« WHERE ARE YOU TAKING ME GRANDPA? » « OÙ M’EMMÈNES-TU GRAND-PÈRE? »

EN/FR

T

he story of a young artist named Foret, César Foret. It all starts with the strong relationship between him and his grandfather. Named Albert Foret, the latter was also a painter and heir from father to son to a huge forest which was his space for creation and expression. The grandfather had a great affection for his grandson and shared his knowledge and mastery with him, teaching him to look at art and the art of drawing itself. The young Caesar lived his childhood among his great trees and developed a joy for life and found pleasure in this forest which was like his own. Time passed and the young man found himself separated from the place in which he lived and grew up next to one for whom he held great esteem. The move from one universe to another will remain anchored in his memory. César leaves the forest and above all leaves his model, his grandfather. Albert gives his grandson a gift, which for him is of enormous value, but César, too young to understand, takes this notebook as a souvenir that he will learn to discover much later in his life. The gap widens and time passes. The years pass and life takes its course when César, now an adult, learns that the man who had shaped his childhood has left this world. He constantly returns to memories with his grandfather that he has never erased from his life. The only thing Cesar takes with him is a sketchbook of his grandfather’s that lives deep in his memory. He finds this sketchbook hidden somewhere and decides to take it with him on his journey back to the forest. After all this time, he rediscovers the contents of the notebook which awakens feelings of nostalgia in him. He starts flipping through it again and again and stops at a drawing of his grandfather among a group of people in his forest. They are all standing in front of vegetation that César immediately recognises. He sees a scribbled part in the background of them. As he looks closer, he notices something that is abstract at the moment, but which has a great similarity with the sketches on the previous pages of the notebook. Until now, he had not paid attention to the details of the contents of the notebook. The trees he recognised in the drawing reminded him of his visits to the forest, which he wanted to find once he had arrived. On the spot, he retraces the steps of his childhood, which leads him, which takes him away, which is his domain. He sees this image that his memory brings up and recalls the stories his copy used to tell him. All this leads him to these trees that have changed since then. These trees that inhabit emotions and run a trail...the same one that is found on a page in

his notebook. He takes out this page, and thinks: “a replica? why do grandpa? “. At that very moment, he has no idea that these two cards are the key to a place he doesn’t know yet. By bringing the two elements together, César Foret plays with the rotations, he plays with the angles by superimposing the sheet of the notebook and says “Marie Antoinette! an intersection! This César is a taker, he goes! He comes across a barrier of trees and asks himself: “What are you hiding, grandfather, tell me”. He moves forward in spite of this density and discovers an open space where the grasses have created an important place for themselves by their height. César comes face to face with a module, a machine that he can hardly make out. Overgrown with plants, covered with dust, its appearance impresses him. He is seized with emotion. The accomplishment of the drawings in the notebook is placed in front of him. This machine had become the habitat of birds, the shelter of invasive plants, the refuge of dust. César almost wept, moved by a machine he wanted to discover. As he enters, some old rollers lie on the floor, he raises his head and sees a dashboard, a control panel that dazzles him. On the same floor, he notices a print that confirms the presence of his grandfather, the drawing on the cover of the notebook. The same shapes, the same hollows, the same stops, the same traces. He hurries to insert the notebook into the ground. The movement is hard but turns counter-clockwise and a gear engages. It’s a trap door! Completely black, buried in the ground, “what is this place? “César murmurs. He takes the risk of going down the ladder, into this trapdoor, with the help of a lamp allowing him to light up the place. He is afraid because he doesn’t know what to expect. He is apprehensive. Facing the wall, a large painting canvas, a large work of art at the end of his nose. A newspaper on a rough wooden table covered with dust. The story of a painting called the map of the world from above, the adventure Albert Foret had in flying over the countries of the world before the world war forced him to hide his flying machine and keep the secret that only a ‘Foret’ could discover. César is off on a very long journey again, but this time sitting in Albert Foret’s cellar. “Take me with you, Grandpa”.

ECO MESSAGE

In our project, the intention is to be sustainable. In order to achieve this goal, we have worked on several aspects. According to LEED “wastewater management”, the objective is to reduce water waste and encourage water reuse. In our habitat, we have created a system to reuse both grey water and rainwater. This will allow the habitat to be more independent. According to LEED “building reuse” the challenge is to reduce waste and environmental damage related to the manufacture and transportation of materials. In our project the habitat is dismountable, transportable, reusable and the construction last only one day. Therefore, we do not destroy the environment with machines and materials deposited in nature. According to the LEED “reduced parking footprint” the objective is to minimize environmental nuisance, less dependence on the automobile, less land consumption, less rainwater runoff. In our project, we have relocated the parking lot so that the site is not disturbed by environmental nuisances, to be independent from the automobile and finally not to destroy the natural landscape of the site by vehicles.
