AGA Executive Committee
Psychic Satisfaction Sale season is at or near its end. What a season it has been! Unprecedented high selling averages around the country spell out the increasing demand for Gelbvieh genetics in a cattle industry like none we have ever witnessed before. Financial management skills are needed to insure profitability and sustainability of our operations at home and at our Association level. Most of us have the training and savvy to maintain our businesses for the next year and onward to future generations. If not we are able to hire financial consultants and advisors to help keep us on the right track. Economics and business are vital to the lifeblood of any program. But there is more to life than just dollars and cents. The people of the world are also important; specifically you, your family, and your friends. These constitute the core of your being and must be nurtured and developed to create the most valuable successes in life. Being a livestock producer, of course, requires immense dedication to the wellbeing of the animals. You must provide feed, water and shelter to the animals. They do not clock in and out, nor do they study any calendars with holidays granted to you. Our youth look at the livestock industry and hope to acquire an operation of their own in lieu of the overcapitalization needs and regulation requirements of an agriculture business today. Many of them choose to seek employment with an existing operation due to these limits as salary and time commitment is pre-determined and they can use their away from work time for themselves. But most of the AGA membership has chosen to own, operate and grow a program that is of their making. These programs often derive less bottom line salary and require a great deal of time commitment. Why do we do it? I have learned that it is due to the monetary value of psychic satisfaction – the value of having what I have created and sharing successes and failures with my family, friends and associates. 4 | May 2012
My family is not limited to my blood relatives. I choose to consider the AGA membership as part of my family. Living and working with the AGA for the last 30 some odd years has rewarded me with long lasting friendships all over the Continent. These are people that I can count on in down times and celebrate with in good times. Some of these friendships are with movers and shakers that I have watched grow and develop through the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA). I have satisfaction that the time I have spent with these folks has impacted my financial bottom line. We will enter somewhat of a lull in our programs as cattle will be calved and rebred, turned out to pasture, and we are left in the office preparing and forecasting the events of the upcoming busy season. This is a time to network with your comrades. Take the time to visit a bull buyers operation or make a call to someone you purchased an animal from. More importantly, invest some time and support in our youth. The AGJA will host state shows, regional shows and of course the Junior Classic in Chillicothe, Mo., this summer. These events are times to interact with the adult membership in attendance as we encourage, support and revel in the successes of those future Gelbvieh producers. We can take great satisfaction that the future of our breed is secure when we invest in our youth. The psychic satisfaction cannot be bought with money and it comes at a great expense of time and commitment, but it is the true reward for what we do in the end. I have often wondered if when I die, would I prefer a million dollars in the bank or a million people at my funeral. I don’t think we have to choose. If we take stock in our psychic satisfaction as well as our financial satisfaction, we can maximize both. Mark Goes is the president of the American Gelbvieh Association. He can be reached at mpgelbvieh@hotmail.com or 402766-3627.

Individuals can subscribe to any of the four lists by clicking on the link located on the Gelbvieh homepage at www.gelbvieh.org or scanning this QR code with your smartphone. If you believe you are on one of our email list serves and you are not receiving our emails, there may be a problem with your service provider not allowing our emails to come through, even to your junk mail. It may be a word, a phrase, a domain or IP address that flags your service provider to not allow the email. There are a couple of things that you can do. First, contact your service provider and ask them to change the setting so that you can receive the email. Contact Dana Stewart, AGA director of member services, for a sample letter. The other option is to create a free, generic email account with Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc., that you use for subscribing to email services. Generally, those domains have no issues receiving our emails. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Dana at danas@gelbvieh.org or 303-465-2333.

successful in the market place. In turn, it will garner success to you as well. Show appreciation. A simple “thank you” after the sale goes a long ways in building customer rapport. A thank you ad in the Gelbvieh World shows people that you appreciate their business while promoting their new purchase and your program at the same time. Make a phone call to see how they are getting along with their purchase. Hosting a customer educational meeting has proven very successful in showing appreciation to current customers as well as attracting new. People remember both the good and more so the bad in customer service. The disrespectful clerk at the parts store; the waiter that was rude and acted as if they could care less if you ate at the business or not. People do business with people they like. The best and most successful businesses work hard and spend as much time on customer service as they do in product development. Galen Fink said at the “Create Your Future” seminar, “If you don’t take care of your customers someone else will.” Are you taking good enough care of your customers or could you be doing it better? Brandon McEndaffer, American Gelbvieh Association central region area coordinator, has accepted a position with Cattlehedging. com based in Fort Collins, Colo. Brandon will continue with the AGA on a full time basis through April 15, then after that will continue to assist members in advertising sales and development of ad copy to complete the June-July Herd Reference Edition of Gelbvieh World. “I greatly value the nearly two years I have had as an area coordinator. We wish him the very best in his new position with Cattlehedging.com,” said Frank Padilla, AGA director of breed promotion. A search has begun for a candidate to fill the position.

To separate genetics from environment, we need to accurately identify an animal’s environment, and the effects that environment may have on performance. Contemporary groups define an animal’s environment, so that genetic and environmental effects can be separated correctly. If animals within a contemporary group are similar in terms of their management and environment, then differences in the performance of the animals can probably be attributed to genetics. Thus, proper contemporary grouping is important, even essential, to obtain accurate and predictable EPDs. By definition, a contemporary group consists of at least two calves of the same sex. Ideally, contemporary groups should be ten animals or larger with at least two sires represented to provide accurate comparisons. However, smaller breeders may not be able to form contemporary groups of that size. Each producer is ultimately responsible for reporting the accurate contemporary grouping of his or her animals. The AGA helps producers by placing animals in the correct contemporary

group, by sex, when information is submitted either online or when sent to the office. But producers must carefully group animals according to other factors, like health and feed. In most cases, calves born within a 90-day period on the same farm can be grouped together. However, consideration should always be given to the way the calves are managed and to their nutrition. A group of cows and calves grazing on improved bluegrass pasture should not be compared to a group of cow/calf pairs grazing on endophyte-infected fescue pasture. The management and nutrition of these two groups are different. Similarly, if illness caused poor performance in some calves, they should not be compared with other, healthy calves. Any variation in management practices that may change—either by benefiting or adversely affecting—an animal’s performance requires that those animals be put into different contemporary groups. For a contemporary group to be useful in comparing sires, at least two sires must be represented in a contemporary group and at least one of those sires should be a reference sire—a sire that has previous progeny records reported. Contemporary groups that represent several sires allow for comparison of different sire’s progeny in a similar environment. At the academic level, contemporary grouping is easy. In real life it can create many difficult decisions but provides the ability to compare animals in an “apples” to “apples” approach. Keep these helpful hints in mind when completing your data: • Use group codes to put calves into contemporary groups according to how they were managed prior to weaning. Also, use the group code to put a sick calf in a single-animal contemporary group if performance is affected. • Don’t worry about grouping by sex, or ET status, since the AGA performance program handles those items automatically. • Take weaning weights and measurements on all calves in a group on the same day (when a majority of the calves are between 160 and 250 days of age). Try to get as many calves as possible in one contemporary group. • Weigh and measure all animals before separating them. If possible, weigh and measure all bulls before castrating. Try to weigh and measure before separating off show calves and bulls for test stations. • Have more than one sire represented in a contemporary group when possible. • Choose a day to take yearling weights and measurements when all animals are between 330 and 410 days of age. • If an age spread is greater than 90 days, select two different weigh dates. Use the least number of weigh dates possible. • Try to take scrotal circumference, pelvic area and hip height on the same day as yearling weights. • Do not weigh each calf individually as it reaches 205 days of age. • Do not include calves receiving special treatment (show, bull test or sale) in the same group with those who were not receiving special treatment.

Engaging Consumers to Tell Our Story The Consumer Beef Index reports that only 28.5 percent of consumers agree the positives of beef strongly outweigh the negatives. Additionally, the report says the average frequency of beef consumption has dropped from 2.7 in 2007 to 2.3 in 2011. These numbers are heading in the wrong direction. It has become more important than ever to tell our story. May is Beef Month and a fitting time to remember the responsibility each of us has in telling our story to consumers. On a personal level, I am involved with a program called the National Beef Speakers Bureau. This program is sponsored by the American National CattleWomen and funded by the National Beef Checkoff Program. The objective of the National Beef Speakers Bureau is to tell the beef story to consumers and household decision makers. Through my involvement in this program I have learned the language we commonly use within our industry is not the language consumers relate to. Furthermore, having direct one-on-one conversations with consumers is more effective than a “talking head.” These one-on-one conversations are something everyone in the beef industry can be engaged in. Here are few tips to help you get the conversation started. Consumers want to hear directly from the farmers and ranchers about the beef story. Consumers want to be engaged in a two-way conversation. They are information seekers and want to have a conversation about issues that matter to them rather than be told. Telling our story and having this conversation can be very simple. Start up a conversation with someone at your grocery store, talk to the person you sit next to during a long flight. The summer show season provides a prime opportunity to engage with consumers and for them to see first-hand how you care for your animals. The beef story is wide-ranging, encompassing the following five categories: animal well-being, environment and community impacts, beef production and safety, nutrition, and lifestyle and convenience. Your individual beef story does not need to include all five of these 12 | May 2012
categories. Pick the one or two points that are most important on your farm or ranch and focus your story around that. Consumers don’t want an expert in everything, they want to see and hear what you are passionate about and what is important to you. Whether you are a seedstock breeder or a commercial cow-calf producer, we are all part of the beef community. That’s right, I used the word “community.” When talking with consumers they don’t want to hear the words producer, agribusiness, or industry. They relate more to the word community. We are a beef community made up of a network of people including farmers, ranchers, cattlemen and vets, who care. Here are a additional few phrases to help you get started with your conversation: • “I feed my family the same beef that is delivered to yours.” • “The tools used to produce the beef include additives proven to be safe and are approved by the government.” • Stay away from words like technology, antibiotics, innovation and hormones. Instead focus on the fact that we use tools for the continuous improvement of healthy beef. It all comes down to a very simple equation: Conversation + Continuous Improvement + Health = Reassured Consumers. At the very least, keep this phrase in mind the next time you talk with a consumers: “A broad community of people who work hard every day to get beef to your plate. From small farmers and ranchers to the cattlemen, cowboys and veterinarians at large feedyards, there is a commitment to raising cattle in a humane and environmentally responsible manner. The result is a food you can feel good about that also is a natural source of 10 essential vitamins and nutrients (protein, iron, zinc, B12, B6, niacin and four others).” Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. Jennifer Scharpe is the director of communications for the American Gelbvieh Association. She can be reached at jennifers@ gelbvieh.org or 303-465-2333.

2011-2012 AGJA Board of Directors
Save Your Tabs Happy Spring! I hope you all are planning on attending the various Gelbvieh shows that are being held this spring and summer show season! It will be a great opportunity to see new places, make new friends, and make many memories that you’ll never forget! Not only do we have a chance to make many memories for ourselves, but we also have a chance to help others experience unforgettable memories. As many junior Gelbvieh members already know, our organization accumulates pop tabs. We have completed many projects with these pop tabs. For a number of years the tabs were donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House uses the money received from the tabs to provide parents a “home away from home” while their seriously ill child is in a hospital. Last year we used the money from the tabs to buy benches for the Kearney County Fairgrounds. This year the AGJA Board of Directors decided to try something new. The money from this year’s pop tabs will be donated to the All American Beef Battalion (AABB).
The AABB organizes and sponsors steak feeds for soldiers and their family members across the United States. During the steak feed, troops are entertained and listen to programs. Some of the programs utilize opportunities for farmers and ranchers to promote the agriculture industry and to inform others of the health benefits of a safe, wholesome supply of beef. What can you do to help? Save your can tabs and bring them with you to the 2012 AGJA Black and Gold Classic in Chillicothe, Mo. States will compete against each other and the top two states that collect the most tabs will earn Challenge Cup points. Besides earning points, more importantly, is the opportunity to serve others who have worked so hard to serve for us If you wish to learn more about the All American Beef Battalion program visit www.steaksfortroops.com. They are always in need of monetary donations and people who are willing to volunteer their time. Grace Hammer is a director for the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. She can be reached at hammerhead_grace@ hotmail.com

The AGA and the American Gelbvieh Foundation thank the following breeders for being pioneers and contributing to this important research project. The Association greatly appreciates the

tremendous grass roots support from AGA members across the country. The AGA will still accept samples as the association works towards the goal of having genotypes on 1,000 animals. A list of bulls, including AI and natural service sires, as well as all females that have been tested, is available on the AGA website at www.gelbvieh.org. Additionally, there is a list of additional AI sires that are desired to be included in this training population.
Members who have semen on these sires or daughters out of one of these sires are asked to consider submitting samples on these animals for inclusion in this project. Members who have not yet submitted a sample to this research are encouraged to do so right away.
