19 TH ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE and BULL & FEMALE SALE SAT U RDAY, MARCH 12 | OPEN HOUSE 10 AM | SA LE 1 P M

WELC OME Thank you for attending our 19th annual spring open house and sale. Our goal is to produce cattle the way you do. Even though we have seedstock herds, we treat our cattle like commercial cows. They must calve every year right on schedule or they go to market. If we pamper our cattle and you don’t, then they fall apart for you. These bulls are selected from 10 herds and over 400 cows, so they are truly the best of the best. We have been stacking pedigrees for calving ease, calf vigor at birth, excellent growth, moderate frame, moderate milk, outstanding fertility, superior carcass, and calm disposition for over 30 years. The daughters of these bulls will leave a positive impact on your herd for generations. Cows will be low maintenance, fertile, calm, profitable and productive. We produce cattle that work for you, not the other way around. Please call one of the MBCC team members before the sale to discuss your beef business goals. Our most important job is to help you select the bulls that best fit your goals. In addition to complete EPDs, the bulls are rated from 1-5 stars on various traits. CALVING EASE: 5 = use on heifers, 4 = use on cows and a few heifers, 3 = use on cows, 2 = steer GROWTH, FEMALES, CARCASS: 5 = elite, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = steer DISPOSITION: 5 = very calm, 4 = calm, 3 = average, 2 = steer

You reap the carcass premiums and see the superior growth and carcass genetics from MBCC bulls and we get to use the data to improve our herds.

SALE DE SCRIP TION Bulls and females will have their base price listed on the ‘buyer board’ and everyone with interest on a particular animal will place their buyer number next to the animal’s ID. If more than one person has interest in buying the animal, each will have the opportunity to bid by $100 (bulls) or $50 (females) increments until we have a buyer. In addition, you are able to bid using LiveAuctions.TV as an Internet partner. If you are the only person with your number next to an animal’s number and there are no online bids, you have the option to buy the animal at the base price. Placing your number next to an animal’s ID does NOT obligate you to purchase or bid on the animal. There are two unique things that we do to help you get one of your top choice animals for the least money (really!). First, we ask you to rank your top three bull and female choices. You will get an index card when you get your buyer number and you will list your top 3 bulls and top 3 female choices (or top 6 choices if you need 2 or more). Hand index card to Mark before 12:00 noon. We then make the sale order based on the number of producers that have an animal ranked highly. We have all been to sales where we really want the animal that is slated to sell 4th in the sale, but we also like the 2nd one due to sell. The 2nd animal in the sale sells for $100 below the price you were willing to spend and you think “I just got a bargain.” Now the 4th animal is offered for sale and it brings $400 less than you would have paid. Now you are disappointed. That rarely happens here; 89% of our buyers at our 2020 sale took home their first or second choice bull. When a buyer purchases an animal, we ask if they are interested in any others. If they need additional animals, their buyer number stays on the board with the selected bulls or females. If not, we erase their buyer number associated with every other bull or female they marked. This allows you to see most of your competition for the animals on your list. Of course, someone online could bid on an animal that you have marked, but we are confident that most of the bulls and females will be sold to those attending the sale in person. We get many compliments on our unique system. We do not think an auction should prod someone into spending more than they want to spend. We are much more interested in you getting the best animals for your herd goals. We

are not interested in squeezing the last dollar out of your bull budget. If you spend $100 less than you anticipated, take your spouse out to dinner! One of our repeat customers calls it the most honest sale he has ever attended, and we appreciate that compliment.

Order will be determined by interest level. The goal is for you to get the bull you really want for as close to the base price as possible — really! If you cannot attend on Saturday, please call one of the MBCC Team members and we will have someone bid on your selections. Satisfaction is guaranteed. You can also bid via LiveAuctions.TV . The last 5 years, we have sold about 70% of the bulls the day of the open house. If you need a quality bull, please join us Saturday, March 12th! If you have questions about bulls and/or females, call us ahead of the sale and please arrive by 10 a.m. We get very busy after 11:00 and we do not want to neglect you. Getting the right animals is a BIG DEAL and we are glad to help.

THE MISSION OF MIDWE ST BEEF CAT TLE C ONSULTANTS Provide practical information and herd improving genetics that will enhance your bottom line. Raising beef cattle should be profitable and enjoyable. When your cattle are easy calving, efficient, vigorous at birth, low maintenance, easy fleshing, high growth, moderate milk, excellent disposition, fertile and produce a superior carcass, you have the combination of traits that put a smile on your face and money in the bank. “I purchased my first bull from MBCC in 2009. I have bought a bull every year and am very pleased with the quality, performance, and the dispositions of the bulls. They met all specifications. I will continue to buy bulls from Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants.” — WES BOOKER, LAWRENCEBURG, INDIANA 19 TH ANNUAL BULL & FEMALE SALE

39 “As a beef cattle veterinarian, I hear about “problem cattle” nearly every day. One issue I hear about with increasing frequency is feet issues in breeding bulls. Please review our customer guarantees on page 2 of the catalog. Bullet point #5 says “structural correctness is guaranteed for life”. What other seedstock producer guarantees bulls NEVER to have the genetic defects of corkscrew claw or front toes curling and crossing over for the life of the bull? We have sold over 500 bulls and have needed to honor this guarantee one time. We have many herd owners that are still using the bull they purchased 7, 8 or even 9 years ago! A bull should be a long-term investment in your herd. You should not have to “cash him in” after only 1-2 years. If you are tired of bulls having to be culled after only 1-2 breeding seasons due to foot issues, come and join us on March 12.” — W. MARK HILTON, DVM

He’s In Demand is a great looking bull with a set of EPDs to match. He would make a great heifer bull or cow bull, could go either way. Not only could you keep replacement heifers out of him but he’ll also get your feedlot calves to market weight faster. Five stars across the board!

6J LOT 45

The sire of MBCC Susie 6J is a 50% Balancer bull with 238 progeny recorded. He is top 5% WW, 2% YW, better than top 20% in CEM, HP, PG30, STAY, DOC, SC and $Cow (every ‘female important’ EPD). He is also top 15% marbling, top 3% FPI and 10% EPI. There are no other bulls in the breed that have this combination of excellence. If you want a beef bull to look like a beef bull, you will love Civil War. The dam is an ET daughter of the most influential cow I have ever owned - MBCC College Fund 6J. MBCC Candice 6JE ET is a daughter of Bennett Absolute that is top 20% WW and YW and top 35% or better for HP, PG30, STAY, DOC, SC and $Cow. Her first calf is a herdsire in Kevin Holst’s Gelbvieh herd in Iowa. The granddam of MBCC Susie 6J is MBCC College Fund 6J that had 14 natural calves and 11 ET calves for me in her 15 years on my farm. She settled first service AI 13/14 years, was flushed 5 times, and still maintained a 365-day calving interval. When I did a search on the AGA website and looked for Balancer bulls with WW and YW EPDs better than MBCC Susie 6J, I found only five. Of those bulls, zero have a $Cow value better than top 35% and zero have a stayability better than 45%. This female balances growth and female production better than any animal in the entire Balancer breed. I am selling half interest and full possession of this open female. The buyer will have the option to either take her first or second calf and then we will alternate ownership every other calf with MBCC paying $400/year for every year that MBCC Susie 6J is productive. All flushes will be alternated and owner of flush will pay all expenses. Think of the options with her unmatched growth, carcass, and maternal superiority! Base price for half interest of MBCC Susie 6J is $4,000. Please call me to learn more about this female that could have a tremendous impact on our breed.

We will have approximately 25 more open heifers for sale at our open house and sale. We normally list these heifers in the sale catalog, but this year we have submitted DNA on all of these heifers to better predict their future value to you as replacement females. The DNA test results are not yet back at the time of this catalog printing. All of this information along with explanations of what it all means will be available on our website, www.mwbeefcattle.com, as soon as we have it. We will also have a supplement sheet with the data at the sale.

“I’m too old to buy the wrong bull! That yearling bull that you just bought will be a six-year-old before you have enough daughters in production to know what you really have; you will know calving ease and growth sooner but to really know what you have takes years. I used an Angus bull whose calves had a lot of grow, but he left with the hardest keeping, starve to death in the winter and not breed back in the summer cows you’ve ever seen. I used a Gelbvieh bull that I bought from another breeder; love everything about his calves except about one out of ten of his daughters, as 2-year-olds, have the biggest front teats I’ve ever seen. It will take years to get those genetics out of my herd. When I went to Indiana the first time, I didn’t go to buy a bull but to access a breeding program that for 30 years had practiced the philosophy of “Your cows are supposed to work for you, not the other way around”. That’s what I’ve found; sound useful cattle, no hype or promotion. Mark Hilton, Tom Brooks, and their team are good people with whom to do business. I’ve purchased 11 bulls in 8 years and I plan on being in Indiana again in March.” — JOE MELTON, DVM, HARRISON, ARKANSAS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DISPOSITION SC ORE S Each bull has a disposition score. We consider “3” to be average in docility, “4” is calm/docile and “5” is extremely calm/docile. We rate the bulls like this because we have some customers that want a very tame bull and that would be a “5”. The bulls rated “4” are well above average and will be very acceptable to all but the most discriminating buyer. If you have narrowed your list to 5 bulls that are perfect for your herd, and some rate “4” and others rate “5” for disposition, do not eliminate the “4’s” thinking they are not good enough. We rated the disposition via a combination of Chris’ assessment of being around them every day along with a “chute exit score”. A bull that rates a “4” is calm in the lot, approaches Chris, but won’t let him pet him. He walks out of the chute at a normal walking speed. A “5” allows you to pet him and walks out of the chute for about 10’ and then stops and turns to look at you.

C OW LONGE VIT Y I just read an article that said the average cow in the US is marketed at only 6 years of age. This is horrible. This means that the “average” cow produces exactly 1 calf in her “prime of life.” A beef cow’s prime of life is between 5 and 10 years of age. This is when she is most profitable, and the goal should be to have a herd where most cows make it to 9-10 years of age or more. We have put extreme selection pressure on longevity because it is hugely important to the success of your herd. Purchase an MBCC bull and get longevity bred into the genetics.

HOW TO RE AD AND INTERPRET EPDS Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are 7-9 times more accurate in predicting the performance of a bull’s calves than actual data (like birth and weaning weight) as they consider all ancestors of the bull to predict the performance of his offspring. Our bull buyers have been buying bulls based on EPDs (and phenotypic traits like frame score, great feet and legs, dam’s teat/udder score) for many years and the proof is in the offspring. When you are looking to buy a bull, the first things you should examine are the bull’s genetics and his EPDs. If you are buying a bull for heifers, buy a 5-star calving ease bull. These bulls are guaranteed to be excellent for calving ease on heifers. This is not a guarantee of never having to pull a calf. It is our best tool to predict excellent calving ease on heifers. If you are buying a bull for mature cows, do not even look at the calving

14 | MIDWEST BEEF CATTLE CONSULTANTS

ease direct (CED) or birthweight (BW) EPD. Every bull in the sale is guaranteed to produce very acceptable calving ease on cows. Of course, you will occasionally get a calf that is coming breech or with a leg back and it will need assistance. You will not get a bunch of gigantic calves that have to be pulled due to excessive size on any of our bulls. Remember—low maintenance! Our cattle work for you, not the other way around. When buying a bull for cows, look at the genetics of your cows. If your cows are 75% or more Angus, you want a bull that is at least 25% of another breed like Gelbvieh or Simmental. If your cows are 25% or more Simmental, a Balancer bull is ideal. If 25% or more Gelbvieh, a SimAngus or SimmentalAngus-Gelbvieh-Hereford may be what you need. We are glad to help you select the best bulls for your cows based on your herd goals. Crossbred cows produce a profit of about $150/cow/year more than a straightbred cow and anything over 75% is a straightbred. Heterosis or hybrid vigor is the only free lunch in the beef business. We have DNA tested every bull in the sale so the accuracy of the EPDs is greatly improved. Instead of one of our bulls having zero progeny produced yet (which none of them have), it is as if these bulls have sired about 20 calves. Imagine the advantage of buying a bull that has already sired 20-30 calves. You will buy with much more confidence regarding calving ease, growth, carcass traits and daughter’s fertility. WW EPD is a trait you should study if you sell calves at weaning while YW EPD is the best indicator of growth if you sell cattle to slaughter. Marbling is another trait of importance if you sell slaughter cattle or freezer beef. Milk EPD is one of those traits where too much can be a negative. If you have ample forage nearly every year, then a high milk EPD bull is fine. If this is not the case, select a bull that we have rated 5 stars for females. If a bull ranks 4 stars, this is because his milk EPD is in the top 10% of the breed or his frame size is over 6.5. For most herds, we do not want bigger cows. You can find much more information on EPDs on the web. The bottom line is we really want you to call us before you purchase one of our bulls. Our goal is for you to get the best bull for your herd goals.

GENOMIC EPD s Over the past few years, the technology of using an animal’s DNA to predict its future production has become more reliable. Every bull in the sale has genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs). A tissue sample was sent to the lab and their DNA was analyzed to more accurately predict their EPDs. Some animals did not keep their testicles due to this information and I say, “better to know now rather than later.” The number one reason we do this is to give you more confidence in buying a 5-star calving ease bull. Having genomic-enhanced EPDs improves the accuracy of the EPD and allows you to have greater confidence in the producing ability of that animal. For example, a bull with GE EPDs is equal in confidence/accuracy on calving ease to a bull that has sired 26 calves! That is huge when it comes to buying a yearling bull to use on heifers.

BULL WARR ANT Y We have initiated a warranty program for our bull buyers. This warranty covers all causes of loss of use and death except for negligence. You have made an investment in your bull and we will provide 6 months of coverage on your bull commencing on the date of purchase. Cost is 5% of the purchase price of the bull. If you need to collect on this warranty, we will either supply a comparable replacement bull or find you a suitable loaner bull to finish out the breeding season. If the warranty needs to be fulfilled near the end of the breeding season, we will either take the bull back and issue you a credit for a future bull purchase or have you market the bull and keep the salvage value and issue a credit for the balance. We appreciate the trust you place in us to add a bull with good disposition, good feet and leg structure that is fertile to your herd. If your bull fails to get cows pregnant or has a heritable foot/leg issue, those problems do not need a bull warranty. Those problems are on us and we will continue to cover these issues as we have always done. We hope no one ever has to collect on this warranty, but we all know that things can happen. We wanted to offer a warranty at a small cost to help in case of a major injury or death. If you would like the warranty, just tell Denise or Janice as you pay for your bull.

Angle right on to Binford Road and go 1.3 miles to farm on left. It is just past the stop sign.
