Welcome to our 8th Annual Bull Sale! Cattle prices remain strong, feed costs have eased off and the future looks bright in the cow-calf business! We are very excited about this group of Bulls. They’re long, thick, balance multiple traits and do it in style. They are the result of a continuous A.I. program that Dad started over 40 years ago, and an aggressive Embryo Transplant program over the last decade. You’ll find quality herdbull prospects in every pen from the beginning to the end of the sale, and several that could headline any sale in the country. Our breeding program utilizes every tool and technology available to aid in our selection, culling and mating decisions, including EPD’s, A.I., Embryo Transfer, DNA technology, actual and adjusted weights, carcass ultrasound on Bulls AND Replacement heifers, and actual closeout data with carcass information on our own and some of our customers fed cattle. The registered herd runs with and are managed the same as the commercial herd. Cow weights are taken each fall and compared to her calf’s weaning weight. We are striving to have our cattle be the best possible across the board for all economic relevant traits. We believe our balanced-trait superiority approach will increase your profitability in quality cattle for years to come. Customer service and marketing assisstance is our top priority next to producing top quality Bulls! We stand behind our cattle with the best guarantee in the business and won’t charge any extra fees to do so. We know that our success is found in your success with our genetics. Join our customers that sell reputation calves to repeat buyers, with a growing number of order buyers taking notice. Join us Saturday, January 25. Come early, stay late, and enjoy good cattle, good food and good people.

This is the same article we have used for several years, but it is as relevant today as it was then.

The following is from an article titled “What Feeders Want” from the November 2009 Beef Magazine from an interview with Tom Brink, Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer of Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, the world’s largest cattle feeding enterprise with a combined capacity of 839,000 head of cattle. “We sell about 1.5 million cattle a year on a grid, and we’ve done it for quite a few years. So we have the ability to go into the data and find out what is working for us.” “The animal that works for us is typically 50-75% Angus and 25-50% Continental. That gives you an animal that does a lot of things right and is easy to manage too. They typically get big enough but not too big, they won’t get too fat, they can stand a little variation in days on feed and they will give us a carcass that works.” He goes on to list specific numbers from cow size to feed efficiency from all their data, but summarizes it all by saying “It’s a long winded way of saying keep some performance in your cattle.” “Not only do you get paid for heavier weaning weights with those kind of calves, but feed yards will pay up to own cattle with more performance. Its worth it to us and that makes it worth it to you.”

New Generation AGA EPDs The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.

Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDs The true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.

Growth Traits are More Reliable

Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus

The new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.

Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.

Carcass Traits are Standardized In recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-tofinish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable. For questions or more information contact the AGA at 303-465-2333 or visit www.gelbvieh.org.

Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal more unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.
