve gotten out of 10 years involvement with AGJA. Helping other kids be the best that they can be is a major part of what it’s all about.” The Kendrick family took the Powell family with them to Denver last January where the Powells met Grant Thayer of Jumping Cow Gelbvieh. With his help, and that of the Kendricks, Grant Powell selected the heifers that would ultimately take him to honors at nationals.

“Kyle and Keaton Kendrick—they taught me just about everything I know about cattle,” Grant asserts. “They encouraged me, they pushed me to do better and they made me believe.” Back at the Kendrick family farm near Palmyra, where the heifers were developed, Grant was a welcome guest, staying for days at a time and learning, learning, learning. “They were patient with me,” Grant says. “They didn’t just want me to lead a heifer into the ring, they wanted me to know all about showing and fitting and taking good care of cattle. They’re really good at it and I felt like it was a privilege to learn from them. And it wasn’t just Kyle and Keaton. Their brother, Kale, and Mr. and Mrs. Kendrick, too—they were all great.” Grant, who was already a successful sheep showman, obviously had the ability to learn from his mentors but it didn’t just happen without effort. “He worked hard,” Keaton explains. “It’s a pleasure to work with someone who’s that enthusiastic. And, he was a big help to us, too. We have a family farm. We have a herd of Gelbvieh cows to produce bulls and heifers for commercial cattlemen but we also have hogs and row crops. It gets pretty busy and Grant was willing to pitch in. He was already a good kid from a really good family but I hope we were able to teach him a few things.” Michael and Karen Powell’s pride in their son is only exceeded by their gratitude to the Kendrick family and the much larger family of Gelbvieh enthusiasts. “Without the Kendricks, this just wouldn’t have been possible,” Karen says. “They’ve been incredibly generous with their time and we owe them so much. This has been a great experience for us all. We loved the family atmosphere at the national show. We’re a pretty traditional farm family with old-fashioned values and this involvement with showing Gelbvieh cattle fits right in.” You’d have a tough time convincing Grant Powell that Gelbvieh isn’t the very best cattle breed going. And it would be even harder to shake his belief that the breed also has the very best junior association in the nation. “It felt like everybody wanted everybody else to do well,” Grant says. “If you’ve got a question, people will answer it. They’ll help you all they can and it seems like all the members of AGJA are friends. If you win, you’re still friends. If you lose, you’re still

friends. It all comes out good.” Although hauling home several awards felt awful good to Grant, he’s pretty philosophic for a 12-year old. Winning, he says, is great but it’s not the best part. Being involved with good people, the young

showman believes, is the real pay-off. People like Kyle and Keaton Kendrick and people like the numerous AGJA members and their families who unselfishly share and promote the Gelbvieh experience.

Gelbvieh Genetic Trends Provide Favorable Outlook By Susan Willmon, AGA Director of Breed Improvement

The AGA released the July 2009 Sire Summary. Genetic Trends show Gelbvieh moving in the right direction on milk and marbling EPDs.

The new report card of genetic trends for the Gelbvieh breed was recently released from the American Gelbvieh Association and indicates a favorable direction of desired traits. Twice yearly the AGA produces a Sire Summary of updated EPDs, Genetic Trends, and Trait Leaders. The July 2009 report provides a favorable outlook and shows the breed heading in the right direction. To be listed in the Sire Summary, bulls must meet or exceed a minimum EPD accuracy value for weaning weight of .45 to be noted as a Genetic Indicator sire and .65 to be a Progeny Tested sire. Bulls in the top 25 percentile for an EPD have an asterisk (*) designation below the accuracy for that particular EPD. A separate listing of Trait Leaders is also provided for the top bulls meeting accuracy requirements for that EPD. Also included in the sire summary are the breed averages and percentile breakdowns for each of the EPDs. One of the most important pages in the sire summary is the Genetic Trend charts that track the average Gelbvieh EPDs for the past 20 years. These charts give an indication on the direction of the breed. This valuable information helps identify areas in which the breed excels as well as traits to continue to develop.

The trends for the milk EPD shows an area in which the Gelbvieh breed has made significant progress to increase overall milk EPD values. Several years ago we looked at what was a primarily negative genetic trend in milk values since the early 2000s. For a breed that staked its reputation on 34 | September 2009

maternal strength this trend raised some red flags. An awareness campaign that was part of the 2007 National Convention capped off some educational efforts and has resulted in an uptick in the milk trend. We are pleased to announce that now the breed average for milk EPD is at desirably high level for the industry. Calving ease and birth weight are typically at the forefront of our customer’s minds when it comes to bull buying time. As mentioned in the June/July Herd Reference edition article “Developing Superior Genetics – Looking Back and Moving Forward,” we are one of the few breeds that while showing an increased genetic trend for weaning and yearling growth can continue to show a decreased genetic trend for birth weight and favorable genetic trend for calving ease. As breeders we can use the tables from the June/July issue as well as these favorable genetic trends to answer objections from buyers regarding birth weight/calving ease issues in Gelbvieh influenced genetics. The Gelbvieh breed excels at providing lower birth weights, higher calving ease, and increased weaning and yearling growth. One of the challenges in looking at genetic trends is to decide when there is enough of a good thing and to not cause unforeseen problems by overshooting a desirable target. Such is possible with the trends for growth and ribeye area. Most branded beef programs target a ribeye size from 12-15 inches and a carcass weight of 750-900 pounds. We know, based on the carcass data we have received in the past several seasons, that Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls with a ribeye EPD at breed average of .06 to .08 or higher will produce calves with this desired ribeye size. We do need to be aware that our highest ribeye sires can produce larger ribeyes, 18+ inches, and to use these bulls in the correct genetic matings. Identifying bulls with these curve-bending EPDs are ideal for cows or cowherds that have average ribeyes closer to the 9-inch range and need a shot of muscle to improve their Yield Grade profile. Similar points can be made for our carcass weight EPDs as a function of increased weaning and yearling growth trends over the past few years. Breed average carcass weight EPDs (6-8) will result in carcass weights averaging 800 pounds. Sires in the top one percent for carcass weight EPD will produce actual carcass weights averaging 900 pounds and are ideal for producers looking to make improvements in this

area. Again the caution is to make sure we do not exceed the desired market specifications and watch the upper limits of our carcass weight EPDs. Finally looking at the marbling EPD, we can again see an example of the breed moving in a favorable direction. The genetic trends for marbling show the breed heading in the right direction. However, we need to continue to focus on marbling to move the Gelbvieh breed to an industry acceptable level. The breed offers a population of sires that can produce cattle that can hit the 60-70 percent choice target on a very regular basis; these animals are at or above breed average for the marbling EPD. Sire selection in the recent years has reduced the use of some previously popular sires that were ranked in the bottom 10th percentile for marbling and tended to be the genetics causing a majority of the problems from a Quality Grade perspective. The breed is making progress in terms of marbling scores and Quality Grades. The AGA will soon be announcing results from the SmartCross research project which provides some exciting data on the value of Balancer and Gelbvieh genetics in the feedlot. The complete July 2009 Sire Summary and associated genetic trend charts can be downloaded from the AGA Website at http://www.gelbvieh.org/breed_averages.htm. Or a printed copy can be ordered for a $5 fee by contacting Teresa Wessels at the AGA office.

News news Association Announcement

American Gelbvieh Association

announces

the Southern Balancer program TM

By Susan Willmon, Director of Breed Improvement

After presentation to the AGA membership at the January 2009 convention in Denver, the AGA Board of Directors approved in April 2009 the initiation of the Southern Balancer Hybrid registry. The following are some frequently asked questions on the Southern BalancerTM program. What is a Southern Balancer TM?

A Southern Balancer is a heat tolerant hybrid that must have at least 25 percent Gelbvieh and from 6.25 percent to 50 percent of a tropically adapted breed or combination of topically adapted breeds. The sire and dam of the animal must each be a registered animal and recognized or recorded in a breed association. What are the heat tolerant breeds that can be considered for inclusion in a Southern Balancer?

The current list of tropically adapted breeds includes Beefmaster, Braford, Brahman, Brangus, Red Brangus, Senepol, and Santa Gertrudis. The member recording the Southern Balancer qualified offspring must provide the registration number/ pedigree and current EPDs of the nonAMGV parent animal. Why Southern Balancers?

Historically the tropically adapted breeds have recognized shortcomings in the areas of disposition, fertility and carcass consistency. These traits are strengths of the Gelbvieh breed and can work in a complementary fashion to produce a very marketable hybrid animal. As well, most commercial producers in the southern tier states try to keep a percentage of the heat tolerant breeds in their cowherds. While the percentage of desired heat tolerance varies on location and personal preference, most tropical and sub-tropical producers agree that some minimal level is essential for their cowherd to survive heat and pest challenges in those climates. There is also a desire to add a continental breed into breeding programs 46 | September 2009

to add pounds and carcass quality into these commercial cattle. Currently there is not another hybrid program that is targeted towards this market.

The current plan is to begin recording Southern Balancer calves with the 2010 calf crop.

into Mexico and beyond where having a “Registration” document eases the initial acceptability of these animals. Demand for Balancer bulls will also be likewise stimulated for those producers still wanting Angus or Red Angus influence. In a time when the industry is talking about reduction in the US cowherd, expanding our market for purebred Gelbvieh genetics only makes sense.

What AGA resources are going to be funneled to this program?

Should we be concerned about Brahman influence in these composites?

Presently, the educational efforts are targeted towards helping breeders interested in providing these animals understand the requirements of the program. One of the things we learned from the beginnings of the Balancer program was that it helped to have animals in the pipeline prior to generating additional demand from promotional activities. So the initial step will be working towards building a group of breeders producing these genetics in both the southern tier states and Mexico. Long term plans that can be incorporated as future budget items will include some promotion as well as possibly a Southern Balancer oriented Maternal Edge sale in the Southcentral or Southwestern portion of the US. The reality of this program is the success of our Balancer registry makes the task of kicking off this program a much less capital intensive process.

As the possibilities of this program were researched it became evident that the amount of Brahman influence desired in a breeding or feedlot animal is driven by breeding program and market value. It seems to make sense to develop a hybrid that offers flexibility to a producer based on available resources and market to add a tick – as little as 1/16th or as much as 50 percent – of Brahman blood. In that manner, the producer can make the kind of Southern Balancers that best suit their market, climate, feed resources and management constraints.

When will the AGA be ready to register a Southern Balancer calf?

If I am a current AGA member but not located in the south why should I be excited about this program?

One of the byproducts of this program will be another source of demand for high percentage Gelbvieh sires. Breeding a purebred Gelbvieh bull to a group of Brangus cows creates, in one generation, a more desirable group of feedlot steers as well as females that add the Gelbvieh maternal power to the breeders tropically adapted cowherd. Having a registry behind these animals offers additional marketability

Why introduce this program now?

The Gelbvieh breed is making great strides in promoting the value of Gelbvieh genetics in terms of profitable commercial crossbred production from the pasture to the feeder to the packer. This hybrid gives the breed added reach to a portion of the US, Central and South America that offers significant expansion potential. AGA members in Mississippi and Arizona have already been raising and promoting these animals with great success but without the advantages of a formal hybrid designation and registry program. Additional revenue from Southern Balancer registrations and southern producer memberships allows us to continue to add value added programs to the membership as a whole. For more information on this program contact the AGA at 303-465-2333 or visit www.gelbvieh.org.

Carcass Evaluation Contest

H

ow much can you tell about carcass merit by looking at a live animal? The juniors and many parents attending the Pride of the Heartland Junior Classic in Des Moines had that opportunity. Participants were given only the live weights for the cattle pictured below and were asked to individually evaluate each animal for Fat Thickness, Rib Eye Area, USDA Quality Grade and Yield Grade. Based on those estimates they were also asked to predict the top dollar value and the low dollar value animal on a grid market. The cattle were harvested and a rib section from each animal was brought back for the Classic attendees to evaluate. Register your estimates here and then turn to page 50 for results. A big thanks to Mark Goes and the South East Community College at Beatrice, Nebraska for coordinating this educational program and to Ron Russell of the University of Wisconsin for assisting with the carcass evaluation. AGA Five-Year Plan breeder education dollars were used to support this educational program. Continued on page 50

Comments Steer #1’s light live weight should be indicative of the potential problem with quality grade. Actually this steer was less than 13 months old and had been fed for a short period. With only a tenth of an inch of fat cover, this steer could easily and likely efficiently been fed for another 300 pounds. He has a very desirable rib eye. Heifer # 2 produced a premium Choice carcass with slightly above average outside fat thickness, and a very desirable rib eye especially for a heifer. The Yield Grade of 3.2 does not result in a premium or a discount on most grids. Steer # 3 This Gelbvieh cross steer hits a desired industry target of a Choice, Yield grade 2 carcass. At a carcass weight of 783 pounds he also generates the most carcass value of the four head. Steer # 4 is another example of a steer that could easily be taken to a heavier live weight with more time on feed. Similar to # 1 he had the potential to reach a desirable quality grade with more time. One note, this steer did have some bloat issues prior to the contest, that also emphasizes the long known fact that keeping cattle healthy throughout the feeding period is critical to quality grade. All-in-all there are a lot of lessons in these four head of cattle!
