A Living Legacy... TJB Vanessa 914U TJB Vanessa 914U is the last living legend from our illustrious “U” model donors. She has certainly left us with a legacy of daughters to carry on. True to our breeding philosophy, she is a great granddaughter of the original Vickie Vail. Her females by Sandhills 0065X have entered the donor program and will be highlighted in future ads. Her Rebel Yell heifer, pictured below, sold this past spring to Hilltop Gelbvieh for $16,000. This is a great cow family to tie into in future sales! Contact us with questions.

CELEBRATION FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE

T

he American Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration kicked off December 8, 2021, in downtown Oklahoma City. Gelbvieh and Balancer® producers and stakeholders from across the country convened to discuss the future of the breed and celebrate the breed improvement and camaraderie the association has become known for.

Shorty’s Caboy Hattery for the inside scoop on premier cowboy hat craftsmanship, Boxcar Woody’s to learn about the entrepreneurial reclamation that goes into salvaging boxcar floors to create heirloom furniture, and a private tour through the iconic Oklahoma National Stockyards – a sale that frequently sees 15,000plus head of cattle sold over the course of two days each week.

The event opened Wednesday afternoon with keynote speaker Clay Mathis, director of the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management, Kingsville, Texas. Mathis shared with attendees the importance of looking to the future, not only for the betterment of the breed, but for the advancement and security of the beef industry, itself. Mathis talked about the importance of identifying hard trends and building a plan of action around the “knowns” of the industry.

“We are the last terminal market,” Kelli Payne, president of the stockyards, told attendees. “A lot of the time, what happens on Monday morning with our sale can change how the Chicago Board of Trade opens on cattle futures.”

“There will be an increase in the global population that will drive an increase in food need; we will continue to see urban sprawl and land values increase; consumers will continue to be interested to a greater degree in food production practices; regulations will increase; business will become more complex; the speed of technology development will accelerate…we know these things and we have to think about these things when we build our operations to be resilient,” he said. To wrap day one, members gathered for the kick-off reception to celebrate the 50th anniversary milestone of the association. Members past and present visited and reminisced both in-person and via Zoom. Thursday marked day two where attendees experienced Oklahoma City through a unique tour that kicked-off with the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association’s generous coffee and dougnut reception. Following, groups toured

12 | GELBVIEH WORLD

Jam-packed with education and information, Thursday also offered attendees the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, Kim Stackhouse-Lawson, Steve Wooten and Dustin Aherin. The trio provided insight on sustainability efforts within the industry and what we, as we producers, can do to contribute. Each panelist presented individually and the event concluded with a panel that answered audience questions. A convention favorite, the bull pen session, was also back in 2021 and gave attendees the opportunity to socialize over hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Members wrapped the week on Friday with a morning of foot and leg scoring and DNA education, followed by workshops and board elections. The convention drew to a close with an awards banquet to honor recipients of the prestigious Breeder of the Year, Commercial Producer of the Year, and Hall of Fame awards. A memorable time was had and all departed with the excitement of the 52nd Annual Convention to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, December 7-9, 2022. F

he American Gelbvieh Association recognized a dedicated member that has been an influential figure in the Gelbvieh breed during the 2021 AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration. JJ Boehler of Orleans, Nebraska, was officially inducted into the AGA Hall of Fame at the convention awards banquet on December 10, 2021. An AGA member since 1986, Boehler is a member of the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska (GAIN), having served on the board of directors and several committees. He has helped organize several state tours and was instrumental in developing the first Balancer Bull Futurity. He also helped establish the first paid state breeder representative position and has been a sale committee member for the GAIN Fall Female Festival. In addition to his contributions to the AGA, Boehler can boast several

accomplishments as a breeder. These include the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Champion in 2001, 2004 and 2006; People’s Choice Bull Futurity Champion in 2021; Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Supreme bull recipient two years in a row and many state and national champion awards.

“JJ has one of the most unique cow herds in the breed, winning national titles across the country and raising influential livestock,” Lori Brown of Dwight, Kansas, says. “Titles mean little to the humble breeder though. One drive through the pastures with him, you can see the spark and pride in his eye.”

“We have found that JJ has been a leader in utilizing new genetics of the Gelbvieh breed,” Robert Anderson of Jamestown, Kansas, says. “We have purchased several herd bulls from him over the past years. Those genetics have produced top quality replacement females, breeding bulls and high-quality steers for both the registered and commercial herds.”

These accomplishments are significant, but what sets Boehler apart is his integrity and passion. A man of not many words, his drive to grow the Gelbvieh breed with friends, family and future breeders, as well as his work behind the scenes, speaks volumes.

Beyond the recognition Boehler has received for the quality of cattle he raises, he is widely recognized for his passion for the industry and the breed.

“He is honest, hardworking and unselfish,” Jeff Swanson of Oxford, Nebraska, says. “But most of all, he is a good friend and an excellent choice for the American Gelbvieh Association’s Hall of Fame.” F

2021 BREEDER OF THE YEAR

T

Bar S Cattle Company is the recipient of this year’s Breeder of the Year award. The honor was presented to the Vehige family at the AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, in Oklahoma City. T Bar S is located in Billings, Missouri, and is owned and operated by Tom and his wife, Stacy, along with their children, Justin, Kyle and Grace. As long-time members, the Vehige family has been very active in the AGA and heavily involved in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA), with all three children having served on the AGJA board of directors. The Vehiges are also members of the Heart of America Gelbvieh Association. The honor came as a surprise to Tom who shared that the family’s passion for

Gelbvieh cattle has a foundation in the operation’s first breeding stock. “I knew that I wouldn’t ever be able to have the number of cattle I wanted, so I set out to find the best,” Vehige says. “I wanted to be a part of something bigger than me. I wanted to raise what I thought were the best cattle in the cow-calf industry and that led me to the maternal qualities of the Gelbvieh breed.” Vehige says that he had always been attracted to the continental side of the cattle business because of their outstanding performance and was impressed by the disposition and fertility of Gelbvieh. What he really fell in love with, however, was the calf crop. “At the time, I wasn’t sure if it was the base of my cowherd or the Gelbvieh bull I had purchased, so I went back

and bought some purebred females,” he says. “I quickly found out that it was the Gelbvieh I was attracted to. That was the foundation that I built the herd from.” Today, the operation that got its start in 1993 is operated as a family endeavor in every sense of the word. “We were going to downsize, my wife and I. We didn’t ever want to force this on our children, but they have all wanted to be a part of what we are doing, and, really, that is the greatest blessing,” Vehige says. “We all have our strengths and we play into them. Every decision is decided on collectively. It’s just how we operate.” Congratulations to T Bar S Cattle Company on being honored as the 2021 Breeder of the Year. F

2021 COMMERCIAL PRODUCER OF THE YEAR

P

owles Ranch Partnership is the recipient of the 2021 AGA Commercial Producer of the Year award. Powles Ranch Partnership was presented with this honor during the awards banquet of the 2021 AGA National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration on December 10, 2021, in Oklahoma City. Powles Ranch Partnership is a commercial cow-calf operation located in the Nebraska Sandhills near Bingham, Nebraska. Today, the ranch primarily utilizes Balancer® genetics to produce their own home-raised replacement females and markettopping steer calves. The Powles family has a long and rich history in the Gelbvieh breed. Don Powles first used Gelbvieh genetics in the fall of 1972 in partnership with Phil VanDervoort. The Powles ranch was running purebred Hereford cows and a crossbred commercial herd,

but Phil convinced Don to use some Gelbvieh semen to breed his fall calving Hereford cows. This led to Powles Gelbvieh Ranch becoming AGA member #224. Don envisioned black Gelbviehs and worked to make his vision a reality, breeding the first homozygous black, homozygous polled Gelbvieh bull, POW Black Imprint 386Z, in 1992. The family sold Gelbvieh bulls for 24 years. Don loved selling bulls and talking to customers, especially when delivering bulls. Don was a true Gelbvieh advocate and always made time to talk cattle. He is credited with giving several kids Gelbvieh heifers to start their cowherds. In addition to the performance genetics the operation has become known for, a legacy of service is also credited to the Powles family name. Don’s wife, Gretchen, served as the American Gelbvieh Gals president. Their daughter,

Jana, and son, Bryon, both served on the American Gelbvieh Junior Association board of directors, and Jana served as the American Gelbvieh Ambassador. All were involved in GAIN, the Gelbvieh Association in Nebraska. Today, the Powles Ranch Partnership includes Jana (Powles) Jensen, her husband, JC, their children Jada and Cameron, and Bryon and Audrey Powles. The ranching operation is a family affair. Bryon takes care of the north half of the ranch and JC the south half. Jana does all the financials and bookkeeping, while Audrey keeps cow records. The AGA Commercial Producer of the Year Award honors individuals who use Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in progressive commercial cattle operations and are proactive in their promotion of the breed. VI RTUOUS CY CLE O F BEEF P RODU C T I ON Clay Mathis, Ph.D., presents keynote speech at AGA annual convention. FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE

T

he virtuous cycle of beef production was the focus of this year’s keynote speaker, Clay Mathis, Ph.D., director of the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management. Mathis opened the annual convention with a presentation that offered attendees a new perspective on the incorporation of consumer demand on long-term ranch management strategy, and the hard trends producers can use to build a resilient operation. “You can think of these hard trends as ideas or things that we know exist,” Mathis said. “We may not know the magnitude, but we know that the trend exists.” Mathis noted a host of “knowns” in the beef industry today, citing the increasing complexity of doing business and heightened regulations. At the top of his list, however, was sustainability and the ability of consumer perception to influence other “knowns” within the production system. “The three pillars of sustainability are social, environmental and economic. We’ll start with the economic pillar, because that is where we are most comfortable discussing sustainability.

If we are more profitable, we have an incentive to produce beef, and if we have a motivation to produce more beef, then we are more likely to improve the management of cattle and natural resources,” he said, noting that cattle and natural resource management don’t have to be neglected to make a positive change in management. Mathis posed the question: If we improve cattle management and natural resources management, aren’t we then also improving the efficiency of production? And if we improve the efficiency of production, we increase beef production and, in-turn, revenue, because if we are increasing the efficiency of beef production, we are decreasing the unit cost of production. “If everything else is constant, we should increase profitability—this is that continuous improvement that you may have heard about,” he said. “It’s a virtuous cycle. We do things better, we make more money, we help the environment and we increase consumer demand.” Mathis urged attendees to consider the carbon footprint of this beef production model.

“Think about the greenhouse gas emissions. Think about the social acceptability of beef production increasing, and the biggest driver of social acceptability, animal welfare,” he said. “When we improve management, we improve all of those things, and they all, especially social acceptability, afford us a license to operate. It means we have the trust of the consumers.” This message desperately needs to be communicated through producers, industry outreach and organizations like the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, Mathis said. It is everyone’s mission to communicate sustainability across the beef value chain. Communicating the sustainability benefits of beef production is a win-win for every component of the value chain, including the consumer. “Social perception of what we do has to be front and center,” Mathis said. “The annual checkoff budget is about $80 million; Beyond Meat has an annual marketing budget of $200 million. If we are going to change perceptions about our industry, we all have to have a voice, because we can’t out-spend the people who want to put us out of business.” F

REGISTRY TIPS ‘N TRICKS

HOW-TO: HERD ASSESSMENTS by Jake W. Renner, M.S.

N

ew year, new records. As you will read in this month’s Data Bulletin, Total Herd Reporting (THR) is an important part of being a member of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA). Aside from health and sale records, birth weights and transfer data, the tool is also essential to keeping your herd inventory up to date within the AGA Online Registry Service. For females, the assessment and record keeping process begins each year by administering Herd Assessments on females 13 months of age or older. This annual $25 per head fee acts as a one-rate, one-stop shop that provides the opportunity for members to input records on the female’s calf including disposal and transfers. Herd assessments are now open on the AGA Online Registry Service and they are due on March 15, 2022.

ACCESSING YOUR HERD ASSESSMENTS

You’ll want to log into your account and select “Herd Mgmt” on the left side of your screen. From the drop-down menu provided select “Inventory.” Once in the inventory screen, you will have access to all the females currently listed as active under your ownership, along with any others that may be associated with your account if you are listed as the Cooperator ID for another herd. You’ll notice a variety of tabs listed horizontally at the top of the screen. It’s important to recognize the difference between these tabs so you know which females are listed under each. Tabs with a year followed by “Assessed” signify females that have already been assessed for the year listed. For example, if the tab reads “2019 - Assessed,” that tab contains a list of females that have been assessed for the year 2019. (YEAR) ASSESSED = FEMALES ASSESSED FOR THAT YEAR The tab reading “Assessment-Age” designates females that need to be assessed for the current year. If a female is missing a herd assessment for any reason from a previous year, you must contact the AGA office to place the proper records on the female(s). ASSESSMENT AGE = FEMALES WAITING TO BE ASSESSED FOR THE CURRENT YEAR (2022).

COMPLETING HERD ASSESSMENTS AND CULLING FEMALES

As you view the list of females under the “Assessment-Age” tab, you will notice a

24 | GELBVIEH WORLD

variety of options available to update the records of all currently active females including placing the assessment, disposing cull cows, and recording exposure data for the 2022 calf crop. To dispose of a female, click on the small gray icon to the right of the female that looks like a trash can. Using the drop-down menu provided, select the disposal code/reason that best describes why this specific female is no longer in your herd. Once a selection has been made, you’ll want to be sure to select the green check mark to lock in your disposal code. It is important to remember that disposal of a cow due to transfer into your commercial herd in an attempt to avoid registering a calf for that year is discouraged. If the female moves from the registered inventory to the commercial herd in one year and is asked to be placed back into the active inventory to register a calf in a following year, she will be required to pay for the years she was not active per the AGA rules in keeping consistent records on all animals as part of practicing total herd reporting. To keep our data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. To place the herd assessment on females that are forecasted as dams of 2022 calves to be registered, simply click the 2022 button found to the left of each female’s details under the “Assess For” column. If you do not have any females to dispose of and wish to complete the 2022 herd assessments for all females listed under the “Assessment-Age” tab, click the “Complete Yearly HAS ProcessAssess all for 2022” button found in the top right corner of the screen. You will be asked if you are sure you want to assess all females. By selecting to

continue and move forward you are agreeing to pay the associated fee of $25 (if processed before March 15) for each female listed on the “Assessment-Age” tab at that time. If there are boxes under the “Heifer Exposed?” tab, simply clarify whether that particular female was exposed via AI (Artificial Insemination), PE (Pasture Exposed) or NO (Not Exposed). If the female was not exposed to a bull but will remain in the herd, be sure to select the “NO” box. You’ll notice once the AI and/or PE boxes are checked the female will receive a 2022 button to the left of her details for selection to place the 2022 herd assessment. You are able to select both AI and PE if the female was exposed using both methods.

RECORDING EXPOSURE DATA Recording exposure data on a female is optional but can be beneficial for multiple reasons including the convenience of recording the sire’s

registration number and dates associated with sire exposure at the same time as the herd assessment, which eliminates the need to enter the sire’s registration number when you are ready to register the 2022 calves. If the female was exposed naturally to a sire, you’ll select the PE button and enter the bull’s registration number along with the date the bull was put in with those females as well as the date he was removed. Be sure to select the green check mark to the right of those details after entering. If you accidentally

select PE and need to return to the main screen to dispose, or select AI, simply click the red “X” button to the right. If the female was AI’d, you’ll want to select the AI button to the right of the female’s details and enter the sire’s registration number along with the date the female was AI’d.

If you need to request a printed herd assessment form, please contact the office at your earliest convenience to allow time for those forms to be printed, mailed, completed and returned before the March 15, 2022, deadline to avoid late fees. After this deadline, herd assessments may still be completed, however, late fees will be applied according to the schedule below.

DATA BULLETIN

TO DISPOSE OR NOT TO DISPOSE:

A GUIDELINE FOR USING DISPOSAL CODES by Lindsay Upperman, Ph.D.

W

ith herd assessments upon us, it is important to remember that an integral part of Total Herd Reporting (THR) includes correct and accurate disposal codes. And because disposal codes typically aren’t a high priority on the the to-do list, AGA wants to provide this reminder: submitting yearly disposal code and no calf reported reasons for the cows within your herd inventory is critical for accurate and current THR. THR generates a record each year for a cow and her calf, regardless of registration status. This practice provides various benefits through the ability to calculate EPDs for traits such as heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy and stayability. Also, THR allows for complete contemporary groups to be utilized for traits such as weaning weight, and even to account for sequential culling. For instance, if a calf is weaned at a lighter weight, the animal may be culled before a yearling weight can be recorded. The above benefits result in more accurate EPDs, which provide the selection tools for utilization in both seedstock and commercial operations. Maintaining an up-to-date animal inventory where every female is accounted for annually is the basis for THR. A herd assessment for the 2022 year means that the producer will be reporting performance over the next 12 months or during the 2022 calendar year. Additionally, a producer will also be recording any disposals from the previous year (2021). During the next 12 months, producers will then record live calves to the assessed females; if no calf is born, it is important to report why a calf was not recorded (calf loss, death of dam, etc.). Reports that state why a calf was not recorded for the year or why

a female was not assessed are the most frequent missing reports.

COW DISPOSAL/NO CALF REPORTING - 2021

The first way to dispose of a cow is through the General Profile Information page on the online registry. When viewing the animals in your herd, there is an Options section or set of gray buttons to choose from. Clicking the “Dispose” button will put the cow into the Status/Disposal Queue; once selected, the button will read “Queued.” Once in the queue, click the drop-down menu to choose the appropriate disposal code. There is a scroll bar, so make sure to keep scrolling if you don’t see the appropriate disposal reason for the given animal.

The second way to dispose of a cow (if already assessed) is through the Herd Mgmt > Inventory > Assessed - 2021 or Assessement-Age page. On this page, within the same row as the cow being discussed, there is a gray trash can symbol (outlined below in red). Clicking on the gray trash can will produce a drop-down menu where you can then proceed to choose the correct disposal reason for the female. Again, make sure to keep scrolling if you can’t find the appropriate code.

There is also a way to report a reason code for no calf being reported. As stated above, go to Herd Mgmt > Inventory > Assessed – 2021. Then, instead of clicking the gray trash can symbol, click the yellow scroll symbol (outlined above in blue). Again, this will produce a drop-down menu, where you

can then choose the reason for a calf not being registered in that particular year. There are a few considerations to keep in mind regarding which of the options listed above to choose for a given animal. If you are wanting to keep the female in your herd for the coming years, the third option is the only way to keep a cow active and able to be assessed in the coming year. However, if the female is transferred, sold or sent to the sale barn, etc., then option one or two should be utilized. The importance of THR will continue to grow as maternal traits, such as cow longevity, become more emphasized within the beef industry. Heifer pregnancy and stayability EPDs, tools producers utilize to select replacement animals, are practically impossible to calculate without the use of THR. Ultimately, breed associations can help to accelerate genetic progress with more complete record-keeping through the use of THR, and that ability begins with accurate and complete data being submitted by the producer. F

HERD ASSESSMENTS ARE AVAILABLE BEGINNING JANUARY 1 AND ARE DUE MARCH 15 EACH YEAR.

T EC H N O LO GY Current strategies and new technology in reproductive planning from the Beef Reproductive Taskforce. FEATURE BY ZOE SCHULTZ

I

n a recent Beef Reproductive Taskforce (BRT) webinar, Sandy Johnson, Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, shared insight on reproductive planning methods and the advantages of implementing a synchronization system. As a rancher, investing in estrus synchronization is certainly not for everyone, but to see more investments in beef industry technologies, we must take advantage of its benefits and available resources. The BRT is made-up of research and extension professionals focused on promoting the wider adoption of reproductive technologies among cow-calf producers. The group brings together different expertise from across the country to evaluate reproductive technologies and provide producer-based exercises and learning opportunities throughout the year. Not only does the taskforce conduct extension research, but it also provides resources on estrus synchronization and AI protocols, free planning tools and guides to reproductive technologies. “When thinking about your calving and breeding date, you could quickly tell me particular dates for your operation, but can you tell me your cowherd’s start of the third trimester?” Johnson asks. “It’s not a high priority for most and because

28 | GELBVIEH WORLD

of its importance, it quickly became an area of interest for me.” A resource Johnson and the BRT team assisted in developing was the Management Minder, an online calendar based on the annual production cycle to let producers know when the third trimester will start. Another key focus of the team is on semen selection. There are many companies providing high quality semen, yet the protocol selection and planning remain to be the largest factor. “We really need to think about what our handling processes are, how we can heat detect and what facilities may be available for nutrition and handling prior to breeding,” Johnson says in response to the artificial insemination process. “Other questions are who’s going to do the AI, how that impacts our selection and what kind of animals we are working with and their body conditions.” Optimal reproductive performance requires year-round management and if errors are made, cows will not respond to the synchronization system. This is where the Estrus Synchronization Planner comes into play—a tool designed to help producers correctly execute synchronization protocols to achieve the best possible responses.

“The Estrus Synchronization Planner is an Excel-based tool where producers fill in the type of cattle, input details and it generates a calendar that shows when to insert CIDRs, remove CIDRs and gives us a general timeline,” Johnson says, sharing other helpful information and resources the planner offers. “Also in the spreadsheet, you have the option to indicate what products you use, when you want to turn in bulls, gestation lengths and other inputs.” The planner not only has options for producers to analyze and track tasks related to their specific herd, but also allows them to consider profitability as well. “You can compare the economics of different systems on the system cost comparison sheet,” Johnson says. “Depending on the products you use, 7 Day Co-Synch, MGA or CIDR, there is an estimated product list.” The synchronization planner allows producers to implement both fixed-time AI protocols and split-time into the system. Additionally, with the multitude of product names, both planners ensure producers can keep product names listed correctly and in order. For example, in a 14-day CIDR-PG with split timed AI for heifers, “When we give prostaglandin, it would be the same time we apply heat detection aid, read the heat detection aid at the normal time of fixed time day (66 hours after

prostaglandin) and then anything that had an activated patch we would then inseminate,” Johnson says. “The next day (20 to 24 hours later) the ones that didn’t inseminate, we would bring back, read the patches again and then perform the split time approach dependent upon the patch activation.” While the Estrus Synchronization Planner steps users through protocol selection, what are the benefits in adding split-time breeding to a fixedtime protocol? Studies show that almost 30% of cows do not show estrus by 66 hours post-CIDR, therefore the first service conception rate is lower than preferred. Additionally, delaying fixed-time insemination for the cows not displaying estrus by 66 hours may improve conception. With the use of sexed semen, those without an activated patch would get conventional semen, allowing more animals in heat aiming for the best response. Another option in the Synchronization Planner as a less preferred protocol is the 7 & 7 Synch. The 7 & 7 Synch is a protocol method focused on synchronizing estrus among postpartum beef cows. “Before we change it to a recommended protocol, we would ideally like to see

other data conditions on more types of cows, but there is some good data on the types of cows where it has been used,” Johnson says. “Where the protocol was used, the cows were high response cows with excellent body conditions and good intervals between calving and breeding. While they didn’t measure cyclicity, I believe it worked well, but we still have things to learn.” In addition to the original version, the Multi-Group Synchronization Planner allows for as many as 12 groups of females over a 12-month calendar. For producers, the original planner will be sufficient, but for AI technicians, veterinarians and purebred breeders, the multi-group version has additional capabilities. The newly adapted system allows producers to compare protocol costs and cost per AI pregnancy.

To utilize either resource, Johnson suggests downloading the planners from the Iowa Beef Center where additional instructions and reference materials can also be found. “Take advantage of the tools to assist in maximizing your protocol system. Use it to help communicate with people helping breed, print out the calendar and put it in the barn,” Johnson says. “It will help execute what steps need to happen and when and ensures getting the right product and amount.” With the management tools and resources available, producers can take advantage of achievable reproductive technologies and protocol practices to eliminate injection timing errors, optimize labor use, provide analysis and ultimately compare input costs.

“If you breed 100 heifers every week or split your cows based on the first ones to calve every week, the new system allows you to add multiple groups,” Johnson says, adding there is additional programming when adding the multiple groups.

“If we just do everything we can to help ourselves be successful in our pre-planning, I think that is the best step,” Johnson says. “I hope you use these software tools and if you become frustrated with the technology, do not hesitate to reach out.”

BRT has diligently worked to develop several management tools including Management Minder, Sync Planner and Multi-Group Sync Planner to achieve optimal reproductive performance.

JUNIOR CONNECTION

A NEW YEAR IN THE AGJA by Rachelle Anderson

E

very new year in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) is fun and exciting, and I believe that this coming year will not disappoint. With what promises to be a memorable junior classic and a new and improved AGJA strategic plan, members have a lot to look forward to.

IN THE RING

If you haven’t already done so, make sure to mark your calendars for the 2022 AGJA Crossroads Classic, July 3-8, 2022, at the Saline County Livestock and Expo Center in Salina, Kansas. The Kansas Junior Gelbvieh Association (KJGA) is working hard to make the Crossroads Classic a show we will all remember for years to come. The historic facilities are sure to give the show a nostalgic feeling. The agriculture hall and arena was constructed entirely from native Kansas limestone. This, along with the beauty of the venue, is sure to make a lasting impression on all those in attendance.

In addition, the KJGA is working to plan a night of fun for the 4th of July. The banquet will be at Kansas Beach, a local, farmer-owned venue that offers over 70 years of Kansas tradition and history.

the connection of the juniors within both the association and beef industry.

IN THE FIELD

When I think about what the AGJA means to me, the first thought that comes to mind is family, and we are very excited to say that this Gelbvieh family is growing, with membership numbers continuing to increase. The Gelbvieh breed is in high demand right now, mainly because of the tremendous attributes the breed brings to purebred and commercial operations alike. The AGJA is one of the youngest breed associations in the industry, and it is very exciting to see the next generation of cattlemen and cattlewomen take over with such passion, drive and love for the Gelbvieh breed.

The 2022 Crossroads Classic isn’t the only fun and exciting travel for the AJGA board of directors. As a team, we are also looking forward to attending and assisting with state, regional and national level shows, as well as attending the Youth Beef Industry Congress conference in April.

IN THE FUTURE

At the fall board meeting in October, the AGJA board of directors created a rough draft of a new AGJA strategic plan. The previous strategic plan provided guidance for the association over the past five years. The new plan promises to build on our previous work to be the best yet, with the new plan focusing on

The final draft of the strategic plan will be voted on during the annual meeting at the 2022 Crossroads Classic in July.

Every new year brings with it the promise of being better than the last, and 2022 holds the potential to be the best year yet. F

AGF CARCASS CONTEST RESULTS RESULTS BY LINDSAY UPPERMAN, PH.D.

T

he American Gelbvieh Foundation Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge results were presented during the awards banquet at the American Gelbvieh Association National Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration in Oklahoma City, on December 10, 2021. The 2021 Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge was hosted by Darr Feedlot near Cozad, Nebraska. This project was initiated by the American Gelbvieh Foundation to implement research for the improvement of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeds by increasing the volume of carcass data submitted to the registry. The Scale and Rail Sire-Identified Steer Contest was introduced to increase the submission of sire qualified carcass data to the AGA. Sire qualified carcass data records allow for the improvement in accuracy of the sire’s carcass trait EPDs. Furthermore, as carcass records are one of the most difficult to collect, an increase in these records will significantly help to improve the selection of carcass traits for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics. The requirements for the Scale and Rail Contest entry are as follows: 1. Animals must have one registered Gelbvieh or Balancer parent. 2. Animals should weigh a minimum of 750 lbs. with a maximum weight of 900 lbs. by feedlot entry.

3. Animals are required to have a Genomic Option 3 (GGPuLD) DNA test and must be sire qualified. 4. Tissue samples are taken at the feedlot and the cost of the test is the responsibility of the AGF. 5. All animals will get an EID tag at the feedlot. 6. All animals MUST be weaned at least 30 days prior to arrival at feedlot. The owner may select any animals in the Scale and Rail Contest to be entered into the Steer Challenge, where the donated animals are eligible to win both contests. The 2021 Scale and Rail Contest winners were Rippe Gelbvieh of Hubbell, Nebraska, Post Rock Cattle Company of Barnard, Kansas, and Stucky Beef Genetics of Salina, Kansas. The champion purebred steer for both average daily gain and carcass value went to Rippe Gelbvieh with a steer sired by Dunn’s Destination 029E. This steer averaged 3.8 lbs/day with his carcass valuing $1,949.84. Rippe Gelbvieh also raised the Champion Balancer steer for average daily gain sired by BTBR NEVADA 1170Y. The steer averaged 4.36 lbs/day. The Champion Balancer steer for carcass value went to Post Rock Cattle Co. sired by C503 Young Gun, and received $2,092.71 in total carcass value.

The Scale and Rail Contest also includes a pen division, where animals sired by the same bull (three head) can compete for total carcass value. This year, Post Rock Cattle Co. raised the Champion Pen of Balancer steers sired by VLK C503 Young Gun. The combined carcass value total for the group was $5,736.61. The reserve champion pen of Balancer steers was raised by Stucky Beef Genetics. This group of steers were sired by TTTT Mighty Hot ET and equated $5,099.83 in total carcass value. There were no purebred pens of Gelbvieh steers entered in this year’s contest. Congratulations to all winners of the AGF Scale and Rail Contest. The Steer Challenge allows for a producer to donate a steer in their name to the American Gelbvieh Foundation. The requirements for Steer Challenge entry are the same as the Scale and Rail Contest. Proceeds from the contest go to AGF. Thank you to Stucky Beef Genetics for donating a steer to the AGF and participating in the AGF Steer Challenge Contest. The 2022 Scale and Rail Contest and Steer Challenge has already begun and is being hosted by Kinsley Feeders located near Kinsley, Kansas. The animals arrived at Kinsley Feeders in midDecember. F

OUT IN THE FIELD

COMPARING SERVICE TYPE AND RETURN ON INVESTMENT by Tom Strahm

B

eginning in 2019, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) began to gather sale results of registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle sold at public auction. Sale prices of individual lots are obtained from breeders and collected from online auction websites. The information in this database is being used to help identify price trends as well as to help provide insight into what traits are collectively important to buyers. I originally wrote this article for the December 2020 Gelbvieh World, however it seems pertinent to provide an update with a comparison of 2020 results versus 2021 reports. There are 38 sales in our data set for the spring 2021 sale season, offering a total of 2,785 animals with individual prices reported. The total number of animals offered for sale is comprised of 2,331 bulls with an average price of $4,865 and 454 females with an average price of $2,619. There was a total of 3,142 animals with individual prices reported from 41 sales in the 2020 spring sale season. Of that total number of animals, there are 2,671 bulls, and 471 females included in the database. The average sale prices were $4,040 and $2,153 respectively. The total number of bull sales reported was down 12% but the average sale price was up $825 for bulls. The total number of females in the report was down 3% while the average price was up $466 for the females.

One area of analysis is looking at the service type of the sale animals, and what affect that has on sale prices. In 2021, 50% of the animals were sired by natural service, which is up 3% from the previous year. Additionally, 38% of the animals were the result of artificial insemination, 12% of the sale animals were the result of embryo transfer. The percentage of animals resulting from AI and ET are down in 2021, but the average price difference is greater than it was the previous year. The 2021 sale animals that were the result of artificial insemination sold for $805 more on average than the animals that were the result of natural service. The average sale price for animals resulting from embryo transfer was $1,442 more than natural service animals.

panel is generally used for registered sale animals and replacement heifers. You can do the math…that’s a huge return on investment, and provides your customers a little more peace of mind. ANIMALS WITH GE-EPDS SOLD FOR $553 MORE ON AVERAGE THAN THOSE WITHOUT IN 2021. After reviewing the data and updating this article, I still came to the same conclusion: Artificial insemination is one of the most effective tools available to cattle producers to make genetic progress, and to improve the productivity and profitability of their cattle operation.

Another very important tool that breeders should be utilizing is genomic testing. A couple of the benefits include parent verification, and the increased accuracy offered by Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). This is a value-added proposition for sellers and buyers alike. Our 2021 sales data shows that animals with GE-EPDs sold for $553 more on average than those animals without.

I would encourage seedstock producers to individually review their own operations and management practices. Evaluate the success and effectiveness of your current AI program.

Genomic Option 3 (GGP-uLD) costs $29 through AGA. This ultra low-density panel includes markers and parent verification if parents are on file with parentage markers with the AGA. This

By making some breeding management changes, you could potentially raise more sale cattle sired by AI sires, and then sell them for $700-$800 more per head! F

Looking at these collective numbers from sale data analysis, there is an opportunity to increase the return to labor and management for some operations.

OKL AHOMA

cattlewoman OF THE YE AR

Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association presents Connie Tabor with prestigious award. FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE

T

he 2021 Oklahoma Cattlewoman of the Year is no stranger to the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed. Long-time AGA member Connie Tabor, Agra, Oklahoma, was bestowed the honor at this year’s Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association annual convention in July. Connie and her husband, Jeff, own and operate 4T Ranch, along with their sons Craig and Chase. Today, 4T runs a primarily black Gelbvieh and Balancer cow-calf operation. “We’ve been raising feeders, too. I’ve got my label to sell meat from the farm, and I have a place on the ranch where I can sell meat by the cut or by the side, whatever the customer wants,” Tabor says of her ranch to customer retail. “We started out with just a few head while I was getting the label in place. Then when the pandemic hit we just couldn’t keep up; we’re to the point now where I’m taking in two head every month all year long.” Tabor shares that among her customers are a barbecue restaurant and the governor of Oklahoma.

“I’m very proud of the fact that the governor buys his steaks from me when he hosts a special event at his house,” she says with a smile.

to produce beef is sustainable. Beef is healthy and nutritious and just being in front of people to share that message is so rewarding.”

In addition to being a rancher and entrepreneur, Tabor also gives back to the beef industry through her service within the Oklahoma Cattlewomen’s Association. Since 2014, Tabor has been very involved in events and outreach through the Oklahoma Beef Council, visiting with consumers about their protein choices and chairing several committees. In 2023, Tabor will serve as president of the Oklahoma Cattlewomen’s Association.

The prestigious honor of being selected as Oklahoma Cattlewoman of the Year was a complete surprise to Tabor and an experience that neither she nor her family will forget. As the award was introduced and the list of the recipient’s accolades were read, another member at the table told Tabor, “They’re talking about you!”

“I really enjoy being a part of the Cattlewomen’s Association,” she says. “There is such a wealth of knowledge with these women. There are some members who are heavily involved in their operations and others who are a little further removed, but they are all so much fun to work with, and they all have such a passion for the beef industry. Our main priority is communication and getting the word out that what we are doing as ranchers

“I could not tell you what they said,” Tabor says, “after that point, my ears were ringing and I couldn’t talk. I finally got it together and was able to accept it and present another award, but I’m still just in shock because as you look around the room, you see so many women who are deserving of the award and you just feel so honored to be picked by such a dedicated group.” Congratulations, Connie!
