THAI MASSAGE The best of yoga and massage combined by Annalisa Derryberry, LMT

Annalisa Derryberry Licensed Massage Therapist

...Every BODY needs a different massage Therapeutic Massage Thai Massage

904-274-1584 located near San Jose & 295 at 2980 Hartley Road #1 Jacksonville www.derryberrymassage.com MA43061 MM30953

Maybe you've seen an ad for it, or you've heard Oprah or Dr. Oz mention it on their shows. But what is Thai Massage anyway, and why would you want to try it?

What is it?

During a Thai massage, you will be moved in a series of totally customized stretches which help the body relax deeply. At the same time, you will be massaged by the therapist's hands, arms, elbows, knees, and feet to allow aches, pains, and tension to melt and disappear. Sometimes referred to as “lazy man's yoga”, it is done on a comfortable mat surrounded by pillows. You stay completely clothed the whole time, and no oil or lotion is used.

Who is it for?

Thai massage is so highly adaptable that it can be beneficial for almost everyone. If your joints feel stiffer than you’d like, pillows and bolsters can help to prop and support, allowing you to not go beyond what your body needs. On the other hand, if you’re already very flexible, it can help you go deeper into your stretches, and find new areas to open. It is even helpful for relieving aches and pains during pregnancy, and can always be adjusted to meet the necessary comfort and safety levels. How can it help? Here are some of the things you can look forward to: • A deep sense of relaxation—Thai massage counteracts life's daily stresses, which can lead to better sleep, calmer interactions, and more peace and sanity in general • Pain relief—the combination of gentle stretches and massage allows aches and pains to disappear • More energy—the improved circulation increases vitality and can promote faster healing • Increased flexibility and range of motion—it will be easier and safer to work and play In summary, Thai massage is a wonderful addition to your wellness routine. It's nothing you can't handle, and you'll wonder why you've never tried it before! For more information, or to schedule an appointment, visit www.derryberrymassage.com or call 904-274-1584.

Choosing the Right Babysitter As a parent, there usually comes an occasion where you have to leave your child with a babysitter. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you have parents or in-laws in town, making this much easier. But for those who have to find qualified babysitters outside of family, the task can be very daunting. After all, you don’t want to leave your most cherished treasure with just anyone! When I recently surveyed some friends on what qualities they look for in a babysitter, I got a lot of good answers: someone who is good with kids, honest, a good role model, respectful, friendly, etc. All of these answers are great qualities but I think the biggest question you have to ask yourself when choosing a babysitter is, “Is this person qualified to keep my child SAFE?” When it’s all said and done, it won’t matter as much if your babysitter does all the dishes, is the friendliest person you’ve ever met, or is a youth who makes straight A’s in school. When you come home, you want your child to be safe, cared for and alive. I have heard some babysitter “horror” stories. Some of them are on the milder side: letting the kids stay up past their bedtime, getting locked out of the house with the kids, setting of the security system on accident and scaring the parents with the call from the security company. Those are things to avoid, for sure, but I have also heard some TRUE horror stories. My husband and I own a local safety company and so safety is always in the forefront of our minds, and especially as it

6

pertains to our two young children. We teach Babysitting Safety certification courses for youth because we know how important they are for youth who need to learn the important aspects of babysitting. Our advice to all parents who are seeking a good babysitter is to keep safety on the top of the list. Look for a babysitter who is CERTIFIED. Does your babysitter have a current certification in Community CPR and Basic First Aid? If he/she is a younger babysitter, has he/she gone through a Babysitting Safety certification course? Every parent needs a night out from time to time . . . give yourself a break, but be diligent in hiring the right babysitter to watch your kids! Safety First CPR & Safety Training is owned by husband-wife team, Tukz & Carrie Taaca. They offer various safety courses such as Community CPR/ AED, Basic First Aid, Child & Babysitting Safety, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Youth Safety, Swimming Lessons and more. You can find out more about their classes or register for one online at www. SafetyFirstJax.com. They can also be hired to teach private courses for groups and organizations.

Simple Savings Solutions for Getting Top Dollar for Your Home by Kristy Thurber, REALTOR, Coldwell Banker Vanguard Realty & Brandis Rodriguez with Corbella Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling Selling a home is an exciting yet emotional time in a person’s life. As a local Coldwell Banker Vanguard REALTOR working with all types of buyers, I see and understand what sells. Did you know that if your home is over 5 years old, buyers may consider it to be “old”? According to an article written by Samuel Weigley for 24/7 Wall St., 40% of buyers are willing to pay more for a newer home. Those willing to pay more for a newer home are willing to pay an extra $5,020.00 in the purchase price. “With years of real estate experience I see the power the Seller gains when they take the time to update their home. Utilize your REALTOR’s experience and knowledge. It’s one of the BEST things you can do!”

8

It can be a lot of work and money to keep up with the growing trends in today’s market, but luckily, there are several quick and cost efficient fixes a person can do to get top dollar for their home. Kitchens are the first place to start as they tend to be the heart of every home. Countertops remain one of the top areas of interest for buyers. Granite and other solid surfaces are the most popular and a good investment when getting your home ready to put on the market. Homeowners will likely recover the cost of replacement, if not more when they sell their home with countertop upgrades. On average, Samuel Weigley estimates that 55% of home buyers are willing to pay $1,620.00 more for a home with granite countertops. Updated and clean cabinetry is another must have on a buyers’ list. Many of today’s trends focus on color ranging from creamy whites to dark espresso finishes versus cabinetry type. Before you begin your remodel, take the time to place yourself in buyer’s perspective as you walk through your house, and

use that as your guide. What are the things YOU would expect if YOU were looking to purchase this house? What would YOU change? Changing your frame of reference will help you be successful in getting your house ready to market, will attract more buyers, and will shorten the time it takes for your house to sell. As previously mentioned, buyers consider the kitchen one of the most important selling points in the house. As local owners of Corbella Kitchen and Bathroom we pride ourselves on creatively designing spaces and offer simple and cost effective solutions to get the most return on your investment. Laminate countertops are a thing of the past and with new Quartz or Granite countertops your kitchen will look like new again! Granite can often end up costing more than quartz since it is a natural rock. Quartz is fast becoming the most popular kitchen countertop material because it’s resistant to stains, heat, scratches & abrasion. You can also purchase quartz in a ½ slab helping reduce the expense. We have many samples of granite & quartz in our showroom to help you weigh the options and see which coordinates best with your cabinets finish. Another kitchen solution is cabinet refinishing instead of replacing. It’s an affordable way to get a new look for your existing cabinets without the time consuming, messy and costly method of re-stripping or replacing. Change the color, not the cabinet! Cabinet refinishing process takes 7-10 days and it’s 40% the cost of new cabinets. “Experience is one of our strong points in designing home spaces. We have been in the remodeling industry since 1996 and bring years of experience to your project.” Getting top dollar for your house is the ultimate goal.

MEET DR. FAULL by Debbie Gaylord

Dr. Rosann Faull’s great-grandmother had significant hearing loss and wore hearing aids. This was during the 60’s and 70’s and her experience with old technology was the catalyst for Dr. Faull to study Audiology in college. She wanted to help people hear better and maintain a high quality of life. Dr. Faull started her career by working with Ear, Nose and Throat physicians and was Director of Audiology at University of Missouri Medical School Hospital. She specialized in diagnostic evaluation of hearing loss, balance evaluation and hearing aid evaluations for children and adults, and provided audiology training to medical residents. In 1983 she began her private practice in Melbourne, Florida. While there, in addition to her regular hearing-loss patients, she established newborn and infant hearing screening programs at two hospitals. In 2009 she and her husband Art Faull moved to the First Coast and started a private practice in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville. “For me, the most rewarding part of audiology is helping people get the most from their hearing with advanced hearing technologies. I provide diagnostic hearing evaluations, hearing aid evaluations, prescribing and fitting hearing aids, and tinnitus evaluations and tinnitus relief. I work with many manufactures to assure the best solution for my patient’s hearing health.” Dr. Leslie Newmeyer recenly joined the practice. Both Dr. Faull and Dr. Newmeyer are Doctors of Audiology with 35 + years of experience. Dr. Faull and Dr. Newmeyer strive to help patients improve their hearing so they remain engaged in life.

According to Dr. Faull, “Recent research has proven that improving your hearing through advanced hearing instruments preserves and decreases cognitive decline. Unfortunately, the most common hearing loss in adults – sensori-neural or nerve hearing loss cannot be corrected with surgery or medicine, only appropriately prescribed and fitted hearing instruments can help”. When Dr. Faull is not at her Mandarin office helping patients, she is enjoys traveling. She and her husband art are avid bicyclists and their vacations often are weeks-long excursions on bicycle trails nationwide. In recent years they rode from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh PA and the Virginia Creeper Trail. They have also traveled to Machu Picchu, Peru and spent 3 years living on their sailboat from 1999 -2001. To learn more about Dr. Faull and how she can help you hear better visit her website www.drfaull.com
