New Generation AGA EPDs The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.
Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.
PCCI, the prefix you have come to trust for your source of calving-ease, high-growth bulls! Welcome to our 31st Annual Bull Sale:
Cattle producers are currently experiencing the best prices of all time. How long they will stay this way is unknown. The grain market, because of over supply, did not maintain high prices for long. The cattle market is not experiencing over supply and probably won’t for some time. Cow numbers are a major factor in the cattle market in regards to supply and demand. Will we ever have the number of cows there were 10 years ago? It is unlikely for the following reasons: 1. The land base to run cows on is smaller due to grassland being converted to crop ground. 2.The age of the American rancher and his ability to find ranch help. 3.The difficulty for young ranchers to get started.
These reasons make it vitally important to develop and maintain a cow base that is the most productive it can be. The cows we run must produce the most pounds per acre they can at the least cost, and the end product must be of the highest quality. Our cows deliver, and the bulls in our 2014 sale are backed by a strong maternal foundation making the carcass numbers for this set of bulls in the top 25% of the breed. These are the bulls that can beef up your cow herd, keep your production costs down and make the most of the current market.
Crossbreeding is another area that will help improve your bottom line. There is no better free lunch in the cattle business than that of heterosis. We believe that the data, proven by research, favors Gelbvieh
and Balancer genetics and know you will be impressed by our offering and how it will work to your advantage. The American Gelbvieh Association, along with the Simmental and Red Angus Associations, are in the process of developing a feeder calf index. This index will add considerable value to the feeder cattle produced from the bulls you buy. Even before this idea was put in motion by the three Associations, the bulls in this sale along with their sires have all been parent verified through DNA. We also have done a 50K run on these sires to give more accuracy to the EPD’s which will be used in the formula to compute this feeder calf index. We continue to work with the commercial and purebred cattleman to ensure the best possible outcome from your bull purchase.
Now let’s talk a little about this set of bulls. Last spring when it came time to work cows and calves, the decision was made to select only those bull calves that were calving ease bulls, either by their individual birth weight or history. These bulls have has much spread from birth to yearling and yet have themselves excelled from a performance standpoint. There are bulls of different percentages and breed mix to meet your individual needs and will work in a lot of different scenarios.
Pearson Cattle Company wants to extend a bigThankYou to our many loyal customers and also to our new ones. It seems like only yesterday we had our first sale, and now 31 years later, we are grateful for your faith and support in our program and for making these 31 years possible.
SINCERELY,
THE
PEARSON’S
Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal more unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.
Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDs The true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.
Growth Traits are More Reliable The new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.
Carcass Traits are Standardized In recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-tofinish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable. For questions or more information contact the AGA at 303-465-2333 or visit www.gelbvieh.org.

This years sale is loaded with sons of this great breeding bull. Sire of last years top seller and top averaging sire group. This year you will find more high percentage Angus, 75% or higher than last year. These bulls have the carcass and maternal “maybe better” than straight Angus. M4, as he is called here, is a maternal half brother to the original Connealy Consensus bull whose sons have set numerous high selling averages for Connealy Angus. The mark of a really true breeding bull is his ability to sire offspring that are consistent in type and kind no matter the mating. M4 does that. The legacy of this remarkable sire will be carried on by his outstanding producing daughters and hopefully through embryo transplant. M4 was lost due to a hip injury. We’re thankful we have a limited supply of semen which will allow us the ability to produce more sons and daughters from our best producing cows.

One of the easiest fleshing, heaviest muscled Gelbvieh bulls we have seen. Xterminator has the potential to be a herd changer. He’s a throw back to what the original fullblood Gelbvieh bulls looked like and for the kind of cattle they produced, heavy muscled high growth bulls that produced pounds. We only have one son in this sale, who is a pretty good scamp, but look for more to come in the coming years. Owned with Stone Gate Farms and Severtson Land and Cattle of Alberta Canada.

This bull has a killer look, along with the natural thickness and performance so valued in today’s industry. This bull is one of the soundest, square hipped, correct made bulls we have owned. Sired by the 2008 Maine-Anjou show bull of the Year, Premium Blend 47S, a powerfully constructed performance bull. We are confident that the Mad Money cattle will not only add thickness and pounds, but will pass on his eye appeal to a set of feeder cattle.

This mating was not planned but the results are excellent. This double bred M4 son simply ties everything together both numerically and visually. Big spread bull, going from a -1.7 for birth, top 10%, to 77 for weaning, top 5%, to 126 for yearling, top 2%, and combines that with an 804lb 205 day weight. The grandmother to this bull 6132S was a successful show heifer and in production is an absolute awesome female.
Cow maker may be the best way to describe this M4 son. He ranks in the top 10% for milk and combined with his moderate size his daughters should be low maintenance and milky. At the same time his steer mates will be high performing feeders.
