Staying Focused on the Road Map Happy New Year! 365 days seem to go by a lot faster than they use to. By reflecting on the past year, we gain perspective on where we’ve been and where we are going. By Rob Arnold AS I WRITE this article, we have completed four AGA committee web-meetings, with another four to go. Without a doubt, every committee chair has commented on the success of these web-meetings. I have attended three of the four and believe they have been a success for several reasons: 1) Greater attendance than during the meetings at Annual Convention; 2) Input from many breeders who do not go to Denver; 3) More discussion and more diverse discussion overall. I understand that some may be opposed to this format, but, it has been a great improvement so far in member participation – and that is the goal! After one of the web-meetings, a breeder of Gelbvieh cattle for about 8-9 years and who participated in three of the four web-meetings shared with me, “I don’t attend all the meetings but I do try to stay informed with the latest news and what’s happening in the breed. Sometimes I find it to be very difficult and I know others do as well. I know that to be competitive with the other breeds we need to 6 | JANUARY 2014
keep improving. However, I do not see a particular trait we are trying to improve. What I do see is the Association trying to give us more and better tools to help us make better breeding decisions.” With the exception of the marbling trait, I agree with this member’s summary. Our cattle have improved and continue to improve on marbling because that has been a high priority for many of us. And, whether he knew it or not, this member identified the focus of our Impacting the Beef BusinessTM long-range strategic plan the past 12 months. As it relates to breed improvement, the strategic plan identifies five high priority goals that we (the Board of Directors, industry stakeholders, and every member who completed a survey back in 2012) identified as being important long-term: •
Develop reliable tools to monitor traits for maternal efficiency;
•
Improve marbling;
•
Implement genomic-enhanced EPDs;
•
Develop feed efficiency EPDs;
•
Improve tenderness
So, allow me to reiterate what I said a year ago when we developed the strategic plan: It acts as a road map for our breeders as well as providing a mechanism to keep our breed in step with the industry. With this plan, we can all focus on breeding better cattle that are industry relevant. There is nothing more industry relevant than birth, growth, maternal, and carcass. Are we superior in all of these? Maybe, maybe not. Do we offer the industry a solution to all of these? Absolutely. Can we improve? Absolutely. We operate in a very fluid environment. Our priorities and goals need to change with it. Let’s remember what we are good at and what the industry needs. Please reflect on our strategic plan and identify new goals or existing strategies that need to be addressed. Your Board of Directors is your avenue to direct change and the strategic plan is the road map to keep us on track and to get us there. Again, I wish everyone success in 2014 and a very blessed & Happy New Year! FFF

It Starts (and Ends) with You It starts with data collection on the farm or ranch and ends with the use of EPDs and indexes by your customers. By Jim Gibb THE THEME OF the 2014 AGA Annual Convention is “Impacting the Beef Business: It Starts with Membership.” While this applies to all aspects of the American Gelbvieh Association, it is most relevant in the area of breed improvement. Over the years, breed association folks like myself have stressed the importance of collecting data and submitting it to their breed association. I’ll readily admit that too often the message was somewhat self-serving in an attempt to expand the association’s database. It really is all about you and your customers.
Adequate marbling is a must CAB, the world’s largest branded beef program and based on beef that grades in the top two-thirds of Choice, recently announced another record year in sales. Moreover, even with Zilmax being pulled from the market, the Choice-Select spread is $14 per cwt. (at this writing), demonstrating that the demand for high quality beef remains strong and will continue for the foreseeable future. To enhance our relevance in the beef industry, Gelbvieh breeders must continue to focus on marbling.

American Gelbvieh Association Annual Report Available
As of January 1, 2014, members may begin submitting their 2014 herd assessments. Completing the assessment online is the quickest and easiest way to submit your work. However, you can still request a paper copy from the AGA office.
During the 2014 American Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention, members were given a copy of the 2012-2013 AGA annual report. This report emphasizes the highlights of the Association during the last fiscal year. Members may request a copy of the annual report by contacting the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or info@ gelbvieh.org.
Plan Ahead for Bull Sale DNA Testing Bull sale season is here. If you are planning on having genomics, coat color, or genetic conditions results for your catalog, submit those samples early. Members should plan on submitting samples at least 30 days prior to any catalog deadlines. Also, consider sending large quantities of samples via USPS, UPS or FedEx in a manner that provides a tracking number. Shipping samples in a padded envelope or small box minimizes damage or loss of samples during mailing. The DNA forms can be found on the Gelbvieh website under the Education Center. If you need help understanding the DNA order process, please contact the AGA office.

Sweetheart Gelbvieh Classic Names Champion The Canadian Man-Sask Gelbvieh Association hosted the 14th Annual Sweetheart Gelbvieh Classic at the 2013 Show at Canadian Western Agribition. A total of 33 memberships were sold with 12 females competing for top honors. Members chose their top four females prior to the female show at Agribition. Upon completion of the show, the top four animals were announced and were re-judged the following day prior to the sale. The winning entry became the lead-off animal in the Agribition Gelbvieh sale. This year’s Sweetheart was exhibited by Fladeland Livestock, Gladmar, SK, with FLAD Fladeland Ritzy 2Z. She sold to Thackeray Gelbvieh Farm for $4,200. Fladeland Livestock received the jackpot of $7,102. McCoy Cattle Co. was the lucky member who won the sale proceeds of $4,158. The three runner-up females were exhibited by Davidson Gelbvieh, Fladeland Livestock and Bluff Island Stock Farm. Congratulations to Fladeland Livestock and the Man-Sask Gelbvieh Association for another successful Sweetheart Classic.
2014 International Year Code With the start of the New Year, comes a new international year code. The 2014 international code is “B”. All 2014-born calves registered with the American Gelbvieh Association must use the letter “B” in the tattoo. The 2013 code is “A” and the code for 2012-born calves is “Z”.
On the Road at the Range Beef Cow Symposium AGA staff attended the recent Range Beef Cow Symposium held in Rapid City, S.D. Gelbvieh Departures Teresa Wessels, former long-time employee of the American Gelbvieh Association lost her battle with cancer on November 7, 2013, at her home near Atlanta, Ga. Teresa served AGA members for 18 years. Recognized as the voice of Teresa Wessels AGA for many years, Teresa was the welcoming voice fielding phone calls to the AGA office and provided the highest level of customer service throughout her time with AGA. Teresa retired in September 2011. After leaving AGA, she and her husband Gerald moved to Georgia to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Dr. Michael MacNeil is an internationally recognized expert in the field of breeding and genetics research. His personal research has focused on practical avenues through which sophisticated animal breeding technologies can Michael MacNeil impact selection decisions by beef producers. Dr. MacNeil has developed widely used economic indexes that contribute to the NCE of most major breeds in the USA.
Dr. Jonathon Beever is a professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, and an internationally renowned molecular geneticist. He is at the forefront in research and Jonathon Beever development of DNA testing for genetic conditions, which he does by working cooperatively with beef breed associations, veterinarians, breeders and other scientists. He has developed or co-developed a dozen DNA tests used in the beef industry throughout the world.
Dr. MacNeil has been working closely with American Gelbvieh Association to develop tools to measure maternal efficiency, leading to the creation of the AGA’s heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy and mature cow weight EPDs, for the ultimate goal of a maternal index. Dr. MacNeil will discuss the development of economic breeding objectives with special reference to the AGA maternal objective. Virgil Scott, a certified fundraising executive, focuses on helping nonprofit organizations and leaders become successful through the creation and development of fundraising programs tailored to their Virgil Scott specific needs. In the past two years Virgil helped nonprofits in Kansas and North Dakota raise $3 million. His clients range from county health care foundations to national advocacy organizations. This is an opportunity to learn how you can support the priorities of the American Gelbvieh Foundation by using various giving strategies that have tax-advantages for donors. Dr. Beever will be sharing some of his experiences and help us see into the future of genetic testing as both a scientist and fellow cattleman. Dr. Dorian Garrick has been integrally involved in the development and implementation of national animal evaluation programs, performance recording databases and breeding schemes. His recent work has focused on Dorian Garrick theoretical and applied aspects of using genomic information to predict performance. Dorian is a director of the U.S. National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium that focuses on the development and application of methods that use genomic information to predict genetic merit in beef cattle. Dr. Garrick and his research team at Iowa State University have worked closely with the American Gelbvieh Association in the development of the profile used for generating genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs). Dr. Garrick will address the value and application of GE EPDs.

NUTRITION Body Condition Scoring: Four Things to Know about “F. I. V. E.” During times of physiological stress, such as late gestation and peak lactation, maintaining the body condition of a cow is critical to ensure weight and condition are not lost. By Courtney Verzosa WHEN YOU’RE OUT “checking the cows” it can be difficult to remember how evaluating and assigning body condition scores (BCS) to your cattle can be useful. And the last thing you want to be doing is standing in a pasture trying to remember important information about the benefits that come from utilizing the BCS system. To simplify the process and organize key points, I like to use the acronym “F. I. V. E.” that covers four basic ideas. Armed with this tool and the BCS descriptions (see Table 1.), you can strive for optimum performance and body condition, from your cow herd.
“F”: Fall The most opportunistic time to achieve the desired BCS is from when the cow is dry, until about the first month into her third trimester. For a spring calving herd, this is mostly during the fall season. During this time of the year, dry, pregnant cows have minimal nutritional requirements, making it easier to provide adequate nutrition while allowing supplementation to be economical. This is because the high demands of peak lactation 16 | JANUARY 2014
have yet to occur and nutrients are still being used to increase muscle mass and body condition. The further along into gestation, the harder it becomes to increase body condition of a cow due to the fetus developing 75 percent of its final BCS 1

weight during the third trimester. Soon, the majority of nutrients the cow takes in will be diverted to supply her calf with everything it needs to grow and establish immunity.
Description Emaciated – Cow is extremely thin with no evidence of fat and little muscling. Bone structure is sharp and easily visible. Poor – Little evidence of fat deposition but some muscling in the hindquarters. The spinous processes feel sharp and it is easy to see the spaces between them. Thin – Beginning of fat cover over the loin, back, and foreribs. Backbone still highly visible. Processes of the spine can be identified individually by touch and spaces between the processes are less pronounced. Lower conception rates, calf survival, and poor herd health. th th Borderline – Foreribs not noticeable, but 12 and 13 ribs are visible. Transverse spinous processes can be identified only by palpation and feel rounded. Full but straightness of the muscling in the hindquarters. th Optimum – Generally overall good appearance. 12 and th 13 ribs are not noticeable. Transverse spinous processes can only be felt with firm pressure and feel rounded. Spaces between the processes are not visible and areas on each side of the tail head are fairly well filled, but not mounded. High Moderate – Ribs fully covered, not visually noticeable. Hindquarters are plump and full. Firm pressure now required to feel transverse processes. Good – Ends of spinous processes can be felt only with very firm pressure. Spaces between processes can barely be distinguished. Abundant fat cover on either side of tail head. Typically have trouble breeding back, due to large amounts of internal fat surrounding reproductive organs. Fat – Animal has a smooth, blocky appearance. Bone structure disappearing from sight. Fat cover think and spongy, with rounds or pones developing at the tail head. Extremely Obese – Bone structure not seen or easily felt. Tail head buried in fat. Mobility may be impaired by excess amount of fat.

“I”: Ideal Condition Ideally, we want the BCS of a cow to be around 5. The beef cattle body condition scoring system (shown in Table 1.) ranges from 1 to 9, with 1 representing extremely emaciated and 9 being extremely obese. Maintaining cows at the appropriate body condition will improve production by increasing conception rates and tightening calving intervals. Having an animal in ideal body condition leads to fewer days needed to return to estrus after calving. The effects of body condition score at calving on breeding back are illustrated in Table 2.
“V”: Value Added Cows that achieve the ideal body condition, add value to your herd through increased calf health, survival, and overall performance. When cows are in the ideal body condition, they are able to provide adequate nutrients to meet the calf ’s requirements. When compared to calves born from cows with less than ideal body condition, calves born from BCS 5 cows have shown increases in weaning weight, due to tightening the calving interval and increased uniformity.

“E”: Efficient and Economical Management Body condition scoring can be a great tool to accurately reflect the nutritional status of a cow, without the stress or inconvenience of having to weigh the cattle. Choosing to use the BCS system to separate a cow herd by body condition can allow producers to provide higher quality feed or forage to young and thin cows. This practice allows producers to be economical when developing a nutrition program. Separating cow herds based on BCS can also prove effective when striving to efficiently utilize feed and forage supply, which could be limited this time of year. One thing producers can do to maintain the body condition of their cow herd is to provide a year-round supplementation program. Quality programs that incorporate organic and inorganic trace minerals and vitamins, along with the correct levels of protein and energy, in highly palatable formulations, will result in consistent and continuous intake, which will improve forage utilization, and overall herd performance.

It will allow you to adjust your feeding and supplementation program, as needed, to improve cow productivity and calf health, ultimately leading to increased profitability. Just remember, “F. I. V. Do You Have What It Takes? There is opportunity in the cattle business now like we haven’t seen in years. People are looking to upgrade genetics, to shore up their marketing programs, to brand themselves, to garner market share. Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur and to position yourself to take advantage of these opportunities? By Frank Padilla GELBVIEH IS GAINING market share. The demand for cattle that will perform at all levels of production is great. Commercial producers are seeking out problem free cattle that will suit their environments with stayability and reproductive performance. They are rethinking straight breeding and looking for ways to add both quality and efficiency to their herds, while lowering the cost of production by using planned crossbreeding systems through breed complementarity. Gelbvieh and Balancer® give them these things and more. Good producers are good business people. They understand return on investment. Prices are good….but expenses are high as well. It’s what’s left after the bills are paid that counts. You can’t be average and become an All-State athlete. You can’t be average and be a Nobel Prize winner. Never before have we seen so much price difference within the same weight class of cattle selling on today’s market. There is a reason for it. Cattle that have proven 22 | JANUARY 2014
performance, and top drawer management and vaccination programs are proven to demand more worth from buyers. Buyers compete for them; they want to own them and will pay a premium. Would anyone really expect average performance cattle with no documentation or management program to consistently sell for more than those that do? Buyers want as little risk as possible. We should admire entrepreneurs. We study those who are successful entrepreneurs and quickly dispel the persistent myth that entrepreneurial success is all about innovative thinking and breakthrough ideas. We find that entrepreneurial success usually comes through great execution, simply by doing a better job of “blocking and tackling.” The same can be said about successful seedstock and commercial cattle producers. They must possess entrepreneurial skills. In looking at yourself as an entrepreneurial in the cattle
business, what does it take to succeed? You must be passionate about what you are trying to achieve. That means that you are willing to sacrifice a large amount of your waking hours to the idea that will make your operation more successful. That passion will ignite the same intensity in others who join you as you build your team to succeed in this business. And with passion, both your team and your customers are more likely to truly believe in what you are trying to do. Great entrepreneurs focus intensely on an opportunity where others see nothing. This focus and intensity will help eliminate wasted effort and distractions. Most companies suffer from doing too many things at the same time rather than doing too few things very well. Stay focused on the mission. Success only comes from hard work. There is no such thing as overnight success. It takes years of hard work and sweat. People with luck will tell you there’s no easy way to achieve success…and that comes to those who work hard. Successful entrepreneurs always give 100 percent of their efforts to everything they do. If you know you are giving your best effort, you’ll never have any reason for regrets. Stay focused on the things you can control and let the results be what they will be. many variables in the real world that you simply cannot put into a spreadsheet. Spreadsheets spit out results from your inexact assumptions and give you a false sense of security. In most cases, your heart and gut are still your best guide. We read that the human brain works as a binary computer and can analyze only the exact information-based zeros and ones (or black and white). Our heart is more like a chemical computer that uses fuzzy logic to analyze information that can’t be easily defined in zeros and ones. We’ve all had experiences in business where our heart told us something was wrong while our brain was still trying to use logic to figure it all out. Sometimes a faint voice based on instinct resonates more strongly than overpowering logic. Be flexible but consistent. Successful entrepreneurs have to be agile to perform. You have to continuously learn and adapt as new information becomes available. At the same time, you have to remain persistent to the cause and mission of your enterprise. That’s where that faint voice becomes so important, especially when it is giving you early warning signals that things are going off track. Successful entrepreneurs find the balance between
listening to that voice and staying persistent in driving for success--because sometimes success is waiting right across from the transitional bump that’s disguised as failure. I can’t imagine anyone ever achieving long term success without having honesty and integrity. These two qualities need to be at the core of everything we do. Everybody has a conscience but some choose to stop listening to it. Success doesn’t come from breakthrough innovation but rather flawless execution. A great strategy alone won’t win a game or a battle. You have to adapt to ground realities. You’re going to learn more useful information from taking action rather than hypothesizing. Herd Assessment Basics The annual herd assessments (HAS) are the life-line of the American Gelbvieh Association. The $25 per cow fee that AGA members pay fund more than 40 programs and services for members and their commercial customers. THE SUCCESS OF the American Gelbvieh Association is dependent on an active and involved membership. The AGA’s more than 40 programs and services are critical in assisting to promote and market Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle on all fronts. The AGA thanks all members for completing their herd assessment. Your continued commitment to the development and enhancement of the Association and the breed is greatly appreciated. Active Membership American Gelbvieh Association membership requires payment of dues applicable to membership type and annual herd assessments (HAS). Active members receive a free subscription to Gelbvieh World magazine, one free registration to the AGA annual convention, and have access to AGA’s programs and services.
Total Herd Reporting The annual HAS process is a critical component of the total herd reporting (THR) system the AGA adopted in 2000. The purpose of THR is to establish a more complete database, thus enabling the AGA to make more accurate genetic predictions through EPDs and indexes for Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders.

THR requires that all cows have a calf registered or a reproductive status code (RSC) reported annually.
Annual Herd Assessments due March 15 Herd assessments are the way members update their cow herd inventory as part of the THR. Members are asked to update their cow herd inventory in the beginning of each calendar year. All breeding-aged females (over 13 months of age) on a member’s inventory are then assessed a $25 fee. Members can begin submitting herd assessments in January, with all assessments due March 15.
Free Transfers and Registrations Payment of the HAS fee includes one registration credit, tied to the cow, to be able to register a calf out of that cow for the current year. Transfers are free to all active members.
Complete HAS Online The easiest way to complete your HAS is through the AGA’s Member Online Registry system. Through the online registry, members can register 2013 calves, dispose of open females, pay HAS on AMGV and non-AMGV females, post your 2014 inventory, and dispose of any females less than 13 months of age and any bulls.

VIEW OF THE NUMBERS Pay Attention to Disposal Codes Disposal codes for cows, calves and bulls have been updated to reflect member needs and breed improvement tools. Be sure to take a look at the updated codes when completing herd assessments. By Susan Willmon and AGA Staff RECENT BREED IMPROVEMENT research towards the development of maternal EPDs and indexes has emphasized the importance of disposal codes. A disposal code is used to remove a cow, calf or bull from a member’s herd inventory. There are several routine times during the year when members will update their herd
inventories using disposal codes. The most immediate of these is during the annual herd assessment process where breeding-aged females, which are no longer active in the heard, are removed from a member’s current herd inventory. Table 1 contains an updated list of disposal codes that should be applied to breeding females. These

disposal codes have been updated to help member’s better reflect why a female left the herd. Paying attention to which female disposal codes are used will lead to better, more reliable breed improvement tools, such as EPDs for heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, stayability, as well as a maternal index. Determining which females were exposed and then removed from the herd because of failure to conceive versus other reasons becomes very critical for fertility-related EPDs. Members should identify these females with the Disposal Code 9: Cow culled, open - exposed, failed to conceive. This will help identify

genetics with inferior fertility. Realizing there are instances where females are removed for reasons that are no fault of the cows themselves, a couple of codes have been added. Disposal Code 26: Cow moved to commercial herd and Disposal Code 27: Cow culled - herd reduction, should be used when appropriate. As breeders make decisions to keep or cull females based on genetic condition testing status, disposal codes have been added to identify these females. Disposal Code 28: Cow culled - genetic conditions carrier should be used when an animal has been DNA tested as a carrier of a genetic condition. The Calf Disposal Code 23: Calf culled or died – genetic condition, affected, should be used when a calf is determined to be affected by a genetic condition. As well, differentiating females that might be removed for diseases such as mastitis (Disposal Code 25: Cow culled or died - disease) versus a more generic reason (Disposal Code 24: Cow culled or died - other) may seem trivial at this time but will become important down the road. As more research is completed on the genetics of disease resistance having this data may provide AGA members with an advantage in this area in the future. Using a Calf Disposal Code 3: Calf died - preweaning (disease/health) will also become relevant. Complete listings of codes that should be used for calves can be found in Table 2. Additionally, disposal codes specific to breeding bulls have been added (see Table 3). Information specific to bulls culled because of failing a breeding soundness exam (Bull Disposal Code 44: Breeding bull - failed
BSE) has the potential to add more insight into the overall fertility puzzle. Other codes have been added relating to bull temperament (Disposal Code 41: Breeding bull - temperament) and structure (Disposal Code 40: Breeding bull bad feet, legs). All of these codes will be
available for use in the Member Online Registry system as members update herd inventories during the herd assessment process and as new calves are added. Please feel free to call and speak with a member of the AGA registration staff if there is any question on which is the best code to be used. FFF

That passion we have for agriculture motivates us to succeed. By Jennifer Scharpe RECENTLY, I WAS honored to be named the 2013 Minnesota CattleWomen of the Year. I am truly grateful and humbled to be associated with the many outstanding CattleWomen who have previously received this award. My involvement with the Minnesota CattleWomen sparked an early passion in me for a career in agriculture communications, not only in working for the American Gelbvieh Association, but also being an advocate for agriculture. My involvement with the Minnesota CattleWomen began when I was in high school and participated in the Beef Ambassador and Beef Queen programs sponsored by the CattleWomen. It was during those years of representing Minnesota’s beef farmers and ranchers that I realized I wanted a career in communications in the beef industry. Those experiences helped shape who I am today and helped develop the passion and the skills I use in my job today. A BEAUTIFUL SEPTEMBER day was the backdrop for a very solid sale for the breeders of Seedstock Plus and the customers that participated. All the females sold at a brisk pace with the sale averages up significantly over last year. Cattle sold to 39 buyers in 11 states. Prior to the sale start a complimentary beef brisket meal, catered by the Rib Crib restaurant was enjoyed by all in attendance. Sale highlights include: Lot 1: Pick of pregnant recips from Bachman Cattle Farms sold to John Carrel, Mont., for $3,000. John picked the HFGC Vickie Vail 173Y34 X JDPD Astro 407S heifer mating. Lot 2: Pick of the entire Bar T Bar calf crop sold for $7,700 to Mulroy Farms, Kan. Having purchased the BTBR Nevada 1170Y bull in a past sale Mulroy Farms knew the opportunity presented in this offering. Lot 3: Pick of bred heifers
from Sandy Knoll Farms sold to CJSD Gelbvieh, Ohio for $3,500. The Diehl family has purchased this pick before and the results warranted to go again. Lot 4A was the BC Matrix X Cocoa Sue ET open spring heifer with the option to purchase the additional 11 full ET sisters. This female sold for $2,300 to Two Step Ranch, Iowa with Pat McCabe taking all of the full sisters. Lot 43: This top selling fall pair was consigned by Pederson Gelbvieh and sold for $3,250 to KG Gelbvieh, Texas. Guy and Kristen Lambert of KG Gelbvieh purchased a total of four fall pairs. Lot 92: The top selling open heifer come from Stuecken Bros. and sold for $5,600 to Bachman Cattle Farms. This red purebred Gelbvieh has excellent EPDs across the board and is also a 10 on tenderness on her IgenityÂŽ profile. FFF

SEEDSTOCK PLUS HOSTED another successful sale with their annual Fall Bull Sale. There were 149 registered buyers, of which 84 bought, with bulls selling into 12 states. All the bulls sold at a rapid pace to new and repeat customers that bid aggressively on this quality offering. The sale averages increased over $500 per head over last year’s sale. Sale Highlights Include: Lot 129: A homozygous black purebred Gelbvieh bull from Brandywine Farms, sold to Walnut Ridge Gelbvieh, Mo., at $7,750. Brandywine Farms retained 25 percent semen interest on this calving ease prospect that was also the top IMF scanning Gelbvieh bull.
Lot 14: A black Balancer from Okatoma River Ranch sold to Jerald Rumfelt, Mo., for $6,900. This super phenotype bull was the result an ET mating and posted a 129 gain ratio. Lot 3: A homozygous black, homozygous polled 88 percent Angus bull offered by JGP Gelbvieh and Burbank Cattle Co. Nowack Cattle Co. of Missouri was the winning bidder at $6,300. Lot 3 had an excellent EPD profile, with carcass value of 123.57, 114 gain ratio, and high IMF scan. Lot 61: Another bull from Brandywine Farms, this homozygous black Balancer bull sold to Tom Strubberg, Mo., for $6,250. Excellent EPDs, a high IMF scan, and eye appeal attracted many to this bull. Lot 104: This homozygous black, homozygous polled, purebred Gelbvieh bull from Diamond Mill Iron Gelbvieh sold to Ann Gregory of Kansas for $6,000. He combines excellent calving ease and milk in a package with length, depth and thickness. FFF

JUNIOR VOICE Herd Assessments - What AGJA Members Need to Know Annual herd assessments are available in January and due by March 15. For AGJA members, your dues and herd assessments must be paid to participate in AGJA activities. By Dana Stewart
What is a “herd assessment”? The American Gelbvieh Association herd assessment is part of total herd reporting required for all AGA and American Gelbvieh Junior Association members. Total herd reporting means that every registered, active female with the AGA that is over 13 months of age must have a calf status reported annually. Did the cow have a calf? Did she shift calving seasons? Did you sell the cow or did she die? Even if the calf died upon arrival or is sold as a feeder calf that information must be submitted online or through a registration applications. The herd assessment reports any animals that you will dispose of, meaning they’ve been sold, died or no longer in the herd. This information is important and is used to develop data tools such as the stayability EPD. Cows can remain on the assessment for a fee of $25.00. Or if the cow is no longer in your herd, you can remove her from the assessment without any fees. However, if you wish to add that cow to your assessment in a following year the cost is $25.00 for every year she was taken off.
Why does it matter to me? Herd assessments, released in January, must be completed each year by March 15 to keep an active membership status. The herd assessment together with your annual dues must both be paid and current to be an active member. This is especially important for AGJA members since both must be paid to participate in AGJA shows and activities.
What do I get in return for my herd assessment? After you complete the annual herd assessment, your membership receives a registration credit for each cow that was not removed from the assessment. This means you do not pay any additional fees when registering calves from your assessed cows. Also, you’ll get free ownership transfers for any animal you sell and transfer to the new buyer.
How do I complete my herd assessment? The easiest way to complete your herd assessment is through the AGA’s Member Online Registry system. In January, log on to your online AGA account and your assessment will be waiting. Once you’re finished, you can enter payment method and your assessment will be taken care of until the following year. There are several help guides posted on the AGA website and support from the AGA registration department is always a phone call away. FFF

A GREAT CROWD gathered on November 18 at New Market Hall in Louisville, Ky., for the 2013 NAILE Showcase Gelbvieh & Balancer® Sale. The sale was part of an event-packed week for Gelbvieh breeders. The sale offered outstanding quality with many taking class and division champion honors at the prestigious NAILE Gelbvieh and Balancer Show.
Lot 8 was a fancy, red Decade daughter consigned by Circle S Gelbvieh was the choice of Wesley Dobbins at $3,900. She was also an entry in the 2013 heifer futurity where she placed first runner-up.
Lot 7 was a flush opportunity in CIRS PMFG Eye Candy 2101Z offered by Pleasant Meadows Farms. Larry Clark took advantage to add her genetics to his outstanding program.
Green Hills Gelbvieh offered a pick from their highly competitive show string. Their string consisted of seven head impressive bulls and heifers. Lot 13A, GHGF 31A, was the choice at $4,750. FFF
Butler's Black Oak, Lot 10, was purchased by Mike Moore and Larry Clark. He is an exciting young bull sired by Butler's Red Oak out of Butler's CareFree 534U.

he 2013 Eastern National Gelbvieh and Balancer速 Show was held at the North American International Livestock Exposition on Tuesday, November 19, in Louisville, Ky. A total of 83 animals were exhibited by breeders from across the country. Judge Jack Ward, Kansas City, Mo., evaluated the 42 Gelbvieh females, 17 Gelbvieh bulls, 16 Balancer females and 8 Balancer bulls. The premier breeder and premier exhibitor awards both went to Emily Griffiths. Cody Moore of Fountain Run, Ky., was named the premier herdsman. The 2013 NAILE Junior Gelbvieh Show was held on
