Dear Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, Greetings and welcome to our 2012 Hojer Ranch Production Sale. Twenty years ago, we started with 10 head of cows and today our herd has grown to more than 300. Twenty years ago, we were an unknown and today we have Herd Sires that are recognized as “Leaders” in the breed. It has been quite a ride. Along the way though, we have never lost focus of who our customer is. Our customer is the Commercial Cattlemen. By staying focused on you, we never lost sight of what is important and it took a lot of change over the 20 years as both the cattle industry and the consumer changed what they were looking for. Even though you are our customer, we have tried to provide education to help you adjust to what the buyers of your calves will be looking for. The feedlot business is all about finding a margin. The most important dynamics of the feedlot business is feed efficiency and feed conversion. The best way to maximize both is to offer these feedlots crossbred calves. In 2004 we began offering Balancer Bulls. This was an opportunity for you to really look at your cow herd and implement the best breeding system for your herd. To produce the right calves for the market your cows are the factory and what kind of bull that you decide to use, will determine the outcome. The cow is the constant. Offering choice is all about making crossbreeding easy for you. Crossbreeding returns begin when the calf hits the ground and adds value all the way through the supply chain. Never lose sight of Heterosis! It is free!! In 2000 we begin offering production verified females. It is so important that you not only select the right bull for your herd but you also put selection pressure on your cow herd. This combination will put you in a position to maximize your productivity. As you can tell, I am very proud of our cattle, but I am even more proud of my family and the efforts that everyone has put forth to help build one of the strongest seedstock programs in the US. You have watched our kids grow up through our catalogs each year. We once joked that we had the only bull sale catalog with a sports page!! Well, I see several today. Firsts come in many different forms. 2011 was a great year for production agriculture. In the cattle business we set new highs in the market place which has set us up for new highs again in 2012. HEALTH - All bulls have received a complete vaccination program, have been wormed and poured for lice. All bulls will be bangs tested, scrotal measured, semen tested, as well as ultrasound data. DELIVERY – Bulls will be delivered for free up to 100 miles of Huron. Arrangements can be made to deliver bulls outside the 100 mile area.

“The Only Bad Cow is an OPEN Cow!” If you have expanded your herd or maintained your herd with a replacement strategy then you have or you are about to experience the “Fruits of Your Labor.” Not since the late 1940’s has the national cow herd, “Supply,” been this small and at the same time we have never experienced the overall “Demand” for beef at the level it is today. Both domestic and worldwide demand for beef continues to grow at a very rapid pace but sustainable pace. This sustainable pace is a result of the increase protein “Wants” of a world population that is improving their diet. As the world population experiences an improvement in wealth, however small, they first invest in their diet and that means “Protein Elevation.” Where beef will not be the first player in the diet, beef will eventually find its way into the diet as the populations improve their way of life. So with the above said, “I really believe that the only Bad cow right now is an open cow.” We, as cattlemen, are part of a very unique group right now that are being called upon to feed the protein needs of the world. Yes, our friends in the pork and poultry industries are part of this group as well, but Beef will always be the “Preferred” protein as long as we can stay a player with supply. Supply is now both our challenge and your opportunity. At the SD Cattlemen's Convention a year ago we had the opportunity to listen a speaker from the National Cattlemen's Association that began with the statement, “Breed EM All!” I thought that was a pretty bold statement but he was sending the message of what we are experiencing today. Getting all your cows bred is a controllable. You have control of all the dynamics of reproduction except the weather. Within the dynamics of weather you can control water and diet. You can also control the amount and quality of bull power that you have in your pastures to meet your goal of “Breed EM All!” Never in the history of beef production has our product been demanded more and valued at these price levels. My consultants are looking for the Fed Cattle prices to reach $1.37/cwt in 2012. Think about what this will make your calves worth and how expensive every open cow will be. It takes 2.7 years to bring revenue into your wallet by developing a replacement heifer. Make sure you keep the current cows producing during this transition. Averages

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight. EPD GV BA Calving Ease Direct (CE): An EPD that is expressed as a ratio, with a higher 1.1 -0.4 BW ratio representing better (easier) calving ease. This value represents the direct influence a sire has on calving ease. Only first0calf heifer data is included. 108 109 CE Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight 41 38 WW (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of 75 80 YW growth from birth to weaning. Gestation Length (GL): This EPD is expressed in days and measures the days under or over normal gestation length a sire’s daughters can be expected to calve. Calving Ease Daughters (CED): An EPD expressed as a ratio for a sire’s daughters’ calving ease with a higher ratio being a more favorable calving ease. This value represents the calving ease that a sire transmits to his daughters. Only first-calf daughters are considered in calculations for this EPD. Weight Per Day of Age (WDA): Calculated by Current Weight Days of Age Adjusted Weaning Weight (ADJ. WW): Weight, in pounds, the calf would be at 205 days of age and adjusts for age of dam and sex of calf. Uses the following formula: (Actual weaning weight — actual birth weight) X 205 + Actual Birth Weight + Dam Adj. Actual Age in Days Adjusted Yearling Weight (ADJ.
