PREFACE

An international Rooftop Project with an urban design exercise in Mauritius, Germany and United States. Three (3) schools are chosen for this experimentation: HCU, Haffencity University Hambourg, FAMU School of Architecture & Engineering Technology and ENSA Nantes MAURITIUS. Collaborators are asked to design a project on the top of an existing building in a dense urban context. Building sites have been identified in Grand-Baie, Hamburg and Tallahassee Florida. ENSA Nantes Mauritius Students were assigned Tallahassee Florida as site. The project goals include experimenting innovative collaboration and design techniques and process with VR (virtual reality) environment, immersive 3D modelling and more.

This sequence is supported by ENSA Nantes tutors: Laurent Lescop, Anna Mallac-Sim and Gabrielle Brun. Accompanied by Bernd Dahlgrün (HCU) and Olivier Chamel (FAMU).

Un projet international sur les toits avec un exercice de design urbain à l’île Maurice, en Allemagne et aux États-Unis. Trois (3) écoles sont choisies pour cette expérimentation : HCU, Haffencity University Hambourg, FAMU School of Architecture & Engineering Technology et ENSA Nantes MAURICE. Les collaborateurs sont invités à concevoir un projet au sommet d’un bâtiment existant dans un contexte urbain dense. Des sites de construction ont été identifiés à Grand-Baie, Hambourg et Tallahassee Florida. Les étudiants de l’ENSA Nantes Ile Maurice se sont vus attribuer le site de Tallahassee Florida. Les objectifs du projet comprennent l’expérimentation de techniques et de processus de collaboration et de conception innovants avec un environnement VR (réalité virtuelle), la modélisation 3D immersive, etc.

Cette séquence est soutenue par les tuteurs de l’ENSA Nantes : Laurent Lescop, Anna Mallac-Sim et Gabrielle Brun. Accompagné par Bernd Dahlgrün (HCU) et Olivier Chamel (FAMU).

HISTORY Located on the southeast corner of South Monroe Street (Entrance) and College Avenue (Parking), The Exchange Bank Building was constructed in late 1927 in a Neo-Egyptian and Greek design and designed by William Augustus Edwards and formally opened on March 3, 1928. Consisting of a basement and five floors including a 19-foot first floor (5.8m), that gives it the appearance of a sixstory building, it was the tallest building in Tallahassee when it opened. The building was known for many years as the Midyette-Moor Building, for the insurance company that owned and occupied the building from 1935-1973. It was at the forefront of the business community with such prominent tenants as LeRoy Collins (Governor of Florida 1955-1961) and B.K. Roberts (Florida Supreme Court Justice 18491976). The Building is the only structure in the Original Plan of the City of Tallahassee on the Register to retain its architectural integrity and continued use for its original commercial purpose. The first modern private office building in Tallahassee. One of the few downtown buildings to have maintained its architectural integrity. Private. N.R. 1984. In 1953, Additions and Alterations of the Offices of MidyetteMoor Insurance Agency were made by James A. Stripling A.I.A Architects and in 1985, the Building was rehabilitated by Wilton Miller and Robert Olive. Eclectic. Edwards and Sayward, architects with 6 stories buff brick, limestone trim, terra-cotta wall ornamentation in a NeoEgyptian and Greek design.

Situé à l’angle sud-est de South Monroe Street (entrée) et de College Avenue (parking), l’Exchange Bank Building a été construit à la fin de 1927 dans un style néo-égyptien et grec et conçu par William Augustus Edwards. Il a été officiellement inauguré le 3 mars 1928.

Constitué d’un sous-sol et de cinq étages, dont un premier étage de 19 pieds (5,8 m) qui lui donne l’apparence d’un bâtiment de six étages, il était le plus haut bâtiment de Tallahassee lors de son ouverture. Le bâtiment a été connu pendant de nombreuses années sous le nom de Midyette-Moor Building, du nom de la compagnie d’assurance qui l’a possédé et occupé de 1935 à 1973. Il était à l’avant-garde de la communauté des affaires avec des locataires de premier plan tels que LeRoy Collins (gouverneur de Floride 1955-1961) et B.K. Roberts (juge de la Cour suprême de Floride 1849-1976). Le bâtiment est la seule structure du plan original de la ville de Tallahassee figurant sur le registre à avoir conservé son intégrité architecturale et à avoir continué à être utilisé pour son objectif commercial initial. Le premier immeuble de bureaux privé moderne de Tallahassee.

L’un des rares bâtiments du centre-ville à avoir conservé son intégrité architecturale.

ABOUT The Crown is an architectural project on the roof of one of the oldest buildings in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida in the United States. It aims to crown the lower part and give it a new look that sublimates its environment by creating a projection space, a completely different experience from ordinary cinema that could become the space of emotions for young producers or directors who want to share their work with a universal audience.

The Crown est un projet architectural sur le toit de l’un des plus anciens bâtiments de Tallahassee, la capitale de la Floride aux États-Unis. Il vise à couronner la partie inférieure et à lui donner un nouveau ressenti qui sublime son environnement en créant un espace de projection, une expérience complètement différente du cinéma ordinaire qui pourrait devenir l’espace d’émotions pour les jeunes producteurs ou réalisateurs qui veulent partager leur travail avec un public universel.

Le Charisme d’un espace

Le charisme d’un espace The Exchange Bank Building is an old building with old materials and constitutes a heritage for this city of Tallahassee. The project’s intentions navigate a romance with the building’s antiquity, adding charisma to the space as a royal art. It embraces the emotions, the experience and the way the light dances on the roof. The architecture is everything that comes together. Downtown Tallahassee is surrounded by building structures that forge the intensity and pressure of a work environment. An important thing in life is travel, which allows people to get away and add experiences to their memory.

It allows people to get some distance and a rooftop intervention is a similar opportunity. The Crown is located 22 meters above the ground and has a large staircase used as a step that allows an additional 5 meters of height. And the step is an open space called “relaxation zone” that can be freely used by the public.

The envelope of the project is a pattern designed and strategically layered to deal with Tallahassee’s sun exposure. Composed of thin copper plates, it enhances the visual effect of the roof and completely changes the atmosphere at the corner of South Monroe Street and College Avenue. The Crown is a masterpiece and a qualitative intervention that illuminates the sky from day to night.

L’Exchange Bank Building est un bâtiment ancien avec des matériaux anciens et constitue un héritage pour cette ville de Tallahassee. Les intentions du projet naviguent vers une romance avec l’ancienneté du bâtiment, ajoutant du charisme à l’espace comme un art royal. Il englobe l’émotions, l’expérience et la façon dont la lumière danse sur le toit. L’architecture est tout ce qui s’assemble. Le centre-ville de Tallahassee est entouré de structures de bâtiments qui forgent l’intensité et la pression d’un environnement de travail. Une chose importante de la vie est le voyage, qui permet aux gens de s’évader et d’ajouter des expériences à leur mémoire. Cela permet aux gens de prendre de la distance et une intervention sur un toit est une opportunité similaire. The Crown est situé à 22 mètres au-dessus du sol et possède un grand escalier utilisé comme gradin qui permet une hauteur supplémentaire de 5 mètres. Et le gradin est un espace libre intitulé “zone de détente” qui peut être utilisé librement par le public.

L’enveloppe du projet est un motif conçu et stratégiquement superposé pour faire face à l’exposition au soleil de Tallahassee. Composée de fines plaques de cuivre, elle renforce l’effet visuel du toit et change complètement l’atmosphère à l’angle de la rue South Monroe et de College Avenue. The Crown est un chef-d’œuvre et une intervention qualitative qui illumine le ciel du jour et de nuit.

PROGRAM

The Crown project is a projection room designed for the general public. A comfortable lift extended to accommodate all kinds of people in one place. The projection room can be used as a cinema for short films or other cinematographic screenings. In order to extend the uses of the space, the tier can be transformed into a “chill area”, a place where students can meet or organise meetings.

Le projet ‘The Crown’ concerne une salle de projection conçue pour le grand public. Un ascenseur confortable agrandi pour accueillir toutes sortes de personnes en un seul endroit.

La salle de projection peut être utilisée comme un cinéma pour la projection de court-métrage ou d’autres projection cinematographique Afin de pousser les usages de l’espace, le gradin peut être transformé en “chill area”, un endroit où les étudiants peuvent se rencontrer ou organiser des réunions.

STRUCTURAL MAQUETTE In order to test the structure of the project, a spaghetti model was built considering the applied loads. The material allows a readability in relation to the structural dimensioning and spacing required for the architectural intervention.
