FROM THE CORNER OFFICE

FEEDING A GROWING WORLD by Megan Slater

I

n June, I had the pleasure of attending the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Research Symposium and Convention in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This is one of my favorite industry events to attend, and I always come away a little more energized and excited to be a part of the seedstock segment of the industry. Each year it is amazing to learn about the new research and advancements taking place with genetics in the beef industry. Through many of the presentations during this year’s BIF convention, we were reminded why these advancements are necessary, not only for the viability (or sustainability) of the beef industry, but to feed the ever-growing world population. As input costs continue to rise and resources, such as land, become fewer, organizations like BIF and producers working together for the continuous improvement of beef cattle, is that much more important. A theme within the AGA’s new strategic plan, and a large part of the AGA’s new vision statement within this plan, is positioning Gelbvieh and Balancer® as the standard for beef production efficiency. Looking through the genetic trends over the past 20 years, which can be found on page 28 of this July Herd Reference Edition, it is evident that the members of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) are committed to the improvement of the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed. There are many facets to making Gelbvieh and Balancer the standard for beef production efficiency. A more moderate mature cow who raises a big heavy calf, breeds back year after year, and stays in the herd for several years is the picture of efficiency within a cowherd; these are all things the breed excels at. As we look at some of those

traits where we have an EPD to measure progress, such as weaning weight, heifer pregnancy, and stayability, we continue to see improvement in those areas. Other important traits such as calving ease and marbling have also seen continuous improvement over time. Looking at calving ease direct and birth weight, two trends that are favored heavily by many producers when selecting their next genetics, the Gelbvieh and Balancer breed has increased calving ease and decreased birth weights. Calving ease direct predicts the percent of unassisted birth of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving

lower birth weights but heavier weaning and yearling weights. Heifer pregnancy is also an important trait when looking at cowherd efficiency. Heifer development is expensive, especially if the heifer ultimately comes up open at the end of the breeding season. Any open female on the ranch, especially one who has not yet provided any return in the form of a live calf, is costly and inefficient for an operation. The AGA’s heifer pregnancy EPD predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season and is expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters settle as first calf heifers. When looking at the genetic trend for heifer pregnancy, the breed continues to see improvement in this area.

Seedstock producers play a vital role within the industry and are responsible for creating the genetics that will impact the beef industry for years to come. In one presentation at this year’s BIF convention, Dr. Milt Thomas, a well known professor and — Megan Slater researcher in breeding and genetics, commented how much the world population is expected to grow by the ease. Easier calving animals ultimately year 2050. He then offered that 2050 is equates to losing fewer calves at birth due only five to six genetic selections away to calving difficulty and less manpower and asked attendees to let that sink in for needed during calving season. It is a second. For this reason, it is important important to note that birth weight is an that we continue to make improvements indicator trait for calving ease but it also and positive change not only within the has a correlation with the other growth traits such as weaning weight and yearling breed, but within the entire beef industry. F weight. When we select for heavier growing cattle, that often coincides with a heavier birth weight calf. Over time, Gelbvieh and Balancer producers have done a good job selecting cattle with

BUILDING A BETTER BREED WITH DATA by Klint Sickler

elcome to the 2022 Herd Reference issue of Gelbvieh World. Since the earliest days of our association, the Herd Reference edition has been the issue that highlights the breeders and operations that make the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed great. Whether you are looking to network with fellow breeders, find that next must-use sire, or catch-up on the latest happenings in the association and industry, this is the issue you want to keep on the coffee table. Growing up, my father kept quite the collection of back issues of the Gelbvieh World and Gelbvieh Country, going back to 1985, when our family became involved in the breed. Many evenings were spent flipping through the pages of those old copies, trying to soak up as much history as I could. Every page

contained new information on pedigrees, show winners, and people and ranches that were setting the direction for the breed. For a young pup like me, those pages were filled with inspiration. Not only did I want to meet the folks I read about, I wanted to learn more about their operations, their cattle, and move our program along to the next level. The herd reference edition is one of those magazines that we always seem to pull off the shelf when we need to jog our memory. More than once, I’ve seen ads or articles that I refer back to months or years down the road. Who was that ranch that advertised that really nice black bull last year? I think I saw an ad about a female sale sometime this fall, but I can’t remember the date. Grab the herd

reference edition and you’ll probably find your answer. I’d like to take a moment to say, “thank you” to all those ranches and operations that have supported this magazine over the years. Not only are you promoting your program to the thousands of readers who receive this issue, but you are now part of Gelbvieh history. When we gather for our 75th or 100th anniversary celebration and the past herd reference issues are spread on the table, you’ll be recognized as one of the trendsetters of the breed. And somewhere, an 8-year-old kid will page through that magazine, be inspired to start their own herd, and look up to you as their inspiration. F

on and Kay Harwood operate the Harwood Ranch, a commercial cow-calf operation, in the extreme northwest corner of Nebraska. The Harwoods primarily purchase Balancer® bulls and retain their home raised heifers as replacements. Their ranch is situated in the Badlands and the Pine Ridge of Nebraska near the Oglala National Grassland. Other nearby attractions are Toadstool Park and the Hudson-Meng Research Center. “The Pine Ridge in western Nebraska is beautiful year around. Most people do not know that the state of Nebraska has this type of terrain! We have a lot of natural protection for our cattle in the winter,” Kay says.

Cory is married to Cassidy and they have three children – Carly, Olivia, and Wyatt. “Both boys have some cows of their own and live within one and half hours of us, so they are able to come help when we need to vaccinate, brand calves, pre-condition, pregnancy check, test bulls, and freeze brand replacement heifers. They all like to help when we go to pasture and also with rotations, when they can. They are a big help to us,” Kay says with pride. “Ranching is a great way of life and the best place there is to raise kids!”

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED USING GELBVIEH AND BALANCER GENETICS?

In the early 80’s we had the old-style Don grew up on a ranch near Union Hereford cows. It seemed the sale barns Center, South Dakota, and has always had were looking for larger framed cattle, cattle of his own. and we were looking to change to a black hided animal. We like using Balancer bulls to get the benefits of crossbreeding; you get that extra vigor in the calves at birth, and then they just continue to grow well. We keep our own heifer calves for replacements to keep the genetics we have in our own herd. The early maturing females are another positive thing we appreciate.

WHAT TRAITS ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU WHEN SELECTING BULLS TO PURCHASE? When purchasing bulls, we try to stay around 50% Gelbvieh. We like the benefits of crossbreeding, and it gives us a few more bloodlines to choose from. It is important that cattle have good feet in our country, the bulls need to be able to travel in rough terrain and cover some ground – it is a necessary trait for us. Good conformation is also important in this regard. The EPDs that are important to us include calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, scrotal, and milk. We try to stay about in the middle for milk EPD. We don’t want to get too much milk for our environment, and we want to keep good udders on our cows. Our cows pretty much calve on their own, so calving ease and birth weight is something we watch closely. We like to look at weaning weight also as we market our steers either right off the cow or if we have the feed, we will wean all the calves for 45 days, it just depends on the year. We also look closely at scrotal

HOW DO YOU MARKET YOUR CALVES? We sell our steer calves at Crawford Livestock Market in the fall. If we’ve had a good year for hay production, then we will wean our calves for 45 days before selling them. If we don’t have enough hay then we’ll sell them right off the cow.

feel the fertility of Gelbvieh helps us get closer to achieving that goal.

We would want to achieve higher weaning weights along with the cattle being feed efficient.

And all of this information and opportunity hinges on keeping accurate records and knowing how those affect your bottom line – keeping good records should be just as important to you as it is to the Association. Knowing where we’re at is the best foundation to lay in order to get to where we’re going. The benefits are endless when it comes to knowing how your herd lines up with the American Gelbvieh Association’s expected progeny difference (EPD) averages. As you’ve heard multiple times, the AGA Online Registry Service provides tools to help our members in multiple ways to make sound decisions from day one. Creating custom reports allows members to provide themselves with the information they feel is important without cluttering a spreadsheet with details they are less concerned with at the time. Leveraging the resources on the online registry can provide members with peace of mind that they are on the right track, or allows them to see where adjustments can be made in the feed, breeding decisions, grazing etc. To access the Custom Report option on the AGA Online Registry Service, after logging into your account you’ll want to first locate the “Reports” tab located on the left of your screen. After clicking on “Reports” a page titled “Standard Customer Report” appears. This page in itself offers a wide variety of information. Sire EPDs can be found in the account’s quick sire list, a production summary of all active dams, as well as a performance summaries for all animals can also be created. This page also allows the member to select birth, weaning, yearling and ultrasound information based on dates. This provides an easier and more manageable way look at data

on different sets of animals. All report options, aside from “Custom Report Builder” are template built and provide the same data each time with the exception of the animals selected within the date range provided in the middle of the screen.

everything has been selected, information is retrieved either by clicking on the PDF or Excel spreadsheet link located at the top of the page. The PDF or spreadsheet will pull the information selected for all the animals that fall into the parameters set by the member. From there the member can analyze the data to get a better understanding of the animals in the herd. If you’ve already pulled data previously on a specific set of animals and forgot to save the information on your computer, a full list of previously ran reports can be found at the bottom of the page available in the format that was selected. Specific data can help members plan for the next generation and make sound and economical decision where improvements can be made. For any questions on how to navigate the registry, please call the AGA office at 303-465-2333. F

Don’t see something you’re looking for or wish a standard report had just one more column with a specific data report? For more specific reports, utilize the “Custom Report Builder.” There are many ways to customize data on this page: set specific date ranges, sex, and other parameters. After a specific group of animals is chosen, select other sortable criteria. The page offers growth and maternal EPDs, pedigree information, production data, and information regarding genetic testing. After JULY

JUNIOR CONNECTION

GROWING UP IN THE BEEF INDUSTRY by Alexx Starr, AGJA President

B

eing an advocate for the beef industry is hard. Being a junior advocate in the beef industry is even harder. Luckily for us, both are worth fighting for! With a little bit of networking, this industry can set anyone up for success. Through this strategy alone, I have gained the confidence, communication skills, and connections that I was missing. I have grown in these areas immensely since joining the junior board.

to be confident in what we do, who we are, and what we have to offer. For myself, this can only be gained through experience. Problem solving and having successful outcomes is what has built up my confidence the most. Being taken seriously and respected as a young individual has also given me the passion to keep pushing forward. I am sure I can speak for a lot of juniors in my position when I say that having support from our peers is what continues to drive us to excel in what we love to do.

CONFIDENCE

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

This is an area that I believe is the toughest area for juniors like myself to grow in. Confidence is the most important aspect when it comes to being successful or even relevant in the beef industry in general. We need

Communication is not just about talking, it also has a lot to do with how well you can listen. Communication does not always come easy. I have been able to grow so much with the endless calls, meetings, and events that I have been a part of through being a junior member/ advocate for the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed. For all your AI needs: I have been fortunate enough to grow up and get a head start on professional development through the beef industry. From meeting people at shows • Sheaths • Salers • Gelbvieh to selling cattle, • Gloves • Shorthorn • Angus I have honed my • Cito Thaw Units • Dairy • Red Angus communication • Tanks • Charolais • Simmental skills by listening • A.I. the beef industry get a head start in communication!

CONNECTIONS I believe the saying goes ‘it’s not what you know it’s who you know’. I have found this to be true time and time again. The people you meet along your journey is what the journey is all about. You never know who you might meet along the way so it is important to treat everyone with kindness and respect. When I was in Texas for Youth Beef Industry Congress (YBIC) one of the things that every beef leader that I met had in common was the fact that they all got to where they are because of their connections and hard work. Connection goes hand in hand with networking. I believe that networking and the industry connections it builds is the most promising tool in building a prosperous future. With all that being said, some of the younger generation who are currently active in the beef industry might not end up there. What they will take from their experience in the industry, however, is the skills needed to build a successful foundation in any field they choose to pursue. Professional development, responsibility, dedication, problem solving, communication skills, and confidence are just a few things on a very long list that the beef industry offers both to myself as well as many other juniors. There is a reason that employers want to hire ranch/farm kids, and I have been extremely fortunate to grow up in an industry that has given me countless opportunities and skills. I only hope to give back and represent the beef industry with the admiration it deserves. F

A Sustainable Path Forward for the Beef Value Chain BY LAURA HANDKE

I

n 2022, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) board of directors voted to join the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (USRSB) as a member. AGA executive director, Megan Slater, says that the resources USRSB provides, as well as the opportunity for AGA to have a voice in the conversation, is a winwin for both association members and the beef industry, as whole. “I think relatable voices, like former USRSB Chair, Steve Wooten, who served as a speaker at our 2021 Annual Convention, help our membership to put different pieces of sustainability into perspective and realize that, as an industry, our producers are doing so many things right,” she says. Formed in 2015, today USRSB serves as a collective messaging platform for its 134 members – of which half are beef producers. Since inception, conscious effort has ensured that every sector is well represented. As incoming chairwoman, Debbie Lyons-Blythe, Blythe Family Farms, says that representation is the cornerstone of ensuring USRSB continues to move forward to advance sustainability throughout the beef value chain. “Our membership is very representative of the beef industry. 50% of the 134 members are individual producers – like me,” she says. “Every sector is represented: producers; feedyards; auction markets – such as the Livestock Marketing Association who has been involved since the beginning; packers and processors – like the organizations who make hamburger pattiess for McDonalds; and retailers like Burger King, Taco

18 | GELBVIEH WORLD

Bell and McDonald’s, whose end-goal is also selling beef. The members that a lot of people don’t think of are civil society organizations like The Nature Conservancy and World Wildlife Fund, who don’t directly produce beef but play a role in the industry. Those groups have to be at the table, too.” Allied industry also has a seat at the table and is made up of pharmaceutical, equipment, technology…any company that has a stake in the beef industry. Every sector has four voting members, two primary members and two secondary members, and that structure keeps the board very balanced. And while the board does provide the leadership, Lyons-Blythe shares that the direction is steered by the working groups. Current working groups include: Outreach, Communications, Goals Committee, Recognition Program Committee, Project and Resource Review Committee, General Assembly Planning Taskforce, and Feed Sustainability Taskforce.

WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY? Many in the industry ask why the beef industry should be rallying around sustainability. The answer, Slater says, is that sustainability isn’t going anywhere. “The sustainability conversation is big. It’s real and it’s not going away; we finally have an opportunity to have a seat at the table rather than on the table,” she says, adding that this is the time for producers to share their stories.

Lyons-Blythe agrees, going a step further to add, “Sustainability is just doing the right thing, and our producers are good at doing the right thing. Best management practices are going to help us do a better job on the farm, anyway. American beef is already the most sustainable in the world, but there’s this whole movement pointing the finger at cows, and we have to be able to prove what we are doing in the industry. If we can’t prove what we are doing, we are opening our industry up to campaigns like “Meatless Monday” and other activist campaigns,” she says. One of the most important ways the beef industry can combat false information around sustainability is by setting goals and recording outcomes to produce measurable data to prove that stakeholders throughout the value chain are doing what they say they are and utilizing the resources they say they are. To build and capture data, USRSB has created opportunities to measure sustainability as well as a path forward in improving sustainability for every sector – every stakeholder along the value chain from the cow to the processing line to the meat counter and every step in between has metrics for improving their operation’s sustainability.

HIGH-PRIORITY INDICATOR OF SUSTAINABILITY Although we typically hear about the environmental pillar of sustainability, economic and social betterment are also inherent to the definition of sustainability. The USRSB defines sustainability using six high-priority indicators that fall

on improving and documenting practices and husbandry. One of the pathways USRSB is using to help achieve animal welfare goals is the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification program, a national effort aimed at “Although we tend to first think about raising consumer confidence through environmental sustainability, all aspects the training and certification of proper are equally important. That is why we use management techniques at the farm and six high-priority indicators that take into ranch level that ensures a commitment to account every part of a business,” said quality within every segment of the beef Lyons-Blythe. “We have to ensure that industry. The program initiative directly not only our land is taken care of, but also contributes to USRSB’s target to increase our people, our animals and our bottom the number of individuals trained and line. In order to be truly sustainable, all of certified in BQA by 10% year-over-year. these things must be successful.” “We have to tell our sustainability The USRSB targets for the producer story. By letting others tell the story, sector include actionable items that we’re setting ourselves up for potential many producers are already doing. misinformation. But if we respond and The producer target for environmental provide the data to prove what we know indicators involves a grazing management – that we have always been focused plan. The aim is to achieve 385 million on sustainability and working towards acres covered by a written grazing doing better – it will have a real impact management plan by 2050. Grazing on those civil society members and our management plans not only improve retail members to help them also tell our land resources like forage production, story. This is how we keep beef on the water holding capacity and nutrient flow, plate,” Lyons-Blythe shares, adding that but they can also help with succession the average cow herd size in the U.S. is planning and to boost a business’ bottom 40 cows. “It’s going to take us all and, line through a reduced dependency on honestly, the smaller herds are where we supplemental feed and/or irrigation. can make the most progress.” under the three pillars: land resources, water resources, air & greenhouse gas emissions, employee safety & well-being, animal health & well-being, and efficiency & yield.

The producer target around animal welfare on the farm and ranch centers

GENETIC CONTRIBUTION Slater says that breed associations are poised to play an even larger role in sustainability by helping members find and utilize performance genetics. “What we know today is that a smaller cow that weans a larger calf every year, without requiring a lot of additional resources, those cows are the picture of sustainability. Providing the tools for commercial customers to select highly efficient cattle is one of the most important jobs a breed association has,” she says. Known for docility and high fertility, the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed and the producers who utilize those genetics know that sustainability starts with the cow. Cows that yield more pounds of beef using fewer resources is a win for everyone from the producer to the consumer. Lyons-Blythe simplifies sustainability further, sharing that for her family the definition is easy: “Take care of the land. Take care of the animals. Take care of the people and make money.” It’s simple logic everyone can get behind.F

Homo Black Homo Polled 50% Balancer. Sire of the steer pictured in this ad. Probity was the winner of the 2017 Balancer Futurity and is the sire of the 2020 Futurity and National Champion Balancer Bull, Rebel Yell, who in turn sired the 2022 Balancer Futurity winner, Go Time. He sired the high-averaging balancer group in our 2022 production sale and his daughters are among our most valued replacement females.

Homo Black Homo Polled 70% Balancer .Post Rock Top Gun is one of the all-time best bulls ever produced in our program. He was a phenotypic standout at an early age and has developed into a most impressive herd sire who’s perfect in his feet and leg structure and has great depth and mass in an eye appealing design. We use him on our purebred 94% and higher females to make purebreds with few equals and on our females who are less than 30% to increase our Gelbvieh percentage back closer to 50% level.

Homo Black Homo Polled 53% Balancer. Co-owned with Cedar Top Ranch. High Life was purchased as the most sought after and highest selling balancer bull in the 2021 sale season. He is proving to be an ultra calving ease option whose progeny quickly gain mass and dimension. We are incredibly excited about his first calf crop and are looking forward to his first sons selling in the 2023 Post Rock Production Sale.

This Post Rock bred and raised steer is in the current AGF Steer Challenge. We are proud that two of our resident herd sires, Game Changer D136 and Young Gun C503 have both sired Champion Individual Steer for carcass value and Champion Pen of Balancer Steers in the official AGF Scale and Rail Contest. We continue to test all major herd sires in this highly structured AGF contest.

Mid-Year Report

I

t is hard to believe that we are mid-way through 2022. These past six months have been filled with planning and strategic execution geared toward the promotion of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed. We are excited to share the mid-year update that follows, and we look forward to the continued opportunity to serve our membership through the remainder of 2022 and beyond.

ASSOCIATION NEWS Mark your calendars for December 7-9, 2022, to join the AGA in Louisville, Kentucky, for the 52nd Annual AGA National Convention. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Louisville. This year’s convention will include association business during committee meetings and the annual meeting, educational opportunities at the Cattlemen’s Profit Roundup and industry tour, as well as networking and social events such as the kick-off reception and bull pen session. The event will once again culminate with the awards banquet where we will celebrate and honor those

who have made a lasting impact on the breed. Be on the lookout for more information in Gelbvieh World, the bi-weekly e-news, and on Gelbvieh.org. Registration opens August 15, 2022.

AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION (AGF) The AGF plans projects targeted in three focus areas: youth development, research, and member education. These projects include American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) scholarships and research projects such as supporting the Carcass Data Collection Project and the ongoing AGF Scale and Rail Carcass Contest and Steer Challenge.

MARKETING AND BREED PROMOTION AGA staff has traveled to 44 production sales through the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022. The majority of the sales were held in the spring, and were very well attended by generally optimistic

commercial buyers who showed a strong demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics. AGA staff members attended the National Cattleman’s Beef Association annual convention held in Houston, Texas, as well as several other conventions and trade shows. The Gelbvieh team will also be promoting the breed at several state and regional field days and convention events through the remainder of 2022. From a marketing perspective, AGA advertises with several livestock video auction companies and we will be attending numerous video sales through the summer sale season. Additionally, breeders can also encourage their commercial customers to utilize AGA marketing programs when selling calves and feeder cattle. Feeder Finder is a free advertising service, and Balancer® Edge offers value-added opportunities through our partnership with IMI Global.

Mid-Year Report AGA PUBLICATIONS, SOCIAL MEDIA AND ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES The AGA team is excited to deliver industry-leading news and information to mailboxes and inboxes through Gelbvieh World, Profit Picture, the bi-weekly e-news update, and Monthly Member Insight. In order to reach our membership with fresh and informative content, we also ask members to share ideas and information that is relevant to your operation and interest. These ideas allow us to dig deeper, visit with industry experts and deliver information you want to read, when you want to read it. Gelbvieh World is also offered in a digital only format. To switch your subscription to receive only a digital copy of Gelbvieh World or to submit content ideas, email Gelbvieh World Editor, Laura Handke at laura@gelbvieh.org. This year we’ve seen an increase in reach on our social media pages as we continue to see people in agriculture and the beef industry become increasingly active online and as we’ve started to focus advertising efforts from our social media pages. The AGA and AGJA Facebook and Instagram pages continue to be a resource for members and a way to communicate the Gelbvieh and Balancer message to both members and their customers.

22 | GELBVIEH WORLD

In 2021 and 2022, the AGA produced episodes of the American Rancher. The October 2021 episode highlighted Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle from across the country that thrive in environments from high altitudes in Colorado to fescue pastures in Missouri. The February 2022 episode focused on ranchers that find Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics to have a positive impact not only on their cow-calf operations but in the feedyard as well. Episodes of the American Rancher and NCBA’s Cattlemen to Cattlemen featuring Gelbvieh & Balancer can be found on Gelbvieh.org and on the AGA Youtube channel. To help your operation capitalize on the great marketing and advertising tools offered by the AGA publications and social channels, the AGA digital team also offers services to create and place advertisement and content. Work with AGA to create engaging ads, e-blasts and sale catalogs as well as place them in the right location to reach your customers.

DNA TESTING, FEMALE GENOTYPING PROJECT AND BREED IMPROVEMENT The first six months of 2022 have brought a few changes to the AGA’s DNA department. Beginning in May, DNA testing requirements for both AI sires and

donor dams changed from the GGP HD test to the GGP 100k test. This change allows members to get influential animals permitted to be AI sires and donor dams for a fraction of the cost. The AGA also launched our Cow Power Female Genotyping Project, and we are excited to offer this option to all our members who are interested in getting genotypes on file for the females in their herd. This project offers members who are willing to commit to testing ninety percent of their cowherd the opportunity to order GGP 100k tests at a discounted price. Participation in this project qualifies members for an additional rebate upon the input of both mature weights and body condition scores for those tested females. Additionally, as the association continues to grow, we continue to see more DNA samples being sent for testing. In just the past five months over 400 more samples have gone through Neogen than this time in 2021. This is an exciting time to be apart of the AGA, and we look forward to helping you with your DNA needs throughout the remainder of 2022!

The base for any breed improvement project is quality data collection. The AGA continues to put emphasis on data collection and reporting through projects such as the Cow Power Project and Carcass Data Collection Project.

MEMBER EDUCATION Providing member education resources is an on-going goal of AGA. One of the ways we are exploring to accomplish this goal is by hosting webinars with industry thought-leaders as well as leaders from emerging markets and opportunities. In March, AGA launched its first education webinar featuring Agoro Carbon in a discussion of carbon markets. The event drew participants from across the country and can be viewed under the educational webinars tab found below news and media. We’re excited to continue to develop new ways to reach members with timely information and education. As always, if you have any topics that you would like to learn more about, please reach out to laura@gelbvieh.org.

Statistical Overview MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION GELBVIEH & BALANCER ® GENETIC TRENDS T

he graphs below illustrate the genetic trends for the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed for the past 20 years. It’s amazing to see the genetic progress that has been made by an AGA membership dedicated to improving Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. Lowering birth weight while increasing weaning weight and yearling, as well as an increase in marbling are just a few examples of traits that continue to see improvement. Figures within the graphs charted here are representative of both the Gelbvieh and Balancer population combined.

DNA STATS O

ver the past several years, AGA members have embraced DNA testing and have provided an enormous amount of information to the AGA registry, which is then used to better predict the genetic merit of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. AGA members are commended for embracing this technology to provide their customers with the most reliable genetic prediction possible.

Statistical Overview THE AGA COWHERD W

hile Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle can be found throughout the United States, there are areas of the country with a higher concentration of the breed. The accompanying map gives us an idea of where the AGA’s cowherd resides by showing the number of assessed cows during the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which ran from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021. The Midwest again takes the top ranking for number of assessed cows, however, an increased interest in Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics has been seen in the Southwest regions as well.

meeting modern industry demands For decades United States consumers have continually recognized the value of superior beef products. Such recognition has driven the growing demand of a superior beef eating experience on a national and global scale. The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) commitment to the consumer and meeting modern industry demands has led to the launch of the Carcass Data Collection Project. The Carcass Data Collection Project is designed for AGA members and their customers. This project is a breed improvement directive, providing vital genetic information to re-charge the carcass database and enhance the predictability of current selection tools. AGA will pay genotyping costs of participating calves, genomic analysis will be completed by Neogen GeneSeek. Recognizing the increased expectations of commercial cattlemen, the AGA is dedicated to delivering the industry with the genetics that are smart, reliable and profitable from the ranch to the rail.

REWARDS and benefits • Larger carcass record database • More powerful genetic improvement tools • Increase predicting power of the genomic panels • Enhanced economic indexes • Improved carcass EPD accuracies

FEMALE GENOTYPING PROJECT

Discover the Cow Power in your herd The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project is a collaborative effort with the American Gelbvieh Association and Neogen to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information on females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. 34 | GELBVIEH WORLD

Members will receive a special research price of $25 on a GGP 100k genomic test to DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory.

Requirements:

Participants that submit mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of their current active cow inventory will receive an additional, one-time $4 rebate per head.

*This is a research project and DNA turnaround time, data processing, and other timelines within this project are not reflective of current AGA turnaround times.

DNA samples must be collected with an Allflex Tissue Sampling Unit. Blood and hair samples are not eligible for this project.

For more information or to enroll in the project, contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email registry@gelbvieh.org.

AGA FEMALE GENOTYPING PROJECT

T

heAmerican Gelbvieh Association (AGA) announced the release of the Cow Power Female Genotyping Project in April 2022. This research project, in collaboration with Neogen, is an initiative aimed at collecting more genotypes and valuable phenotypic information on active females within the AGA’s herdbook. Increasing the number of female genotypes paired with mature weights and body condition scores will help strengthen the predicting power of EPDs and selection indexes that describe Gelbvieh and Balancer®influenced cattle.

Tissue Sampling Units (TSUs). Blood and hair samples are not eligible for this project. Orders that include 50 or more TSU samples will need to be submitted in 96-well DNA trays. DNA testing supplies including TSUs, TSU applicator, and sample trays are available for purchase through the AGA office. Due to this being a research project, DNA turnaround times, data processing, and other timelines within this project are not reflective of current AGA turnaround times.

To participate, members will first need to fill out the enrollment form which includes all requirements and details of the projects. There are a limited number of research genotypes available and enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact the AGA for more information or to enroll in the project, at 303-465-2333 or email registry@gelbvieh.org.F

The Cow Power Project offers members the opportunity to receive a research price of $25 for a genomic test on females in order to DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory. Participants who submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of the current active cow inventory will receive a one-time $4 rebate per head. Not only does this important information help to strengthen the AGA’s database and improve genetic predictions, members will also see benefit by having this information collected on their own cowherd. Because females typically only have one calf per year, it can take years before data is collected on even just a handful of her progeny. For traits such as weaning weight and yearling weight, a genomic test can offer as much information as having 25 calves on the ground. For marbling and back fat, it’s the equivalent to having 10 progeny reported on for those traits. Having this type of information on every female in the herd not only helps increase the accuracy of EPDs but allows producers the knowledge to make more informed breeding and selection decisions. To be eligible for the project, DNA samples must be submitted using Allflex JULY

GELBVIEH’S STATE AND REGIONAL ASSOCIATIONS ESSENTIAL FOR BREED’S GROWTH

S

tate and regional associations play an important role in the dissemination of the Gelbvieh and Balancer® message throughout the country. In the U.S. there are 17 state and regional Gelbvieh associations. A state Gelbvieh association is an independent organization and affiliated with the American Gelbvieh Association. Primarily, state associations help

increase the demand for Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics and foster relationships among seedstock breeders, commercial producers, and allied industry partners within the state and region. Activities of state associations can include state sponsored Gelbvieh and Balancer sales, field days, tours, meetings, shows and junior events.
