THE MAGNIFICENT GELBVIEH-INFLUENCED FEMALE by Lori Maude, AGA President
T
his issue of Gelbvieh World recognizes the owners of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction. The Gelbvieh breed has long been known for its maternal efficiency and making those high-producing cows. That maternal strength was the thing that kept us using Gelbvieh and Balancer® genetics in our commercial cowherd. When our Gelbvieh-influenced first calf heifers weaned calves equal to our black-baldy mature cows, we knew we were on to something. If you were to ask breeders who added Gelbvieh to their herds in the 1980s their motivation, many would say it was work that the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) in Clay Center, Nebraska, did comparing breeds. Gelbvieh led the way in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed and still does. Anyone who has been through a drought and had to haul water to those cows has seen the advantage of a smaller mature weight cow. We hauled water for two summers, not exactly the most fun way to spend a summer, but we saw first-hand the consumption differences for smaller mature weight cows. The smaller-framed cows still raised heavy calves, but they did it on less inputs than our larger cows.
As a board of directors, we focused our five-year strategic plan around sustainability and the maternal strength of the breed. While the research continues to answer how we numerically measure sustainability, the beef industry has outlined several practices that help improve the sustainability of the beef industry and reduce our carbon footprint. For cow-calf operations, practices that help us efficiently raise more pounds of beef per acre are more sustainable. One way to most quickly improve the sustainability of the beef industry is to improve the reproductive efficiency of the cowherd through improved pregnancy rates and shortened calving seasons. This helps us raise more beef from the same number of cows on the same acreage. My recommendation is always to add a little Gelbvieh to the mix on the cow side to improve pregnancy rates. The fertility of the breed excels, even in challenging environmental conditions. You combine Gelbvieh fertility with synchronization protocols and improved herd health management, you are well on your way to producing more beef on the same acres and being part of a sustainable beef industry.
We have a big opportunity as areas of the country begin rebuilding after droughts and other natural disasters forced cowherd reductions and dispersions. As producers begin looking for females to rebuild those herds, we want those to be Gelbvieh-influenced cows. We need to not only tell the maternal efficiency side of our breed but combine it with the sustainable cow story. This is also a time that we can help our bull customers to not just ‘sell’ their replacement heifers but help them ‘market’ those heifers as part of a sustainable beef industry through improved fertility, increased pounds of calf weaned and longevity in the cowherd.F

PREPARATION PAYS IN DNA TESTING
NEW MEMBERS
DNA testing season is upon us. The influx of samples sent to the lab happens around this time every year, so it’s best for all of us to prepare. Please be sure to allow sufficient time between DNA sample submission and the time in which results are needed. Currently, DNA results are expected to take four to six weeks from the time when the samples are received at the lab.
The AGA would like to welcome new members to the AGA and AGJA!
Neogen, the DNA laboratory used by AGA, strongly encourages members to mail samples via a service that provides a tracking number.. The cost of secured postage is expensive but the cost of a lost package or one that is delayed by 2-3 weeks is less than ideal.

Also, keep in mind that genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs), the highlighted EPDs on the Animal Detail Screen within the AGA Online Registry Service, can take up to two weeks after DNA test results are completed to generate. The timing of GE-EPDs is dependent on when the DNA test is completed in relation to when data will be pulled for the next weekly evaluation. Please contact the AGA office at 303.465.2333 for any questions regarding DNA testing.

REGISTRY TIPS N’ TRICKS
MISSING CALF RECORDS: ONE STOP PROGENY RECORDING SHOP
I
by Jake W. Renner, M.S.
t is inevitable with so many moving parts to the farming operation that records get forgotten or not entered at all. Often, it’s simply a matter of getting work done on the calves born within the calendar year, missing a few details, and forgetting to go back later to enter that data. The AGA Online Registry Service offers a one-stop shop to find which cows are still missing calf records for the current year, along with calf records missing weaning data. On average, 24% of the assessed females go unreported each year. Between 2020-2022, 1-99 head herds averaged 29% unreported, and 100-500+ head herds averaged 22% unreported. Every female should have a record, whether it is a calf recorded or a reason code for no calf.
WHERE CAN I FIND THE NO PROGENY SCREEN? To locate the No Progeny screen, you will navigate to the “Herd Mgmt” tab on the registry and then to your inventory screen. You’ll notice a list of horizontal tabs at the top of the screen. For many, this is a familiar screen as it
is home to the “Assessment-Age” Tab where herd assessments are placed on females annually before the March 15 deadline. But look just to the right of the Assessment-Age tab and locate the “No Progeny” tab. From this tab, you’ll find a list of females that have no calf data reported as well as 4. If you selected the disposal icon any missing/incomplete weaning data on on accident, simply select “Cancel” calves from the previous year located at beside the dropdown menu. the bottom. Pay close attention to the year to which the chart is referring. Why are these graphs here? The main goal of inventory-based programs is the collection of usable un-biased performance data. You can use these graphs to monitor the data contributions you are providing to the association. To keep our data as honest and accurate as possible, please record all calves born throughout the year. The use of disposal codes is fundamental to the practicality and complete process of total herd reporting lending itself as a resource that the producer can utilize for future years. If you have any questions about recording calves, assessing females, or entering data into the registry please call the office at 303.465.2333 or email registry@gelbvieh. org and we would be more than happy to assist you.F

JUNIOR CONNECTION
JUNIOR UTILIZATION OF THE 53RD ANNUAL AMERICAN GELBVIEH ASSOCIATION NATIONAL CONVENTION by Lily Judd, AGJA Vice President of Leadership Development
T
he 53rd Annual American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) National Convention will be here in a few weeks! No doubt many of us juniors have heard about it, but it is an adult-focused event, what is in it for us? The convention serves as a great time to network with breeders, get an insight into where the AGA stands within the industry, learn about the beef industry as a whole, and maybe even catch up with some fellow juniors, too. We all know how hard it is to get everyone in the same place at the same time, but the annual convention is an outlet that can do just that. This works as a great time to network, not only from breeder to breeder but also from juniors to breeders as well. This can take the form of meeting breeders from your own state or branching out and meeting many from several different states. This is a chance to equip yourself with connections you can use throughout your lifetime, and it can simply start with a handshake. This handshake could lead to you understanding more about another operation or gaining interest
in an upcoming sale of theirs. Use the opportunity to its fullest potential. One of the main ideas behind the convention is to inform the breeders where we stand as a breed either relative to other breeds or where we stand in the beef industry. This could include what we are trying to accomplish as a breed but also how we should implement ideas that the industry is consumed with. This can allow you to gain knowledge about our breed so you can help be an advocate for Gelbvieh wherever you go. While it is important to know what is going on within our breed, it is also important to be up to date on a few ideas that are buzzing within the entire beef industry as well. These ideas may or may not be currently used by our breed but are something that as producers we need to be informed about. Especially as these may become very important down the road as either our customers will be using them in their programs or as a breed, we will be implementing them to stay relevant in the industry. Lastly, you will never be the only junior there! There are always a few
representatives from the junior board who would love to see you at the convention. Plus, there are likely to be a few other junior members in general attendance as well. If you have not met them before, use this opportunity while we are not running around between contests and cattle to make a new friend. This way when junior nationals do roll around you have even more friends to make the week so memorable. While the annual convention may be more directed towards the adult membership, there are still highlights to gain as a junior. You can make new connections with breeders that are from across the nation, and it can simply start with a handshake. You can become informed about what the AGA is currently doing and where we are headed as a breed. Do not miss out on being caught up to date on what new trends are flooding the industry and how they could become beneficial to us down the road. Finally, do not think you will be the only junior member in attendance, as there will always be some junior board representatives who would be happy to see you.F

Here Comes Goodbye by MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

Producers should look at each female’s feet and legs and evaluate them for structural soundness. If she has bad feet and legs, she will be less efficient in production and may struggle to rotate pastures as she ages, thus leading to a lower body condition score and less milk production. Udder and teat scores are important as large udders and teats can require extra labor in helping a new calf with nursing in the first few days. Sandy Johnson, Kansas State University Additionally, body condition scores play Northwest Research and Extension a large role in fertility and the weaning Center professor and extension specialist, weights of her calves. Evaluating body provided insights into various factors a condition scores and mature weights can beef producer can use to make the correct allow a producer to cull cows that require culling decisions for their herd. too many inputs compared to available resources. ust like goodbyes, culling decisions are never easy. There is no right or wrong way to cull for the beef industry, it is truly based on each herd individually. While the current climate of the United States beef industry is unique in the fact the 2023 cowherd is the smallest cowherd since the 1960s, culling must still take place to keep the industry efficient and sustainable.
PREGNANCY DIAGNOSIS
Every female that remains in the herd should be bred. In a profit-oriented cowcalf operation, each female must produce and wean a calf to generate revenue and improve the operation’s bottom line. Feeding an open female based on past performance is expensive and impacts herd profitability.
BREEDING SEASON LENGTH After a female has been confirmed bred, it’s helpful to estimate when she got pregnant if pregnancy diagnosis occurs early enough to stage pregnancies. An ideal calving season is 60 days. If there are females who are bred but expected to calve over 30 days behind the rest of the herd, it would be in the producer’s best interest to market this female. While this may seem minor now, a late calving cow will more than likely never be an early calver again without extra effort such as the use of an estrous synchronization protocol.
PHENOTYPE A bred female is important for profitability; however, she must be structurally sound to stay productive.
16 | GELBVIEH WORLD
DOCILITY Docile females are ideal as they reduce the risks of injury and are much easier to handle. Females who are calm make calving season, pasture rotations and weaning much more efficient as it can be a low-stress environment. Females who are calm when being handled tend to be more fertile. Research has shown, females who were scored as most nervous in a squeeze chute and left the chute more quickly had elevated cortisol and decreased fertility compared to calmer females. Docility significantly impacts fertility thus, culling flighty females can improve herd calving rates.
AGE There is no one answer on the correct age to cull a cow. Most females are not profitable until they reach six to eight years of age. She probably still has a few productive years ahead, but with increased age comes increased risk. Cull cows are typically 15-20% of a producer’s income. One approach is to sell these females when their value is still relatively high. While a cow may produce nearly as well at 15 as she did at eight, producers
need to factor in the increased risk of unsoundness or increased likelihood of being open as cows age with cow depreciation costs.
FORAGE AVAILABILITY While most of the country has seen more rain this year, than in those past, other parts have still not recovered from drought. Maintaining a herd size relative to forage availability is an essential component of long-term sustainability. If a producer does not have the forage, and cost to replace it is too high, culling is needed to ensure adequate nutrition for the rest of the herd. Once old and open cows have been culled, good records on individual cow performance and genomic tests can be valuable if deeper cuts are needed.
PRODUCTION GOALS Unique to each operation is the goals of the producer. Is the producer raising calves to sell at weaning or producing calves to sell as replacement heifers? Having a clear goal for the operation allows culling decisions to be more effective as producers are culling cows and choosing to not keep replacements from females who produce calves that aren’t meeting their goals. With the current strong beef cattle market, culling may be limited. Other producers may have culled hard in response to drought and are striving to regrow their herd. Each producer must determine what culling factors are absolute and which factors can be of less importance in their unique time. However, culling must happen and it’s never easy to say goodbye to once great cows.F

2022 MANSASK PUREBRED BREEDER OF THE YEAR
Dams of Dominance Recognizing the year’s top maternal influences: Annual Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction Honors
G
elbvieh and Balancer® females offer maternal superiority and moderate mature weights, quiet dispositions, added fertility and greater longevity; truly, making them the maternal breed of choice. This year, as in decades past, AGA recognizes the top performing Gelbvieh and Balancer females and the AGA members who breed and own them through the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program. The Dam of Merit honor recognizes cows that meet strict selection criteria including early puberty and conception, regular calving intervals and above average weaning weights on at least three calves. Of the 34,861 cows assessed in 2022, only 5.32% qualify for this elite group.
The Dam of Distinction award recognizes cows that meet the same high standards, in addition to exhibiting superior, long-term productivity with at least eight calves. Just over 1% of all the active Gelbvieh and Balancer cows qualify for this elite group. To celebrate the accomplishments of our members, we’ve gathered the top 10 states ranked by the combined total of Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction awards, as well as the top 20 owners, top 20 breeders and a detailed list, sorted by state, of those members who own Dams of Merit and/or Dams of Distinction honorees.F

AGA Hall of Fame Inductees for 2024
T
he American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) will again recognize a dedicated member who has been an influential figure in the Gelbvieh breed. The 2024 AGA Hall of Fame inductees are Mark and Patty Goes of Odell, Nebraska. The Goes will be presented with the award at the awards banquet during the 53rd Annual AGA National Convention, which will take place November 30, 2023, at the Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capital District, in Omaha, Nebraska. In his professional career, Goes served as an instructor at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska. During his tenure, he started a Gelbvieh and Balancer® herd at the college and advocated for the breed among students by taking them to shows and sales. Many of his students have started their own Gelbvieh and Balancer herds and become members of the AGA.
Gelbvieh Association, serves as an active committee member, and was the first president of the American Gelbvieh Foundation where he currently serves as the vice president. Additionally, Goes has served in multiple positions to develop the strategic direction of many industry-leading organizations.
Goes continued youth education outside of the classroom by implementing the live carcass evaluation contest at the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) Junior Classic. He procured the cattle, scheduled harvest slots and explained the carcass results to the contestants. Through the creation of this contest, Goes helped connect live cattle production to the value of end-product merit and consumer demand.
“While I’ve always known Mark is a selfless individual, it has become even more obvious while serving on the AGF board with him,” said Tanner Aherin. “When an important decision is to be made, Mark is someone who wants to vet all the outcomes and how they might impact each breeder across the country – never making himself the priority. Mark is willing to challenge the group to ensure the right decision is made that is most beneficial for all people involved in the Gelbvieh breed.”
Goes has served in many leadership positions throughout the beef industry. Goes is a past president of the American

GENOMICS: A More with Less Approach to Herd Management by LAURA HANDKE
I
n today’s fast-moving beef industry, there is no shortage of opportunities to push the limits of production and efficiency. And the differentiator for many cow-calf and seedstock operations is the innovation they use to meet the demands of their customers faster and more efficiently. Genomics sets producers, both commercial and seedstock, up to do just that. The tool shortens the generational intervals needed to collect data, move a herd forward, and, ultimately, deliver greater value to the industry through the expression of selected traits. But what is genomics? How does it work? And, most importantly, how can producers find value in the tool? Dr. Matt Spangler, beef genetics specialist for University of Nebraska–Lincoln, shared his answers, research, and insights with attendees of an American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) sponsored genomics educational webinar on September 6, 2023. Breaking the science down to the basics, Spangler shared that it’s important to be able to talk the talk, to avoid confusion, kicking off the webinar with the definitions of the terms commonly used in genomics. “The most confusing things in genomics are all the words we toss around as if everyone knows what we’re talking about,” he told attendees. Genomics, he shared, is a newer branch of biotechnology that has taken what we know about genetics and molecular biology and advanced both fields, due to the knowledge we have gained of the genome sequence of different species.
40 | GELBVIEH WORLD
Today, genomics is applicable to different species and focuses on the generation of data, the organization of data, and the subsequent application of those data. Genomics is a new source of data, not the only source of data, he clarified. Based on and leveraging kinship— the backbone of genetic evaluation – EPDs utilize records from relatives and the individual animal. The application of genomics allows for those data to be proportionally weighted to improve prediction and shorten generation intervals. Spangler explains, “If you think about genomics holistically, what we are really doing is weighting these sources of information. You can think about a big selection index where the record of every relative of an individual is being weighted proportionally to how closely they are related to the animal in question. And those records are also weighted by how heritable they are.” Because not all data are equally informative, a grandparent is not as informative as a record on a parent because there’s greater distance in terms of kinships.
A DECISION-MAKING TOOL A practical application of genomics, across the cow-calf sector, is the ability to distinguish between sires in a multi-sire pasture. Genomics take the guesswork out of assigning sires to calves and identifying artificial insemination errors. “In really big, multi-sire pastures, you can observe quite a bit of variation in the number of calves sired. And, in fact, if
you treat the count of calves sired by a bull as a trait, the heritability is close to 20%, we’ve found,” Spangler said. “What testing or discovery does is compare a calf ’s genotypes to all possible sires and dams.” While assigning parentage is a common application, genomics holds the potential to provide far greater value. Genomics is also a tool producers can use to increase the uniformity of their calf crop. Spangler notes that being more closely related doesn’t necessarily mean that uniformity will be improved because the two half-siblings could be dramatically different in their genetic potential for a number of traits. Genomics identifies disparities and similarities and allows a producer to dial in on what they are looking for to meet their uniformity goals. “Genomics is meant to help you make decisions. If you do it after the decision’s already been made, you won’t get the same ROI. If you take a trait, such as marbling, and look at the IGS value that says we can genotype a non-parent bull and increase the accuracy of his EPD to the same level as if he’d already sired eight calves—before a bull’s even been turned out on cows. I think that’s pretty phenomenal,” he shared. Genomics have long been utilized by the dairy industry, helping the industry learn which bulls delivered the economic benefits they need to position against the ultra-slim milk market. “It takes a long time before dairy heifers go into lactation, so it stands to reason that it would take a long time to learn

genotyping selected animals as you put the sale catalog together, you’re really doing yourself a disservice and you’re certainly doing the breed a disservice because that strategy decreases the amount of data that can be used to make genomically-enhanced EPDs even better,” he told the group. “Finally, if you’re not testing females, that makes it hard to have really impactful genomic predictions for fertility traits.”
“If you’re using genomics for selection, you should be genotyping every calf, the bulls and the heifers and I would also encourage you to genotype the deads because it is an efficient way to monitor for emerging genetic defects. If you’re only using genomics for marketing, only
Additionally, genomics have shed light on novel traits. Traits Spangler called out as influencing disease susceptibility, male and female fertility, feed efficiency, and even the microbiome in terms of the health properties of the finished meat product. Genomics and the implications

the application delivers will continually allow producers to do less with more while boosting quality. Spangler closed the webinar with a message of encouragement for attendees: “The study of genetics and more specifically genetic evaluation of beef cattle will continue to make incremental steps to make these tools even more accurate. And as the tools evolve and become more accurate, the risk of not using them becomes even greater. GETTING IT RIGHT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE: CO NTEMP O R ARY G RO U PIN G FO R B E E F C AT T L E G E N E T I C E VA LU AT I O N by DR. BOB WEABER, PH.D. Professor and Head, Eastern Kansas Research and Extension Centers, Kansas State University

he process of analyzing individual performance records and converting them to meaningful predictors of an animal’s genetic merit is a process that has undoubtedly been debated in countless pickup trucks, sale arenas, coffee shops, kitchen tables and most certainly many professors’ offices. In many ways, the genetic evaluation of beef cattle is very complex. However, the basic premise used to compare animals is very simple. The basis on which an animal is evaluated is how it (and/or their progeny and grand-progeny) performed against its contemporaries. In other words, how did the animal perform within its contemporary group? We know that not all the differences in an animal’s performance are related to its genetics. Part of the difference is due to environmental effects. The result of the expression of an animal’s genetics in an environment is an animal’s phenotype. Every performance measure cattle producers take of an animal is a measurement of the animal’s phenotype. For example, we know, and adjust for the fact that the weaning weights of calves born to 2-year-old dams are lighter than the weights recorded for calves born to 5or 6-year-old dams. An individual calf ’s weaning weight is the result of the calf ’s genetics for pre-weaning growth and the environment in which the calf was raised. This environment includes the herd, the year and season it was born, the amount

of milk provided by the calf ’s dam, which was influenced by the amount of grass she ate, the age of the dam, the calf ’s sex, and other effects that would also be experienced by the calf ’s contemporaries.
that have had an equal opportunity to perform.
The contemporary group helps animal geneticists separate genetic differences from environmental effects so that animals are compared on a level playing field. A common technical definition of a contemporary group is “a group of the same breed (not required in multibreed systems such as the IGS multibreed system), born within a specified age range, raised at the same location or in the same herd, of the same sex and managed alike from birth until the time of measurement.” More simply put, a contemporary group is a group of animals
In theory, contemporary grouping is easy, but the application of contemporary grouping in real life can present many challenging decisions. A common error in building contemporary groups is breeders not assigning enough groupings to accommodate calves that have received unequal treatment. Just as damaging, some breeders create too many contemporary groups. Assignments should be as simple as possible while still accounting for major differences in management. A useful method to aid in contemporary grouping is to assign distinct contemporary group codes to
Many breed registries help breeders define correct contemporary groups according to the breed percentage (not required in multi-breed systems), EPDs were designed to predict an animal’s genetic value after environmental sex, calving period and herd, but producers must carefully group animals effects have been removed. Since according to other management and EPDs are calculated on the basis of environmental factors like health and comparisons, it makes sense that we nutrition. Even so, individual breeders must make fair comparisons. In a are ultimately responsible for the accurate sense, we want to compare apples to contemporary grouping of their animals. apples and oranges to oranges. When It is likely that only you know the animals are appropriately grouped with management history of your herd. When contemporaries in terms of similar completing performance data entry management and environment, then differences in performance are likely due forms, consideration should always be given to the management and nutrition of to differences in genetics. Thus, proper the calves and their dams, and then they contemporary grouping is critical for should be grouped accordingly. EPDs to be accurate.
animals that are exceptions to regular management practices. For example, calves that received preferential treatment (cattle being fitted for show, for example) should be placed within their own contemporary group.
calf born in your herd. Incomplete or inaccurate data reduces the reliability of each animal’s EPDs. The preciseness of an animal’s EPDs, particularly animals that have no progeny, depends greatly on an animal’s own performance record.
It is important to note that contemporary groups never increase in size after the calving season is over. A contemporary group may, however, decrease in size. Often, as calves get older the contemporary group will decrease in size due to culling, injury, sickness, death, or assignment to sub-groups that reflect different management treatments. Contemporary groups cannot be recombined once animals have been defined to be members of separate groups.
It is important to report all the calves born on your farm or ranch and their respective weights. Granted reporting all data takes more effort, but the benefits far outweigh the costs. If you do not report all the data, the overall performance records of your operation will not be as accurate as they could be. Every calf should be weighed at birth. No exceptions! Yes, especially weigh the DEAD ones. It is important that both the sire and dam of a dead calf get the credit they deserve. Reporting only the good calves does not identify the poor producing parents. Not only will reporting each calf aid the accurate calculation of EPDs, it will also keep the dam’s production record current. Often breeders will try to economize by only
Reporting complete data is an important part of contemporary grouping that deserves special attention. In order to make EPDs as accurate as possible, it is critical that complete and accurate performance data be submitted on every
sending in data and registering a portion of their calf crop, usually the top end. The practice of only reporting part of the contemporary group data is seriously flawed! It is as important, maybe more important, to identify the bottom end of the genetics and cull them, as it is to identify the top end. Additionally, by not reporting the bottom end of the calves, the top end doesn’t get the credit they truly deserve. Each calf you raise depends on you for a fair comparison relative to its mates. Many producers think it is advantageous to only report the best calves, when in fact it penalizes them. Only you know how your calves have been managed. Make sure your contemporary groupings reflect this knowledge. Some helpful tips for breeders to use in creating contemporary groups are included in the section ‘A Guide to Contemporary Grouping.’F

Use group codes on registration application or performance data submission forms to assign calves to contemporary groups.
2.
Use a unique group code to put a sick or injured calf into a single animal contemporary group if the illness or injury affected the calf ’s performance.
3.
6.
Have progeny from two or more sires in each contemporary group.
7.
When calves are within an appropriate age range for each trait, record yearling weight, height, scrotal circumference, pelvic area, and ultrasound measurements on the same day.
Take weaning weights and measurements on all calves on the same day (when a majority of the calves are between 160 and 250 days of age), including as many calves in each contemporary group as legitimately possible.
8.
If carcass data are to be collected on cull bulls, heifers or steers, report weaning weights on all animals. This data allows the selection of replacement females and bulls to be accounted for in genetic evaluations and helps prevent bias in the predictions.
4.
Weigh all animals in a group before separating them, especially before separating show calves or bulls for a test station.
9.
5.
If the age spread of calves is greater than 90 days, choose two or more weigh dates, using as few as possible.
Do not weigh each calf individually as it reaches 205 days of age but rather weigh each calf in a group individually when calves average approximately 205 days of age.
10. Do not include calves receiving special treatment (show, bull test, sale) in the same group with those that did not receive an equal opportunity to perform.
