My husband Darren Rosenbaum and I work together as a team to produce this magazine for the community each month. Even though he is a teacher and is often busy with grading and lesson planning, he is a great sounding board for ideas and often writes articles, creates our calendar and does all final editing. For this I am very grateful.

Dear Readers, With four high schools in our distribution area and thousands of young people attending proms locally in April & May, we decided our cover would focus on the tradition of the American Prom with a classic local beauty, Katie W. as our model. The prom is possibly as American as apple pie and baseball. It began as a tradition for American teens during the 1950s and has stayed a constant in an ever-changing world. Each spring young people aacross the nation attend the Senior Prom. It is an opportunity to get all gussied up, dance together one last time, at one last great bash before graduation and say farewell to the carefree teen years. I hope you enjoy the essay about Prom Night by young writer, Hannah D. You will no doubt be transported back to revel in your memories (both good and bad) about your own prom night. Please remember to tell any business you find in this magazine that St. Johns Magazine sent you.

Sincerely, Debbie Gaylord - Publisher Rosenbaum904-687-8538 - Editor St. Johns Darren Magazine

2015 Prom Season by Hannah Dutrieux, Creekside High School Photo by St. Johns Mag Model, Katie Williams Hair & makeup, Irina, Indulge Salon, Shoppe & Spa

Prom Night: That One Special Night by Hannah Dutrieux Senior prom, oh how the time has flown by. When it comes to being a senior, it may be my last year of high school, but it sure is the busiest! From school work, to family and friends, and then when springtime rolls around, lacrosse season begins. This is my favorite season of the year because I get to be a part of a team doing something that I love. This year my teammates voted me as one of the captains for our team. I couldn’t be more grateful for

that, because freshman year I never would have seen myself in this position. Since lacrosse season is also the same season as prom, my teammates and I will be the ones in the pretty dresses and hilarious tan lines. Senior prom is one of those “big milestones” of your high school career. It’s the one big event right before you graduate when you and all your friends can go to have a great time. When I was an underclassman I remember around prom time I would always go online and look at the pictures everyone was posting of their pretty dresses and I would pick my favorite one. Prom dress shopping is one of my favorite parts of prom. I’ve always been a fan of dark colors, so this year I got a simple black dress with rhinestones on the top and it has straps. Pre-prom is just about as fun as the actual prom, with getting your hair and makeup done, putting on your dress, and then going out to dinner that night. I almost forgot one of the funniest parts...taking pictures before. I absolutely love taking pictures, and I’ll always be the one saying “one more picture”. Another fun part about prom is the dancing. Speaking for one of many, I’m definitely not the best dancer, but by no means does that suffice as a reason for not wanting to go. Just have as much fun as you can, dancing as weird as you want because it’s senior year and you only get one senior prom, and don’t even think twice about what anyone else thinks! When prom finally comes to a close it will be time for graduation, the final “milestone” of your high school life. The time when everyone who grew up together, finally gets to say “I did it!” After graduating from Creekside High School’s Class of 2015 I will be attending Florida State University to major in Business and Marketing. Although I am excited to see what the future holds for me, the great high school memories and senior prom will always be something to remember. The author, Hannah Dutrieux

The Eyes Have It Instant Eye Lift

by Sarina Durden

Are Your Eyes Showing The Tell Tale Signs Of The Spring Time Change? Here Are A Few Quick Makeup Tricks To Give Your Tired Eyes An Instant Lift~No Surgery Required!

1 SKIP THE EYELINER UNDER THE EYE:

Instead, opt for lining the top of the lash line only. This focuses the eye to the top of the eyes instead of the lower lash line where the dreaded dark circles live. If you feel you must have something underneath try a lighter liner on the bottom like a soft taupe and a darker one on top.

2

APPLY A CHAMPAGNE OR FLESH COLORED EYELINER ON THE INNER RIM OF THE EYE & ON THE LIDS This is one of my favorites! It’s amazing what an instant difference it makes. These colors will camouflage the red/purplish colors that appear on the waterline when we are tired, sick or suffering from allergies and make the eyes look brighter. They are also more natural looking than a white pencil. Opt for a NON-WATERPROOF for a safer choice on the waterline.

Then with small strokes move inward toward the center. Gently brush in the direction of the hair to soften (usually up and outward) Don’t go too dark in the front of the brow~you don’t want to look angry!

5

ADD A POP OF COLOR TO YOUR LIPS Applying a brighter color lip will draw attention to your mouth and take the focus off your eyes. A brighter color also makes the lips look fuller and more youthful. If you feel a bit timid with a bright lipstick color, try a new lipgloss in a shade or two brighter than you would normally choose. They are usually more sheer and therefore the color won’t be as bold looking.

3

HIGHLIGHT THE TOP OF YOUR BROWS Apply a concealer, highlighter or matte eyeshadow a shade lighter than skin tone just above the top of the brow. Second, softly blend the top edge into the skin. Applying the same color just under the brow and at the bone by the arch gives a finished look.

4 FILL IN YOUR BROWS

If they eyes are windows to the soul, the brows are the frame. A defined brow draws the eye upward. There are so many options, but I prefer a tinted brow wax or a clear wax with a tinted powder. They sculpt and fill in. Start at the center of the brow and move outward.

Do you love the flavors of a backyard barbecue, but don’t have the time

or patience for that rich tender goodness that only comes from 14 hours in a smoker? Then I highly recommend you take a short scenic drive down CR 210 to Rt. 13 for some amazing barbecue from Woodpeckers. After several visits, I’ve managed to try most of their specialties and none have disappointed! The ribs and chicken were tender and juicy and practically falling off the bone. A Message from The Vet ~ Dr. Veling, DVM

Getting Into Veterinary School As a practicing veterinarian I get to meet many sons and daughters (and their parents) who are interested in being a veterinarian, some permanently, some temporarily. Most will turn out to only temporarily think they are going to join the profession. I have lots of conversations with doting parents who would like to see their children become veterinarians because they “love animals.” Thankfully, most turn away. I say thankfully because most will appropriately find another career. So, what is involved in becoming a veterinarian? First, it takes brains. If your child is not in the top part of his or her high school class, don’t encourage him or her. Each high school is different. In an average high school a student needs to be in the top 10 percent. In a college preparatory school he or she needs to be in the top 15%. He or she should also be a people person if intending to go into private practice. If he or she can barely get their eyes off the floor in the presence of an adult, please do not encourage private practice as a goal. Research is where they belong if they are brainiacs and want to be veterinarians. How much of a commitment is veterinary medical schooling? Big. Most have already earned a Bachelors degree. A lucky few get in after three years of an undergraduate program. Then comes the grind – veterinary school. It is tough but very stimulating. The first three years at most schools are the foundation of knowledge. Freshman year is about learning normal. Sophomore and Junior years is about learning the abnormal. The last year is the beginning of performing what you learned – clinical rotation. There is a great deal of specialization now. The student can choose early on to learn more about pets, concentrate on horses, stick with farm animals or do it all. In my education this was not done. We learned it all. However, there has been an explosion of knowledge since then. Specialization is good. It makes for better doctors. The bad part is that the student who learns all about farm animals can change careers any time and become a small animal practitioner. It is obvious that the public could suffer harm this way. I was involved as a member of the admissions committee for the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine six years ago. It was an honor and a pleasure to serve my profession and the future veterinarians we interviewed and about whom we made decisions. I was very definitely impressed by many of the applicants. There were many who had done research already. Some already had advanced degrees such as a Masters degree. There were some we decided were not fit for the profession. That letter would be devastating. If they really want it they will try again. Maybe they will grow up and learn more in the mean time. Persistence can be a virtue. It took me twice to gain entrance.
