WELC OME Thank you for attending our 4th Annual Educational Seminar and Fall Bull and Female Sale. Our goal is to produce cattle the way you do. Even though we have seedstock herds, we treat our cattle like commercial cows. They must calve every year right on schedule or they go to market. If we pamper our cattle and you don’t, then they fall apart for you. We have been stacking pedigrees for calving ease, calf vigor at birth, excellent growth, moderate frame, moderate milk, outstanding fertility, superior carcass, and calm disposition for over 30 years. The daughters of these bulls will leave a positive impact on your herd for generations. Cows will be low maintenance, fertile, calm, profitable and productive. We produce cattle that work for you, not the other way around. Please call one of the MBCC team members before the sale to discuss your beef business goals. Our most important job is to help you select the bulls that best fit your goals. In addition to complete EPDs, the bulls are rated from 1-5 stars on various traits. CALVING EASE: 5 = use on heifers, 4 = use on cows and a few heifers, 3 = use on cows, 2 = steer GROWTH, FEMALES, CARCASS: 5 = elite, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = steer DISPOSITION: 5 = very calm, 4 = calm, 3 = average, 2 = steer

SEMINAR ON

HOW TO GET PAID FOR CARBON CREDITS Mike McCarty from Elanco Animal Health will bring you the latest information on this very important topic. Learning how to navigate this emerging reality that one producer called “The Wild, Wild West” is vitally important to your livestock business. Farmers need to know what to consider to earn carbon credits and what farming practices can give them that. There is much to consider before signing up with a company and Mike will explain some opportunities and some challenges. The seminar starts at 10am EST. Please RSVP to Mark at 765-714-1092 or MBCCBeefTeam@gmail.com to reserve your spot for the seminar and lunch.

E

INCENTIVE S Take $100 off the price of each bull if you haul your bulls on sale day. Hauling can be arranged for the week following the sale. Please call Mark for details. Credit of $10/head up to $100 total on a future purchase if you put calves from one of our bulls into IBEEF or similar retained ownership program AND provide us with gain and carcass data. You reap the carcass premiums and see the superior growth and carcass genetics from MBCC bulls and we get to use the data to improve our herds.

SALE DE SCRIP TION Bulls and females will have their base price listed on the ‘buyer board’ and everyone with interest on a particular animal will place their buyer number next to the animal’s ID. If more than one person has interest in buying the animal, each will have the opportunity to bid by $100 (bulls) or $50 (females) increments until we have a buyer. In addition, you are able to bid using LiveAuctions.TV as an Internet partner. If you are the only person with your number next to an animal’s number and there are no online bids, you have the option to buy the animal at the base price. Placing your number next to an animal’s ID does NOT obligate you to purchase or bid on the animal. There are two unique things that we do to help you get one of your top choice animals for the least money (really!). First, we ask you to rank your top three bull and female choices. You will get an index card when you get your buyer number and you will list your top 3 bulls and top 3 female choices (or top 6 choices if you need 2 or more). Hand index card to Mark before 12:00 noon. We then make the sale order based on the number of producers that have an animal ranked highly. We have all been to sales where we really want the animal that is slated to sell 4th in the sale, but we also like the 2nd one due to sell. The 2nd animal in the sale sells for $100 below the price you were willing to spend and you think “I just got a bargain.” Now the 4th animal is offered for sale and it brings $400 less than you would have paid. Now you are disappointed. That rarely happens here; 89% of our buyers at our 2020 sale took home their first or second choice bull. When a buyer purchases an animal, we ask if they are interested in any others. If they need additional animals, their buyer number stays on the board with the selected bulls or females. If not, we erase their buyer number associated with every other bull or female they marked. This allows you to see most of your competition for the animals on your list. Of course, someone online could bid on an animal that you have marked, but we are confident that most of the bulls and females will be sold to those attending the sale in person. We get many compliments on our unique system. We do not think an auction should prod someone into spending more than they want to spend. We are much more interested in you getting the best animals for your herd goals. We are not interested in squeezing the last dollar out of your bull budget. If you spend $100 less than you anticipated, take your spouse out to dinner!

Bull Sale starts; female sale immediately after bull sale

If you cannot attend the sale, please call one of the MBCC Team members before the sale. We will listen to your goals and help with ranking. The best option is to bid via LiveAuctions.TV. The next best option is to have us bid for you. The last 5 years, we have sold about 70% of the bulls on sale day. If you need quality bulls or females, please join us Saturday, November 4th! If you have questions about bulls and/or females, call us ahead of the sale and please arrive by 9 a.m. We get very busy after 11:00 and we do not want to neglect you. Getting the right animals is a BIG DEAL and we are glad to help.

THE MISSION OF MIDWE ST BEEF CAT TLE C ONSULTANTS Provide practical information and herd improving genetics that will enhance your bottom line. Raising beef cattle should be profitable and enjoyable. When your cattle are easy calving, efficient, vigorous at birth, low maintenance, easy fleshing, high growth, moderate milk, excellent disposition, fertile and produce a superior carcass, you have the combination of traits that put a smile on your face and money in the bank.

Webinar on DNA Testing We are hosting a webinar to discuss DNA testing and how it can benefit your herd on Tuesday, October 24 from 7-8 pm EST. We will be using actual data to help you decide which heifers to keep and which to cull. Send Mark an email to get the link to join or click on or copy and paste the link: https://teams.live. com/meet/9314964348377?p=Rlv8msXs93sZUufa

One of our repeat customers calls it the most honest sale he has ever attended, and we appreciate that compliment. 4 TH ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR AND FALL BULL & FEMALE SALE | 3

208K Wnen we sold out of bulls at our 2023 sale, that left us needing 2 bulls for our herds to use after we bred AI. We really liked this bull for his moderate frame, growth and excellent stayability. He should make some terrific replacement females. Note he is a Gelbvieh-Angus-Simmental composite that will add instant hybrid vigor. Ready to breed 25 cows this fall and 30 next spring.

Customer Comment “In the past we always ran Angus and Charolais bulls on our 115 commercial cows. A few years ago we ran two Angus and two Balancer bulls. We immediately saw a noticeable difference in the Balancer sired calves. They had a distinct look to them and we liked the way they responded to feed. We since have leaned into Balancer and now are running three Balancers and one Gelbvieh bull. In the past we always had a dozen calves that we would beat our

chests and brag about due to the high weaning weights. What we did not brag about was the remaining 85% of our calf crop. They weren’t all bad, they were just all over the board on weaning weights. The real driving factor that brought us to change our bull line up was the uniformity and consistency in weaning weights with the Balancer sired calves. We don’t brag about 750 lb weaning weights on only a few calves these days. We now brag about all the 600 pound plus weaned calves the sale barn is able to group together in order to fetch the top dollar of the day.“ - Brad Ross, Kentucky

Tehama Patriarch may be the most complete Angus bull in the breed. Tremendous calving ease, excellent growth, moderate frame, moderate mature weight, superior marbling and good feet! We are very pleased the Angus breed has a foot score EPD because there are issues. He is also top 30% for all $ indexes.

4 TH ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR AND FALL BULL & FEMALE SALE | 9

REGISTERED BRED BALANCER FEMALES Bred Female Value

A $3500 bred female may seem expensive, but is she really? With current prices a crossbred female returns about ~$275/year more than a straightbred female. Every female selling is a crossbred. If she weans 10 calves, suddenly, she is a bargain. Compare her to the 650# weaned heifer. She produces income a year earlier and 2024 may see the highest prices ever for cattle. The drought out west and high cattle prices have kept cow numbers at the lowest level in recorded history. If the bred female you purchase has a heifer calf and you keep her, now you have 2 females for $1750 each. Let’s say she produces a bull that you DNA test and he is good enough to keep. If he is as good as our average bull we sold in our spring sale, he’s worth $5000 at a year of age. Now the cow is free. Is $3500 too much? Maybe not.

Let’s do some math on the value of the females selling in our sale. Currently a 1400# market animal is worth ~$2500. Shouldn’t a bred female be worth $1000 more than a slaughter animal? The 650# heifers at your farm are currently worth ~$1650. That heifer may not have genomic data to show she is worthy of keeping. If you breed her next spring, she won’t produce any revenue until the fall of 2025, two years from now.

Daughter of a 15 yr old cow that has produced several high selling bulls in past MBCC sales. 2209K DNA test ranks her top 25% in Igenity’s Production Index. Every sale animal has been DNA tested for 15 different traits. This gives you much more confidence in purchasing an animal that truly fits your goals. The registered bulls and females have this data incorporated into their EPDs. All commercial females have a maternal index. This index measures important traits like calving ease, growth, feed efficiency, fertility, stayability, and mature size. A female with an index of 100 is average and an index of 110 would be 10% above average.

Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants, LLC started as a business to help beef producers have a healthier herd and a more profitable beef business. As the business grew, we saw the need to offer genetics that REALLY worked for our producers and not the other way around. Our clients were frustrated with bulls that went to market at 3 or 4 years of age due to bad feet. They saw their cows become much too big and their feed cost skyrocketed.

4 TH ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR AND FALL BULL & FEMALE SALE | 15

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION D I S POSITION SC ORE S Each bull has a disposition score. We consider “3” to be average in docility, “4” is calm/docile and “5” is extremely calm/docile. We rate the bulls like this because we have some customers that want a very tame bull and that would be a “5”. The bulls rated “4” are well above average and will be very acceptable to all but the most discriminating buyers. If you have narrowed your list to 5 bulls that are perfect for your herd, and some rate “4” and others rate “5” for disposition, do not eliminate the “4’s” thinking they are not good enough. We rated the disposition via a combination of Chris’ assessment of being around them every day along with a “chute exit score”. A bull that rates a “4” is calm in the lot, approaches Chris, but won’t let him pet him. He walks out of the chute at a normal walking speed. A “5” allows you to pet him and walks out of the chute for about 10’ and then stops and turns to look at you.

HO W TO R E A D A N D I N T E RP RET EPDS Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are 7-9 times more accurate in predicting the performance of a bull’s calves than actual data (like birth and weaning weight) as they consider all ancestors of the bull to predict the performance of his offspring. Our bull buyers have been buying bulls based on EPDs (and phenotypic traits like frame score, great feet and legs, dam’s teat/udder score) for many years and the proof is in the offspring. Before you purchase a bull, the first things you should examine are the bull’s genetics and his EPDs. If you are buying a bull for heifers, buy a 5-star calving ease bull. These bulls are guaranteed to be excellent for calving ease on heifers. This is not a guarantee of never having to pull a calf. It is our best tool to predict excellent calving ease on heifers. If you are buying a bull for mature cows, do not even look at the calving ease direct (CED) or birthweight (BW) EPD. Every bull in the sale is guaranteed to produce very acceptable calving ease on cows. Of course, you will occasionally get a calf that is coming breech or with a leg back and it will need assistance. You will not get a bunch of gigantic calves that have to be pulled due to excessive size on any of our bulls. Remember—low maintenance! Our cattle work for you, not the other way around. When buying a bull for cows, look at the genetics of your cows. If your cows are 75% or more Angus, you want a bull that is at least 25% of another breed like Gelbvieh or Simmental. If your cows are 25% or more Simmental, a Balancer bull is ideal. If 25% or more Gelbvieh, a SimAngus, South Devon composite or Hereford-Simmental composite may be what you need. We are glad to help you select the best bulls 16 | MIDWEST BEEF CATTLE CONSULTANTS

for your cows based on your herd goals. Crossbred cows produce a profit of over $300/cow/year more than a straightbred cow at today›s pricesand anything over 75% is a straightbred. Heterosis or hybrid vigor is the only free lunch in the beef business. We have DNA tested every bull and female in the sale so the accuracy of the EPDs is greatly improved. Instead of one of our bulls having sired zero calves, it is as if these bulls have sired 20-30 calves. Imagine the advantage of buying a bull that has already sired 20-30 calves. You will buy with much more confidence regarding calving ease, growth, carcass traits and daughter’s fertility. All females that scored poorly on their DNA test have been put in the feedlot. The females in this sale are replacement quality females. WW EPD is a trait you should study if you sell calves at weaning while YW EPD is the best indicator of growth if you sell cattle to slaughter. Marbling is another trait of importance if you sell slaughter cattle or freezer beef. Milk EPD is one of those traits where too much can be a negative. If you have ample forage nearly every year, then a high milk EPD bull is fine. If this is not the case, select a bull that we have rated 5 stars for females. If a bull ranks 4 stars, this is because his milk EPD is in the top 10% of the breed or his frame size is over 6.5. For most herds, we do not want bigger cows. You can find much more information on EPDs on the web. The bottom line is we really want you to call us before you purchase one of our bulls. Our goal is for you to get the best bulls and females for your herd goals.

FEM ALE FOC U S We feel that the cow should be the focus of the beef business. If you have cows that are docile, fertile, calve unassisted, love their calves, wean off a big, strapping calf and do that for 12 or more years, you have the foundation for a very successful beef business. Add excellent marbling and superior growth and you enhance the ability to add value to your calves by selling as freezer beef or selling on a grid value basis when cattle are finished. All the above traits are our focus and are bred into our cattle. We think selecting a new herdsire is a really big deal.

PRODUCER PROFILE WESS AND MARY BOOKER LAWRENCEBURG, IN

and attend meetings so I could improve my herd. We started out breeding them Hereford and I knew I needed to crossbreed, so I bought a LimFlex bull. That was an improvement in some areas, but the calves did not finish out soon enough. I knew MBCC raised Gelbvieh and Balancers so I asked him if they thought they would work well for me.” “We sell all our beef as freezer beef and have done this for 40 years. I liked the improved growth and carcass quality of the Balancer sired cattle. I even bought a few Balancer females and that worked out well. The Balancer cattle are very docile, and I really appreciate that. “ “We keep back a few heifers, but I also buy a few. I want to see if my genetics are stacking up to those that I buy. I started bugging Mark and Chris many years ago about DNA testing our replacement heifers and a few years ago they finally agreed it was worth the investment. DNA testing really helps us keep the best of the best replacements.”

Wess “grew up in a livestock truck” helping his father haul livestock in SE Indiana and SW Ohio. “My earliest recollection of this was when I was about 3 or 4 years old. By the time I was 8, my parents had to make me go to bed early so I could get up at 3am to help dad haul. I knew there was a donut stop after we dropped off the livestock, so I always stayed awake for that, but after that it was time for a nap.” Starting his own trucking business seemed like a natural fit and Wess continued in that business for 40 years. Mary and Wess are first generation farmers and purchased their current farm in 1971. “It came with a few Hereford cows, so we started in the cattle business. We didn’t know much, but I tried to read all I could

Wess is the kind of producer that isn’t afraid to try something new. Over the years he has started rotationally grazing, breeding AI, building winter feed pads to eliminate mud, using concrete bunks to feed cows (he is 100% fall calving) and has a bull rental business. He said he “hates to see a bull standing around costing me money”. In August, Wess and Mary were awarded the River Friendly Farmer Award at the Indiana State Fair. This honors farmers who do an outstanding job of protecting their lakes, and streams through their everyday conservation management practices on the farm. “My goal is to keep buying better and better bulls. I want to keep improving my herd each year and the MBCC bulls have allowed me to do that. I have a low-maintenance cow herd. I want calm bulls that improve my herd and my freezer beef customers love our beef.” Editor’s note: Wess has helped many producers start or improve their freezer beef business. He is happy to help you if that is a goal of yours. Call Wess at 812-5372509.

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN OR PREC ONDITION YOUR CALVE S? With calves at record high prices, the temptation to sell calves right off the cow this fall is well . . . . . tempting. I have been analyzing beef cow-calf financial records for over 30 years and this fall ranks as the number 1 year in the past 30 years to keep your calves for at least 45 days and sell as fully preconditioned calves. While feed prices are above average, calf prices are way above average. This equates to a low cost of gain compared to the added value you will receive for the additional pounds of calf if you feed your calves after weaning for at least 45 days.

I checked the USDA feeder calf price data for several states in our area and calves that are verified to be preconditioned (weaned 45+ days and received all necessary vaccinations) are selling at $7-20/cwt over commodity (unknown history) calves. At $10/cwt premium, that is an additional $62.50 on your 625# calf! 2023 is the “no-brainer” year to keep your calves for at least 45 days post weaning to add and capture an even larger paycheck for your calves. If you need help developing a postweaning ration, contact your nutritionist, extension educator, herd health veterinarian, or feed specialist. Many of these experts are happy to help you.

I developed a preconditioning ration for a herd recently and the feed cost was under $0.90/pound of gain! The producer has above average grass/legume hay and corn. He also has access to dry distiller’s grain, soy hulls and a vitamin/mineral mix with Rumensin. With calves selling for over $225/cwt., this is a tremendous opportunity to add value to your calves. In this herd, the owner should realize an additional profit of over $200/calf for weaning and feeding the calf for 45 days! (We also included a Component TE-G with Tylan implant that returned $35.) When I read articles on the profitability of preconditioning calves, I rarely see anything about the amount of shrink in calves sold right off the cow (not weaned) vs. those that have been on feed for ~45 days. An unweaned calf shrinks about 7%, so a 500# calf will lose about 35# during transit to the feeder auction. A calf that has been on feed for ~45 days will only shrink 3%. We feel it is very doable to add 125# in 45 days (2.8#/day), so the shrink on this 625# calf is only 19#. That 16 extra pounds (at $2.00/ pound with the price slide) is worth $32/calf extra just in less shrink.

TERMS & C ONDITIONS

BULL WARR ANT Y

TERMS: Cash or Check and settlement must be made before cattle leave the sale facility. All cattle sell under the terms and conditions of the American Gelbvieh Association.

We offer a warranty program for our bull buyers. This warranty covers all causes of loss of use and death except for negligence. You have made an investment in your bull and we will provide 6 months of coverage on your bull commencing on the date of purchase. Cost is 5% of the purchase price of the bull. If you need to collect on this warranty, we will either supply a comparable replacement bull or find you a suitable loaner bull to finish out the breeding season. If the warranty needs to be fulfilled near the end of the breeding season, we will either take the bull back and issue you a credit for a future bull purchase or have you market the bull and keep the salvage value and issue a credit for the balance.

HEALTH INFORMATION:All cattle sell with a valid health certificate that will allow shipment anywhere in the Continental United States. REGISTRATION PAPERS: All papers on registered animals selling are in order and will be transferred to the new owner. Papers will be mailed by the AGA and should be to the new owner within 30 days. EPDS: All EPDs on registered bulls are provided by the American Gelbvieh Association and are current at printing of the sale book. LIABILITY: All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. Midwest Beef Cattle Consultants, LLC; M5 Family Farms; M5 Ag Services, LLC; Brooks Farms, Inc./Blue Ridge Farms; Wirth Farms and BJ Riedie assume no liability for accidents, theft, or damages occurring at the sale facility.

We appreciate the trust you place in us to add a bull with good disposition, good feet and leg structure that is fertile to your herd. If your bull fails to get cows pregnant or has a heritable foot/leg issue, those problems do not need a bull warranty. Those problems are on us and we will continue to cover these issues as we have always done. We hope no one ever has to collect on this warranty, but we all know that things can happen. We wanted to offer a warranty at a small cost to help in case of a major injury or death. If you would like the warranty, just tell Denise or Janice as you pay for your bull.
