FROM THE CORNER OFFICE MEETING MODERN INDUSTRY DEMANDS
by Megan Slater, Executive DirectorEvery year in the July Herd Reference issue, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) publishes genetic trends for the breed. These graphs show the breed moving in a favorable direction for many traits: calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, and carcass traits including marbling.
While improvements within the breed have been made, it’s important to keep in mind that the beef industry as a whole has also made improvements. The breed’s genetic trend for the Marbling EPD (combined for Gelbvieh and Balancer®) has increased from 0.19 to 0.31 over the last 20 years. This is a testament to the membership’s focus on improving marbling within the breed. At the same time, however, the beef industry as a whole has made significant improvements in the percentage of cattle that grade USDA Choice and USDA Prime. In 2006, 51.7% of fed cattle carcasses graded USDA Choice. In 2015, that average increased to 69.1%. As of February 3, 2023, the national average for carcasses grading USDA Choice was 74.6% and grading USDA Prime was 9.05%.
During the CattleFax 2023 U.S. & Global Protein and Grain Outlook Seminar held during the Cattle Industry Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was mentioned several times that the demand for higher quality beef continues to rise and there are clear market signals showing this increase. Randy Blach, CattleFax CEO, encouraged cattle producers to remain focused on producing high-quality cattle to meet this demand. This is where genetic improvement comes in.
As genetic suppliers to the beef industry, seedstock producers should be focused on building cattle to meet the needs of their customers and beyond. These genetics
have an impact all the way through the supply chain, at the cow-calf level, feeder, packer, and ultimately the consumer.
As mentioned above, Gelbvieh producers have risen to the challenge of increasing marbling and carcass performance of the breed in the past and this same focus should continue forward. Utilizing modern tools, such as EPDs, indexes, reproductive technology and genomic testing can aid in more accurate selection when producing well-rounded cattle for the modern beef industry.
Benefits of utilizing technology such as genomic testing, embryo transfer, or even artificial insemination can often be seen through faster genetic improvement and greater return on investment. These technologies are certainly not a novelty and are economically relevant practices that many in the industry have adapted and been using for several years to make continual improvements in beef genetics. With a longer generation interval than many proteins, utilizing progressive technologies when making breeding decisions becomes vital to keeping up with the demand for higher-quality beef.
Selection indexes are also not a novel concept, but they are an effective tool for multiple trait selection as they incorporate several EPDs and apply appropriate weights to traits of economic relevance. Both $Cow and FPI include traits that are relevant throughout the entire supply chain, such as weaning weight AND marbling. Providing indexes like $Cow and FPI in sale catalogs and educating customers on utilizing those tools when making selection decisions can be helpful.
$Cow represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative
to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. Because a female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, feed efficiency and carcass traits are also included in this index. FPI™, which stands for Feeder Profit Index, is an economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well-ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.
Producing better cattle, better beef and meeting industry demands starts with proven Gelbiveh genetics. If we don’t rise to the challenge, who will? F

KCF BENNETT CHARGE D172 KCF BENNETT E906 KCF BENNETT B501Spring is full of so much promise with the new calf crop for spring calving herds and weaning for those fall calvers. There is nothing better than seeing the results of those breeding decisions frolicking in the pasture with their mamas.
We started 2023 with two high-quality Gelbvieh events, the National Gelbvieh Show & Sale at Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, and the Gelbvieh and Balancer® show at National Western Stock Show in Denver. The quality in our shows ran deep in both locations. In fact, the Gelbvieh and Balancer grand champion bulls both ended up in the top 10 during the Supreme Champion lineup in Oklahoma City.
I had the opportunity to go to National Western for the first time in many years. Life and work just got busy and I hadn’t had time to travel to Denver. While the new yard facilities are beautiful, the best part was the exceptional hospitality of the Colorado Gelbvieh Association. The hamburger fry following the completion of the pen shows was a great opportunity to visit with the pen show exhibitors and ask more questions about the cattle they exhibited. Catching up with friends and members I hadn’t seen in years made it well worth the trip to Denver.
The best thing about the Gelbvieh breed is the people. They are genuine, hardworking and passionate about making great cattle. When I worked for the American Gelbvieh Association, the favorite part of my job was doing farm visits when I was in an area for an event or to do a story for the magazine. You learn so much about a person’s beliefs and how they approach the cattle business while you’re standing in a pasture looking at cattle. It is our greatest connection— the cattle.
What was most valuable to my family’s operation as we began building our registered herd was the opportunity to see sire groups in other herds. I know it’s easier to look at the EPDs and study the data, but there is something about being able to see the phenotype that truly helped us make better decisions.
We all live in a world where we have too many irons and not enough fire some days. I get it. I work a full-time job, help my parents at the ranch, and also have two or three volunteer activities going on. It’s more convenient to look at the videos online or to peruse the catalog. But that only tells you part of the story. Pick up the phone and call the breeder before the sale. Learn about their program and about the pedigree behind that bull or female. The really good breeders are going to tell it to you straight. They want you to be happy with the purchase and come back.
And make the time to visit your fellow breeders. Build those relationships and bridges with other breeders. Take a stroll through the pastures and learn about each other’s programs. This is a people business as much as it is a cattle business.
We are all in the business to sell
Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle and grow interest in the breed. If you don’t have what someone needs, by learning more about other breeders’ programs you will feel more confident recommending their cattle. I have the philosophy of I don’t care who they buy cattle from, but I want them to buy Gelbvieh or Balancer cattle.
Now get busy and plan those farm visits.F

2023 HERD ASSESSMENTS AVAILABLE NOW
2023 Herd Assessments are now available for completion on the AGA Online Registry Service. As a reminder, the annual herd assessment process is not automatically completed by AGA’s registry system. Members must log onto the AGA Online Registry Service and fully complete a herd assessment for females in their herd. 2023 Herd Assessments are due March 15. View a written guide to completing herd assessments online at gelbvieh.org.
INTERNATIONAL LETTER FOR 2023 IS ‘L’
The international letter code for 2023 is ‘L’. All animals within the AGA
registry must be assigned a tattoo at registration that contains the proper international letter code. Beginning with calves born in 2018 and later, members can choose the permanent form of identification for that animal however, a tattoo must still be denoted at the time of calf registration for record-keeping purposes. Accepted forms of permanent identification with the AGA are tattoo, EID and freeze brand. The permanent form of identification denoted in the registry should be permanently affixed to the animal. International codes can be found on the AGA Online Registry Service along the left side of your screen.

REGISTRY TIPS N’ TRICKS SUCCESSFULLY PREP FEMALE RECORDS FOR 2023
by Jake W. Renner, M.S.Being proactive is always easier said than done, but what if it meant saving you from flipping through breeding records in the middle of calving season? For females this starts with administering herd assessments on those females 13 months of age or older and disposing of the females you won’t be registering progeny out of for the year. The herd assessment annual fee of $25 per head fee acts as a one-rate fee that provides the opportunity for members to administer records on the female’s calf including recording and transfers. Both actions are available through the AGA Online Registry Service. Members are strongly encouraged to complete herd assessments prior to the March 15 deadline to avoid late fees.
ACCESSING YOUR HERD ASSESSMENTS:
The following instructions are also available in a print-ready PDF found by scrolling to the bottom of the Animal Registration Resources page located under the Registry tab at Gelbvieh.org. You’ll want to log into your account and locate and select “Herd Mgmt” on the left-hand side of your screen. From the drop-down menu provided select “Inventory”. Once in the inventory, you will have access to all the females currently listed as active under your ownership along with any others that may be associated with your account if you are listed as the cooperator ID for another herd.
You’ll notice a variety of tabs listed horizontally at the top of the following screen. It’s important to recognize the difference between these tabs so you know which females are listed under each.
Tabs showing “Assessed”, followed by a year (2022, 2021, 2020, etc.) signify females that have already been assessed for the year listed.
notice a variety of options available to update the records of all currently active females including placing the assessment, disposing of cull cows and recording exposure data to sires for the 2023 calf crop.
To place the herd assessment on females that are forecasted as dams of 2023 calves to be registered, simply click the 2023 button found to the left of each female’s details under the “Assess For” column. If you do not have any females to dispose of and wish to complete the 2023 herd assessments for all females listed under the “Assessment Age” tab, click the “Complete Yearly HAS Process-Assess all for 2023” button found in the top right corner of the screen.
You will be asked if you are sure you want to assess all females. By selecting to continue and move forward you are agreeing to pay the associated fee of $25 (if processed before March 15) for each female listed on the “Assessment Age” tab at that time.
The tab reading “Assessment Age” designates females that need to be assessed for the current year. If a female is missing a herd assessment for any reason from a previous year, you must contact the AGA to place the proper records on the female(s).
COMPLETING HERD ASSESSMENTS AND CULLING COWS/ HEIFERS:
As you view the list of females under the “Assessment Age” tab, you will
To dispose of a female, click on the small grey icon to the right of the female that looks like a trash can. Using the dropdown menu provided, select the disposal code/reason that best describes why this specific female is no longer in your herd. Be sure to select the green checkmark to lock in your disposal code. It is important to remember that disposal of a cow due to transfer into your commercial herd in an attempt to avoid registering a calf for that year is discouraged. If the female moves from the registered inventory to the commercial
herd in one year and is asked to be placed back into the active inventory to register a calf in a following year, she will be required to pay for the years she was not active per the AGA rules in keeping consistent records on all animals as part of practicing total herd reporting (THR). To keep our data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. The use of disposal codes is fundamental to the practicality and complete process of THR lending itself as a resource that the producer can utilize for future years. Disposal codes
are utilized throughout the year, not just during herd assessment “season” and should be used properly regardless of when they are placed on an animal’s records.
TO RECORD EXPOSURE DATA:
While not mandatory, recording exposure data on females can be beneficial for multiple reasons including the convenience of recording the sire’s registration number and dates associated with sire exposure at the same time as the herd assessment, as well as eliminating the need to enter the sire’s registration number when you are ready to register the 2023 calves.
to dispose of or select AI simply click the red “X” button to the right.
If the female was artificially inseminated, you’ll want to select the AI button to the right of the female’s details and enter the sire’s registration number along with the date the female was AIed.
FEE SCHEDULE:
As always, if you ever run into problems, or have questions please contact the AGA office 303-465-2333 or email registry@ gelbvieh.org. We are happy to help!
If the female was pasture exposed to a sire, you’ll select the PE button and enter the bull’s registration number along with the date the bull was put in with those females as well as the date he was removed. Be sure to select the green check mark to the right of those details after entering. If you accidentally select PE and need to return to the main screen
If you need to request a printed herd assessment form, please contact the office at your earliest convenience to allow time for those forms to be printed, mailed, completed and returned before the March 15, 2023, deadline to avoid late fees.F
JUNIOR CONNECTION OPPORTUNITY IS JUST A HANDSHAKE AWAY
by Jaycie Forbes, AGJA PresidentWatching the ball drop or starting a new year’s resolution is what makes most people excited about ringing in the new year. For me, excitement began to settle in knowing that I would get to start the new year by connecting with Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders from all over the country at Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. Once again, this event was a huge success for our breed. Our National Show and Sale was topnotch in both quality and performance. As breeders, we should be proud of the quality of livestock that was exhibited in all the shows. Congratulations to all the exhibitors and consignors at this year’s national event.
Junior members from all over the country sold raffle tickets for our annual donation heifer fundraiser. All proceeds benefit American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) programs, events and activities fostering industry education, growth and leadership. This year’s female was graciously donated by Rumfelt Farms of Phillipsburg, Missouri. Thank you to
Brad, Amy and Karley Rumfelt for the donation of this exceptional female and for always being huge supporters of the junior program. I would also like to thank everyone who purchased tickets—without you we couldn’t do what we do.
As Cattlemen’s Congress wrapped up, I began preparing for the next event I would be attending—The Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show. AGJA Secretary, Lily Judd and I had the opportunity to represent the AGJA Board at this event in New Orleans, Louisiana, February 1-3. This three-day convention hosts many industry-relevant meetings. Lily and I had the opportunity to attend the Emerging Leader’s Luncheon. At this event, we connected with many industry professionals and future employers. During general sessions we heard from guest speakers like Taylor Sheridan, Archie Manning and Chris Koch. Lily and I also had the pleasure of working the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) booth where we connected and met fellow cattlemen and women from across the world. We also were able to explore
the seven acre trade show and network with agriculture industry businesses and individuals.
One message from the event that really stuck with me was given to me by an individual who offered advice on the importance of networking. He said, “Shake the hands of as many individuals as you can, every day you are selling yourself to future employers.” I believe that is a great message for us as young leaders to remember as we are about to embark on our career paths. This message played a role on my plane ride home as I visited with the gentleman sitting next to me. We talked about the convention I had just attended, and he spoke about his job with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. At the end of the conversation, he gave me his business card and encouraged me to apply for an internship with his department. What I thought was just small talk on an airplane turned into a future opportunity. I encourage all young people to step out of their comfort zone, share our message, and shake as many hands as possible. F

2023 FUTURITY SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
BY JAKE W. RENNER, M.S.Presented at the National Gelbvieh and Balancer® Show, held in conjunction with the third annual 2023 Cattlemen’s Congress, both the People’s Choice Balancer Futurity and Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Futurity Scholarships were awarded. Each scholarship provides the winning recipient with $1,000 to be used for the continuation of their education in the field of their choice. Criteria for both scholarship opportunities include active membership within the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) and being actively enrolled as a high school senior or college student that has not yet turned 22 as of January 1, 2023. Scholarship funds may be used to attend a two-year or four-year college, university or technical school.
The 2023 People’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity scholarship recipient is Gabrielle Hammer, Wallace, Kansas. Gabrielle is the daughter of Lyle and Christy Hammer and currently attends Fort Hays State University majoring in Biology with the hopes of finding a career in Physical Therapy. Graduating from Wallace County High School in 2019 with a cumulative GPA of 4.0, Hammer was actively involved in 4-H, Student Council, National Honor Society, as well as various community organizations over the years. Through 4-H, Hammer could be found leading as an exhibitor and mentor in the dog project at the local and state level all while balancing leadership positions
in both 4-H and the Kansas Junior Gelbvieh Association.
“The Gelbvieh breed has shaped me into the young lady I am today, and I am so grateful for all the opportunities this breed has provided for me. I have come to realize the necessity of educating the public not only about the beef industry but also about agriculture in general,” Hammer mentions.
A ten-year member of the AGJA, Hammer has earned several top recognitions including division winners along with top five female. Additionally, she has been recognized as a top 10 exhibitor for nine of her 10 years within the association. Hammer looks forward to leading by example in her final year as a member of the AGJA and plans to return to the ranch and continue expanding her Gelbvieh and Balancer herd after finishing her secondary education journey.
Preston Dunn, son of Brian and Carolyn Dunn, of St. John, Kansas, was selected as the recipient of the 2023 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity Scholarship. Dunn currently attends Kansas State University as a freshman majoring in Animal Science and Agricultural Economics. A National Honor Society member and 4.0 2022 graduate of St. John High School, Dunn was actively involved in 4-H serving as his county 4-H council president and treasurer. Among numerous awards received within his 4-H career, Dunn was the recipient of the Kansas Key
Award, one of the highest honors awarded to 4-H members across Kansas. Additionally, he has competed on the livestock, meats, and skill-a-thon team placing fifth all-around individual at the 2021 state 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes contest. Dunn didn’t stop there placing second in the state, he participated in the Kanas 4-H Science of Agriculture Challenge presenting on Genetic Selection for Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle. Dunn was also very involved in his local FFA chapter serving in many roles including Chapter Vice-President.
Dunn stated, “I don’t know exactly what direction I will end up and am interested in pursuing internships as I progress through college to learn more and find my place in the industry.”
A six-year member of the AGJA, and currently serving his third year as an AGJA director, he has shown exemplary promise and dedication to the Gelbvieh breed through all walks of life.
Congratulations to both of the 2023 Bull Futurity Scholarship recipients. If you know of an AGJA member who meets the aforementioned criteria to apply for an AGJA scholarship like these, we encourage you to reach out and share the opportunities provided through the AGJA, American Gelbvieh Foundation, bull futurities, and several memorials. Please contact Jake Renner, AGA member and youth activities coordinator, with questions at gelbviehjuniors@gmail.com. F
2022 RING OF GOLD CHAMPIONS NAMED
BY JAKE W. RENNER, M.S.The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is excited to announce the Ring of Gold champions. The 2022 results were tabulated following the conclusion of the Gelbieh and Balancer® Shows at the National Western Stock Show in January.
The AGA established the Ring of Gold program to honor the top animals shown at the conclusion of the show year. Points are earned for grand and reserve grand champions, as well as division champions and reserves, and are based on the actual number of animals shown at each show per division.
To honor those animals who have risen to the top during the show season, the Ring of Gold awards are presented to the top Gelbvieh female, Gelbvieh bull, Balancer female and Balancer bull based on points awarded throughout the year. Animals must earn points in at least two
shows to qualify for Ring of Gold points each year. The 2022-2023 Ring of Gold qualified shows in either the Gelbvieh, Balancer or both divisions were: Iowa State Fair, Missouri State Fair, Northern International Livestock Exposition, National Western Stock Show and Cattlemen’s Congress. The following is a list of the top animals in their Ring of Gold division. Junior shows are not calculated in the total number of entries for the Ring of Gold tabulations.
RING OF GOLD GELBVIEH FEMALE:
1. CDCG 164J, Taubenheim Gelbvieh, Amherst, Neb.
2. CRLL Saterrah 1757J ET, Cameron Nowack, Bland, Mo.

RING OF GOLD BALANCER BULL:

There were no animals to earn points as a division champion or reserve champion at two or more shows within the Balancer Female or Gelbvieh Bull division within the show year. On February 1, 2023, the revised regulations and qualifying standards to earn points at a show for the Ring of Gold will take effect. We encourage all exhibitors at the state, regional and national levels to review the new point standards and encourage the show superintendents to submit the official results following your shows. Ring of Gold rules can be found on the Ring of Gold page under the News & Media tab on gelbvieh.org
Below are this year’s champions in each Ring of Gold division. F
