Good Night progeny are super low birth, with accelerated growth to yearling. Warner Beef Genetics, Cedar Top Ranch
This cow family has produced herd sires (including Vision and Bandelero) that are active in other herds. His dam is an ideal female in type and kind—and these genetics are continuing on in the Good Night offspring. He has more than 100 progeny on the ground to date.

A member of Judd Ranch’s 2007 Nat’l Champion Pen of 3, this beef machine is flat loaded with beef, butt and guts. His super dam, JRI Ms Pld Grand Prix 213G57, is a Judd Ranch donor and is a four-time Dam of Merit female.
This low-birthweight/widespread growth bull is one meat machine. His sons feature that same widespread low-birth-to-super-growth trend and are indeed beef packers. Profit Agent daughters are absolutely tremendous females.

AGA Executive Committee
Off to a Great Start The Gelbvieh breed and the American Gelbvieh Association are off to a tremendous start for 2011. The demand for beef and Gelbvieh genetics is high. Market prices for feeder calves and fat cattle are on the rise, with futures projections at levels we have not seen in some time. And, we’ve had an excellent National Western Stock Show, annual convention and 40th anniversary celebration. Things are positive and we are moving forward as we continue to build momentum for the breed and the association. The outstanding success of the 2011 AGA annual convention and 40th anniversary celebration is a great way to start the year. Member attendance at the annual convention was up. I want to thank all the members who came to Denver and participated in the committee and annual meetings. From the discussion that took place during these meetings and the input of members, the Board of Directors is better able to make decisions that will benefit the association as well as you, the members.
The overall attitude of the membership is positive. The AGA is moving in a positive direction. I would like to congratulate Bill Clark on being inducted into the AGA Hall of Fame and Bob Hart on being named Member of the Year. Both Bill and Bob are highly devoted to the Gelbvieh breed and have made – and continue to make – significant contributions to the breed. It was also nice to recognize the individuals who have been members of the AGA for 35 years or more. As we look towards the next 40 years, we will need individuals with the same passion and dedication to Gelbvieh as that of our 35+ year members. As I talked with members during convention, it was obvious that the overall attitude of the membership is positive. The AGA is moving in a positive direction. We can build on the success of events such as 8 | March 2011
the December Kansas City seminar and the NWSS to continue to provide opportunities for membership. The national advertising program is working. The second of the “Add Pounds. Add Profit.” inserts went out in January. Five days after the insert was in the High Plains Journal, while standing in the ring at the NWSS, one of our area coordinators got a call from a guy looking for Gelbvieh cattle. Brandon, Don and Steve all say they have been getting more calls from commercial cattlemen who are looking for Gelbvieh and Balancer® bulls and females. The National Gelbvieh Sale was tremendous both in quality of cattle offered and prices. This year the sale was held in the Livestock Arena at the yards and there was a standing room only crowd. Thank you to Cattlemen’s Connection and the national sale consigners for providing the beef brisket meal prior to the sale. The sale averaged at almost $6,800 and has helped generate excitement for Gelbvieh cattle from those outside the breed. The national sale sets the pace for the rest of Gelbvieh sale season. March is the height of bull sale season. There are many opportunities for commercial cattlemen and seedstock breeders to find the right Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls or females to fit into any program. Reports from early sales have been good. I look forward to serving as president of the AGA for the next year. There are many programs and opportunities for members to take advantage of. I am excited about possibilities to continue to expand our programs and services and create more value for our members. I also looking forward to working with members and if you have any thoughts or comments about the association or your membership, please let me know. Together we can ensure this great start we’ve had continues all year and beyond. Jim Beastrom is the president of the American Gelbvieh Association. He owns and operates Beastrom Ranch in Pierre, S.D. Jim can be reached at jimbeastrom@mncomm.com or 605-224-5789.

Leader’s Ability to Manage Change Will Determine Success Leading change is a hot topic for the business world and rightfully so. The United States is still an economic powerhouse, but we are no longer the singular giant among the world’s nations. This fact makes the need for change an omnipresent requirement for all leaders. As a leader you have to be a person capable of leading your organization or business through endeavors requiring change. Today’s leaders have to be experts in leading change. If not, they face a dismal future, as does the organization or business that they are leading. This is because the world is constantly changing. Some people naturally dislike change, that is a given, but change is the key to survival. Change can be insanely unpopular for some people. I consider owners, managers and breeders of seedstock and commercial cattle as the leaders and CEOs of their programs. The cattle business is two words – cattle and business. Both aspects have seen change and evolution through the years. There has never been a time when breeders have had abundant tools with which to create a product that fits the needs of the consumer and the individual producer. DNA and genomics can guarantee a product that has black coats and no horns as well as a multitude of other traits. EPDs show the accuracy of production levels on a staggering number of traits that are important not only from a level of production but as well the docility of animals. Carcass ultrasound and RFI data prove the worthiness of animals not only in the future efficiency of the cow herd but also to the feeder and packer. DNA tests assists in assuring the consumer a tender product and a pleasurable eating experience. Genetic evaluation and technology has allowed for us to produce more beef with less in terms of cow numbers and other inputs. The true leaders in the cattle business, either a seedstock supplier or commercial producer, have embraced the tools that are available. We find that these are the most successful people in the cattle business. In 10 | March 2011
all cases a satisfied customer base and one that is growing by producing a product or providing a service that fits their customers’ needs is a common denominator. Bulls and females that do not have performance or carcass data rarely top sales. Sellers of feeder cattle that can provide health management and prior feedlot performance records will top the market, not the ones that do not provide this kind of information. Producers that claim their buyers don’t care about such information don’t care about their customers. Make your product something other than a commodity in the market place in order to demand top prices. Eliminate the unknowns for your buyers and it will help in adding to your success. The American Gelbvieh Association has continued to change and build on the services and programs available to membership and commercial producers. To date, forty-nine services are offered ranging from information services, marketing and breed promotion efforts and various member educational programs. It is not the same association that was created forty years ago. The leadership, those who have served on the Board of Directors over the past forty years, has grown the association to better serve the needs of membership, so membership can better serve their customers. Are you taking full advantage of what your association has to offer? Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric once said in talking about the economic health of an organization or business, “If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near.” Cattlemen should consider this statement in the development of their marketing plans and breeding programs in the coming year. You have the tools to become a leader in the cattle business. Frank Padilla is the AGA director of breed promotion and can be reached by email at frankp@gelbvieh.org or by phone at 303-465-2333.

www.gelbvieh.org – New Website Coming Soon The American Gelbvieh Association is excited to launch a new website that has appeal to members, commercial customers, and people seeking more information about Gelbvieh. For the past several months, staff has been working to update the Gelbvieh website, www.gelbvieh.org. We anticipate going live with the new site in the very near future. The Gelbvieh association first launched the website in the spring of 1996. The site has been redesigned since then to its current look. We have now outgrown this site and are excited to launch a new site which offers an attractive look, ease of navigation, and updated content. The new site is designed with the purpose of being the first point of content for anyone seeking information about the association or the breed – whether AGA members, AGJA members, potential new members, commercial customers or anyone wanting to learn about Gelbvieh cattle. Once on the homepage, individuals can easily navigate through the site to find what they are looking for. The Board of Directors supported the website redesign by approving funds to contract with an outside website vender, Goozmo, LLC based out of Boulder, Colo. Goozmo was able to offer the wide variety of programs to fit the complex needs of our website, including an attractive design, a calendar, and a user friendly program to post sale cattle listings. Content and Organization No doubt, the biggest and most time consuming challenge of launching a new site was updating and organizing the content. We took a look at all the content on the current site and decided what could be updated, what was no longer relevant, and what new content to add. The content is organized in seven tabs with pull down menus across the top of the page. The tabs include: Home, Why Gelbvieh, Membership, Juniors, Exchange, Education Center, Communication. With these tabs, people will have an easier way to navigate to the information they are looking for. Places to Be The site will feature a new calendar for “Places to Be.” Items entered into the 14 | March 2011
calendar will be sortable by categories of sales, shows and events, and then subcategorized into AGA, AGJA, member, state association, and industry. People will have the option of whether they want to view all items on the calendar, or, for example, they can choose to sort for only upcoming sales. The calendar is very user friendly. Additionally, the calendar program offered by Goozmo allows for more information about each event to be listed. Under the current “Places to Be” there are only six fields with limited space for which information about the event can be added. The new calendar will have 11 fields including: description of event, start date, end date, time, location of the event, address, city, state, contact phone, contact email, and website. Contact Jennifer Scharpe, AGA director of communications for information on how to add your sale, show, or event to the “Places to Be.” Sale Listings When doing the redesign of the new site, one of the biggest considerations was how to make the feeder calf listing, replacement female listing, and bull listing more user-friendly for both sellers and buyers. The free listing service, part of the AGA Commercial Marketing Program, includes seller contact information and a
brief description of the animals including number and age range, color, breed description, photos and other information. AGA members interested in posting their animals in the feeder calf listing, replacement female listing or bull listing will be able to do so from their own computer. Members will be required to create a log-in account to be able to post their listing. The log-in is simply a way to avoid SPAM and other unwanted posts within the listings. Each listing will have 14 fields for which information on your sale cattle can be added. The fields vary slightly for each listing to be able to include the most pertinent information for each category of cattle. We know members appreciate the sale cattle listings and fully utilize this service. We also know that potential buyers use the listing service as lots of cattle have been sold through these listings. Overall, the new listings will be an improvement of our current listing service. We look forward to launching the new website. We invite you to take some time to explore the new site and would appreciate any feedback to ensure the site is meeting the needs of members, commercial customers, and others interested in Gelbvieh.

Technology Briefs AGA members that attended the 2011 convention heard a technology update during the annual meeting and had a preview of the new animal search and on-line registration system. In the coming months we will highlight features of the new registry system that will be available to AGA members as well as changes that are visible in reports and recording services.
What are these animals I see in my pedigree’s with an AMXX number? You may have noticed on Performance Pedigrees or Registration Certificates that
an animal back in the pedigree may now be designated with an AMXX######. This animal was originally recorded as a Foundation or “F” animal with a breed composition and possibly a birth date. Typically these were commercial females in a herd that when bred to a Gelbvieh or Balancer® bull produced a calf that merited registration as a Gelbvieh Hybrid. One of the challenges with the old system was there was no permanent way to ID commercial females and if they had Hybrid offspring in multiple years, the lack of the permanent ID disallowed a connection for performance recording and EPD purposes. So now that these females are recorded
with an AMXX number, calves in multiple years can be recorded with this AMXX number as the dam. These females will show up on your herd assessment cow inventory and credits can be purchased just like for registered females. The AMXX females will be listed on the herd assessment in the section labeled “Non-Registered Females.” For identification purposes on the herd assessment in the name field there will be notation LC: AMGVxxxxxx (Last Calf and Registration Number) for the last recorded calf of this female. In the long run this paves the way for the AGA to begin to build the resources to offer performance data like Lifetime Cow Summaries and EPDs on these commercial females. For those AMXX females that perform better than the breed average EPDs they would have been previously assigned, will have their new calculated EPDs reflected on their progeny’s pedigree estimated EPDs. For AGA members that maintain both a registered and commercial cow herd, having this data on the AMXX cows will be better to evaluate young herd sires that are first proven on the commercial females before they are used on the registered cows. In some cases the AMXX is listed on the sire portions of a pedigree. Going forward, instances where breeders use multiple sire pastures an AMXX designation can be given to multi-sire (MS) groups. For example, a breeder has two large breeding pastures each with four bulls per pasture. The bulls in Pasture 1 can be designated, for example as, Bar-AGA 2011 MS Pasture Group 1 and Pasture 2 can be labeled Bar-AGA 2011 MS Pasture Group 2. If some of the calves are subsequently sire verified the sire can later be changed to the actual registration number of the bull. In the future it may be possible to assign the group an EPD profile that reflects an average of the bulls in the group rather than an average that is closer to the breed average based on the breed composition of the group.
When will the new on-line search capability be available? This is how the on-line Animal Search will look with the new registry system. The Animal Search will have the capability to search using EPD accuracies.
16 | March 2011
We anticipate the new on-line search capability will be enabled in March. In addition to the search functions currently available in the Animal Search screen on
AGA Programs aga programs
I understand that the AGA will not be automatically sending EPD reports and lifetime cow summaries when members return herd assessments. One of the challenges with printing these reports is that the data is outdated almost as soon as it is printed. With the new on-line capabilities that are available with the registry system, members will be able to print these reports on demand. As such the data they will obtain will be timelier and completely reflect all recorded progeny. Members who do not have easy access to the Internet and on-line search capabilities can still request printed copies of these reports once they return their herd assessments.
Susan Willmon
the AGA website, minimum and maximum values can be designated for EPD accuracies. This will allow members to look for animals with higher accuracies as part of a sire selection process. As well, this system will provide an up to date listing of animals in the database. If calves are recorded without any errors they will be included in the database population for searching once processing is complete, compared to the current system where the on-line database is only updated twice yearly. An updated member locator will be also available. Member information will be presented in such a format that while email addresses can be listed they can not be “scraped” by spammers which should decrease the exposure of AGA members to SPAM emails.
This is a look at the new member locator. Member information will be formatted to avoid member susceptibility to SPAM.
Watch for more information regarding the on-line capabilities and the process to access the on-line registry module as soon as it becomes available.

Miss the action at the AGA annual convention or National Western Stock Show or want to relive the moments? Be sure to check out the American Gelbvieh Association’s YouTube channel for video shot during the NWSS. Staff is working to compile complete videos from many of the events including the open show, junior show and bull futurities. In addition, the videos shown during the annual convention celebrating the 40th anniversary have also been posted on AGA’s YouTube channel. Members can also check out AGA’s Facebook page to view video clips from NWSS and photos that we uploaded during the week of the show.
Herd assessment due date approaching Annual herd assessments have been mailed from the AGA. If you did not receive your herd assessment call the AGA office and a new assessment will be issued. An important reminder to AGA One-Rate users: if you plan to register an animal in 2011 and participate in the one-rate system, herd assessment fees must be paid first. Otherwise traditional rates, that are not refundable, will be charged. If you need assistance or have questions in completing your assessment, please contact the AGA registration department at info@ gelbvieh.org or 303-465-2333.
Check your Igenity Hair Cards
Igenity has informed AGA that there was a printing problem with some hair cards getting duplicate barcode numbers. If you have a hair card with a barcode number that is similar to SG0000009999 (basically any tag that is between 1 and 9999) please discard the cards. Please call Igenity or the AGA office for replacement haircards.

During the recent 2011 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association annual convention, farmers and ranchers from across the country joined Greeley, Colo.,-based meatpacker JBS USA to donate 16,000 pounds of beef to the Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver. It’s believed to be the largest ever donation of beef to the Denver-based food bank. Additionally, JBS S.A. announced in early February, the appointment of Joesley Batista as chairman of the company’s board of directors and that his brother, Wesley Batista, will succeed him as president and chief executive officer. Joesley Batista led the Brazilian meat giant’s international growth efforts over the last five years, including its acquisitions of Greeley, Colo.-based Swift & Co. and then-Pittsburg, Texas-based Pilgrim’s Pride, now operating under JBS USA. Wesley Batista led JBS USA as CEO through four years of restructuring, expansion and integration of the company’s North American and Australian assets. JBS is now the world’s largest animal protein processor, with 140 production facilities and more than 125,000 employees spanning Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Australia, the United States, Uruguay, Paraguay, Mexico, China, Russia and other countries.
Make plans to attend BIF in Bozeman It’s not too early to mark your calendar and make your reservations for the 2011 Beef Improvement Federation meeting in Bozeman, Montana. The complete program and registration information can be found at http://www.beefimprovement.org/ convention.html. Last year a record number of AGA members made the trip to Columbia, Mo., for the meetings. While there are BIF sponsored tours planned for June 4th as a part of the meeting, let us know if you are planning to attend and AGA staff can possibly arrange some visits with AGA members located near Bozeman.

Building a DNA Legacy Developing a DNA Panel for Gelbvieh and Balancer® Genomic EPDs The use of DNA for selecting beef cattle has been on the rise since early in the last decade. DNA tests have expanded from selection for a single trait to panels that provide genomic data that can be incorporated into EPDs. The American Gelbvieh Association has been actively engaged as the technology advanced. Gelbvieh breeders have been some of the more frequent users of the various DNA test from both sire selection and marketing perspectives. By participating in projects such as the 2000 Bull Project sponsored by the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC) and US MARC, the AGA has obtained over 144 purebred and Balancer® sires with 50K genotypes. Beyond this the AGA Board of Directors authorized
funding of additional genotyping and as such 50 additional Balancer bulls have been genotyped on the 50K panel. To date our population of 50K genotyped animals number slightly less than 200. Through some research with both Igenity and Pfizer in the past year, we have learned that the existing genomics panel developed for the Angus breed does not predict very well in the Gelbvieh breed or the mixed Gelbvieh and Balancer population. As well outside research done at various universities are finding that breed or population specific panels provide the most benefit in terms of trying to incorporate genomic panels into EPDs. In December 2010, Susan Willmon, AGA’s director of breed improvement and AGA Board of Directors Al Knapp and
Mark Goes attended an NBCEC sponsored symposium in Kansas City. This meeting was attended by breed associations, DNA companies and university researchers working toward the goal of further incorporating genomic technology in the seedstock industry and as well in the across breed genetic evaluations. What we learned from this meeting and other research developments is that in addition to these breed specific panels we need a significantly larger population of animals typed on the 50K panel to provide a training and validation population for Genomics research. The bottom line in regards to the development of a useable panel for Gelbvieh breeders means the collection of DNA from Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls as well as potentially some Angus and Red Angus

This population needs 400 to 600 additional animals over our currently typed sires. Additionally this research effort would require a significant financial investment to accomplish the genotyping as currently generating the 50K genotype can cost upwards of $100 per sample. As a first step we are asking AGA members as we are approaching AI season to take a look in your semen tank and see if there are any bulls in your inventory that you would be willing to donate for this research. Initially we would like to obtain bulls that have more proven accuracies. A list of bulls that we would like to inventory DNA sample for can be found on the AGA website. As well we have listed those bulls that have already been 50K genotyped. Ideally this DNA donation would be 5 straws of semen but 1 to 2 straws or ampules would
be helpful as well. After we collect DNA on highly accurate bulls we may also seek DNA on donor females as these cows tend to have higher EPDs accuracy as well. In addition to the process of collecting DNA, the Productivity Committee and AGA Board of Directors are working towards finding sources of additional funding to help finance the cost of the genotyping. If you have experience in the process of writing grants we would appreciate your help in accessing some outside sources of research dollars. Long term development of a genomics panel for Gelbvieh and Balancer bloodlines is an important component of the breed’s ability to evaluate and improve traits that are difficult or expensive to measure. If you have the ability to donate DNA or have grant writing expertise you would like to contribute towards this project, please contact Susan Willmon at susanw@gelbvieh.org or at the Gelbvieh office.

News news Industry Update
How High for Prices? A smaller beef herd reported in USDA’s Jan. 1 Cattle inventory estimates has provided the cattle markets with even more bullish news. Beef cow numbers continue to fall as producers seem to want out of the business, said Purdue University Extension economist Chris Hurt.
Increase of dairy numbers
Continued decline of beef numbers
“Beef producers seem to want to get out of the industry. What will change their attitudes? There are two key factors--a return to profitability and more abundant forage and feed supplies. Since the number of heifers being retained is so low, it will be late in 2011 or early 2012 before any movement toward expansion will occur,” he said. The economist said it is possible that corn and soybean meal supplies could increase with large 2011 crop production. Unfortunately, given the limited number of acres available, trend yields may do little to increase inventories, keeping the 2011/2012 marketing year prices high and volatile. Increasing concerns about dry conditions throughout the southeastern states as well as the central and southern plains will keep producers from expanding until those conditions change. Those three regions account for 55 percent of the beef cows, he said. (See USDA/NOAA “Drought Monitor” at http://www.drought.unl.edu/ dm/monitor.html ).
“The continued decline is related to multi-year financial discouragement due to high and volatile feed prices, shortages of pastures in some areas last summer, and developing dry conditions in the Southeast and the central and southern plains. Beef cow numbers at 30.9 million head are down 2 percent over the past year and down 6 percent since 2005,” he said. Regionally, the largest decline in beef cows was in the western Corn Belt, where numbers declined by 168,000 head in the past year. This decline was led by Missouri with 103,000 fewer head and Iowa with a 45,000 head reduction. The southern plains had a reduction of 166,000 head, led by Texas with 115,000 fewer head. The southeastern region had the third largest decline with a reduction of 121,000 head, he said. “In the eastern Corn Belt, beef cow numbers declined by 35,000, led by a reduction of 37,000 cows in Illinois. Illinois has had a 24 percent decline in beef cow numbers since 2005. The only area of increase was in the northern and central plains, as cow numbers continue to concentrate somewhat more in the center of the country,” he noted. Producers are planning to continue to reduce numbers even further. The number of beef heifers being retained for breeding purposes is down 5 percent. This means that beef cow numbers should continue to drop at least into the USDA July inventory report. The expected 2011 calf crop should be about 35.3 million head, down 1 percent as well, he said. 26 | March 2011
The dairy industry seems to have different views as they have increased both cow numbers and retained heifers by 1 percent. This industry has failed to reduce numbers sufficiently given high feed costs and is operating at a loss. It is likely the dairy industry will have to trim herds and reduce milk production to get producers back to profits, he said. Beef producers want out
How high will beef prices rise? “Prices have already been record high and seem assured of making new highs throughout 2011. Live cattle futures prices on Jan. 31 are suggesting that finished cattle will average about $113 per hundredweight for the year with quarterly prices of $108, $116, $112, and $115, respectively. These prices are supported by recovering U.S. and world consumer incomes, small beef and pork supplies, and a rapid increase in pork exports,” he said. Oklahoma 600- to 650-pound calves sold in early February at $132 per hundredweight, whereas 500- to 550-pound
calves were at $146. The strength in calf prices over the past six months means that finished cattle prices have increased enough to cover the much higher corn and soybean meal costs to finish cattle. Unlike the rising feed prices of 2008, the surge in feed prices over the past six months has been met by increases in both live cattle and lean hog futures prices, he said. “Weather in 2011 and 2012 will probably be the deciding factor determining when the beef cattle industry will shift from
Unlike the rising feed prices of 2008, the surge in feed prices over the past six months has been met by increases in both live cattle and lean hog futures prices. liquidation to expansion. Favorable weather that provides above-trend corn, soybean, and wheat crops, along with abundant forages, could shift the industry into expansion by 2012,” he said. Much lower feed prices would provide strong financial incentives to expand brood cow numbers. Trend yields should provide modestly lower feed prices, and calf prices will rise proportionally next fall, providing some financial incentives to expand brood cow numbers. However, below-trend yields and shortages of forages would keep the industry in a state of contraction with even higher finished cattle prices in 2012, he said. “Much is riding on the weather in 2011 for both crop and livestock producers--and for everyone who enjoys multiple meals a day at moderate costs,” Hurt said. Barnard, Kansas native and partner of Post Rock Cattle Company, Bill Clark is the 2011 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Hall of Fame inductee. Clark was recognized during the 2011 AGA annual convention, held January 7-8 in Denver, Colo. “Bill Clark is a cattleman, a dedicated worker, and a family man. These characteristics and so many more place him in a category of long respected and valued American Gelbvieh Association members,” said Dana Stewart, AGA director of member services. Clark was nominated by the Kansas Gelbvieh Association (KGA). Clark entered the seedstock business in 1951 with a polled Hereford heifer. Over time his eye and selection for high-quality beef genetics led him to the Gelbvieh breed. In 2010, Post Rock Cattle Company celebrated their 25th annual Gelbvieh production sale. It was their most successful sale to date with 96 bulls averaging just over $3,000. As a key player in the Gelbvieh breed, Post Rock Cattle Company has raised and used several breed influencers including DCSF Post Rock Top Brass, DCSF Post Rock Black Savvy, DCSF Post Rock Bouncer, DCSF Post Rock Heartland, JEB Polled Gizmo, BTI Extra 2106K and MRCO New Direction.
Bob Hart, Kansas City, Kan., has been named the 2011 American Gelbvieh Association Member of the Year. Hart was recognized during the 2011 AGA annual convention, held January 7-8 in Denver, Colo. Every year the AGA honors an outstanding member who gives their time, talent and dedication to further the improvement of their state and national association. Nominated by the Heart of America Gelbvieh Association (HAGA), Hart is a distinguished recipient of this award. Owner of Hart Farm Gelbvieh located within the Kansas City area, Hart has built a small, but progressive Gelbvieh herd. “Since 1996, we have concentrated on breeding the best red genetics our breed has to offer. We’ve selected our females carefully and used the breed’s top A.I. sires,” comments Hart. Fellow HAGA member Mike Shrewsbury describes the Hart farm’s genetic program as powerful red cattle that would make anyone proud to own. “Hart Farm Gelbvieh has produced several A.I. sires and donor quality females as well as show heifer prospects. These cattle are his pride and joy and it shows when you talk to him about Gelbvieh,” he said. When Hart is not at the farm or promoting Gelbvieh, he can be found at his advertising agency, the Hart Agency located in Fairway, Kan. He uses his career in advertising to benefit HAGA. Bob develops state customer ads for the breeder directory, and edits and publishes the directory. Additionally, he edits and publishes the HAGA state paper, Golden Cattle News. He has served as the HAGA secretary/treasurer for six years, co-chairman for the HAGA state sale, and carries out the state association’s advertising plan.
Bill and his wife, Marlene, have three daughters and one son, and ten living grandchildren. Bill’s son Leland and his wife Jan, as well as their children Meredith and Quentin, play a very active role in the day to day operations at Post Rock Cattle Company. “It is truly a team effort in the production and promotion of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle at Post Rock,” says Bill. “I have no greater joy than my grandchildren, be it working cattle, harvesting grain, throwing bales, water rafting or mountain climbing. We are meant for each other.” Clark has been actively involved in the KGA and helped organize and host the first traveling state association tour. On the national level, he has served on several committees including productivity and national sale. Bill also served two terms on the AGA Board of Directors and helped make decisions on blended breed EPDs, whole herd assessments, and the Balancer program. Locally, Clark has served on the Extension board, as well as the board chair. He has also served on the Farm Bureau board, is a charter member of the Lincoln County Cattlemen’s Association, and has been a Sunday School teacher and chairman of his church’s Pastor Committee.
An avid supporter of youth, Bob often attends the American Gelbvieh Junior Association regional shows and Junior Classic to support Gelbvieh juniors. He gives generously to sponsor meals or awards for state and national junior events. Recently, Hart was elected to his first term on the AGA Board of Directors. “It’s very easy to see the example that Bob sets towards others in leadership through service. His countless hours of work and promotion have no doubt left a long-lasting impact on Gelbvieh throughout Missouri and the surrounding states,” says Dana Stewart, AGA director of member services. Outside of the Gelbvieh breed, Bob is a member of the Kansas Livestock Association and a supporter of Wyandotte County 4-H and its annual auction. He is also a member of the Arabian Horse Association and the Kansas City Direct Marketing Association, among many others. Gelbvieh World | 29

Producer Confidence In Beef Checkoff Growing
Research Reveals Value of Selecting Calm Cattle
A survey of 1,200 beef and dairy producers nationwide was conducted in late Dec. 2010 and early Jan. 2011 by the independent firm Aspen Media & Market Research. This research found that producers’ attitudes toward the beef checkoff program are quite favorable and have improved noticeably in the past year. Currently about three in four approve of the program, a fivepoint positive shift in the past 12 months. There only has been one other time in checkoff history, where approval levels have increased by at least this amount in a one-year period. The last time approval levels were this high was in 1994. Producers have consistently tended to rate the checkoff positively. In the past five years, approval levels have ranged between 68 percent and the current level of 74 percent. “Knowledge about the checkoff continues to predict favorability toward it,” says Wesley Grau, a cow/calf farmer from Grady, N.M., and chair of the Joint Producer Communications Committee (JPCC). “Producers who are ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ well informed are more likely to approve of the checkoff, particularly among those who say they are very well informed. Among this group, 86 percent approve of the program (51 percent of them strongly), while only 10 percent disapprove. This finding marks a significant 8 percent positive shift in the past year. This tells me producers are not only getting to know their checkoff but are also very satisfied with what they learn.” To that measure, the underlying value of the checkoff remains strong: a large majority (81 percent) feels the checkoff program has helped contribute to a positive trend in consumer demand for beef; a similar number (80 percent) believe the program has value in weak economic conditions or are confident (77 percent) it is on their side during a crisis. And, when it comes to their own operations, many producers believe the program has benefited them. A large majority (68 percent) believe it helps contribute to the profitability of their operations, up sharply from a year ago. “A key goal as identified by the JPCC is that farmers and ranchers have a positive view of the way the checkoff is being managed. That they trust in the leadership and the decisions being made about their checkoff investment,” says Grau. “This research shows that management of the checkoff is viewed favorably with 66 percent saying they believe it is being managed well.” A copy of the research report is available online at www.beefboard.org. For more information about your beef checkoff investment, go to www.MyBeefCheckoff.com.
Recent research has demonstrated the value of cattle with calm temperaments and the price producers pay for keeping wilder animals in their herds. A five-year Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station study found that cows with poor temperaments can affect the entire herd and reduce producers’ bottom lines. Rhonda Vann, MAFES associate research professor in Mississippi State University’s Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences, led the study in Raymond at the Brown Loam Branch Experiment Station. “We suggest that producers evaluate their herds and the cattle they buy,” Vann said. “You don’t want a cow or steer that’s unreceptive, but one that’s a bit more docile. They are going to have less sickness, gain weight better, do better in pastures and be more productive for the producer throughout their entire life span.”
The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval. 30 | March 2011
Cull out cows with poor temperaments Vann said the most applicable findings in her research is to cull cows with poor temperaments out of the herd. Researchers measured how a trio of cows behaved while in a 12-by-12-foot pen and how a single cow behaved while in a chute similar to what contains bulls before being released at a rodeo. In both cases, the cows’ behavior was measured after they were approached by humans. The research also used laser technology to gauge how fast a cow traveled 6 feet after being released from a chute. For each part of the experiment, the cows were given a score on a 5-point scale. The scale ranged from 1, describing cows as not aggressive, docile, walks slowly, easily approachable and not excited by humans to 5, describing cows as very aggressive, excitable, and out of control. The pen scores and chute scores were nearly identical, and the higher-scoring cows almost always exited the chutes at accelerated speeds. “The pen score measures aggressiveness, and the exit velocity measures their flight response: how quickly they want to get away from the situation,” Vann said. “Basically, the more aggressive they are, the quicker they want to get away from the situation.” Vann said anxious, aggressive cows, or those with a pen score of 4 or 5, present a host of problems. “They become sick more often, have more difficulty gaining weight and damage farm equipment. Their rowdy behavior rubs off on cows that would otherwise be perfectly calm,” Vann said. “Cow behavior even affects meat tenderness, as certain hormones such as cortisol and enzymes remain at higher levels in stressed-out cattle, possibly toughening the muscle. All of these problems directly affect a cattle producer’s profit margins.” Genetics plus human treatment Vann said the primary factor relating to cow behavior is genetics. If a high-strung bull and a wild female mate, the result will be a high-tempered calf.
Ill-tempered cattle typically bring in $5 or $6 less per hundred pounds of body weight than do calmer animals.
Danny Martin, the 2009 Mississippi Cattleman of the Year, owns a ranch in Raymond and can attest to these findings from experiences with his own herd. “Ill-tempered cows have to get antibiotics more often, and they don’t come up to eat with the rest of the cows and get the proper nutrition,” he said. Martin said he once sent several cows to a feed lot experiment at MSU, including one that was irritable. “When I sent the cattle, there was no more than a 50-pound difference between each of them,” Martin said. “However, when the animals returned, the ill-behaved
But genes do not tell the whole story. Vann said a calf ’s mother usually influences its behavior more than the bull, since the mother raises the animal and provides a constant presence. However, Vann said that all cattle are susceptible to learned behavior. “I’d say how humans treat the animal is 25 percent of it, followed by 10 percent being the environment,” she said. “The rest would be genetics; however, we are still investigating what makes some animals more aggressive than others.”

steer weighed 966 pounds, while all the others weighed over 1,200 pounds each.” According to the study, which was published in the “Professional Animal Scientist,” cattle with high pen scores typically incurred higher medical expenses than lower-scoring cattle. In addition, ill-tempered cattle typically bring in $5 or $6 less per hundred pounds of body weight than do calmer animals, Vann said. An aggressive cow weighing 800 pounds may net $480 less than its non-aggressive counterpart. However, high scorers usually won’t even reach that weight since they have trouble gaining bulk. AGA Programs aga programs
Do You Have the Gelbvieh Performance Advantage? GPA applications due April 15 for the 2010 Management Year
In only its second year, the American Gelbvieh Association’s Gelbvieh Performance Advantage (GPA) program is gaining in popularity. AGA members are using the GPA program as a way to gain recognition for all the data collection they do throughout the year. More importantly, members are able to use the GPA program as a way to set their breeding program apart from others as they provide a value-added service to their customers with the data they collect. GPA applications for the 2010 management year are due on or before April 15. The application is pretty painless – simply requiring members to list the data they have collected during the last year. Members receive points for having growth and performance records, using AI, doing DNA testing, and using sires that excel in tenderness, carcass value, milk and scrotal circumference. The GPA program is unique within the seedstock industry. It provides a new means for Gelbvieh breeders, both small and large, to promote the performance aspects of their program. The GPA program has three recognition levels – bronze, silver, and gold – based on the total points received for the performance attributes of each program. From now through April 15, 2011, we will be accepting qualification forms for the second year of this program. Instructions and qualification forms can be found on the AGA website in the Library/Resources section or can be obtained by requesting them from the AGA office. An April 15 deadline, that coincides with the Herd Assessment deadline, will allow us to review the forms in time to recognize qualifying members in the July 2011 Herd Reference Edition of the Gelbvieh World. We would appreciate that the qualification forms and worksheets be filled out completely and any supporting documentation included. Multiple memberships that include animals that are managed together can be submitted on one application and will be recognized at the achieved level of those grouped memberships. Last year the program recognized seven members for their performance advantage. These members are the pioneers and early adopters of this program. We look forward to the continued growth of this program when these members are joined by others who use the GPA program as an incentive to incorporate additional performance data collection into their everyday management routines. 46 | March 2011
How does it work: AGA members can qualify at specific levels based on established criteria. Criteria is based primarily on collecting and submitting performance data as well as potentially using sires that meet or exceed certain requirements. How many levels are there: Bronze, Silver and Gold level. What is required to reach these levels: Members are able to pick from a menu in order to accumulate the points necessary to reach each level. Validation Process: The process requires submission of a simple questionnaire/application certifying meeting of criteria at specific level. What is the timeframe for this qualification: GPA status will be awarded yearly based on the previous calendar year. Applications are due April 15 so that the information can be validated in time to be included in the June/July Herd Reference edition. Who is eligible: All AGA and AGJA members in good standing are eligible to participate in this program. Full details and program worksheets can be found on the AGA Website at http://www.gelbvieh.org/ library_resources.htm.

Junior News junior news Rippe Donation Heifer Sets Strong Pace for 2011 Thanks to Rippe Gelbvieh of Hubell, Neb., AGJA members have lots to be thankful for. DBRG Miss Twister Classic, donated by Duane and Brenda Rippe, along with Dustin and Carla Rippe, raised nearly $11,000 that AGJA will be able to use in promotion efforts, Junior Classic expenses, and miscellaneous projects. A special thanks also goes to Taubenheim Gelbvieh of Amherst, Neb., for feeding and fitting the heifer prior to being shown at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). While at NWSS, Krajewski Gelbvieh of
Venango, Neb., stalled Miss Twister Classic. After hundreds of tickets were sold by hard working AGJA members at the AGA Convention and NWSS, the lucky winner of the drawing held during the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Sale was Tim Myers. Tim is the grandson of Jim and Terrie DeGeer, DeGeer Gelbvieh of Erie, Kan. Thank you to all who purchased any number of tickets to support AGJA. The annual AGJA donation heifer is a critical fundraising project for AGJA and each ticket purchased is greatly appreciated.
AGJA member Grace Hammer showed the 2011 AGJA donation heifer, DBRG Miss Twister Classic at the 2011 NWSS open show.
Be A Part of “12 in 12” It’s never too early to start planning for a unique way to support AGJA. This past fall, the AGJA Board of Directors moved to create a “12 in 12” campaign to kickoff in 2012. AGJA is asking that you consider giving 12 percent of the proceeds from the Lot 12 animal in your sale. Your pledge to give “12 in 12” makes you part of an elite group of AGA breeders who want to make a statement in supporting
AGJA. “12 in 12” gives you added promotion for your sale, all the while showing that you value the future of the Gelbvieh breed. If you’re interested in participating, please contact Dana Stewart, AGJA staff advisor. All participants in the “12 in 12” program will receive special recognition throughout the course of the “12 in 12” campaign.
Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity Awards Scholarship The annual Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity Scholarship was selected during the 2011 AGA Convention and National Show. Chosen from the strong group of applicants was Katlynn Sullivan of Robertsdale, Ala. Katlynn, the daughter of Larry and Marie, has been active in the AGJA attending
regional and national shows. She completed a term as the AGJA Senior Ambassador and served on the AGJA Board of Directors. She has been an active member of the Alabama Junior Cattlemen’s Association and is a junior at the University of South Alabama.

This bull was champion Balancer bull at the 2010 American Royal and Iowa State Fair, and was reserve champion at the N.A.I.L.E. and National Western Stock Show. Calf Management
News news Help Baby Calves Start Breathing
Tendon Troubles in Newborn Calves Require Quick Attention
All baby calves are born with some degree of respiratory acidosis. Respiratory acidosis is the buildup of by-products of carbon dioxide and a deficiency of oxygen. As the calf passes through the birth canal, it undergoes this buildup of carbon dioxide and its metabolites, and a deficiency of oxygen. When any baby calf is first born, it will gasp for air and pant for a few minutes in an effort to correct the carbon dioxide/oxygen unbalance in the circulatory system. Therefore, when a calf is completely delivered, primary attention is directed toward establishing respiration. Mucus and fetal fluids should be removed from the nose and mouth by cleaning these air pathways with your fingers and thumbs. These actions are important for any calf that is assisted during the “calving” process, but they are critical for those calves that come backwards. The common practice of suspending the calf for an extended time by it hindlegs to “clear the lungs”, must be questioned. Most of the fluids that drain from the mouth of these calves probably come from the stomach, and the weight of the intestines on the diaphragm makes expansion of the lungs difficult, if not impossible. Respiration is stimulated by many factors, but only ventilation of the lungs, allow us to render help immediately. The phrenic nerve can be stimulated with a sharp tap on the chest slightly above and behind where the heartbeat can be felt. Brisk rubbing of the skin (if the calf has not had frost bite) can be helpful in stimulating circulation and breathing activity. Perhaps the most effective and simple approach to stimulating the first breathing activity is by tickling inside of the nostril with a stiff piece of straw. The vigorous tickling stimulation of the nostrils will cause the diaphragm of the calf to have a noticeable reflex. As the calf snorts and coughs in reaction to the straw stimulation, the lungs expand and air is taken in. Many ranchers report that this is a very effective way to get a baby calf started on the necessary process of rapid breathing. Always know your own limitations. If you find a calving situation that you cannot solve yourself in a short time, contact a large animal veterinarian as soon as possible.
Every now and then calves are born with a condition called contracted tendons. It results in the calf not being able to straighten out its front pasterns so they can put their hooves flat on the ground. “Calves that have this end up walking with the hooves turned back. Some people refer to this also as knuckling,” said Eldon Cole, a livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension. The problem surfaces out of the clear and seems to affect a few calves then it disappears.

56 | March 2011
Possible causes “I’ve read about it and visited with veterinarians. The conclusion is nutrition, intrauterine positioning and genetics may all play a role,” said Cole. The minerals that may be involved are manganese and selenium. Vitamin D and E also play a part in muscle and tendon growth in the infantile calf. Certain plants (I lupine, locoweed and poison vetch), if eaten by the pregnant female at just the right point in gestation may contribute to the problem. Autosomal recessive genes have been known to cause musculoskeletal defects in infant calves. “If the problem occurs in the herd, you might do a pedigree check to see if the sire and dam are closely related,” said Cole. The most often mentioned theory revolves around insufficient room in the uterus for extension and growth of the tendons. “This seems logical to me if the affected calf is big, and a bull calf which it seems often is the case, said Cole. The affected calf normally straightens out after hobbling around several days. It’s important in the first few days to make sure the calf nurses so keeping the cow and calf in a smaller area is advised. “I’ve heard lots of home remedies such as massaging the pastern area, using splints or casts and these may speed recovery. Others will just leave them alone and they also straighten out,” said Cole. “Unfortunately, this condition does not have a well-defined cause or solution that I’ve been able to find.” Source: Eldon Cole, University of Missouri

Protect Cattle and Profits
Spring deworming can help keep cattle parasites at bay and strengthen producers’ bottom line Economically important parasites often differ according to geographic region, but, according to Gary Sides, Cattle Nutritionist, Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Operations, there is one parasite for which cattle producers in all parts of the country should keep an eye out this spring: the brown stomach worm. “There are about nine different parasites that cause problems, but Ostertagia ostertagi — or the brown stomach worm — is the No. 1 most damaging internal parasite in cattle,” Sides says. “In the most severe cases, Ostertagia ostertagi can inhibit feed intake, meaning cattle don’t gain like they should and can’t fight off other health issues as easily.” Because the brown stomach worm, and other stomach worms, are bloodsuckers, they cause irritation and inflammation to the stomach and intestinal linings of cattle. As a result of inflamed or irritated stomach lining caused by parasites, infected cattle can’t properly absorb nutrients as they normally would.1 In fact, research has shown that the brown stomach worm and other parasites could cost the industry up to $3 billion annually in lost weight gains, poor feed conversion and increased disease.2 “Especially with calves, if you don’t deworm, the response can be the same as non-implanted cattle — you can give up that many pounds,” Sides says. “If you don’t deworm while the calves are on grass, then you give up subsequent feedlot performance. You can see poorer dressing percent, lower quality grade, and all just because of the parasite infection while the cattle are on grass. Even if they’re dewormed later at the feedlot, it’s too late to make up for the lost growth potential.” Dr. Sides recommends producers deworm cattle in the spring to help protect against Ostertagia ostertagi and other parasites that can potentially rob cattle of performance and producers of profits. “Injectables really do the best job on internal parasites, but lice control is better with pour-ons,” Sides says. “With the producers I talk to, I tend not to be as concerned with the external parasites. I would rather kill the internal parasites that can do the most to slow down growth and feed efficiency.” For Sides, a broad-spectrum dewormer, like DECTOMAX® Injectable (doramectin) is the best option to help control the brown stomach worm and other internal and external parasites. In fact, DECTOMAX Injectable treats and controls Ostertagia ostertagi for up to 21 days and is safe for pregnant cows, newborn calves and bulls. “If left untreated, parasites can do a number on any herd,” Sides says. “With DECTOMAX, I know the label claims for internal and external parasites are superior. That’s why I continue to recommend it.”
Important Safety Information: DECTOMAX Injectable has a 35 day preslaughter withdrawal period. Do not use in dairy cows 20 months of age or older. DECTOMAX has been developed specifically for cattle and swine. Use in dogs may result in fatalities.

Maternal Edge Female Sales Gelbvieh Influenced Females - Working Hard for your Bottom Line www.Maternaledge.com
Gelbvieh influenced females attracted many of the most progressive commercial producers in the industry with the first Meat Animal Research Center germplasm study data in the early 1970s. Gelbvieh-sired females topped the charts on fertility, age at puberty and pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. The early data made a statement about the Gelbvieh influenced female. Today’s MARC data shows a female that has reduced her mature size—the only one of the breeds in the study to reduce mature size. This includes the British breeds in the study! The most recent MARC study showed Gelbvieh-sired calves with the lowest birth weights of the four major continental breeds—Simmental, Charolais, Limousin and Gelbvieh. Gelbvieh-sired calves also tied for the top survivability to weaning of all breeds. The beef industry focus changes from time to time, but the money in the cattle industry is still made in the cowherd. Today’s Gelbvieh genetics will make your cow herd work as hard as you do.
