IT’S PLAYOFFS! The Hornets started the quest for the Schmalz Cup with a first round sweep of the Huntsville Otters. The boys are looking to repeat as Carruthers Division champs for the first time since the 16 and 17 seasons. Check the website for dates and results as the playoffs move forward. The winners from the Hockey Day in Alliston draw recently spent their day with the Hornets enjoying Pizza and time with the Hornets’ players in the heat of the Nest. It wraps up another great day of celebrating our local community and the youth who are participating in our game. Thank you to everyone who took part in such a great event. On Feb. 22, the Hornets players and staff took part in the Coldest Night Of The Year walk to support our local emergency shelters. We were excited to be a part of the night and it was a great success. Congratulations to the organizers of the event who did an amazing job raising money for such an important community initiative.

As we move toward the spring/summer season, preparations for the next season have already begun. Please check our website for details of rookie camp as well as our third annual Sand Smash beach volleyball tournament. Any local businesses looking for a fun team builder should consider our business night on June 11th. The main tournament will be happening June 12th and 13th at the Old Alliston Arena. Anyone looking for registration information should check the website. Teams fill up fast so check often and register early. We hope you will join us at the rink as we chase down the Schmalz Cup!

Barrie Rugby: The Fastest Growing Rugby Club in Canada By Adam Murday, Brandon Kirkwood, Photo Credits Barrie Rugby Club Five years ago, Barrie Rugby made a conscious decision to commit to doing their part to improve the rugby landscape in Canada the only way that a small club can at the grass roots level; by increasing participation and focusing on the youth. Barrie committed to making decisions that will benefit the entire rugby community. Since that time, the club has seen growth and development at every level and in almost every way thanks to the amazing parents and volunteers who offer an awesome summer experience that is attracting some of the best athletes around. With a focus on the youth, the minis (12 and under) side of the club has exploded! The last two summers have seen over 150 minis playing rugby each summer. These massive numbers have allowed the club to offer a house league which has made weekly practices significantly more exciting and competitive for our young ruggers. By reaching out to elementary schools to promote the game, Simcoe County has seen a boom in elementary school rugby, with 80 schools offering some form of rugby to their students. The bi-product of this increase in participation in youth has already translated into some major points of pride for the Barrie Rugby Club. Being able to say that they are currently the fastest growing club in the country and the second largest club in Ontario last year is a testament to fact that this great game sells itself when things are done the right way. This investment in our Juniors has also created an environment where our athletes are able to flourish. The 2019 season has seen seven girls and four boys be selected for Rugby Ontario teams and we currently have four young women and one young man training with the Canadian National Under-18 teams.

With yet another move up their sleeve, the Barrie Rugby Club is looking to continue to strive for excellence by partnering with the Georgian Bay Titans to bring on Simcoe County’s first every Rugby Development Officer. This move represents a massive step for the area that will provide an on-the-ground resource for all coaches, administrators, clubs, and athletes. Brandon Kirkwood has been appointed to this position after five years working as a coach with the men’s program and as the Barrie RFC Director of Player Development. Brandon is uniquely equipped for this position with experience coaching rugby at the Collegiate level, a current head coach at the University of Toronto, and Varsity Team trainer at Georgian College, as well as the founder of the Northern Performance Rugby Academy, he has the experience and knowledge to help ensure athletes are being properly developed throughout all level and ages. After spending the last three years as the head coach of the Barrie men’s program, Brandon feels that focusing his efforts to raise

the participation and standards of junior rugby all over Simcoe County, as well as ensuring that athletes, coaches, and volunteers have the most up-to-date information and resources, is how he can best continue to grow the game of rugby.

The Rugby Development officer will attract and retain players and coaches through the delivery and implementation of rugby programs, resources, and networking within primary, secondary schools, and clubs across the region. They will manage integrated relationships with schools, clubs, and provincial teams to promote seamless transition of participation. The RDO will look to initiate, facilitate, and assist with the creation of new rugby clubs within Simcoe County. All coaches within Simcoe County will be able to contact and engage their services free of charge through the Northern Performance Rugby Skills Academy (Website coming soon). For now, if you are interested in chatting with Brandon and how he could support your team, you can contact him through the www.totalsportsalliance.com

Barrie Rugby Club. There is a lot to be excited about moving forward with the Barrie Rugby Club. GEORGIA By Chris White, Photo Credits Justin Sweet and OCAA

A Great Year to be a Grizzly! The Georgian Grizzlies have had a wealth of success during the 2019-20 season. Student-athletes from all over Georgian College have participated in a variety of events during the year. Georgian’s 13 varsity sport programs featured all-stars, medals and tons more. In the fall, the Grizzlies men’s rugby team earned an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) silver medal. The team went a perfect 6-0 in the regular season, winning their fifth straight OCAA west division title scoring 285 points for and only 92 allowed. The silver medal was their fifth straight. Ryan Connolly was named the OCAA west division scoring champion for the second straight season. The Barrie native

and third year scrum-half scored 58 points on four tries and 19 converts in six games. A total of five Grizzlies men’s rugby players were named OCAA west division all-stars with Tennyson Brown (Alliston), Donovan Jacko (Brampton), Duncan Montague (Barrie), Kurtis Nakashima (Lucan) and Zach Patfield (Minesing) each receiving the honour. On the links, Georgian’s women’s golf team of Rachael Rier (Hanover) and Kristen Butterfield (Brantford) earned a bronze medal at the OCAA Championships and went on to finish an impressive fourth place at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships. The sister duo from Bracebridge ran the table going a perfect 5-0 at the regionals hosted at Georgian College to qualify for the provincial championships. They were both named OCAA all-stars. The Grizzlies men’s volleyball team had another successful season finishing with a 15-3 regular season record to finish 2nd in the OCAA east division standings. The team then went on to win a crossover playoff game and qualify for the provincial championship. Georgian went on to win their first provincial medal in team history by earning a bronze with a win over the Fanshawe Falcons. Kaelan Kloetstra (London) earned the OCAA east division rookie of the year while teammate Mike Fors (Uxbridge) earned a second team all-star. On the basketball court, Georgian’s men’s team earned their

second straight trip to the provincials and veteran Tyler Vanessen (Whitby) was named an OCAA east division first team all-star for the second year in row. Georgian also had success in a variety of campus recreation events. The extramural men’s hockey team won two tournaments during the year in Orillia and Barrie, while the women’s hockey team won one of their own in Brantford. The men’s indoor cricket team also won the Georgian Classic back in November. All around it’s been a great year to be a Grizzly! For more information visit...

Technology vs. Craftsmanship By Ryan Robinson, Photo credit Ryan Robinson I once had a student quit his studies after he found out that the career he was seeking in Pedorthics wasn’t completely “digital”. He was aghast when, as part of his term in “fabrication”, I was teaching him how to use an oven and vacuum press to heat and form orthopaedic materials over a patient’s cast to create a unique device for them. His response: “don’t we have computers that can do this?”...then he promptly dropped his lab coat and stormed off. I’ll never forget good ol’ whatshisname. The answer to his question is, indeed, “yes”. From casting to manufacture, the process of creating a custom foot orthosis (“orthotic”) can be completely automated. The use of scanning

the orthotics industry. But here’s the better question: “Does this new technology mean that the devices are superior?” Here’s the truthful answer: “No”. Now, before you go calling me a dinosaur that simply can’t adapt and wants to go back to the good old days before electricity, let me give you some background. I have, in fact, been around the world researching emerging orthotic technology. I have even lectured across Canada, the US, and Europe on the topic. I have used various 3D scanners (and still do), I have used various CAD programs for the design of the orthoses, and I have used CNC manufacture and tried 3D printing. Digital technology is great for repeatability and consistency. If you lose your device, it is easy to remake a new one using your saved file. However, through my experience, I have learned that it is still: “Garbage in, Garbage out.” I find that far too often we rely on technology to do our jobs for us. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. The use of technology is a “tool” like any other. It will not make up for a lack of knowledge, casting skill, and production knowledge. Simply put, no amount of technology will correct for a bad cast/scan and certainly not for a bad assessment. If you don’t know what you’re doing, by extension, you don’t know what is required of the custom device in order to realize the ultimate goal. It doesn’t matter how fancy the image on the screen looks.

technology to render a 3D image of the foot has been around for some time. CAD/CAM (Computer Assisted Design and Manufacture) programs have also long been used along with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines to create devices. And, over the last few years, 3D printing has been utilized in

The manufacture of custom foot orthoses, custom shoes, and custom braces is a craft like any other, and, like any craft, some products are simply better than others. Some things to look for in a well-crafted device: 1. Does it fit? Is there a gap between your foot and the device, which might indicate that the device was “best matched” using a pre-made library of devices, rather than from a true cast of your foot. 2. Do the right and left devices look exactly the same? This is called “mirroring” where they really only use the info from one foot and “mirror” that info to make the same device for the other side (saves time and money). Your feet aren’t the same, so why would the devices be made the same? While technology will continue to change many professions in many positive ways, it is my sincere hope and belief that we will continue to value true craftsmanship. We may make the decision to save some money and buy a bedroom set from IKEA, rather than something made from real wood and that’s okay. However, when we are talking about our health and our bodies, I hope we never sacrifice and resolve to demand the best.

Now I’m going to turn the crank to start up my jalopy’s engine and head into town for some sarsaparilla at the Five and Dime. For further information, please email me at ryan.robinson@ walkingmobilityclinics.com.
