Jewelry insurance should be the first step in protecting your jewelry. For engaged couples (as well as married couples), both parties should be named on the policy. Thinking your jewelry is covered under your homeowner’s (or renter’s) policy may be a mistake. Homeowner policies have per-item limits that are below the value of the average engagement ring. Homeowner’s insurance does not cover the most common perils involving jewelry—a damaged stone, loss of a stone, or mysterious disappearance. A stand alone jewelry policy ensures that jewelry is adequately covered. Not all insurance agents are knowledgeable about jewelry insurance. Choose an agent who can discuss with you proper coverage for your jewelry. Ask questions about anything you don’t understand. An appraisal for insurance requires not only a valuation but a detailed description of the jewelry. The agent may not require a detailed description when writing the policy but, in the event of a claim, the insurer will ask you for information that may be difficult to recover after a loss. When applying for insurance, present all relevant documents, such as the appraisal, sales receipt, and lab report. If you received an appraisal with the jewelry purchase, it’s prudent to have the jewelry appraised by a qualified gemologist appraiser who is independent of the seller, to verify that the quality is as the seller stated. Jewelry appraising is unregulated—literally anyone can call himself or herself an appraiser. Choose an appraiser who is a trained and experienced gemologist. The best credentials for a jewelry appraiser are Graduate Gemologist (GG) or FGA+ and Certified Insurance Appraiser (CIATM). Look for these letters after the appraiser’s name. They signify an appraiser who has a thorough training in gemology and specialized training in appraising jewelry for insurance. An inflated appraisal valuation (that is, a valuation substantially higher than the price of the jewelry) does not benefit you. It only means that your insurance premiums will be higher. An appraisal for insurance should include one or more photos of the jewelry, as a photo can often show details that would be difficult to describe in words.
