VIEW FROM THE BOARD
THE GREATEST TIME OF THE YEAR by Klint Sickler, AGA President
I
f you’re involved in the cattle business, this is the greatest time of the year. That may be an unexpected statement from someone who lives in the Great White North, where the average temperature this time of year is colder than a deep freeze, but this is the season where we get to see all of the results of our decisions over the past year. Spring is the intersection of what is and what will be; where calves are arriving from last year’s herd sires, while we head full speed into bull sale season where marketing and purchasing decisions are on our mind. On one hand, we have the excitement to finally see how the new genetics we have added to our herd will sync with the mating decisions we have made. Will that new calving ease sire that you
added live up to the hype, or is it time to make another pot of coffee? Was that hot new AI sire the ‘real deal,’ or do we try a different direction next year? If you’re like me, every calf that hits the ground is full of possibility and potential waiting to be tapped. On the other hand, we get to see how the mating decisions we made in the past carry forward. First calf heifers are entering the herd and showing their maternal capabilities. These heifers are a result of mating decisions made three years ago. In our herd, and many others, many of the cows that are calving this spring are the result of decisions made 10 years or more in the past. On top of all of this, those of us who are in the middle of bull sale season are working hard to market our bulls born
at this time last year. That 2021 model calf is now grown, developing into the next herd sire for someone, and the same questions and future matings are being contemplated. For the breeder, mating decisions from last year will determine the financial future of the ranch. While this is just a short overview, the message is the same whether you’re a seedstock or commercial producer – never underestimate the impact today’s genetic decisions will make on the future of your cowherd. While you’re waiting for that heifer to calve, flip through another catalog, research a few more pedigrees and start getting eager for next year’s calf crop – because that’s what makes this business exciting and keeps us coming back year after year. 2022 Market Outlook FEATURE BY LAURA HANDKE
10 | GELBVIEH WORLD
2
C
attleFax senior market analyst Kevin Good wrapped up the company’s annual outlook session at the 2022 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in Houston, Texas, with a message of excitement and positivity. “It’s an exciting time in our business. We are in the midst of seeing prices go into a higher level, and as we have watched cattle numbers decline over the last 40 or 50 years, the fact is, we are doing more with less, and that is really a good story,” he told attendees. In the five-year span between 2014 and 2018, the U.S. cowherd added more than six million head, only to see those numbers fall by three million head from 2019 through 2021, with another year of drought-forced liquidation on the horizon in 2022. The positive to come out of those numbers is the sustainability the industry has found and continues to find through genetics and production efficiencies. Increased quality in U.S. beef is also bolstering market share through stronger consumer demand. “Around 60% of the increase we’ve seen over the past 15 years has been at the top two-thirds. Choice and prime have seen the most increase. That’s genetic progress,” Good said. Unfortunately, the elephant in the room was back for the 2022 outlook. Drought conditions continue to worsen with two-thirds of the cowherd in drought conditions, a pattern producers hoped would be broken with the emergence of an El Niño cycle. Matt Makens, Makens Weather, dashed those hopes with an update that shared two possible scenarios as we move into spring: a lingering El Niña or, more positive, a shift to a neutral weather pattern.
FINDING LEVERAGE Good spent a considerable amount of time discussing leverage and what U.S. producers need to better capture it.
How do we get more of these record dollars from the retail side to trickle back?” he asked. “We have to start thinking about it from a cycle standpoint. We will continue to see elevated cow slaughter in 2022, and we also have to remember that we have 38%-plus of our heifers on feed.” Also updated in late January was the USDA cowherd report, with lowered numbers for the past two years to reflect the ongoing liquidation, which also made better sense of the number of cattle on feed. “Calf prices are going to be good enough to expand (in 2022), but you have to have green grass to get that accomplished,” Good said about the reality of continued cow number liquidation, noting the trends seen in the last herd peak in 2005-2006. “The last cycle peak was very small in ‘05-‘06, during that time frame, prices between 2010-2013 were profitable, the problem was that we were in a longterm drought cycle, and because of that, we continued to liquidate the herd for additional years,” he said. “It’s important to keep that in mind. We have to see this drought subside.” Liquidation was also strong throughout the dairy herd, due to increased feed prices and lower milk prices, with around three million head of the total 90 million dairy cowherd entering the production system in 2021 – a number Good says he and his team expect to see increase going forward. In 2021, the U.S. brought in 300,000 fewer head of fed cattle from Mexico, and a sustained smaller Canadian beef cowherd paired with the drought conditions much of the northern U.S. saw in 2021, helped to move 100,000 feeder cattle north into Canada, as well. At home, the U.S. began the year with record slaughter numbers, with a strong supply also on feed in the same period, driven largely by drought conditions.
“We think that we’ve used a lot of the cattle that would’ve came in the months of March, April and May,” Good said. “We’ve continued to pull feeder cattle forward and we ended up placing a lot of them in the fourth quarter of 2021. Outside of the feedyards, we’re looking at a supply that is down 700,000 head, which leads us to anticipate tighter placed feeder sales as we go through March, April, May and June, which is going to lead to tighter slaughter supplies to finish up the year.” Good noted that a drop in the fourth quarter is a very rare occurrence, but the trend follows a liquidation pattern. He added that tighter supplies in both fed and non-fed cattle, combined with lighter weights will position 2022 to see a net production level of about 2.5% less than 2021. Compounding supply challenges and driving price, the export markets will continue to play a significant role in 2022, coming off of a record 18% year in 2021. Additionally, pork and poultry supplies have plateaued over the past couple of years, driven largely by higher prices and increased regulations. To expand, both sectors will need to build new brick and mortar facilities, an expansion that will take time. The message Good shared with attendees was that for the next year, at minimum, more likely the next three to five, the beef sector won’t see strong competition from other livestock protein. To close, Good offered a positive price outlook for 2022. “An old rule of thumb, all things being consistent as far as demand and leverage, suggests that tight supplies should drive the market substantially higher. An old rule of thumb says that a one pound change sees a $10 per hundred weight increase from a live standpoint,” he said. F

he 2022 People’s Choice Balancer® Futurity and Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Futurity Scholarships were awarded at the 2022 National Gelbvieh and Balancer Show, held in conjunction with the second annual Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Each scholarship provides the winning recipient with $1,000 for the continuation of their education in the field of their choice. Criteria for both scholarship opportunities include active membership within the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) and active enrollment as a high school senior or college student who has not yet turned 22 as of January 1, 2022. Scholarship funds may be used for twoyear, four-year and technical education institutions. The 2022 People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity scholarship recipient is Jaycie Forbes of De Smet, South Dakota. Jaycie is the daughter of Troy and Pam Forbes and is currently a freshman at South Dakota State University, pursuing a dual major in agricultural communications and animal science. Graduating from Willow Lake High School in May 2021 with a cumulative GPA of 3.89, Jaycie was actively involved in volleyball, basketball, track, yearbook, FFA and graduated 8th in her class. Through 4-H, Forbes could be found volunteering in her local community, exhibiting both cattle and sheep, as well as competing at the state level with her livestock projects. “The Gelbvieh breed has blessed me with countless opportunities. I have traveled the country to various shows,
26 | GELBVIEH WORLD
made many memories both in and out of the showring, and found friends who have turned into family,” Jaycie says. “For all of that, I am thankful to be a part of breed that has both people and great cattle.” A ten-year member of AGJA, Jaycie has earned several grand champions, division champions, top 10 contest awards and multiple showmanship awards over the years. More recently, Jaycie has advocated for the beef industry to legislators in South Dakota about funding a 20-million-dollar facility for their state fair grounds. Serving as a director on the AGJA board of directors, Jaycie looks forward to leading by example and providing past, present and future members of the AGJA with an avenue to promote the Gelbvieh breed to the next generation of beef industry leaders. Molly McClure, daughter of Ben and Lelane McClure, of Hugoton, Kansas, was selected as the recipient of the 2022 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Scholarship. Molly currently attends Kansas State University, where she is a freshman majoring in agricultural education with a minor in animal science. Prior to graduating from Hugoton High School in 2021, Molly was a member of National Honor Society, held a 4.0 GPA, and was active in FFA, participating at the local, regional and state levels. During her time in FFA, Molly was a national proficiency award finalist, state proficiency award winner and recipient of many chapter, state and district honors.
In addition to her high school activities and service, Molly was also actively involved in 4-H and has served as her club’s president, county 4-H council president and vice president. Molly was the recipient of the Kansas Key Award, one of the highest honors awarded to 4-H members across Kansas. Molly enjoys giving back to her community and educating others about the agricultural industry through tangible experiences. “Spreading my passion for agriculture and making an impact on my students is important to me,” Molly says. “In addition to my career as an agricultural educator, I plan to continue to grow my herd and stay active in the American Gelbvieh Association.” Molly is a seven-year member of AGJA and has shown exemplary promise and dedication to the Gelbvieh breed, participating in events such as the AGA National Shows, annual Junior Classic, AGJA regional shows and several contests over the years. Congratulations to both of the 2022 Bull Futurity Scholarship recipients. If you know of an AGJA member who meets the application criteria, we encourage you to share the opportunities provided through the AGJA, American Gelbvieh Foundation, Bull Futurities and several memorials. Please contact Jake Renner, AGA member and youth activities coordinator, at jake@gelbvieh.org with any questions. F
& BALANCER® SHOW 2022 RING OF GOLD CHAMPIONS NAMED BY JAKE W. RENNER, M.S.
T
hroughout the 2021-2022 show year, Gelbvieh and Balancer® females and bulls competed at shows across the country to earn points for the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Ring of Gold program. Each year, the qualifying animals are ranked at the conclusion of the National Gelbvieh and Balancer Show held in January. This year, a total of four shows were included in the Ring of Gold tally. The AGA established the Ring of Gold program to honor the top animals
shown at the conclusion of the show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve grand champions, as well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown at each show per division. To honor those animals who have risen to the top during the show season, the Ring of Gold awards are presented to the top Gelbvieh female, Gelbvieh bull, Balancer female and Balancer bull based on points awarded throughout
the year. Animals must earn points in at least two shows to qualify for Ring of Gold points each year. Junior shows are not calculated into the total number of entries for the Ring of Gold tabulations. The 2021-2022 Ring of Gold qualified shows were: Iowa State Fair, Missouri State Fair, American Royal and the Cattlemen’s Congress. Below are this year’s champions in each Ring of Gold division. F

If there are associated herds linked to one account, all accounts must be up-todate. The herd assessment rate is $25 for females over 13 months of age. This yearly fee allows members to register calves, transfer ownership and report additional data. One herd assessment credit equals one calf registration: Registrations for natural born multiples (twins) can be completed at no additional charge. In order to register additional embryo transfer (ET) calves, a $25 fee for each ET calf will be applied, if the recipeient dam does not have a herd assessment credit. If embryos have been sold to other members, the embryos must be transferred into the new owners embryo inventory to avoid registration problems.
Heifer exposure data required: Complete exposure data for all heifers that are expected to have their first calf in 2022. Check “PE,” which stands for pasture exposed, “AI” if they were artificially inseminated or “No” if they were not exposed. This data will be used to strengthen the AGA’s heifer pregnancy EPD. Simply recording exposure and calving data can easily track heifer fertility throughout the AGA registry. Inactive cows can be re-activated: If a cow has been previously disposed of on a member’s inventory, the animal can be reactivated. In order to do so, the member will be charged $25 for every year the cow has remained inactive. For example, if the female was dropped from the herd in 2020, the member will pay $25 for each year (2020, 2021 and 2022) in order to register a 2022-born calf. Please contact the AGA office to reactivate cows. Assessing non-Gelbvieh or Balancer® females who will produce Gelbviehinfluenced calves: To enroll a bull or female from another breed association, email the registration number from the breed of origin to the office at registry@gelbvieh.org. Please include whether or not you are the owner of that particular animal. To use this bull
or female in the AGA registry, use the original registration number with the corresponding international breed code. A few commonly used breeds include: •
American Angus = AMAN
•
Red Angus = AMAR
•
Canadian Gelbvieh = CDGV
•
Simmental = AMSM
•
Limousin = AMLM
•
Hereford = AMHH (Horned or Polled)
Late fees do apply to herd assessments: If herd assessments aren’t complete by March 15, 2022, the following penalty fees will be applied to the account: •
1-30 days late = 5% late penalty = $26.25 per female
•
31-60 days late = 10% late penalty = $27.50 per female
•
61+ days late = 15% late penalty = $28.75 per female
A full herd assessment how-to guide can be found on the Tutorials and Training page under the Registry tab at Gelbvieh. org. For further questions, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email registry@gelbvieh.org. F

JUNIOR CONNECTION
GELBVIEH FAMILY REUNION by Jaycie Forbes
D
ecember 29 was a frigid -15 degrees in South Dakota, less than tropical conditions to tie up loose ends before heading for Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. At four o’clock the next morning, we headed south, happy to be headed for warmer weather, the opportunity to see our Gelbvieh family and check out what we knew would be exceptionally good cattle. Our expectations were met, and I would like to congratulate everyone who brought cattle and exhibited at this year’s national show. As breeders, we should be proud of the quality of livestock that we continue to produce and exhibit. I heard it said that the quality of livestock in this year’s show was second to none, and I couldn’t agree more. From the junior and open shows to the bull futurities and pen shows, it is obvious our breed has a lot of momentum going forward. New this year was the Gelbvieh on Ice Sale, held during the futurity social. Breeders offered Gelbvieh and Balancer® embryo and semen packages in this successful event that is sure to continue generating a lot of excitement going forward. Our junior members were also frontand-center for Cattlemen’s Congress. We worked hard this year with members from across the country selling tickets for the annual donation heifer drawing which offered the choice between the
heifer or $1,000 cash for the first time this year. The anticipated drawing was held during the national sale, and congratulations go to Dustin Kittle for his purchase of the winning ticket. Kittle chose to take the cash option which allowed the heifer to be sold on the National Sale with the proceeds raised going back into our junior program. This year’s heifer was an exceptional female donated by the Beastrom Ranch. In all, the Beastrom Ranch’s generous donation raised over $25,000 to support various junior events throughout the year. A huge thank also goes to our AGJA supporters who bought tickets and continue to support our junior members—without you, we couldn’t do what we do! Like many have expressed, one of the highlights for me are the friendships and relationships that we make and grow through our mutual love of Gelbvieh cattle. As I was talking to my dad about writing this article, I told him how much I enjoy listening to producers tell stories about the good old days. I explained to him how hearing these stories has given me an appreciation for how far the breed has come and how we got to where we are now. It has also created memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. I would encourage all juniors to take the time to visit with an adult member, and equally beneficial—just sit and listen. Not only are these people a wealth of
knowledge, they have great enthusiasm and a vision for the future of our breed. As I get older, I appreciate the knowledge that these producers have and are willing to pass on to the younger generation. As much as I like talking to our adult members, I cherish the relationship I have made with our junior members. Whenever we head to a Gelbvieh event, I know I am going to get to watch Breckon Murray give his mom grief, the Starr girls argue about who is right and I secretly pray that I never have to get in a vehicle that Madalynn Welsh is driving. I also love watching new members, especially young ones, as they begin their Gelbvieh junior journey. It wasn’t that long ago that I was in their shoes and attending my first junior event. I hope the junior program can have the same impact on those members as it has had on me. I would also like to thank the People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity scholarship committee for choosing me to receive this year’s scholarship, and congratulate Molly McClure on receiving the Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity scholarship. I am proud to be a part of a breed that invests so heavily in its junior members. Lastly, thank you to everyone who helped make the 2022 Cattlemen’s Congress and Gelbvieh and Balancer National Show and Sale a huge success. F
