Dear Beef Producers,

As I write this, we have been through 45 days of endless snow. Nothing like extended cold and snow to find the weak links on all of your equipment but, we are not complaining as it appears the 3-year drought appears to be breaking. It’s been some time since we have seen one in western Nebraska that sets in this long with continuous snow cover and I still remember “78-’79, a lot of the ‘80’s , groceries delivered with a helicopter, so I tell my help to chin up it has been harder. We have cabs on tractors now and front wheel assists luxuries we didn’t always have in the earlier years. However, we did have to buy a snow machine to find cattle that had drifted. With all this the positive side there will be very green grass this spring!

Also, the most exciting news is that the cattle market is climbing up and will continue to do so as the national cowherd numbers are dropping due to previous drought conditions. This means less cattle to go to the food chain and I just read that placements were down in December 8% from a year ago. More cattle were placed early due to drought and will be pushed forward leaving a serious glut coming this fall and I think we will see prices similar to ’14 and ’15. The cattle cycle is switching to the cow/calf sector being the profit center. Many producers and multipliers are going to breed more heifers the next 3 years. Many of those being bred will just be commodity cattle but to the progressive commercial producers that have sourced elite maternal genetics with proven time-tested cow operations will be in demand and receive premiums. We have called our sale the Maternal Empire sale for a long time as we breed for the efficient momma cow that still has performance. Many traits that we breed for are not measured in EPD’s but rather in a stockman’s philosophy. Fertility, longevity, Udders, disposition and productivity. Many of these are attempted to be quantified by a number but are all subjective measures with low accuracy and are only proven long after the said animals are moved on from the herd. You simply can’t replace true stockmanship, in the current, from larger herds that have large contemporaries.

The bulls this year were developed on grass only till late November and at that time taken to Burnham’s for preparation for the bull sale. It is the best set we have ever produced from end to end. We have many ET calves from proven elite dams and an exciting group from daughters that were ET’s themselves from the elite of our cowherd. Our cowherd is as elite, self-sufficient and problem free as any in the country. We have also selected bulls form cooperators that have the same philosophies, and we only select the best of the crop and many of these are from cows that we own together and or from our proven maternal sires. Elite cows make elite breeding bulls that pass on elite genetics! CTR is a no-frills operation that requires the cows to work for us, they are never given extra feed because they don’t look good or are not producing like we would like. If they aren’t they are culled, our philosophy is why pass on the poor genetics to you as a commercial producer. Many other subsidize, my dad calls them welfare cows, their cow herd with more than they need and as I have said before “corn helps those that can’t help themselves”. You will only get genetics from our program that are unpampered hard working functional cows.

Janice and I have bought registered cattle from several different operations the past few years. The cows that we have purchased from Cedar Top Ranch have always been the easiest fleshing, raised some of the best calves, and have easily the best udders. When checking cattle in the summer you have to go look for them as they are not laying around the water tank and I never really thought about it much till this winter. I would go to feed cows hay in the 3+ feet of snow and the CTR cows are never at the gate waiting like all my other purchases. They were out hustling and digging in and taking care of themselves. I would have to wait 2 hours sometimes to get them to come to hay. They really sold me as they have maintained condition while the other cattle have struggled. I’m sure if I couldn’t have got to them that the CTR cows would be fine and in good condition where I’m not sure the others would have made it. The CTR cattle are true ranch cattle that raise big calves and breed back better than any I have been around, now I know why they work and I mean truly work for our outfit.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES

Below is a list of the expected progeny differences (EPDs) and index values provided by the AGA along with a definition of each trait that is measured. Since AGA’s release of BOLT-powered EPDs on August 6, 2018, the majority of EPDs are BOLT EPDs, which means that Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals BOLT EPDs can be directly compared with other animals in the registries of other partner breed associations within the International Genetic Solutions group. Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs that are excluded from BOLT include heifer pregnancy and 30-month pregnancy. The FPI™ index is unique to the AGA and are not comparable across breeds.

MATERNAL TRAITS

Calving Ease Direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (MILK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first calf heifers.

Stayability (STAY): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

PERFORMANCE TRAITS

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

CARCASS TRAITS

Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

INDEXES

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.

FPI™: An economic selection index, which stands for feeder profit index, is designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

We have been raising Balancer cattle for some time and have tried a few different operations. The CTR cattle impressed me from a maternal standpoint in what they could raise and how well they crossed with other breeds when I worked for Scott. Scott was doing large carcass tests at the time for the AGA and the data was very good for their home raised cattle and sires. After trying some other genetics I have settled on the CTR cattle our last year’s calf crop went 95%CH or higher with 39% going CAB. And 12% Prime. Weights were heavy indicating the grow these cattle have even though they are maternal bred. We feed several other cattle out as well and Scott has helped me source those cattle and I am always in the market if your cattle are CTR sired, especially 100% CTR sired.
