TJB Gelbvieh story.

TJB Gelbvieh is a family-owned and operated farm with a focus on superior genetics and an emphasis on customer satisfaction. The operation began in 1988 in Chickamauga, GA. Dr. Bickett had the opportunity in his large animal veterinary practice to experience Gelbvieh cattle. The initial attraction to this great breed was their performance and disposition, as well as their superior milking ability. Dr. Bickett then began his search for elite Gelbvieh genetics to utilize in his ET program. The continued search for dominant donor females led us to Beartooth Ranch in 1992. The real breakthrough in the direction of the TJB program came through the purchase of FLK Hochger 108N. She proved to be the first real impact female in the program. The future purchases of Vickie Vail, Vickie V, Lady Granite 432S, Lady Granite 2001E, and Lady Granite 2079L formed the base of females still working today. The program today is still based on the same philosophy to identify and utilize proven cow families. We strive diligently to produce elite bulls and females that will increase profitability for the commercial cattle industry and seedstock producers. Stacking dominant females in the pedigrees for multiple generations provides us with the consistency we think necessary to be genetic providers not genetic multipliers. TJB Gelbvieh has focused on cow families in a structured breeding program for more than thirty years. Our herd emphasis has been fertility and longevity generated from a moderate framed, deep-bodied female that stems from a superior individual. TJB Gelbvieh is proud to be involved in the beef industry and the Gelbvieh breed in particular. Gelbvieh cattle will play a role in the future of the beef industry and TJB genetics will be a factor in that development.

I want to sincerely welcome you to our Maternal Magic X Bull Sale. 2021 has seen some return to normalcy in a Covid environment, but there still exists much uncertainty and fear. Again, I am thankful to be in agriculture where we can enjoy doing what we love. Once again, we present for your evaluation the best set of bulls we can produce. We continually strive to improve our product for the beef industry. We continue to stress the maternal merits of this great breed. I want all of you to realize, we believe there is a balance of traits that we expect our cattle to maintain. We demand excellence from our cattle in growth, fertility, and all convenience traits. As you evaluate the bulls offered, you will probably recognize that there are not many bulls with extreme growth and milk EPD’s. Why do we not chase these numbers? Anyone can pick bulls for your operation with the “biggest” EPD’s. In my experience, selecting these extreme EPD’s has proven to negatively affect any cow herd. We continue to produce sound, deep bodied, functional cattle that maintain udder quality, mature cow size, and feet structure. We have cattle with plenty of milk for our environment and to further push that envelope, we sacrifice fertility and body condition. In the words of an old cattleman I had great respect for, “Nature takes care of the extremes!” There have been many milestones for me this year. I have now been married to Alisa for half my life as we celebrated 30 years of marriage and my 60th birthday! Kelsie will have our first grandchild before the sale, as she and Bo are expecting a baby girl the first week of October. Katelyn graduated from UGA and is now working at the Capitol in Atlanta. We have fulfilled our education responsibility! I recently enjoyed my 35-year reunion from Auburn Vet School. Where has time gone? To say our family has been blessed in this life would be an understatement. We have been fortunate to add team members this year as well. Tom Murphy joined us right before last year’s sale and now has a full year under his belt. We are so thrilled to have him and his 30 plus years of experience in the Gelbvieh breed. Long time friend and past dairy farmer, Rusty Hays, signed on this spring. What an asset he has been to the total operation! Bulls backed by

dominant females.

TJB Gelbvieh bulls are all backed by dominant females selected for generations of maternal excellence. Many bulls offered in this sale are descendants of 3-6 generations of donor females in our program. Thus, the continued emphasis in our marketing as “Maternal Magic.” All bulls that were eligible have been tested for coat color unless they were homozygous black by birth. All bulls will be listed as HB (homo black), Black-RC (have a red gene), or Red. Bulls listed as HP (homozygous polled) have either been tested or, most likely, assigned HP status by birth right. Although we are comfortable with this approach, it is not 100% guaranteed. Definition of terminology for polled status and color status: • Black (Homo D) - DNA tested homozygous black • Black (Not Homo-D) - DNA tested and is a red gene carrier • Black (RC) - Not DNA tested with a known red parent • HP - Most of our bulls descend from homo polled parentage. These weren’t tested homo polled, but we are confident they should be. • DP - Double polled parentage. Possible homo polled but not tested.

Management

of bulls selling.

Bulls were weaned in April and given boosters of Bovi-Shield Gold FPL5, Clostridium vaccine, and dewormed with Long Range injectable wormer. The bulls were initially grazed on winter annuals and supplemented with 10 pounds of Commodity Based Feed from Athens Coop. After winter grazing quit, the bulls were fed hay and feed. As Sudangrass became available, the bulls rotationally grazed with a continued 10 pounds supplement. The gains from weaning to yearling were approximately 2.5 pounds/day. These bulls YW could probably have been bigger upon reflection, but we try to maintain a balance of adequate gain to maximize future soundness. After grazing was finished, the bulls were increased to 20 pounds and fed Sudangrass Baleage until sale day. They were dewormed with Synanthic in September. 4 MaternalMagic Bull Sale X

Impressive is how I describe this first set of Rebel Yell calves. Rebel Yell was our 2020 NWSS Grand Champion Balancer Bull as well as the Balancer Bull Futurity Champion. I told everyone that this bull was bred to be a producer and not just a champion. His first calves are proving me right. We sold a full sister to Lots 1 & 2 this spring to Hilltop Farms for $16,000. 914U is one of our most prized females ever and combined with the genetics of 921U, the sky truly is the limit.

She steadily earned her way to the donor pen with her first calf selling to Warner Beef, her second calf was a highlight in 2019 to Steve Bayne. Partnership with

Three T Farms.

We are thrilled to continue our joint Gelbvieh marketing venture with our great friends at Three T Farms in Rineyville, KY: Jason, Phillip, and Johnny Taylor! Our relationship has evolved over the past ten years or so, and we are grateful to know and work with them. As many of you know, I grew up in Kentucky. When the Taylors became interested in the Gelbvieh breed and reached out to us, it was evident that our families were closely intermingled, as I grew up minutes away from their families. Those family ties and our joint interest in producing quality Gelbvieh cattle lead us to this venture today.

We are currently producing approximately 50 fall calves and 50 spring calves utilizing our genetics and the Taylor commercial herd as recipients. This is a dream come true for me to have an additional recip population to propagate our very best genetics
