Senior Living Tips Safety

By Jennifer Logue, Firstlight Home Care

Pharmacist Crystal Abernathy recalled an elderly patient who came to her hospital’s emergency department carrying dozens of prescription medication containers. “He was on 23 medications,” Abernathy told attendees at a recent Memorial Hospital forum on medication mistakes. “But when I looked at all the bottles, I found that five of them were for the exact same medication, but in different dosages.” Had the patient been taking all five, not realizing they were the same medication? Or had perhaps different doctors unknowingly prescribed the same medication? Those are just a couple of the ways medication mix-ups may occur. It’s estimated that 1.5 million medication mistakes happen in the United States each year, resulting in more than 200,000 deaths. Many of those impacted are seniors, who tend to take more prescription drugs than other age groups. Here are a few ways to reduce the chance of medication mishaps: Make a list: Make a list of all current medications, including the name, dosage and frequency. Be sure to include over-the-counter medications and supplements, as these may cause negative reactions when taken with certain prescription drugs. Give a copy to your doctors and let family members or caregivers know where you keep this list, which should be updated periodically to add or remove medications as needed.

6

St. Johns Magazine 904-687-8538

Take advantage of new technologies: A number of free smartphone applications allow users to create a medication list that is stored on your cell phone. Automatic medication dispensers are also available, increasing the likelihood that seniors will take their medications correctly. Stick with one pharmacy: If possible, get all prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy to reduce the chance of medication duplication or adverse drug reactions. Consider other options: Consult your physician to see if a non-medication alternative – such as physical therapy instead of pain medication – might be appropriate. Communicate: Make sure your doctors, family members and caregivers know what medications you are taking. While only medical professionals may administer medications, non-medical home caregivers can remind seniors to take their medications, further reducing the likelihood of medication mistakes. Make It The Best “Back to School” Year Ever! by Elizabeth Loeser Welcome to the new school year — a time when children and parents share one of the most difficult annual traditions (and transitions) in the family routine. With these helpful tips from Tutoring Club, St. Johns, you can be prepared for when summer fun fades and the structure of the fall schedule takes over. Get your child off to a great start by making back to school more fun and less stressful for the entire family.

SET EXPECTATIONS:

Children thrive on predictable outcomes – by establishing a to-do list, you are including them in the preparation and will know what to expect.

ESTABLISH ROUTINES: Children should have a set bed time and bedtime rou-

tine each night both during the school year as well as the summer. Well-rested children are much more successful in school.

CHECK SCHOOL WEB SITES: Many school systems have classroom web pages where teachers may list important information regarding the start of the school year.

CENTRALIZE THE CALENDAR: Create your family calendar right away to

make sure everyone knows the schedule between school, sports, activities, parties and trips.

PLAN MEALTIME: If your family meal habits changed over the summer, begin scheduling mealtimes to mimic the school year. Be sure all members of the family eat a healthy breakfast.

TO DO’S YOU DO TOGETHER: Get ready for back to school with your children, not for them, by including them in the process of getting ready and being prepared.

CHECK PAST PERFORMANCE: Look back at your child’s report card and determine if he or she needs an academic boost going into the new school year. Tutoring Club St. Johns has helped hundreds of students get ahead in a difficult subject, which helps them transition more easily.

COMMUNICATE TO EASE ANXIETY: Whether it’s a first grader or a teen, back to school anxiety is a fairly common problem. Talk with your child to make sure he or she feels prepared emotionally and otherwise.

MAKE IT FUN AND MEMORABLE: Back to school should be a moment in your child’s life that is positive, fun, and memorable. Any new jewelry purchase

Body Fat VS. Weight: Is the scale right? by Geoff Thomas, Head Trainer Orangetheory Fitness

Your fitness goal should never be to lose weight. Let that which includes fat, muscle, bones, organs, skin, etc. and not the

sink in for a moment. Your true goal with any fitness regimen should be to lose fat. You see, if you only focus on the scale and lowering that number, you may be losing valuable muscle instead, which can result in long-term fat gain and ultimately bigger numbers on that scale. Trainers often, myself included, toss around the phrase “muscles weighs more than fat,” but what does that really mean to you as our clients? The truth is that when placed on a scale, one pound of fat is going to weigh the same as one pound of muscle – just like one pound of bricks is going to weigh the same as one pound of feathers. Where the confusion comes in is that muscle and fat differ in density (muscle is about 18% more dense than fat) and one pound of muscle occupies less space (volume) than one pound of fat. When the number on the scale does not budge, it is important to remind yourself that the scale only shows you a portion of what is going on. It is only showing your total body weight –

composition of that weight within your body. Your total body weight represented on the scale may be the same as when you started your weight loss program, BUT if you are building muscle mass and losing fat tissue, your body composition will be much different and you will find those clothes fit better despite the scale saying the same number. Utilizing a different number other than just the one on the scale is a great way to reengage in your fitness journey and give you a more accurate idea of what’s going on inside your body. A body composition scan like the InBody we use at Orangetheory Fitness will give you those numbers and with the help of a trainer you can interpret these numbers to customize the best fitness plan for you. Geoff Thomas is the Head Trainer, ORANGETHEORY FITNESS AFAA Certified Personal Trainer

GO BEARS!!!

Blazing New Trails with a New Principal this Year at Bartram Trail High School by Jennifer Andreu Yarbrough

You may already know that Bartram Trail High School

has a new bear at the helm, as former Assistant Chris Phelps was appointed Principal in April. But did you know that a few days after receiving the news he had knee replacement surgery? And now, a few months later, he is back cycling the 25-miles to work? That could pretty much sum up Mr. Phelps’ personality, work ethic and leadership.

As Assistant Principal at Bartram Trail since it’s opening

in 2000, he has lead in a way that has inspired students and teachers to be their best and strive for excellence, no matter what. His advice for parents of high schooolers is to support their students, but then put them on that bike and let them go…let them pedal as fast or slow as they need to and let them steer themselves in the direction they will go, always staying a safe distance to pull them back on the trail when need be. To students, he quotes former Bartram student, Andrew Dill, who, when addressing Freshmen his Senior year told them that it is exciting being in High School and having more freedoms, but “increased freedom, means increased respon-

have!” Current teacher, Mrs. Jane Jens who has worked with him most of her career states, “I have complete confidence that he's the leader we need at BTHS. His calm competence, kindness, and steel backbone assure me that he'll do the right thing. Great choice for us!"

Having spent fourteen years at Nease High School and

now fifteen years at Bartram Trail High School, Mr. Phelps is a great choice for the school and this area. He talks with pride of working with “the same folks, the same families,” over the years and of building relationships and trust with them, he feel like he wants to give back to the community that “has given him so much.”

Alright Bears, get on your cycles and start pedaling, you’ve

got an amazing Principal leading the way!

sibility.”

And Mr. Phelps says to “grab it,” encouraging students to

meet and know every adult on campus, a skill that will help them throughout life. He also speaks of the importance of learning communication and writing skills in class and outside of class, because these skills will lay the foundation for many aspects of their life after high school. A new, proactive program that Mr. Phelps and teachers are excited about is, “Link Crew,” which matches Freshmen with Upperclassmen in a leadership/mentorship setting. Upperclassmen receive training in leadership skills and Freshmen find mentors that can help them navigate the world of high school.

Many teachers, past and present, parents and students

have expressed their enthusiasm for Mr. Phelps’ appointment, Carole Prior, who worked for five years when Phelps was AP says, “He has the HEART of a LION, the ZEAL of a CHAMPION and the LEADERSHIP SKILLS that the CAPTAIN of the STARSHIP must

Cutlure Shock E m b r a c i n g Yo u r L i f e A b r o a d

Have you ever felt homesick? Local business owner and Belgian, Bjorn Huyssman of Fly-Drive-Rent, a car service serving the First Coast, received a visit from a unique traveler this summer. Her name is Séverine Dehon and she is a Belgian living in the United States who decided to find a solution to her homesickness by writing an intercultural blog about Belgians living in the United States. She wanted to discover how they coped with the challenges of culture shock and homesickness and thought it would be fun to document her journey. Each time she meets a new Belgian friend, she interviews them, takes their portrait (she is a photographer) and also she asks them to sign her car, which is how her project, Sign My Car was born. The stories she has collected have helped her outgrow her difficulties and she hopes it will serve others who may be experiencing the same feelings.

The production of Sign My Car! started in April 2015 and will be completed in 2016. Séverine is going to all 48 states of continental USA. Each time she meets another Belgian, she ask them to Sign Her Car! According to Séverine, “This project explores the struggles and joys of creating a new home in a foreign country through the lives of Belgian immigrants. It talks about finding a new balance between two worlds while remaining oneself. Through my interviews and photo-essays, I hope to build a bridge among cultures to promote multiculturalism, mutual respect and compassion.” She continued, “This journey has led me to the most amazing people. Every story I hear helps me overcome a difficulty and makes me a better person. And they help other people too.” Séverine has completed the Midwest and Southeast leg of her tour of the United States. It is interesting to hear about life in the United States from a Belgian’s perspective; what they love and what they find difficult. Bjorn says although it was challenging to get an entrepreneur’s VISA, it was worth it. “I never regret the move from Belgium to the United States.”. He loves the fact that everyone is freindly and since his business is driving, he appreciates the good road conditions. You can find more about this adventure on www. SignMyCar.org where you can click on the signatures to read their story and listen to their video blog. You can also follow Sign My Car! on Twitter and Facebook.

Mrs.Hampton Spanish Bartram

Mrs. Ofelia Hampton Mrs. Ofelia Hampton teaches Spanish 2 and Honors Spanish 3 at Bartram Trail High School. For the last four years she has been the sponsor of the Spanish Club and this year will be sponsoring the Spanish Honor Society (Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica). Spanish Club members have helped the community by holding a food drive, visiting a local nursing home, collecting items for a shelter, and for the last two years, collecting 4,000 diapers for the Alpha Omega Miracle House. Educational Philosophy “My teaching philosophy is to infuse my love of the English language and culture as much as the Spanish. One cannot learn a second language with a weak foundation of the primary language so classes begin with English grammar. Every day I strive to teach with energy, knowledge and enthusiasm, making class memorable. My teaching style is a blend of knowledge, caring, energy, fun and rigor. I want students feel good about learning and speaking Spanish. Students love the stories I tell of my childhood in the U.S. after arriving from Cuba, the

difficulties I encountered learning a second language and culture. I talk about how my parents have mastered the English language over the years and the way they process the new culture and language– they are quite funny stories. In discussing my childhood, I always explain that once I understood the culture, the language became second nature, I was well on my way and I felt a sense of inclusion. For this reason I feel that without a good understanding of the culture, one cannot fully grasp the language. I have posted in my classroom a quote I firmly believe in, which I often reference in class – “If you speak to a man in a language he understands, he will hear you, but if you speak to the same man in his language, his heart will hear you.” Advice for School Success Enjoy learning beyond the scope of the classroom! Expose children to a variety of experiences, so they may see the world beyond their community, beyond their city limits, beyond this great country. Beyond Patience: Management Techniques to Help Children with Learning Differences by Teri Wesserman, Brain Balance Caring for children with learning differences and behavioral issues due to learning disabilities, ADHD or Asperger’s Syndrome is an important function of the school, the home and the community. It takes more than just patience to help children who are dealing with conditions that can hamper their academic, social and physical capabilities.

Symptoms and Training

The symptoms may vary, but most students with learning differences have issues that adversely affect thought processes and/or physical dexterity. They may exhibit difficulty in processing visual or auditory information. Further, some show disconnects in language function, while others cannot understand nonverbal communication. Adults who oversee their well-being soon realize that patience is not enough to manage LD children responsibly. Besides patience, there are management techniques that promote a better quality of life for students with behavioral and learning disorders.

In-School Strategies

In schools, teachers can develop strategic interventions to deal with students with behavioral and learning issues. Below are some of the best interventions to use in the LD classroom: • Provide teacher-directed instruction. • Administer learning strategy instruction. • Give regular feedback. • Allow student independent study. • Monitor intensive remedial practice.

support system they can rely on for maintaining healthy lifestyle habits as well as literacy activities. Parents can advocate for their children in the school and community, making sure that children are receiving the best support and guidance possible. Following are some useful tips on community support: • Attend recreational programs offered by community organizations, like youth centers. • Practice diet and exercise routines supported by public facilities, such as parks and gyms. • Focus on literacy activities, such as reading, writing and listening, at public libraries and museums. • Consider utilizing private intervention professionals, such as physicians and specialists, in the community. The key to helping children with learning disorders is to establish a clear-cut plan of action for training and supporting them in the school, home and community. If teachers, parents and community leaders work together, they can establish regular routines that provide strategic interventions for LD children. In doing so, children will learn and grow, not only via patience, but also from due diligence and commitment. If your child struggles with learning or has been diagnosed with a Learning Disorder, contact us online or find a center near you to learn more about how the Brain Balance Program can help. brainbalanacecenters.com

Guidance for Home

At home, parents and family members must contribute to the child’s developmental awareness. By focusing on helping a child master success attributes, parents can be a positive educational force. Here are some important steps to take for parental guidance: • Identify their strengths and weaknesses. • Help them learn to problem-solve. • Teach them to persevere in the face of adversity. • Show them how to set goals. • Help them with relationship-building.

The Love of Travel: Learn about local Travel Professional Mary Fowler

Imagine the skypool overlooking the turquoise waters of Jamaica, or the pink gin beaches of Grenada. These are some of the amazing dream vacations offered by Mary Fowler at Riverside Tours and Travel, an exclusive Sandals Resort Travel Agent. Mary has been in the travel business for many years and has visited most of the Sandals resorts herself. “Many times after finding the perfect destination for a client, I find myself calling my husband to see when he is free to travel as I am so inspired by the destination or resort. I met and married my best friend and will celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary next year. For this momentous event we plan to renew our vows at Sandals Barbados. We have two boys, one grandson and two very special Chihuahuas Harley & Spot,” Mary said. “My dream is to share with clients my love of travel and to see every part of the world until I can no longer travel myself. My Grandmother was my inspiration and would always say “travel as much as you can”. Every time I travel I carry her in my heart.” Mary says she would love to visit Italy. “I always wanted to take my grandmother to Italy. Instead of looking at places as a tourist and reading about the past, I will hear her say “that was where I met your grandfather”.

TRIP TIPS Here are the Top 5 Travel Tips from Our Expert to make your next trip great! 1.

Write down you must haves. You want to be sure that where you are going and what you are doing is exactly what you want on your vacation. 2. Make sure the place you choose is a place that fits your style and needs. You do not want to find yourself at a resort that parties when you wanted a quiet beach to read a book. 3. Do not book online. You have a 62% chance of arriving to find out your hotel room is not what you thought or worse you are being sent to another property instead. When you book online you are now calling another country and if issues arise they are not your advocate. 4. Use a travel agent, their services are free and they find the same if not better rates for your vacation. Our knowledge is extensive and we know which rooms will give you that incredible view and which destinations will fill all of your needs. 5. Book early, the last minute deals are now becoming fewer and far between this is especially true for holiday travel, summer vacation and spring break with your family. *Sandals Resorts offers the Caribbean’s most innovative luxurious vacations.. A Message from The Vet Dr. Veling, DVM Palencia Pet Clinic

Another Feline Induced Tumor

In June I saw a 10 year old male tuxedo cat, Mouse, with a tumor on the skin of his tail 4 inches from the base on the top. It was 1 centimeter in size. I did a test to see what it was. There were cells present that were “spindle shaped.” These cells are suggestive of our enemy, fibrosarcoma. I recommended that Mouse’s tail be amputated. When we took it off six days later it had doubled in size. The report came back 7 days later saying that it was a fibrosarcoma. This is a malignant tumor. The report also showed that the tumor was removed with a wide margin beyond the malignant cells. It is very likely that Mouse will not have the tumor come back. This tumor and I have a history. There were no fibrosarcomas before 1985. I know because I was a veterinarian then. They come from the use of “killed” vaccines. Killed vaccines were first used in the early 1980s when there was a Rabies epidemic along the east coast. Pennsylvania was the first state to make cat Rabies protection a mandate. Therefore, University of Pennsylvania was the first to report tumors coming up at the site of vaccination. Other veterinary laboratories soon picked up the trend. By 1995 the American Association of Feline Practitioners recommended Feline Distemper Vaccine be given in the right front leg; Rabies be given in the right hind leg; and Leukemia Virus, used only for cats who go outdoors and all kittens, be given in the left hind leg. In 2000, new vaccines were brought to market by Merial that are not killed. Therefore, they

contain no adjuvant. The World Health Organization has classified adjuvant as a Class 3 carcinogen. In my former practice in Indiana, a three doctor practice, we saw 10 cats get these tumors in the 1990s. One was from another practice but 9 were from our practice before the new vaccines came out. I was honest and told the owners what caused the tumors. Four cats died. It is very likely that Mouse’s previous veterinarian gave the vaccination in the tail. The idea of vaccinating a cat in the tail was presented by one of University of Florida’s small animal veterinarians two years ago. The idea is that, if one of these tumors shows up the tail can be amputated. My answer is different. Use a vaccine that doesn’t cause tumors. It is really simple. If a veterinarian uses a killed vaccine he or she is using a product that is cheap. He or she cares more about making money than the safety of your cat. He or she does not deserve your trust. Ask to see the label of the vaccine being used before it is used. If he or she won’t show you the label or it says “Killed” on the label, RUN AWAY FAST! ALL VACCINE CLINICS AT DRUG STORES USE KILLED VACCINES! Please pass this along.
