The Starlight Project has been chosen as the featured organization for the Palencia Street Festival coming March 29th. They are currently working on a huge project for a local school, The Therapeutic Learning Center. Look for photos in our next issue. If you would like more information about the Starlight Project or would like to submit an application for your child, please visit their website at http://starlight-foundation.com/wp/.
There is an entire process that occurs before the team even begins working
on a dream room. First comes a review of applicants, switching it up so there are equal numbers of boys and girls with different ages and types of special needs. Once they have chosen a child, Cherie meets with the child’s teachers, therapists and parents and creates a list of the top things that the child loves, such as swimming or art or baseball. They combine this with those areas that pose a challenge, such as needing a changing table for an older child or custom designed cubes with pictures for a non-verbal child. They come up with a final list of the top 10 things they want to address in the room. Next the team meets to brainstorm how they can translate this therapeutically within the bedroom to make it not just an imaginative room but one with a purpose that serves the child and his family. They install the room in a 2-3 day period and send the family on a dream weekend while they do it, another aspect of the Starlight Project that reflects their deep understanding of the stresses of raising a child with special needs. The Starlight Project completes a few rooms each year and currently has a 3 year waiting list. According to Cherie Sussman, keeping it small allows the team to be part of the development of each room. It also creates a non-profit organization with heart.

Unique Therapies for Children with Special Needs by Stephanie Vavilala November 14, 2014 is a date that changed the direction of my life forever. This was the date I received the autism diagnosis for my 2-yearold daughter. Due to mother’s intuition, I knew for some time this day would come despite others (like her primary care physician, speech therapist, etc.) telling me I was “overanalyzing” her due to my profession as a mental health counselor. As I dove in head first, I spent the entire day researching what to do and as equally important, what NOT to do. As a mother I wanted to do everything humanly possible for my daughter to provide her with the best chance for success. Doing the research, I quickly became overwhelmed as I found out there are a myriad of options available in many different areas: Mental Health such as play therapy, parent-child interactional therapy, animal–assisted therapy (canine and equine), and social skills training; Behavioral such as applied behavioral analysis (ABA) and Floortime; Medical such as gluten and casein free diets, pharmaceutical medications, and vitamins; Alternative and sometimes controversial such as hypobaric chamber and chelation; and Applied such as speech, occupational, and physical therapy. The unique treatments I will discuss in more detail are play therapy, animal-assisted therapy, and combination therapy. I believe these treatments are very effective as I’ve seen the power of them from the standpoint of being a professional who has provided them as well as a mother who’s daughter has received them. Play therapy utilizes a child’s natural language (play) through their words (toys). It helps children learn more adaptive behaviors when there are emotional or social skills deficits. It is natural and enjoyable! Animalassisted therapy uses a dog or horse as a co-therapist. Children are naturally drawn to animals and are typically more relaxed and comfortable around them. Lastly, a combination therapy is using play therapy with animal-assisted therapy or applied behavioral analysis with play therapy to incorporate the best of two approaches into one. These approaches can also be used with other special needs and/or behavioral and emotional problems. Choosing a treatment path may feel overwhelming. Treatment for each child is as unique as the disorder itself. One of the logos for autism is a puzzle piece, due to the complexity of the disorder. I like to use this same analogy for the treatment of autism. I believe to adequately treat autism, many of the treatments above are necessary to complete the full picture. It is so difficult to find the time to travel to all the providers necessary as well as for those providers to collaborate. This was one of the most frustrating things for me as a mother as I
wanted to provide my daughter with as much treatment as possible but found it difficult to manage it all. Due to this issue, I decided to open up a holistic treatment center, Therapeutic Butterfly Effects (www.therapeuticbutterflyeffects.com), offering many of the approaches above- play therapy, animal-assisted therapy (canine and equine), applied behavioral analysis, speech, occupational, and physical therapy- under one roof so that families are able to get effective treatment with multiple approaches with collaborating providers. As a mental health counselor, I can combine treatment methods to provide play therapy in combination with applied behavioral analysis as well as play therapy in combination with animal assisted therapy. Additional providers in my office provide speech, occupational, and physical therapy in collaboration with the other providers. My goal was to provide a place where families can come to get most everything they need while

Top 10 Ways to Lead a Happy Life
Increase Your
Happiness
Have you ever thought about the things that make you feel happy in life? Make 2015 your year to live the happy life with these easy tips:
Be Hopeful:
Believing that something good is going to happen is an attitude that leaves you feeling light and eager
for the good things in life that are coming your way.
Cultivate Friendship: Having someone to talk to about triumphs and struggles helps keep you emotionally balanced in ways beyond the moment.
Blessings:
Being aware of the big and little things and feeling grateful by keeping a journal is a sure way to realize that
while there may still be things you want – what you have is pretty good.
Prayer:
Sometimes when life challenges us, the best way to find your inner compass is to ask for guidance from a higher
power. Usually the answer presents itself.
Set Goals: Setting goals and reaching them gives you a feeling of accomplishment and this feels really good. It can be a small daily goal like organizing the pantry or a big goal like starting a business. Goals give life purpose and meaning and keep you going in the right direction.
Have Fun:
When you are having a day where you feel like life is against you, stop doing what you are doing and find
something that brings you joy instead. Go shopping, paint a picture, take some photographs of a beautiful sunset. After a few minutes of doing something you love your attitude shifts into positive mode creating a ripple effect in all areas of your life.
Look Forward: A vacation to the Bahamas, a night at home with the family; dinner out with your husband. Whatever it is - having something to look forward to is a great feeling.
Exercise: It doesn’t have to be hardcore. Take a walk, ride your bike, do yoga in your living room. A little exercise increases your happiness quotient on a chemical level.
Practice Non-attachment: Sometimes we are so fixated on the outcome it brings us down. Letting go of control allows little miracles to happen in your life.
Forgive: Release anger as soon as possible and forgive. It only hurts you to hold on. I am always amazed when my children forgive so easily and wish I could do the same.
Acts of Kindness: Little acts of anonymous kindness for others make them feel good and in the process it makes you feel good too. It could be kinds words, a smile, or something grander. Try it at least once each day and see the magic.
Allow Yourself to have a Down Day:
We can’t be happy every minute. Allow yourself to have
those days when you are sad or angry. On those days pamper yourself. Have a cup of tea with a friend or take a long hot bath with some essential oils. Just do not wallow too long or review negative thoughts repetitively. As my mother always told me, tomorrow is another day.

15 Fitness Tips for Fat Loss
by Isaiah White, Owner & Personal Trainer at Every Body Fitness
Photograph by Stacy Lynne Photography 1.
Chew gum while preparing meals. It will keep you from sampling, which adds calories.
2.
Have dressings & sauces on the side instead of pouring it all over your food. It will save calories while still allowing you to flavor your food.
3.
Track your food intake. If you are losing or gaining weight, you will be able to see what you’ve eaten so that you can either make changes or keep doing the same thing. And, you’re less likely to eat 12 cookies if you know you have to write it down!
4.
Switch to diet or sugar free sodas & energy drinks. Yes, those things aren’t good for you, but if you drink them, you’re going to continue to drink them. Switching to the sugar free versions saves a ton of calories on your total daily caloric intake.
5.
Eat meal replacements. Whether a protein shake, bar, or your own homemade pre-made snack, eating a meal replacement as a snack between meals will help you control your calorie intake.
6.
Eat frequently throughout the day. Your metabolism is like a fire, if you’re adding small logs to it regularly, it will continue to burn hot! Stop eating and it slows down.
7.
Do something active every day. It doesn’t have to be a workout, run or a class, but do something that gets you up and moving, like walking the dog, mowing the lawn, taking a bike ride, or going for a swim.
8.
Drink water. It sounds simple, but most of us are chronically dehydrated. Staying hydrated can help ensure proper digestion, increase energy, & allow for fat loss.
9.
Take a daily multi-vitamin. We don’t have the time to prepare & eat the variety of foods every day that we would need to meet our vitamin, mineral & nutrient requirements. You want your body to have everything it needs if you are trying to lose weight, increase performance or gain muscle.
10. Include lifting weight in your workouts. If you are hoping to ride the elliptical into a perfect beach body, it isn’t going to happen. You need to maintain lean muscle tissue in order to burn more calories throughout the day. One pound of lean muscle tissue burns 50 calories per day at complete rest. 11. Vary your cardio programs. Forty-five minutes, three times per week at the same pace & resistance is only going to get your body used to doing that more efficiently, which means you will burn fewer calories each time you do it. Include intervals in your cardio programs to change it up & torch calories. 12. Work with a nationally certified fitness professional. If you are serious about losing weight or achieving your fitness goal, you need personal assistance to get there, everyone does. How many professional golfers, Olympic athletes, or people on weight loss shows don’t have certified personal trainers? None. Regardless of your fitness pursuit, you need some assistance to get where you need to go! It will be more than worth whatever you pay for it. 13. Find a workout partner. You are more likely to show up to work out or run if you have someone waiting for you. Plus it makes the time pass faster when you’re working with someone! 14. Weigh yourself weekly. If you know if you’re losing, gaining or maintaining your weight, you will know if you need to keep up the good work or make a change to your nutrition or workout programs. 15. Keep going, you can do it! If you’re trying to lose weight & keep it off, not crash dieting, it will take time, but it will be worth it when you can finally throw away those “fat jeans” for good!

Hearing Loss & Dimentia Are They Linked? by Rosann W. Faull, Au.D, CCC-A, Board Certified Doctor of Audiology
The Loss of Memory and the Fear of Dementia are not only ‘hot’ topics, but a concern we have as we age. We all know someone - family member, famous people, Ronald Reagan and Dear Abby (Abigail Van Buren), who have developed dementia. Research is on-going and watching the evening news advertizes more than one medication to ‘slow’ or ‘lessen’ the effects of dementia. There are computer games, such as ‘Lumosity Brain Games’ to exercise memory and attention. Seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing, a study by John Hopkins University and National Institute on Aging researchers suggests. Although the reason for the link between the two conditions is unknown, the investigators suggest that a common pathology may underlie both and/or the strain of decoding sounds over the years may overwhelm the brains of people with hearing loss, leaving them more vulnerable to dementia. Also hearing loss can lead to social isolation, which is a

known risk factor for dementia and cognitive disorders. The John Hopkins University study looked at research from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging (BLSA) starting in 1990 -1994. Hundreds of volunteers were closely followed with repeat examinations every one to two years. Twenty-five percent of initial 639 had some hearing loss but no dementia. By 2008, 58 of those had developed dementia. The researchers found that study participants with hearing loss at the beginning of the study were significantly more likely to develop dementia by the end. The more severe the hearing loss they had, the more likelihood of developing the memory-robbing disease. Frank Lin, M.D., John Hopkins University, explains that even after the researchers took into account other factors that are associated with risk of dementia, including diabetes, high blood pressure, age, sex and race; hearing loss and dementia were still strongly connected. He states that: “A lot of people ignore hearing loss because it’s such a slow and insidious

process as we age. Even if people feel as if they are not affected, we’re showing that it may well be a more serious problem.” Whatever the cause, the scientists report, their finding may offer a starting point for intervention – even as simple as hearing aids – that could delay or prevent dementia by improving patients’ hearing. Start your new year with a healthy resolution: Get your hearing evaluated. This medical hearing evaluation is paid by insurance, even Medicare, when it is done by a Doctor of Audiology with a medical referral. Learn if you have a hearing deficit and if so, what may help you hear better. Stay involved with your family and friends and keep your brain stimulated with clear, loud speech and sounds. Rosann W. I left him getting fluids to see other pets but Devil was never totally off my mind. Working as a solo veterinarian has its drawbacks. Experience is the best teacher but picking other people’s brains works too. I wanted to ask my non-existent associate veterinarian to look at the x-rays and give me the diagnosis. and it lies HORIZONTALLY across your belly. It protects your organs in the front and your back in the back! It especially protects you when you do strenuous work, IF you recruit it. In Pilates, we KNOW HOW. Pilates builds strength and endurance in this critical muscle.
The Internal Obliques come UP from your hips to your center front and your External Obliques come DOWN from beneath your arms and across your bottom rib, toward your center.
