Let me ask you this…
“When was the last time you went out and dressed up?”
Now, let me ask you…
“When was the last time you left the house?”
One final question…
“When you left the house, why didn’t you dress up?”
We have received so much feedback lately that “people aren’t going anywhere, so they don’t have the need to “dress up”. We are here to tell you, that every time you leave the house, is an opportunity to dress up!
Our point is, whatever your day involves, take the chance to Dress Up, as it Feels Good! The secret to not looking too over the top is appropriateness.
Meaning, wear garments that are appropriate the situation. Don’t go wearing a pair of high–heeled stilettos to the farmers' market, however, there is nothing inappropriate about wearing a sundress and a pair of wedges.
“My friends [or people around me] make me feel like I am too overdressed” is a really common phrase that clients share with us. And to that we share Sam’s quote “You can never be over dressed, only inappropriately dressed”.
You can never be over dressed, only inappropriately dressed
–
Sam Woods
If you have beautiful clothes that you love to wear and you go grocery shopping, there is an opportunity to wear them. If you have a handbag that you love and you go out for coffee, that is a chance to carry it. Those stunning earrings that you’re dying to wear, lunch with the girls is the perfect place to showcase them.
STYLE TIP!
Chances are, if you are meeting friends for brunch, they too would like to get dressed up and make use of the beautiful items in their wardrobe. So why not make a thing of it, call each other and plan your outfits, it will ensure you don’t feel too over the top or too casual.
Don’t waste a day of being stylish because you feel intimated by other people dressing down. We give you permission to #DressUpItFeelsGood. So, put on your favourite skirt and go and pick up your loaf of bread this week.
Vibrantly yours,
Sam

Ahhh... I’m having trouble sleeping!
BY DIANA ARUNDELL, UNIVERSITY QUALIFIED NATUROPATH
We’ve all experienced how difficult it can be to get through a day when we haven’t had a good sleep the night before. Everything becomes difficult to deal with physically, mentally and emotionally. As a result, we may feel too tired to exercise, crave sugary food for a quick energy fix, eat more junk food as we’re too tired to cook, sleep during the day or drink too much caffeine which can then affect the quality of our sleep that night. If this vicious cycle goes on for a longer period of time it can start to negatively impact our health and happiness.
There are many reasons for disturbed sleep and ultimately the underlying cause needs to be addressed. Although they may be a quick fix, pharmaceutical sleeping tablets are not ideal. They can become addictive and can affect clarity of mind the next day amongst other side effects. Below are natural ideas to help improve sleep by relaxing the nervous system and encouraging the mind to let go:
1. EMPTY THE MIND
When we lie down to sleep the brain downloads all the thoughts we need to think about. It can do this because we are no longer busy with other tasks. This “download” can distract us from sleep. Before you try to sleep, write down all your thoughts to empty the mind. Let the mind know that now is the time to give you everything it wants you to hear, and it has your complete attention. Keep writing, even if it doesn’t make sense, just give the mind free rein and keep going until there’s nothing left and the mind is quiet. Thank the mind and then let it know that now it is sleep time.
2. DEEP SLEEP TECHNIQUE
After emptying the mind, can help to give the brain a boring job to focus on and also give the body a command. Try breathing in the word ‘deep’ and breathing out the word ‘sleep’. These words are not said out loud, they are said in the mind. As you are laying there with your eyes closed, breathe in ‘deep’ and breathe out ‘sleep’. It needs to be as if nothing else exists other than these two words. As soon as you’re
aware that you're thinking of something else, remind yourself that nothing exists other than (breathe in) ‘deep’ (breathe out) ‘sleep’. This technique can be used whether issues are with falling asleep initially or waking through the night and not being able to get back to sleep. The only way this technique won’t work is if you let your mind drift from the breathing of these two words.
3. MAXIMUM 1 COFFEE PER DAY (BEFORE 12 NOON)
Even if you don’t feel the stimulating effects of caffeine, it does impact your physiology and can increase mind alertness. If sleep issues are present, no caffeine should be consumed after midday. This includes tea, hot chocolate, and soft drinks. Herbal teas are a better option in the afternoon or evening.
4. EXERCISE
Daily exercise will help the body de–stress and pave the way for better sleep consistently. Aim for 10,000 steps per day.
5. MEDITATION
Daily meditation can help train the mind to rise above thought and be still. There are some wonderful free apps such as ‘Insight Timer’ that offer thousands of free meditations to help build your personal practice. Some people prefer nature sounds or music and others prefer guided meditation and this app covers it all. There are also thousands of meditations specifically tailored to promote sleep.
6. HERBAL MEDICINE AND SUPPLEMENTS
Many people think melatonin is the magic supplement for sleep, however it is only going to work for people that have a melatonin deficiency. If the sleeping issues are not due to insufficient melatonin, then taking melatonin won’t help. Magnesium in therapeutic doses can help relax muscles and the nervous system, to encourage a better quality sleep. There are many forms of magnesium available and the most effective one for you is best prescribed by a healthcare practitioner trained in nutritional medicine. Many
people who don’t get results with magnesium are taking an incorrect form and dose.
There are some potent medicinal herbs that support the body to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep longer yet won’t leave you feeling lethargic the next day. A herbal medicine practitioner can prescribe the best option and has access to practitioner–only ranges, which are of superior quality and contain higher doses of active ingredients.
Some B vitamin formulas can be stimulating so are best taken in the morning rather than at night.
7. HYDRATION
If the body is not hydrated, no matter how relaxed you may feel, sleep won’t come easily. To avoid going to bed with a full bladder, try and consume plenty of water before 4pm. If nothing else is working to help you sleep, try having a drink of water.
8. BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS
As with hydration, if the body is hungry it’s going to be difficult to induce sleep. It’s also not healthy to go to bed with a huge belly of food. If a big meal is consumed, it’s better to go for a walk or sit upright and digest before laying down to sleep.
Food and alcohol containing high levels of sugar can negatively impact sleep and lead to a more restless night.
High–tryptophan–rich foods can help some people sleep as tryptophan is converted to precursors that form serotonin and melatonin, which help the body relax. Foods high in tryptophan include turkey/chicken, banana, dairy (yoghurt, cheese, milk) nuts and seeds.
It’s important to address the underlying issue leading to sleep disturbance, as well as finding a longer term solution that doesn’t negatively impact waking hours.

Internal blinds are the most popular window furnishing in Australia and for good reason.
Blinds give privacy and help with energy costs, keeping the heat and light out in summer and warmth inside in winter. And they look great, dressing up a room with many colour and texture fabrics to choose from. You can buy custom–made blinds from a local manufacturer like Premier Shades or off– the– shelf blinds from your hardware store or online DIY store.
SO WHY BUY CUSTOM–MADE?
Unlike hardware or online stores, our professional consultants visit and give you options and solutions specific to your home and requirements.
Your local hardware and online DIY store requires you to (i) measure, (ii) remove old blinds and (iii) install your blinds. Cheaper yes, but you get what you pay for and do you want to be climbing ladders with a tape–measure or screw–driver in hand?
Your windows are custom–made. They come in different sizes and shapes, often not square. Measuring for blinds is hard! Leave that to professionals like us.
Not all blinds are the same. Off–the–shelf and DIY blinds are cheap because they compromise on the quality of aluminium top tube, bottom bar, chain, motor and fabric that are all important for a long service life and good aesthetic. Cheap blinds don’t last.
We only employ trained and professional consultants and installers.
And we have licensed carpentry and metal fabricator tradespeople on staff.
Premier Shades has been making and selling blinds on the Central Coast for over 30 years, longer than your hardware or online stores. And as a local business we support local manufacturing and the community through a local hospital charity.
Custom–made blinds are not as expensive as you might think. A quote and measure is free.
We’ll remove and recycle your old blinds.
We can help you navigate many blind options: roller blinds, verticals, romans, venetians, honeycomb blinds. We also make dual (day/night) blinds, and can option silent bottom bars to stop them banging in the breeze. We can help with tricky fabrics for light filtering, sunscreen and different applications, like media rooms or bathrooms.
Custom–made blinds, from quote to install, are fast and can take as little as 7 days.
We’re automation experts and can motorise your blinds – the first step towards a truly smart home.
Interestingly, blinds over sliding doors is our most popular web blog. We’re experts at solving practical questions like this or other questions like the best blinds for a wet area.

FINANCIAL CHALLENGES forcouples
BY SOPHIE DOYLE, RETIREMENT AND FINANCIAL AGED CARE SPECIALIST
With people living longer, there’s a growing trend to form new partnerships later in life. This can stem from various reasons including relationship breakdowns or the loss of a spouse. A new relationship can lead to rediscovering love, bring companionship and support, but it may also bring financial challenges.
Second marriages may present additional financial challenges when balancing day–to–day expenses with implications for aged care funding and estate plans. You may not share finances equally, but Centrelink/DVA will assess your obligations as if you do.
Some couples may be willing to share a life but prefer to keep finances separate, so inheritances can pass to

their own children and family. If you and your partner enter the relationship with differing levels of savings and assets, as a couple you will need to decide how to split or share resources. You may also need to decide whose home to live in or whether to buy a new home.
Balancing personal goals as a couple with estate planning becomes crucial. Things you may wish to consider include how to ensure your partner is looked after if something happens to you, while also wanting to safeguard inheritances for your own children. This can present a delicate balancing act. Compounding this challenge is the

Navigating the complexities of aged care financing and estate planning in the context of second marriages demands tailored guidance
From a Centrelink and aged care view, two people living together in a relationship are assessed as a couple. Assets and income are combined and then split equally – regardless of who owns what or how you want to divide your finances.
Whether two people are considered to be a couple depends on five aspects, including:
Financial aspects.
Nature of the household and how household chores are shared.
Social aspects and how the two people present to family and friends.
Any sexual relationship.
Commitment to a permanent and ongoing relationship on an intimate level.
No single factor is definitive in determining status as a couple. An assessor may look at the facts of the case and interview the people involved as well as friends and family to determine whether the two people live separate or shared lives.
NOTE. If you receive a Centrelink/ Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) benefit and your relationship status changes, you need to notify Centrelink/DVA and update your records.
THE IMPACT ON AGED CARE
The implications of relationship status extends beyond domestic arrangements into the realm of aged care financing.
Regardless if you are self–funded retirees or recipients of a Centrelink/ Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) benefit, your combined assets and income as a couple form the basis for aged care fee assessments. Potentially this could lead to financial stress for one spouse necessitating assistance from the other. Strategic financial planning becomes imperative to mitigate such challenges, ensuring equitable outcomes for both parties.
For example, a spouse staying at home may use some of their assets to pay the accommodation costs as a
lump sum (Refundable Accommodation Deposit) for their spouse moving into residential care. When the spouse in care dies, this money will eventually be returned to the estate of the spouse who was in care, rather than the spouse who made the payment. This means the money may find its way into the other family’s hands, which may not have been the intention.
Navigating the complexities of aged care financing and estate planning in the context of second marriages demands tailored guidance, to help navigate the rules and consider strategies that are as fair as possible to both members of the couple. This may also help to minimise family conflicts at a later date.
If you want to talk through your options, call our office on 02 4325 0884 to arrange an appointment.

WHAT DEFINES A COUPLE
Dry Eye Solution –Apatient’sperspective
Tom Mitchell, a senior citizen from Newcastle, NSW, has been battling with dry eyes for years. Here, he tells us his story and why he recommends Dry Eye Solution.
I have suffered from watery and red eyes and my vision was often blurry. Sometimes it was difficult to watch TV. The medications and drops I’ve tried only offered temporary relief, leaving my eyes red and irritated. One day, while flipping through the local Newcastle Magazine, I stumbled upon an advertisement for Dry Eye Solution in Newcastle. Intrigued, I decided to give it a shot.
My first consultation at Dry Eye
Solution was nothing short of exceptional. The optometrist conducted a thorough assessment of my general health, lifestyle, diet and performed a detailed examination of my eyes. The scans of my eyelids revealed something intriguing –the glands responsible for producing tears were not straight. This was preventing proper oil release for eye lubrication.
The optometrist, with her wealth of experience, made me feel at ease throughout the consultation, keeping me informed at every step.
Following her advice, I decided to proceed with my treatment plan, which involved a unique light treatment (Intense Pulse Light) to correct the ‘crooked’ glands situation. The optometrist explained the IPL treatment process and how it enhances eye lubrication by reducing inflammation.

It was reassuring to know that the IPL devices used by Dry Eye Solution have both FDA & TGA approval for treating Dry Eye. I immediately booked the first of four sessions.
During my first treatment, the optometrist meticulously prepared my eyes, ensuring adequate protection with eye shields. The IPL treatment itself was surprisingly comfortable, and I could even see the yellow light through my closed eyelids and shields. After a short

The optometrist then expressed my glands to unblock them, so that my tears can get out. She showed me the scans post–treatment, and the immediate improvement was evident. Within a few days, I noticed a significant reduction in redness and watery eyes. I was genuinely impressed!
The follow–up on the Dry Eye Solution advertisement has proven to be a game–changer for me. I can’t wait for my next treatment, and I’m grateful for the fantastic staff and their professionalism. Now I can see

Matters of life & love
BY SARAH TOLMIE
DearlyBeloved
OK. I am going to deliver some hard truth bombs with all my love and compassion and well–meaning encouragement. Yes! Yes, yes, you may indeed be disappointing them and abandoning them, and, they will get over it. And, they will help you, you just need to ask and plan it.
Of course, that will be their first reaction and instinct – to think, ‘what about me?” Bless them! Remember yourself as a young adult and understand that perspective has been their only orientation in life until now, being the recipient and beneficiaries of all your care, effort and energy. They’ll come around because they love and care for you too and your wellbeing and happiness is within their capacity to embrace.
I see what you are facing as a rite of passage. Our journey through life and love will passage us through many changes and evolvings. In the study of cultures and society (Social Anthropology), there are many clear and identified rites of passage – birth, menarche, adolescent initiation into adulthood, marriage and death are some obvious ones – and there are less obvious ones, which still follow a similar and essential role.
Rites of passage signify and support TRANSFORMATION. What all ‘rites of passage’ have in common is their task to move us from one state of being to another. They usher and passage us through hard/important/significant and/or unavoidable periods of change and challenge in our life. They may have formalised stages, challenges, activities (even ordeals) and also many rituals. Often ending in celebration and re–integration you’ve achieved arriving at your new life status. This may be one of them, and not just for you!
READER QUESTION: “We are planning downsizing our large family home as we enter our ‘third–age’. The task feels overwhelming but we know it is the right decision. However our kids, who are all adults living out of home currently, are disappointed. They love knowing home is always there for them. They love leaving their stuff here between moves and travels. It feels like we are abandoning them. How do I get peace with this and their blessing. And their HELP to get it all done too!?”
Rites of passage provide support and guidance and enable your continued connection as part of family and community. They mark endings and beginnings – completions and renewals – for all involved. Once a rite of passage is enacted, it cannot be reversed or undone. You cannot return to how you were. All are changed.
You are entering a new stage of life – moving into your ‘third–age’. Literally moving too. The ordeal of downsizing has many stages – curating your stuff; closing down of one home; selling, moving, buying; and entering all the other new beginnings. It is asking of not only you – but all the family around you – to re–orient to this change in status, place and way of life. It is not meant to be easy, but it is important and necessary. And it is good!
It is also sounds like it is the time for your adult kids to make passage into a new independence and maturity. Their participation in the ‘discomfort’ that this change will demand of them and its effect on their life, choices and pathways, is also essential. This too, will evolve them into a new age and stage and set of capacities.
Small confession – my husband and I are also on a similar trajectory. Our plan is to downsize in the next 12–18 months. Son no.2 who is still at home has plenty of warning. I honour the overwhelm it can present and also share in the glimmer of ‘newness and next’ that is exciting and freeing.
One thing we are doing – which feels like an ordeal (but a good one) is starting a ‘slow lava flow’ from one end of the house to the other of ‘Swedish Death Cleaning’. We are tackling a room at a time for deep cleaning and excavating of stuff. We have not just our sons but
a community collective to call upon for help because so many of our peers are in the same boat and we are all helping each other. Call on your ‘gang’ to lend a hand. That’s what community is about.
Rites of passage provide support and guidance and enable your continued connection as part of family and community. They mark endings and beginnings, completions and renewals, for all involved
And all good rites of passage end in celebrations and ceremonies. Be that an end–of–home farewell or party or even a bonfire! And a welcome to the neighbourhood, house warming, celebration of new life shindig.
I wish you well. It will be fantastic.
Much love

EMBRACING LIFE AND COMMUNITY: HOW ADSSI
ENHANCES SENIORS’ LIVES ON THE CENTRAL COAST
As the golden years approach, the saying “life’s too short to stay at home” resonates deeper. Seniors on the Central Coast have the opportunity to embody this vibrant spirit through Adssi In–home Support, who believes that ageing should be celebrated with zest and social connection.
Adssi has got all the bases covered. They offer Social Support services through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP), which are designed to make life better for seniors. They believe that independence doesn’t mean being lonely, so they create opportunities for seniors to socialise while having their everyday needs met.
Their Social Support services support seniors in participating in group activities and outings. These are not your average get–togethers; they are carefully curated experiences that cater to the diverse interests of older people. They host day trips, casual luncheons, movie outings, visits to botanical gardens, specialised groups, like men’s circles, variety days filled with unexpected joys, and even cultural escapes to art galleries. The essence of these activities is not just recreation but forging lasting friendships and encouraging community ties.
With individual social support, Adssi focuses on personal connection.
Seniors who might struggle with mobility or lack the confidence to join larger groups can receive one–on–one attention. This tailored approach empowers them to venture out for shopping, appointments, or enjoy companionship at home – all facilitated by caring Adssi staff members.

What to do with your old films, movies, tapes, slides and prints
As we get ready to retire and downsize, the question of how to preserve family history may arise. The older recordings are bulky and can now be replaced by digital copies at a fraction of the size. Camera House can help with this transition.
The generations born in the late 1940s and the 1950s have seen family history go from Brownie Box cameras to 35mm cameras with slides, then prints, and now to digital. In those years, films have also changed from early 8mm, Super 8 to various forms of tape and now to hard drives and removable media. Each of these older forms of recording
has rapidly evolved into the next leaving the family with boxes of slides, tapes, prints, negatives and older media cards. These generally take up space around the house and are in danger of being lost, particularly on the Coast, as mould eats its way through these precious records. Camera House owner, John Ralph, has experienced this problem himself with damaged slides and tapes. This has motivated him to expand the services of the Fountain Plaza store, to provide increased archiving services with lower prices for bulk orders. Slides are prepared in a carousel and then copied using modern digital equipment, sourced from overseas, giving higher resolution than previously commonly available. By customers filling the
carousels themselves, the price is kept to a minimum.
Greatest popularity has been for transferring tapes to DVD and once digitized, conversion to files that can be stored on USB or computer and viewed on current Smart TVs. Tape conversion was so popular that the store now has quadrupled the number of transfer stations to keep waiting times down. People are finding that many older photos have been damaged through
16 ON THE COAST – OVER 55 JOHN RALPH’S CAMERA HOUSE
the years. Either damp and mould have allowed fungus to grow or exposure to light has caused the colours to fade. This has created demand for local restoration services.
Pictures of all sizes can be improved. They are scanned or re–photographed and then digitally enhanced to fix colours, physical damage and even add or remove people and items from the final picture. The new picture can be enlarged from the original to produce wall art and canvases.
Frequent questions asked of the store involve film. “Do you sell film?” – Yes. “Do you develop film?” – also Yes. “Do you scan film to digital?” – Yes. Whilst film is harder to get nowadays the store searches far and wide to keep stocks up. Also the in–store film developing is very popular especially with young people wishing to try out “Grandpa's camera”.
The film can be developed and either printed or scanned to USB or Dropbox. And now with travel staring up again, the number one question that is asked –“Do you do Passport Photos?” – Yes.
They are done in the in–store studio, from baby to adult, including all overseas passports and are generally ready in about 10 minutes.

A Unique Boutique Retirement Haven – WATERFORD
Transitioning to a retirement village marks a significant milestone in one’s life journey, representing a shift towards embracing newfound freedom and community connection.
In 2001, Director Mark Kamper, a down–to–earth sheep and cattle farmer from Bathurst, along with a group of long–time business colleagues and friends, founded Waterford with a vision beyond mere village living. Their aim was to establish a quality, friendly community that enables residents to lead enjoyable and fulfilling lives by providing a comfortable living environment with a strong sense of community. Speaking with any of the residents there, you will find that they have certainly achieved their goal.
Central to the essence of Waterford life is the feeling of belonging and camaraderie nurtured within a friendly social environment. Residents forge meaningful connections, share experiences, and build a supportive network that enhances their overall wellbeing. Unlike the isolation often associated with ageing, Waterford offers a social hub where friendships flourish and a sense of community thrives.
Waterford residents enjoy active and fulfilling lifestyles with access to numerous recreational activities and amenities. The Community Lodge serves as a central point for leisure and
social interaction and boasts a beautiful indoor heated pool, library, beauty salon, gymnasium, craft room, treatment room, cafe, plus a spacious lounge with fireplace. These offerings promote physical fitness, mental stimulation, and a sense of vitality, enabling residents to lead engaging and purposeful lives.
Convenience is another hallmark of Waterford life. Situated adjacent to the vibrant Kincumber Shopping Village, residents enjoy easy access to essential services and amenities, including supermarket, eateries, cafes and post office. This proximity fosters independence and empowers residents to maintain their desired level of engagement with the local community.
Security and peace of mind are also paramount. With dedicated security patrols and a gated entrance, residents can rest assured knowing that their safety and wellbeing are a top priority. This sense of security extends beyond the physical realm, as the maintenance–free lifestyle allows retirees the freedom to travel and explore without the worry of home upkeep.
Waterford encourages residents to embrace a simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle. Freed from the burdens of home ownership and maintenance responsibilities, residents can redirect their time and energy toward pursuing hobbies, interests, and passions. Whether it’s exploring nearby walking tracks, participating in community events, or enjoying leisurely pursuits, Waterford offers the freedom to live life on one’s own terms.
Ultimately, the true beauty of Waterford lies in the intangible benefits it offers. It’s about embracing a new chapter of life filled with meaningful connections, security, and the freedom to live life to the fullest. So, as you consider your retirement options, remember that the true value of Waterford extends far beyond its amenities – it’s a pathway to a fulfilling and enriching lifestyle that celebrates the joys of ageing gracefully.

WATERFORD RETIREMENT VILLAGE
My lovedone has lost capacity, what next?
Capacity refers to your ability to consider and understand the decisions you are making and their consequences. When drafting and signing your estate documents, to have capacity, you must be able to understand the nature and terms of the documents, appreciate the effect of the documents and communicate your choices to your solicitor.
For estate planning, in determining capacity, you must be able to satisfy the solicitor that you have testamentary capacity. This means that you can understand and describe your asset pool, what you own, your family – who may have a potential claim to your estate –and why you have chosen to include certain people as your trustee, executor and beneficiaries. Testamentary capacity also requires you to be able to demonstrate that you are not under the influence or coercion of others when making the will.
Too often, we see clients bury their heads in the sand following a diagnosis, namely, conditions that may have commenced impact on cognitive functioning. The diagnosis per se will not limit capacity, rather, the nature and extent of the impact of the condition must be determined.
WHY IS CAPACITY IMPORTANT?
Capacity is important as your estate documents must reflect your wishes and be your own free will. A Court may hold that your will or Power of Attorney is invalid if it is found that you lacked capacity when drafting the documents. If your will is found to be invalid, your estate may not be distributed in accordance with your wishes, but rather the laws of intestacy. Proper estate planning is crucial to protect your assets and prevent your assets from being misused or distributed against your wishes.
In NSW, it is presumed that a person has capacity unless proven otherwise. However, disability, illness or age–related cognitive disability may impact your capacity. If your solicitor or family and friends have doubts about capacity an assessment may be required.
WHAT TO DO NEXT?
Book an appointment with a solicitor urgently. If there are any capacity concerns, please let the solicitor know what the concern is, and, importantly, the nature and extent of the impact of the capacity–related concerns. The solicitor will then send a formal request to the appropriate doctor or specialist to undertake a capacity assessment. If the doctor approves the capacity assessment, the solicitor will proceed with the preparation of any required documents.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE DOCTOR DETERMINES THAT CAPACITY IS NOT SATISFACTORY?
An application can be made to the NCAT Guardianship Division (ie, the Tribunal) for a Guardianship Order and/or a Financial Management Order. Orders can be made for a loved one to make decisions or for the NSW Trustee & Guardian to be appointed.

HAVE YOU GOT
BY CARIN CLEGG, ACCREDITED PRACTISING DIETITIAN
These days it seems common for people to get various symptoms from the foods they eat and to be cutting out foods. However, foods are complex and many contain similar components. It is important to have a diagnosis as dietary management differs. Let’s understand what the most common food–related conditions are.
COELIAC DISEASE
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition, often presenting as gut symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea or nutrient malabsorption, such as iron deficiency with associated symptoms (poor concentration, fatigue, poor sleep).
Gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and the protein avenin in oats, causes damage to the small bowel. If coeliac disease is suspected, tests must be done with adequate amounts of gluten in the diet to confirm or rule it out. The management of coeliac disease is a strict gluten–free diet.
More information can be found at www.coeliac.org.au/
FOOD ALLERGY
dietaryissues?
The word ‘allergy’ gets thrown around a lot, usually in substitution for the word ‘reaction.’ However, not all reactions are allergies. A food allergy is usually an immediate reaction to a specific protein in the food where the IgE antibodies in one’s immune system overreact to something that would usually be considered safe. Reactions can range from mild to life–threatening (anaphylaxis requiring adrenalin treatment).
Skin prick tests or RAST blood tests can indicate the likelihood of allergy. An immunologist is usually required to interpret the results with knowledge of a detailed history, then provide a diagnosis and guide dietary management.
For more information see www.allergy.org.au
FOOD INTOLERANCE
In the case of food intolerance, food components a person is intolerant to can be consumed without symptoms depending on their tolerance level, how much is eaten and how often it is eaten.
Food chemical intolerance
Usually occurs when there is a delayed reaction to one or more natural or
artificial food chemicals or components common to many different foods. Symptoms can change throughout life, and tolerance levels can be affected by stress, hormone changes, infection and inflammation.
Food chemical intolerance can affect more than one body system. Some symptoms of food chemical intolerance include:
eczema, unexplained rashes, hives, itchiness, skin swellings.
reflux, IBS, abdominal pain, bloating, excess wind, diarrhoea, constipation. non–allergic rhinitis or hayfever symptoms.
fatigue, muscle aches, sleep disturbance, altered mood, poor concentration, hyperactivity, headaches/migraines, anxiety, and depression.
Foods/food chemicals people react to include wheat, dairy, soy, salicylates, amines, glutamates, and certain additives. The RPAH Elimination Diet with Challenges is the gold standard test to 1) diagnose food intolerance and 2) identify food triggers with challenges. After this process–diet variety is increased to manage symptoms.

Lactose intolerance
Presents as abdominal pain or discomfort and diarrhoea after consuming dairy products containing lactose. Limiting lactose in the diet (including the use of lactose–free dairy products) will stop symptoms from occurring.
People with lactose intolerance can consume dairy foods symptom free by consulting with their dietitian.
Medical tests for diagnosis is not as helpful as dietary testing, which assists people to understand if lactose is their trigger, how much they can consume and how often.
It is important to understand the reason for lactose intolerance, as any damage to the gut will result in lactose intolerance until the gut heals.
FODMAPs incomplete absorption FODMAPs stands for fermentable –oligo–di–mono–saccharides and polyols. FODMAPs are digested by the microbes in our gut and create gas, which is usually reabsorbed by the gut and breathed out. However, in some individuals, this gas is not reabsorbed from the gut and causes symptoms such as bloating, distention, pain, diarrhoea and constipation.
In everybody’s gut, there is a threshold at which having too many FODMAPs can cause problems. The FODMAPs diet is promoted as assisting with IBS. However, it is often the
underlying irritation to the nerves of the gut (visceral hypersensitivity) caused often by food chemical intolerance that contributes to symptoms. Adding gas–producing foods (FODMAPs) tends to further add to the symptoms.

Whatever the food issue, an experienced Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) can help in several ways to:
conduct a nutrition assessment.
give dietary education on the condition, diet and testing.
advise on appropriate dietary modification according to medical advice or evidence–based practice.
assist with identifying food triggers quickly and accurately.
ensure foods are not avoided unnecessarily, particularly for a long time.
ensure nutritional adequacy, preventing deficiencies (commonly seen when changing the diet without dietitian support) and chronic disease.
provide ongoing guidance and support with dietary changes.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CONJUNCTIVITIS
BY DR NICHOLAS ALTUNEG, BEHAVIOURAL OPTOMETRIST
Conjunctivitis, commonly called "pink eye", is a widespread eye condition that impacts people of all age groups, from toddlers to seniors. Whether you’ve personally experienced conjunctivitis or have a friend or family member who has, you know how frustrating it is to deal with.
Despite how common it is, many individuals remain unclear about what conjunctivitis is, how it occurs, and how to seek proper treatment. So, let’s look at the causes and symptoms, and provide insights about effective treatment.
WHAT IS CONJUNCTIVITIS?
Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, a delicate and transparent layer that envelops the white portion of the eye (sclera) and lines the inner surfaces of the eyelids. One or both eyes may be watery, sore or itchy, sometimes with sticky white or yellow discharge. The affected eye, or eyes, will also look puffy.
The term “pink eye” can be traced back to the visible redness or pinkish
tint that becomes apparent when the blood vessels within the conjunctiva become dilated and inflamed. However, it’s important to note that not all cases of conjunctivitis result in the characteristic redness; the severity and manifestation of symptoms can differ.
HOW DOES CONJUNCTIVITIS HAPPEN?
Conjunctivitis can occur for various reasons, each with its own set of causes and risk factors. Understanding these causes plays a vital role in determining the right treatment and mitigating the transmission of the condition.
Viral conjunctivitis: This form of pink eye is typically caused by viruses, such as adenoviruses responsible for various respiratory illnesses. It can also result from the same virus responsible for the common cold. Viral conjunctivitis is exceptionally contagious and can spread through contact with infected eye secretions or contaminated surfaces. It often starts in one eye and may progress to the other.
Bacterial conjunctivitis: Bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or Haemophilus influenzae commonly cause bacterial conjunctivitis. This type of pink eye can result from poor hygiene, using contaminated cosmetics, poor contact lens hygiene, or coming into contact with an infected person’s eye discharge. It typically affects one eye but can spread to the other.
Allergic conjunctivitis: Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when the conjunctiva reacts to allergens, like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain chemicals. It is not contagious and often affects both eyes simultaneously. Seasonal allergies are a common trigger for this form of conjunctivitis.
Chemical conjunctivitis: Exposure to irritating substances, such as chlorine in swimming pools, smog, or harsh chemicals, can lead to chemical conjunctivitis. This form of pink eye typically impacts both eyes and occurs due to direct contact with the irritant.

RECOGNISING THE SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of conjunctivitis can differ based on the underlying cause, but typical indicators encompass:
Redness or pink discolouration in the affected eye(s).
Itchiness or irritation.
Watery or mucous discharge from the eye(s).
Gritty or sandy sensation in the eye(s).
Swelling of the eyelids.
Increased sensitivity to light (photophobia).
Crusty eyelids, especially in the morning (common in bacterial conjunctivitis).
It’s important to note that symptoms like eye pain and vision changes are less common in conjunctivitis and may suggest a more serious eye condition, necessitating immediate medical attention.
WHO TO CONSULT FOR TREATMENT?
Successful treatment depends on identifying the type of conjunctivitis and treating the root cause. Many people will go to the pharmacist and try different eye drops, hoping that their conjunctivitis will be cured quickly. Unfortunately, the reality is that if you are not treating the right thing, then the conjunctivitis will worsen and I have seen this occur many times in clinical practice. In severe cases, conjunctivitis could be sight–threatening, therefore not seeking medical help means that you are taking a needless risk with your eyes.
An optometrist is your go–to professional when dealing with conjunctivitis, regardless of its cause. They can accurately diagnose and manage various forms of pink eye and can offer guidance on effectively relieving discomfort and managing symptoms so that you can get better faster.
PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF CONJUNCTIVITIS
To prevent the spread of conjunctivitis, especially in cases of viral or bacterial origin, follow these essential steps:
Practice good hygiene: Regularly cleanse your hands with soap and water and avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands.
Avoid sharing personal items: Refrain from sharing towels, wash cloths, eye makeup, contact lenses, – or their storage cases – with others.
Practice proper contact lens hygiene: If you often wear contact lenses, adhere to strict hygiene practices, such as disinfecting lenses and cases regularly. If you suspect you have conjunctivitis, switch to glasses until the condition clears.
Isolate yourself: If you have viral or bacterial conjunctivitis, limit close contact with others, particularly in
crowded environments, to prevent the spread of the infection.
Dispose of tissues and cotton balls properly: If you use tissues or cotton balls to clean discharge from your eyes, dispose of them in a lined trash bin to avoid contaminating other surfaces.
WRAPPING UP THE DISCUSSION ON CONJUNCTIVITIS
Understanding the type of conjunctivitis, or pink eye, you have is crucial for seeking appropriate treatment and preventing its spread to others. Whether it’s viral, bacterial, allergic, or chemical conjunctivitis, consulting an optometrist is key to managing the condition effectively and safeguarding your eye health.
By maintaining good hygiene practices and implementing preventive measures, you can decrease the likelihood of contracting and transmitting pink eye, thereby contributing to better eye health for yourself and those around you.

Coral
Cruising
Forget the pokies, the waterslides, and the Pina Coladas. If you’re looking for a cruise that doesn’t insult your intelligence, Coral Expeditions is the one for you.
Coral Expeditions is a cruise for grown–ups who love nature, culture, and history. It’s a 10–night adventure crawling along the Kimberley coastline, one of the last places on Earth where you can feel like a real explorer. You’ll see ancient rock art, stunning waterfalls, exotic wildlife, and learn from the best guides in the business.
We join Coral for their famous Kimberley Cruise, which kicks off from Broome, a town that used to make pearls before it made tourists.
After a safety drill that makes us feel very safe indeed, we enjoy a 5–star dinner on the aft deck, where we meet some of our fellow cruisers and watch the sun go down over the copper–coloured ocean. The service is impeccable, the food is divine, and the company is great, with mostly seniors on board. Indeed, a safety role call reads like the character list from a Victorian novel: Margaret, Edward, Charles, Elizabeth. No Jaykob, Xavyn, Jaxsyn, Zyler here.
Over dinner we meet Nick and Sharon, retired farmers with a property in NSW the size of Singapore. They tell us they hate cruises, but they make an exception for this one. They also tell us a lot about their sheep. A lot!
NAVIGATING WITH SEAS WITH STYLE
WORDS BY DORIAN MODE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYDIA THORPE
Every night, we have a briefing from our expedition leader, Anita, who has a PhD in something impressive. So your tour guide isn’t the dancer from the cabaret. She tells us what we have seen and what we are going to see the next day. She also tells us some fascinating facts and stories about the Kimberley region, which make us feel wonderfully cultured and smart.
The next day, we board the Xplorer, a specially designed tender that can navigate shallow waters and land on beaches like troops on D–Day. Here we head to the King George River, the largest river in the Kimberley. Approaching the mouth of the river, we see a towering sandstone cliff that looks like giant pieces of toast. We enter the river and cruise along its winding course, admiring the scenery and the wildlife. We spot crocodiles, sea eagles, rock wallabies, the works.
When we reach the end of the river, we are greeted by the majestic sight of the King George Falls, the highest twin falls in Australia. They are positively gushing with water from the wet season, creating a thunderous roar and a fine mist. We get as close as we can to the falls, feeling the spray on our faces and the thrill in our hearts. Some of us opt for the Kimberly Shower as the tender drives under falls. Splash!
We return to the ship, where we are treated to a mouth–watering lunch of tiger prawns, oysters, and pan–grilled snapper, accompanied by fresh salads and bread. We savour the flavours and
the killer views, feeling very lucky and satisfied.
If you’re looking for a cruise that doesn’t insult your intelligence, Coral Expeditions is the one for you
The next day, we visit the Mitchell Plateau, one of the most remote and spectacular areas of the Kimberley. Here we take a scenic helicopter flight over the plateau, (I’m scared of heights, by the way) which is covered with lush green vegetation and dotted with waterholes. We land near the Mitchell Falls, a four–tiered waterfall that cascades into deep pools. Walking along a trail that leads us to the falls, we have a refreshing swim and a picnic lunch. No crocs up here unless you’re wearing them. We also see some ancient rock art, depicting Wandjina figures, the ancestral beings of the local Indigenous folk.
We motor back to the ship, where we are welcomed with a delicious afternoon tea of scones, jam, and cream, as well as a selection of cakes and biscuits. Here we relax on the deck, chatting with our new chums and generally sharing our impressions of the day.
The next day, we explore the Montgomery Reef: a massive coral reef that rises and falls with the tide. We time
28 ON THE COAST – OVER 55
our visit to coincide with the low tide, when the reef emerges from the water Atlantis–like and creates a spectacular sight. Gosh, we see waterfalls, lagoons, and sandbars, teeming with marine life. We see rays, sharks, and fish and of course, turtles. Indeed, our crew give us a ‘turtle money back’ guarantee if we don’t see one.
We return to the ship, where we are served a sumptuous dinner of roast lamb, mashed potatoes, and steamed vegetables, followed by a decadent chocolate cake. We enjoy the food and the company, feeling happy and full and sun touched.
The next day, we visit the Horizontal Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world. The falls are created by the massive tidal movements that squeeze through two narrow gaps in the McLarty Range. The result is a horizontal waterfall that changes direction with the tide. We board a fast boat that takes us through the falls, giving us an adrenaline rush and a splash of water. We also see a huge whirlpool that forms near the falls, swirling with power and mystery.
This was an expedition cruise, and we loved every minute of it. So, if you’re looking for a cruise that will blow your mind, not your budget, consider Coral Expeditions
Returning to the ship, we are offered a light lunch as well as a glass of beer or jolly posh wine. We toast to our amazing experience and our wonderful, chilled crew, feeling very grateful and exhilarated.
At lunch, we meet charming kiwi winemakers Linda and Graeme. Over melt–in–your–mouth pork belly, they speak of their grandchildren, Ocean and Suede. Or was this the interior design pallet of their rumpus room?
The next day, we visit the Raft Point, a sacred site for the Worrorra people.

We climb to a rocky outcrop, where we see a cave with some of the finest examples of Gwion Gwion art, also known as Bradshaw art. These are some of the oldest and most mysterious rock paintings in the world, dating back tens of thousands of years. They depict elegant human figures, animals, and geometric patterns, in vivid colours and intricate details. We learn about the stories and meanings behind the art, and feel a connection with the ancient culture that created it. We even see a drawing of a Tasmanian Devil!
We return to the ship, where we are presented with a lavish buffet of local and international dishes, such as barramundi, beef rendang, chicken curry, rice, noodles, and salads. Psst! the tucker is outstanding on this cruise.
The next day, we visit the Lacepede Islands, a group of four low–lying islands that are an important breeding ground for seabirds and turtles. Here we see
thousands of brown boobies, terns, and frigatebirds, nesting and wheeling around the islands.
We return to the ship, where we are treated to a farewell dinner. We celebrate our last night on board, feeling sad and happy at the same time. Cocktails help!
The next day, we arrive back in Broome, where we say goodbye to our crew and our new friends. We have experienced the best of the Kimberley, and we have memories and photos to last a lifetime.
This was not your average cruise. It really surprised us. This was an expedition cruise, and we loved every minute of it. So, if you’re looking for a cruise that will blow your mind, not your budget, consider Coral Expeditions.
