PRESIDENT’S VIEW
Membership Engagement Drives Success The recent AGA Annual Convention and National Western Stock Show saw excellent member participation and increased number of head shown. Members also heard the presentation of the AGA strategic plan, which was met with enthusiasm towards future success. By Rob Arnold THE 2013 AMERICAN Gelbvieh Association Impacting the Beef Business Annual Convention and Gelbvieh activities at the National Western Stock Show were a huge success! Those who attended were rewarded with an educational and well-run convention and an outstanding display of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle. For me, every year when I go home from Denver, I start thinking about the upcoming year and looking forward to what comes next. I think about next year’s show string, what we can do at next year’s convention and what things we have to look forward to as an Association. I also think about my own herd goals – where am I going to find my next herd sire, what kind of herd sire do I need, and the list goes on – all before I even have this year’s calf crop on the ground. It makes me reflect on the choices I made last year and ponder if those choices still fit the direction I would like to be in the future. Did I make the right choices, and if not, what 6 | MARCH 2013

strategic plan will keep us focused, it will keep us engaged and it will help us ensure our success as an industry relevant breed. One of the things many of us enjoy while attending the convention and NWSS is looking at the impressive display of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle from across the country. Breeders brought their best to Denver this year and put on a tremendous show, for which they are to be commended. There were 19 pens exhibited in the yard, nearly double the number of the last few years. The hill show had 233 head
In my mind, the AGA Impacting the Beef Business long-range strategic plan is the glue and the road map that holds all of us together. It gives us direction! It has nothing to do with the percentage makeup of the cattle we choose While attending the committee meetings to breed, rather at convention, it was very rewarding to the attributes of watch our Association members embrace the animals and and discuss breed direction outlined in our the carcasses we strategic plan. are producing for the industry. While attending the committee meetings at convention, it was very rewarding to watch our Association members embrace and discuss breed direction outlined in our strategic plan. It tells me our membership is engaged in the success of our future and responsive to the needs of our industry. The board and staff are 100 percent dedicated to the success of this plan. One of my good friends from Minnesota told me, “I haven’t seen a one that I wouldn’t take home and call my own!” As we move forward with the coming year, we have a lot to look forward to and be positive about. Continued membership engagement in the long range strategic plan will be vital to the success of not only the plan itself, but more importantly the success of you as breeders and the breed and Association as a whole. Developing future leaders through the American Gelbvieh Junior Association is an opportunity which we need to continue to capitalize on. Support of the American Gelbvieh Foundation will help develop our young leaders. By Jim Gibb AS MOST OF you know, I’ve been away from active involvement in the Gelbvieh business for many years, so it’s been a real pleasure getting reacquainted with a number of long-time breeders and meeting new American Gelbvieh Association members. It’s been a special treat noting the large number of today’s Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders that were American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) leaders my first time around. This was on display at the 2013 AGA National Show, Sale and Annual Convention where several winners and high sellers were exhibited and consigned by former Gelbvieh Juniors. Moreover, three current AGA Board members and two current AGA staff persons came through the AGJA. And, just a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Gelbvieh Breeders of Iowa annual meeting and couldn’t help but note their youthful leadership. Yes, including former AGJA members that have now started their own Gelbvieh and Balancer herds.

NEWS ‘N NOTES Herd Assessments due March 15
Breeder’s Choice Bull Futurity Awards Scholarship
The March 15 deadline to complete your annual herd assessment is just a few weeks away. Completing the assessment online is the quickest and easiest way to submit your work. However, you can still request a paper copy from the AGA office if needed.
During the “Bulls in the Ballroom VIII,” the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Grace Hammer of Wallace, Kan. Grace was selected from several applicants vying for the scholarship.
Having all of your 2012 calves recorded first will make the process much easier. Once they're recorded you're ready to dispose of any open females. Additional tips and information can be found in the AGA Herd Assessment Update email sent from registration@ gelbvieh.org. As always, the AGA office staff is happy to answer any questions you may have.
Grace is the daughter of Lyle and Christy Hammer who are partners in Grund Beef Genetics. Grace is finishing her senior year of high school and will begin her college career next fall. Grace also serves as the vice president of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association.
AGA Customer Service Reminder When corresponding with AGA staff via email regarding account or registration questions, please be sure to include a member number for reference. This allows AGA staff to more quickly and efficiently answer your needs.
New Member Education Videos AGA members have a new resource available at their fingertips regarding the online registration process. The new Gelbvieh Tech YouTube channel offers several videos to answer common questions regarding the online registry. Learn how to use the "Quick Sire Picker" tool, register calves, print certificates, and what to do with twin or ET calves. More videos will be added throughout the year. If you have an idea for an educational video, please send it to Dana Stewart at danas@gelbvieh.org.

AGA Annual Convention
American Gelbvieh Association Inducts South Dakota Couple into Hall of Fame In the first father-son duo to the American Gelbvieh Association Hall of Fame, Jim and Barb Beastrom of Pierre, S.D., were the 31st inductees to receive this prestigious honor. JIM AND BARB Beastrom of Beastrom Gelbvieh Ranch in Pierre, S.D., were the 2013 inductees into the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Hall of Fame. The induction took place at the AGA Impacting the Beef Business Annual Convention held January 9-14, 2013 in Denver, Colo. Jim, with Barb and family by his side, has served the American Gelbvieh Association from the beginning of his introduction to Gelbvieh. Their breed promotion efforts and leadership service are difficult to match. The Beastrom Ranch’s legacy began in 1973. Choosing Gelbvieh for their growth, feed efficiency, maternal traits and gentle disposition, they also crossbred Angus and Red Angus with Gelbvieh for their Balancer® program. Whether in the show ring or the pasture, producing sound, quality cattle is their top priority. This year will mark their 33rd annual bull sale held at the ranch in February.
terms. He has also served on countless AGA committees and worked tirelessly with efforts to support the annual National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale. Jim’s service to South Dakota Gelbvieh Association includes time spent on their Board of Directors, organizing the state female sale and much more. Jim and Barb were instrumental in the success of the 2001 and 2006 Gelbvieh junior national shows held in South Dakota. “Their kind and encouraging words to Gelbvieh youth across the country have helped to spark enthusiasm for the breed,” states Janice Volek, current South Dakota Gelbvieh Association treasurer who echoes the “utmost respect and appreciation for the couple.” The Beastrom Ranch has produced many breedchanging genetics. One of their best known sires was a bull purchased in the 1970s. DGA Cowboy was a highly popular fullblood bull born in Canada. A quick search in the AGA herdbook lists countless Cowboy sons and daughters. Another early influencer bred by the Beastrom Ranch, BEA Polled Midnight, was a breed changer as a popular early black Gelbvieh sire. The two sires have a combined progeny count of more than 5,300 head. Search for American Gelbvieh on YouTube to watch a video honoring Jim and Barb Beastrom. FFF
The family run ranch consists of Jim and Barb, daughter Brandy and husband Shad Ludemann, and daughter Brittney and husband Wes Spencer, plus three grandchildren. The Beastrom Ranch is a diversified cattle and grain operation located four miles northeast of Pierre. Along with the cattle they raise wheat, corn, alfalfa and sunflowers, and offer guided pheasant hunts. E. Edd Pritchett, a founding member of the American Gelbvieh Association and past Hall of Fame inductee points out that “Jim has served the Association at a very critical time in history. Jim was partially responsible for purchasing the current AGA headquarters building.” And that “Barb was always there supporting the cause.” Throughout his involvement with Gelbvieh, Jim has served four three-year terms and is the only member to have served as the president of AGA on two separate

Missouri Couple Receives American Gelbvieh Association Member of the Year Long-time advisors to the American Gelbvieh Junior Association, Mike and Toni Shrewsbury of Lathrop, Mo., were recognized as the 2013 American Gelbvieh Association Member of the Year. MIKE AND TONI Shrewsbury of Lathrop, Mo., were the 2013 recipients of the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Member of the Year award. The award was presented at the AGA Impacting the Beef Business Annual Convention held January 9-14, 2013 in Denver, Co. Mike and Toni are well known for their commitment as volunteer advisors to the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. “That commitment has no doubt, and continues to positively impact the American Gelbvieh Association by their efforts to serve the future AGA membership and the high character and moral examples they set,” said Dana Stewart, AGA director of member services and junior programs staff advisor. “In their role as advisors, the Shrewsburys travel each year to the AGJA junior national show and AGJA board meetings. On site at these activities they both lend their guidance to AGJA members through their past experiences with the organization. Youth work can be challenging at times, but their calm, collected approach to challenges is always appreciated. In addition to the input they provide during meetings, they work long shifts to ensure that the day-to-day tasks of the nationl show are met,” Dana continued.
thus their Gelbvieh show career began. They expanded the cow herd using a breeding program alternating Angus and Gelbvieh sires to produce Gelbvieh-influenced females. At its peak, the cow herd became 200 head. Josh has taken the reins now producing Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls and females, marketed to commercial and seedstock producers. Mike is a past president of the Heart of America Gelbvieh Association. He has also served on the committee for the American Gelbvieh Foundation. Together, Mike and Toni have also served on multiple host-state planning committees for the annual junior national show, even as recently as 2012 when Missouri hosted the AGJA Black and Gold Classic. Mike and Toni exemplify the qualities of the AGA Member of the Year. The award is presented annually to an outstanding member who gives their time, talent and dedication to further the improvement of their state and national association. To watch a video honoring Mike and Toni as the 2013 AGA Member of the Year, search for American Gelbvieh on YouTube.
Members of the Heart of American Gelbvieh Association, Mike and Toni, with their son Josh Phillips raise Gelbveh and Balancer® cattle on their farm in northwest Missouri. They also have 1,500 acres of cropland where they grow corn and soybeans. The couple also has a daughter, Jessica Herbel, who lives with her husband Alex and their daughter, Elsie (1), in Liberty, Mo. They started raising Gelbvieh in 1990 when they purchased two purebred Gelbvieh bulls to use on their predominately black commercial british cow herd. When Josh was nine years old and wanted to show cattle, they selected a half-blood, black, polled heifer calf and 18 | MARCH 2013

Breed cattle on your schedule, instead of theirs. With Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Cattle Insert and LUTALYSE® (dinoprost tromethamine) Sterile Solution, it’s easy to tighten heat cycle timing. So you can breed groups of cattle in a narrow window. And FACTREL® (gonadorelin hydrochloride) Sterile Solution helps treat ovarian cysts to return cattle to estrus faster. All of which helps shorten the calving season so you get more nights of uninterrupted sleep.
Important Safety Information for LUTALYSE: As with all parenteral products, aseptic technique should be used to reduce the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. Do not administer in pregnant animals unless cessation of pregnancy is desired. Not for intravenous administration. Rippe Donation Heifer Sets Strong Pace for 2013 THANKS TO A donation from Rippe Gelbvieh, hardworking AGJA members and a countless number of supporters the annual American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) heifer raffle raised more than $12,000 for the AGJA. The 2013 donation heifer, DBRG MS 863U 2196Z, came the Rippe program. Duanne and Dustin Rippe of Hubbell, Neb., opened up their herd to select one of their best prospects to benefit the AGJA. Dustin, a former AGJA member and AGJA board member, is a proud product of the AGJA program. AGJA is continually thankful for their support. The heifer was cared for by another program with strong AGJA ties. The Hammer family, partners of Grund Beef Genetics in Wallace, Kan., provided care and fitting for the heifer in preparation for the National Western Stock Show. Grace Hammer is the current AGJA Vice President while mom, Christy, is also an AGJA alumnus. Special thanks go to this family for their hard work in getting the heifer ready.

GONADORELIN HYDROCHLORIDE For Injection For the treatment of cystic ovaries in cattle. CAUTION Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. DESCRIPTION FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) is a sterile solution containing 50 micrograms of synthetic gonadorelin (as hydrochloride) per mL in aqueous formulation containing 0.6% sodium chloride and 2% benzyl alcohol (as a preservative). Gonadorelin is the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) which is produced by the hypothalamus and causes the release of the gonadotropin luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary. FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) has the identical amino acid sequence as endogenous gonadorelin; 5-oxo Pro-His-Trp-Ser-TyrGly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH2 with identical physiological activities. The molecular weight of gonadorelin is 1182 with a molecular formula of C55H75N17O13. The corresponding values for gonadorelin hydrochloride are 1219 (1 HCI) expressed as C55H75N17O13HCI, or 1255 (2 HCI) expressed as C55H75N17O13 2HCI. MECHANISM OF ACTION Follicular cysts are enlarged non-ovulatory follicles resulting from a malfunction of the neuroendocrine mechanism controlling follicular maturation and ovulation. Exogenous administration of agents possessing luteinizing hormone (LH) activity, such as pituitary extracts or human chorionic gonadotropin, often causes ovulation or regression of follicular cysts. FACTREL induces release of endogenous luteinizing hormone (LH) to produce this same effect. No significant differences have been demonstrated in days from treatment to conception, frequency of cows conceiving at first or subsequent heats, or conception rates among treated or non-treated control animals. INDICATIONS FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) is indicated for the treatment of ovarian follicular cysts in cattle. The treatment effect of FACTREL when used in cattle with ovarian follicular cysts is a reduction in the number of days to first estrus. DOSAGE The recommended dosage of FACTREL is 100 mcg/ cow intramuscularly. RESIDUE WARNING Because FACTREL is identical to endogenous GnRH such that both are rapidly metabolized without detectable levels in milk or tissue, no withdrawal period is required. STORAGE CONDITIONS Store at refrigerator temperature 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F). SAFETY AND TOXICITY In cows the intramuscular administration of up to 25 times recommended dosage (2,500 mcg/day) of FACTREL for 3 days did not affect any physiological or clinical parameter. Likewise, single intramuscular doses of 5 times recommended dosage (500 mcg) did not interfere with pregnancy. No evidence of irritation at injection site was found in any animal. HOW SUPPLIED FACTREL (gonadorelin hydrochloride) solution 50 mcg/mL is available in 20 mL multidose vials (box of one). INDICatIONs aND INstRuCtIONs FOR use Cattle: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated as a luteolytic agent. LUTALYSE is effective only in those cattle having a corpus luteum, i.e., those which ovulated at least five days prior to treatment. Future reproductive performance of animals that are not cycling will be unaffected by injection of LUTALYSE. 1. For Intramuscular use for estrous synchronization in Beef Cattle and Non-Lactating Dairy Heifers. LUTALYSE is used to control the timing of estrus and ovulation in estrous cycling cattle that have a corpus luteum. Inject a dose of 5 mL LUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly either once or twice at a 10 to 12 day interval. With the single injection, cattle should be bred at the usual time relative to estrus. With the two injections, cattle can be bred after the second injection either at the usual time relative to detected estrus or at about 80 hours after the second injection of LUTALYSE. Estrus is expected to occur 1 to 5 days after injection if a corpus luteum was present. Cattle that do not become pregnant to breeding at estrus on days 1 to 5 after injection will be expected to return to estrus in about 18 to 24 days. 2. For Intramuscular use for unobserved (silent) estrus in Lactating Dairy Cows with a Corpus Luteum. Inject a dose of 5 mL LUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly. Breed cows as they are detected in estrus. If estrus has not been observed by 80 hours after injection, breed at 80 hours. If the cow returns to estrus breed at the usual time relative to estrus. Management Considerations: Many factors contribute to success and failure of reproduction management, and these factors are important also when time of breeding is to be regulated with LUTALYSE Sterile Solution. Some of these factors are: a. Cattle must be ready to breed — they must have a corpus luteum and be healthy; b. Nutritional status must be adequate as this has a direct effect on conception and the initiation of estrus in heifers or return of estrous cycles in cows following calving; c. Physical facilities must be adequate to allow cattle handling without being detrimental to the animal; d. Estrus must be detected accurately if timed Al is not employed; e. Semen of high fertility must be used; f. Semen must be inseminated properly. A successful breeding program can employ LUTALYSE effectively, but a poorly managed breeding program will continue to be poor when LUTALYSE is employed unless other management deficiencies are remedied first. Cattle expressing estrus following LUTALYSE are receptive to breeding by a bull. Using bulls to breed large numbers of cattle in heat following LUTALYSE will require proper management of bulls and cattle. 3. For Intramuscular use for treatment of Pyometra (chronic endometritis) in Cattle. Inject a dose of 5 mL LUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly. In studies conducted with LUTALYSE, pyometra was defined as presence of a corpus luteum in the ovary and uterine horns containing fluid but not a conceptus based on palpation per rectum. Return to normal was defined as evacuation of fluid and return of the uterine horn size to 40 mm or less based on palpation per rectum at 14 and 28 days. Most cattle that recovered in response to LUTALYSE recovered within 14 days after injection. After 14 days, recovery rate of treated cattle was no different than that of nontreated cattle. 4. For Intramuscular use for abortion of Feedlot and Other Non-Lactating Cattle. LUTALYSE is indicated for its abortifacient effect in feedlot and other non-lactating cattle during the first 100 days of gestation. Inject a dose of 25 mg intramuscularly. Cattle that abort will abort within 35 days of injection. Commercial cattle were palpated per rectum for pregnancy in six feedlots. The percent of pregnant cattle in each feedlot less than 100 days of gestation ranged between 26 and 84; 80% or more of the pregnant cattle were less than 150 days of gestation. The abortion rates following injection of LUTALYSE increased with increasing doses up to about 25 mg. As examples, the abortion rates, over 7 feedlots on the dose titration study, were 22%, 50%, 71%, 90% and 78% for cattle up to 100 days of gestation when injected IM with LUTALYSE doses of 0,1 (5 mg), 2 (10 mg), 4 (20 mg) and 8 (40 mg) mL, respectively. The statistical predicted relative abortion rate based on the dose titration data, was about 93% for the 5 mL (25 mg) LUTALYSE dose for cattle injected up to 100 days of gestation. swine: For intramuscular use for parturition induction in swine. LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated for parturition induction in swine when injected within 3 days of normal predicted farrowing. The response to treatment varies by individual animals with a mean interval from administration of 2 mL LUTALYSE (10 mg dinoprost) to parturition of approximately 30 hours. This can be employed to control the time of farrowing in sows and gilts in late gestation. Management Considerations: Several factors must be considered for the successful use of LUTALYSE Sterile Solution for parturition induction in swine. The product must be administered at a relatively specific time (treatment earlier than 3 days prior to normal predicted farrowing may result in increased piglet mortality). It is important that adequate records be maintained on (1) the average length of gestation period for the animals on a specific location, and (2) the breeding and projected farrowing dates for each animal. This information is essential to determine the appropriate time for administration of LUTALYSE. Mares: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated for its luteolytic effect in mares. This lutelytic effect can be utilized to control the timing of estrus in estrous cycling and clinically anestrous mares that have a corpus luteum in the following circumstances: 1. Controlling time of estrus of estrous Cycling Mares: Mares treated with LUTALYSE during diestrus (4 or more days after ovulation) will return to estrus within 2 to 4 days in most cases and ovulate 8 to 12 days after treatment. This procedure may be utilized as an aid to scheduling the use of stallions. 2. Difficult-to-Breed Mares: In extended diestrus there is failure to exhibit regular estrous cycles, which is different from true anestrus. Many mares described as anestrus during the breeding season have serum progesterone levels consistent with the presence of a functional corpus luteum. A proportion of “barren”, maiden, and lactating mares do not exhibit regular estrous cycles and may be in extended diestrus. Following abortion, early fetal death and re-sorption, or as a result of “pseudopregnancy,” there may be serum progesterone levels consistent with a functional corpus luteum. Treatment of such mares with LUTALYSE usually results in regression of the corpus luteum followed by estrus and/or ovulation. In one study with 122 Standardbred and Thoroughbred mares in clinical anestrus for an average of 58 days and treated during the breeding season, behavioral estrus was detected in 81 percent at an average time of 3.7 days after injection with 5 mg LUTALYSE; ovulation occurred an average of 7.0 days after treatment. Of those mares bred, 59% were pregnant following an average of 1.4 services during that estrus. Treatment of “anestrous” mares, which abort subsequent to 36 days of pregnancy, may not result in return to estrus due to presence of functional endometrial cups. useR saFety (HuMaN WaRNINGs) Not for human use. Women of childbearing age, asthmatics, and persons with bronchial and other respiratory problems should exercise extreme caution when handling this product. In the early stages, women may be unaware of their pregnancies. Dinoprost tromethamine is readily absorbed through the skin and can cause abortion. Accidental spillage on the skin should be washed off immediately with soap and water. ResIDue INFORMatION No milk discard or preslaughter drug withdrawal period is required for labeled uses in cattle. No preslaughter drug withdrawal period is required for labeled uses in swine. Use of this product in excess of the approved dose may result in drug residues. Not for horses intended for human consumption. aNIMaL saFety (WaRNINGs) Severe localized clostridial infections associated with injection of LUTALYSE have been reported. In rare instances, such infections have resulted in death. Aggressive antibiotic therapy should be employed at the first sign of infection at the injection site whether localized or diffuse. PReCautIONs • Do not administer intravenously (I.V.) as this route may potentiate adverse reactions. • No vial stopper should be entered more than 20 times. For this reason, the 100 mL bottle should only be used for cattle. The 30 mL bottle may be used for cattle, swine, or mares. • As with all parenteral products, careful aseptic techniques should be used to decrease the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. The vial stopper should be cleaned and disinfected prior to needle entry. Only sterile needles should be used and the same needle should not be used more than once. • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may inhibit prostaglandin synthesis; therefore this class of drugs should not be administered concurrently. Cattle: Do not administer to pregnant cattle, unless abortion is desired. Cattle administered a progestogen would be expected to have a reduced response to LUTALYSE Sterile Solution. swine: Do not administer to sows and/or gilts prior to 3 days of normal predicted farrowing as an increased number of stillbirths and postnatal mortality may result. Mares: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is ineffective when administered prior to day-5 after ovulation. Pregnancy status should be determined prior to treatment since LUTALYSE has been reported to induce abortion and parturition when sufficient doses were administered. Mares should not be treated if they suffer from either acute or subacute disorders of the vascular system, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, or reproductive tract. aDVeRse ReaCtIONs Cattle: Limited salivation has been reported in some instances. swine: The most frequently observed side effects were erythema and pruritus, slight incoordination, nesting behavior, itching, urination, defecation, abdominal muscle spasms, tail movements, hyperpnea or dyspnea, increased vocalization, salivation, and at the 100 mg (10X) dose only, possible vomiting. These side effects are transitory, lasting from 10 minutes to 3 hours, and were not detrimental to the health of the animal. Mares: The most frequently observed side effects are sweating and decreased rectal temperature. However, these have been transient in all cases observed and have not been detrimental to the animal. Other reactions seen have been increase in heart rate, increase in respiration rate, some abdominal discomfort, locomotor incoordination, and lying down. These effects are usually seen within 15 minutes of injection and disappear within one hour. Mares usually continue to eat during the period of expression of side effects. One anaphylactic reaction of several hundred mares treated with LUTALYSE Sterile Solution was reported but was not confirmed. NADA #108-901, Approved by FDA U.S. Patent No. 6,187,818

Cattle breeders now have access to the industry’s most powerful and comprehensive DNA profile, the GeneSeek® Genomic Profiler Bovine HDTM. This is 80,000 SNP panel takes DNA technology to the next level. GENESEEK®, A NEOGEN Corporation Company, announces the immediate availability of the next generation of DNA technology: the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler Bovine HDTM (GGP-HD), the most powerful and comprehensive profile available for cattle producers today. HD panel,” explains Dr. Dorian Garrick, Iowa State University Lush Chair in animal breeding and genetics and National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC) executive director. “The content of the GGP-HD is complementary to the GGP-LD, and the combined use of these two panels will improve the costeffectiveness of genomic prediction and genome-wide association studies, both for industry applications and for research.” Significant work in the development of the GGP-HD concentrated on providing beef breed associations with the most appropriate genetic markers for GE-EPDs, plus comprehensive parentage, disease and trait relevant SNPs – all for an affordable price. “Key elements that are important to individual breeds have been factored into the product,” says Dr. Bauck. “For example, the GGP-HD features hundreds of SNPs that enable the conversion from a SNP profile to microsatellite data for parentage determination from historic samples. The GGP-HD content has been specifically chosen so that it will be applicable to both purebred and crossbred cattle, making it an attractive
option for all breed associations and their members, including composite cattle such as Angus cross.”
“Key elements that are important to individual breeds have been factored into the product.” - Dr. Stewart Bauck The increase in accuracy of the EPD of a young sire from incorporating the GGP-HD is the equivalent to adding at least six progeny to a yearling bull for a moderately heritable trait such as marbling, explains Dr. Bauck. “Seedstock producers no longer have to wait until a bull is three years old before seeing a return on their investment. The GGP-HD allows producers to predict the true genetic potential of their bulls earlier and with more confidence to make faster genetic progress.” For more information about the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler Bovine HDTM, call (877) 443-6489 or visit www. neogen.com/GeneSeek. GPA PROGRAM GPA Applications due April 15 for 2012 Management Year THROUGH THE AMERICAN Gelbvieh Association’s Gelbvieh Performance Advantage (GPA) program, AGA members gain recognition for all the data collection they do throughout the year. More importantly, members are able to use the GPA program as a way to set their breeding program apart from others as they provide a value-added service to their customers with the data they collect. GPA applications for the 2012 management year are due on or before April 15. The application is pretty painless – simply requiring members to list the data they have collected during the last year. Members receive points for having growth and performance records, using AI, doing DNA testing, and using sires that excel in tenderness, carcass value, milk and scrotal circumference. The GPA program is unique within the seedstock industry. It provides a means for Gelbvieh breeders, both small and large, to promote the performance
aspects of their program. The GPA program has three recognition levels – bronze, silver, and gold – based on the total points received for the performance attributes of each program. From now through April 15, 2013, we will be accepting qualification forms for the fourth year of this program. Instructions and qualification forms can be found on the AGA website in the Membership/Member Programs section or can be obtained by requesting them from the AGA office. Qulifying members will be recognized in the July 2012 Herd Reference Edition of the Gelbvieh World. To receive recognition, qualification forms and worksheets should be filled out completely and any supporting documentation included. Multiple memberships that include animals that are managed together can be submitted on one application and will be recognized at the achieved level of those grouped memberships. FFF

CUP LIST Find a CUP Technician Near You COLLECTING CARCASS ULTRASOUND data on bulls and females continues to be a valuable tool for seedstock breeders. For bulls, it adds value to the seedstock you provide your customers and helps them make more informed bull buying decisions. On heifers, it helps the seedstock breeder make replacement heifer decisions. One change with the New Generation AGA EPDs is that bull %IMF data is now included in the national cattle evaluation process for the development of marbling EPDs. Previously, only heifer %IMF data was
included. With the release of the January 2013 EPDs, both bull and heifer %IMF ultrasound data was included in the calculation of marbling EPDs and will continue to be in the future, increasing the importance of conducting ultrasound scans on both bulls and females. Gelbvieh and Balancer速 breeders are encouraged to use a CUP (Certified Ultrasound Processing) Lab ultrasound technician. The AGA partners with CUP to process the ultrasound data for inclusion in EPD calculations. Below is the list of CUP technicians. For more information, visit www.cuplab.com.

Gelbvieh Bull Futurity
Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Wins Gelbvieh Bull Futurity PHG Rockin The Bakken Z17 won the 2013 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, Glasstone, N.D., had the winning entry. Golden Buckle Gelbvieh, Medina, N.D., won the drawing for the sale proceeds. By Jennifer Scharpe A RED BULL entry from Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, Gladstone, N.D., was named champion of the 16th Annual Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. The Gelbvieh bull futurity was held in conjunction with the 2013 American Gelbvieh Association Impacting the Beef Business Annual Convention and National Western Stock Show, January 9-14 in Denver, Colo. The winning bull was PHG Rockin The Bakken Z17. He is a February 23, 2012 son of COLB Mr. Xavier X82. He is red and homozygous polled, and offers outcross genetics not common to many Gelbvieh and Balancer® herds. Rockin The Bakken had seen showring success prior to being named futurity champion. He was the supreme overall breeds bull at the 2012 West River Livestock show, the largest Gelbvieh show in North Dakota, and stood second in his class to the reserve champion bull at the Canadian National show at Agribition in November. The champion Gelbvieh futurity bull automatically sells in the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Sale held at the National Western Stock Show. Rockin The Bakken was the second high selling lot in the sale, selling for $20,000. Buying possession of the bull was Chimney Butte Ranch, Mandan, N.D. Semen packages were purchased by Golden Buckle Gelbvieh, Medina, N.D., Twisted T Gelbvieh, Asquith, SK, Canada, Twin Bridge Farm, Lomond, AB, Canada and Wilkinson Gelbvieh, Model, Co. The bull futurity champion is selected during the “Bulls in the Ballroom” event. The top three vote getters from voting held earlier in the day are brought into the ballroom of the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Denver. The bulls are paraded for all to see and the futurity members complete their final round of voting. Runners-up in the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull 58 | MARCH 2013
PHG Rockin The Bakken Z17, bred by Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, Gladstone, N.D., won the 2013 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity.
Futurity were entered by Michael Rea, Berthoud, Colo., and Circle S Ranch, Canton, S.D. The Rea entry was RTRT Flat Iron 305Z, a January 20, 2012 black bull sired by CRAN Buddy Boy T729. The Circle S Ranch entry was CIRS Overdrive 2207Z, a February 16, 2012 red son of CIRS Decade 278U2. After the champion bull is named, a drawing is held for the sale proceeds. Golden Buckle Gelbvieh, Dwight and Christina Dockter and family, of Medina, N.D., won the $20,000 sale proceeds. Coincidentally, Prairie Hills Gelbvieh and Golden Buckle Gelbvieh shared their Gelbvieh bull futurity membership until this each, when Golden Buckle purchased their own individual membership. Mitchell Marketing Service manages the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity with the futurity Board of Directors. The American Gelbvieh Association thanks the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity for helping to sponsor the 2013 AGA “Impacting the Beef Business” awards recognition and futurity social held during the Association’s annual convention. HERD ASSESSMENTS Step-By-Step Guide to Herd Assessments The annual herd assessments (HAS) are the life-line of the American Gelbvieh Association. The $25 per cow fee that AGA members pay funds more than 40 programs and services for members and their commercial customers. Payment of the HAS fee includes one registration credit tied to the cow to be able to register a calf out of that cow for the current year. Herd assessments are due March 15. THE ANNUAL HAS process is a critical component of the total herd reporting (THR) system the AGA adopted in 2000. The purpose of THR is to establish
Step 1: Register 2012 Calves
Below is a step-by-step process for completing your annual HAS online. Currently, about 80 percent of the AGA membership has completed a user agreement, which grants access to the online animal registry. If you have not yet signed a user agreement and would like to do your herd assessments online, contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or info@gelbvieh.org to request an online user agreement.
Step 1 Quick Tip – To make next year’s HAS process quicker, register your 2013 calves either during or after the calving season, then this step will be completed. Also, at the end of the breeding season, enter breeding codes for each female by clicking on “Update”. Doing so will help you keep track of which females you will be expecting calves from for the next calving season. This data will also be used in the development of new maternal EPDs as part of the AGA long range strategic plan.
Go to My Herd>My Inventory, the header on the page will say “My Pre-Post Inventory 2013”. In the upper left hand box, change display year to 2012. This will then show you all the cows that were assessed in your 2012 inventory. Under the breeding code (Bcode) column, females should have either an “X” indicating a calf has been registered, or a reproductive status code. If this column is blank it means a calf or a reproductive status code is not entered for that female. Clicking on the Bcode header will sort that column to bring up all the females for which this column is blank.
Step 2: Dispose of Open Females The HAS fee is charged to all females, over 13 months of age, which are on your inventory. Paying an HAS or entering a disposal code is part of the total herd reporting process. Any female that will have a 2013 calf registered with the AGA will need to have a paid 2013
60 | MARCH 2013
a more complete database, thus enabling the AGA to make more accurate genetic predictions through EPDs and indexes for Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders. THR requires that all cows have a calf registered or a reproductive status code (RSC) reported annually in order for that cow to remain active in the AGA herdbook. The reporting of a RSC can be done through the online animal registry or on the paper version of the calf ’s registration application.
HAS. If you plan to sell females on your herd inventory, you must pay the HAS on these females prior to transferring to the new owner. To dispose of females, go to My Herd>My Inventory. Make sure the display year says 2013; the header should read “My Pre-Post Inventory 2013”. This simply means your HAS are not yet completed. To the right of the screen, click on “Dispose” for any animal you want to dispose of. This brings up another screen. In the “Disposal Codes” drop-down box, select the appropriate disposal code, then hit “Save.” That animal will no longer be in your inventory.
Step 2 Quick Tip – For any female of assessment age on your inventory as of January 1, 2013, you are responsible for paying the HAS to receive a 2013 calf registration credit. Do not dispose of females that are scheduled to be sold and do not use disposal code 6. If you dispose of a female in this section and later decide to transfer, the reactivation fee is two times the HAS rate.
Step 3: Paying HAS on Non-AMGV Females Any female registered with another breed association that you have previously paid an HAS fee on will also be listed under My Herd>My Inventory. You will be assessed for these females unless a disposal code is indicated. Please dispose of females that are no longer in your herd or are not scheduled to have a 2013 Balancer or hybrid calf.
Step 4: Posting Your Inventory Once you have verified all the females on your inventory list, simply click “Post” at the bottom of the My Herd>My Inventory screen, another screen pops up asking you to post again. To see the charges, go to My Account>My Billing. The charges for your HAS will be listed. Step 4 Quick Tip – HAS charges will be automatically charged to your credit card on file. If you prefer to use an alternative payment method (check, cashier’s check, or another credit card), call 303-465-2333 or email info@gelbvieh.org as soon as you click “Post” thus completing your HAS process. Be sure to include your member number in your communications. Your account will be placed on hold until HAS payment is received.
Step 5: AMGV Females Not of Assessment Age Females less than 13 months of age are not charged a HAS fee. Dispose of any females not retained as replacement females on the My Inventory>My Registered Females screen. Click on “View” located on the right hand side of each female. On the next screen, towards the bottom there is a drop-down box labeled “Disposal”. Select the appropriate disposal code and click “Save.”
Step 3 Quick Tip – If a non-AMGV female is bred to have a calf that will be recorded with another breed association, enter a disposal code of 50. You will not have to pay an HAS for this female, nor will you be charged to reinstate back to active status on January 1 of the following year. This does not apply to AMXX females. If a female from another breed association is not on your inventory, email the registration number to registration@gelbvieh.org and the female will be added.
Step 6: Bulls Bulls are not charged an HAS fee. If a bull has been sold, please complete the transfer process to the new owner. For other bulls no longer in your herd, please indicate a disposal code. The process is the same as in Step 5, only you go to the My Herd>My Registered Males screen.
The American Gelbvieh Association thanks all members for completing their herd assessments. Your continued commitment to the development and enhancement of the Association and the breed is greatly appreciated. Should you have any questions regarding the HAS process, please contact the registration department at the AGA office at 303465-2333 or registration@gelbvieh.org.
Step 5 Quick Tip – Disposing of heifers in your inventory at the end of the breeding season will make the next year’s herd assessment process simpler. This data will also be useful in the development of maternal EPDs.

PAGE IDPROMOTION MINUTE BREED
Impacting the Beef Business - Breed Promotion “Celebrate our strengths while we improve our weaknesses.” The breed promotion efforts for this year will have a reach of over 4.79 million impressions. These efforts are targeted towards achieving the breed promotion goals outlined in the AGA strategic plan. By Frank Padilla THE 2013 AMERICAN Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention served as a vehicle to present the recently finalized long-range strategic plan developed by membership, AGA Board of Directors, industry experts and AGA staff. It serves as the guide in assuring industry relevance and strong commercial acceptance in the cow-calf, feedlot and packer sectors of the beef industry for the Gelbvieh breed. The strategic plan considered four informational sources: 1) the American Gelbvieh Association business and genetic trends; 2) beef business trends; 3) membership survey; and 4) Board of Directors and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis. The long-range strategic plan, “Impacting the Beef Business,” thanks to membership involvement and participation, will guide the American Gelbvieh Association and members for the next three to five years. Breed promotion is a priority and was stated as such by those submitting member surveys conducted as part of the development of the long range plan. The emphasis stated most often was to promote the merits of Gelbvieh, Balancer® and crossbreeding. The goal is to increase promotional reach by 5 percent per year for the next three years to the cow-calf and feedlot sectors. Concerning seedstock breeder promotion it was determined that two areas were to be targeted. A goal is to increase total AGA members by 2 percent annually for the next three years. As well, to increase transfer rate to 45 percent of the animals registered by the fall of 2015. 62 | MARCH 2013
The strategy to accomplish the goals under breed promotion was presented during the marketing and member education committee meeting at the Annual Convention. The total promotion reach for the upcoming 2012-2013 is projected as follows, based on the trends of the past three years, the breed promotion strategies already in place and expected outcome of those strategies: • • • • • • • • • • • •

The report also includes a listing of the more than 140 articles printed in Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture during the 2012 calendar year. This list is broken down by subject area and is great resource for all breeders. I want to thank the exhibitors and consignors as well sale management that made for a very successful National Show, Pen Show and Sale. As well, I want to thank the AGJA members who brought cattle to the 2013 National Western. These events place Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle on a national stage. Many compliments were given as to the quality of the cattle and enthusiasm of those in attendance. My hat is off to all of you for a job well done. FFF

Tight Race for Ring of Gold Champions There was a tight race this year for the 20122013 American Gelbvieh Association Gelbvieh and Balancer速 Ring of Gold awards. Ring of Gold awards are presented to the top Gelbvieh female, Gelbvieh bull, Balancer female and Balancer bull based on points awarded throughout the year. Animals must earn points in at least two shows to qualify for Ring of Gold awards. The show year begins with the Dixie National in February and concludes with the National Western Stock Show in January.
64 | MARCH 2013
The American Gelbvieh Association established the Ring of Gold program to encourage breeders to participate in livestock shows and to honor the top animals shown at the conclusion of a show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve champions, as well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown. The following is a list of the top three animals in each Ring of Gold division who qualify for the recognition by winning points in at least two shows.

New Generation AGA EPDs Guide to the American Gelbvieh Association Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) can be used to predict the average performance of a bull’s offspring compared to other calves in their contemporary group (a contemporary group being calves that were born in the same calving season, in the same year, herd, sex, and were managed similarly). EPDs are measured in the units of the trait, and show the differences in performance between animals. For example, if a bull has a weaning weight EPD of 80, and another bull in the same herd has a weaning weight EPD of 70, then bull A’s calves would be expected to be 10 pounds heavier at weaning than those of bull B.
Accuracy In an EPD listing, an accuracy number is often published below its corresponding EPD. Accuracy is defined as the strength of the relationship between a prediction (EPD) and a sire’s true genetic value. In other words, accuracy is an indicator of the reliability of an EPD. Accuracy is improved by the number of records reported for an animal. For example, a three year old bull with 90 calves would have EPDs of higher accuracy than a virgin yearling bull. Accuracies range from zero to one, with numbers closer to one being more accurate.
It is important to remember that this number is just a prediction of performance. Actual performance depends on many factors such as environment, management, etc. This being said, an EPD is by far the most reliable indicator of an animal’s genetic merit due to the amount of information incorporated into the calculation. The American Gelbvieh Association uses all available information to predict an animal’s EPD. This information includes: individual performance, pedigree, progeny performance and grand progeny performance. All this information is combined into one easy to use number that helps breeders make genetic improvement in their herd.

EPD Definitions Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units they are published in. Calving Ease Direct (CE): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd. Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD Calving Ease Daughters (CED): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which heifers have a genetic pre-disposition to calve on their own. Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
Yield Grade (YG): Differences in Yield Grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Higher values suggest that progeny will have a lower ratio of lean to fat. Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass Quality Grades. Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to Yield Grade.
What is an Index? Indexes are tools that allow you to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant. Carcass Value (CV): Expressed in dollar value per head, compares progeny of on animal to another in dollar difference when progeny are sold on a grid. This is a true economic comparison. Projected carcass weight, penalties for carcass weights that are too heavy or too light, Quality Grade and Yield Grade premiums and discounts are all included in calculating this dollar value index. Feedlot Merit (FM): Measures the dollar value associated with the expected gain and feedlot efficiency of progeny when fed in a typical feedlot environment.

COMMUNICATION NOTE Driving Sales With the multiple numbers of sales this sale season, stand out from the competition by utilizing four simple services. By Jennifer Scharpe THERE ARE MORE than 60 Gelbvieh and Balancer® sales scheduled from January through April. Thirty-three of which will be held during the month of March. Be sure you are reaching your customers by taking advantage of the sales marketing services offered through the American Gelbvieh Association and Gelbvieh Media Productions. Help your costumers find your sale catalog by posting it on the American Gelbvieh Association’s sale catalog listings at www. GELBVIEH.org. Posting a sale catalog is a free service to breeders who advertise their sale with a display ad in Gelbvieh World or The Profit Picture. The sale catalog listings page is the top viewed page, after the homepage, on the Gelbvieh website during sale season. This page receives over 500 views a day. To post your sale catalog, send a PDF of the catalog or a link to the online catalog location to Dana Stewart, AGA director of member services, at danas@gelbvieh.org. GELBVIEH SALES email marketing will celebrate its first anniversary in early March. This service was started as a way to help AGA members promote their genetics to other seedstock breeders through a cost efficient email service. Breeders who have sent an email blast through GELBVIEH SALES continue to report the high response rate they get, the interest the email blast has 80 | MARCH 2013
generated and how successful it has been at increasing sales. For what is essentially the cost of one bid, the return back to the breeder has been huge. Only one email blast is sent per day so reserve your date early. After the sale, when you’ve celebrated your successful sale, sit down and figure your sale averages and write your sale report. Sale reports are the bonus free promotion you get for your hard work in having a sale. You can either write the report yourself and send it to jennifers@gelbvieh.org or use the simple Online Sale Report Form, which can be found on the homepage at www.GELBVIEH.org. A wise man from Missouri, who was one of the leading seedstock swine producers in the country and is now retired, once told me, “The best thing a seedstock producer can do is thank their customers with an ad in the magazine. It tells their customers that their business is appreciated. The ads promoting the sale are needed, but the thank you ad after the sale is the most important.” These words apply to all livestock species; the concepts of successful marketing are the same. A thank you ad after the sale should be figured into your sale advertising expense or a part of your yearly marketing plan. Also be sure to complete those animal transfers so you customers can receive a free one-year subscription to Gelbvieh World and The Profit Picture. FFF

MEMBER
Be a Champion for the American Gelbvieh Foundation With passion, determination and hard work, Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders can help build the American Gelbvieh Foundation. The Foundation is a critical source of funding for research and junior support. By Dana Stewart THE MARCH ISSUE of Gelbvieh World is dedicated to the champions of the national Gelbvieh and Balancer show. For those champions, it started with great genetics. But those genetics had passion, determination and hard work driving them. And just like those winners, the American Gelbvieh Foundation needs passion, determination and hard work to become a champion. Passion. The American Gelbvieh Association was built on passion. Commercial cattlemen who grew to love Gelbvieh put their passion in motion by working to establish the American Gelbvieh Association. People who saw what the breed could do bred up their herds to purebred animals because they knew they had to in order for Gelbvieh to grow and succeed. The Foundation needs that same passion. It needs AGA members who believe in the breed to give their support. That support funds research projects to prove what those passionate cattlemen have known all along, as well as to launch Gelbvieh to the forefront of innovative technology. Determination. Ranchers have always been determined. Drought, blizzards, high input costs, regulations and more haven’t stopped the American rancher. We do what we do because we love it. We believe in it and it’s in our blood. The Foundation
84 | MARCH 2013
needs determined supporters who give their support in good times and bad. Hard work. It gets things done. While not always easy, that hard work pays off. The Foundation needs hard working supporters - supporters who share with their state association and other AGA members about the benefits and projects of the Foundation. There are countless ways to become a Foundation champion and not all of them require a great financial sacrifice. The beauty of the Foundation is that you can give as much or little as you can afford. Consider giving a small reoccurring gift monthly, quarterly or annually at an amount that you feel comfortable with. AGA can even help set up a payment plan for you. Other gifts might be the proceeds of a cull cow or a percentage of a lot from your production sale. The Foundation accepts non-monetary gifts as well. If you’d like to be a champion for the Foundation, please contact the AGA office. We can discuss Foundation projects and giving options. Finally, behind all of the great winners in this issue is excitement. Imagine all the things we can accomplish by channeling that excitement to stand behind the American Gelbvieh Foundation. Be a Foundation champion. Let’s get excited! Let’s stand proudly behind the breed we champion for. Let’s make a statement with our support to the Foundation.
American Gelbvieh Foundation Funds Genome Sequencing Project AT THE RECENT American Gelbvieh Foundation Committee meeting, the committee voted to recommend to the AGA Board of Directors to use Foundation funds to enter a research project with the University of Missouri. The research project involves doing an entire genome sequence on ten highly influential Gelbvieh bulls. Not only will Gelbvieh be
among the first breeds to accomplish this task, but in the end the research will provide an increase in the accuracy of molecular breeding values (MBVs) that are currently examined on the 50K SNP DNA test used by AGA members. The AGA Board of Directors voted to proceed with the research project. Research will begin this spring.
Giving Today to Guarantee Tomorrow: The American Gelbvieh Foundation Life Insurance Option DID YOU KNOW that you can leave a gift to the American Gelbvieh Foundation through your life insurance plan? During the American Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention and meetings, AGA members had an opportunity to learn about this option of charitable giving. The gift of life insurance can represent a substantial future gift at a relatively low cost.
premiums. Irrevocable gifts are not subject to the federal gift tax. Further, if the Foundation is named as the policy owner and beneficiary the gift will not be included in your estate for federal estate tax purposes.
If an AGA member has an existing life insurance policy, they can make the Foundation the beneficiary or they may simply purchase a new life insurance policy.
There are several options to giving a charitable gift to the Foundation through life insurance. In addition, laws and regulations may vary by state. However, the premise is the same – leaving a life insurance gift to the Foundation is a simple way to leave a substantial gift with a relatively low cost to the donor.
There are income tax benefits to the policy holder associated with this type of gift. Depending on how the policy is set up, some of those benefits might include deducting the value of the policy at the time of the gift or charitable income tax deductions for policy
If you would like more information about life insurance gifts, please contact Dana Stewart, American Gelbvieh Foundation staff liaison, at 303-465-2333. We can work together with your local provider to meet your wishes.
Jimmy Christopher Memorial Scholarship Winner Announced AMERICAN GELBVIEH JUNIOR Association member Amanda Morrow of Hanson, Ky., was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Jimmy Christopher Memorial Scholarship fund. She is the 17 year old daughter of John and Paul Morrow. Upon graduation from Madisonville North Hopkins High School this spring, Morrow plans to attend Murray State University this fall. Jimmy Christopher was the longtime herdsman at Gelbvieh Bar None Ranch in North Carolina. His greatest joy was getting a young person started in the Gelbvieh business. The memorial scholarship is
annually awarded to an AGJA member who resides east of the Mississippi river. For more information, please contact Dana Stewart at 303-465-2333 or at danas@gelbvieh.org. The Jimmy Christopher Memorial Scholarship fund is one of several scholarship funds managed through the American Gelbvieh Foundation. In addition to the Jimmy Christopher Memorial Scholarship, the American Gelbvieh Foundation awards up to $4,500 in scholarships at the annual American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic. These scholarship funds are managed through various scholarship funds.

SIRE/DAM SELECTOR Finding the Correct Genetics for Your Herd The sire/dam selector can be found by clicking on the Animal and Member Search Quick Link at www.GELBVIEH. org. This tool allows you to perform a customized search for sires and dams that meet the breeding goals for your herd. By Kari Otteman
The Basics When you reach the sire selector home page, you will find a page that lists the current AGA EPD categories, with columns for lower and upper limits, along with a minimum accuracy column. You can select the sex of the animal you are searching for: sires, dams, or AI sires only. Other factors that can be included in your search are the age of the animal, their breed composition, horned vs. polled, and their coat color. These choices enable you to find the animal that will be the best genetic match for your herd. The sire/dam selector also lets you search for dams based on their “Award” distinction, either as a Dam of Merit or a Dam of Distinction. The sire/dam selector lets you organize your results by enabling you to choose the number of results you want reported in your search. It also lets you sort your results based on your search fields; for example, sorting sires from highest to lowest birth weight.
Sire Selector Example How do you go about finding an animal that will work the best with your current production herd? The answer depends largely on the breeding goals for your operation. Here are the basic steps to choose a sire for your herd: • Let’s say you are looking for a bull that will improve the carcass value in your herd, and also has a reasonable weaning weight EPD because you sell your calves at weaning. The amount of help you have available during calving is slim, so you also want to make sure that the bull has good calving ease numbers. • You also want the bull to be a red, polled, purebred bull to mate with commercial cows. 86 | MARCH 2013
• Based on your breeding goals, and on the published AGA EPD percentiles, you decide that you want your bull to be in the top 25% for calving ease, which means you enter a lower limit of 10 in the calving ease row. You also want your bull’s weaning weight EPD to be about breed average, which means you enter a 65 in the lower limit box for weaning weight. Finally, you know that to make improvements in carcass merit for your herd, you want your CV to be in the top 20%. This means that you enter a 15 as the lower limit for carcass value. • Accuracy is also an important factor in choosing a sire. You decide you want your sire to be a proven one for less risk, so you set the minimum accuracy on all your EPDs to be 0.45 or above. • You are looking for a bull, so you check the “Sire” box. You select “Purebred” in the “Herdbook” field. To make sure the bull is without horns, you select “Polled” in the “Horn Code” field. Select “Black” in the “Color” field. • You want to see the top 50 results for your search, so you select this in the “# Of results” field. Don’t forget that if you want to sort the results in any particular fashion, say, in order of descending carcass value, you can do that in the “Order Results By” field. • You are ready to look at your results! Click the “Search” button, and you will see the results. • You can look at any individual animal’s records by clicking on the registration number of that animal. • What if your search didn’t return exactly what you wanted? No problem, just click “Clear” and try again. If you have any questions during your search, you can get help by clicking the “?” button at the bottom of the screen, or by calling the office at 303-465-2333. We are always willing to answer any questions you might have. FFF
JUNIOR VOICE
Ride the Denver Excitement to Summer Shows for preparing her for the NWSS and caring for her during the week.
With the successful completion of all the NWSS activities, AGJA members can now look to the excitement of the summer show season. Check the Gelbvieh website often for updates on AGJA shows. By Justin Vehige
We are now full-swing into the second semester of school, and if you’re like me, the itch to start the summer show season is setting in. As the school year winds down it can be difficult to stay focused on school work when I’d rather be out working with show heifers.
WHAT A GREAT AGA Annual Convention and National Western Stock Show. I am still buzzing from the excitement of that week. It was a pleasure to see a great turn out of junior members in Denver. The annual American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) donation heifer raffle was a huge success, generating more than $12,000 for junior programs. Thank to everyone who supported the AGJA by purchasing a raffle ticket either individually or through the raffle ticket auction. Also, congratulations and thanks to all the junior members who sold tickets. We would be remise if we did not extent a huge thank you to Rippe Gelbvieh, Hubbell, Neb., for donating this year’s heifer. Dustin Rippe opened up his herd and let AGAJ President Dustin Aherin and AGJA Ex-Officio Cole Buffo to pick the heifer of their choice as the donation heifer. Thank you also to the Hammer family
Preparations are well underway for this summer’s AGJA sponsored shows. The Western Regional show will be held May 24-26 in Columbus, Kan. The Eastern Regional show will be held June 7-9 in Waynesville, N.C. And the highlight of the summer, the AGJA Northern Lights Classic will be June 30 through July 5 in Rochester, Minn. The Minnesota Junior Gelbvieh Association is excited to welcome everyone to Minnesota. Be prepared to expand your vocabulary with words and lines like hotdish, pop, come here once, uffdah, up nort, and yah sure you betcha, not that I know what any of those mean. Thank you to everyone who supported the fundraising efforts for the Northern Lights Classic by purchasing tickets for their heifer raffle. More information about this summer’s shows, as well as contest information, will be posted on the Junior Page of the Gelbvieh website at www.GELBVIEH.org. We can ride the excitement from the successful National Western Stock Show to the upcoming AGJA shows. FFF
