Dear Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, Greetings from our family to yours. Hojer Ranch is a family run operation and we hope that you enjoy the work and effort that goes into the offering that we bring to you each year. It is very important to us that you are able to use our genetics to meet your profitability expectations. This offering will continue the tradition of high performance and docile disposition balanced with calving ease and a maternal strength so you can utilize your purchase for both a terminal cross or a maternal cross to meets your needs. During these “Opportunity Times” in the cattle business, I am advising everyone to put upwards pressure on your performance because the market needs pounds and the market is paying for pounds. At the same time we want to give the market the carcass quality that they can depend on to maximize their profitability to the consumer. You can have all this with the genetics within this catalog. Also, don’t forget about building your cow herd during these “Opportunity Times” in the cattle business. TERMS & CONDITIONS TERMS - This sale is conducted under the standard terms and conditions as adopted by the American Gelbvieh Assn. Each animal becomes the buyer’s risk as soon as sold. Arrangements may be made to keep and deliver bulls.

LIABILITY - All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. HEALTH - All bulls and heifers have received a complete vaccination program, have been wormed and poured for lice. All bulls will be scrotal measured, semen tested, as well as ultrasound tested for carcass data. DELIVERY – Free delivery of all Bulls and Heifers within 100 miles. Arrangements can be made to deliver bulls to central points outside the above 100 mile area and costs will be shared.

Volatility “Friend Or Foe” Wow!! As of this writing, fat cattle are being sold at $1.48/cwt on a live weight, or $2.39 on the dressed weight. I looked back over my writings of the past several years and many times I have mentioned that great times are right around the corner. Well, these times have arrived! We are in a supply driven market and the only thing that will change this picture is increasing supplies or decreasing demand. Unfortunately, these high prices will most likely impact both supply and demand, and high prices always fix high prices. Just because we know today that we cannot sustain these high price levels, we are and will stay in the best of times for the next several years. It is what each of us do during these “best of times”, that will ultimately determine our sustainability and profitability. Sustaining and profiting will be more challenging after 2016. I said more challenging, I didn’t say impossible. So, what are the factors we can control? 1. Be very financially responsible and build a healthy financial position. 2. Run your operation to capacity to fully realize the efficiency of your operation. 3. Become familiar and learn to use all the risk management tools that are available to put yourself in the best position possible to mitigate risk. 4. Focus on the production side of your operation to add pounds to your operation that will be recognized in the market place as a value added product. You will get paid more. As you look at your herd and how you market your calves, this is the time, during the good times, to make the right investments in bulls and females. This will ultimately support the direction that you want your program to go. Even though it will cost more to make that investment in your operation during good times, you also have more resources to make those adjustments. The volatility of the market place will take prices higher than they should go. Down the road, I anticipate that the market place will take the market lower than it should go. It is very important for everyone, during volatile times, that something becomes a constant. You want the market place to recognize you and your cattle as “the constant that they can depend on!” Once recognized for the value that you have added to your cattle, you will receive top dollars for your calves because the market can depend on you and your calves to deliver an expected result. All cattle are worth a lot today. The key is to make sure that you position the quality, feedlot conversion and efficiency, and overall carcass merit of your cattle to be of the kind that self differentiate at all times. Gelbvieh EPDs Averages Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight. Calving Ease Direct (CE): An EPD that is expressed as a ratio, with a higher EPD GV BA ratio representing better (easier) calving ease. This value represents the direct CE 9 11 influence a sire has on calving ease. Only first calf heifer data is included. BW 1.3 0.2 Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of WW 66 64 growth from birth to weaning. YW 91 97 Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling Milk 29 27 weight (adjusted to standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. TMAT 62 58 Milk: The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds CED 7 7 of weaning weight. Total Maternal (TMAT): A value that combines growth and milk information and a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughter. This value does not have an accompanying accuracy value. Calving Ease Daughters (CED): An EPD expressed as a ratio for a sire’s daughters’ calving ease with a higher ratio being a more favorable calving ease. This value represents the calving ease that a sire transmits to his daughters. Only first-calf daughters are considered in calculations for this EPD. Weight Per Day of Age (WDA): Calculated by Current Weight Days of Age Adjusted Weaning Weight (ADJ. WW): Weight, in pounds, the calf would be at 205 days of age and adjusts for age of dam and sex of calf. Uses the following formula: (Actual weaning weight — actual birth weight) X 205 + Actual Birth Weight + Dam Adj. Actual Age in Days Adjusted Yearling Weight (ADJ. YW): Weight, in pounds, the animal would be at 365 days of age.
