A Factory Built on Tenderness, Growth & Milk!
At Rogers Valley Farm, we look at our cows as our factory. Today, for a factory to succeed, it needs to be efficient with the latest technology. We approach our cow selection the same way. She needs to raise a calf every year on the forage provided. To improve our herd, we place an emphasis on timely data collection. We use EPDs, ultrasound data plus DNA technology to measure the economically important traits of tenderness, feed efficiency and reproduction. Our dams and herdsires are selected for their tenderness genetics as well as growth and reproduction. With our genetics, you can add tenderness without losing performance. For information on our bull and young female offerings or to purchase semen from our tenderness sires, call Ronald Rogers at 660-375-7266. Semen also available at Cattlemen’s Connection.

POWERFUL GENETICS
PRESIDENT’S VIEW
Advancing the Breed The success of the AGA, the Gelbvieh breed and the strategic plan is dependent on members. Members can take up the tools to advance this breed. By Mark Goes IF YOU ARE reading this, then you know that you have survived the 12-21-12 end of the world. You likely have survived the fiscal cliff, regardless of what government decisions have been made. You survived the drought of 2012. You are readying plans to handle the next weather challenge. As well as making plans for the immediate and distant futures of the cattle industry. In this business we have chosen, there is never a shortage of prediction, forecasting, worry, doubt and scheming. During my last six years on the American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors and especially over the last 18 months, the AGA has read and interpreted industry signals. We have strived to adapt, improvise and overcome the challenges to re-affirm the place in the industry that Gelbvieh cattle well deserve. The U.S. cattle industry is a living, breathing and dynamic entity that demands astute and pre-emptive diligence to survive. Over recent history, the AGA has changed leadership, leadership design, genetic evaluation, marketing strategies, record keeping avenues, investment, and the list goes on and on. But the things that have always been in common are the inarguable advantages of Gelbvieh genetics. Behind those cattle are a very passionate, sincere and honest group of breeders that stand ready for any challenge the industry presents. Stewarded by the Board and staff, the membership’s business of the AGA is staged to prevail. There is a long list of effort and programs developed through the Impacting the Beef Business strategic plan that are currently being implemented. Research and member education will provide a pathway for keeping up. Promotional endeavors will spread the message of the advantages of Gelbvieh. Membership must take up

the tools made available and help to advance this breed to the top of the Continental cattle list. I hope membership keeps in mind that we need to celebrate our strengths while we quietly fix our weaknesses. We cannot afford to kill ourselves from within. When you witness your co-breeder having success, celebrate those successes, learn from them and use them to advance the breed. The only gain from destroying another’s success is mediocrity. If the only way you can advance yourself is by hindering someone else, then your advancement is pretty cheap.
In any effort, you must choose to lead, follow or get out of the way. At the 2013 Annual Convention, you will choose to do one of the three.
In any effort, you must choose to lead, follow or get out of the way. At the 2013 Annual Convention, you will choose to do one of the three. The AGA has chosen to lead with regard to development of cattle that provide efficient and effective genetics to the cattle industry so as to create profitability and satisfaction throughout the many segments of beef production. Your involvement in the AGA and especially your input at the Annual Convention is the fuel that drives the progress of the breed. It has been a privilege to serve you these last six years on the Board. It has been a rewarding and enriching experience. I am confident that the future directors and staff are ready to proceed with the right answers to the challenges we will face. I am sure they will remember as Doris Kearns Goodwin said, “Good leadership requires you to surround yourself with people of diverse perspectives who can disagree with you without fear of retaliation.” FFF

EXECUTIVE’S VIEW
Optimizing Your Resources The AGA Impacting the Beef Business strategic plan provides direction and helps allocate resources. As a result the promotion and research budgets were increased by 38% and 400%, respectively. By Jim Gibb “I DON’T KNOW where we are headed but we’re sure making good time.” This was the caption of a cartoon of two cowboys riding down a hill, about to come to the edge of a ravine. Dr. Bob Taylor, long-time professor of Beef Production Systems at Colorado State University used this illustration with his students to emphasize the need for setting goals and creating a “roadmap” for your cattle operation. In the same way, managing the hard-earned resources voluntarily provided to the American Gelbvieh Association by its members is one of the key responsibilities of the AGA Board of Directors. Applying these resources to assure they are optimally used to advance Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics is critical. Continuity of priorities can often be problematic due to the revolving nature of a board of directors. This is true of any membership-driven organization. A multiyear plan assures more consistent direction. The Impacting the Beef Business strategic plan (IBB plan) was developed largely to assist the current and future AGA Boards of Directors in resource allocation. The plan’s three key focus points are breed improvement, breed promotion and member education. Again, these priorities surfaced after considering results of the member survey, the AGA Board and staff SWOT analysis, plus AGA and beef industry trends. To illustrate how the IBB plan affected the 2013 AGA budget, the Board increased the breed promotion budget by 38 percent and research budget by 400 percent, 8 | JANUARY 2013
compared to 2012. In addition, as the mail carriers deliver this issue of Gelbvieh World, Ms. Kari Otteman will be joining the AGA staff to assist with breed improvement and member education. One might ask the obvious question, why the big increase in the research budget? First, the Board determined that research had been significantly underfunded for a number of years, and second, research is needed for both breed improvement and promotion.
The Board determined that research had been significantly underfunded for a number of years, and second, research is needed for both breed improvement and promotion.
For decades, beef breed associations were able to promote their breeds using information provided by the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC). However, over the past decade or two, MARC has shifted its emphasis from breed comparison to genomic research. This is not necessarily bad; it just means that breed associations must be more responsible for their own research. I remember participating in a beef industry meeting several years ago when this issue of dollars for research and promotion was discussed at length. Walt Rowden, the NCBA research committee chairman, used NASCAR as an effective illustration, stating that all the fancy paint and logos on a racecar mean nothing if the engine, drivetrain and suspension aren’t the best. Research investment benefits both breed improvement and promotion. Members of the AGA can be assured that the IBB plan has already had an impact on enhancing the use of their resources and will continue to guide the AGA, Gelbvieh and Balancer for years to come. We know where we’re headed. FFF

Canadian Gelbvieh Association 40th Anniversary Celebration Successful The 40th Anniversary of Gelbvieh cattle in Canada was celebrated at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. The sale was the highest among all the breeds at Agribition, averaging $7,993. "Throughout the week activities marking the forty year history of Gelbvieh cattle brought together past and present breeders and friends to share good times, great memories, and enthusiasm for the Gelbvieh breed," remarks Wendy Belcher, Secretary/Manager of the Canadian Gelbvieh Association. The banquet celebration was highlighted with the unveiling of an original Gelbvieh print commissioned by the Canadian Gelbvieh Association by renowned artist, Bernie Brown of Okotoks, Alberta. Also a commissioned 40th Anniversary gold and silver belt buckle made by Troy Fischer of Mayerthorpe, Alberta, was presented to the membership. The 2012 inductee into the Canadian Gelbvieh Association's Hall of Honor was presented to Glynn Waterton, GSW Gelbvieh of Owen Sound, Ontario.

GENOMICS One Step Closer to Gelbvieh Genomic-Enhanced EPDs To complete the Genomic Pioneers project and release genomic-enhanced EPDs, AGA and GeneSeek® are offering a sale on the Gelbvieh 50K. For $75 members can have any animal tested on the 50K panel and have their genetics represented in the training population for GE EPDs. THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association has been on the road towards the development of genomic-enhanced EPDs. The road started with the Genomic Pioneers project initiated in the fall of 2011. This project has since yielded more 600 DNA samples and greater than $64,000 in income for the American Gelbvieh Foundation – all of which was generously donated by AGA members. Add to that about 250 AI bulls that had been typed on the 50K chip from previous research and additional samples

submitted this fall by members and the AGA has just more than 900 animals with 50K genotypes. These 900 animals are all part of the training population. This training population is used to develop the Gelbvieh/Balancer® specific panel for creating molecular breeding values (MBVs) on other Gelbvieh and Balancer animals. The MBVs are then incorporated into the AGA’s national cattle evaluation to calculate genomic-enhanced EPDs. The plan, and one of the goals of the Impacting the Beef Business long-range strategic plan, is to provide genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) by the summer of 2013.
Reaching 1,200 plus animals with 50K genotypes in the training population increases the predictive power and validity of GE EPDs. The AGA has been conducting this research with the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC). The NBCEC is an independent unbiased research collaboration of four land grant universities: Colorado State University, Cornell University, University of Georgia and Iowa State University. The AGA has been working closely with Dr. Dorian Garrick from Iowa State University and his team to complete this research. Dr. Garrick reported his initial findings to the AGA Board of Directors in April. His findings were very favorable. Using the 50K genotypes and the existing AGA EPDs, it was determined that MBVs could be calculated and had enough predictive power to be included in the AGAs national cattle evaluation, and ultimately the development of GE EPDs. At that time, Dr. Garrick did recommend that the AGA continue collecting 50K genotypes to include in the training population. The more animals with 50K genotypes in the training panel, the higher the percentage of the genetic variance that can be predicted through MBVs. Essentially, reaching 1,200 plus animals with 50K genotypes in the training population increases the predictive power and validity of GE EPDs. Members are encouraged to continue testing animals

on the Gelbvieh 50K. DNA samples on any animal not currently in the training population will be accepted. Target animals for the 50K are: herd sires used in the 2011 and 2012 breeding seasons; currently used AI sires that have not yet been genotyped; donor dams; matriarch cows with daughters and granddaughters in current seedstock herds. A current list of tested animals can be found at www.gelbvieh.org by clicking on the Genomic Pioneers link under on the Genetics and Research page under the Education Center tab. However, the AGA’s goal is to get an additional 300 animals genotyped on the 50K panel to be included in this training population so all samples will be accepted.

MANAGEMENT Tick Tock: Properly Time Vaccinations for Reproductive Success Timing is everything when it comes to successful reproductive programs, and that includes timing of vaccinations to help prevent reproductive diseases. Following the timing guidelines on product labels is critically important to helping guarantee safety and efficacy.
programs and following labeled directions are key to vaccine efficacy and safety, especially when using modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines.”
“VACCINATING AGAINST REPRODUCTIVE diseases helps keep cows pregnant, helping protect your reproductive program and bottom line,” says Victor Cortese, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ABVP, Director, Veterinary Specialties Group, Pfizer Animal Health. “However, working with your veterinarian to set up vaccination
“MLV vaccines closely mimic a natural infection, since the animal is actually seeing the modified pathogen in a more natural form,” Dr. Cortese says. “As a result, MLV vaccines can help create an effective, balanced and what should be an entire immune response.”
Understand MLV Vaccines Different types of vaccines, such as an MLV or killed vaccine, stimulate the immune system in different ways. MLV vaccines contain live organisms that undergo limited replication within the body, while killed vaccines use dead organisms.

(IBR) virus vaccines have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of MLV vaccines, such as BOVISHIELD GOLD® FP*, in helping protect pregnant heifers, cows and their fetuses. Cattle vaccinated with BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP within the preceding 12 to 17 months and then vaccinated during each trimester of pregnancy had abortion rates similar to the control group, which was vaccinated with a placebo.1-3
Risk-Free Protection for Your Herd With a Fetal Protection (FP) Guarantee, Pfizer Animal Health ensures your herd will be free of IBR abortions if the cows and heifers were vaccinated according to label directions at least 30 days prebreeding with any of Pfizer Animal Health’s
family of FP vaccines.** In addition, Pfizer Animal Health guarantees 100 percent of calves will be born free of bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) persistent infection (PI) provided that all cows and heifers have been vaccinated according to label direction at least 30 days prebreeding. FFF
Take Steps to Help Protect Your Herd “MLV vaccines are safe to use, but there are risks involved when using them in pregnant cattle,” Dr. Cortese says. “Using these vaccines against their label indications and without supervision from a veterinarian are the biggest risks of all.” Dr. Cortese also recommends additional tips to using MLV vaccines successfully. • Regularly consult your veterinarian: Your veterinarian is a valuable resource regarding the science and proper use of vaccines. Include your veterinarian as part of your reproductive health team. • Write vaccination programs: Having written programs, which include timing guidelines, for your vaccinations will provide the guidelines for you and anyone administering vaccines on your operation. Reviewing them regularly with your employees and your veterinarian also will help keep them up to date. • Keep accurate records: Vaccine administrations should be included in your reproductive records. Record the date the first vaccination is given, and review the records to determine when a booster shot is needed.

BREED PROMOTION MINUTE
With the End in Mind Now is the time to position your breeding program to take advantage of future market trends. Evaluate your genetics, plan your direction, and then seek out the genetics that will help you. By Frank Padilla WITH THE END of one year begins the planning for the next. For producers in the cattle business it includes evaluating what trends they are seeing in their individual operations. It also includes a look at what the trends are in the entire industry in which they operate. The recent reduction of the U.S. cow herd is at the fore front of most those in the beef industry. When and where will rebuilding take place and how can producers best position themselves to take advantage of the rebuilding opportunities? Extension Livestock Specialists are telling us the beef cow herd reduction is occurring at a greater rate in regions where crop production is greater. Opportunities for beef cow expansion may be greater in drier regions of the country. Positioning your program for the future requires evaluating the current direction of your breeding program. As a seedstock breeder, you provide the genetics that filter down throughout the rest of the industry, ultimately to the feeder, packer and then to the consumer. Thinking of your genetics as on an island, separate from the rest of the industry will not be profitable in the beef market we are currently in. Whether you sell one bull a year or several hundred, live in the East or in the West, all seedstock breeders need to be providing the genetics that meet beef industry demands. Taking a look at the genetics trends of your breeding program is a good way to evaluate your direction. The American Gelbvieh Association can provide members with EPD genetic trends lines representing the genetic selection history of your program. A good way to assess your breeding program direction is to compare your 20 | JANUARY 2013
EPD genetic trend against the average trend lines for Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals. Contact the AGA office to request a copy of your EPD genetic trends. With the upcoming sale season, breeders and cowcalf producers will look to add genetics that will move their programs forward and become more relevant to the needs of their customer. It’s a competitive market place in which we compete for market share. Buyers have many choices. Plan your course of action before purchasing new genetics. Decide what traits are most important for your program. If you haven’t yet developed your own strategic plan, now is the time to do so. Strategic planning can have four stages. 1) Vision: What is the desired end state or the image of where you want to be? 2) See: What is today’s situation? What is the gap from the ideal to where you are now? 3) Think: What specific actions must be taken to close the gap from where we are to where we want to be? 4) Plan: What is needed in regard to resources (genetics) to get me where I want to be? If you don’t know where you are going there’s a good possibility that you may not get there. Provide information and data to help your customers make their buying decisions. Think of providing data such as ultrasound scores, DNA profiles, adjusted weights, frame scores and scrotal circumferences as customer service. This information helps identify the outliers of your sale offering. And after the sale, this complete data helps you as a seedstock breeder evaluate sire groups or female lines that are consistently producing the type of genetics to move your program in your desired directions. Take advantage of the upcoming sale season to move your program forward. Seek out genetics that will complement your program and that of the customer. Once you find them own them. FFF

states purchased the 330 head of registered and commercial females that brought to an end the more than 30 year history of AB Farms in Lathrop, Mo. This Carolina Fortune daughter sold with a New Deign 878 bull calf at side.
The next high was Lot 60 and sold to Van Winkle Farms, Neosho, Mo., for $3,600. EPDs 2.0 – Age-Adjusted Carcass EPDs The AGA EPDs released with the January 2013 evaluation will be adjusted to an age-endpoint, allowing across-breed comparisons. Bull IMF ultrasound scores will also be included in the marbling EPD calculation. By Susan Willmon AS AMERICAN GELBVIEH Association membership may be aware, the January 2013 AGA Sire Summary and national cattle evaluation process to calculate EPDs will be conducted with a new service provider, the American Simmental Association. The primary benefits of this move include higher accuracy weaning weight EPDs; increased EPD accuracy for Balancer® and percentage Gelbvieh animals; standardization of the carcass EPDs with other breeds; higher accuracy marbling EPDs; and eventually, higher accuracy values for all traits through the inclusion of genomic data. During the development of the AGA long-range strategic plan, the need to compare carcass EPDs on Gelbvieh and Balancer animals with other breeds become increasingly evident. Currently, AGA carcass EPDs – carcass weight, ribeye area and marbling – are adjusted to a fat endpoint rather than an ageadjusted endpoint. The shift to the constant fat-adjusted endpoint was made in 2007. The reason for this shift was a constant fatadjusted endpoint more closely 34 | JANUARY 2013

However, the days to finish (DtF) EPD will become a backfat (FT) EPD. The other benefit of switching EPD service providers is access to new models for EPD calculations. The model the American Simmental Association uses to create carcass EPDs accurately accounts for the

Collecting carcass ultrasound data on bulls and females continues to be a valuable tool for seedstock breeders. On heifers, it helps the seedstock breeder make replacement heifer decisions. Breeders may not specifically cull females or cut bulls based solely on IMF or REA data. Ultrasound carcass data must be collected between 320 and
480 days of age. Collecting data on bulls at or close to an average contemporary group age of 12 months is ideal. Heifers tend to show more variation if they are slightly older, 13-14 months of age 7. AGA recommends that all animals are weighed and scanned for a given contemporary group. 8. Animals should be in good flesh at the time of scanning. Bulls should be scanned prior to being taken off of a gain test. Heifers should be scanned following a growing or developing program. Scanning at these times allows animals to express maximum genetic differences for marbling and fat thickness. FFF

COMMUNICATION NOTE Production Schedule Gelbvieh World The Profit Picture
A New Look for the New Year Gelbvieh World and the AGA are committed to continuing to provide quality editorial. We know AGA members use Gelbvieh World as the number one source of information, as proven by a membership survey conducted at last year’s Annual Convention. In the previous pages of this issue, please find a listing of the articles published during 2012. This listing is your reference to go back and find articles on specific topics that may be of interest to you and your program.
Increasing the reading experience of the magazine was the primary goal of the Gelbvieh World redesign. Let us know what you think of this improved look. By Jennifer Scharpe WE ARE PROUD to unveil the new look of Gelbvieh World. The redesign of the magazine is a long-time coming and is the result of four months of thought, creativity, review and critique. While change isn’t always easy, and is especially difficult when dealing with the complexities of magazine production, we felt it was time to bring our readers a much improved look to Gelbvieh World. The goal of the redesign was to welcome our readers into the magazine and make a more pleasurable reading experience. We have strived to achieve a clean, fresh, simple yet professional look. We hope readers notice the increased font size of the editorial text. This was something that was given special consideration. Increasing the font size will make the articles easier to read for people of all ages. The challenge we have proudly accepted is to write more with less – decrease the word count of articles while still informing our readers of the many important topics facing Gelbvieh breeders, the American Gelbvieh Association and the beef industry. 48 | JANUARY 2013
Feedback from readers is welcome and important to the continued improvement of the magazine. Please feel free to drop me an email at jennifers@gelbvieh. org and let me know what you think of the redesign. As well, if there are certain topics or articles that you would like to read in future issue, please send me those suggestions. On a final note, Gelbvieh World staff, including Frank, Lynn, William, Brian and myself, would like to thank all of our advertisers. We appreciate all of our contract advertisers, our yearly production sale advertisers, the many new advertisers we have acquired this past year, our breeder block advertisers and our allied industry advertisers. Thank you for your continued business. FFF

JUNIOR VOICE Top Ten New Year Resolutions for AGJA Members Items such as membership recruitment, using your voice and becoming a mentor make the AGJA’s top ten list of resolutions for the New Year. By Dana Stewart THE BEGINNING OF the New Year is a fresh start. This is a perfect time for American Gelbvieh Junior Association members to set some goals pertaining to AGJA and Gelbvieh for the upcoming year. To help you get started I have compiled an AGJA “top ten” list. 10. Become familiar with the AGA’s “Impacting the Beef Business” long range strategic plan. This plan will set the course of Gelbvieh for years to come. As you transition to members of the AGA this plan will have a lasting effect. Becoming familiar with this plan and incorporating it into your AGJA experience will provide you with a boost in AGJA, AGA and the beef industry. 9. Make plans to attend an AGJA-sponsored show. AGJA has three opportunities to attend an AGJA show: the Eastern Regional, the Western Regional, and the AGJA Junior Classic. Even if you attend without exhibiting cattle, it’s a great way to meet fellow Gelbvieh breeders. 8. Recruit at least one AGJA member. AGJA can grow and do more with your help. Recruiting new members enriches our organization. 7. Transfer any of the animals you sell. Anytime you sell an animal take the extra step to transfer the ownership. It’s free and provides your customer with important information and free materials from the AGA.
6. Explore A.I. It’s no secret that using artificial insemination is one of the fastest ways to advance your herd. Contacting your veterinarian is a great place to start if you need assistance finding an A.I. technician. 5. Submit more data. By data I mean weights, measurements, dates and scores. This information is essential for providing the most accurate EPDs for your herd and all Gelbvieh animals. 4. Pay attention to issues in the beef industry. Subscribe to an enewsletter service from any of the major beef publications or Extension outlets. Stay educated about what’s going on around you because it will impact you eventually. 3. Use your voice. Be an advocate for agriculture. Farmers and ranchers have a great responsibility to feed the world. But there are those who threaten our livelihood. It’s up to each of us to tell our own story. 2. Be a mentor. Take a younger 4-H, FFA or Junior Gelbvieh member under your wing and teach them something that someone else has taught you along the way. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship and you’ll enjoy your new friendship. 1. Enjoy 2013. It’s my experience that AGJA members are some of the most active, involved and passionate youth across the nation. In the craziness of life, be sure to enjoy the moments of your youth that you only get to experience once. Best wishes for a safe and happy 2013. Contact any of our AGA staff throughout the year if you have questions or concerns. We love hearing from our members and are here to help you. FFF
