MY NOIRE

Hello Ladies, You probably noticed the different look of the magazine. We are in the process of revamping myNoire. We are trying to go with a simple, clean look. We hope you like it. Along with the new look, we are also trying to incorporate some new ideas. Each issue, we will have a Makeup, Fashion, and Health column. These things go hand and hand with hair. Although myNoire is primarily a hair care magazine, we want our readers to learn more about their over-‐all beauty. Every issue will also feature an Editor’s Choice article, which you’ll see sharing this page with my letter. I will discuss my favorite item of the month. We will also feature a Hairstyle of the Month on later pages in the magazine; One for straight hair and one for natural hair.

EDITOR’S CHOICE I have fallen in love with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie by Shea Moisture. The Curl Enhancing Smoothie is a styling product, but it uses natural ingredients. I used this product for a twist-‐out as well as a wash-‐and-‐go. The results were great in both cases. The curl enhancer is extremely light, and it smells amazing while stretching the hair. When I used it on my wash-‐and-‐go, I didn’t need nearly as much gel, and my hair looked longer. I could also wear the wash-‐and-‐go longer because I didn’t have as much product in my hair. From now on, I think I will be using the Curl Enhancing Smoothie on a regular basis before applying gel on my wash-‐and-‐go styles. The twist-‐out also had a nice result. I liked that the curl enhancer was the only product I needed ƚŽ ƵƐĞ͘ DLJ ŚĂŝƌ ǁĂƐ ĞdžƚƌĞŵĞůLJ ƐŽŌ ǁŚĞŶ / ƚŽŽŬ ŝƚ down. It could be good or bad, depending on how long you want the style to last. Because the product is so light, I had to re-‐twist my hair daily. Without daily maintenance, something heavier might be needed. Overall, I give the Curl Enhancing Smoothie an A+. Try it and let us know what you think.

Things you might do: Have a hair day Get a pedicure Do your nails Go to the movies Hang out with your girls or do whatever takes your ŵŝŶĚ Žī ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ƐƚƌĞƐƐ ŝŶ your life.

hen they say that Black is Beautiful, boy do they mean it. We recently attended the Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Show in Atlanta, Ga., and beautiful black women and men in their natural state immediately surrounded us. Gorgeous doesn’t do them justice. These women and ǡ ϐ ǡ ϐ Ǥ knew who they were, and where they came from. The show, within itself was wonderful. It started at the expo, giving visitors the opportunity to see different natural hair products to keep their natural hair healthy, and most of all chemical free. There were different seminars to show women and men how to twist their locks, moisturize their twists, and maintain their fros.

Different vendors gave their advice on how to maintain a healthy mane; others were there to help guests look fashionable while doing it. Vendors and entrepreneurs sold earrings and t-‐shirts to help accessorize the natural look. All the while, there was entertainment from local artists, all of whom were very talented. Guests also got to watch as ladies made the big chop, and joined “team natural.” Later that evening, guests were entertained by a fashion show, which showcased local designers with au natural models. I was excited to see all of the different designs, and how passionate designers were about their work. The event was lovely, so much that I — someone who loves the so-‐called “creamy crack”— have decided to go natural. The women at the show inspired me to join the other side. Although I won’t be making the big chop, I’m excited for my new journey into natural land, as are many of my friends. I recommend women and men to take a trip to this annual hair show next year— even those who aren’t natural—just to get the amazing experience. Who knows, when you leave, you may be convinced to join

team natural too.

o many people suffer from hair loss and hair thinning. On average, individual’s loss approximately 100-‐150 strands of hair per day. This doesn’t make your hair thinner, it ϐ their life cycle and new hairs will grow back soon to replace them. Thinning hair of the hair is just a generic factor. Some people are just born with the thinning hair gene unfortunately. Other times things such as stress, nutritional changes, and hormonal changes might also increase hair thinning. As of now, there is no cure for thinning hair. However, there are many ways to hide it. For one, you can have your hair a darker color. Blacks and dark brown tones trends to cover the scalp a little more. Additionally, try to wear your hair with more volume. Curly and Wavy hair is a great way to do this. The coils in the hair tend to cover the scalp and plus textured hair is in. As far as home remedies, egg whites and lemon juice are known for strengthening the roots of your hair. There are also biotin and daily anti hair thinning and anti hair loss dietary supplements that can be taken. If you happen to be one of those women who happen to suffer severely from hair thinning or hair loss, don’t let it to you. If the above remedies don’t work for you, and you need to have longer, then you can always get a weave or wear a wig. Whichever route you take, always remember that ǯ ǡ ϐ of your inner beauty. Tanisha tells her story Where do I begin? I originally started my hair journey in hopes to become natural. I was used to ϐ Ǥ If I decide to go fully natural, I plan to have a long transition. I can’t fathom the idea of having short hair. As my hair grows, I question whether being natural is really what I want. My last relaxer was June 2011. Since then, I’ve been doing both relaxed and natural styles. I don’t really have a hair routine, but I have started to make sure my hair is well moisturized and deep conditioned. My hair has become much thicker since I haven’t had a relaxer, and I am able to handle my new growth a lot better. I wonder if my hair has become thicker because I’ve actually been paying attention to it, or if it’s due to the lack of chemicals. I’m at a stage, in my journey, in which I’m really ready to just experiment with my hair. My ultimate goal in this journey is to have healthy, arm-‐pit length hair, natural or relaxed. If I do continue on my natural journey, unlike most people who want to achieve a natural hair look, I would more than likely straighten it most of the time.

any women do not know that there actually is a term for hair between the relaxed an natural states. It’s called telaxed hair. When hair is telaxed, the individual usually puts a texturizer or mild relaxer on the hair for a short period ǡ ȋ ϐ less) and then rinse it out. ϐ natural look, but also the relaxers make it more managable. Many women have chosen to use this alternative so they can still wear “natural” hairstyles without having the hassle of having natural hair. Telaxed women usually stretch out their relaxers, or texturizers, over four to six months. Just as if they were getting a relaxer, they only process their new growth. Becoming telaxed is great medium for those who can’t decide whether or not to go natural. Women. who do decide to try telaxing, should make sure to remember this is a chemical process, and hair will bot be entirely in it’s natural state. Also, because telaxing doesn’t have ϐ ǡ may react to the relaxer more than desired. This creates various curl patterns within hair. Make sure to consider the pros and cons of entering the telaxed state.
