GW VIEW FROM THE BOARD

The Future Influences the Present

By Dan McCarty

We are finally on the downhill slide of 2020. It has certainly been a challenging year for everyone, from weather to markets to a global pandemic. Additionally, the past 12 to 14 months have been especially tumultuous for the cattle industry with two “black swan” events impacting our business and markets. I don’t know of anyone who predicted that just a few short months after a packing plant fire in Kansas that disrupted the supply chain, we would see an even bigger disruption when multiple packing plants were forced to close due to COVID outbreaks, backing up nearly one million head of fat cattle. On top of that, restaurants across the country were forced to close their doors, seemingly overnight, eliminating nearly 50% of beef distribution channels. Even now, seven months later, only about 40% of restaurants nationwide are back online. Even with everything that has happened since we rang in the new year, it is hard not to enjoy autumn and everything is brings to us in the cattle business. Crisp mornings, changing leaves, and shorter days will lead us right into production and bull sale season. Some of us are gathering, weaning and preg checking and some are deep into the fall calving season. Either way, both are finally seeing how a year’s work is turning out and planning for the next step in the cycle. As the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) transitions into 2021, we are entering the final year of our current strategic plan, “Meeting Modern Industry Demands.” As stated in the strategic plan, “the success of an organization is directly influenced by the ability to accurately predict and acclimate to industry changes.” The plan was certainly a team effort and many hours of work and discussion were put into its development. As a reminder, there were five primary areas of focus. They

6 | OCTOBER 2020

included the business structure of AGA, AGA finances, stakeholder profitability, growth of the AGA, and the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed’s competitive position within the beef industry. The entire plan can be found on the AGA website if you would like to review it. The strategic plan is not something that was created to present once and put on a shelf. The AGA staff utilizes the plan as a playbook for strategy and as inspiration as they develop and implement programs and projects that will impact the future of the Association. The board of directors reviews the plan at the beginning of each meeting and tracks progress and identifies areas of focus where performance is not tracking with the goals outlined in the plan. Additionally, the board uses it as a guide in the decision-making process to align initiatives with goals and strategies. In the coming months, we will be initiating a process to develop a new strategic plan for the coming five years. With the speed of change accelerating, it seems it is becoming increasingly more difficult to predict industry changes. However, it is still important that the AGA is positioned to acclimate to these changes. This will require a nimble organization to face challenges and capitalize on opportunities. One of the most impactful ways for members of the AGA to direct the future of the organization is to be involved in the committee process. The standing committees of the AGA allow members to have direct input in the evolution of the Association. Each committee will be having conference calls to prepare for and set agendas for AGA’s Golden Anniversary National Convention in December. Take advantage of these opportunities to help shape the discussion as we chart the course for the next 50 years. As the old saying goes, it takes just as much energy to wish as it does to plan. F

AGA’s Breed Percentage Resolution

O

By Megan Slater

ver the past year the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has had several conversations about the way the association displays breed percentage for each animal within the AGA herdbook. The AGA currently publishes two different indicators of breed percentage for animals in the AGA’s database: (1) Gelbvieh Percent Classifications; and (2) Genetic Makeup. 1. Gelbvieh Percent Classifications. The Gelbvieh Percent Classifications are designations (sometimes called “buckets”) such as BA63, PC75, PB88, etc. These labels represent a range of an animal’s Gelbvieh percentage which since 2017 have been based on the animal’s Genetic Makeup, but prior to that were based on the classifications given to its parents. For example, the current PC75 classification is the designation provided to an animal with a Genetic Makeup of between 69.1% to 81.5% Gelbvieh (not classifying as Balancer®), while a PC63 has a Genetic Makeup of between 56.6% to 69%. 2. Genetic Makeup. An animal’s Genetic Makeup is the animal’s Gelbvieh percentage based on pedigree. For the purposes of calculating an animal’s Genetic Makeup, parents that are listed as a PB94 (which for animals born January 1, 2017 and later are 91.1% Gelbvieh or higher) contribute 50% Gelbvieh breed composition to their offspring, a rule that has been in place for much of AGA history. For example: Sire – 93.75% Gelbvieh (PB94) → 100% Gelbvieh - contributes 50% Gelbvieh to offspring Offspring (50% from sire + 25% from Dam) = 75% Gelbvieh (3/4) Dam – 50% Gelbvieh (1/2) → 50% Gelbvieh - contributes 25% Gelbvieh genes to offspring Sire – 93.75% Gelbvieh (PB94) → 100% Gelbvieh - contributes 50% Gelbvieh to offspring Offspring (50% from sire + 50% from Dam) = 99.9% Gelbvieh (PB94) Dam – 93.75% Gelbvieh (PB94) → 100% Gelbvieh - contributes 50% Gelbvieh genes to offspring Animals that are 91% or less Gelbvieh, such as PB88 (which for animals born January 1, 2017 and later is between 81.6-91% Gelbvieh), contribute one-half of their Gelbvieh percentage to their offspring. For example: Sire – 88% Gelbvieh (PB88) → 88% Gelbvieh - contributes 44% Gelbvieh to offspring Offspring (44% from sire + 25% from Dam) = 69% Gelbvieh Dam – 50% Gelbvieh (1/2) → 50% Gelbvieh - contributes 25% Gelbvieh genes to offspring

Over the past 50 years there have been four different rule changes that have taken place regarding breed classification or “bucket” calculations on an animal. These changes have been necessary as technology and the information provided on registered cattle has changed. These multiple changes and publishing two different numbers on one animal have created confusion and a need to simplify the way animals are represented. Being in the era of incredible technological advancements and the ability to provide more and more data, yet still a need to provide straightforward and simple information, the AGA took this time to find a way to better represent Gelbvieh, Balancer, and Gelbvieh-influenced cattle within the AGA registry. Throughout this process the AGA board of directors has involved the AGA breed improvement committee and the entire membership. At the 49th Annual AGA National Convention in Billings, Montana, in December 2019, a proposal was brought forth to those in attendance and voted to move forward to present to the entire membership. A letter was then sent to the membership on January 1, 2020, and a two-month comment period was open for members to provide feedback. Megan Slater, Executive Director

Since those comments have been received, the breed improvement committee and the AGA board of directors have reviewed those comments and the AGA board has revised the original proposal. The following will be implemented across the entire AGA herdbook on January 1, 2021, after AGA board actions for the 2020 year have been ratified at the annual membership meeting on December 4, 2020:

o A Southern Balancer is an animal that contains a minimum of 25% Gelbvieh with 6.25% to 50% tropically adapted breed or combination of tropically adapted breeds. • Animals not qualifying under these three categories will have “American Gelbvieh Association Registration Paper” at the top of the certificate. •

The bucket system will be eliminated, and calculated breed composition will be listed on the animal’s registration and on the AGA Online Registry Service.

Once the bucket system is eliminated the AGA will only publish calculated breed composition, which is published as a percent and currently called “Genetic Makeup”. For many years the bucket system helped to identify breed makeup of animals when computing power was limited, however we have now had the ability to efficiently calculate breed percentage for several years and there is no longer a need for the bucket system. As fall sale season is now underway, and spring sale season is just around the corner, the AGA encourages breeders to start looking at the breed percentage (currently listed as genetic makeup) rather than the bucket to help ease the transition. F Connect with Megan for more information, questions or concerns at megans@gelbvieh.org or 303-465-2333.

• 100% Gelbvieh will be designated “Fullblood”

• 81.6% to 99.9% Gelbvieh will be designated “Purebred Gelbvieh” o Animals with 91.1% to 99.9% Gelbvieh contribute 50% Gelbvieh breed composition to their offspring

GW OVER THE FENCE

Over the Fence with Teres Lambert and Al Knapp

By Rebecca Mettler

O

accounts, etc. The AGF would also like to thank Grace Vehige, American Gelbvieh Junior Association president, for writing several of the breeder page entries for the project.

Gelbvieh in the U.S. The Breed. The Association. The People.

Why is the book so important to the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed?

ver the past couple of years, the American Gelbvieh Foundation (AGF) has had its sights on documenting the Gelbvieh breed’s history in the United States in the most comprehensive form ever gathered. The result: a stunning depiction of the opportunities, challenges, sacrifices, and triumphs made over the last 50 years to place, and keep, the Gelbvieh breed as an active genetic contributor to the U.S. beef cowherd.

The AGF’s 200-page history book begins with an account of the breed’s origins in Germany, then reviews the U.S. cattle industry from pre-civil war era until the Gelbvieh breed was introduced, which answers the question of why Continental breeds such as Gelbvieh were brought to the U.S. From there, the book is chocked full of details unearthed from the past, including the story of the first ampules of semen imported, the American Gelbvieh Association’s beginning, the passing of the hat, breed trends, and predictions for the next 50 years. The book ends with 31 breeder pages, which were purchased by past and present AGA members to provide an historical account of their operations. The AGF sincerely appreciates the AGA membership’s support of this project through corporate sponsorships, breeder contributions, historical records, personal

Gelbvieh in the U.S. T H E B REED. THE AS S OCIATION. THE PEOPLE.

The book’s official unveiling and dedication will take place at the 50th Annual AGA National Convention. Within the next month, the AGF plans to place the book for pre-order with a guarantee to be shipped in time for Christmas.

The history of the Gelbvieh breed in America has never been documented in the amount of detail that this book provides. When the AGF approached Teres Lambert, the book’s author, the group outlined their objectives for the book: the history was to include the origin of the breed, why Gelbvieh was needed in the U.S., and cover all 50 years of the Association, the breed, and the people. “I think it’s good to know where you come from in order to appreciate where you are or where you should be headed,” said Al Knapp, AGF president and the project’s lead committee member.

What has been the most rewarding part of working on this project? “I loved every part of bringing this book to fruition. I love to learn, and this book really let me grow in knowledge,” Lambert said. Lambert has fallen in love with the look and the feel of the book, and, while she doesn’t have a favorite section of the book, her favorite part in putting it all together was the one-on-one time with Edd Pritchett, a founding father of the AGA and the association’s legal counsel from inception to 2014. In fact, such conversations with some of Gelbvieh’s early members didn’t go without notice from Knapp.

History of the AGA 1971-2020

14 | OCTOBER 2020

“I was envious of Teres. She would spend hours talking to the early members like Johnny Green or Dottie Knost. She would call me and be so excited because she just spent two hours talking to someone,” Knapp said.

OVER THE FENCE GW The two most challenging aspects of the project for Lambert were the constant battle to sort fact from fiction and the obstacle of synthesizing large amounts of information. “It would have been easier to write 500 pages than to write 169 pages,” Lambert said. “That was a challenge, but I thrived on that challenge.” Lambert also went through painstaking work to ensure that the stories and information that one person would provide to her could be confirmed by another source. Her background in the cattle industry and career as a professional journalist provided her with the skills to paint an accurate as possible portrayal of Gelbvieh history.

What do you want readers to gain from this book? “I want them to walk away with the understanding of the risk, the guts, grits, and determination of the founding fathers, the investment in creating an

association and the sacrifices made to get Gelbvieh going in the U.S. Not only the founding fathers, but other members in the association that dug into their own pockets to help the Association when it was most needed,” Knapp said. “Readers will walk away with the understanding of, one, why the Gelbvieh breed was introduced to U.S. cattlemen, and, two, the challenges of introducing a breed during the time when a lot of new breeds, exotics, were being introduced. It was also a time when a lot of commercial cattlemen or seedstock people didn’t want to break the family tradition of raising British breeds,” Lambert said. “Another thing would be the challenge of getting a breed association established and on solid footing and what it has taken to get the breed and the association where it is today.” “People should appreciate how far we’ve come yet maintained the breed’s maternal strengths and our focus on the commercial customer. We still have great cattle and great people in the association,” Knapp added. F

A Note from the AGA Board of Directors

t goes without saying that 2020 has been a challenging year for several reasons. The current COVID-19 pandemic that we are still facing has impacted the economy, nearly every industry, education, events, and everything in between. As we are quickly approaching the AGA’s 50th Annual National Convention, we are keeping a close eye on the viability and the safety of hosting such an event of this size. As we look at all possible options

16 | OCTOBER 2020

during this time, our number one priority remains the safety of our members and attendees. We also want to make sure this convention and the AGA’s 50th year can be celebrated the way it deserves, after all a golden anniversary only comes around once. Please stay tuned to Gelbvieh.org and via email for updates regarding the AGA National Convention and Annual Meeting. F

CELEBRATING AGA’S GOLDEN ANIVERSARY

Dustin Aherin, Missouri

Originally from Phillipsburg, Kansas, my wife, Cassie, and I currently live in St. Charles, Missouri, given my position as a beef industry research analyst with Rabo AgriFinance, which is headquartered in the St. Louis area. Working with a global team of animal protein analysts, my primary role is offering insight to the bank and the bank’s clients regarding current and future developments in the North American beef industry. In February 2020, I completed a Ph.D. from Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute where my research focused on the development of a beef cattle production model to assess the relationship between biological and economic efficiency at the cow-calf level in connection to cow size and lactation. As part of my Ph.D., I also completed a visiting fellowship at MIT’s Sloan business school. Having been involved with the Gelbvieh breed since 2003, I grew up in the junior program and served on the American Gelbvieh Junior Association board for several years. Throughout the years, as our lives, education, and careers have progressed, my brother, Tanner, and I have worked with Bar Arrow Cattle Company, LeDoux Ranch, and Eagle Pass Ranch to maintain a small herd of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cows. Making a conscious effort to gain a broad understanding of the beef industry, I’ve been involved in the seedstock, commercial cow-calf, and cattle feeding sectors. Internationally, I spent several months in Russia on a large ET and AI project. I’ve also toured the beef and agricultural industries of Argentina, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. Before returning to graduate school, I spent a year covering western Kansas as a feedyard sales representative for Elanco Animal Health. Beyond the past three years on the AGA Board, I’ve served on the AGA breed improvement committee since 2014, with several years as chair or co-chair, and as president of the Kansas Gelbvieh Association from 20172019. Increasing the industry relevance and market share of Gelbvieh-influenced cattle drives my motivation to re-run

for the AGA Board. We’ve made progress in positioning the breed for the modern beef industry, but there’s still much to do. While I can’t offer the insight of a breeder who makes a living in the seedstock business, I hope my role as a beef industry analyst can help guide Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle to success in an ever-evolving world. I would appreciate your support.

Mark Hopfer, Oregon

I am honored and excited to accept the nomination for the American Gelbvieh Association board of directors.

I learned about the Gelbvieh breed when I had my Agriculture 1 students give presentations on breeds of livestock, as I was an agriculture science and technology instructor at Days Creek High School in Days Creek, Oregon, for 38 years. I took this job right out of Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural education. I’ve always had livestock and a small farming operation over the years that I taught. After marrying my wife, Shawn, in 1987, we looked for a purebred breed of cattle that we could raise and promote, and we selected the Gelbvieh breed. We purchased our first Gelbvieh females in 1989 and that was our start of our commitment of developing the best Gelbvieh cattle that we could. After our daughters, Emily and Brooke, were born, they joined the operation; Emily is our cattle girl and Brooke is our sheep girl, but they both have joined in the passion of producing high quality Gelbvieh cattle. We market our cattle under the ranch name of H4 Ranch. Most of the cattle are sold private treaty from our present herd of 40 females. After my retirement in 2011, I have been the full-time ranch manager, ranch hand, and “master feeder” in the H4 Ranch operation. Also, during my retirement I have been involved in starting the Pacific Northwest Gelbvieh Association that covers Oregon, Washington, Northern California, and Idaho. At the same time, I also helped get a regional Gelbvieh show started at the Oregon State Fair. In 2016 I was honored with the AGA Member of the Year and have served one year on the awards committee and two years on the member education committee. I serve as the chairman of The Rockies to the Pacific GELBVIEH WORLD |

Female Online Gelbvieh Sale for the past two years, which is a joint effort of the Pacific Northwest Gelbvieh Association and the Montana Gelbvieh Association. I would be honored to serve as a board member for the AGA which represents many outstanding individuals and help to keep it growing.

Jeff Loveless, Utah

It has been my honor to serve the American Gelbvieh Association for the past three years on the board of directors. I have had the opportunity to develop relationships with people from all over the country and have made lifelong friends. My wife Tami and I operate Loveless Gelbvieh in Spanish Fork, Utah. We have five children and nine grandchildren, who are all involved in the family business. Our cattle are run on a U.S. Forest Service permit. Our permit starts at 5,000 feet in elevation and increases up to 10,000 feet elevation in seven miles. This range is only accessible by horseback. It is a rough and steep country with a long distance between water holes. I think the strength in Gelbvieh cattle is their ability to adapt to all environmental conditions. In the Western states we battle with high altitude disease, arid desert, and many run their cattle on public lands. For these reasons, I believe Gelbvieh cattle need to be promoted for their ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. During the past three years that I have served, we have collected new data about PAP testing that could help lead to a potential new EPD. Since new data shows right-sided heart failure in feedlots, I feel it is important to continue this project to help select against susceptibility. In our experience and through testing, most Gelbvieh cattle are not affected. This can help us in our marketability for feedlot cattle because our breed can decrease mortality. I have also had the opportunity to be a part of implementing BOLT-powered EPDs, relocating the office to Lincoln, Nebraska, hiring a great executive director, and starting to implement a foot score and leg structure evaluation project.

20 | OCTOBER 2020

I recently visited some breeders in Nebraska and there is much excitement and enthusiasm around our breed. Everyone who owns Gelbvieh cattle knows how exceptional they are, and it is time for the rest of the world to know this as well. The cattle industry is enormous, and I hope to help the breed become a mainstay. We as cattlemen are facing many new obstacles. I hope to help us navigate through these uncertain times. I feel very blessed to be in this business, and for the relationships I’ve developed along the way. It would be my honor to continue to serve on the AGA board. I would appreciate your support and vote!

Derek Martin, Kansas

It has been an honor to serve on the AGA board for the last three years and as treasurer in 2019-2020. It’s also of an equal honor to be nominated for re-election. My experience with the seedstock business, knowledge of cattle feeding and marketing, and my love for Gelbvieh cattle makes me a good candidate.

I have raised Gelbvieh for over 35 years with my family in Ford, Kansas. We operate Golden Image Cattle, where we strictly select for strong maternal traits and sell a few of our top bulls to commercial cattlemen. My passion for quality livestock began while showing Gelbvieh cattle as a junior and continued as a part of the Kansas State University livestock judging team. I carried this on in the first half of my career through showing many champions and developing widely used AI sires like Extra, Tabasco and 66Z. I was fortunate to be voted Gelbvieh Herdsman of the Year two times. I still enjoy officiating national judging contests and participating in Beef Empire Days, a live and carcass show for feedlot cattle. Twenty years ago, I switched career paths away from a purebred focus to the cattle feeding business. I learned risk management, live and grid marketing, commodity purchasing, as well as business and personnel management. I am currently the manager and part owner of Kinsley Feeder, LLC. It is a custom cattle feedyard that finishes over 80,000 cattle per year. Kinsley Feeders is a medium-sized feedyard in today’s industry, but we still employ 40 people, feed over 1 million pounds of

CELEBRATING AGA’S GOLDEN ANIVERSARY feed a day and manage a $50 million cattle inventory for customers. We finance many of those customers and provide risk management with futures and options. I have served in many industry leadership positions: National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Kansas Livestock Association, Kansas Beef Council, Beef Empire Days, and County Extension. In 1991, I was president of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association where we made many lasting changes that exist today. I believe my breadth of knowledge about the cattle industry, management experience of staff and finances, and enthusiasm for a breed of cattle that have potential for growth would make me a qualified AGA board member. I am flattered by the nomination and would appreciate your vote.

Dan McCarty, Colorado

It is an honor to be asked by the nominating committee to consider running for a second term on the AGA board of directors. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term and look forward to continuing to work on behalf of Gelbvieh and Balancer® breeders from across the country.

I am a fourth-generation cattleman and my family has been involved with the Gelbvieh breed since acquiring our first Gelbvieh females in 1982. My wife, Morgan, and I own and operate McCarty Cattle Company in western Colorado. We focus on raising bulls for commercial cattlemen that hold up in rugged mountain and high desert environments. We market our bulls with a great group of breeders in the Pot of Gold Bull Sale. I am employed as the director of industry outreach with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. I represent the association to cattle producers and state cattlemen’s associations throughout the west. Additionally, I manage the NCBA Livestock Marketing Council, the group of auction markets and order buyers that are active in NCBA. Prior to joining NCBA, I was a part of the management team of a large commercial cowcalf operation and gained experience with multiple crossbreeding strategies. I graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in farm and ranch management and have attended

both the Missouri Auction School and the Western College of Auctioneering. Additionally, I was nominated for and participated in the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management Excellence in Ag Leadership Program. I am active in the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and am a past officer of the Holy Cross Cattlemen’s Association. In 2013, I was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Colorado State Board of Stock Inspection Commissioners, where I have served as president twice. Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders are well aware of the many traits that our cattle excel in. We have made great strides, but we must continue to aggressively promote our breed to continue to gain acceptance with commercial cattlemen and cattle feeders to grow our market share. I also believe it is important to continue to communicate the maternal superiority and adaptability of our breed. I would appreciate your support and look forward to your input on how we can work together to position Gelbvieh for the future.

William McIntosh, Kentucky

I must first say that being asked to run for the AGA board of directors is an honor and I am very humbled and grateful for the opportunity. My wife Carrie and I live in Georgetown, Kentucky, where my brother Steve and I own and operate McIntosh Brothers, a registered Gelbvieh and Balancer® seedstock operation. Steve and I purchased our first Gelbvieh cattle in 1989 and in that time, we have been active in both the Kentucky and American Gelbvieh Associations. From the early age of 14 I developed a passion for the breed. I am a charter member of the Kentucky Gelbvieh Association and currently serve as president. In 1995, I served as vice president of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association where I gained a ton of knowledge and developed life-long relationships. From 2003 to 2009 Steve and I owned a stocker backgrounding operation and I worked at the local sale barn as clerk, backup auctioneer, and I did some order buying. I learned so much about the entire beef industry in those years and the importance of never overlooking the basics.

We have an annual production sale on the first Monday in February, where we sell around 100 bulls and 50 females. Today our primary farm income is generated by Gelbvieh and Balancer bull sales to commercial customers. I understand what it’s like to financially depend on the cowherd to make a farm payment or equipment payment. The Gelbvieh breed is a passion, but more importantly it’s a business. And I know from an association standpoint, the board and staff should never forget the impact their decisions can have financially on the membership. I worked as the eastern field representative for the AGA and then later in my career as AGA marketing coordinator. I traveled across the country meeting AGA members, commercial producers, and feeders. I feel like I understand the challenges facing AGA members both large and small and am excited to address the challenges. Again, thank you to the nominating committee for the nomination to run for the AGA board and thank you for your consideration.

Mike Taubenheim, Nebraska

I am honored to be nominated as a candidate for the AGA board of directors. My family and I own and operate Taubenheim Gelbvieh in Amherst, Nebraska. Our family operation consists of my parents (Dale & Jeannette), my wife (Renee), and my five children (Justin (Janelle), Tanner (Kelli), Sydney, Seth, and Kale) along with my four grandchildren (Turner, Callaway, Jace, and Haven). All of my children have been very involved in the AGJA, and their growth through that program is worth so much to them. My two oldest boys, Justin and Tanner, have both made their way back to work at the family operation full time with me. I was raised on a dairy operation, and after graduating college I wanted to move our operation to beef cattle. I bought a pair of Gelbvieh bred heifers in 1980, and when I saw the resulting progeny and how well those two heifers bred back, I knew I needed to add more Gelbvieh to our herd. Taubenheim Gelbvieh has continued to grow and we strive to maintain functional cattle that will fit all aspects of the beef industry. We run 550 head of Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle along with 150 head of commercial cattle.

22 | OCTOBER 2020

Every year we implant around 150 embryos and AI 400-500 females. We do this because we are trying to produce the highest quality bulls and females for our customers. We have also started following our cattle through our family feedyard and on the rail, collecting data on every animal. We then submit the data to the AGA in hopes it will improve genomics and provide value to our customers. I am running for the AGA board of directors because I want to help to advance our breed and the beef industry. My experience raising Gelbvieh cattle over the last 40 years allows me to bring many perspectives and ideas from all angles of the industry. My desire to serve comes from the success the Gelbvieh breed has allowed my family and I to have during that time. Seeing the growth that the breed has had since I first got involved inspires me to keep the forward movement and add to the cause. Finally, I want to say thank you for your consideration, I would greatly appreciate your vote and would be honored to serve on the AGA board. Thank you. F

GW MANAGEMENT

Pasture, Rangeland and Forage Insurance for Cattle Producers Mike Fanning, Ph.D., PAS AgrPrime Insurance Agency

averages for their Grid. The producer can choose to increase the County Based Value, up to 150%, to increase the value of their forage.

he USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) launched the Rainfall Index Pasture, Rangeland and Forage (PRF) insurance program in 2007 to provide coverage against the lack of rainfall. The PRF insurance program was developed because ranchers and hay producers historically have not been able to insure their forage grown for grazing and haying. The PRF Insurance program is available in the 48 contiguous United States.

Precipitation data is collected daily and index values are calculated and published about six weeks after the end of each two-month time period. If the rainfall index for a given Grid’s 2-month interval is below the producer’s selected coverage level, an insurance indemnity is due. Indemnities are applied towards the producer owed premium and once the premium is covered, a check will be sent to the producer. Claims are settled soon after the index values are announced by RMA. In September of the coverage year, if premium is still owed, the insurance company will send you a premium bill.

T

The PRF Insurance program covers only established stands of perennial forages intended for either grazing or haying. A producer has to buy coverage by November 15 for coverage throughout the following year (January – December). Coverage is established on 2-month intervals, or mini insurance periods, county based values and coverage level. County based values are established by grazing and haying intended uses.

Below is an example of how a policy performed over a ten-year period in a specific grid.

The PRF Insurance program is sold by private insurance agents and coverage is guaranteed through private insurance companies and the USDA. The USDA also provides premium assistance by covering between 51% and 59% of the premium costs, based on the producer’s selected coverage level. Each county, rainfall Grid and 2-month intervals are individually rated and influences the cost of the program as do the coverage level and productivity factor chosen by the producer. The Productivity Factor is the dollar value of forage production per acre set by the USDA RMA. Producers can adjust this amount up or down (60% to 150%), depending on whether they want more coverage or not. Coverage and indemnities are based on the amount of rainfall measured in each Grid and 2-month interval. The rainfall measured is based on weather data collected and maintained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center. The index reflects how much precipitation is received relative to the long-term average for a specified area (Grid) and 2-month interval. Rainfall index values are generated for the two-month periods throughout the year. Producers can choose a coverage level up to 90% of the long-term precipitation

24 | OCTOBER 2020

Figure 1. Net indemnity (Indemnity – Producer Premium) example at 90% coverage/150% Productivity Factor from 2010 through 2020. There is no loss adjustment associated with the PRF insurance program because the rainfall data is collected by NOAA and losses are not based on forage yields. Indemnity payments are paid more quickly than most crop insurance policies. Unlike disaster assistance programs offered through the FSA, the producer doesn’t need to record and report hay harvested (tons) or stocking rate. GW JUNIOR CONNECTION

Cultivating Successful Cattlemen and Women By Brooke Nowack “There is no growth in the comfort zone; there is no comfort in the growth zone.” That is one of my favorite quotes. When we apply this way of thinking to the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA), we understand that it is important to get involved in the association with a hands-on, all-in approach. How can this be done? There are plenty of activities, contests, and opportunities available with the purpose of cultivating successful cattlemen and women within the membership. The most popular opportunity that our members take advantage of is attending the AGJA Junior Classics in the summers. However, junior classic isn’t just a cattle show, it is a way for young breeders to make connections, hone in on skills, and capitalize on a chance to develop. Gelbvieh junior nationals are unique in the way that all members are encouraged to compete in any and every one of the many contests that we have available. Contests that junior national exhibitors can compete in include livestock judging, sales talk, skill-a-thon, prepared speaking, and team fitting. Each contest provides a learning opportunity for juniors to expand their knowledge on aspects of the cattle industry. However, there are additional contests that members don’t have to

be present at junior nationals in order to participate in, such as video, graphic design, photography, ag podcast, and even the poster contest. So, even if juniors are not able to make it to junior nationals, there are still plenty of opportunities for them to compete in contests. Every contest is carefully thought out and revised by the members of the AGJA board of directors. The board is made up of nine directors, each serving a two-year term, and one ex-officio. Being on the board is one of the best experiences and greatest opportunities that the association has to offer. Not only do members coordinate many of the junior classic details, but we also travel to major shows such as National Western Stock Show, North American International Livestock Exposition, and American Royal. By being a hands-on, all-in member and running for the board, juniors will be given a prime opportunity to hone in on leadership skills. One of the best ways to prepare for running for the AGJA board, is to first serve as an ambassador. The AGJA ambassador travels to all of the same shows as board members, giving juniors the chance to make connections while representing the breed. There are a million ways to be involved within the association, but the best way is through a hands-on approach. This is vital in order to cultivate future leaders in our association, our industry, and our country. F

GW EVENTS OF INTEREST

Managing an Account’s Embryo Inventory By Taylor Buckley

Utilizing embryo transfer (ET) in a herd can offer many benefits as a seedstock producer. This type of breeding allows producers to pick and choose the best genetics and pair them together in hopes that the resulting offspring will maintain those superior bloodlines. The AGA Online Registry Service makes it easy to register ET calves by following these simple steps in the registry. But first, it is important to remember that before buying or selling any embryos or semen to be used in an ET program, the donor cow and AI bull must be AI sire and donor dam qualified through the AGA Online Registry. All donor dams and AI sires need the following DNA tests results entered into the registry: Genomic Option #1 (GGPHD), the conditions panel, and they must be parent verified. Please call the AGA office with any questions on what it takes to get a cow or bull qualified as a donor dam or AI sire. Registering ET calves does look slightly different then registering natural service or AI calves. First, start by clicking Herd Mgmt> Breeding> Embryo Inv on the work menu on the left side of the screen. Click “Add New Embryo.” A screen will pop up allowing you to enter the sire’s registration number, dam’s registration number and date of the flush. You will not be able to continue until all this information is entered. Once you have put in registration numbers of the sire and dam, click “Find These.” You will only be able to locate the embryos if you own the donor dam. If you are looking for set of embryos in your inventory that you do not own, they will need to be transferred into your name first.

28 | OCTOBER 2020

A separate window will then pop up where you can fill in information about the embryos such as the cane code, flush date, quantity, tank and canister where they are stored, and if the embryos are exportable. At minimum you must enter the flush date and the quantity stored. After information on the embryos is entered click “Save Inventory” and the embryos will now be displayed on the embryo inventory screen.

There are several things you can do once the embryos are in your inventory.

Edit/Adjust - On the Embryo Inventory screen you can edit/adjust the embryo inventory information or add additional embryos from a separate flush of the same mating.

Record Use - By clicking “Record Use” a window pops up that allows you to enter the AMGV registration number of the recipient cow and when the transfer took place. Once this is complete you will need to move to a separate place on the registry. On the red and green tabs there is a tab that says, embryo transfer. Once you are in the embryos transfer tab you will see that there is the flush mating allowing you to record what happened with the calf. If you want to record the calf, click the bubble that says “Record Calf ” and it will appear in the birth recording queue ready to record all of the information.

Private Treaty - List embryos for sale private treaty in the marketplace and create a catalog with embryo information. For more information on the private treaty

listing feature watch the “How To: List Animals for Sale” tutorial. Record Sale - This feature allows you to enter the Buyer ID, date the sale took place, and quantity sold. Once “Transfer Embryos to Buyer” is clicked, the embryos will show up in the Embryo Inventory of the buyer’s AGA account. A record is then written on the seller’s inventory that shows which embryos were sold when and to whom they were sold to. Fall sale season is starting and not only will some members be purchasing sets of embryos but they will also be in the process of registering ET calves. Learning how to use the embryo inventory will be beneficial as you keep track of this information. If you need assistance using this tool please give the AGA office a call 303.465.2333. F

GW MEMBER EDUCATION

Introduction to Total Herd Reporting By Taylor Buckley

F

or several years, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), and many other beef breed associations, have practiced total herd reporting. The concept of total herd reporting requires each member to record and report data on the entire registered herd. The AGA implements total herd reporting using the Association’s herd assessment process to encourage breeders to report on all active cows within the herdbook. Starting January 1 each year, AGA asks members to report all females in their member account by completing their annual herd assessment. All females 13 months of age or older need to be either assessed or disposed by the deadline of March 15 (if this date falls on a weekend, it will be the business day immediately following that weekend). This herd assessment credit given to each female allows members to register one calf (or natural-born multiples) per year, record data on the calf and the cow, and transfer the animal. Utilizing an inventory-based fee structure rather than traditional calf-based registration fees enourages the reporting and registering of all calves, rather than cherry-picking which animals are registered and reported on. As a part of the total herd reporting process, members are asked to either record a calf for every female assessed or record a reason code for why she did not have a calf in that year. Calves should be recorded and females should be reported for in a timely manner so that there is a record for every year of that female’s productive life. The inventory screen under Herd Mgmt on the AGA Online Registry Service is a useful tool when not only applying herd assessments, but also checking to see which females still need reported on. The “No Progeny” tab allows members to see which assessed females still need reported on and members can easily put multiple females

30 | OCTOBER 2020

in a birth recording queue or use the golden scroll icon to report a reason code for no calf. When it comes to reporting further information on animals within a herd, there are two important factors that go into reporting information: accurate phenotypic data and contemporary grouping. Phenotypic data includes observational data like weights, temperment, calving ease, etc. It is important to take time for accurate data collection, such as making sure the scale is cleaned off, to ensure the data is truly representative of that animal. Contemporary groups are one of the most important ascpects of an accurate genetic evaluation. Reporting information on entire contemporary groups is very important within expected progeny difference (EPD) calculations and helps make the EPDs more reflective of the animal’s performance potential. However, it is very important to make sure that animals that were treated differently or had different environmental effects are contemporaried separate from the rest of the herd. For example, show calves that are being treated differently and given a separate feed ration should be put into a separate contemporary group. Members are able to differentiate these types of management using management codes within the data recording queues on the AGA Online Registry Service. Total herd reporting is meant to improve the collection of performance information on all active animals and therefore helps to improve the accuracy for the AGA database. More accurate data fulfills the association’s ultimate goal of providing commercial producers with information they can effectively utilize and trust. F

O

n September 14, 2020, the Western Stock Show Association (WSSA) Board of Directors together with the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) management, officially announced the postponement of the 2021 NWSS until January 2022 via press conference. The American Gelbvieh (AGA) is disheartened by the news of the postponement of 2021 National Western Stock Show. Please know the AGA staff are aware of the impact the 2021 NWSS has on the Gelbvieh and Balancer® breed, and AGA members’ operations. We respect the decision of NWSS elected officials and appreciate the efforts taken on behalf of the vendors, exhibitors, and contributors to create a safe environment. We understand there are conversations being had about the possibilities of alternative options regarding
