VIEW FROM THE BOARD REQUIRED: COMPETITIVE CARCASS QUALITY
by Dustin Aherin
In 2022, 82% of all beef offered for USDA quality grading was Choice or Prime (73% Choice, 9% Prime), according to USDA data. Combined, Choice and Prime beef has accounted for greater than 75% of all graded beef each year since 2016. All cattle types and all regions are represented in those numbers. Even at Texas and Oklahoma plants, which typically have lower grading rates than northern plants, 70% Choice or Prime has become the norm. In other words, 80%+ Choice or Prime has become table “steaks” for the beef industry.
Given the economic incentives, it’s no surprise that quality grading rates have increased over time. From 2015 to 2020, the average Prime-Choice cutout spread, and Choice-Select cutout spread was $24/cwt and $10/cwt, respectively. In recent years, those spreads have been even larger. Combining 2021 and 2022, the average Prime-Choice cutout spread and Choice-Select cutout spread was $51/cwt and $17/cwt, respectively. Those price spreads set the base for meaningful quality grade premiums. Although many grids offer some yield grade premiums, as long as yield grade 4s and 5s can be minimized, it’s typically quality grade that dominates carcass grid premiums.
While those who have knowingly fed Gelbvieh-influenced and particularly Balancer® cattle have identified the ability of these cattle to meet or exceed industry quality grade expectations, there is ample room to improve industry-wide recognition and reputation. Improving the breed’s reputation requires data.
The first step is simply making cattle feeders aware of the cattle’s general breed background, so Gelbvieh-influenced and Balancer genetics can be associated with feeding performance and carcass merit,
even if only at the lot level. Secondly, individual carcass data is necessary to make genetic improvement. Individual data allows breeders, both commercial and seedstock, to make more informed, accurate breeding decisions. Accuracy is a key component in determining the rate of genetic progress. And with the industry’s rate of improvement in quality grade, it’s critical that Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle keep pace.
Ultrasound records are a highly encouraged, important tool in genetic selection, particularly for breeding stock that won’t be harvested as young animals. However, when it comes to EPDs and genetic evaluation, ultrasound records don’t have the same power as actual carcass records. Generally, collecting carcass data means retaining ownership of load-sized pens of cattle, which may not be easy for all breeders, but if it can be done, it’s highly valuable to the breeder, their commercial customers, and the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA).
The AGA and the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) each offer programs to assist breeders and their commercial customers in collecting individual carcass data. The Carcass Data Collection Project aims to grow the number of sire-verified carcass records that are paired with genotypes to improve the accuracy of carcass EPDs and genomics. The AGA, AGF, and Neogen have partnered to make the genotypes free to all project participants. The AGF runs the Scale and Rail Steer Contest which gives breeders and their commercial customers the opportunity to feed sire-identified steers in contemporary groups with as few as three head or more, with the AGF already having the feedyard and packer lined up. While there are some record-keeping requirements to participate in these programs, sire identification is at the top
of the list, most all association members and many commercial cattlemen will have cattle that meet the record-keeping requirements.
While Gelbvieh-influenced cattle continue to set the industry standard for maternal efficiency (fertility, longevity, and pre-weaning growth), that maternal superiority cannot be fully realized unless there’s strong demand for the resulting calves. In today’s highly competitive beef industry, cattle must both feed and grade well. Cattle that only do one or the other will be discounted. Gelbvieh-influenced cattle don’t need to lead the industry in marbling genetics, but they must be competitive.
Whether collecting carcass data on your own cattle or working with your commercial customers, I strongly encourage everyone to capture and submit as much carcass data as possible to improve EPD accuracy and the rate of genetic progress. If for some reason the data won’t fit into the genetic evaluation, it’s still valuable for continually improving carcass merit and enhancing Gelbviehinfluenced and Balancer cattle’s reputation for carcass quality. The beef industry continues to elevate the high standard for carcass quality, and as Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders, the opportunity to grow market share, demands that we do the same.F

REGISTRY TIPS N’ TRICKS DONOR FEMALES: TEST, CONFIRM, RECORD
by Jake W. Renner, M.S.
Technology within the agriculture industry continues to grow and embryo work is without a doubt one of those advances we continue to see more people utilizing year after year. Whether you’re collecting, selling or buying embryos, the data collection and reporting process on ET calves starts with your embryo inventory.
TEST: WHAT ARE THE DNA REQUIREMENTS FOR DONOR FEMALES?
AGA Donor Female Requirements:
• GGP-100K (Includes Parentage)- $48
• DNA verified to both sire and dam
• Conditions panel - $30
If a parent of a donor does not have DNA on file, we ask that they be ran for a simple $15 parentage test. If deceased, a DNA waiver process is available by request with a $100 fee.
EXTERNAL DONOR DAMS REQUIREMENTS:
External donor dams are females not registered with the AGA but registered with another breed association. If an external donor dam is used in an ET program after March 1, 2013, she must meet the requirements listed above for AGA donor females.
LOCATING THE EMBRYO INVENTORY:
The AGA Online Registry Service allows members to add embryos to their inventory as collected and stored for their use or for sale. There are multiple benefits to recording the future of your herd or business ventures in your embryo inventory like accessibility to the inventory, catching potential dams/sires that do not meet the DNA requirements, transferring to buyers and more.
1. Log into your account within the Online Registry System.
2. Select “Herd Mgmt” from the lefthand menu.
3. From the dropdown provided, select “Breeding”.
4. Find and select the green arrow beside “Embryo Inv”.
ADDING EMBRYOS TO YOUR INVENTORY
1. From the Embryo Inventory Page, select “Add New Embryo”.
2. A new screen will appear asking for the following required information:
- Sire’s Registration Number
- Dam’s Registration Number
- Flush Date
3. After entering the data, select “Find these”.
It is important to remember that registration numbers should always include a capital AMGV, and no space, between the numbers when recording data. Example: AMGV1234567.
After the information above has been entered, a new screen will appear asking for more detailed information on the embryos you wish to store in your digital inventory. You should see the animal details on both the dam and sire from the previous screen including the registration number, tattoo and name. You can enter as many details as you wish, understanding that quantity is the only requirement. Once these details have been entered, simply select “Save Inventory” to be sent back to your inventory screen.
WHAT IF I DON’T OWN THE DONOR FEMALE?
If you do not own the donor female from which you are registering ET calves there are two options to choose from in order to get the ET calves into your active inventory:
Option 1: The owner of the female will need to enter the embryos into their inventory and transfer them into yours.
Option 2: The owner of the female may contact the AGA staff (in writing) and verify that you, the registering member, has permission to register ET calves from the donor female in question. They will need to confirm the number of embryos purchased along with the associated flush date.
HOW DO I KNOW IF A FEMALE HAS A DONOR PERMIT ON FILE?
From your Embryo Inventory: It is very simple to tell if the embryos you’ve entered will run into any hiccups when registering the ET calves for your use, or a customer. If the female used has “Donor Permit on File” in green, she’s good to go! If she is not, it will read “No Donor Permit for this cow;”.
From the AGA Online Registry home page: On the left side of the screen, beneath the Work Menu is a list of options including “ET Donor Cows”. If selected, the next screen will show you every donor female within the AGA Online Registry along with their permit date and genetic condition status.
From the animal’s detail screen: At the top of the female’s detail screen, if she is a permitted donor female she will have “Donor Permit on File” in bold black letters just above her registration information.
If you have any questions about your embryo inventory, please call the office at 303.465.2333 or email registry@gelbvieh. org and we would be more than happy to assist you.F

INFORMATION EXCHANGE
DISCOVER THE COW POWER IN YOUR HERD!
The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project is a collaborative effort with the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF), and Neogen, to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information on females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.
With generous support from the AGF, the Cow Power Project is now offering a lower price for the genomic test. Through participation in the project, members have the opportunity to receive a research price of $20 for a GGP-100k genomic test on females to DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory. Additionally, participants who submit both mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of their current active cow inventory will receive an additional one-time $4 per head rebate. Thus, all females can receive a GGP-100k genomic test for only $16. For just $1 more than a parentage test, members are encouraged to take advantage of this incredible opportunity and learn about the cow power in their herd.
To enroll in the Cow Power Project, contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or visit Gelbvieh.org.
DNA TEST HERD SIRES
Don’t forget to collect a DNA sample on walking sires that don’t already have a minimum of a GGP-100k test result on file with the AGA in order to register progeny. The best time to collect samples is ahead of bull turnout for breeding. The GGP-100k testing must be ordered through AGA and sent to Neogen laboratory to meet this requirement.
DNA samples collected with a tissue sampling unit (TSU) are the preferred method of DNA sample collection, per the recommendation of Neogen. This preference is due to the sample type’s low failure rate, the speed at which a sample can be collected chute-side, and ease and speed of handling at the lab. However, the lab still accepts blood and hair card samples.
To order TSUs, TSU applicators, blood cards, or hair cards, please call the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email registry@ gelbvieh.org.
DIGITAL SUBSCRIPTIONS AVAILABLE
Did you know the AGA offers digital subscriptions in addition to the hard copy magazine you receive in your mailbox each month? If you would prefer to receive Gelbvieh World or The Profit Picture digitally, please contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 to request the change and ensure we have a valid email address on file for you.

JUNIOR CONNECTION BEEF ADVOCACY- BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN PRODUCERS AND CONSUMERS
by Sadie Morris, AGJA Director
Many consumers today are increasing their interest in the beef they eat and how cattle are raised. Most consumers today are at least several generations removed from agriculture.
The two Cs of the beef industry are we CARE and we’re CAPABLE. The two Cs allow us to bridge the gap with our audience that is involved in the beef industry. So, who is our audience? Our audience is chefs, grocers, nutritionists, farmers and ranchers. 97% of farms and ranches are family-owned. How can these family-owned farms bridge the gap between themselves and the consumer? Is it through the world wide web, Facebook, magazines or just good old-fashioned word of mouth? In my area of Mississippi, I have seen several farms go to marketing their own beef by selling whole, halves or quarters of a steer, to different consumers/ individuals. Most market through all the above-mentioned outlets of marketing tools. This is a method of bridging the gap. The farms or the local meat house also plug in a tidbit to give the audience an idea about their farms on the packaging labels. Local family-owned farms and ranches truly carry on the two Cs because they care not only about their animals but also about the consumer. People in the cattle industry are perfectly willing and capable of almost anything in life because cattle farming forces us a lot of time to simply make choices and make things happen. We are capable of almost anything.
How do we relay the message that we CARE? Ways of showing that we care are shown through our record keeping, our studies of genetics, maintaining Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certifications,
and providing the proper nutrition, and proper medical attention to our cattle, as needed. Why do we have to show that we CARE? Very simple answer. People just want to know where their food comes from. People want transparency. Buying food is just like buying a car or equipment; the more a person knows about it the more comfortable they are about purchasing or consuming it.
How do we relay the message that we are capable? What are we capable of? Family-owned farms that sell beef directto-consumers can provide the consumer with all of the information needed from parentage to the nutrition of the animal. The studies and beef projections have helped us become more aware of what our animals are and what they can produce or are expected to produce. We have all the proper tools of education extension, equipment and knowledge to be capable.
For us to bridge the gap between producers and consumers is very important, yet simple, when you really get down to the nitty-gritty of it. We simply need to show the consumer that we care about them and
our animals and that we are perfectly willing and capable of feeding the masses and providing the highest quality beef whether it’s on the plate or in the next bull or heifer you purchase. F

MESSAGE FROM AGJA PRESIDENT
by Jaycie Forbes, AGJA President
The final countdown is on until Gelbvieh juniors roll into South Dakota for the AGJA Great Dakota Classic. I am so excited to have everyone in my home state for the 2023 junior nationals in Huron, South Dakota, July 2-7.
The American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) board of directors has been working diligently to improve, change, and add to our schedule. We have taken a hard look at the schedule to allow our event to run smoother and offer additional time in between contests. A change in our prepared speaking contest allows juniors to pre-record their speeches and submit them in a preliminary round, due June 1. The top 15 from each division will be notified and invited to deliver their speeches in person before a judge for the final round to find our top 10 winners. Another exciting change is the addition of a market heifer division to our Friday show. Look at the Junior Classic page found under the juniors tab at Gelbvieh.org to learn more about this opportunity along with other improvements, changes and additions to this year’s junior classic. Don’t forget to check out the New in 2023 tab as well!
SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year, AGJA members who are graduating high school, or attending college are encouraged to apply for scholarships to assist in their educational endeavors. This year up to $5,500 will be awarded to active junior members seeking this opportunity provided by the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF), and memorials in place for past members who saw the value in the Gelbvieh Junior program and your continued education. The AGJA scholarship application applies to all available scholarships presented at the Junior Classic and is available online under the Juniors tab at Gelbvieh.org. Scholarships must be submitted electronically to gelbviehjuniors@gmail.com before June 1, 2023.
Available Scholarships:
Earl Buss Memorial Scholarship $1,000

The Junior Classic is an event that could not be made possible without the support of all our sponsors and breeders. From the donation heifer fundraiser and our online semen and embryo auction to all our day and awards sponsors, we thank you for your constant support to make our event a success. The junior association would not be what it is today without the unwavering support of every person who has invested in us in any way, shape or form.
I would like to give a shout-out to the South Dakota Gelbvieh Junior Association for their continued efforts to ensure this year’s junior national is a success. As part of the planning committee on both sides, I am excited for everyone in attendance to partake in all the events we have planned.
I hope to see each one of you, July 2-7 in Huron for the AGJA Great Dakota Classic. I fully expect this event to live up to its name and be a great experience for everyone. F

A NOTE FROM YOUR 2022-2023 AGJA AMBASSADOR
by Madalynn Johnson, AGJA Ambassador
Hello, my name is Madalyn Johnson, and I am your 2022-23 ambassador. Being chosen as the ambassador this past year has allowed me to expand my horizons and experience the Gelbvieh breed in a new light. I have traveled to the American Royal and Cattlemen’s Congress. Cattlemen’s Congress was an experience unlike any other, and I enjoyed seeing Gelbvieh on the main stage. Being behind the scenes made me realize how much work goes into running these shows. Watching the cattle go through the ring, especially during the pen show, made me realize why I ran for this position. Although we pride ourselves on great maternal quality and growth across the board, Gelbvieh wouldn’t be the same without the people. Watching people come together and lend a helping hand to their fellow cattlemen shows the true essence of what the cattle industry is all about. Building the bonds not only through the cattle but with your fellow member. I didn’t just apply for this position because of the people, but I also did it for the opportunities and experiences. In my time being the AGJA ambassador, I have grown
tremendously, and my agriculture story has developed as well. I have learned more about the Gelbvieh breed and myself along the way. I have met lots of people and made many connections through these months, and I look forward to seeing them all again in South Dakota. Seeing the quality that the Gelbvieh breed brought to the table made me proud to be part of such a wonderful breed. Watching the breed develop even in the short time I have been with the AGJA, has made me excited for the future of this breed. I also look forward to seeing Gelbvieh develop and flourish through the youth that we are nurturing today. Because after all, we are the future of Gelbvieh. Through contests and leadership opportunities, the youth of Gelbvieh are developing crucial skills that will then let them lead this breed like their elders before them and continue its path toward the future. The next big Gelbvieh opportunity I have in the coming months is the Junior Classic in South Dakota. I hope to see everyone there and I encourage you to do as many contests as you can. See y’all in South Dakota! F

NEW IN 2023!
PREPARED SPEAKING:
We are extremely lucky to have such a large number of participants enter this contest. Because of the large number, in the interest of time management, the AGJA board of directors has elected to make a slight adjustment to the prepared speaking contest structure.
1. Contestants must submit a pre-recorded video by the June 1, 2023, deadline in order to be eligible for the final round for the selection of the top 10 within their age division at the Junior Classic event.
2. Recorded speeches will be evaluated by a preliminary judge.
3. The top 15 participants within each age division will be selected to present their speech during the week of Junior Classic in front of a final judge.
ADDITIONAL SHOWS:
The AGJA board of directors is beyond excited to announce that we will be welcoming, for the first time in AGJA Junior Classic history, a market heifer show. That’s right, exhibitors ready and willing will have the opportunity to highlight the dynamic and versatile qualities of Gelbvieh-influenced females.
Details on the Market Show can be found under the “Cattle” tab.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
We recognize that not all rookies (first-time contestants) join our great association prior to the AGA National Show & Sale the previous January. Therefore, the opportunity for those individuals to earn points toward the Rookie of the Year title by selling donation heifer tickets is lessened. The following adjustments have been made to the tabulation of points for exhibitors:
• Donation heifer ticket points will continue to be tabulated for all exhibitors, regardless of age division or rookie status, in their pursuit of the All-Around Exhibitor title.
• Exhibitors joining us for their first junior classic and eligible for the coveted Rookie of the Year title will not have donation heifer ticket points included in that specific contest tabulation. F

Regional shows provide competition and show opportunities on a smaller, more local level for AGJA members. Like the annual Junior Classic, regional shows are held in a different location each year, determined by interest from a state junior association willing to serve as the host and show coordinator.
The AGJA Southwest Showdown Regional Show will be held in Carthage, Missouri, May 26-28 at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. We want to thank the Heart of America Gelbvieh Junior Association in Missouri for their work putting this event together and hope to see you all Memorial Day weekend! Reliability: Becoming the Resource
by JAKE W. RENNER, M.S.
On October 14, 2018, my life changed forever. Que the dramatics. I woke up in Wichita, Kansas, with a booming voice outside my hotel window. My eyes barely open at 6:00 a.m. after what seemed like a mere minute of sleep, peering out the window to see a dark sky, the moon peeping through the clouds, the fall air full of humidity, and my entire body riddled with anxiety. At 7:00 a.m. a shot was fired.
I trained for months to run my first marathon and today was the day I’d been both anxiously waiting for but fearing all at the same time. I mention celebrating the small wins and today, I was testing that theory head on. For four hours, I endured a sea of people, rain, wind and injury. Fellow runners surrounded me from all walks of life with varying athletic ability. Can you imagine putting in all that time and effort just to drop out 20 miles in? Neither can I. So, I kept moving forward one step at a time. I crossed that finish line 26.2 miles and four and a half hours later, still raining
with a 15-degree drop in temperature from start to finish with nobody at the end of that journey, but my family, the announcer, and a soaking wet volunteer handing out medals and a bottle of water. I finished. For those familiar with the show side of our industry, I got the slap. What does this have to do with the beef industry or how is this relatable to farmers and ranchers? Around every corner, over every hill, there is inevitably another hurdle, but among those obstacles, you will find success, lessons to be learned, friendship and support along the way.
It’s important to remember, regardless of the end goal(s), or where you see yourself in 10 years to celebrate the small wins. All too often we get wrapped up in the endgame and lose sight of the lessons we learned. It is natural to simply chalk it up as a “good day” and keep moving forward. Take a second and reward yourself for a job well done or risk losing sight of the journey. I think one of the hardest lessons we can teach ourselves is humility. Understanding fully, that
regardless of how much time, money and effort, we put into something there are inevitably circumstances outside of our control. Be it weather, finances, markets or health. I am by no means perfect, nor have I mastered this lesson myself. But as somebody who has chosen this industry for themselves, adopted into a community overflowing with support, networking opportunities, and friendship with very little to no direct ties, I can easily say that lessons are learned around every corner. I wrote an article two years ago that would’ve been featured in the 2020 issue of Gelbvieh World discussing the importance of recognizing the people you surround yourself with. Albeit true for the industry, when we focus on this incredible breed that we choose each and every day, it’s easy to look around and see how quickly your average can be brought up based on the people we continue to surround ourselves with; the type of people that become resources in countless ways.
To those who may just be starting, whether you have 500 cows that were

inherited, five cows you purchased from the sale barn, or whether you’re just somebody with an intense interest in doing the world some justice by raising such a sustainable resource like beef, never forget that there is a place for you here. That does not mean that your journey will not be wrinkled with hardship, frustration and even failure. But again, do your best to stay humble, and remember where you started. Nobody, regardless of their situation, even those more privileged, was successful on day one. Appreciate the little wins, find your niche, and celebrate that within the beef community success looks different for each of us. Whether your talents serve the industry through research, education, production, communication or otherwise, there is a place for you among some of the greatest men and women that serve the land we’ve been gifted from generations before us.
There’s nothing wrong with starting over, there’s nothing wrong with recognizing defeat. What matters more is what you do with that when you’re done. I tell
everyone that I have the privilege of mentoring, if they are turned down or do not receive what they’ve asked for be it a job, scholarship, internship or supplemental funding, they are allowed to feel defeated. However, it’s what we do with that news that defines who we are as agriculturalists. I allow myself 24 hours to throw a pity party, be frustrated, and contemplate other options I may have overlooked in the beginning. Those are without a doubt in my mind justifiable actions based on the unique circumstances. After 24 hours, we will get up and take that first step in a new direction with more understanding and insight than we did before because we’ve learned from our mistakes. You are bound to find a win along the way. Don’t forget to celebrate when it happens.
Become a resource for others that may be battling similar defeat within their journey. Does this mean you have to jump on social media and divulge in sharing all the intimate details or seek approval from others? No. Tell your story in a way that suits you and your objectives
as a cattleman or cattlewoman. I cannot say that enough. It does not have to be a blog on the internet or a new fancy social media account. Taking five seconds out of your day to tell somebody what you did this morning and the impact it makes on the role you are currently serving not only in your operation or organization but the industry as a whole. We can all agree that within every success, or failure, lessons are learned. Why not use those to benefit yourself and others by becoming a resource for the next generation, your neighbor, your professional organizations, or that future advocate sitting on the sidelines afraid of taking that first step into the cattle industry for fear that the finish line will be empty?
Consider who makes up the five people who make up your “average” that have served as a resource for you. What opportunity for growth do you bring to their table? People are watching, so act like a leader and give them something positive to rely on. Be somebody worth knowing. F

AGA Board of Directors Meeting Highlights
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) board of directors met March 31 through April 1, 2023, in Omaha, Nebraska. The following are highlights of the meeting and action points approved by the board.
ASSOCIATION
Approve minutes from December 2022 meeting during the AGA National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
FINANCIALS
Year-to-date financials ending February 2023 were reviewed and approved. The AGA is in good financial standing and investments are performing well.
AGA COMMITTEES
The board reviewed and approved committee appointments for 2023 made by President Lori Maude. AGA committees are an important part of the AGA’s grassroots efforts. Letters to those members appointed to serve on a committee are sent in the spring.
BREED IMPROVEMENT
The board discussed the need to update the indexes AGA currently publishes. Dr. Bob Weaber is leading this task using a new index creation tool called iGENDEC. The board voted to have the breed improvement committee look at a new maternal index and terminal index and discuss a supply chain (all-purpose) index.
The board also discussed sustainability efforts as well as possible tools for use in the beef x dairy space.
Total herd reporting was also a topic of conversation. The board reviewed the AGA’s current procedures and how those differ from the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) guidelines. Staff is working to put together a framework of how BIF guidelines would be implemented and will present it to the membership at the 2023 convention in Omaha, Nebraska.
NATIONAL SHOW AND SALE
Discussion was held regarding recommendations from the National Show Committee and National Sale Committee, including an update on the National Western Stock Show. The board voted to approve the National Show Committee’s recommendation to hold the 2024 national show at Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City. The board also voted to approve the National Sale Committee’s recommendation to hold the 2024 national sale in conjunction with the national show.
BRAINSTORMING
The AGA board held an in-depth brainstorming session to discuss positively positioning the Gelbvieh breed to take advantage of upcoming cowherd expansion. Industry education for members, marketing campaigns, and strategies were discussed. Staff will work
to implement the ideas that came out of this session.
AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION
The AGA board received an update on the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) including a new online giving form, an upcoming e-newsletter, and the establishment of a new junior fund for long-term support of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. The AGA board and AGF board will be working together to review the AGF’s current bylaws with legal counsel. The AGA board voted for Leland Clark and Derek Martin to be AGA representatives on that task force. F

COW FEMALE GENOTYPING PROJECT
THANKS TO GENEROUS SUPPORT FROM THE AMERICAN GELBVIEH FOUNDATION, TESTS ARE NOW BEING OFFERED AT A NEW LOW PRICE OF $20/HEAD!
Discover the Cow Power in your herd
The Cow Power Female Genotyping Project is a collaborative effort with the American Gelbvieh Association, American Gelbvieh Foundation, and Neogen to increase the number of genotypes and phenotypic information on females in the AGA herdbook. Collection of this information helps to increase the accuracy and predicting power of EPDs used to describe Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle.
Members will receive a special research price of $20 on a GGP 100k genomic test to DNA test at least 90% of their current active cow inventory.
Participants that submit mature weights and body condition scores electronically on at least 90% of their current active cow inventory will receive an additional, one-time $4 rebate per head.
Requirements:
DNA samples must be collected with an Allflex Tissue Sampling Unit. Blood and hair samples are not eligible for this project.
*This is a research project and DNA turnaround time, data processing, and other timelines within this project are not reflective of current AGA turnaround times.
For more information or to enroll in the project, contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email registry@gelbvieh.org.
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is pleased to announce the addition of Sarah Dannehl, Wymore, Nebraska, to the AGA staff as the performance programs coordinator. In her role, Dannehl will assist AGA members and customers with the AGA Online Registry Service, support AGA data collection projects, help members with DNA testing questions, and focus on member education efforts.
AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION HIRES DANNEHL
“We are excited to have Sarah joining our talented AGA team,” says Megan Slater, AGA executive director. “She has a strong cattle background and a wellsuited set of talents that make her a great fit for this role where she will work closely with AGA members and customers.”
Dannehl grew up on her family’s farm and ranch in Bertrand, Nebraska. She was heavily involved in 4-H and FFA showing cattle and horses. She received her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May of 2020. She was involved in the Sigma Alpha agricultural sorority and the Alpha Zeta national honor society. During college, she pursued many animal
science related internships but she didn’t find her niche until she interned with the AGA in 2019.
“Growing up on my family’s commercial cow-calf operation, raising Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle, the breed is very near and dear to my heart,” said Dannehl. “I truly enjoyed my internship with the AGA and am excited to be back working with the AGA team as well as members and producers.”
Dannehl began her role on April 17 and can be reached at sarah@gelbvieh.org or at the AGA office at 303-465-2333. F

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to have Shianna joining us full-time upon her graduation,” says Megan Slater, AGA executive director. “She brings a wellsuited set of talents and experience that make her a great fit for this role where she’ll continue to work closely with AGA members and customers.”
Bradley grew up in South Whitley, Indiana, where she was an active 4-H member and FFA officer. She will graduate on May 12 with her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science with a concentration in Animal Agribusiness and a minor in Farm Management. During her time at Purdue, she was an active member of Block and Bridle. She recently worked part-time at the AGA
assisting members with the AGA Online Registry Service.
“Working at the AGA the past few months has truly been informative, from learning about breeding selection tools to learning from leaders in the industry, It feels great to be able to apply my education here at the AGA,” Bradley said. “I look forward to continuing to work with such great members and diving deeper into the Gelbvieh breed and its role in the beef industry.”
Bradley will begin her new role with the AGA on May 15 and can be reached at shianna@gelbvieh.org or at the AGA office at 303-465-2333. F
The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is excited to announce the hiring of Ava Perrier, Eureka, Kansas, as the AGA summer intern. In her internship, Perrier will be assisting in all aspects of AGA operations including member programs and services support, member education, and American Gelbvieh Junior Association Junior Classic Activities.
“The AGA’s internship program is focused on giving students a well-rounded experience with all facets of a beef breed association, from member services and junior programs, to communications and marketing,” says Megan Slater, AGA
executive director. “We are excited to have Ava joining us for the summer and assisting in these different areas.”
Perrier grew up on a registered Angus ranch near Eureka, Kansas. She attends Kansas State University pursuing an Animal Science degree in a communications and marketing option. She is a member of the Kansas State University Meat Judging team, serves as vice president of finance in her sorority, as an Animal Science Mentor, and is active in the Silver Key Sophomore Honorary. Ava hopes to continue her passion for communicating with people while making
an impact on the beef industry in her future career.
“Breed associations are vital to the beef industry, and I have always been drawn to the work they do,” said Perrier. “The team at the AGA is full of hard-working, passionate people, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn from them. I can’t wait to meet all the juniors, breeders and everyone else involved in the AGA!”
Perrier will begin her internship on May 22 and can be reached at intern@gelbvieh. org or at the AGA office at 303-4652333.F

2023 Danell Diamond Six Ranch 28th Annual Bull Sale Results
Reported by DON DANELL
March 18, 2023
BillPelton.com online auction
Danell Diamond Six Ranch
Lewistown, Montana
AVERAGES:
17 yearling bulls at $7,441
3 Purebred Gelbvieh Bulls at $14,333
14 Balancer Bulls at $5,964
Due to a late change in circumstances this year, we decided it made more sense to try an online-only auction, closing on our regular sale day. We had a pre-sale gathering and viewing of the bulls at the ranch Friday night and enjoyed a lovely evening and wonderful meal with a good turnout of buyers, bidders, friends and neighbors!
SALE HIGHLIGHTS:
Lot 10, JOB DANELL Bruiser 43K, was our high seller this year at $26,000. After an exciting bidding war, Samee Charriere of Ledgerwood Gelbvieh in Clarkston, Washington, placed the winning bid. He is one of only 21 sons of our 2021 highselling bull, JOB DANELL Pay Pal 12H, that have been offered so far and they have been in great demand! Bruiser is a
homozygous polled, homozygous black, 92.2% Purebred Gelbvieh bull that is long made with a 14.94 ribeye and an extra rib! Bruiser’s donor dam is known for great growth in her calves and this one fits her record with a 5.2-pound ADG on test (123 ratio). Bruiser has the EPDs, ultrasound data, pedigree, performance and solid look to make an imprint on the breed!
Lot 8, JOB DANELL Top Shelf 38K ET, is a homozygous polled, black, 99.9% Purebred Gelbvieh bull that is headed to Diamond D Gelbvieh in Medina, North Dakota, after Richard & Sara Heinrich and Dennis Gustin won the bid at $11,000. From a favorite sire, JOB DANELL TD Chico Loco 28Y, and an elite donor dam, JOB DANELL Josephine 33C (also the dam of the above-mentioned breed changer – JOB DANELL Pay Pal 12H), Top Shelf has the pedigree, calving ease, style, performance and disposition to really make a name for himself! He was rated a perfect 5/5 (claw/heel) foot score by our vet, Greg Carlson, and of very special note, as a Purebred Gelbvieh bull - his ultrasound measurement of a whopping 4.29 IMF!
Lot 4, JOB DANELL Chisel 18K, also sired by JOB DANELL Pay Pal 12H, comes in at $10,250 – winning him a ticket to Greenfield, Iowa, and a home with Galen Geidel of Geidel Cattle Company. Chisel is a homozygous polled, homozygous black, 79.7% Gelbvieh, Balancer bull with a performance record and set of balanced EPDs from calving ease, growth and carcass, to put him in a league of his own!
Lot 16, JOB DANELL Kickstart 65K, is a homozygous polled, homozygous black, 34.3% Gelbvieh, Balancer bull that sold for $9,250 to Tim Robinson of Robinson Farms in Pleasureville, Kentucky. With a tenderness score of 9 and from a young sire, JOB DANELL Bogart 67H, that boasts a 16.8 ribeye (116 ratio) and a 4.7 IMF (131 ratio), and an absolute favorite young, purebred Angus dam, JOB DANELL Butterfly 53G, Kickstart promises to be an excellent beef producer! Kickstart will be our herd sire this spring and then go to his home in Kentucky.
3 bulls brought $7,250:
Lot 14, JOB DANELL Secret Agent 59Ksired by JOB DANELL Eliot 71H, rounds out our bulls headed out of state – selling to Wade Shuler of Shuler Farms, LLC in Powell, Wyoming.
Lot 2, JOB DANELL Romeo 14K – sired by Pay Pal’s sire (JOB DANELL Paygrade 68E), only has to travel across the highway to Colver Gelbvieh and Fred & Leslie Colver of Lewistown, Montana.
Lot 13, JOB DANELL Marvel 58K – sired by JOB DANELL Bogart 67H, heads to Wes Rorvik of Rorvik Bros., LLC in

Humdinger 32K for $6,000, are sticking around Lewistown – headed to Jensen Ranch, Paul and Jen Jensen.
