Lunch Served at 11:30AM Dear Cattlemen: Welcome to the 10th Annual Triple Play Ranches Production Sale. First and foremost, we want to say thank you! It’s always a pleasure doing business with each of you and we are sincerely grateful for your interest and support our breeding programs. We are excited about this year’s offering. While our numbers are not large, we have collectively strived to put together a set of functional bulls that will support performance, carcass quality, and maternal characteristics in their offspring allowing for pounds on sale day and quality replacement females. You will notice that nearly all of the bulls are well above average or near the top of the chart for weaning and yearling EPDs. With the final product being pounds on sale day these growth numbers can add dollars to the bottom line. We are sincerely honored to have you evaluate our genetics and invite you to visit any of our ranches to view the cattle prior to sale day. We look forward to seeing you on March 11th at Huron Continental Marketing. Sincerely, The Volek, Forbes, And Leonhardt Families

EPDs – What they mean? Calving Ease Direct (CED): Represented as percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. Birth Weight (BW): – predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight. (actual birth weights can be deceptive as the environment, nutrition, and over due calves are key factors). Weaning Weight (WW): – predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (Adjusted to age of dam and 205 days of age). This an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Higher number preferred. Yearling Weight YW): – predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. Higher number preferred. Milk (MK):– The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint. Higher number preferred. Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.
Sire Selection: A large portion of a ranchers revenue comes from pounds sold on sale day. If you are looking to put your cow herd on the fast-track to herd improvement, sire selection is key to meeting your goals. While we believe structure and phenotype are very important parts of the selection process we encourage you to take into account EPDs and carcass data. Understanding EPD data is a useful tool in making the best sire selection for your herd. A brief description of EPDs is located on page 4 of the catalog.

Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation - All of the AGA EPDs are backed by the industry’s largest and most robust multi-breed international genetic evaluation in the world. Growth and carcass EPDs for Gelbvieh and Balancer animals are directly comparable to Simmental, Red Angus, Shorthorn, Limousin and a growing number of other breeds. The multi-breed EPDs combine pedigree, performance, ultrasound, carcass and genomic data into one easy to use set of numbers. Seedstock breeders and their commercial customers can have confidence in the AGA’s EPDs to evaluate the genetic merit between breeds for both purebred and hybrid seedstock.

Since going to work for Genex a few years ago, I have had the chance to see almost every bull in their lineup and Ellingson Identity is one of my very favorites. We didn’t do a lot of AI breeding the last couple years because we wanted to get a good test on Cow Town, but I couldn’t resist using Identity on a few select cows. 405B has the depth and spring of rib of his sire and sports a CED number of 17 which is in the top 3% of the breed. This guy should work on heifers and make heifers that will work.

This year we are offering a fancy set of black heifers. The offering of this group of heifers has been a tough one. They are the keeping kind. Selected for their maternal traits and complete balance. A few show heifer prospects plus each of the offering should make a great cow. Very strong cow families and longevity can be found in their pedigrees. No extra feed to these heifers just a good growing ration and they are easy keepers.
Lot 38 Lot 38 – This purebred heifer has a balanced design. Her dam and grand dam are still in our herd doing a great job. Did I mention Jack MS 366 is 11 years old. This heifer should be Homo black. Test pending. SHOW HEIFER PROSPECT
Lot 41 Lot 41- This eye appealing heifer goes back to the Export Dark bull on her dams side. We had him in our herd a long time as he added calving ease and growth. Many of his females are still working for us.
Lot 39 Lot 39 – This heifer has all the great makings for a cow. Plenty of rib shape, dimension and length.
Lot 42 Lot 42 - A very stylist heifer that really catches your eye. A sound heifer with an elegant front. Sired by our Homo black herdsire Bushwacker. Homo black test pending. SHOW HEIFER PROSPECT
Lot 40 Lot 40 – A very attractive black heifer that has momma cow written all over her. Spring of rib, thickness, and power are just a few of her assets. She also should be Homo black. Test pending
Lot 43 Lot 43 - This balancer heifer is very complete with eye appeal and style to go with it. Her dam has been a constant in our herd and is still doing great job at 11 years
Lot 44 – Another attractive Maximizer heifer. Her dam and grand dam are still in the herd doing their job. 49323 is an Emil-lene sired dam and they have made the best momma cows. This heifer is very complete and fancy. SHOW HEIFER PROSPECT
Lot 44
Lot 45 – This heifer has an overall completeness about her. From show ring to the pasture she appears to have a bright future ahead of her. Her grand dam a commercial cow was a cow that produced some outstanding offspring for us. SHOW HEIFER PROSPECT
