Welcome We would like to welcome you to our 16th annual Open House and Private Treaty Kickoff Sale. We hope this finds you all doing well and looking forward to a rewarding and prosperous year in 2014. A big thanks to all our past customers, we really do appreciate your trust and interest in our program. One thing about the farming and ranching business is that every year is different. The corn prices have dropped considerablely from where they were a year ago and the cattle prices keep rising. The steer mates to the bulls we are offering brought just over $1,500 through the sale barn. This is a good time to be in the beef business and should be for years to come. This year we will be offering 33 yearling bulls, purebreds and balancers, red and black (18 homozygous black). The bulls have performed real well for us this year, summered on the dry pastures with no creep and then on a high roughage diet since weaning. The bulls will all be semen tested by Dr. Wulf of the Red Cloud Animal Health and will carry a first breeding season guarantee. First Breeding Season Guarantee Buyers of all bulls injured during the first breeding season, will have credit at the next sale at the value of the purchase price minus salvage value. Contact MLM Gelbvieh promptly so the decision to return the bull to MLM Gelbvieh or to sell the bull by the buyer may be made. Breeding season is defined as the "90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls." In the event of death of a bull during the first breeding season, a credit of 50% of the sale price will be applied at the next sale for a bull.

• When you have made your selections of bulls (prior to 1:00 p.m.) place your buyer’s number on the card located on the pen for that lot or lots. • At 1:00 p.m., the bulls with more than one buyer’s number will be decided by private auction. The bulls with the most buyer numbers will be bid off first. The bidders will be announced. • A deck of cards will be used to determine the order of bidding. Each bidder will select a card. The one with the highest card will own the bull IF the other bidders do not raise the bid on the base price. The person with the next highest card has the option to raise the price by $50.00 if they desire. Every card holder will have a chance to raise the bid. This will continue until only one buyer remains, giving every buyer the same equal opportunity to buy any bull we have to offer. • The unsuccessful bidders will have a few minutes to put their number on any other available bull. The IGENITY® Profile: The IGENITY® provides the beef industry with the most comprehensive genetic profile of multiple traits of economic importance. The insights gained from an IGENITY® profile help producers make more confident selection, management and marketing decisions. The IGENITY® profile includes multiple-marker analyses for traits such as: Tenderness, Marbling, Quality grade, Yield grade, Hot carcass weight, Fat thickness, Ribeye area, Heifer pregnancy rate, Stayability, Calving ease and Docility. Profile Score Advantages: To assist cattle producers in understanding the value of DNA technology, IGENITY® has developed a scoring system for each trait using a scale of 1 to 10. Higher values are not necessarily better-they simply indicate that the animal has the potential for more of that trait. Marbling Score: Higher scores from IGENITY® for marbling equal greater genetic potential for marbling. In a group of animals with a score from IGENITY® of 10 for marbling, the average marbling score can be expected to be 161 points greater than animals with a score of 1. Yearling Bulls EPD DEFINITIONS IN THIS CATALOG Calving Ease Direct (CE): An EPD that is expressed as a ratio, with a higher ratio representing better (easier) calving ease. This value represents the direct influence a sire has on calving ease. Only first-calf heifer data is included. Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference, in pounds for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Gelbvieh breeder recognized for outstanding productivity

MLM Gelbvieh Marlin Meyer Superior, Neb. was recently recognized by the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) as the owner of 26 Gelbvieh/Balancer cow(s) exhibiting the consistent maternal efficiency typical of "The Continental Breed of Choice." The AGA has designated these outstanding beef females as Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction. Maternal productivity plays a major role in profitable beef production, as nearly 60 percent of the cost of producing a pound of beef can be attributed to the cow herd. Considerable economic research has demonstrated that fertility and calving ease followed by milk, growth and carcass cutability have the biggest influence on profit in a retained ownership (conception to carcass) system. Commercial cattlemen agree that Gelbvieh genetics have strong maternal attributes with the added benefits of fast growth and carcass cutability. Given the increased emphasis on efficient beef production, the Gelbvieh breed is in an excellent position to increase its influence on the beef industry. The title "Dam of Merit" recognizes cows that meet strict selection criteria including early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals, and above-average weaning weights on at least three calves. Of the 39,516 active cows in the Gelbvieh breed, only 3.6 percent qualify for Dam of Merit. The "Dam of Distinction" honor recognizes cows that meet the same high standards for superior, long-term productivity with at least eight calves. Just 0.8 percent of all active Gelbvieh/Balancer cows qualify for this elite group. New Generation AGA EPDs The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2014 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.

Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDs The true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.

Gelbvieh and Balancer Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus

Growth Traits are More Reliable

The new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW) and carcass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.

Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.

Carcass Traits are Standardized

Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology

In recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to ageadjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-tofinish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable. For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal more unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.
