The bathtub BREAK-UP By Brandis Rodriguez of Corbella Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling

M

any people have experienced the same disappointment when dealing with old bathrooms where a giant tub takes up too much space but is seldom used. Design trends show that demand has increased for walk-in showers in recent years. The younger generation simply prefer showers and older homeowners don't want a tub to step into or out of. MOVE OVER, JACUZZIS! The trend for home renovators is the tub-to-shower conversion. Today's homeowners are increasingly choosing luxury walk-in showers for both style and convenience. The American Institute of Architects says that the tub-less bathroom is growing in popularity. Its annual Home Design Trends Survey found that more than 60% of homeowners preferred a stall shower without a tub. Conventional wisdom is changing as more homeowners want to live in their current home as they get older. Remodeling from a tub to a shower allows homeowners to use the existing space to create a design that fits their life. BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO YOUR BATHROOM! Tub-to-shower conversions can be designed door-less and free of shower tracks, allowing wheel chair access and prevent trips and falls getting into the shower. Today’s remodeled shower can be truly luxurious, with options including his and her showerheads, body sprays, and or steam generators. They can open up your bathroom, creating a larger feel that is also easier to clean. Opening up the space also may allow more room for a larger vanity or other features that increase the beauty and practical use of the bathroom. One solution is to convert your old, worn out bathtub into a beautiful new shower, complete with new fixtures, walls and bases. Corbella Kitchen & Bath bathroom in Mandarin takes pride in the creating design ideas that fit your current needs by transforming old fixtures into stunning new bathrooms. A dream shower can often become a reality as Corbella’s design team has the ability to fit it inside the footprint of the outdated tub. For ideas about how Corbella can help you transform your old bathroom into deluxe sanctuary visit www.corbellakitchens.com Brandis Rodriguez

The Brain & Your Hearing

opefully the warmer weather will soon be behind us and we can venture outside and enjoy cooler temperatures. Nothing makes us feel young again like a break in the heat. Actually the population of the United States is much older than we realize. The Census Bureau states that there are 77 million baby boomers in the U.S. Baby boomers, those of us born between 1946 and 1964, are the youngest ‘old’ people out there!! Baby boomers play hard, eat right, exercise, learn new skills, take college courses, and do anything and everything to stay young. This includes activities to keep our brains young. There are great on-line cognitive stimulating games and courses such as ‘Lumosity’. Many fields of research are studying the effects of aging on memory and cognition. This research includes the auditory system; the ear and the auditory center in our brain. What happens in our ears when we listen to a conversation is actually a very small part of the hearing process. The real heavy lifting is done in our brain. The brain takes all the sounds coming into our ears and makes sense of it all. It uses the information from our two ears to figure out where sounds is coming from, to focus our attention on conversations around us, and helps filter out extra unwanted noises. To insure that your brain is receiving the information that it needs to recognize voices, understand conversations and alert you to the world around you, have your hearing evaluated by a hearing health care professional with a college education – a Doctor of Audiology. This test will determine any deficits in your

hearing and how that affects your understanding. If your ears need assistance, there are great new technologies to help you. Our office in Mandarin has two Doctors of Audiology - Dr. Rosann Faull and Dr. Leslie Newmeyer. Between them, they have over 50 years of experience diagnosing and treating hearing loss. We would love to meet you and explore how this new technology may assist you. www. drfaull.com fun & friendly local resource guides with HEART! Parent & Teachers SUBMITTED by Teri Wesselman, Owner of Brain Balance

W

orking together with your child’s teacher is one of the best ways to ensure your child is getting the most effective school support for his/her learning challenges. Make the most of parent teacher conferences with these tips to make parent-teacher communication easier and more efficient. Communicate Early Ignoring your child’s problems is not helpful. If the teacher has not initiated contact, feel free to do so yourself. Many teachers will send home a handout noting how and when it’s best to communicate with them. Alternately, you can contact the school office. Be in Touch Regularly Regular communication with the teacher is important. There are several ways to do this: Face-to-face meeting: Go prepared with a list of specific concerns you want to discuss. Phone calls: Find out the most convenient time to phone the teacher. For example, don’t try to call to speak during class hours. Written notes or emails: Keep these short and to the point. If necessary, request a meeting to discuss your concerns further.

10

Converse Respectfully Staging a confrontation with your child’s teacher will achieve nothing except to raise negative emotions. Instead,

treat the teacher with respect and allow your child to witness this behavior. If you belittle a teacher in the presence of your child, your example will more than likely make the task of teaching even more difficult! Build a good relationship with your child’s teacher. Even if you’ve got bad memories of your childhood teachers or have had problems communicating with schools before now, leave all that baggage behind and concentrate on the future. Collaborate with the Teacher According to Kristen L. Hodnett in her article, Why It’s Important to Partner With Your Child’s Teacher, reaching out to the teacher will help your child feel more positive about learning and help the teacher understand your child better. Collaboration and brainstorming ideas with the teacher is a more successful approach than lecturing the educator on how you think your child should be taught. Remember that although you know your child well, the teacher has had formal training in how to get concepts across to a class. Work together on the best ways to connect with your child, both at school and at home. Keeping the parent-teacher communication ongoing and positive is key when you’re getting help for a student with special needs. Remember that you’re all working toward the same goal: to empower your child with knowledge in the best way possible. To schedule an assessment for your child, or to learn more about how the Brain Balance Program can help your child reach their full potential, contact us at 904-800-7278.

How The Weather Takes a Toll on Your Roof System

& WHAT YOU CAN DO! by Ben Lavarias Turnkey Construction and Maintenance, Inc.

D

id you know that our summer days of high temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms have an adverse effect on your home’s structure and how the mechanical systems work? One thing most people don't know is that areas of your home work as a system. Consider your roof system. The first thing that comes to mind are shingles and some other roof top items. Although the roof is a major component of your home, the roof system includes the attic, insulation and the eaves for ventilation. Each one has an effect on the other and when properly balanced it can not only prolong the life of your roof, but also save money on your electric bill. The way your roof and attic work with each other is that when wind blows into the wall of your home, some of it is directed into the soffit or eaves of your home. The air penetrates into the attic then blows the hot air and moisture up into the attic and through venting towards the top of your roof. The vents are typically off ridge vents or ridge vents. These areas allow the heat and moisture to escape keeping

your attic cool. When the venting with the soffits and the roof venting aren't balanced it can cause your attic to overheat and not only increase the heat in your home but also overheat the shingles that are protecting your roof, causing them to prematurely fail. Making sure that your roof system is properly balanced can save you money from both heating and cooling and not having to replace a roof too soon. Most licensed roofing contractors can help you determine if your home is properly balanced for ventilation. An upgrade in venting is also an option. Solar vents to mechanical vents to additional vents can all make a world of difference. Making sure your home operates at peak efficiency will insure you get the best use of the roof over your head!
